One would never have guessed that Valoel O'Callaghen might have had a brain behind her golden blonde hair and bright green eyes, but she was in UCLA for a reason. That reason had to be because she was at least relatively book-smart, even if she might or might not have been devoid of all common sense. Since Callum was free from the shackles of rational thought as well, he was more than glad to befriend her upon discovering that they had been lab partners at the start of the last semester, and he and the girl had gotten along just fine. She was vapid, but he was crazy, and together they'd managed to cause several small explosions as well as a mini-fire in the back. Rumours that their professor cried nightly in his sleep had yet to be confirmed, but Cal was quite inclined to believe that it was true.
Hey, it was nice to be thought of fondly. At least they'd gotten out of the class being somewhat memorable, which was more than he could say for the compliant lot that didn't cause any trouble. Besides, she was interesting, and he definitely didn't mind hanging out with her outside of doing projects and work. But work called, and there was an assignment due, which was why they'd agreed to hang out over lunch and burgers one day to talk about the amount of work they had to do and (hopefully) plot some more explosions and mayhem. At least, Cal would do the plotting. Hopefully she would agree.
Cal grinned as he leaned against the large canopy tree where he'd agreed to meet his friend. He could begin a game of Temple Run on his iPhone, but hopefully she wouldn't be too late. Besides, Temple Run was serious business. If she surprised him, he'd probably crash into another wall and wreck his amazing streak. Considering what had happened a couple of nights ago when he'd died painfully and miserably in-game, he wasn't going to take that risk. Not worth it. ___________________

She wasn’t later was she? The young blonde tried her best to look at her watch as she ran across campus. She had promised to meet Callum for a meeting over food about class work. She couldn’t make him wait, that would just be horribly rude, and for Val nothing was worse than being rude. Her problem was that even with all her heart of wanting to be there on time, she had found a distraction on the way. A little kitten had been wandering around in the middle of the street and there was no way Valoel was about to just leave it there. So what did she do? She spent a good ten minutes chasing the cat and then when she finally got it she was at a loss for what to do. Now she had a kitty in her backpack and a friend to meet, what in the world had she gotten herself into? After a good race across the grass she was not supposed to step on she made it to where Callum was waiting. She halted her run in front of Callum and with short of breath said, “So… so sorry for making you wait.”
She took a moment to catch her breath and then with a smile greeted Callum my kindly. ”Good afternoon Callum <3” She greeted Callum with an excited smile and looked around, so where did he feel like eating while they talking? She guessed that Callum would lead the way and she would just follow him, no biggy. Already she had forgotten about the kitten in her bag, luckily it was safe, had air and was taking a quick cat nap.”So where to?” There was no point in leading the way, she knew Callum would take care of it, he always did. He would lead, and she would follow, a wonderful little team.

Cal was all too used to constantly being the one to initiate action-- in fact, it was arguable that save for Allison from the day before, he'd almost always been the one to decide where to go and what to do. Hearing the other person say 'not sure, any idea?' when being asked about what they had in mind was almost standard for him, and sometimes it got tiring. However, today was not one of those days. Today everything was lovely and the world was bright, he and Val were going to maybe gorge themselves on fast food and have a grand grand time. He shot Val a smile, clicking his tongue.
"So what makes you so late? I'd have thought that you'd be good at being punctual." Cal chuckled, leaning against the tree they were meeting at. Tease her a little, wind her up. Why the hell not. "Looks like my faith might have been misplaced." He waited for a reaction before guffawing, giving Val a pat on the back.
"No problem bro. Shall we go to In-N-Out and get some burgers? Or are you more of a healthy foods kind of person?" It hadn't occurred to him that he barely knew Val out of the context of being a lab partner. She was fun and she was cute, but now it was time to actually get to know the other as an actual friend. What was one more buddy, right?

Why had she been late? Oh yes she hadn’t explained herself, oh now was that rude of her? She was just about ready to toss her whole life story in seconds but Callum just made it worse by teasing her. Once again making her both remember and forget about the kitten in her bag in the matter for five seconds. ”No no I am so sorry, I would never intended to do such a thing. I really do try my best to live up to others expectations I will do better I promise!” Then he placed his hand on her back and it all clicked, he was teasing her wasn't he? Sometimes even Valoel had to wonder how in the world she could miss these things. ”Oh a joke, never mind carry on.” Yes, now she would pretend that none of that just happened and carry on with the rest of her time with Callum, maybe even try to pay attention a little better, he was a sneaky one.
Now on the topic of food Valoel did believe in eating healthy, but a pinch of fast food every now an then was not going to kill her. She just smiled and decided to agree with Callum’s first choice, since normally if someone mentioned something, that meant they wanted it. ”I have never been there, but In-N-Out will do just fine. A burger every now and then isn’t a bad thing.” She let the bro comment slide, she had noticed by now that Callum tended to talk very informal, which was fine, but he was also the only one that she spent time with that uses the word ‘bro’ Either way it was time to go eat, she took a look around and was ready to walk off, when she realized she had no clue which way they were going. ”Ummm Callum, maybe you should lead the way.” Her voice was as low as a whisper, she disliked admitting her directional problems, but she knew relying on Callum was a better idea.

Oh god she totally bought it. Cal couldn't help but burst out laughing as Val started exclaiming about how she was sorry she was late, saying that she wouldn't do that again, and he shook his head, giving Val yet another pat on the back. "Dude, chill out. It's not like I'm actually mad. Trust me," he said, "It takes a lot more than that to get me angry. Take my word for it when I say so." It was true-- Cal did get occasionally irritated but he didn't have a very short fuse. He was usually quite the affable individual, and outside happenings tended to get him upset rather than legitimately angry.
He wasn't someone who you wanted mad at you, though. Cal wasn't about to admit it out loud, but he was no stranger to emotional manipulation and pulling strings here and there. His relationship with his mother in itself was testament to that: he loved her, but she'd hurt him, and he was lashing out in response. While he wasn't about to debate the moral implications of that, he could quite easily say that it had seemed like a natural response. But enough of that. He wasn't out here to discuss his teenage angst with Val. Nope, they were going to have burgers. Burgers!
"Never been to In-N-Out? Dude, how long have you been in California for?" It had been one of the first few places his dad had told him to check out, and he had since been a loyal customer. "Their animal style fries are to die for, we should get some of that. I don't know anything about your dietary habits though, so give me a shout if anything isn't a-okay." It was then when she mentioned that he should lead the way.
Well.
That... Probably wasn't the best of ideas.
"Okay. Just let me map where it is," Cal muttered as he pulled out his phone and typed in In-N-Out. The location of the restaurant showed up as being about a ten-minute walk away, and he beckoned for Val to come closer to him so she could see the map as well. "See this? It's just a couple of roads down. We should be able to get there... If I follow the map. My sense of direction sucks," he muttered as he began to walk in the direction the arrow was pointing in. "Come on, hopefully we'll get there within the next five hours."

How long had she been living in California? A fair question but one Val honestly did not know the full answer to, the best she could come up with wasn’t really an answer. ”On and off most of my life.” At least that was of what she could remember or was told. Valoel was both born and raised in California during her younger years, then her parents died. She was then exposed to a life of moving from state to state and lived whenever her new parents wanted to go, most due to work. Either way Valoel could not count the total years she spent in California, but guessed it was about ten, maybe give or take a few years.
Still, Val was not about to unload her history on Callum, food was what was on the plan for today. Even if it wasn’t food she was normally willing to eat, but a burger here and there was not going to cause the end of the world. It did help that Callum seemed excited and Valoel was not the type to be a buzzkill. If this was what Callum wanted then she was more than willing to follow him to any food place. ”A burger and fries will be just fine Callum.” She watched as he pulled out his phone, that was a pretty smart idea, mapping it out like he did. Valoel had never thought of trying such a thing, which made her feel pretty embarrassed about all the times she got lost. A blush rose to her face as she thought about it, when she noticed the warmth to her face and how she was feeling she turned to look away from Callum. After all she couldn’t let him get the wrong idea, though even the right idea was still embarrassing.
”Yes lets go!” She did her best to keep looking away as she followed Callum and his wonderful map. Soon they would be at the burger place, sitting in good seats and enjoying nice cool air conditioning. The kitten in her bag found being carried around relaxing and fell asleep, adding to the reason why miss Valoel had completely forgotten about the cat by now.

He could follow a map. At least, he hoped to hell that he could follow a map, especially an arrow tracking what direction the two of them were walking in. There weren't many people he knew that could get lost using a GPS, and he sincerely hoped that he wasn't one of them... As for Val, he was quite sure that she was one of those said people. All in all, he was humanity's last hope. The final beacon of light for them, guiding their way to being a pair of conquerors. Rise, children, and march in the gallant direction of their booty--
Okay, speaking of booty, Cal had no idea why pirates used the same word for 'treasure' and 'ass'. Unless-- plot twist-- the ass was the treasure. Damn, with that thought, he really should have been born in a different day and age.
But that was a pondering for another day. Right now, Cal had bigger things to do and bigger mountains to scale. "Good to know that you're down with burgers. I'm so hungry I could eat a horse," he exclaimed. On cue, his stomach made a rather ungraceful noise. Wow, he really was getting hungrier and hungrier by the minute. Then again, he was quite sure that needing to eat and wanting to eat were two different things entirely, and most of his cravings and urges fell under the latter category. He consumed so many calories that they would probably be enough to feed an entire third world country for a day.
Time to concentrate on the map though, keep his eye on the prize. Cal kept his eyes trained on the arrow that would take them to their final destination, and started walking, beckoning for Val to follow. The little flush on her face had gone completely unnoticed-- he was too busy trying to follow the map to even register that it had happened. He turned to her as they started their journey. "So, what have you been up to over the past couple of days?" Small talk, the usual. Nothing particularly scintillating, but who knew, they might stumble onto something amazing to chat about later.
Like pirate semantics.

Words: 000 ● Tag: CALLUM SNOW ● Notes: how do you put up with me? Callum was sure interesting, if not a bit of trouble. Not that it bothered Valoel, although he was full of tricks and jokes, she knew very well that he was a good guy. Although his comment about eating a horse got her thinking. Did people really do that? Like would someone really.. Valoel really did not want to think about it. She wasn’t a vegetarian, but there were just some animals that Valoel couldn’t convince herself were good eating or worth killing for food. She did however have to agree that a nice steak or piece of chicken was tasty, but if anyone felt mean enough, all a person would have to do would be to talk about the poor animal and Valoel would be off eating that animal for weeks.
”I don’t know about eating a horse, but I can agree that I am pretty hungry as well.” Valoel did get over her previous embarrassment rather quickly when she realized that she needed to keep an eye on Callum. After all she did not need to lose him on the way, if she got lost there was no way she would be able to find him for hours. She reached out and held on to a piece of his shirt, not wanting to part with him, out of fear of getting lost. ”Well, umm, I’ve been taking care of my plants at home, mother even sent me a new flower, an Antirrhinum to be exact. Oh but I guess you would know them as snapdragons probably. Although they can be found her in the U.S. mother sent me some all the way from North Africa. I do hope that they do well here, I do try my best to keep alive all the flowers mother sends me.” Poor boy, of all topics he would be stuck with this one. Valoel loved her flowers and it was easy to tell with how much she could go on about them. If he was lucky she would stop at some point, probably around the same time they ordered their food, though that was only if he was lucky.

Oh, Val was being far too flattering. A bit of trouble wouldn't have cut it for the mighty Cal, harbinger of doom. Or well, that was what he imagined Bailey saw him as-- he preferred to think that he was leader of awesomeness and all things fun. Alas, most people didn't have a sense of humor, so he would have to deal. It was okay though, because Val most certainly did. Or at least, she was willing to go along with him. If he had intentions of taking over the world, he would have hired her as a minion. Pretty, smart, and all-too-willing to listen to anything he proposed.
But ehh. Too much responsibility, and he would end up sitting on his iron throne eating copious amounts of cake. No big deal, really. The two of them arrived at the eatery, and Cal sniffed the air. "I smell the 8th wonder of the world," he whispered overdramatically. Then again, everything Cal did was more than a little over-the-top. He got into line, gesturing a little so she could step ahead of him. "Ladies first!"
Though if you asked a certain other few people, Cal would be the lady in this scenario. The blonde nodded as she mentioned the plants. It was one of Val's favorite subjects. "Sounds like fun," he said, completely genuine. Whatever made her happy, right? "You gotta take some pictures sometime. I imagine you've got an entire greenhouse full of crazy things in there. How's the one that eats people, by the way? Maybe I could bring my pug there for a visit." Not that he actually wanted Puggerpillar to get eaten, of course. But he just had the best mental image of a plant hopping around in its pot, chasing the poor dog around the house.
Hell yeah.

They made it to the place they were going to eat without any incident, this was a good sign for Valoel. For both students being such terrible people with direction it was only common sense to think that they would have gotten lost on the way, luckily Callum had proven himself well. She took to standing in front of him, takes his cue to go first. Ladies first or not, Valoel thought that it was nice of him to let her go first. The line wasn’t all that bad but it did give her a chance to answer his comments before it was time to order.
“Pictures? Oh of course I could take a few and bring them by, you know if you want you could come over to see them in person? I feel flowers are more beautiful when seen in person, and as for Fluffy he’s doing pretty well. I do doubt that he would eat your dog, I mean Fluffy does find with Marielle’s dog.” Though to be fair Marielle’s dog was still much bigger than Fluffy and knew to stay away. There was that one time Fluffy bit Seven on the nose, and since then the dog kept away from the flower. Still Valoel herself never had a problem with the plant, and she felt that it had a good soul.
Finally they got to ordering and Valoel got a basic burger and fries, since that was what the place was bet at and she had convinced herself that a little greasy food was not going to kill her. They got their took and too to a booth with Val’s lead. She wanted to sit near a window, since siting near sunlight always made her happy. ”So how have you been? After all we’ve been doing is allowing me to talk and go on about flowers, so Callum tell me how things are going with you?”

Like most others, Cal found it interesting to profile people. He wasn't always the best at doing it, but it was still fun to wonder about the thoughts that lay behind someone's head, their psyche and how they worked. Humans were all just using one another, after all, be it for companionship, for friendship, or something more sinister. You didn't exactly have to think of using as a bad thing, as long as you gave something back.
So far, he saw her as someone who was genuinely good-natured. Good thing too, because there weren't many people like that out there in the real world any more. Pleasant, sweet. A tad naive, really? Then again, Val wasn't too difficult to figure out. The blonde smiled as the girl went on about flowers, taking a bite of his burger as he did so.
His face lit up with delight as the juices of the patty and sauce trickled down his throat.
Delicious as always.
"Dude, that would be pretty cool." He really didn't mind taking a look at the crazy plants. Some day someone was going to get killed in that building. He knew it. And when they did, Cal was going to be able to tell the world that he'd survived Val's crazy plants, all of them. "I'll bring Puggerpillar. Hopefully he'll emerge alive." It was then when Val asked about himself, and he shrugged.
"There really isn't much to say." It had been a rather uneventful couple of weeks, anyway. Other than the girl he'd met at the party a while back who had proven to be quite the interesting one, though he hadn't even managed to get a name. "Gone to a couple of parties, marathoned all of Suits in two nights. Spent too long wasting time on the Internet. Oh," he said, pulling his phone out, "My dog arrived at my new apartment a couple of days ago!" With that, he started scrolling through his phone, before brandishing a picture of the dog in front of her.
"Look at him. Doesn't he look adorable?" Well, Puggerpillar looked miserable as usual. But it was just his face. Cal was quite sure that the dog was actually extremely happy, and just bad at expressing it. Bailey's spirit animal!

Val wasn't so sure if she wanted Cal's dog around her flowers, not that she didn't trust Cal, but some dogs liked to dog, and Val would just be heart broken if something were to happen to her flowers. Then there was fluffy, he was friendly, but would he like a new friend in his home? Valoel was not sure about this. "Well as long as you keep him on a leash, no clue if he'd like to eat or dig anything, but of course he is welcomed to come." Even with her worries she couldn't say no, she liked Callun and she was sure that she would like his dog as well, even though she hadn't met him yet. She had of course heard enough about the little pug to know that Callum cared for him greatly. She even made an effort to lean in to see his phone better when he started to share pictures.
"Perfectly adorable! I bet he's extra happy now that he gets to be with you!" Valoel was sure that the two were very happy to be with each other again, Valoel knew she would if she had a pet, although her flowers were kind of close to pets. Then there was Fluffy, did a mutated flower count as a good pet? Valoel wasn't sure but she still took wonderful care of Fluffy and loved him to bits. Just when Valoel had forgotten about the little bundle sleeping in her bag, it decided to squeak and crawl out just a little so that it could steal a french frie from Valoel's plate. "Oh!" She had forgotten to tell Callum all about the little creature. "This little girl was the thing I was gonna tell you about, this was why I was late." She did her best to try and keep the little orange and white kitten from the sight of anyone but Callum.
