OS X Lion security patch.
In each case, there would be roughly the same amount of "wired" RAM afterwards and a significant pickup in "active" RAM, which on average climbed 400Mb. Put it all together, and each run of iFreeMem gave me a huge boost in RAM "overhead," so I could continue working without needing to restart, which in the past was the only way to really bring these figures down dramatically. (I've found that logging out and back in isn't nearly as effective, unfortunately.) Note that the screenshots from which the test data is taken were made immediately before running iFreeMem and immediately afterwards. While iFreeMem was running, I didn't open or close any application or document on my Mac.

Well, it seems Apple, Inc. has managed to find a few improvements and has announced some of them on Tuesday 11 June 2013.
Memory Clean 5.0 is one of the better apps and is totally free (but only from the App Store).

OS X Yosemite should receive the abovementioned full manual fix of the latest bash version. But if not, Apple has mentioned providing some kind of a fix to this issue in the Yosemite Gold Master 2 edition. Therefore, the final official 1.0 release to the public when it comes out before the end of 2014 will have the same fix applied.
Is Apple losing the plot?
Open Activity Monitor to see the before and after results yourself, you’ll find dramatic changes at the “Free”, “Used”, and “Inactive” meters under System Memory.
Apple plans to release OS X "Mavericks" towards the end of 2013, with most of the usual bugs to be cleaned up as users get the hang of the latest changes. Well, that's all part of following the principles of the Agile Manifesto for software development. It is mainly about delivering working software frequently and quickly to the customers, often on shorter and shorter time scales, and so long as the software basically works, then that's usually the measure of progress and success in the IT world. However, from the perspective of a growing number of end users, this can be a pain in the arse with regular updates and later regular upgrades to pay just to make the software seem workable again (i.e., most of the bugs ironed out, and hopefully no new ones introduced to bring us back to the beginning once again), forget whether the user really wants to have more features in a new upgrade.
In fact, Apple even states as much on its page about creating a bootable installer, here. It says: "To download macOS Mojave or High Sierra for this purpose, download from a Mac that is using macOS Sierra 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6."
