words | 405 | Kyu-Sik did in fact spend more time at his apprenticeship than he did at his parent's store. He was there nearly every weekday. However, life at work there had been considerably more ordinary. No strange people coming in, no weird repairs-- it was just taking measurements, cutting, sewing, and slaving over whatever his boss requested him to do for the day. He didn't hate it. He enjoyed sewing and the assignments were a welcome distraction from everything else going on in his life, even when he was given less desirable tasks.
One task that usually befell him was dealing with the common customers that his boss decided he was better suited for. That was how he knew Rhiannon. He didn't know a lot about her when he really thought about it, but he knew that she was a determined fashion student who had been a regular customer since she was pointed in the tailor's direction. Kyu-Sik often preferred to keep to himself, but after awhile he decided he didn't really dislike Rhiannon's company on the few days that she just didn't seem to leave.
Today was one of those days of her busily working on something important for… well, Kyu-Sik wasn't sure what it was for. He hadn't asked, he had just helped her find what she needed and curiously glanced over at her every now and then to see how it was coming along. He hadn't talked with her much since she had convinced him to give her a ride to that party, which he wasn't going to let happen again after what a catastrophe it had been. He already didn't enjoy huge social gatherings, adding death and giant snakes to the mix didn't help. In fact, he was choosing to ignore the topic as much as he could. The boy wasn't going to bring up the mess himself and he was hoping that she wouldn't say anything just yet.
Plus, he had his own work to finish. For most of the time he had been quietly cutting fabric, matching threads, pinning things together for sewing, and hand stitching a few things. It was only when he got down to sewing buttons on a vest that he finally looked over to check on her again.
"Are you doing alright?" He asked, resting his arms on the desk he was sitting at and leaning on his elbows for a moment. "With the sewing, I mean." |

tagged: kyu-sik. time: may 9, 2012 - 4:41PM. speech: rhiannon. notes: please pm me if there are problems. It was supposed to be calmer after finals. This wasn't calm. She was supposed to of have headed home for a few days after moving all of her things to her new apartment and setting it all up. Maybe catch up with some friends from high school who were also back for the summer, go out a bit, shop around, bug her diva of a little brother for juicy details on his love life (because let's not lie, it was entertaining as hell to hear about which guys he had dated over the course of the school year). That was what she was supposed to be doing now. But no, that was not what she was doing, because lo and behold. her cousin's parents in Taiwan had called her up last minute to have her make a grad dress for her cousin -- for free. Stuff about it about it being a familial favor or something like that. Make a dress. Last minute. For free. Cue internal screaming. A lot of internal screaming.
It didn't help that she wasn't exactly on good terms with her father's side of the family either -- actually, none of the Chou siblings were particularly well-liked by the side of their family that lived in Taiwan, but no one told you that. Needless to say, she couldn't exactly weasel any amount of payment out of them because of this, and that was the story of how she ended up here at the tailor's where Kyu-Sik worked the moment the store had opened. A friend had helped her bring her sewing machine over while she toted around her materials and parts of the dress that she had already made over the past few days -- but her cousin's dream grad dress was so damn specific that from that point on, she preferred to be able to grab the materials she needed without making multiple trips. Especially since she had to ship it out tomorrow if it was to get there on time. Hence why she was here.
The dress was... close to almost done when she heard Kyu-Sik ask her how she was doing though. "Huh?" Rhiannon looked up, seeming a bit surprised at first as she snapped out whatever trance of work she had been in. "Oh, right, this. Well, it's... sort of almost done. I just need to finish stitching this lace onto the bodice and finish the ruffles on the skirt, then sew them together so that I can add the zipper and... yeah, it should be done after that." She paused to massage the back of her neck and sighed, "It's... not the best thing I've ever made, but... does it look okay for something made in three-ish, four-ish days?" She would have preferred to of have had at least a week to work on it, but... well... her cousin and her cousin's parents seemed to think that she could magically conjure dresses overnight or something. Oh, she wished she could. Finals would have been that much easier.

words | 305 | They had been working quietly in the same room for so long, that breaking the silence did seem a little sudden. Kyu-Sik hadn't meant to startle her, so he waited patiently for her reply. She was sort of almost done, sure, but that still seemed like a lot left to do. Inserting zippers was always his least favorite task. He made a quick glance at the clock before looking over the pieces she was working with currently.
"It looks good to me," he answered with a nod. He was about to reassure her by also saying he'd wear it, but no he wouldn't. It was a dress and he was not the sort of person to wear dresses. Still, the hems seemed fine from what he could see, and she was working with some decent fabrics.
For only a few days it was pretty impressive that she had finished as much as she had, especially with what had gone on in the days before. While the rare occasion did occur where he had to get something important done quickly himself, nothing had been quite what she was working with. He often took care of men's suits more than he did formal dresses, so he couldn't imagine the difficulty that came with figuring out the construction of the dress in such short time. However, she was into fashion design as a career. He could imagine that it was just something more up her alley than it was his.
It was just why she had worked on the dress so quickly that he didn't understand still, so he did find himself at least a little curious. "Is this a last minute project for school?" Kyu-Sik finally asked. He leaned back and started stitching at the last of the vest buttons again. "The semester is over, isn't it?" |

tagged: kyu-sik. time: may 9, 2012 - 4:41PM. speech: rhiannon. notes: please pm me if there are problems. It could have been better, she knew that much -- ideally, she would have made the dress from a material that wasn't as satiny. Yes, satiny fabrics could look nice, but it could also look... well, a bit cheap. But that was if it was costume satin -- the material she was using was far superior, but that wasn't to say that she wished that it wasn't as shiny. It looked just a little bit too much like a high school prom dress for her liking but... it couldn't be helped. At least it still looked good, though -- she was willing to bet her money on Kyu-Sik having a much more critical and discerning eye for craftsmanship in clothing than her cousin or her family would.
"Okay, good," Rhiannon replied, removing the pins in the next bit that she was going to sew down. "Ugh, I'm so glad I saved the pattern from the last dress I made, it would have been such a pain to make a new one." All things considered, this was almost exactly like the dress she had worn to the masquerade (which, thankfully, could still be worn again after a trip to the dry cleaners -- the shoes had been lost in the shed fire though, bummer). just... lacier and more ruffly. And obviously in a dark, silvery-gray rather than deep plum color, and larger overall -- aside from the bust area. (Rhiannon did take a rather petty sense of pride in being more petite and better proportioned. She, at least in her opinion, was the prettier cousin in the family -- but no one needed to know that private opinion. Yet.)
She frowned at the thought of the masquerade though. Rhiannon had been meaning to apologize to Kyu-Sik for dragging him through all of that trouble, but... well, she hadn't exactly found an opportune moment to bring up the subject. Oh, well. The girl figured that she would just grab the opportunity if it presented itself. No need to stress about it. Though she wondered if she should be reacting more about it -- yes, she had done a lot of thinking about it and had a nightmare at least once about the snakes, but... she hadn't been outright panicking about it repeatedly as she would have expected of anyone else who had seen a magical talking snake with murderous intent -- but then again, Kyu-Sik hadn't said anything about it either, so maybe this was okay? Maybe pretending it never happened was the best course of action. She could be content with that. Maybe. Possibly.
"Ah? Oh, no, this isn't for school. Thank god, that's done and over with though." Yeah, no, there was no way that she could have drawn ninety-nine designs based off of a theme for a collection (she had chosen to interpret types of tea as dresses), narrowed said designs down to three choices, created patterns for the selected three, picked out materials for said dresses, and sewn all of them in less than a week. "My cousin's parents wanted me to make her a dress for graduation," Rhiannon continued, shaking her head as she gave a heavy sigh. "The problem is that they think I'm a wizard who can magically pop dresses out of thin air overnight." She viciously stabbed the pins she had removed into the tomato-shaped pincushion with an almost childishly peeved look on her face. "For free too. This isn't just a familial favor, it's straight up exploitation and child labor..."

words | 365 | Saving patterns definitely did help in the time frame she was working with. Kyu-Sik still found himself impressed by the timeframe, though. He glanced over at what she was working with again. "Oh, was it the one you wore the other night?" He hadn't noticed the similarities until she mentioned it, but he could see that one. Though it could've very well been something else she had done for all he knew. The plum one had been classier if he remembered well enough, but he knew different occasions called for different kinds of dresses. Silver was for graduations, plum was for… being attacked by giant snakes. For a moment he wondered if he should ask if it came out okay. Or if she had been doing okay beyond just sewing. However, he let the moment pass for the time being.
He just nodded as she explained. Although the first thought that came to Kyu-Sik's mind was simply telling someone 'no' to such a ridiculous favor, he was all too familiar with being stuck doing tedious and difficult things for others. In his case, when his boss wasn't getting him to do just about every unwanted chore, he was usually helping his parents out with something these days. There was his sister, too, but he had tried not to worry about that while she was away. Judging by Rhiannon's expression, though, the situation was probably different than his own. She didn't seem very happy and she wasn't very subtle about it.
Either way, he could relate to her plight. "I don't know, I would take advantage of it. Sounds like something you could hold over their heads next time you need something from them," he offered with a wry grin. He wasn't the best at making jokes, but he let the idea of a sewing-based mafia amuse him for a very brief moment before he checked the clock again.
"Anyway, I'm almost done with these. Is there anything I can do to help?" He couldn't just leave her in the shop when he finished his own work, but he didn't want to be there piddling about while she worked. It made sense to him to offer. |

tagged: kyu-sik. time: may 9, 2012 - 4:41PM. speech: rhiannon. notes: please pm me if there are problems. "Yep, it's the same pattern," Rhiannon said, looking up at Kyu-Sik. She was a bit surprised, to be honest -- while she knew that he was aware that her dress had been plum-colored (because she had told him, and being matchy-matchy with your date was an aesthetically important thing -- friend dates were not exempt from this), but she didn't think that Kyu-Sik had actually paid attention to how the dress looked. It was actually a pleasant little thing to learn, actually, that he could tell that the dress she was making was the same pattern. "Just more ruffly. And with more lace." Both of those were lovely things indeed, but it did feel rather excessive with the sheen of the fabric -- and that fact that even Rhiannon, who did indeed love her ruffles and lace and frills very much, thought it excessive was saying something.
She did, however, giggle at the mention of probably being able to use the dress as leverage for the next time she needed a favor from her relatives in Taiwan. While she hoped that she never would (because dealing with her father's side of the family was a bit of a pain), Kyu-Sik did have a very good point, and she clapped her hands together as she replied, "Ah, possibly, actually! My grandmother is always going on and on about why I can't have picked a more, ah... sensible career path, like the cousin that this dress is going to. She's going into law, last I heard." She did, as a matter of fact, get a lot of flack from her father's side of the family for her major -- it was also very clear that her grandmother favored her cousin. Very, very clear indeed, and it actually gave Rhiannon a great amount of glee to have something to snip back at her with. Politely and most definitely sweetly, of course -- snark was best when kept classy.
"Could always say that her favorite granddaughter wouldn't have had the dress of her dreams if I hadn't gone ahead and went along with my "fruitless" major~" A pause, and then Rhiannon added with a bit of an airy, sheepish laugh, "Sorry, that must have seemed incredibly rude of me to think such a thing -- ah?" Help? Rhiannon's gaze followed Kyu-Sik's to the clock and -- oh. Well then. Look at the time. She hadn't even realized that so much time had passed since she had set out to work that day. Yes, help would definitely be nice if they only had that much time left before closing. "Actually, yes, help would be very much appreciated -- uhm, how good are you at sewing ruffles? Because if you can match the ones that are on the skirt part already, do mind helping me finishing them up? I mean, you'll have to set up a second machine with a ruffler foot, but I've got an extra spool of the exact thread I'm using here, so if it's not too much trouble, would you mind?"

words | 507 | The slight grin appeared on Kyu-Sik's face again when he heard her sheepish laugh. It didn't sound like she was in a very fun position and it was one that he was less familiar with. Nor did he ever see the appeal of law school, but he recognized that was because of his own personal likes and dislikes. When he thought about it, he actually didn't know his own grandparents terribly well. He just knew that his father's mother tended to call them up on Chuseok and yell in Korean that she loved them and they needed to visit again one day. That was usually it. Needless to say, he knew even less about his cousin aside from occasional notes from his parents. With his own parents into music, his original career desires hadn't been questioned. He had been supported all the way. Which… well, that was what made his current apprenticeship a mystery to his family. He knew why he had made the decision to work for a tailor even if he couldn't help but think he had disappointed someone other than himself.
Rather than say anything right away, he just shook his head when she accepted his offer. "I don't mind, hand me the spool. As long as there's something to match, it's not a problem," he confirmed with a nod, stitching at the last button before he finally put the items down and stood to set up one of the shop's machines. He had grown up sewing to fix hand-me-downs and to repair his other clothes, and he had always been fairly good at it. Going into the field as a tailor's apprentice forced him to fine-tune the skills he had and he had been quick to do so. Kyu-Sik liked to think of himself as a rather fast and efficient sew-er, even if he was a bit too picky with his work every now and then. It was easiest with examples to go by. He could see what needed to be done and then learn to do it himself. So, while sewing dresses was not what he usually did, her request wasn't too bad. It wasn't his his first time sewing ruffles. As long as he could see what she had done, he could at least copy it.
After spending a moment looking through a cabinet on the side he finally pulled out the parts he needed. The ruffler foot, which always looked a bit like a bizarre tiny can opener to him, and the machine's tiny screw driver. It was a bit of an old machine to deal with, but after a few months he had learned how to make it do what he wanted it to. Setting it up was easy enough.
"I guess it's frustrating to have your grandmother always questioning your major. But as long as you enjoy it, oh well?" She seemed like the sort of person who was rather proud of what she did, so he had to assume as much. "You do enjoy it, don't you?" |

tagged: kyu-sik. time: may 9, 2012 - 4:41PM. speech: rhiannon. notes: please pm me if there are problems. "Alright, just give me a second." Rhiannon paused her task momentarily, reaching over into the bag that was sitting next to her. Now, where could that darn spool of thread be? "No, that's not it... that's not it either -- aha! There we go." She pulled out what was a new spool of thread and held it out for Kyu-Sik. "Thanks for helping out, by the way. Also for letting me drop by here so often. I really appreciate it."
What could she say, this specific tailor shop was kind of her little secret when it came down to where she got her supplies and all that stuff. She had managed to find a plethora of things that she wouldn't of been able to in most of the shops that her professors wrote down on their syllabuses, and that effectively made it so that she would have to spend days waiting for something to arrive. And that was always a good thing -- especially when time was of the essence, like now.
While Kyu-Sik was busy setting up a second machine, Rhiannon went back to sewing the lace onto the bodice. She really did have to be careful to not mess up with this though -- the lace was one of the few things that she had yet to find in Kyu-Sik's shop, and if she remembered correctly, the place she got it at was fairly out of the way. So everything had to be perfect, because at the end of all of this, the most she would have left of that lace would probably only be enough to make herself a hair barrette or something.
"Well, if I'm perfectly honest, my dad's side of the family is usually pretty frustrating to deal with. You know, the whole thing with... well, stereotypical Asian parenting, for lack of a better way of putting it." She supposed she had gotten off on that end pretty lucky -- her parents wanted her to do well and had encouraged her to always aim high while she was in school, but they never expected her to earn perfect grades. Good grades, yes, but not perfect-above-4.0-with-extracurriculars-on-top good. "That being said, of course I like my major. I mean, yes, midterms and finals are horrible and I complain a mile a second when they're going on, but I would have already switched out to something else if I didn't like it, you know?"
She really did love fashion design when it all boiled down though. Each and every step, from finding inspirations and materials for her concepts and getting those concepts down on paper as designs to figuring out exactly how those designs would translate into patterns and then the actual sewing as well. Of course, she wanted to be famous someday too, but that was her ambition speaking there. But right now, as much as she did love fashion design, she wanted this dress done so that she wouldn't have to receive a call every single night asking her for a progress report. She really needed to have something good happen after this. Like a good meal or something. Actually, that didn't sound like a bad idea. No, it was definitely a good idea, and Rhiannon asked, "Hey, Kyu-Sik, what do say about dinner after this?" Well, it couldn't hurt to ask, and he was helping her out a lot with all of this.

words | 495 | Kyu-Sik took the spool that was held out to him. "Don't thank me. It's a business, after all. My boss thinks you're profitable." Which was just the honest truth. Had she just been some girl that came over and sewed at their shop without actually buying anything, his boss probably would have put an end to it pretty quickly. He wasn't a cruel person, but it was indeed a business. However, she was a great customer while she was around and she didn't get in the way of their normal operations. It seemed like a win-win situation on both sides of the fence.
He finished setting up the machine as she explained more. "Yeah, I understand." He understood the parenting trope she was talking about anyway. There were times when the boy wondered if he had been victim of stereotypical Asian parenting himself. However, he had never been pressured into being a dutiful son. He grew up seeing what his parents did, and both he and his sister had an unspoken understanding of what was expected of them. Back when he was younger, he enjoyed making his parents happy. He had done very well for himself in school without any pressuring from an external source anyway.
As he had figured, she at least enjoyed her major. Midterms and finals seemed terrible for everyone based on what he heard, so that helped. Though, he couldn't quite wrap his head all the way around just switching gears if it was something that she didn't like. It made sense in concept, yes, but for whatever reason it seemed like it should've been a bit more complicated than that, too. Still, he nodded to her after he finished threading the sewing machine.
To say he was hesitant about the question that came after was putting it lightly. He a filled quiet pause with sewing, doing a test run on some scraps of fabrics to make sure he had the foot set properly and to make sure that he could get the right size for the ruffles. So far so good on that front, but finding an answer for her was more difficult. He was prone to avoid most social situations outside of work in the first place. Adding that to the fact they had nearly died a week ago when he finally did agree to go out somewhere, he thought his hesitance was understandable. It would have been easy to just say no and carrying on with a routine that felt oh so normal after what had happened. Though, it was just dinner. He had formed a bad habit of skipping lunch and food didn't sound bad.
Kyu-Sik let a whole minute pass before he finally even glanced up at her. "I guess. Just as long as we don't get eaten by anything." He wasn't sure whether or not he was joking when he finally replied to her. Apparently it was a possibility. "What did you have in mind?" |

tagged: kyu-sik. time: may 9, 2012 - 4:41PM. speech: rhiannon. notes: please pm me if there are problems. "Well, tell him that he'll probably be seeing me for at least another semester or so," Rhiannon said with a bit of a laugh. Hopefully, she would be off to New York by the time the next year rolled around, but that remained to be seen -- it was completely dependent on whether or not she could get into Parsons by then. Well, third time's the charm, right? Hopefully it was, because if she didn't, it would mean that she would have to finish her junior year at Otis as well, and at that point, transferring would be kind of pointless even by her standards. She would only have one year left then, and at that point, she might as well just complete her degree...
She occasionally glanced up from her work to see how Kyu-Sik was doing with the ruffles, but for the most part, she was focusing finishing getting all of that lace stitched on as carefully as possible. While she let the other have his time to ponder the option of getting dinner (though she would poke him again about it if she didn't get some sort of response back in five, maybe ten minutes), she wondered exactly what she would have done if she did, for some reason, decided to switch majors. What would she do in that case? Probably have go to a community college or a technical school so that she could get a cosmetology license or something and then go and work as a makeup artist. Or figure out what major she would have to do in order to become a fashion editor for a big-name publication.
That was the thing -- she couldn't see herself working in a field that was not at least in someway related to fashion and beauty or the like. There just really wasn't anything else out there that she could imagine herself being happy with doing for the rest of her life. She pulled out a few more pins from the bodice she was working on and poked them into the pincushion, and was about maybe a little under halfway done with the lace by the time Kyu-Sik spoke up again. As long as they didn't -- oh. Right. Well, yes, that had happened last time they had decided to go somewhere. "No, I don't think we're going to have to... go through that again," Rhiannon said with a bit of sheepish laugh as well as a shudder. That had not been quite the evening she had been expecting, to say the least. Not at all.
"Yeah, no, none of that -- ah? Well, it depends on if you want something quick, or don't mind sitting down for a bit. There's an In-N-Out in Westwood if you want burgers, but if you want something nicer, there's Yardhouse and Rock'N Fish at LA Live. I mean, there's also Providence in Hollywood which is super high-end, but I doubt we'd want to spend that much money." And that was when she had another idea, and it seemed like a good one -- it wouldn't strike her that it might have been just a tad imposing until she got home later that night. "Actually, if there's anywhere you know around K-Town with good food, I wouldn't mind going there? I actually... haven't had the chance to go poking around over there all that much, surprisingly." She had been there... three times tops, actually, and one of those times was to grab Paris that a k-pop girl-band's CD's special limited edition release.

words | 478 | Another semester or so of having her around wouldn't be that bad. He figured he would still be there as well, as it still seemed to be his best option for the time being. Kyu-Sik gave the slightest of smiles and nodded before concentrating again on the task she had given him. Once he decided he was happy with the ruffles he was getting from the scrap fabric, he finally dared to tackle the ones on the actual skirt. He took the fabric and lined everything up. The first few stitches were done cautiously, as he wanted to make sure he understood how the fabric would move before he really started whipping through the ruffles. Everything checked out well enough, so he picked up his pace.
He knew he actually shouldn't have brought up the incident, even in a joke, but it had been on his mind. Although Rhiannon's sheepish laugh wasn't really reassuring to him, there was the slightest odd sense of comfort in that she too was assuming something like that was not going to happen again. How could it? He had gone eighteen years without being attacked by a giant snake, so surely it would've been at least another ten before something like that even sort of reoccured. Not that there was much logic to it in the first place. It made the most sense to think that it just wouldn't reoccur at all.
The young man was happy to focus on dinner. Burgers weren't bad, so he would keep In-N-Out in mind as he considered the options presented. Something nicer would've been better actually, but he was shying away from the idea of going anywhere too high-end. She was right in that he wasn't really keen on spending that much money. He never really could justify spending too much on food for any sort of occasion. He was a little surprised by her suggestion after all of that, but actually he felt a little more confident in a decision based there. The idea suited him just fine. After living there his whole life, he hoped that he knew a few places. If Koreatown had anything it was at least a lot of good food. Plus, being near his house would mean getting home would be easier for him. Unless she needed help getting home herself, but for now he was assuming that wouldn't be the case.
"There are plenty of good restaurants," he answered, pausing for a moment to check how the ruffle seams were going so far. It looked fine from a technical standpoint, so he would continue without worrying too much. "There's a lot of barbecue, some good Mexican places, a nice pho place…" He trailed off before an idea finally struck him. It was the option best enjoyed before it got too hot outside. "What do you think about shabu shabu?" |

tagged: kyu-sik. time: may 9, 2012 - 4:41PM. speech: rhiannon. notes: please pm me if there are problems. Leave it to Kyu-Sik to know where all of the good food places were in Koreatown. Or most of them, at least. You could live in an area your entire life and still run into little gems of places that you hadn't been to before every now and again. That had certainly been the case with San Marino for Rhiannon, though even more so now since she spent most of her time in Los Angeles and hadn't been able to properly nose around her original haunt. But as for the options that Kyu-Sik was bringing up... hmm, well, it wasn't exactly an easy decision. She knew for a fact that she would most likely overeat tonight no matter where they went (after the hell of the past few days, she was pretty sure she deserved it), so... where could she get the most bang for her buck?
Shabu-shabu sounded really good though, and to be perfectly honest, she hadn't had it for quite a while. When was the last time again? Probably before she started college, if she really thought about it. Well then. There was a problem that needed to be rectified right about now. "Yeah, shabu-shabu sounds great, actually," Rhiannon replied with a nod. "Would it be alright if I got a ride with you there? I can definitely manage on my own getting home from there, but getting there might be more convenient if we both took the same vehicle." That, and chances were that she would arrive wherever it was they would be going significantly later than Kyu-Sik would if she took the bus there. Ah, the problems with not having a license. Unfortunately, she wasn't exactly keen on learning how to drive either.
She peeked over at Kyu-Sik to check on how the ruffles were going, and seeing that they were actually looking exactly as she would have hoped them to be, At this rate, she would definitely have the dress done by tonight and could drop it off at the post office as soon as it was open tomorrow and it would be out of her hair for good. Then she could start focusing on her summer and doing all of the things she wanted to do -- and had to do. She figured it was best that she get a head start on a couple of things that she knew she were going to be assignments for the following school year. Some professors always used the same projects and class structure, after all. All the better to get some things over with.

words | 429 | Shabu-shabu it was then. That was actually something he could look forward to the more he thought about it. The last time he had gone out for shabu-shabu had been around the Lunar New Year with his parents. He was under the mentality that it hadn't been that long, as he was someone who didn't really go out for dinner with another person all that often in the first place. However, it had still been a few months. He always enjoyed it when he did have it for dinner, too. The meat was always good, sure, but what he liked best were the tofu pockets and the different kinds of rice cakes. Those favorites were a bit bland for most, but that same blandness seemed to be what he enjoyed. Plus, there was always kimchi to the side. He could never seem to stop himself from asking for it.
Kyu-Sik didn't hesitate this time to give a nod when she asked about a ride there. "Yeah, of course. It wouldn't make sense for you to take the bus there." He hadn't even thought about going there separately. It saved money and it saved them both time in the long run, so that was the best option. That and it probably would've been rude to make her find her way there by herself. He figured she was capable, but still.
"The place I usually go to is kind of hard to find, because it's in an apartment building next to a hair salon. It's a little small, but it's usually quiet and the food is good. At least it was the last time I was there. It's been awhile since I've gone out." Well, gone out to anywhere other than the masquerade party. When he said it that way he realized it didn't sound so great, but he was sure the food would speak for itself whenever they made it there. Hopefully.
As he spoke, he was keeping an eye on his hands and the fabric below them. It seemed like everything was coming along nicely from his point of view. However, he still took a small pause to again compare it to what had already been done. Just to be on the safe side. It wasn't his project to be making mistakes on, so he felt better handling it cautiously. The ruffles seemed a bit much with what he had added for her so far, but he figured that was how it was supposed to be. She wasn't telling him to stop what he was doing yet at least. |

tagged: kyu-sik. time: may 9, 2012 - 4:41PM. speech: rhiannon. notes: extremely sorry for the late reply! To be honest, Rhiannon's favorite part of shabu-shabu was being able to dip everything in ponzu sauce before she ate it. Most shabu-shabu places gave you both ponzu sauce and a sesame sauce, but the last few times she had gone to eat it, she had specially requested that a double helping of ponzu sauce be given to her instead of one of each. Well, okay, she wasn't sure if it was ponzu sauce that was being used, but she was assuming that was what it was called. She could be wrong on that one, but oh, well, it couldn't be helped if she was. There was very little that they could put in front of her that she wouldn't just dip in the soup to cook and eat. Not unless it was a plate of bugs or something that was still alive -- but that was unlikely, right? Because if there was, that was surely a health hazard.
"Hey, you know your way around K-Town better than I do," Rhiannon replied with a bit of a shrug, then added with a bit of a smile, "So I'll take your word for it." Wasn't there something about how a lot of hidden gems for food were these sort of hole-in-the-wall places? Not that she would really know -- that was just what one of here friends swore by or something like that. Still, she did believe that someone who knew a place better than she did would have a better idea of where to eat. Online sources as to what was yay or nay could only get you so far, unfortunately.
A few more stitches later, and she was done with attaching the lace. Not exactly her neatest job, unfortunately, but unless you knew exactly what you were doing in terms of sewing and the like, chances were that it would be unnoticeable. As long as it held up and did what it was supposed to -- this was the consequence of putting her on a deadline that was, in all senses of the word, ridiculous. "Alright, that's done then," Rhiannon said, then peeked over at Kyu-Sik. "This thing is going to end being more ruffles than anything else by the end of this," she commented before going back to check over the bodice to see if there were any mistakes. It was true that the skirt was honestly more like a layered cake of ruffles no matter which way you looked. "Hmm... I think just finish that row and it should be good to go."

words | 386 | Kyu-Sik nodded at her instruction and did as told. One more line of ruffles and the sewing she had assigned him to was finished. After, he removed it from the machine and checked for any loose threads. "It's a lot of ruffles," he concurred flatly without any pause. It was hard not to notice, especially as he held the skirt up to look over his sewing one last time. He handed it over to her so that she could combine the pieces. "Your cousin must really like them, I'm guessing." That was his roundabout way of asking whose idea it was to make it so ruffly. Not that he had anything against it, he was just curious. Again, he couldn't be sure if it was something new in style or not.
He left her to finish the dress, as from what he knew there was just combining the dress's parts and adding in a zipper remaining. Still, he kept an ear open in case she did need help with anything else. In the meantime he removed the ruffler foot from his sewing machine and returned the extra spool of thread to her side. Then he went to work folding the random shirts, suits, vest, and whatnot that still lied around the shop from the busy day.
Already he was making a mental note of the things he would have to take care of when he came in tomorrow. It would probably include a lot of ironing, but actually that wasn't so bad compared to what he normally had going on there. Assuming that no one came in with some randomly large order, or that his boss didn't have him taking care of some sort of bizarre busy work, then it wouldn't be that bad of a day. Kyu-Sik only paused for a moment when he was checking the articles left hanging to the side of the room. He pulled out an orange plaid suit that looked as if the 70's had thrown up on it. If he remembered correctly it had been brought in by an older customer who was asking to see if it could be expanded, but he had trouble imagining even an older person wearing something like it.
A little warily, he glanced over to Rhiannon. "The 70's aren't coming back, are they?"

tagged: kyu-sik. time: may 9, 2012 - 4:41PM. speech: rhiannon. notes: oh no, it's fine, i liked the post! "A little too much, even for me," Rhiannon confirmed, then shrugged her shoulders with a bit of a giggle. She might have also adored her frills and ruffles and lacy things, but at least she knew when too much was actually too much. It was a something you had to learn if you wanted to make it in fashion design, or any field that required innovation, really. You had to push the boundaries, but you didn't want to rip them apart and go rocketing off into the metaphorical unknown. "I mean, if she wants to look like a metallic wedding cake for graduation, that's her thing to deal with, not mine. And say that it does catch on -- I could safely say that I started the trend with my design." Nothing wrong with finding things about a situation that would benefit you, right?
She hummed in acknowledgement when Kyu-Sik returned her extra spool of thread, and added as she started to sew the skirt and bodice together, "Thanks for your help by the way, I really appreciate it." And he had done a good job at it too -- the ruffles were more or less exactly how she wanted them to look like. Maybe she should buy him an extra helping of whatever it was he liked to eat at shabu-shabu later. It would be like positive reinforcement, except not quite -- she just wanted to return the favor, that was well. Though she certainly wouldn't complain if that meant he wouldn't mind helping her out again in the future if she decided that she needed it. Building up her network and gathering her resources was something that she absolutely had to make sure she was doing, after all.
Rhiannon was finished attaching the two parts of the dress together and had started on the zipper by the time Kyu-Sik asked her about... the 70's coming back? She paused for a moment, mentally flipping through all of the fashions that had shown up on the runway recently. Crop tops, neons, bold prints, wide-legged pants, and so on. So far, it was all indeed very 70s. However, she had yet to see the platform shoes from the era, though there had been wedge sneakers starting to pop up, so perhaps that was an indicator? There were still droves of people in their skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors as they had for the past several years though, which didn't exactly scream 70s at her, but they did have something to do with the punk movement that had started up int he 70s, so maybe it was still applicable? "Entirely possible, actually," Rhiannon concluded. "I mean, it's not going to be like the 70s in full swing, but I'm definitely seeing some trends making a comeback."
She eyed the orange plaid suit that Kyu-Sik had pulled out and raised an eyebrow. "I don't think we'll be seeing that on the street any time soon though. One part of it, maybe, but not the entire thing." And if she did find someone who was wearing that on the street a few weeks from now, she was going to buy herself a Cinnabon to soothe her soul. 70s making a comeback or not, that era in fashion was not her thing. She would probably end up snagging ideas that she did like and borrowing the cut of an article of clothing while she remade it in fabrics and prints that she did like -- and possibly tailoring it to be more to her own aesthetics, though at that point, it might as well be something else entirely.

words | 330 | Kyu-Sik found some relief in knowing that the frills of the dress were indeed the conjuring of Rhiannon’s cousin rather than the girl herself. It wasn’t that it looked bad, but it was a lot to look at. He smiled at the idea of it looking like a metallic wedding cake, though he acknowledged the fact that cake just didn’t transfer over to dress design as well as one would imagine. Some pop stars had probably tried the look out as the next big thing, anyway. Who knew where that inspiration came from.
The second wave of relief came with the fact that no one would be seeing another orange plaid suit any time soon. One was enough for the world. He signed and hung it back on the bar with the other suits waiting for pick up. He halfway hoped that he’d be there the day that someone came to get it just so he could see what sort of personality the person brought the monstrosity in had. For now, though, it was just fun to imagine what it might have been. Rather than continue that line of thought, he decided just to accept her thanks once everything was put away. “Helping’s not a problem, by the way. It’s good practice for me, if anything.” After all, it wasn’t every day he got to help sew frills like that.
Helping had also helped get them out the door faster for dinner. After they both finished putting everything away, Kyu-Sik grabbed his bag and waited for her at the door. It didn’t take that long before they found themselves at the right shabu shabu restaurant. The young man may not have been much for going out to eat, but occasionally wasn’t so bad if someone else was paying. Plus, he would have been lying if he said that it wasn’t interesting to get to know her a bit better. Good food and good company made for a decent evening. |
