Instead of getting some cop-out excuse to not tell her anything, he dove right in. Ronni had to give this guy credit for that—and the story was pretty crazy. She wouldn’t have blamed him if he didn’t want to tell her. If he didn’t look so fucking serious she probably wouldn’t have believed him.
Alien bugs, magic, mansions, people getting eaten—if he wanted to scare her he would have try harder. This was the age of the internet and scary movies. Sure this was all real stuff, but it hadn’t happened to her. She doubted anything like this ever would. Nothing happened to homeless people—oh wait.
She narrowed her eyes and looked up at him.
“Now that wasn’t so fucking hard, was it?” she berated him with a sniff. Her arms uncrossed to resume their previous position—hands on her hips; but this time with a lot less attitude. Her face even managed to lighten up just a little bit. She was brimming with questions now—he sure had gotten himself a handful. Hopefully he wasn’t late to go anywhere because, well, Ronni didn’t give a fuck. He’d opened a can of worms and she was gonna make him close it.
Ronni turned her head to look at the little bug again. “Is she like some sort of fucking alien princess or something? And her father was the alien king? How could something as tiny as her get big enough to eat a fucking behemoth like you?” It was rapid-style. Her voice was calmer now that she was getting her way and getting answers, but she wasn’t going to budge.
Not until he made her.
But now she was curious and she had to know—or poke holes in his story. “Why wasn’t it on the news? I mean I don’t watch the news but I go to fucking school so people would be fucking talking about some giant alien fucktard that’s eating people. Or was there a cover story? Why would a giant alien bug race come here? This stuff doesn’t fucking happen that’s movie shit.”

tagged: character. date: date and time.notes: notes. Moose was vaguely surprised that she didn't seem to be as outraged. He'd expected her to yell at him, to call him an idiot, and tell him that she wasn't ever going to fall for such a load of shit. He supposed hearing another voice--an alien voice in your head was more or less the fast pass to believing a whole bunch of crap you normally wouldn't. All things considered, she was taking it very well, and he found his eyebrows rising slightly as she started to assault him with questions.
"Dunno if he's the king. I don't think she's the princess either. She's kind of like... well, they're bugs. They have a million kids or something. For all I know, all the other bugs are his kids or something." He just so happened to have seen her pop out of the bug's... back. Back? Was it even a back? There was probably a technical term for that part of a bug, but whatever it was, he had no idea. He let out a little grunt. "Don't think she'll ever get like that. She's a dragonfly. He was a... a something else. Not a dragonfly." Something that was certainly a bug, but not like anything he'd ever seen before. Maybe such a bug existed and he didn't know about it, or maybe there was no such bug.
As for the news... he gave a shrug. "Nothing to find. Just a lot of people vanishing, and that was probably on the news, but no one connected that shit together. Dunno, maybe someone's covering it up, because I thought there'd be more. Boss seemed... dunno. He didn't want to talk about it, and he lost a lot of guys." His time in prison had given him a distinct perspective on stuff like that. "Probably someone paying them to keep quiet."

Sure the thing had actually talked to her. It had only said one word but she’d heard it loud and clear—if you could call mind-talking hearing. But what else would you call it? You don’t feel thoughts so it’s not that. Hearing was about as good as she was gonna get.
“If he wasn’t a dragonfly then how the fuck did he father one? I’m no fucking scientist but I’m pretty fucking sure bugs can only have kids with the same type of bug,” she said. However, as soon as it was out of her mouth, she waved the thought away. “Nevermind. You’ll probably just say ‘because he’s a fucking magic alien bug’. Whatever.”
Ronni nodded her head only slightly. How interesting. Not only did she have to worry about where she was going to get her next meal, but also when the big fucking alien bug invasion was going to start.
But still—there was mystery and intrigue and a government cover up in the works. That was a lot more exciting than anything happening in her life. This asshole was off fighting aliens and she was just on the streets beating up punks or getting the shit beat out of her instead. And she suddenly hated him for having a more interesting life than her.
Fuck this guy.
With a wave of her hand, she motioned toward the little bug perched on the asshole’s shoulder. “So why haven’t you turned her into the government yet? There’s a fucking alien invasion in the works and you’re parading around their agent and showing her the place!” She leaned forward slightly and scrunched up her nose accusingly. “You should have smushed her or turned her in. I’m sure the government would protect you from aliens.” |

tagged: character. date: date and time.notes: notes. Good god, was she actually trying to talk to him about... whatever it was that decided what came out of what? Because if so, she was talking to the wrong person. He let out a little snort, followed by a shrug, and cut her off before she rambled about it even more. "No idea. Don't know shit about that, but he popped his back or whatever open and she came out like a newborn all covered in mess, so yeah, I'd say he was her dad."
He raised an eyebrow at her second question, vaguely wondering if she was stupid. Maybe he was. After a moment, he actually chose to squat down a bit, just making an effort to keep his voice down.
"The government, in all my life, ain't ever protected me from shit. I saw a giant bug eat someone, and you know what? News didn't say anything. Not one word. No mention of the hundred or so people who all went missing, who are all now gone and eaten. So one of two things is happening, I figure. Either the government knows and they're hiding it to prevent a panic, in which case they'll hide me to prevent a panic... or someone else is. Either way, someone's hiding it, and if I'm not one hundred fuckin' percent sure they'll be enough to stop her dad, I'm not going to do shit." He paused, then twisted his head, glancing at the bug.
"No offense."
None taken.

Maybe he was tired of looking down at her—whatever it was, Ronni was glad for it. Her neck was starting to get a kink from staring up at him for so long. Fuck standing back from him to fix that, too. She wasn’t going to let him know that he intimidated her, not even a little bit.
She rolled her eyes at his little rant and huffed. “Puh-lease. The government of course would hide it, fucktard. That’s what they fucking do. But that wouldn’t stop them from being like, fucking grateful that you came forward with a hostage. I mean, if this fucking thing is so important to the big alien king he might call off the whole fucking invasion!” he snorted. This guy was obviously stupid, or too scared to do anything. But what did he have to be afraid of?
If she wasn’t fucking scared, he shouldn’t be.
Exasperated, she held out her hand, palm open and facing up. Her other hand fell loosely to her side and she looked at him, head cocked to the side, expression deadpan. “If you’re too fucking pussy to do it, give her to me and I’ll just squash her for you.” And she meant it.
Her fingers wiggled and she waited for him to deposit the stupid bug. “I ain’t afraid of no fucking bug, and neither should you. It ate people because it had the element of fucking surprise. I bet if we’re prepared for it and don’t pussy out about it, we can kill him and his whole insect hoard. So hand her over and we can end this stupid fucking thing once and for all.” Oh he would probably be adverse to it for a while, but she was going to end that bug one way or another. "Or do you want to be a bug's bitch for the rest of your life?"

tagged: character. date: date and time.notes: notes. Moose was, in fact, obviously stupid. It honestly hadn't occurred to him to take Aura as a hostage. She seemed awfully nice to begin with, not at all like her father, and he let out a little grunt.
Aura was also extremely aware of the fact that they were talking about her, and as Ronni offered to kill her, the bug opted to simply avoid the situation entirely--taking off and flying up and out of the alley. Moose didn't doubt that she probably wasn't that far away, but it was still unsettling. What if she told Magnus what had happened?
His scowl was getting perilously close to an outright growl as he stared down at the girl. "Look what you did now. Fuckin' scared her off. Her dad's like eight feet tall and immune to bullets. He's got a fucking army of things just like him, and he'd eat you in a single fuckin' bite." He cursed, not at all amused. "Don't fuck with things that are over your head." Because it was. The whole thing was so far over her head it wasn't even funny. It was easy to talk big, to act like you could just stand up to something like Magnus, but if they ever met, there'd be no content.

She’d forgotten for a little bit that the stupid thing understood English and cursed herself for not being more careful. Of course the dumb bug would fly away when she started threatening her life. But there wasn’t much she could have done about it—ask the bug nicely if she could speak to this behemoth alone?
Well, at least it was gone now and they could talk freely.
Ronni sighed in exasperation and motioned toward the fleeing dragonfly impatiently. “Great fucking job. You let her get away,” she muttered, tapping her foot impatiently on the ground. Now that she had gotten over the initial shock, it was just business as usual.
His little speech got nothing more than several eye-rolls out of Ronni. Oh so now it was her fault. Some lame excuse about bullets and how the thing was huge and eats people. She’d heard it all before—they just weren’t trying hard enough. It was the people’s own fault for getting eaten, not hers. If she’d been there, she was certain things would have gone differently. Idiots—the world was just full of idiots who couldn’t handle themselves properly.
“All I’m hearing out of your fucking mouth is 'oh my god it was so scary, I was so fucking scared, people were being eaten and shit, oh lordy lord I’m a huge-ass man but a big fucking bug had me so fucking scared neehhh nyeehh!’” She waved her hands by her head and faked being scared, and even added a little flourish and 360-degree turn on the spot. Her voice was terribly mocking. Then, she turned back toward him, all serious again. “You know how to handle the stupid fucking thing, you fucking know what to expect from the fucker, so grow a fucking spine!”
This was getting more than just irritating. How could he be such a fucking spineless shit? He was eight feet tall himself and as thick as a tree (in both size and brains, apparently) and Ronni about had it up to here with him so far. “Set it on fucking fire or something next time you see it. You can’t just fucking give up like a little piss-ant.”

tagged: character. date: date and time.notes: notes. A mature, respectable adult wouldn't have been even slightly bothered by the girl's taunts. They would have simply shrugged and moved on with their lives.
Unfortunately, Moose was far from a sane and rational adult. He had brain damage and anger issues, and he didn't like being talked down to by someone who was barely the side of his arm. He actually growled, scowling down at her as he sized himself up, seeming to get even bigger in his annoyance. "Fuck off." He snapped, not at all worrying about that whole 'don't swear around minors' thing. "One day he's going to roll down here, and I'll live and you'll die, because that is what makes you a bratty little kid--you don't have any fucking idea of what you're talking about. You'll just say 'oh I'd have done this' or 'I'd do that', but you haven't ever fuckin' been in that situation. You've never watched someone fuckin' die." She was like some bratty kid who'd just been transferred out of juvie, talking big about how great they were.
They never lasted very long before they learned their place.

They just made her angrier, but they weren’t going to scare her. She wasn’t going to magically realize the fault of her ways just because he was trying to be big and tough. No, he was only going to piss her off more. And the one thing about Ronni was that she was always right—always—and she always had something to say.
She had an answer for everything.
“People fucking die it’s no fucking deal,” she snapped back at him, only slightly intimidated. He was still a big guy and she was still a tiny girl, but that wouldn’t be enough to make her back down—not until she was knocked flat and probably unconscious. “You think you’re so much fucking better than me, don’t you? All big and tough with your ‘I’ve seen shit you’ve never fucking dreamed about’ attitude! But you’re all talk! You couldn’t even protect those people!”
Oh she was riled now. The one thing she hated most was being talked down to and underestimated.
“You think I couldn’t handle it? I can fucking handle anything! You don’t fucking scare me and neither would your giant-ass pimp bug!” She was so angry and frustrated that tears were threatening to leak out. Why couldn’t anyone understand? Ronni wasn’t some delicate little flower, she was most certain she could handle herself but she couldn’t understand why no one else thought she could. “Running away might have been the right fucking choice for you, but I’d rather fucking die than become some bug’s bottom bitch!”
All she wanted was a little fucking respect. Even if she was going about it the wrong way, this was the only way she could think of.
And if making this asshole hit her would get her some, then so fucking be it. So what if he was fucking monstrous? She didn’t care. She’d been hit before and kicked and smacked with heavy objects—it might leave her body broken for a bit, but her spirit would never be broken.

tagged: character. date: date and time.notes: notes. He wanted to snap her in half. Moose wasn't exactly the thug people thought he was when they looked at him, but he had definite anger issues. Ronni's size or presumed innocence (she was less then half his age) wasn't even a slight deterrent for him. Really, the only thing keeping him from reaching out and strangling her where she stood was the fact that if he did, he'd end up in prison again. There was no way to avoid that, and every muscle was tense as he tried to fight the urge.
As it turned out, it wasn't Moose who did the assaulting. No doubt realizing that fists were perilously close to flying, Aura took the moment to zip back down, hovering in the air between the two before firing off a bubble towards Ronni. It must have looked comical, a dragonfly dropping down from the sky and shooting a bubble at her, but it would rapidly turn out to be no laughing matter. The bubble rapidly grew as Moose looked on in utter confusion, and when it reached the size of a baseball, it abruptly burst.
The bubble burst into a thousand tiny needles, scattering everywhere. A few hit Moose, causing pinpricks of pain despite his thick skin, and he immediately reached out, snatching Aura out of the air none too gently. His first priority was getting her out before the girl took a swing at her, and he had no doubt she was going to be furious when she recovered.
He didn't say goodbye--he simply turned and started walking away as fast as his legs would carry him, the dragonfly fluttering in his hands as she tried to escape.

Ronni could tell. She could always tell when she was about to get by hit by someone: she could feel it in her gut, and she could read it on their faces. A slight twitch here, muscles tightening over there. . . . She was treading a thin line and she knew it, but at the same time she didn’t care. Let him hit her. It meant that she had struck a chord, that there was truth in what she said. If he hit her, he was proving her right. It made no sense but that was Ronni for you.
The situation was slightly diffused when the little dragonfly twerp flew down between Ronni and Moose. Ronni stared at it for a second or two, eyes narrowed suspiciously, but all it—or was it a she? Ronni couldn’t remember—did was blow a little bubble that hovered in the air for a second, gaining size. All Ronni could do was stare at it for a few seconds.
Didn’t Moose mention something about this?
Eh whatever.
“The fuck is this?” Ronni muttered. The thing had finally seemed to start to reach its full size—somewhere around apple size—and Ronni started to reach out the poke the fucking thing to pop it, but it just popped on its own. Ronni instinctively flashed her hand in front of her face, startled, and was even more startled by the sharp pains piercing her palm and chest. She made a sharp little squeak of surprise and stumbled away.
Already her arm from wrist to fingertips were dripping with her own blood, and her shirt was starting to break out in little blood spots. It was like getting poked with a dozen needles, or stung by a dozen wasps, only a little bit worse. Like—like when she’d cut her hand with glass a few years ago.
Her good hand lashed out to swipe at the bug even though she’d probably already stumbled out of reach, and not surprisingly she hit nothing but air. A series of curses and profanity spewed out of her mouth and all manner of threats were flung at anyone could hear her. When she finally recovered enough to try to find the one responsible, the big Neanderthal and his pet bug were halfway out of Dodge, his massive bulk fleeing at however fast he could.
“You better fucking run you shitty ass fuck-face! I’m gonna fucking squish her when I see her again!” she shrieked, followed by a very childish scream that lasted until her lungs burned. Then, still fuming, she stormed off, kicking over anything that wasn’t bolted to the floor on the way home.
