The school where she taught wasn’t the most prestigious in the state, but at least it had a principal who was dedicated to giving his students as many opportunities to learn as possible. For some dim-witted reason, he believed that taking a field trip to the museum would actually benefit the kids in some way. After enduring a painful bus ride full of bratty kids, Cel and the rest of the chaperones arrived at the museum. “Field trips should’ve been left behind in middle school,” she sighed once she stepped out of the bus and onto the pavement. The students were antsy. Roll had just been called, and in a split second, the brats were let loose into the facility. The classes were given worksheets to complete during the day, but Celsius had a feeling that they’d be forgotten. At least she’d have less to grade. The next few hours were spent chatting with chaperoning parents. They were all superficial and dull, but they weren’t afraid to reveal embarrassing stories about their kids. It wasn’t information worthy of blackmail, but she was certainly entertained. If anything, it was leverage to get her students to study and pass her class. The scheduled IMAX show had arrived, and the students filed inside the dark theater. They were supposed to be watching a film about the history and development of airplanes and other aircrafts, but there was no way in hell Celsius was going to sit and stare at a screen for two hours straight. She managed to sneak out at the last minute, using the restroom as an excuse. The young teacher sighed as she walked down the hall toward the railing. The hall overlooked the first story, and she could see parts of the floors above. She pulled out her cell phone to check the time, leaning forward against the rails. Just as she flipped open her phone, the device vibrated, indicating that she was receiving a call. Very rarely did anyone contact her like this. The phone slipped through her startled hands and began to tumble downward toward the first floor. |
