words | 308 | Kyu-Sik had always been the sort of boy who ate anything that someone gave him. It was the polite thing to do, and any chance of being picky had been pulled out of him when he was a young child by only one soft scolding from his mother. Food was food, and he always figured that if it was going to kill him then people wouldn't be trying to feed it to him. Having eaten even silkworm larvae and chicken feet before, he liked to think that he had a rather strong stomach and wasn't turned away when something potentially bizarre to others crossed his path. However, he was now feeling the slightest pinch of doubt and regret in that.
The young man sat in the passenger seat of his own car, leaning over on the door. The sickness had hit him much too suddenly. It wasn't totally unfamiliar, but he had only gotten food poisoning once before and it was much too long ago for him to have ever seen it coming. His arm was crossed over his stomach, the other hand pressed against his mouth for a moment to settle himself down. All he had to do was make it home, then he'd be fine. He'd have to be fine. But oh how his stomach was churning. No more picnics for places he didn't even work for.
Thankfully for him, Donovan had agreed to drive home. While he was uncertain about letting someone who was still little more than an acquaintance drive his vehicle such a distance, he figured it wouldn't be too bad as long as they didn't get lost. Kyu-Sik had given over the keys and was now waiting for the car to actually be started. He glanced over to Donovan once before leaning forward to at least set the GPS while he waited. |

So he couldn't quite prove whether it was his pasta salad, Mi-Ho's fried mystery treat, or Louisa's probably pigeon and/or raccoon stew that had done Kyu-Sik in. He was willing to bet on the latter, thankful he'd passed on it himself. Donovan winced a bit in sympathy as the other man requested that he be the one to drive them back, and he was certain that Kyu-Sik couldn't really hear him admit that he didn't know how to drive over the sound of his violent retching into the bushes. But there didn't seem to be any other solution and no reason to trouble the man more by repeating it.
Donovan had always wanted a chance to learn how to drive, anyway, a bit eager behind the wheel despite not quite knowing how to start the car. Might as well his first experience be during a time that somebody was actually counting on him as motivation for not messing it up too badly. Emphasis on too badly, because factoring in the mountains and Donovan couldn't be too optimistic about this going flawlessly. But if he managed to get them back in one piece, that's all that mattered... and if they drove off the cliff in flames then it really wouldn't matter for too long.
Nothing to worry about at all.
Catching Kyu-Sik glancing at him, expectantly, Donovan gave a cheerfully wide grin that he hoped looked reassuring and attempted to turn the key to start the ignition. It was the only hole that the key fit into, so he was certain he was on the right path. The car revved awkwardly a few times before Donovan had to finally admit defeat. "I'm not quite sure what I'm doing."

words | 340 | A few mis-timed revs later and Kyu-Sik just stared at his current driver with some bafflement. For the moment, he was trying to ignore the vicious combination of unknown foods fighting in his stomach, and he was trying to understand what in the world Donovan was doing. It only occurred to him in that moment that perhaps Donovan wasn't actually capable of driving. He had said something, hadn't he? Kyu-Sik had missed it, but the sudden pessimism setting in left him to assume the worst before he considered the other possibilities. He had, after all, needed a ride to a picnic because of a stolen bicycle. It was not unheard of for someone living in the city to be lacking a driver's license.
The car was a simple Kia Rio in a completely ordinary navy blue. Kias were affordable, easy to maintain, and Kyu-Sik had always thought the car was easy to drive. There were no fancy bells and whistles, and certainly no magic tricks when it came to just getting the car started. A frowned formed on his face as he wondered if perhaps Donovan was just not familiar with the make. Or perhaps the other male was just used to driving a much different car?
In the end, all thoughts led back to him doubting Donovan's capabilities. He frowned and just shook his head. "It's an automatic. You just turn the key like any other car…" Rather than wait for the other to try, he leaned over, turned the key, and started the car himself. Now they just had to back out of the space. "Here," Kyu-Sik was already making the assumption that it was going to be a problem as well. He pointed down for Donovan to watch what he was doing and shifted the gear from parking to reverse. "The gear shift is the same, too. This one only has the most basic settings." Park, reverse, neutral, and two drive settings. It wasn't hard to figure out, right?
Oh god, what was he getting himself into? |

It was a bit of a stretch to reach the pedals (damn Kyu-Sik's unnaturally long legs) and Donovan wasn't quite sure which was the one for going and the one for stopping yet. Suddenly he regretted never trying out any of these games at the noisy arcades Owen enthusiastically dragged them to their first few weeks in California. He could only guess that you weren't supposed to use both at the same time. Despite a bit uncomfortable, he didn't bother adjusting the seat or any of the mirrors. Both out of not realizing he should and not wanting to mess with whatever Kyu-Sik had set up.
"Right, that's... Okay," Donovan nodded along as Kyu-Sik shifted the car into a setting he had no idea how to interpret, his estimation of how complicated this could be going from maybe a bit to what is even going on? The car slowly started rolling backward, and Donovan clutched the wheel and could only assume that's what it was supposed to be doing. At least nothing was too close behind them and he heard no terrified woodland creature smooshed beneath the wheels, Donovan confirmed with a glance over his shoulder.
Pressing one pedal down experimentally stopped the car with a bit of a sudden jerk (sorry, Kyu-Sik's stomach), which made it easy to guess that the other was for the gas. The steering part, at least, seemed intuitive enough. Getting the car backed out with a surprising lack of incident, he glanced back down at the mysterious gear shifter between the seats. Now how was he supposed to go forward?

words | 231 | Kyu-Sik felt a bit more at ease when he felt the car finally starting to drift out of the parking space. For the bit of time he watched Donovan, the man still seemed confused, uncertain, and a bit uncomfortable. Kyu-Sik wasn't really sure why he didn't just adjust the seat or the mirrors, as he thought that was a standard thing you were supposed to do first. However, he wasn't feeling well enough to question it or move around to fix that as well. As long as they were on the move then he'd be fine.
Unfortunately, that slow movement came to an abrupt end. A literally abrupt end. Kyu-Sik jerked in his seat when Donovan hit the brake, clutching his hand over his mouth once more. It occurred to him that he hadn't yet put on his seatbelt. Once he settled himself down again, he quickly slipped it on. They managed to back out easily enough after that short mishap, but then they were back to going nowhere. Donovan was just looking down at the gear shift again as if confused.
"When's the last time you drove a car?" He asked, not yet going the full distance of asking Donovan whether or not he could drive at all. He couldn't imagine someone agreeing to get into the driver's seat of the car when it wasn't really the situation for learning. |

Grasping the gear shift with confidence that he had no right to have, Donovan paused a moment before offering Kyu-Sik a simple shrug. "Never," he repeated his earlier confession, refusing to look doubtful.
It wasn't a reasonable nor responsible decision to get behind the wheel of the car without any prior experience at all, and Donovan was well aware of the danger he was putting them both in by doing so. If asked, he'd gladly give up. Maybe call Louisa for help. But he felt partially at fault for this whole mess even if it was Mi-Ho that forced her brother along, and was somewhat determined to prove to Kyu-Sik that he was capable of doing something to repay the trouble the other went through. The man's impression of him didn't seem all that great, anyway.
"Don't worry, I think I got this figured out." Because how difficult could it be? Teenagers could do it while texting. And to demonstrate, he put the car into what he hoped was drive and pressed the gas with an approximation of how fast he wanted to go.
Realizing the car was going far too right and too fast toward a tree, Donovan quickly corrected the direction. Probably not the smoothest, but he felt he was getting the hang of it and not hitting the tree had to count for something.

words | 233 | Never?
Oh god, he was going to die. He just knew it. In fact, he could already see his life flashing before his eyes. Today was going to be the day. Kyu-Sik wasn't entirely sure what to do in this situation. He wasn't close enough to the city to call for help from his father, mother, or sister. He knew absolutely no one at the picnic other than the two odd radio co-hosts that his sister worked with. He could try to drive home himself, but he didn't really think that'd be much better than letting someone inexperienced drive his car.
His options were limited to leaving his life in Donovan's hands or sitting around in his car for however long it took for his stomach to stop battling whatever was left inside of it. Against his better judgement, he decided to give this experiment a mile or two before he shut it down or just let it happen. "Okay. This will be fine," he lied mainly for himself. Kyu-Sik took a deep breath and double-checked the gear shift. The car was once again moving… just not quite at the speed he was hoping for. He nearly gripped his seat when he saw them heading for a tree. Thankfully Donovan managed to correct it.
"Be careful not to overcorrect. And not too fast. A little goes a long way with the steering wheel." |

uickly figuring out what Kyu-Sik meant by overcorrecting and why to avoid it, Donovan adjusted his turns to the wheel to be a bit more delicate, more controlled. At least he remained calm despite awareness of Kyu-Sik's inner panic, regarding the task with more focus than usual. Steering a car was a bit similar in concept to navigating his bicycle, but the far larger machine required a bit more subtlety that he hadn't expected. It was easy enough to get the feel for how responsive the car was through trial and error, but concentrating on one aspect made it easy to forget he was supposed to be pushing the pedal down too and soon the car slowed to a stop.
Oops. Pressing it down again, lightly enough not to zoom away, Donovan continued to nod along at the instruction. He eased the car along the path he vaguely remembered them taking up the mountain, glancing at the signs that seemed to indicate which way back down. Just careful enough for Kyu-Sik's benefit, both in interest of not wrecking his car and out of consideration for his condition. Donovan had taken care of plenty of sick siblings before and his ex-boyfriend's messy hangovers to not be all that bothered by the sound nor smell of vomit. But to be practical, they only had so many spare bags before they'd start having to pull over if Kyu-Sik's stomach didn't settle down.
Despite never driving before, he at least knew the basic traffic safety laws and how to follow signals. And at least there weren't many options on which way to go at the moment, so getting lost wasn't much of a worry.

words | 283 | Kyu-Sik found it difficult to get comfortable in his seat after the abrupt stop and the confirmation that Donovan had never driven before. He felt it was pretty reasonable and that anyone would do the same, really. The stirring of his stomach certainly didn't help matters. He found himself shifting in his seat trying to find a good position that would keep him from needing to ask Donovan to pull over so soon after they had just started moving. It was going to be a long trip if he had to ask too many times and he knew for a fact now that Donovan had no experience in actually pulling over.
Getting home was going to be interesting to say the least. Though a bit nervous, after a minute or so of shifting around he finally found a decent slump in his seat that made him feel at least somewhat settled. And Donovan didn't seem to be doing too terribly? He was avoiding looking out the window to really check after the horror of them heading straight for a tree earlier. If he was going to be attacked by an airbag, at least he could delay the duration of his panic by ignoring whatever was happening.
Though he had closed his eyes, he opened one to peek back up at Donovan. "I think we have to turn left when we get to the end of this road. The GPS will let you know, though. If you want to try out the turn signals before we get there, it's the lever behind the steering wheel on your left." Better to play with all the levers and gadgets now before they were in heavier traffic. |

Donovan avoided thinking about all the buttons and various controls thus far, all splayed out across every inch of the dashboard. Ones that were obviously for radio on the steering wheel, which made Donovan question the priorities of the consumer market. Ones for heat or air conditioning, which he dismissed as unimportant. He'd prefer things more minimal, less distracting. But that's why he rode a bike.
Well, that and he couldn't afford a car. Kyu-Sik would probably be real pissed if he managed to even get a scratch on it, because there really wasn't any way Donovan would be able to pay him back efficiently for the damage. He doubted insurance covered unlicensed drivers. He better be real careful about not running any lights, because Donovan really didn't want to end up in jail.
Playing around with the lever he hadn't noticed until Kyu-Sik mentioned it, Donovan managed to turn the windshield wipers on and then off, then flipped the highbeams on, before finally figuring out the turn signals by the clicking sound and the little arrow flashing near the thing he assumed was measuring his speed. Getting caught up in figuring out what everything did, Donovan barely glanced up in time to see that the road was turning and that he needed to turn the wheel with it.
"Holding up over there?"

words | 272 | Donovan wasn't really going all that fast around the curve, but it was still a little faster than Kyu-Sik would've liked him to be going. "Slow down," he gently pleaded, shifting in his seat again, "brake." And they made it without dying. His hand went back to clutching his mouth and he leaned his head against the glass. Based on what his stomach had already violently forced him to leave in the bushes back on the mountain, Kyu-Sik couldn't imagine how much could really be left inside of him. He held his breath for a moment and then took a deep breath afterwards.
"I'm not," he answered honestly, one arm returning to press against his stomach. "Do your co-workers usually give strangers food poisoning, or am I just special?" The sarcasm could have never been clearer from his typically flat tone. He was incredibly unamused, though it was hard to really pinpoint what would've really made him sick. He was used to the fried surprises of his sister, so he was fairly certain that it couldn't have been that. The stew and the drink that Louisa had given him was odd enough that he could have blamed it for his current illness. There were other things, but he couldn't really be suspicious of anything that Donovan had also eaten since he didn't seem to be suffering at all.
Either way, Kyu-Sik wasn't happy. He had to find a way to get his mind off of his stomach. The thought of food alone was enough to make his insides turn. "How about you? Need help figuring anything else out before we both die?" |

"I'm not all that familiar with their cooking to make a proper estimation of usually," Donovan spared Kyu-Sik a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. "Though I've found plenty of questionable things in the breakroom fridge." Mostly his own forgotten sandwiches, but he wasn't going to incriminate himself further with that detail. "But I wouldn't recommend taking anything Louisa offers in the future," he suggested what he assumed should have been blindingly obvious from the start. "Or I guess this is enough to dissuade a future occurrence."
And he wasn't sure why he was suddenly far chattier than he'd been on the way up the mountain, but it was increasingly difficult to stop even as he willed himself to just shut up and concentrate on getting them back to Koreatown.
"If we're going to die," Donovan hummed, taking another curve with more polite caution, "then I'll make sure it's swift." Not quite as reassuring as he intended, but Donovan wasn't all that concerned with anyone's hangups about death.

words | 253 | "Both hands on the wheel," he reminded as soon as he felt Donovan's hand meet his shoulder. He sighed at the rest of what was said, wishing that he had been properly warned prior to eating the questionable foods that had been offered over to him. Though he did realize that he probably should've taken Donovan's pickiness as some sort of signal.
Again, he wasn't a picky eater and that had been his downfall. Next time, and hopefully there wouldn't be a next time, he would just have to be more cautious about the foods made by the other radio people. "I guess you weren't kidding when you asked Louisa if she had killed it herself." That was apparently the number one culprit of his illness after all. It had tasted different, for sure, but it hadn't tasted bad otherwise. He tried to remember the taste to pinpoint what that meat might have been, but he stopped as the thought started making his stomach fold.
The second curve Donovan steered through as smoother than the first. Though it was still a little awkward, it was much better than the first they had passed. Donovan had never driven before, but it was obvious he was trying. He was learning. Maybe they would live after all?
Kyu-Sik let his eyes fall shut again. He offered Donovan a short quiet laugh that was muffled by the hand that still covered his mouth. "Oh, good, that's comforting. No warnings, please. It'll be a pleasant surprise after today." |

Both hands back on the wheel, Donovan snorted. "I spoke too soon. As far as I could tell, it could have still been alive." Which was a bit unfair, but apparently the meat had been angry and possessed enough for revenge. There was no telling why Louisa had been unaffected, except she was probably immune to all sorts of awful things.
It was difficult maintaining a steady speed, and Donovan wondered if that was more his lack of skill or just a side-effect of going downhill. Downhill really described the way most of this was going. Either way, he found himself on the brake more than the gas to prevent them from picking up too much speed. He didn't know enough of physics to really blame gravity with any confidence, but it was a workable theory.
It was probably for the best that Kyu-Sik's eyes were closed, as he cut it a bit too close around some curves or drifted over into the wrong lane while distracted by thoughts of how he was supposed to get home after this. He'd been relying on Kyu-Sik bringing him back so he could make it in time for work, but that didn't seem like it was going to play out that way anymore. And if Mi-Ho hadn't come to the picnic, maybe she was too busy with something else. Could she even drive? Maybe he'd just take the bus into work earlier, sit around for a few hours reading.
"I'd consider it a mercy for you, at this point."

words | 262 | The meat in the stew was something that had still been alive? He knew it was a joke, but even then the imagery was usually not all that unsettling to the boy. He had eaten live seafood more often than a lot of people he had known. The dancing raw octopus put a lot of people off, but he never found any trouble scarfing that down. Still, now that he was ill, the thought did absolutely nothing for how he was feeling.
He didn't quite shift in his seat, though he did find a way to slightly curl his legs closer to his torso. What was the best way to even deal with an illness like this? Sleep? That wasn't quite what he had hoped for. Thinking about it more than he needed to certainly didn't help. "I think I prefer it when you're less subtle with potential warnings," he decided, combining the two strands of their conversation together. This was making the assumption that Donovan's comment about whatever the meat was should've probably been taken more as a warning.
"Death as mercy," he nodded decisively, "I'd have to agree. It's been a long time since I've felt this sick. Or been in a car driven by someone without a license." The combination was a poor one, but nothing could be done. He was still keeping his eyes closed as he spoke, refusing to see what poor road decisions that Donovan could have been making down the mountain. He could feel weird things happening with the car's speed. Kyu-Sik finally took his hand away from his mouth. "Don't hold down the brake or gas pedal too much while we're going downhill. Try to let it drift as much as you can without dropping below the speed limit." |

What could have been more obvious a warning than outright refusing to eat it? "Less subtle?" Donovan questioned with amusement, bringing the car to an abrupt stop as some critter ran across the road. Though if he'd hit it, perhaps he could have offered it to Louisa for her next kitchen nightmare. Missed opportunity.
Another car approaching behind them honked, and Donovan sighed, pulled over to let them pass. He really didn't like the pressure of anybody else being too near him. "I thought you said you didn't want any warning at all. I mean, you seem the type to love surprises." Which no, Kyu-Sik really didn't. Seemed to take far more comfort in control.
Making sure there were no other woodland creatures to smash under the wheels and nobody else close behind, he got the car moving again, this time trying to use the pedals as little as possible. Keeping a steady speed was almost impossible, but the advice helped a bit and the car less stressed. "And while I don't think those things make a great combination," he agreed, trying his best to smooth out his turns and speed for Kyu-Sik's sake, "It's unfair to consider them comparable." He sounded the tiniest bit defensive. "At least the food poisoning is less likely to kill you."

words | 279 | "Sometimes you need to just tell someone not to eat something." It was mostly a joke, as he didn't blame Donovan for not warning him more. Hindsight was twenty-twenty and nothing said or done could change the current situation. "Surprises are only nice when you don't suffer afterward." Death would have been quick, as promised, food poisoning not so much. And honestly the sarcasm was pretty accurate. There was comfort to be found in having more control.
Kyu-Sik just sighed when he heard the honk of another car. He cracked his eyes open just long enough to see why they were pulling over. They hadn't hit anyone and thankfully it didn't seem that Donovan had ran anyone else off the road. There just happened to be an impatient driver behind them. It was a wise move to pull over, but Kyu-Sik was still adding in his two cents. "Use your turn signals when you're pulling on an off the road. Sometimes there are police officers hiding on the sides of the road and the last thing we need is a ticket." While neither them had much more than a sip of the drink that Louisa had offered them, he still worried about there being the smell of alcohol on either of them. Food poisoning was enough without any large fines.
"This shouldn't last long, at least, right? I was supposed to be at work in the morning." His stomach had to have been mostly empty knowing how much had already came up. He had no idea why he thought Donovan knew anything about the illness, but he needed to hear something other than their dark humor about quick deaths. |

"I'm not your mom," Donovan joked in return, "or else I would have made you eat more vegetables." Or was that admitting he was watching too closely to what Kyu-Sik had been eating? He'd been impressed that the man hadn't just tried almost everything, but finished it all too. And it couldn't have been because the food was that good, must have been a personal habit not to waste anything. The same way his own parents had shamed him with starving children in Africa. As skinny as Kyu-Sik was, Donovan couldn't help but wonder where it all went. At least his own thinness was easily explained, because the majority of the food on his own plate had went untouched.
Once he was aware of the possibility of police lurking around, ready to pounce on any small mistake that he was probably making without even realizing, Donovan gripped the wheel a bit tighter with renewed determination. He was going to get them home in one piece, with no damage to the car, and no fines. He tested out the turn signals one more time to make sure they still worked.
"Food poisoning? You'll probably be fine by tomorrow," Donovan guessed, with no real authority or personal experience to go on and guessing Kyu-Sik hadn't either. He couldn't imagine it being in his system for too long. "Are you still feeling nauseous?" It had been awhile since Kyu-Sik had gotten sick, which Donovan hoped was a sign of maybe everything had worked itself out.

words | 328 | "No, you're not," he agreed, trying to imagine how his own mother would have treated the situation. Every scenario that went through his head began with her pounding him on the back while he was expelling the contents of his stomach into a bush, and ended with her shoving kimchi and porridge down his throat afterwards. Honestly, it didn't sound like the better option this time, though the thought did bring a brief warm smile to his face. He really needed to get home. He would likely avoid his mother to avoid being forced to eat anything for at least a few hours, but still.
Perhaps he should've eaten more vegetables? Oh well. Hopefully he would be feeling better by the morning at least. The entirety of the time he had worked for the tailor, he hadn't once called in, sick or otherwise. Attacked by snakes? Go to work. Have bizarre dreams night after night? Go to work. Have even stranger things occasionally playing through his head and start seeing things out of the corner of his eye? Ignore it and still go to work. Regardless of how he was feeling, he always found a way to be there.
There was so much to do, too. He had pants to sew zippers into and hem. He had pockets to stitch and collars to iron. If he put the work off, he'd have that much more to do the next day. Which meant probably skipping his lunch break, but it wasn't like he'd really feel like eating anyway. The stress of the idea is what made Kyu-Sik's stomach finally turn again. "No," he lied. His hand returned to his mouth and he slumped down in his seat again to try and settle himself. But settling wasn't going to happen this time. His brow furrowed in a desperate plea, knowing only that he could at least last until they made it to the side of the road. "Yes. Pull over." |

Thought too soon, apparently, because Kyu-Sik went from looking understandably miserable but okay to rather unwell in a matter of seconds. Donovan remembered to use the turn signal this time to pull over, even though Kyu-Sik was probably too unaware to appreciate his efforts. Still, Donovan liked to think he did an excellent job at getting them to the side of the road in time before Kyu-Sik spewed all over the interior of his own car. That would be rather unpleasant to clean up, and Donovan wasn't about to volunteer to help.
He put the car into park, but didn't bother to try fiddling around with the key to stop it completely, not sure how long Kyu-Sik would take as he bolted out of the car and to the bushes. With a concerned sigh, he grabbed his water bottle and followed him out.
