tagged: Lucien Margaux time: May 11th. 12PM. speech: kun shui. notes: - - - Kun Shui had always been an early riser, though sleeping in hadn’t been a choice that day when he found that he woke up at 9am instead of the usual 6. It wasn’t too much of an issue, realistically speaking, because he had little planned that day and part of him felt like he should just go back to sleep until a file was due, or something. However, he found just lying there to not be very soothing, so eventually he did get up and got dressed, wandering out into the house to see if there was anything that needed to be taken care of. It was quiet, and he quickly peeked in on Lucien to make sure he was still alive and that Jun Shi hadn’t snuck in and murdered him while they were all asleep.
He wouldn’t put it past him, but he was thankful when he saw that Lucien was wholly alive and breathing. Kun Shui sighed, wondering if he should go check up on the mentioned twin, only to dismiss it and go for some food instead. He was hungry from last night, and a large breakfast was in order. It would’ve been about time when Lucien dragged himself out of bed anyways.
So Kun Shui ended up sitting on the couch, a newspaper in his lap from Hong Kong and reading up on the finances section because apparently he was already a fifty year old in his mid twenties. It wasn’t so bad, all things considered, but he wasn’t exactly enjoying a few of his stocks going down either. It gave him some room for pause, though, to think about things.
Mostly, his thoughts went to the fan. Lucien still had it in his room, but he considered taking it back for a few moments. Jun Shi wouldn’t be any less angry, though; it had been done, and he was well aware that Lucien was of some importance now. He’d most likely target him for as long as they were in LA, which would be a while, considering the ‘job’ his twin had in front of him.
Kun Shui sighed, flipping the page. Nothing much he could do at that point but hopefully weather the storm. |

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. Lucien slept like the dead, which was an apt description considering he'd nearly died. At the very least he was convinced it was a near brush with death--that if he'd been left alone with Jun Shi, he'd have killed him given the time. He'd escaped that narrowly, and he had plenty of damage to show for it.
The pinky finger on his left hand would likely never work properly again. It would work to some extent--would at least move--but it would always be stiff, would always pain him. His ring finger would work just fine, but it would be a few days before it stopped aching him. Really, nothing in that had been legitimately damaged, but it had certainly been bruised. It ached something fierce when he woke, but his pinky hurt so much he barely noticed by comparison.
Because it did hurt. The morphine had almost completely worn off, and having slept in several hours later then usual, he'd yet to have any sort of painkiller. It hurt, and there weren't even any painkillers for him to take. No, he'd need to find Kun Shui for those.
That was his first priority as he dragged his way out of bed. He was slow and clumsy, kept aware because of the pain. He felt fully awake just the same, and he didn't even bother to change before trudging out of his room. He was already in a robe--the same one from the night before, which was almost certainly going to be thrown out entirely once he was lucid enough to take a shower and change. It was downright dirty, and there wasn't a whole hell of a lot he could do at the moment.
He had no idea what time it was, and he was a bit worried that Kun Shui would be tucked away in his office. He'd never been in there before, but he needed painkillers more then he cared about leaving that a safe space for Kun Shui. Thankfully he needn't have worried, because Kun Shui was in the living area, reading the newspaper, and Lucien made a strangled little noise at the sight of him, arm hanging limply as he paused.
"Kun Shui." Which directly translated to 'I would really like some painkillers now, thank you'.

He didn’t really hear him coming downstairs, lost in his thoughts for the time being and wondering if it would’ve been better if he headed outside to read. It wasn’t like it was freakishly hot at the moment, was it? Early mornings were preferred because he didn’t feel like he’d scorch himself just by sitting down in shorts… not that Kun Shui would ever really wear shorts.
But when Lucien came downstairs, it didn’t come as much of a surprise. He glanced up at him, looking tiny and still a little pale, his robe an utter mess and in a huge need of a shower. Perhaps he’d coax him into taking one a little later, when he gave him more painkillers. He could only imagine how much his fingers were hurting, though by how he was holding them off to his side, it wasn’t much of a stretch to assume a lot.
”Good morning, Lucien.” Not too good of a morning, all things considered, but it was noon and Lucien was likely starving and tired and in a lot of pain. He didn’t waste any time putting his paper aside and standing up. ”I’m assuming you’d like your pills now.”

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. It certainly didn't feel like a good morning. On a good morning, you didn't feel like you desperately needed a shower, and on a good morning you hadn't had surgery not twelve hours before to repair your shattered finger. Good mornings started with timely wake ups and several hours of reading before a hearty breakfast. They did not involve sleeping in as the morphine wore off.
He'd have rather have been up earlier to get his pills earlier, because even if the pills were fast acting as the doctor claimed, they weren't going to be nearly fast acting enough.
"Yes." He blurted out, more eager then anything, and then hurriedly added to it. "Please." Because by god, he was desperate for it, and he tried to make conversation just to give his brain something to think on that wasn't 'my finger really really hurts'.
"Did you sleep at all?" He must have, because he didn't look nearly as exhausted as he had before. If Kun Shui hadn't slept, Lucien was fairly sure he would have been able to spot it just from the change in body language, the way he'd been so sure he was exhausted the night before.

He was scrawny looking and rather shaken, which wasn’t at all a surprise considering what happened the night before. Still, he couldn’t blame him; the fan had technically been his fault and if Jun Shi was going to take his anger out on anybody over it, then it would’ve been fair if it was directed at the older twin.
He tried to be nice, though. He was still tired, but he wasn’t dead exhausted and ready to fall over at any second like the night before, so he smiled a little when Lucien blurted out his answer, only adding a shy ‘please’ at the end. The medication was upstairs in his room, so he motioned to Lucien to follow him up the stairs where he’d just come from, and down the hall.
”I guess I was too tired to not sleep well.” He practically passed out as soon as his head hit the pillow. ”I also assume you barely remember anything from the night before.” Aside from the surgery, because he was fully expecting Lucien to be too doped up to remember his apology.
And, to be utterly honest, it had been a nice apology. It humbled him, and perhaps it made him think that Lucien wasn’t all bad after all. He was still wary of him, sure, but not as much as before. Mellowing down had helped. |

It was a sad statement of fact that Lucien was so unused to people smiling at him without malicious intent that he actually noted the fact that Kun Shui was smiling. Was it the first time? It seemed like it. He couldn't remember having seen Kun Shui smile before. Generally he just stared, or frowned, or 'hmm'ed. He never exactly went on the happy side of things, and the fact that he was seemed particularly notable for Lucien.
He followed him up the stairs quietly enough, but his question--statement, really--caught him off guard. Even if he was in pain at the moment, he was a tad confused by the question. Thinking back, everything seemed a bit fuzzy around the edges, but he still remembered it more or less.
"No. I think I remember most. A whole lot of pain. The morphine. All that... other stuff." Which meant the apology. Only he didn't' want to call it that, because it was super, super awkward. He had no idea what Kun Shui thought of it. Had he accepted it? That part was a bit on the blurry side. He knew he'd practically rambled out his life story, and all things considered, Kun Shui probably thought he was a windbag and little else. |

tagged: Lucien Margaux. time: May 10th, 4PM. speech: jun shi. notes: - - -. Other stuff. The first thing that came to mind was the apology, but he wasn’t entirely sure on that. He nodded anyways, stepping into his room and motioning for Lucien to come in. He doubted he’d ever been in his room before, but it was nicely decorated and looked rather similar to home. One whole wall was made of thick glass; better for it not to shatter if a bird decided to fly into it, after all. The bed itself was huge, with red sheets and made of black lacquered wood. The bedside tables were similar, and the curtains were a deep maroon with gold accents. Various objects decorated the space; book cases and small plants and a picture frame or two, all hailing to where he’d come from and his family. It was quite personal, to say the least.
”I still have a few days’ worth of medication for you. Hopefully your pain will be eased by then.” He went to the washroom attached to the room itself, digging through the medicine cabinet full of strange bottles and mystery pills that had questionable effects. There were various tar-like granules in one of them, crushed powder in another, and what almost looked like a small glass jar full of twigs that had one use or another. Chinese medicine was a strange creature.
”Here.” He finally got a bottle out with some little white pills in it, spilling out onto one hand and holding it out to Lucien. A cup of water from the sink was next, holding that out to him as well. He’d hopefully be more at ease afterwards, and Kun Shui wouldn’t have to worry so much. All he needed to confront now was Jun Shi. |

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. Kun Shui's bedroom. He had never been there before--had never so much as looked at the door for more then a moment. He'd never even considered that he might one day be inside, even if it was for the sole purpose of getting his pills. It was strange to be in there, having never considered what was inside, but he still found himself vaguely surprised. Kun Shui came off cold and detached, with no need for anything. He'd have expected the room to be sparse and barren, much in the way that Lucien's own room had been in Hong Kong. Instead it was tastefully decorated in red, gold, and black. Of all of it, picture frames were the most surprising. Was he that nostalgic, that attached to his home?
That was strange, all in all, and he couldn't help but note his one observation. Red and gold seemed everywhere. That the color scheme had followed him across the ocean meant it was important somehow, and he really couldn't figure out why.
"What's the significance of red and gold?" It was everywhere, and considering his red hair, he was vaguely interested. He probably shouldn't have been looking at all, but he found himself doing so anyway. It seemed so homely and exciting, and he felt the desire to just crawl into the bed. It looked so warm and inviting compared to the sparseness of his own room.
He trailed him to the bathroom, eyeing the medicine and trying not to judge. If Kun Shui thought it worked, perhaps it did. Even so, in a choice between a white pill and a stick, he was going to pick the pill any day of the week. He reached out, taking the pill when offered, and he'd gulped it down before the glass was even offered. He took it anyway, swallowing a mouthful of water to help wash the pill down, and then let out a quiet sigh. It wasn't kicking in yet, but there was a certain amount of psychological effect in knowing that the throbbing pain was going to go away. |

He wasn’t entirely sure how to explain all the history to him, but he supposed he could try and be brief about it. Still, he waited to get the medication before he’d reply, handing the pill and water to Lucien who gladly took it. At least he could be soothed a little now, and even if it had been a placebo, he was aware that it would work wonders just knowing that he’d popped a damn pill.
”Red and gold are really important colours in Chinese culture.” He started, stepping out of the washroom and glancing around his own room. It definitely reminded him of home, and he sought and found some comfort in that fact. He missed home, and he wanted to go back, but it wasn’t at all an option when it came to business matters. Until he officially took over as heir, his father demanded that he stay in Los Angeles and even after, it might’ve been safer to stay in the States until turmoil died down.
”Red means good fortune and happiness. The red envelopes they give out during special occasions definitely mean that you’re wishing somebody prosperity. Gold or yellow is also considered a very beautiful colour, and it is usually only used for royalty.” Which, as heir to the triad, he was definitely considered modern day ‘royalty’.
”You’re quite a symbol of good luck, having red hair.” And red eyes. All he needed to do was put on red clothes and he could be a deity in himself. His father certainly considered acquiring Lucien of some luck, and he was meant to serve as a companion for Kun Shui, which was supposed to mean happiness. Too bad he let that go to waste for two years. |

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. Red meant good fortune and happiness? It was a strange and melancholy thought to realize what he meant. Red hair, red eyes. Not good luck for him certainly, but to others. To those around him, who possessed him like a good luck charm. He wondered faintly if Kun Shui had experienced good luck. Was the Wei triad doing well since they'd collected him? They'd certainly won their fight with the Margaux while holding onto him, and he supposed that was enough to convince the superstitious. They wouldn't need anything more then that to cement their beliefs.
He supposed it made sense that Kun Shui's rooms were decked in those colors. Royalty and good fortune. One thing that he was, and one thing that he needed. Some said that luck was needed only by the unprepared, but those people were simply stupid. Anyone would need luck. There was only so much that a person could prepare for without going completely insane.
He could feel the pain ebb slightly, even if it was only in his mind, and he let out a short sigh of relief. In reality, the medicine wouldn't even start to kick in for another few minutes--but his brain told him it would be okay, and it started to work its magic anyway.
"I suppose I should be thankful for my hair then. I imagine it played a part in saving my life." He felt oddly awkward in Kun Shui's bedroom--like he didn't belong there at all. |

He was fully aware of how childish it made him sound, but sometimes when he was curled up in bed, he could try and imagine that he was home. Back in Hong Kong, there was always noise; the shouts of people and the horns of various cars on the street, and a lot of kicked up dust that he thought he’d hate it but now sort of missed it. He definitely didn’t like LA’s skyline as much as Hong Kong’s, and he did miss those bustling markets that he’d sometimes make his way into when he wasn’t too busy. There were no shouting vendors in Los Angeles, that was for sure. A pity; he loved the life that was instilled in the people back at home.
”Maybe it did.” Perhaps his father had decided to keep him solely for that reason, but he wasn’t entirely sure and to be quite honest, he wasn’t in much of a mood to care. Lucien seemed to have mellowed out after just a minute or two, though he was sure that it wouldn’t kick in for a little while more. The placebo effect at its finest, and he tilted his head curiously at him.
”Would you like to go back to bed? You still seem rather tired.” Or perhaps he wanted to go get some food, or something. Wait, why did he care so much? Was he really that desperate for something to hold on to? Jun Shi was now completely out of the question, having become so estranged so quickly that he wasn’t sure if he could herd him back quickly enough. |

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. Bed. It seemed like a valid option, but at the same time he'd just slept in quite a bit. He wasn't truly tired--perhaps a bit emotionally exhausted still, but sleep wouldn't fix that, only peace. He needed quiet and relaxation and not having thoughts of Jun Shi looming over him. He knew that Kun Shui wouldn't let him anywhere near him, but he'd also said that before, and it hadn't turned out well. Even so, he told himself that this time was different. Kun Shui knew the risks, and he wasn't going to let Jun Shi through this time.
"No." He paused for a moment, then shook his head to confirm. "I'm not tired so much as exhausted. Rest, but not sleep I think." He paused, his good hand raising up to rest on his thin stomach. "And I think food, and a shower if I can manage." He felt disgusting, and while he probably didn't look as bad as he felt, he certainly didn't look his best. He wanted to just shower and curl up and eat all at the same time, but unfortunately he was going to have to prioritize first.
"Did you eat yet?" It had become habit to eat together. If he had eaten, then a shower was in order. If he hadn't, then food would come first. He had no prior obligations, so it was easy to adjust to fit Kun Shui's schedule. |

Perhaps going back to the old routine would help; just read and eat and little else, and maybe wander out into the streets for a bit to see what was going on. Lucien was adapting to that at the very least; he was going out more often and spending less time cooped up. Though he doubted Lucien would risk going outside when his finger was so badly injured, he wasn’t going to put it past him.
”There’s still plenty of food in the kitchen.” Leftovers from breakfast, and lunch that the cook was likely preparing at that very moment. As for a shower, he had one in his own room, and he’d need to get rid of those stained sheets and bloodied clothes. Soap would make the cut sting though, especially looking at it now. The stitches, though secure, still looked ugly on his fair skin and everything was still rather bruised up.
Speaking of bruises, he clenched his fist at his side and felt a dull throb there. Yep, definitely some nice bruises along the side of his hand where Lucien had anchored death grip. It hurt, but he could only imagine how much pain Lucien was in, so he excused that.
”No, I hadn’t. Not lunch, at least.” And it was noon now, so that was in order. Lucien did look more hungry, though his dirtied robe wasn’t exactly something he wanted to stare at while eating. ”You should take a shower first, though, and get new clothes.” |

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. Lucien needed a lot of things, and rest was just one of them. Most of them were mutually exclusive though, and he was just going to have to wait on others. There would be no going outside that day. Maybe the day after, but not the first day, with his hand still throbbing. He was eager to go out, to smell the fresh air again, and he considered reading on the balcony for most of the day--if he was allowed. The balcony still seemed to be a strange offering, and even with Kun Shui having said he was fine to go out on it, he was a bit iffy on the prospect. It felt like a trap--like he'd been offered a delicious meal laced with poison.
Perhaps he'd spent too much time with Jun Shi.
The mention of plenty of food make him think he'd be eating--but no, Kun Shui wanted him to shower. Well, that was fine--he could shower on his own, and he eyed the splint on his finger before giving a little nod. "I think I can manage on my own." But that was a big 'I think', because he still wasn't feeling the best.
"I'll go and -- and try and do that, and then we can have lunch." He tried to sound reassuring, and assuming Kun Shui agreed, that would be what he'd go off to do. |

He nodded at him, sitting down on his bed and waving his hand dismissively. Lucien could go and do as he pleased, and then they could eat because the poor man looked half starved. He’d need to talk to the cook next; prepare them something lighter, so he wouldn’t make himself sick when he ate.
Ah, perhaps he was growing soft, like Jun Shi had said before. That wasn’t favourable, but he couldn’t help it at the moment. Lucien was acting like a kicked puppy and Kun Shui, though not the fatherly type by any stretched, would prefer to take care of him rather than figuring out how to dispose of the body when infection set in. Jun Shi certainly had those sorts of resources, but when it came to triad activity, Kun Shui would’ve much preferred to deal in the drug trade. It was ‘cleaner’, so to speak, and China’s opium trade was booming.
Kun Shui left after Lucien did, heading downstairs to the kitchen and peeking in, before telling the cook what he wanted made. It wouldn’t take too long, but it’d do to fill a hungry stomach for now. In turn, he moved to set the table, putting down some napkins, forks, knives and spoons. He was well aware that Lucien might make a mess, though he wasn’t entirely sure which of his hands was the dominant one.
And so he waited, sitting down with his mug of coffee that he’d forgotten earlier. Cold by now, so perhaps he’d go tell the cook to get him another mug as well. |

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. Lucien had never been one for long showers, but this time was different. When he returned to his room he stripped off his robe with a wince, shoving it in a corner. It'd be thrown out--even if it was washed, it had bloodstains on one arm, and those were unlikely to come out. Better to discard it entirely.
Of all things, he wrapped his arm loosely in a towel. It wouldn't keep direct water off it, but it'd keep it from getting wet off the spray. Turning on the shower made him wince, but when he finally stepped in it was like a breath of fresh air.
He scrubbed for more then a half hour before he even started on his hair--a shaggy mess at the moment, although when he finally emerged from the bathroom more then an hour later, it looked just fine. Straight and hanging to his mid back, and brushed until it was perfect. His vanity was long gone, but the old habits still held out. His hair was still a bit damp, and he'd been unwilling to blow dry it all. The heat was a bit too much for him, and he'd been feeling faint by the time he'd finally emerged.
A new robe was selected, and he managed to dress himself with only a few winces. Mostly he was just being very careful with it, trying not to jostle it.
He looked like a different person by the time he arrived in the kitchen. Healthier. Still pale, but no longer looking like he was about to pass out at any moment. He gave a short nod to Kun Shui, a little smile.
"I hope I didn't keep you waiting." He felt a thousand times better for the shower though. |

He went for a second cup of coffee, pouring his out in the sink and refilling it from the fresh pot sitting on the kitchen counter. A little bit of milk and sugar, though he liked his tea plain and only drank coffee in the early mornings. He’d make it an exception this once, however. No coffee for Lucien though; he’d heard that those things interfered with medication at times, so he got out another mug and began brewing some green tea.
He let his mind wander just a little as he did so. Nonetheless, his mind always went back to Jun Shi. He wondered where he was now, but the answer was either holed up in his own apartment or gone out to take it out on some other poor, unfortunate soul that he happened to take a fancy to. Now, who was that person he’d redirected to his brother? Someone named Gabriel… Kingston? Was it Kingston? What the hell had happened to his memory?
His attention was snapped right back when he heard Lucien’s voice, turning to see him standing in the doorframe to the kitchen. He looked a lot better, his clothes were no longer bloodied and dirty, and his hair was once again brushed out smooth. He quite liked his hair, and he found himself thinking that if Lucien cleaned himself up, he’d be quite pretty.
”Ah… no.” He turned, mug in hand and holding one out to Lucien. Green tea; very usual, and nothing at all out of the ordinary in the household. |

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. He had a feeling that Kun Shui had been waiting if he was still in the kitchen. If he'd gone into the office, that wouldn't have been waiting, but the fact that he was still lingering around meant he'd probably spent the last hour doing very little while he waited for Lucien to appear.
He reached out with both hands, using his bad hand to support the underside while the good hand held the handle. He was careful around his finger, but he still wasn't feeling his best and preferred to use both hands with the cup. Things were simply easier that way.
It was only then, with cup in hand, that he noticed it. He'd simply glanced at Kun Shui's cup, wondering if they were both drinking green tea, when he noticed for the first time. Bruises. His face paled, and for a moment he had no idea what had happened. Then it clicked, and while he didn't relax much at all, he at least wasn't panicking.
He glanced up at Kun Shui, face drawn and pale. "Did I do that?" He didn't remember doing that, but then he remembered little of the surgery itself beyond that it had hurt a great deal. |

He let go when Lucien took his mug, careful not to let it drop when Lucien tried to support the bottom with his injured hand. Thankfully, the mugs were thick and he knew it wouldn’t feel much too hot too soon. He withdrew and was just about to wander right back over to the kitchen table to wait for their meal when Lucien seemed to pale, staring down at his hand.
The bruises stretched around the sides and across his knuckles, where Lucien had gripped him so hard that he swore the bones had grinded inside. He remembered how pale Lucien’s knuckles went, but he’d needed something to hang on to and his shirt wasn’t much of a better option. Lucien looked like he’d seen a ghost, however. It had probably just hit him that he was the one to cause the bruising, and to be honest, it hurt whenever he tried to put a grip on it. It wasn’t like the bruise was in one area; it was all across his hand.
A slow nod was the answer. ”During your surgery.” He never realized that such a thin person could grip so hard, and it had been close to impossible to get out of once Lucien clamped down on his hand like that. He’d probably have to wear gloves for the next little while, lest people give him odd looks at his business meetings.
Or if Jun Shi saw. If his twin brother saw, he wouldn’t be able to stop him from stabbing Lucien multiple times, or just tossing him off the balcony. He’d also receive quite an earful about letting people into his life like that. |

tagged: kun shui. time: may 11th, 12pm. notes: aftermath. He had a vague recollection of holding onto something, but he had never stopped to remember what it was he'd been holding onto. The surgery was a blur of pain and discomfort, and his mind had largely shoved it away, locking it deep down so that Lucien did not need to remember the pain. It wasn't necessary to remember, and so it had helped him forget--the human mind was always good at that.
"I'm sorry." The second real apology in his life, and to the same person--it was getting to be a habit, but one he wasn't eager to break. "I didn't realize I'd hurt you." He paused, then turned, carefully setting down his tea and stepping forward, looking at the injured hand.
The bruising was not unlike his own, only his own bruises were caused by malice, while Kun Shui's bruises had been caused by desperation and pain. He'd needed something to hold onto, and Kun Shui had given him his hand, even when he'd squeezed so hard that bruises formed. "It's not - it's not broken, is it?" He honestly couldn't tell, which said something about the level of bruising.
