This event is a closed Event, made for Dani, Jess, Cathal and Duvet. Retrieve a sample of the creature's dark essence and stay alive. (they are in a another part of the world, not L.A.) The date is May 11th, the weather is clouded skies, humid, with the temperatures around 40°F. The time of day would be around 10pm on a Friday night, the sun is set and the moon and stars are out. In a remote canyon somewhere in the world there lies a large creature hidden from the world for years behind a large stone doorway. Today a small group will be sent to not only free this creature from it's cave, but they will also be there to gather some of it's corrupted essence.
A slight idea of what the creature might look like. (found on google search)

There were a lot of things Arcturus hated about some of her jobs. There were a million factors that could contribute to it, and honestly, this one was assured to be on the 'never again' list before she even arrived. The main issue, being, of course...her 'backup'.
She'd done her best to keep a straight, professional face, but between the redhead excited about a 'family trip' and the unnerving smirk of her crazier cousin, it wasn't as easy as it sounded. The parts before they had met up hadn't been bad – she'd sent out messages to the two of them telling them that something extremely important came up that she needed their backup on (and had casually mentioned demotion should they refuse to boot), gathered up an arsenal of whatever loose enchanted ammo she had left to pack into a case (she'd debated taking her grenade launcher for a test drive, but figured it was better left quit for now), several different guns, and remembering the less-than-combat-centered redhead favored archer managed to fish out a powerhouse compound bow with a scope attached to it (she was pretty sure her second cousin who was far too fond of hunting had given it to her for Christmas a couple years ago, and she had no use for it). Then it had been rent a truck, and have a decent rest before they set out.
She'd felt things go downhill as soon as she fished them out of their corners at HQ, ordering them to meet her at the parking deck in fifteen, which had been followed but...the less fun part had been the speech she'd had to give them before she would even let them get in the car, her hands on her hips and her expression hard – the same face she would wear to combat assessment days, which could easily be described as 'drill instructor'.
“You two listen to me, what we're about to do is probably extremely stupid and the information is highest clearance only, so don't wet yourselves with excitement too much when we get there. Whatever you see, you are not allowed to tell anyone – normally I wouldn't involve anyone in this, but I need some backup, and for that matter what we're going to do isn't something I can necessary shoot to conquer – and the only people who I can properly swear to silence would be you two, because if you say anything I will strip your names out of our family forever and dump you into the Bermuda triangle where they can't find you.”
When she was met with enthusiasm to the threat, she'd made sure to add 'not in the research facility either, so don't get fucking excited' before ordering them into the car. The drive there had made things decidedly worse, and by the time she pulled up to the arranged meeting spot about fifteen minutes drive away, she was attempting to figure out a subtle way to throw them into the ocean. Nevertheless, she put on a grim face and hopped out, undaunted by the dark back alley she'd pulled into, and made no explanation to the others why they were there, and instead moved to the bed of the rented truck, sorely missing her baby, but glad this was at least a bigger car than the last one.
“Pick your poison.” she called out to the other two, flipping the tarp off the bed and immediately pulling out the cases for two handguns and an assault rifle, pulling her assorted ammo box of leftover enchanted bullets, which was more than she expected, but still not a lot. She had a few of the ice ones left, a few air, and maybe a couple spirit at best...it'd have to do. She'd have to pick her shots. “My best guess is that weapons will be useless, but I can promise you they're still a good way to drive something back.” she added, rolling her eyes as she thought of her encounter with Chaos. Shadow was a bitch to fight.

Aw. Three Dias. Working together to actually achieve a goal—hell only knew what, Arcturus wouldn’t say—but it was beautiful. They were practically a normal family! Minus the gut wrenching, ball breaking contempt that seemed to layer every single word that left Arc’s mouth. Her tone certainly implied that Mirach would find herself rapidly deported—even if she were a U.S. citizen—if she ever brought up this glorious fairy tale story to anybody else at work. Ugh, what a sad day. She would have looked forward to watching Dominic writhe in pain at the thought that the Dia family had opted to do some interesting bonding today. Just the look on his face would have been priceless. Mirach crossed her arms behind her head and leaned back in the car seat as they drove, trying not to laugh to herself about it. Oh well. It’d have to be her best kept secret.
Since Arcturus had practically shut down all her hopes and dreams of being transferred to the amazing science unit over in the Bermuda Triangle, anyway. For the most part, Mirach sat out the ride in relative silence, having agreed to all the unwritten terms and conditions of this ‘family event’ they were obligated to attend. But nonetheless, she couldn’t help but feel a little excited and grinned to herself from time to time. A fair amount of her normal tools, including her mask, were left behind for this job. She suspected they weren’t needed here, though she hadn’t dared to leave behind a few necessary medical supplies. Mirach was too smart to believe a family event that involved her older cousin would be something nice and easy, without any potential soul crushing physical pain involved. She knew damn well how Arcturus ran her training drills, and this seemed much more serious.
Mirach was though, a little more hesitant to get out of the car though. She was busy absorbing details, trying to puzzle out their purpose without deliberately asking, but she gave up part way through. She’d find out soon enough, and was reasonably appeased when Arcturus offered weapons. Mirach herself stole at least two handguns, but she wasn’t entirely sure she would even bother to use them. The Faux Caduceus, as usual, was tucked away in her pocket, and she trusted its magic a lot more than she trusted the average, every day bullet. Nonetheless, Mirach didn’t bother to ask any questions about it; she tucked the weapons away after snapping on a few holsters for them and then turned to her cousins.
“Your best guess, cousin?” Mirach repeated, glancing toward Arc. She accepted any equipment that was tossed her way, but her eyes narrowed as she considered this new development. “You mean you don’t know? That’s not like you,” she muttered. It wasn’t meant as an insult, in fact, it wiped the smile from her face in half a second. As a last resort, she looked at Naos. He was younger than both of them. At the very least, she hoped Arcturus knew what she was doing. Mirach could handle herself well enough, but she wasn’t too sure about her younger cousin. All Dias were well trained but…it was still difficult to consider.

words | 612 | Familytripfamilytripfamilytripfamilytrip! Okay, Naos wasn't that overly excited, but he still found it difficult not to grin ear to ear from the moment he was contacted about the venture with his cousins. It helped that it was apparently something extremely important. He withheld any snarky comments about how Arcturus couldn't really demote a trainee, partially thinking that she would somehow find a way, and agreed to help. As he somehow managed to keep himself from bombarding her with questions immediately, he wasn't really sure what to do to prepare himself. He would bring his glasses and cellphone, of course. Those things were a given. Then the more he thought about it, the more he decided that if there was anything he really needed then he probably would've been asked ahead of time. Why worry?
The only other things the teenage boy found in his possession before they left were a pack of gum and the book he was reading to kill the time beforehand. He wasn't going to just leave it at headquarters, after all. The speech that he and Mirach were greeted with was… well, the boy didn't actually find it at all daunting. He smiled through it, nodded in understanding, and didn't really take the worst to heart. He hadn't been deported or striped of his name yet, and he could resist blabbing about whatever was going to happen easily enough. The only person he imagined telling was Ani, but this was a time where family took priority. He was smart enough to know when to follow the rules given to him.
On the short ride over he made only two attempts to play with the radio and then spent the last few minutes picking particularly funny quotes from his book to read aloud. Every now and then he did look out the window just to try and figure out where in the world they were going before they ended up in the dark alley. More questions were piling up, but he would hold most of them back for just a bit longer. He followed out of the car and looked up and down the alley for anything that may have seemed out of place.
"Wow, that doesn't sound reassuring at all," he laughed, still sounding more excited about the whole ordeal than worried. Though, admittedly, he was the slightest bit nervous when presented with weapons. He was just good at hiding it. Meeting his cousins in person came with an immediate confirmation of something he already knew. As brilliant as he may have been, physically he was the runt of the litter to a woefully obvious extent. Sure, he was really good at avoiding things and making shady maneuvers, but that was just about it. He was best placed in a lab and, much to his chagrin, that was all there was to it. However, Arcturus knew this about him. It didn't take much to figure out what he was and wasn't capable of, and he knew that she knew. He found some reassurance in the idea that she must have had some good reason to pull him along considering she was a strategist.
Refusing to let his brain slide his reassurance aside as wishful thinking, he didn't hesitate to take the composite bow that rested in the mix. That was something he could use at least. He looked it over to make sure everything was in order on it, but it seemed fine. "So, what exactly is this 'something' that might need driving back?" If it was anything like a swarm of bugs, he'd be okay. However, he got the hint that this was probably not quite like that. |

She managed to find a way to carefully load the bullets into several different slots of the ammo belts she had, save for the ice ones which went into one of the well-insulated pouches attached to her waist, and slung her rifle over her shoulder absently, eyes going to the other two as they picked over her small armory. Combat may not have been their specialty, nor did it sound like they were going into an assured combat situation, but there was no way she would let them go in bare-handed. The society leader narrowed her eyes a bit, and seemed uneasy at the questions of what they were facing. That was another thing that got her – they were going in, mostly blind, all three of them basically risking their hides all for Giovanni's hairbrained scheme. Her family may have driven her bananas, but that was a shit reason to die.
'Well, at least they don't have to run a risk of being corrupted themselves after all this business is said and done.' she thought grimly as she double-checked the hunting knife that was always sheathed at her back was still there.
“I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know. And I say weapons may be useless because 'my method of using bullets will make it even harder', or thats what I was told, but I'm not going in unarmed. It's just not natural...it's a nice comfort zone, if nothing else. Other people have teddy bears – I have my Glock” she exclaimed, giving a feral grin as she lifted said gun up to her face, pressing her lips to the side of the barrel is a sign of affection. She then holstered it at her thigh, and the second handgun she'd grabbed went to her hip, before she started to fish out the other base supplies that weren't weapons. She had to hop back to the cab of her truck to grab a few earpieces, coming back to toss them at both her cousins, as well as making sure hers was synched up, before heading around the truck, ensuring it was locked before she moved past it.
She headed a few feet into the darkness of the alley before she caught sight of the bright white standing out in it, telling her which direction to walk in, and as she came to a stop near the man she placed her hands on her hips, one eyebrow raised. “I hope this won't fry our electronics.” she said by way of greeting, and held out one of the earpieces for him to take as well, as well as proving her point that they needed their technology intact. She waited for a few moments until her two...companions followed her around, and she stepped aside so that she could play introduction buffer. “Family, Lupus, Lupus-” she paused, and pointed to the other dark-skinned female that accompanied her “Mirach” then the redhead “and Naos. Both swore to silence or horrible, horrible death before I even let them in the car.”

Lupus had waited patiently for Arc and her team, only at the meeting place a good thirty minutes before them. He watched as Arc parked and ordered her cousins to take a weapon or two. Just at the moment Lupus had realized that he had not explained much about what the group would be doing, or even going for that matter. To say that he just forgot would be wrong, he knew what he did but also knew the IS was very good at adapting. He stood a good distance in the alleyway, far enough in that if anyone walked by they probably would pay attention to a few adults in a alley, at least not without reason. He wore a long black robe, something fitting of what a person might have wore in the time of the old kingdoms. Edges were lined in white and flowed into runes symbols that could possibly say anything.
His hair was left to fall freely across his shoulders, the white of his hair matched the white runes on his robes. He tipped his head as Arc got close, she came with a good question but one that had an easy answer. ”Greetings miss Dia, any electronics should work just fine.” His attention was then turned on the Arc’s two cousins, so two Dia’s? Interesting enough Lupus had guess that Arc would have brought at least one family member along. He placed his hand closed fist to his chest and then bent his waist in a bow. ”A pleasure to meet you both, as miss Dia has stated my name is Lupus. I shall do my best to remember your names, Mirach and Naos.” A smirk appeared on his face as he remember long ago a IS member that went by one of those names. The man was a poor excuse for a human, very rude and had a temper. ”Once long ago there was another Dia that went by the Naos name, if I remember correctly he did try to kill me once.”
He waved his hand as if to dismiss the comment and place his focus on Arc. ”I would assume that your group is ready? We will be traveling in a quiet interesting way, I will create a portal that will offer safe passage between here and our target. Is there any questions before we leave?” Just tend he remember the earpiece that arc had handed him, if anything with this he could just feed them information as they went, saved from spending an hour on lessons.

“Ah. Well cousin, if you and your amante, Señor Glock, would like a moment of privacy to consummate your relationship, by all means. Take it. I’d hate to stand in the way of true love,” Mirach said, disregarding her newly risen concerns. She often derailed her own anxiety by pretending it didn’t exist, and the best way to do that was to continue the charade that they were one big hateful happy family. Whether or not the others picked up on it didn’t matter to her. She’d never been able to play well with the other kids growing up, partially because she cared not about what they thought of her, and also because she cared so little about them that she often said whatever was on her mind. It was fun, but for some reason, nobody liked her much. Regardless, Mirach had either accepted or taken everything she needed from the truck and Arcturus, and she was instantly drawn to follow her cousin into the alley moments later, without hesitation. She felt quite at home, in fact, and smiled to herself about it quietly. She just hoped this new family time wouldn’t actually be a serious waste. She was looking forward to it, even if it might have been hard to tell.
And really, it was turning out to be quite interesting. They met Lupus—a short and straight to the point greeting—and Mirach cocked her head slightly at his wardrobe decisions and long white hair. In some ways, he was sort of…delicate looking, and as usual, that held her attention. To top it off, Lupus might as well have stepped out of a high fantasy novel with the way he was dressed, and her eyes were already crawling over each of the runes decorating his robe, attempting to work out what modern languages they might be tied to. She was no expert, but Mirach sometimes found cultural information fascinating and relevant in some of her experiments. She couldn’t say she recognized anything about this white haired, serene faced man, but she did smirk after the initial hellos were through. He kind of reminded her of somebody. Only, Lupus had a touch more of flare in him; she had seen that smirk on his face when he referred to Naos, though she marveled over how or why Arcturus would come to such a person as this before their supposedly all-important mission. He must have been significant somehow. And then, of course, he said the magic word: portals.
He could make portals.
Her smirk grew, but her eyes narrowed. “Interesting. A man that can make portals, free from the Society. Cousin, I confess I’m a little confused, but I’ll not breathe a word of it, as promised. Just one question, Lupus, was it? Could you look that way?” Mirach pointed to the right, her eyes flashing. Since she doubted they would be taking him home with them, this was the best alternative. She had every intention of reaching for a knife of a pair of scissors if he did—meant for surgery and medical purposes—in the small bag she brought with her.
After all, he could make portals. There was no way she was walking away without something of his, preferably some piece of DNA, she could put under a microscope and study. If that meant she had to cut off a few locks of hair, then so be it.

words | 444 | What a lovely romance brewing. Naos laughed again, and shrugged then. That would just have to be good enough for now. The lack of information in what he was being told made him even more wary of the journey. No question he had was really getting answered other than the confirmation of the level of uncertainty. It wouldn't stop him from smiling or following his cousins into the unknown, but it was going to keep him on his toes. Which was probably a good thing for him in the long run. Naos caught the earpiece and fitted it into his ear as he walked into the alley right after Mirach. Hesitation wasn't going to get him anywhere.
Then came the very unexpected introduction of the strange white-haired fourth wheel. As he did with most interesting people put before him for the first time, he was taking visual notes. The teenager found himself tilting his head slightly and staring. Lupus. He had watched enough House to want to make a medical joke, but that didn't really seem appropriate. It was Latin, even if the man didn't strike him as much of a wolf either. Though appearances could be deceiving. He had no personal contempt towards the humans that had elemental or unordinary powers. However, it did absolutely nothing to help him understand who the person was or how he played a part in whatever vague mission they were going on.
The person must have been known to at least some of the society if he knew another Dia by his name in the past. Naos took apart the man's statement in a few ways that he probably shouldn't have. Sure, it did help him in determining that Lupus must've been at least a bit older than he appeared. How much older was indeterminable until he could figure out how long 'long ago' was, but that helped. However, what he focused on in the rest of that statement was the other Naos 'tried', and only tried once. He let out a small snort of a laugh, but didn't comment on it for now. He could ask for stories later. Right now they had a more important matter on hand.
Forever amused by his cousin Mirach, Naos motioned to the right as well and nodded. He wanted to see where this was going before they hopped into whatever mysterious portal the man could make, though he wasn't quite sure if Lupus would actually look. "And while you're looking that way, I think that at least some sort of goal would be nice to have. Or is this a jump and then make a plan kind of thing?" |

“Oh boy here we go.” she muttered, side-eyeing Lupus in a manner that silently told him 'you asked for everything you are about to receive'. You did not ask those two if they had questions after mentioning portals. She was trusting them to stay quiet in this, because Lupus was another high-clearance secret the society held. And the fact they even got to look at him was more than over ninty-five percent of their peers could say. Too bad they could never share, or Arcturus would gladly relieve them of one of their limbs, before kicking them out.
She was met with, more or less, what she expected, at which she sighed and shook her head, dark eyes sliding to settle on Mirach with her eyebrows raised, waiting to see if she tried to capture Lupus under a butterfly net. Well, not quite, but she could tell whatever she did plan wasn't a good idea, and without a second of hesitation she reached out and firmly gripped the other woman's wrist, holding her hand down in case she did make a move towards the man in front of them. “'Out of the society’s control' is more like outside of your privilege of information. Perhaps it's not control, but where the hell do you think I'm getting my bullets made? I can't just shit them out.” 'Though it would be nice' she added to herself, snorting a bit. Though, considering Mirach now knew he could make portals...what did she expect, them to keep him in a cell? Oh yeah that would work.
“You're both just in way over your heads because I have no other options. You'd be surprised how much you don't know and won't ever.” she added, looking at both of them in turn, hand still holding Mirach's arm from any suspicious movement, which she planned to keep there until they went through the portal. Her gaze went back to settle on Lupus, expression turning sober, but she didn't say a word, waiting to see instead if he would answer her younger cousin's question, or if he would simply open the portal for them. No matter how this was done, information or no, she could adapt – she wasn't considered a major tactical unit for nothing.
Plus, there was little she could say to him at this point – 'I know I'm doing something stupid but I'm trying to save my people from getting wiped out'? Or maybe 'Hey yeah sorry but I may go crazy from corruption and there goes the only society leader who's stopping Giovanni from taking apart the city including you oops'? Both very convincing things, definitely. She still felt like she was on the fence about this – normally she had enough balls to make up both the other leaders, but she knew the high chance of this ending in disaster...and so did they, the assholes, pinning this on her.

Lupus was unsure of what Mirach was up to, but when the young Naos jumped in as well he decided that they were surely up to something. It was only farther noticeable when rc moved in to keep Mirach’s hands at bay. Lupus held a small pouch that hung over his shoulder, inside had a few interesting items, but the main one was his information book. Lupus had been tempted to pull it out, to get an idea of what Mirach and Naos intentions really were. Yet something told him that he relying just a little too much on his book and needed to lean more on reading the people in front of him.
”The Dia name is surely an interesting bunch, I will admit that I may not be under the level of what you would determine control to be, but I do my best to be of help to the society.” He decided now was a good time to get the portal ready before they spent the rest of the day playing Q&A. He took a few steps away from the group to give himself the space needed to work. He looked into his back and pulled out a piece of paper, read what information he had on it then returned it to his bag. With location in mind lupus faced the nearest wall, said a few words in an unknown language and then placed his hand on the wall.
An oval shape of runes appeared on the wall and glowed a deep purple before the wall shimmered and created a portal. The other side could be seen quite easily, a large open space, a few rocks here and there, it was the inside of a canyon. He then looked at Naos to quickly answer his question. ”The method will be up to your leader, but you are here to gather something very important.” With that he smiled and lead the group through the portal. The transfer was easy enough, all you had to do was walk in and you would find yourself on the other side. Once on the other side Lupus turned to Arc and asked her a question that he already knew the answer to. ”Are you sure about this? Once the beast is free you will have to gather what you need and then guide it back to its prison, killing it will not be an option.” In fact Lupus was sure there was no human that could kill it, this creature lived passed the great war with little trouble but a sealing.

Aaaaand Arcturus stepped in, snatching her wrist before Mirach could fish a pair of scissors out of her equipment bag. Typical. Certainly wasn’t the first time someone intervened on another person’s behalf. Sadly, she wanted a few strands of hair—scant DNA for some tests—but apparently even that wasn’t allowed. Mirach offered her cousin little more than a heavy lidded, bored, side glance, and no words. It all sounded familiar, and for Mirach, dull. Oh, she had heard all about Arcturus’ fancy schmancy bullets and their powerful magical properties, and Mirach had always known they had to come from somewhere—or someone outside the norm—which made them a bitch to fashion up, even with modern technology. But c’mon. Teleporting man. Standing right in front of them, untouched. It was incomprehensible to Mirach that the Society would not have some type of neutralizing weapon or chemical agent to restrain him for future study, and given that, she already imagined how beneficial said research would be. Her gaze slid from her cousin and back to the man in question. He’d been spared a preemptive haircut, at least.
“Yes, yes, fair enough, cousin. For the sake of family, I’ll leave him be,” Mirach said. For now, anyway. It was difficult to pry the thought from her mind, now that it was firmly planted there, but she supposed, in his own way, Lupus was at least proving to be an asset. What with his summoning portals at the beck and call of the Society—or Arcturus. Either way. Mirach tugged her wrist out of Arcturus’ hold, still wearing a wary expression, but nonetheless, mellowed. Her eyes flashed as Lupus worked his magic. Mirach wasn’t stupid, and was by no means, prepared to betray family trust right now. Even that cold, callous bastard of a father she loved so much had taught her the value, and threat, of blood ties, and as Mirach rubbed her wrist thoughtfully, she resisted a snort. No. She would not challenge her cousin on this. That would be asinine right now. Besides—the canyon reflected back in that portal window had her full attention.
She stepped through with the others of course, peering cautiously back down the alleyway before disappearing after them, the watery, cool sensation of the doorway washing over her skin and leaving a faint, numbing sensation on her skin. It was only temporary, lasting maybe a full minute, but after stepping through, Mirach flexed her tingling fingers, glancing down at her hands before taking in the rest of the serene landscape. The smell of sweet grass, old rock and dry earth permeated the air, giving the canyon a distinct, dusty taste that was both full of life and devoid of any presence at the same time. As the initial discomfort wore off, her gaze snapped to Lupus again, drawn by the word, ‘beast’.
“Oh, I do love those details of yours, sir. They’re so helpful. What kind of beast are we talking about? And just where the hell is it?” She glanced at Arcturus again, attempting to gauge whether or not her cousin had any more details hidden away as well. From the sound of things, however, it was almost as if Lupus was relaying this information for the first time.

words | 532 | There was some disappointment in not being able to see Mirach's plan come to fruition, but he was a little more off put by Arcturus's words that followed. Despite his consistently pleasant demeanor, there were a few things that actually did bother Naos. One of the big things on that list was also one of the reasons he accepted his place in the society when he was finally told about it. He didn't like not knowing things. He didn't know everything and he knew that he never would. That didn't mean he couldn't try to collect as much information as a capable individual could before he met his end. Being in the Impedio Society allotted him more opportunity to learn things about the world that the average civilian wouldn't even begin to fathom. Unfortunately, as he was currently at the bottom of the totem pole, he understood that there were a lot things that he just wasn't given access to yet. And possibly never, yes.
Still, he met his cousin's explanation of their situation with a thoughtful 'mhmm', taking the idea as an unspoken and vague challenge. He was already taking the mental notes he could on what she was allowing them in on now. However, he was trying to be on his better behavior in front of her, so he kept his mouth shut. His eyes had drifted again to Lupus, watching him as he created the portal with some fascination over the method. That was an impressive and useful skill. He had met some elemental humans just a bit over a week ago, but it wasn't everyday that one got to meet someone more like a real life wizard.
With only the hesitation of double-checking to make sure he had everything that he needed, Naos followed the others through the portal. Then he began to immediately look over the new area from their position. The answer that Lupus gave his question wasn't all that he had hoped, but it was finally something that he could build on. They were there to gather something. Based on what else was said, there was an imprisoned beast that couldn't be killed and they had to take something from it. This was good on the note that at least he wasn't going to be expected to actually kill anything. He just had to make sure he stayed alive to help gather whatever it was Arcturus needed? Hopefully?
"It must be a dangerous beast if it has its own prison," he commented. It was still a mystery to him, but he knew that you didn't lock something away for no reason. And if killing it wasn't an option, then he assumed that what they were discussing was going to be one tough customer. "Physical details are secondary to that, because I'm guessing that it's not going to be very nice whether it's big or small. What I want to know is what are we gathering?" What the creature looked like was critical, but he doubted that information was available to them at the moment. However, knowing what they were after would at least help him make a guess as to the creature's nature or structure. |

She stepped through the portal warily, not terribly trusting of it, and as soon as she was fully on the other side took a few quick steps away, as if the thing might swallow her up. It was an instinct – you didn't spend your life fighting against creatures and people flinging a million different unnatural abilities at you without becoming a little jumping about...'using' them yourself. Nevertheless her expression remained set, even when Lupus again asked her if she wanted to do this...if anything, her expression hardened more. “I ain't leavin my weapons behind pretty boy, never said I would try to kill it but it makes me feel better to have 'em. Plus you can guide things pretty well if they're pissed and want to eat you.” 'Which I'm sure you'll give me the disapproving mom frown if I do, too bad so sad.'
She ignored the 'are you sure you want to do this' aspect pointedly, because no she didn't want to. It was a matter of she didn't have a choice. Not if she wanted to minimize casualties and make sure her people weren't ruthlessly hunted for an attempt on an angel's life...attempt being the key word, because Giovanni and whatever team he took would die horribly without her backup. It was an incredible long shot even with her backing them up with corrupted bullets, but...at least it made the probability somewhere around 10% instead of 0%. Arcturus was nothing if not a realist – she wasn't stupid, she knew the chances of success were low, and the chances of her death high, but that was what she signed up for, wasn't it – when she joined the marines, when she finally gave in to her duty to the society...and the fact of the matter was, she didn't half-ass things. It was all or nothing.
None of her thoughts showed for even a second on her face though, it was just the same hard, determined expression. “I have a feeling you'd be the worst person ever to attempt to get a sitrep from.” she added to Lupus bluntly, tone exasperated. Sometimes she felt like she'd have to strap him to a chair and interrogate him just to get any clear answers.
LUPUS I basically just put up what I had I'm sorry there's not a bunch to respond to.

The Dia family was as he remembered, full of sarcasm and willingness to get the job done, regardless of the details. Lupus found himself comparing the young Naos with the Noas of his past. Very different, and yet Lupus couldn't shake this feeling that he should keep an eye on the young man, better to be safe then sorry. While a few questions were being directed at him, Lupus took the opportunity to survey his surroundings. Yes they were at the right time and place, now all he had to do was release Humus and then let the Dia’s take care of the rest. Lupus had agreed to answer Arc’s questions, show her what she needed, but he did not agree to physically help in any way.
”For a long time he has just been called Humus Movendis, commonly known as the moving earth. Humus is a fairly passive creature, but due to a past event the great beast was corrupted. This corruption is what you are here to collect.” Lupus left it at that as he took a few steps away from the group, before he continued it was a good idea if he showed them what they were to deal with. He pulled out a small flask of water and began to pour it on the ground, then bent down and placed his finger in the soften ground, whispered a few ancient words and then stood back. The weakened soil started to shift, the soft earth moved away from Lupus and headed for the opposite side of the canyon. Once the soil reached the fall wall the mud like substance crawled up the canyon wall and created a large rune.
The ground began to shake, small rocks falling from the cliffs above them as a opening cracked along the wall and then slowly opened. Inside the newly made hole was nothing but darkness, but Lupus know that what they came for was inside and fully awake. ”To continue, once a passive creature, Humus used to protect a small village upon his back, longer than he is wide, Humus is powerful but never used to turn its power upon humans until it faced a corrupted creature. It bested this creature, but not without becoming infected.” Just then the ground started to shake once more as the creature in question finally took a few steps out of it’s prison.
”You can not see it from here, but the site of infection is at the base of his neck, think of the body of a dog, or horse, right where the body and next meet.” Lupus directed his attention towns Arc for his next statement. ”He may not react at first, but once you, or your cousins begin the climb, he will not react kindly.” Still, the only why they would get what they wanted is if someone climbed up there and collected the corruption that has been festering at the base of this beast neck for countless years.
At least Humus moved slow, taking each step with minutes in between. The base, his hoof like feet and long legs were covered in a hard rock, meaning climbing should be fairly easy. At least easy for anyone that knew something about rock climbing. The rest of his body was covered in moss, grass and soil. His back had everything from lush trees, to runes of what was leave of the village he once protected. Although it was hard to see, the closer a person’s eyes wandered towards the neck the easier it was to notice the dead or dying trees, and the brown rotting grass.

Wait wait wait. Hold the god damn phone for two seconds.
Mirach had been paying attention well enough—she rolled her eyes at Lupus’ fancy little magic trick and kept her mouth shut as he attempted to explain this creature’s origins and tragic life story blah, blah, blah who gave a shit—all the while pondering her chance of snatching a knife or a pair of scissors from her bag and trying to slice some hair off of him while his back was turned and her cousin was preoccupied. But then she saw that massive thing lumbering slowly across the canyon and peeking out of its former home, each quaking step spanning hundreds upon hundreds of feet. And suddenly Lupus and his fancy smancy hair did not matter one bit. Mirach was too busy reconsidering this mission. If she understood Lupus correctly, they were supposed to climb that ancient behemoth, scale all the way up its body like squirrels marching up a tree, settle right down at the crook in its neck, and naturally drain it of some type of nasty corrupted substance before it could crush them all to death or infect them with its own sickness.
Golly-gee, geeze jeepers whiz, batman! That sounded like a ridiculous amount of fun.
Mirach’s eyes narrowed as she stared into the distance, swinging her satchel over her shoulder and crossing her arms over her chest. She smirked. “Oh baby, where do I sign up,” she joked, her eyes flashing mischievously. “I take back what I said, sir. You do have a way with words. Someone, anyone, please tell me I’ll be the one climbing up there—or at least promise me that whomever does go, they bring me back free samples.” Mirach glanced covertly toward her older cousin—as she was almost certain Arcturus would step in and keep her from doing just that. It seemed like a very Arcturus thing to do, given that Mirach was the one that wanted to do it. If Mirach had to guess, she and Naos were really here solely for backup—or maybe even, a distraction. A thoughtful glint entered her eye. There were problems with such an assumption though.
“As eager as I am though, I think you’ve forgotten something. How exactly, do we plan on covering so much terrain at once? We can’t exactly outrun his giant ass, now can we? You’re out of your damn mind, sir, if you think that thing won’t squish us flat while we’re running around, trying to keep it occupied; that is, unless we’ve got a way to move fast—consistently.”

words | 336 | When finally given all of the information that they had been asking for, Naos took a moment to run exactly what was said a few times over in his head. This terrible beast they had vaguely been discussing hadn't always been so terrible. They were here to collect corruption. Any uneasiness that he should've been feeling in this was being ignored for the contemplation of what something like that was needed for. His eyes followed the ground that moved after Lupus's spell, hardly allowing himself to even blink.
Despite the worst case scenarios playing in his head, an interested smile still curled on Naos's lips. Humus Movendis was what Lupus called it. The name was so literal from its Latin form that he wondered whether or not this played into any untold abilities that the creature might unfortunately have. It was large, so perhaps its steps were ground shaking? Either that or perhaps it was once an Earth element prior to its corruption. That theory wasn't improbable in the current setting. His first inclination was to pull out his glasses even though he wasn't quite in a close enough range for them to work. Who knew when he'd have an opportunity to put them on later if they had to go catch up to it.
And climb up it.
Naos liked to think he was good at climbing. He was in most contexts, but he had never tried to climb up anything that was actually moving or anything that would likely try to attack. Mirach brought up the good point of how they were even expected to quickly cover so much ground. "We could pop back and get the truck," he joked with a chuckle. They could've also tried baiting it in a particular direction, but that would probably be dangerous and difficult. The boy rocked a bit restlessly on his feet when he finally saw the creature. He was getting ready to move at a moment's notice, but he'd leave the planning to his more experienced cousins. |

Arcturus, honestly, wasn't sure what she'd been expecting. In hindsight, 'walking mountain' should have been on the list, but, well, she was trying to be optimistic. The thought only occurred after the first tremor shuddered the ground, and it had taken all her willpower not to groan when it did. Nonetheless, she listened to Lupus finish his little tale, not missing the little detail of you're gonna piss it off once you start poking about. Well then. She watched as the massive creature lumbered in the background, her brain naturally falling back on wit when her mind was too busy running through everything. “Have I mentioned I'm not particularly good at rock climbing?” Her tone flowed sarcastic, but it didn't match well to her raised eyebrows and thin-lipped frown, which was clearly an expression that broadcasted 'well, shit'.
She only distantly heard her cousin's comments about this, brain working too fast with all the possible scenarios, good and bad, running through her mind. She was unsure how wise it was for more than one of them to try and make the climb, but at the same time, if it wouldn't take kindly to them...distractions were a key. One on the ground, two going up. Two going up meant one for distractions while the other did what had to be done, and whoever stayed ground-side could fire a few shots at it to also distract it. One on the ground was for insurance, as well – should the worst happen, they needed someone to report back, and Lupus going to tell Giovanni 'oh hey one of your other leaders is dead' would have ended terribly.
“Naos, feet on the ground, find a perch so he can't step on you, keep your eyes open, and don't think you have the easy job, either, we may need a distraction. There and there-” she paused and pointed to two different jutting rock formations that looked like they didn't have too steep of a path up to them “may be good places to stay. Mirach, I hope you got some upper body strength because you're comin' up with me.” She holstered her handgun as she spoke, and switched it out for her hunting knife, flipping it idly in her hand, before holding it reversed so she could climb with it in hand. “Pretty boy, you gonna tell me what's gonna happen when it decides it don't like us anymore, or is it a surprise?” she asked, rounding on Lupus for a moment with eyes narrowed, sizing him up.

Mirach had asked a good question one that Lupus could answer, although he had been willing to watch the group try to run across the great distance. He wasn't really a mean guy, but there were just something that he did out of the fact that there could be some humor behind it. Sadly he would not get to see Arc run across the field, since Mirach mentioned it Lupus could not leave his answer for later. He did however wait for Arc to pick out who was doing what, causing Lupus to be a little surprised that Arc was not going up alone. He listened to Arc’s plan and thought that if anything there was a better chance of at least one getting to their destination. He reached into his bag and pulled out a glass jar, the lid had a rune on it, made to keep whatever inside trapped. This jar would be what Arc was meant to place the corruption in.
The reason they had to go so high was because the point of infection would have the purest corruption, and for what Arc needed it for, she could only use the best. ”First of all use this jar to collect the sample you’ll need, its spelled to hold the corruption long enough for you to do what you need to do. Also, you’ll need to cut open the creature at the infection zone, the blood is what you want. I do hope you brought some sort of blade with you.” He took his eyes away from Arc to pull his book of tricks out and studied a few lines before closing it and returning the book to his bag.
He chose to ignore Arc for the moment as he took a stick and drew a few runes into the ground, said a few words and waited. Unlike summoning, what he was doing was requesting a certain creature to come to them. These creature were smart and had the will to reject the call, so all Lupus could really do was hope that they would answer. In the mean time a short explanation may be in order.
”Well to be honest I have never angered Humus by trying to climb on his back while he is infected with corruption, but if I had to make a guess, I would say something to do with vines might be something to look out for, maybe shifting stone, but to be honest a lot of what he can do is a mystery to even myself.” Although there were stories, but why should Lupus worry them with info that could be a lie, just a story made to scare away visitors.
”I have however called us a ride, something that will help cover the distance. Although, they may not of heard me.” How foolish would he look if they did not show? He was pretty sure he had called them right, these things were smart, ruled by a leader that was directly connected to the rune spell. So if they really did not want to respond then it would have been by her choice. Lupus took a few steps from the group, one to get a better look down the canyon and two so that he could quietly think to himself about what else he could do to help.
Thankfully Lupus would not have to come up with a plan B, since the sound of running reached his ears. In the distance could be seen a small group of deer, the only thing was that these were not normal deer. They were native this this area, wherever it may be. There were four of these deer, three as large as a basic horse, the last being taller than the rest. They all had antlers, although each one was slightly bigger or smaller than the others and affected by their age. The three similar deer all had smoky grey hides, while the large one was more white. They took to standing before the group of humans, the largest eying everyone as it sized them up.
Before Lupus could explain the white deer spoke, with a tone that showed how un-amused it truly was. “You call for us, and the great one is free from his sleep and in pain, why have you done this. I, Isuth will listen long enough to pass judgement.” A female voice? how odd, last Lupus remember the only white deer he had met had been a male, could this be his offspring? Either was he took little time explaining, telling the deer that they needed help and that they were not there to harm Humus, but to just collect the corruption in hopes of studying it. He then lied, something he only did when he had to, but he told them that studying the corruption may lead to then finding a cure for it.
This was enough to convince their leader to lend a hoof, but only under a strict rule. “We will aid you, but if the great one becomes too stressed or begins to endanger the forest beyond the cliffs, we will take action, even if you are my father’s favorite human.” Lupus couldn't only nod, knowing that he was really abusing his friendship with their kind ruler. ”Very well then, let us get on with introductions and then we can carry on with the task ahead. The small one needs to take a place upon the cliffs, while the other two will need help getting to Humus and climbing him.” The white deer nodded and picked which of her followers would help who.
“Tela will help the boy, Errian will help the shorter of the females, and that will leave Filyon with the remaining. I will stay here and watch Lupus, as my father would have done.” Lupus was not sure sure if it was a good or bad thing that he got Isuth watching over him. Either way everything was settled now and Lupus could leave the rest to Arc and her family.
(Below I will list each deer’s personality, gender and defining markings. You may rp your deer within your post if you like.)
Naos = Tela -Brave, Bold - Female - short black line above her nose Mirach = Erran - Rash, Sassy - Male - red triangle under his left eye Arc = Filyon - Mild, Serious - Male - white spots along his back

Wow. Really?
Mirach blinked; she hadn’t expected she would be scaling up there, honestly, and by no fault of her own. Rather, she assumed Arcturus would ban her from attempting that very idea, but apparently not. Well, Mirach recovered from the shock of her cousin’s decision quickly enough, smirking. Orders were orders after all, and she was more than willing to obey. Her eyes flashed. “As you wish,” she said, offering up a half hearted, but well meaning shrug. She had no doubts about her climbing capabilities, regardless of how rowdy that behemoth became—what was a ride without a few bumps along the way? Jokes aside, she was more than confident in her ability to improvise and adapt to a situation. She’d been doing it her entire life.
However, Mirach was more than amused with the creatures that sprinted up to meet them, summoned by Lupus’ girly scribbles in the dirt. These deer were his idea of a ferry across the great divide that separated their group from the titan lumbering across the plains. And they talked. Mirach didn’t balk at the thought—in her experience, Fate monsters could be quite mouthy actually—but she had never met a relatively peaceful sentient creature before. Well. Barring Lupus. He didn’t really count as human. Did he? She rolled her shoulders. The DNA tests would have to decide that one, if she ever managed to get a clip of his hair or a piece of his hide. She listened to the conversation carefully, but was unable to hide a grin as her own unusual steed—Erran, the other animal had called him—stepped forward, his proud head lifting, a wicked glint in his eye. Erran scuffed one of his hooves against the ground below and snorted loudly, huffing and puffing as his cloud-gray eyes swept over his new rider. Mirach could tell, he was not amused. His ears flicked and his nostrils flared. She smirked, giving him his own once-over.
“Erran, huh?” Mirach said, stepping forward. She couldn’t resist when her gaze fell on his antlers. “Nice rack.”
The deer tossed his head, the gray fur along his back bristling. The red patch of fur under his eye—a triangle—seemed to add a tad more character to the dark humor dancing in his gaze. “Jealous, human?” he barked, the retort making her laugh. “You can ogle later. We have places to go; mount already.”
Mirach grinned. They were going to get along fabulously. “On a first date? Easy, big boy. You’re moving a little fast for me.”
“Well I certainly won’t wait for you,” he quipped. Erran dropped his head as she finally walked up to his side, more or less making it easier as she wrangled herself up onto his back. It wasn’t unlike riding a horse really, but Mirach was wary of the lack of reins—she buried her fingers in fur at the base of his neck. “Watch your hands,” he added, but it sounded more or less, like his idea of a joke. He huffed and glanced over to the other deer and their respective riders, clearly impatient to get going. Mirach meanwhile, checked her pack; she'd have to keep it over her shoulder while climbing or let Erran take it for her until she could come back down for it. She was still debating.

words | 545 | Feet on the ground? He didn't hesitate to give her a salute. The orders were acknowledged and would be done. However, Naos wasn't sure whether to find it relieving or not. On one hand, it was nice knowing that he wouldn't have to attempt scaling the moving beast himself. He knew that he likely didn't have the strength to accomplish something like that very easily, if at all. Though on the other hand, he would have to think of ways to make himself a distraction if worse came to worse. He was the smallest of them and not particularly threatening, so this would take some creative efforts on his part. Creative was something that he could do. He had a bow and a mission. That would have to be good enough.
Now it was just a matter of when he needed to secure his position. He listened carefully, ready to move, but still taking in the conversation that was being had. How they would actually be catching up to the beast in question was answered in a way he didn't really see coming. They were deer the size of horses, nothing like he had seen before, but quite like something he would've read in a fantasy book. He supposed that fit their situation well. Although Lupus wasn't physically doing much, he continued to prove himself as an extraordinarily useful member of their party. At least that was what he would continue to believe so long as the animals agreeing to help were as useful as they seemed.
Naos greeted the deer assigned to him by trailing around her first. He was lucky that she seemed patient enough to put up with this brief evaluation, though he could tell she was watching him without the slightest bit of anxiety. He then scoped out her hooves to try and figure out her capabilities before even just asking. Though, in the end, he decided he may as well just ask. It didn't actually strike him as odd to be talking to a magic deer for a multitude of reasons, and their task was going to require a lot of trust between them. "First, my name is Naos. Nice to meet you!" He pointed to himself first, and then to her legs. "Second, I know that certain species of deer, like the musk deer, can climb steep elevations well. But many of them are built considerably shorter and wider, and thus have more stability while climbing. How well can you climb?"
"I will climb as well as I need to when the time comes. It won't be a problem." There was no doubt in her tone. He found the answer not quite as detailed as he would've liked, but he still gave her a cheerful smile and nodded. She spoke with a certainty that he wouldn't question, taking an appreciation of her boldness. What was better than a confident lady?
"Alright, that works for me," he agreed. As she lowered herself to let him climb on, the only regret was that he couldn't have had the foresight to bring his cowboy hat and badge from the masquerade party earlier that month. "I've never ridden anything before, so let me know if I'm doing anything wrong. I'm a quick learner!" |
