One of the virtues of being a part-timer was that she was afforded a lot of time and space to work on her own, away from her workplace. As a result, she ended up working in small cafes and restaurants more often than not, writing articles and editing them for her late-night deadlines. The pressure was stringent and the last-minute work was tiring to say the least, but at least she could say that she genuinely enjoyed what she did on most days of the job.
Today was not one of those days.
Ani frowned as she stared at her screen, rubbing her temples. She'd been proofreading this editorial for the past three hours and none of it seemed to make sense to her. The fact that she'd had a pretty late night the night before probably didn't help, but she was making an effort, and it wasn't being rewarded. She scowled, letting out a loud sigh.
She could really do with another cup of coffee, she thought as she glanced over at her empty cup. Then again, it would require spending money, and she'd already blown most of her weekly budget on a bunch of new dresses earlier on. Oh come on! It wasn't fair, she thought, leaning back in her seat. Some day she'd have her own money and be rich and get paid a ton for her work in the Impedio Society, and then she wouldn't have to think about nearly finishing up her monthly budget and then wondering how she was going to get by without asking her parents for more. She wasn't going to want to live paycheck by paycheck, because it seemed as though this was what she was doing now-- she wanted to be able to save, dammit. It was an adult thing, and that constituted responsibility, right?
... Right?
"Another mocha, please!"
Okay, she'd start being responsible soon. Maybe tomorrow. _____________________________

Koreatown wasn't that far away from where he went to school, and therefore, it was an excellent place to go celebrating the end of finals with lunch. Well, finals had ended for Bailey a few days earlier, but his friend had just finished today and had invited him out to go grab lunch -- which had, as a matter of fact, been very good. Kimichi and bacon pasta was one thing that sounded rather odd in theory, but at least at the restaurant that they had gone to, they had made it work really well. His friend had to leave early to catch a flight, but Bailey had decided to stick around Koreatown for a little longer because... well, he was curious about this one thing. Sweet potato lattes -- supposedly they actually tasted like sweet potatoes?
Might as well try one now that he was here -- despite how close it was to where he went to school, Bailey actually rarely ever found himself in K-Town. His friend had specifically recommended this cafe if he wanted a sweet potato latte, and so... yeah. That was why he was here now, to put it simply. But it was a rather nice place. Small, cozy, the kind of place that always popped up in mind when you thought of intimate but public spaces -- basically, everything that you would want from a coffee shop. Small enough that just as the person in front of him had finished ordering and paying, he could hear someone from the other side of the cafe ordering a mocha. Or another mocha, as they had stated. The voice sounded familiar too, and so Bailey turned his head back to check. Ah, it was her.
Of all the people to run into, Anabel was here too. They had met through a mutual friend, although Bailey hadn't exactly had many adequate chances to hang out with the girl since he had met her. Still, he considered her a friendly enough sort of acquaintance to not mind going out of his way to give nice surprises to, and so he said to the cashier, "One sweet potato latte, and... actually, add that order for a mocha to that too, I'll pay for both." The cashier looked at him quizzically, but said nothing as she added the mocha to Bailey's bill. As soon as Bailey had paid for both of the drinks, he walked over to where Anabel was sitting and said, "... Guessing it's been a pretty rough day for Ani, hasn't it?" He would wait for her to look up before adding with a bit of a sheepish laugh, "Actually, may I sit here? Also, your mocha's been paid for, so don't worry about that."

Oh, she could feel her wallet burn already, she really could. Not that three dollars or so were going to kill her, but they were one step closer to her filing for bankruptcy. Granted, her parents would never allow for that, but she could pretend to actually be broke. You know, the thing that she was supposed to be as a part-timer, if her mum and dad weren't so terribly nice about spoon-feeding her. It was a privilege of being an only child, and to have doting parents. She loved them, she really did, but there wasn't anything wrong with milking it a little, was there? Ah well. So she continued scrolling Facebook on her computer, wondering whether it would be too creepy to comment on someone's status if she'd only spoken to them twice before. #firstworldproblems, she swore. #firstworldproblems indeed.
A familiar voice jolted her out of her dilemma. The dark-haired girl glanced up to see the smiling face of a boy she'd met before, at a party a while back. "Hey Bailey!" she exclaimed as she gestured over to the chair in front of her. "Course you can sit here-- oh my god you didn't have to. That's ridiculous." Though she had to admit that she was secretly pleased. Free anything was always good, right? But she wasn't going to do the whole thing where she pretended to protest about someone paying for her. Nope, she loved it when someone gave her free anything. He didn't have to, yes, but he had done it. That was the point. "Next time it's on me. Thanks so much." She returned the smile with one of her own, before shutting her laptop, crossing her arms across it before resting her head on them.
"Tell me about it man. I miss college," she sighed, speaking into the space between her head and her arms. She glanced back up at him, before slumping into her chair. "Or well, I miss being in college and having summer holidays. I guess I should have waited a couple of months before getting on the job immediately, though I guess working part-time for a while before I ease into the full-time version of journalism is probably better to wean me into it." She'd had to fight her way to do things like this: the Impedio Society had wanted her to go undercover full-time right off the bat, but being in college could burn you out. And she wasn't one to deny that she was going to need some rest, even if just for a little while.

"Really, it's not a problem," Bailey replied with a bit of a chuckle and smile as he took the seat across from Anabel. "Besides, if you're saying another, than it's safe to assume that you've either already had one or had several." And if it was the latter, then it probably wasn't exactly being the kindest on her wallet at the moment. Bailey wouldn't say that he was loaded, but he certainly did have enough on him to spare for, say, one extra mocha. Though, Koreatown did seem to be a bit more... exorbitant with the pricing of their coffee sometimes. Not by too much though. Well, unless you went to the ones that did latte art and a bunch of other fancy things to their coffee. Basically, things not for a casual day like today.
"I was about to say." Bailey gave a bit of a laugh -- he couldn't exactly say that he missed college at this exact moment, seeing as how he had just been released from the vice grip of finals weeks. Not that he was actually on holiday this summer, seeing as how he was using summer classes as an excuse to stay in America over the summer holidays. "It was probably smart to get the job now though -- don't they tend to hire more during the beginning of summer because that's when everyone supposedly has more free time? Don't take my word on it though. I'm not an expert on that kind of stuff." He really wasn't. He could tell you bits and pieces about the places where he had lived before, but good luck if you wanted him to talk about the American job market and the state of its economy. All he knew was that it was not in good shape, but unfortunately, that was the most he could tell you.
"But it's been treating you alright, hasn't it?" Bailey asked, then added, "The job, I mean." The last time they had actually talked, it was... a while ago, actually. Not so long ago that it felt like forever, but there had definitely been a good chunk of time between then and now. At least on Bailey's end, it was because he had been very busy. Busy enough that he felt like he had been up to his ears in projects and assignments and papers. He certainly hoped that Anabel had been having it a bit better at the very least. Not that life had been awful, it had just been... well, busy.

"Only one," she smiled as the purple-haired male sat across from her. "I don't think I'd be able to stomach more than two mocha lattes without bouncing off the walls. I mean, think about all the caffeine and sugar that I'm going to be ingesting in one go, all thanks to you." Ani laughed. "You might regret this after I go on a sugar high and then suddenly crash onto the floor like the majestic creature I am." Granted, she had gone through many caffeine-filled nights, but she could pretend to scare him a little, couldn't she? Ani even gave him a little wink for good measure.
He was a cute guy. She wasn't going to deny herself the prospect of a little flirting. It wasn't like she was going to get any more work done, anyway, and it wasn't as though this was going to come to anything. Or would it? He was definitely somebody who she wouldn't mind dating once or twice, at least casually, maybe a little more. Much as one might not have guessed it from the surface, Ani was a romantic-- she'd only been in one serious relationship, but she'd enjoyed the casual dates and the small flings that she'd had while she was in college.
"As for getting the job, I suppose you're right. Who would have thought that I was actually part of the adult world, huh?" She leaned back and closed her eyes, lips parting in a sigh. "I guess... I don't know," she muttered, "I still... I don't feel ready."
Because she would never be ready. For taxes and filing and having to take care of herself, for leaving school and actually being an independent, functional member of society. She had a job, yes, but there was also all the IS stuff to juggle on the side, the millions of things she sometimes wished she could tell her friends about but really couldn't at the end of the day. Why else hadn't her first relationship worked out? Because the other person hadn't been able to rely on her, to trust her. She had so much on her plate that she became scattered and disorganized. Flaky and flighty as all hell.
"Enjoy it while it lasts," she said as their drinks were set down in front of them. "At least I'm good at what I do, I guess?"

tagged: anabel. time: may 4, 2012 - 2:30PM. speech: bailey. notes: in which i am later than late with starbucks. "Well, I can't say that I'm not completely unprepared if that ends up being the case," Bailey replied, returning Anabel's wink with a smile of his own. While he wouldn't say that he knew exactly what to expect, because he certainly hadn't been around the girl when she was hyped up on caffeine and sugar both, he was willing wager that it could not be as bad as trying to wrangle in a certain couple of friends who might as well be caffeine highs and sugar rushes personified. Look no further for experience in dealing with the supposedly unable to be dealt with than Bailey Whelan over here.
"Mmh, I don't think any of us feel ready in that regard," Bailey said, glancing up at Anabel. He certainly didn't think that he would be completely ready himself when graduation finally did roll around a couple or so years from now. Graduating from high school felt like yesterday, and that was, if he really did take a step back to look at things, actually a while ago as it was. He didn't feel like anymore of an adult now than he did back then, and as birthday after birthday had proven again and again, feeling like one was ready for adulthood did not come with age.
Enjoy it while it lasts, Anabel had said. Bailey made a sound of agreement over the rim of his cup as he took a sip of the sweet potato latte which... tasted a bit like a candied sweet potato with milk? Interesting, he hadn't actually been expecting it to taste all that much like a sweet potato. "I'm pretty sure you're more than just good at what you do if you found a job as quickly as you did," Bailey replied as he set the mug down, just as the waiter from earlier returned and,,, placed a piece of cake on the table? Bailey raised a brow, fairly sure that he hadn't put a slice of cake with his order, surprisingly. "Oh, sorry, I think this is the wrong table? I don't think that a cake was ordered here."
