[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width:400px;,bTable] Saturday, May 5, 2012 @ 9:00AM Carmina loved piloting planes. She knew all the procedures, she understood the mechanics, and she absolutely loved being able to soar above the clouds in a giant, metal tube. So how was it that despite her love and skill of piloting planes, driving cars on the roads was something so drastically different? Carmina absolutely detested driving. Perhaps it was the traffic, or the road rage. Maybe it was the fact that she was not flying but instead stuck to the ground. No matter what the reason, Carmina hated it and wished more than anything that she was not currently stuck in traffic as she drove into town to do her chores. Her car was a Dodge Dart. A sleek, black vehicle that Carmina knew she should have been proud of but inevitably fell short (in her opinion) in comparison to the beautiful jet sitting in Los Angeles Airport hangar. The Boeing private jet was owned by her employer and not Carmina herself, not that it bothered her much. It just made her happy to be able to sit in the (co)pilot’s seat and watch the world rotate below her. She did not need the jet – although perhaps one day she might want her own small plane. No, all she needed was to fly and in order to accomplish that, anyone’s plane would do. It took at least another half hour but eventually the brunette was able to get out of the traffic jam. Unfortunately, as she pulled down another street her car began to sputter and slow down. Carmina pulled over to the side and parked her car as best she could before getting out in order to inspect the damage. Carmina opened the hood of her car but immediately became confused and intimidated by the amount of wiring and mechanics in the car. ”Oh no.” Carmina was lamenting. She did not have much to do today but being stranded miles away from home did not seem to be a very good option either. She could call a mechanic but she didn’t have a number for one nor did she have a smart phone that allowed her to look up the number for a mechanic. Carmina looked around her but she other than the park, there did not seem to be anything or anyone that could help. ”Great, what am I going to do now?”400 EDITH NOTES |

words | 407 | When she awoke that morning, Edith had decided that she was going to take a day off for herself. She would go get her hair done and then take a spin around the town. Even with the light showers that were happening throughout the week, the southern Californian weather was enjoyable and she wasn't about to let the possibility of a little rain stop her. For the most part, the day had began successfully. She made her appointments, put on one of her best outfits, and came up with an idea of where to go in the rest of her free time. It was hard not to be positive about what the day would bring.
However, the short streak of good luck was just that. Short. The moment she got into her car and tried to venture out for a morning drive, she found herself accidentally stuck in a traffic jam. She wasn't quite sure what made her continuously think that she would eventually find a nice place to go cruising around Los Angeles, but it was a difficult task and more often than not the woman found herself stuck in some sort of horrendous traffic. It was either that or she was stuck just going up and down poorly laid out one-way streets. She was fairly certain whoever engineered the streets of the city had a few visions from the devil before the project.
Grumbling to herself, the woman was amongst those who gave up and pulled into other streets as soon as they were able to. Which, coincidentally, was exactly what put her into an interesting situation. She was happy to get out of the traffic jam, but something caught her eye that made her a bit worried. There was a girl stuck on the side of the road, seemingly with engine troubles. Edith had passed by plenty of drivers with difficulty in the past. With the invention of cellphones, people didn't seem to care for any help an older woman had to offer them. Still, it was hard to ignore someone completely on their own. After all, this sort of situation was right up her alley, even if she had been retired for a few years.
Edith parked her own car not too far away and threw her purse over her shoulder before stepping out. She walked over to the girl who was standing there with the less fortunate vehicle. "Need some help, sweetheart?" |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width:400px;,bTable] The voice startled Carmina and directed her attention away from her car and towards the old woman walking toward her. The exchange surprised the younger woman for a number of reasons; the main one being that she had not expected someone to actually stop to help her. You rarely met people like that nowadays and Carmina felt very thankful towards the older woman for stopping to help. ”Yes, please,” Carmina smiled bashfully at the stranger. Carmina was suddenly embarrassed by the whole situation. The older woman appeared to be very kind and Carmina had the sudden sense that she did not want to disappoint her. It was a strange feeling but it seemed that she liked her and wanted to impress her. Carmina decided that having to ask for help because of her broken down car was not the best first impression. ”Thank you for stopping to help. Um, I don’t know what happened. My car just started slowing down.” Carmina sighed in resignation. ”At least it’s not smoking.” Carmina took another look at her car. ”Stupid machine,” Carmina muttered. ”Planes are so much easier.”She looked back at the older woman. She was very thankful for her help but it had just occurred to her that she was unsure of how the woman would help. ”Ummm. So do you know a mechanic? Or do you perhaps have the number of a mechanic?” 000 EDITH NOTES |

words | 250 | Edith returned Carmina's bashfulness with a warm smile. While she could understand having a bit of embarrassment in a car broken down on the side of the road, these things happened and it was nothing to fret over too much. For the older woman, had it happened to her own car, she probably would have been shouting with rage more than anything. So, the reaction was cute more than anything.
She nodded along as the girl told her what the problems were. It all seemed pretty common and it was indeed a good thing that there was no smoke. That was a good sign. "Planes are easier, hm?" She asked with a soft laugh. "I don't think I've heard that one before."
Where such an idea came from she would have to ask in a moment. But first, curious, she stepped closer to take a peek at the engine herself. "I know a few mechanics, but let me take a look at it first. Maybe we can fix this without having to take it anywhere. I think Harold has the cellphone…" Edith trailed off and rolled up her sleeves before she put her hands on anything. It was warm, but didn't seem overheated. Worse came to worse she would have to find a pay phone, but hopefully it wouldn't be an issue.
Maybe she'd see what the girl knew about the engine first. "I'm assuming you know more about planes, then. Have you worked with those kinds of engines before?" |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width:400px;,bTable] Carmina turned flushed again when she heard the older woman and comment and chuckle at her muttering. So she had heard her comment about the planes. Well that was to be somewhat expected. She did say it out loud and anything said out loud could possibly be heard by another person. Carmina was generalizing but she did not expect the older woman to have such sharp hearing. The brunette was surprised when the older woman moved over to inspect the engine. ”You have experience with car mechanics?” Carmina asked her in surprise. Well this was certainly a first. Carmina had met female mechanics before but she had never met a female mechanic of her age. Carmina didn’t think that women in past were allowed to be mechanics. She knew for a fact that women weren’t allowed to be pilots until the 1970s. ”Oh, yes I know about planes.” Carmina smiled brilliantly at the woman’s question. ”I don’t know about the engines but I do know about the controls. I’m a pilot.” Carmina looked at the hunk of metal that was her car. ”You know, it’s funny. I can pilot planes but I’m horrible with cars.””Thank you so much for helping me. Ummm Miss…” Carmina suddenly realized that she had not yet asked for the woman’s name. ”This is embarrassing but I realized that we were never formally introduced. My name is Carmina. And you are?” 000 EDITH NOTES |

words | 278 | "I have some experience, yes," she answered in a manner that was oddly modest for her. It was a rare occasion when she didn't just full-on boast about her most treasured skill sets. She had her progressive upbringing to thank for it originally, but it was also something in which she had decades worth of experience. Sure, things were always changing and mostly getting better. While some things seemed to be a bit more shoddy thanks to the industries issues with cheap mass productions, that wasn't a battle for her to fight any more. All she could do was stare at car engines now and be thankful that they weren't something like the Yugo.
Edith was a bit disappointed in what she heard, but she didn't let it show on her face. Such a young girl being a pilot was interesting and she was at least glad to hear Carmina knew her way behind at least one sort of wheel. For a moment, she looked up, though she continued leaning over the engine. "Sweetheart, a good pilot should get to know her engine," she suggested from her clearly biased mechanic's point of view. She could at least acknowledge it was biased, though. "But that's alright, I'm sure it's possible for someone to be a fine pilot anyway. My name's Edith Herschel."
"Now--" Cutting herself off, she stood up, rubbing her own back very briefly as she did. The woman made a motion for the steering wheel. "Have you tried starting this thing since you ended up on the side of the road? I need to know if it revs when you try, or if it just clicks." |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style, width:400px;,bTable] Carmina smiled. ”It’s wonderful that you have experience with cars. I feel very lucky to have met you when I did, what with my car and all.”Carmina was admittedly caught unawares when the woman – Edith, she corrected herself – suggested that a good pilot should know her engine. It was not like Carmina did not know how the plane worked (she didn’t spend four years in engineering school for nothing) it just did not interest her as much. The actual act of piloting the plane was what drew her interests. Carmina silently wondered if perhaps she should defend herself but instead kept quiet and decided to let the moment pass. The brunette never was the combative type after all. And somewhere along the line, she did feel as if she was disappointing Edith in some way for not being a better pilot. Well it’s nice to meet you Miss Herschel,” said Carmina in a polite voice. Being a pilot is fantastic. It is wonderful when you’re thousands of miles above the clouds and you can see the whole world beneath you.””Ummm I haven’t actually,” the brunette admitted. ”I didn’t want to for fear of me destroying it something even further. Why don’t I do that right now?”Carmina got into her car, prayed that this would work, and started the engine. Of course, with her luck nothing happened. Carmina tried again a few more times before the engine roared to life. She got out of her car and turned to the woman. ”So how does it look?” 000 EDITH NOTES |

words | 346 | It was amazing how such a small thing could tell so much about an engine. It took a bit, but the engine was revving and it even managed to start-up after her few tries. Unless it was something more bizarre, which Edith doubted, that narrowed down the engine troubles to the fuel pump. "Your electrical system seems to be fine, so it's probably a fuel system issue." She sighed as she stood back up and brushed off her hands. If it was what she thought it was, this was one of those problems she had seemed all too many times before. Most of the time she couldn't say the driver was at fault, nor the age of the car. This was just the result of the fuel market.
"I wouldn't advise you drive this thing too far, because it is possible for you to break down again even if it starts. You'll want to take it to someone who can really check your fuel pump. My guess is that the injectors are starting to get a little clogged, but it's easy and not expensive to fix. With the gas quality going down so much at some places, it's becoming an epidemic." Struggling with the fluctuating gas prices was something she hated dealing with. It was like the 70's all over again some days, aside from the typical inflation. While it was better than it had been in awhile, the prices in California made her sulk and she knew people were lowering their prices by using a lower quality of fuel. But oh well, what could a person do?
She paused for a moment though and thought more on the situation. That didn't really help the girl where she was now. They needed to find a phone and then a mechanic stationed not too far from where they were. "Not quite the same as dealing with a plane in this case," she laughed, assuming that the quality control had to have been better for things in the air. "It sounds like you really enjoy what you do." |

Carmina stared in awe at the woman. Edith was amazing. All she had done was start up the engine and in just a few moments, she had been able to pinpoint the faulty area and tell her how best to fix it. She always felt like this around intelligent people. Everyone was special in their own way but some people never ceased to amaze her with how much they could do. Edith reminded her of the plane mechanics: it was amazing how much they could do with technologies nowadays.
The brunette shut off the engine and exited her vehicle. She made a quick check of the street and noticed the sign that told her she was allowed to park here for a brief period of time. Carmina smiled and turned back to Edith.
"No, not quite the same," she chuckled meekly. "Planes need to be inspected regularly so I nevere need to do much. I feel bad but I never really take my car to be inspected when it needs to be. It's no wonder it stopped."
"Anyway, I can't thank you so much. You are a life saver. Ummm would you like to go for some coffee? My treat. I would like to thank you for your help. Carmina looked at the older woman expectantly. It would disappoint her if the older woman rejected her offer but that was life. What could she do?
"Gas is getting so expensive so people are cutting costs where ever they can," she agreed. "Maybe we should all switch to hydrogen cars or something," Carmina joked.

words | 293 | With the girl's issues temporarily resolved, Edith took the liberty to go ahead and close the car's hood. She couldn't really blame the girl for not getting her car inspected that often. It was always a challenge to find just the right mechanic for a vehicle, especially when people would attempt to overcharge for the silliest of things. The old woman sighed and nodded in understanding. However, at the same time, it seemed her duty to point out that a little more love for the car couldn't hurt.
"You're very welcome, sweetheart. I'll give you the number and address to a place that won't rip you off when they inspect it, alright? They'll take care of it. Just tell them I sent you and I'll come kick their asses if they try any funny business." Her tone was still as sweet as could be. Now… on to the matter about coffee. A grin widened on her face at the offer. She did plan on heading out to a hair appointment later, but that could always wait. Having coffee with a young pilot as cute as a button wasn't something that she got to do everyday. Especially not one who mentioned that hydrogen cars were the way to go.
Aside from everything else, her interest was always sparked by airplane pilots. The mechanics of a plane were similar and yet not at all to that of a cars, and she loved keeping up with the latest technology on that front. It wouldn't hurt to hear about one from someone who was actually in one on a much more frequent basis. "Well, if you're buying, I'm not going to say no. How about you tell me all about that plane of yours on the way?"
(ooc: It's cool, sorry for taking so long, too. If you're not feeling it and want to end it soon, lemme know? We can cut it off and say they went out for coffee?) |
