words | 400 | It had been only a few days since he had first met Allison. Kyu-Sik had coffee with her a few times since their first meeting, and he enjoyed her company. She was level-headed enough to talk to without him feeling pressured or exhausted, which was a nice change of pace. Normally, he didn't really care for going out of his way to get to know anyone. However, he found himself cautiously being more flexible as the days went it on. Maybe it was the near-death experience that changed his attitude, maybe it was the sheer desire to have more to do in his life. Either way, he was now wandering into an apartment building with a tote bag carrying of yarn and whatnots.
The building had not been that difficult to find, especially with the help of his car's gps. Still, he was a little uncertain about making a house visit, as he hadn't bothered to do so socially in quite some time. It had been months and the last time hadn't even been for a friend of his own. However, he comforted himself in thinking that this wasn't solely a social visit. He was there to drop off what he had told Allison he was going to give her. It wasn't anything too special. Some assorted colors of yarn, some old pattern books he had started with himself, and two pairs of knitting needles.
Though, one of the sets of needles was the pair that his mother had first given him when he started. He had used them for dozens of his first creations so they did hold some sentimental value, but it was time to part with them. It seemed weird to finally be getting rid of them, but it didn't make logical sense to keep them if he wasn't really using them any more. They'd be better for a beginner than they were to him at that point. His only hope was that her cats didn't try to chew them up with the yarn that they might attack.
She had texted the address to him and he had followed the directions well. Still, he found himself checking it for a third time before he finally trying to find her room number. Which was pretty simple. He straightened his posture before he knocked on the door and waited for her to answer. Hopefully this was the right place. |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. She just took her scones out of the oven when the knock on her door alerted her to the arrival of her guest for the afternoon. Kyu-sik had shared a few coffees and texts with her and it was after the third cup in that same small cafe that told her that he could be invited to her apartment. Slipping off her kitchen mitts, Allison quickly made her way to the door and opened it to reveal the very boy she had recently befriended.
"Hello, Kyu-sik. Welcome in." She ushered him in and smiled, "I hope you're up for some tea, I made scones and we can have them with strawberry jam, and clotted cream. How does Earl Grey sound to you?"
Her brown eyes had noticed the bag that he had brought with him into the house and she had been looking forward to the lesson since two days ago when they had set a time for it. She had no other way of paying him outside of the monetary so she resolved to feed him the best she could. One could call her a mothering hen but with how skinny he was, Kyu-sik could definitely afford it. | words it's a mystery tags #challenge notes two cute asian grandmothers |

words | 221 | Any anxiety Kyu-Sik had about visiting the person he had only known for a few days quickly melted away. The smell of some kind of baked good poured out the door as soon as she opened it. He smiled and followed her inside. The first thing he did was take off his shoes, of course. It was something ingrained in him and it was something that he did when visiting most anyone's home. He figured that she might have preferred that anyway, because who really wanted someone wearing outdoor shoes in their home?
"Thanks," he said gratefully. He scanned the area curiously, finding it just about what he thought it would be from what little he knew about her. "That sounds wonderful, actually. Thank you." He hadn't expected to stay too long, honestly. And he really hoped that she hadn't gone to very much trouble with the baking. However, he wasn't going to turn down the offer. It would have been rude to do so after she had gone through the effort, right? Plus, it had been a long time since he had any homemade baked goods, and Earl Grey was always good.
"I don't think that I forgot anything." He said setting the bag down in a place that seemed about right. "Do you need any help with the tea?" |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. "Oh no, please, it will just take a second to ready the tea. Come over to the table top," Allison had approved when she saw that he removed his shoes upon entering her apartment. He was Asian, of course he would show some respect when at another's place. She had done a little tidying and vacuuming before he arrived. Allison led Kyu-sik to her living room which was connected to the kitchen and gave him a smile while she took out some dark tea leaves from her pantry. She had boiled some water already and she poured some into a cute teapot with black cats set in a cream background. She wouldn't be surprised if she had been branded a cat lady and speaking of cats, her two favourite felines chose that very moment to make their entrance with their respective black and white tails flicking behind them. "Kyu-sik, meet Coco, the black one, and Nellie, the white one," Nellie purred pleasantly while Coco stared suspiciously at the stranger. Allison hoped that her picky cat will respond positively to the Korean boy. | words it's a mystery tags #challenge notes two cute asian grandmothers |

words | 275 | Though Kyu-Sik wished he could have helped her, he supposed giving her knitting lessons would be his return. He didn't try to insist, only nodding politely and letting her lead the way further into the apartment. He helped himself to a seat by the table and watched as she poured boiling water into her teapot. A teapot that was covered in cats. She had told him before that she owned some cats, so it seemed more obvious that she was generally a cat person. He wasn't going so far as to think of her as a full blown cat lady, at least.
Just as he was thinking that, he watched as the two felines walked in to see what was going on. They must have felt a disturbance in the force. The Moon family had never kept pets. No one had time to take care of them, and their parents wouldn't even considering letting the twins have more than a house plant. He could say that he kept an orchid alive for a good year before it unfortunately fell off of a shelf. And that was the end of it. When it came to most animals, he wasn't sure what to do.
"They seem pleasant enough," he commented. At least until they started trying to eat yarn, but he wasn't sure what else to say about them. He hesitantly lowered a hand to see if he could get one to come closer. He was a patient and calm sort of person, so at least he figured that he wasn't a threatening stranger to have around in the house. The white one didn't seem to mind. |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. "Key word here: Seem. Don't let Coco fool you, that cat is the devil sometimes." But even as she said that, she shot her beautiful black cat an affectionate smile. Then to her surprise, his highness actually batted softly at the Korean's pants. Well, that had never happened before. She blinked at Kyu-sik.
"He actually likes you..." There was a note of wonder in her voice as she continued to let the tea leaves soak in the teapot. "Could you carry him up? That's the sign that he wants to be petted and touched." Nellie, on the other hand, was satisfied with her owner and wasn't generally as attention-seeking as her brother. Allison went to grab some plates and knives from her cupboards before retrieving the fresh clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam from the refrigerator.
"You're alright with cats, right? Chances are he's going to be all over you." She set a fresh steaming scone on a plate and pushed it towards Kyu-sik over the marble table top. Allison then poured a fragrant cup of tea in a china cup and smiled. It was so nice to have some quiet company sometimes.
"I hope it tastes alright, first time trying the recipe."

words | 279 | Well, he hadn't expected that. When the black cat walked up and batted his pants, he wasn't sure what it meant. It could've been that the cat wanted him to move, it wanted to play, or perhaps it just wanted to hit his pants. He was relieved to hear that it meant Coco wanted to be picked up instead. Perhaps if the cat was sometimes the devil this was just a trap and the attack would happen after he started petting it. Still, Kyu-Sik decided to take his chances. He nodded and complied, carefully picking up the cat and setting it in his lap as gently as he could. He would likely have to lint roll everything afterwards, but it wasn't so bad.
"I've never really been around cats much before. As long as they're not scratching, it's fine." Walking by the occasional alley cat didn't really could as being by cats, he figured. Especially when they usually ran away as soon as they heard footsteps coming. These cats didn't smell like anything, which made them better than being around a dog, he decided. Some light pets on the head and down the back seemed to keep the one in his lap content.
He glanced back to his host and gave a small shrug. "I'm sure it'll be fine," he assured. She was a baker by occupation, after all. "Otherwise, no worries. I'll eat just about anything." He thought back to his mother's attempts at baking and fought back and inner cringe. He had eaten it all though. Maybe he's regret his lack of pickiness later in life, but for now it seemed like a good habit to have. |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. "You're doing pretty well for someone who hadn't been around cats before." She sneaked a look towards a purring Coco, who just seemed so at home on Kyu-sik's lap. Allison took a sip from her cup of piping hot Earl Grey and smiled, "Before you know it, he might just end up in your house. I can't control where he saunters off to."
The scones were warm, crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. She threw in some cranberries and was delighted to see that the end product turned out well. At least well enough for a first time scone maker. The problem with baking and pastry making was that there were entirely too many items in the catalogue and most masters usually only focus on one or two in their lifetime to perfect. It's like asking a suit maker to try his hand at making designer dresses. Both are tailors, right? But the technique that went into either paths were very different.
Allison laughed when she heard him say that he'd eat anything. Another by-product of an Asian household, your mother always told you to eat up everything and anything on your plate, best if you didn't have any preference, especially when you were over at a guest's place.
"There's nothing wrong with having preferences, it could make your experience more enjoyable if you knew which kind of flavours and textures you were more inclined to. There's no one here who will force you to eat coriander. At least I won't." She shuddered a little as she thought about her own experiences with her mother trying to get her to stomach the strong flavour of that particular herb. She had always found it far too earthy and it had been only her move away to San Diego that stopped that. | words it's a mystery tags #challenge notes two cute asian grandmothers |

words | 354 | The only image that flashed through Kyu-Sik's mind at the thought of the cat following him home was his father promptly chasing it out of the house with a broom. It wouldn't have gone over well with anyone. Thankfully, he was certain that his host was joking. He gave a small smile and lightly scratched behind the cat's ears. Then he looked to what Allison had put in front of him. Regardless of how it tasted, it looked and smelled wonderful.
"I can handle some coriander, it's the red pepper that I get too much of. So much gochujang," he lamented. It wasn't to say that he didn't like kimchi or spicy foods. He was Korean, he had to like it, and of course he always ate it all when it was given to him. However, when there was one particular flavor that was overused in the culture's cuisine, it was easy to admit that he got tired of his mother or father's cooking every now and then. When he tried to think of what his preferences would actually be, he realized that most of them were much too subtle on their own to really mention. He liked tofu, mushrooms, and rice porridge. Boring and bland on their own, but that's exactly what he could appreciate about them. At least there were plenty of options of what to eat them with.
The scones were luckily not covered in gochujang. He finally took a bite of the scone on the plate given to him, trying it by itself before he would use any of the cream or jam with it. It tasted just how it smelled with a texture better than he had predicted. "It is really good, thank you." Kyu-Sik couldn't think of the last time he actually ate a scone, but the ones at the coffee shop weren't as fresh and soft inside as the one given to him. He would try it with the cream next.
"Anyway, so about the knitting. You said you've tried before. I wanted to know how far you got with learning the stitches before we began anything." |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. "Well, I'll keep that in mind. Not that I'd add gochujang in baking..." She could see that Coco was enjoying the scratching and the patting. Now that he knew Kyu-sik will indulge him, Coco will no doubt try again when the boy next came around. Coco had already determined Kyu-sik's position on the hierarchy: his personal scratcher and petter. Allison shook her head inwardly at her pet. Cats. Honestly.
She smiled brightly when he complimented the baking but she was happier that she found it delicious and then she paused to think about where she was at in knitting. It had been a while since she touched it and ended up with a botched end product. Now that there was someone willing to teach her, she might as well start from the beginning? Build the foundations before attempting ambitious projects.
"I think it might be a good idea to start afresh. I got by alright in the beginning but then I attempted a scarf... it wasn't pretty at the end." She cringed slightly at the memory. "And it has been a long time since I did that. I haven't touched it since. It has been three years?"

words | 210 | Gochujang in baking did sound horrendous. The picture in his mind was a cake iced with the thick red pepper paste, but that was too much of an abomination to even imagine. The taste of something like that would have been overwhelmingly bad. He was much more content eating the scone that she had given him, appreciating the cranberries instead. It was nice to have a baked good that was also not too sweet. He didn't hate things that were overly sweet, but it was much easier to appreciate something that tasted warmer.
He nodded at her explanation of her first attempts. For himself, he hadn't really succeeded in anything until he started an actual project. It was easier for him to learn the stitching when he saw them in action as opposed to just practicing on a swatch. Everyone learned differently though. She would probably at least pick up the movement easily once she tried again. "Alright, that's not a problem. We can start by learning some basic stitches then. Did you have an idea of what you'd want to make first?"
Her slight cringe wasn't reassuring, but he imagined it couldn't have been too horrible. Maybe. He imagined that a lot could go wrong with the stitch counting. |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. She would have laughed if she knew that he had just imagined gochujang in cake. A mischievous thought of actually baking that for him did cross her mind but that was an idea for another day. Today was a day for knitting adventures.
"A scarf would be nice, to rectify my last blunder."
Allison was thankful, really. Not many people volunteered to teach something that required so much patience and had so much space for mistakes. One overlooked and you had to unravel all the progress from that point on in order to get it right again. The fact that he enjoyed and excelled in such an art and also in music said a lot about him. Allison had a feeling that they will get along marvellously and that she'd be learning plenty from him, despite him being younger.
'But if that's too ambitious, don't hesitate to tell me. I'm sure I'll be able to take criticism, Seonsangnim." She gave him a smile and a tiny bow with her hands before her, it was one of the few Hangugeo phrases she could say without a horrible western accent after living in Seoul for a couple of years.

words | 247 | Scarf, round two. KNIT! Kyu-Sik nodded, deciding that it was an easy enough place for them to start. They wouldn't have to worry about rounding anything out and it would be easy to count the stitching on something straight across. While she did mess up her last scarf, he was here to figure out what the problem was and fix it before she could mess it up too horribly.
Another smile was parted her way at her use of Korean. He realized that he wasn't really sure what her own Asian background was. It didn't really bother him one way or the other, so he hadn't asked. "Gwaenchanh-ayo, noona." She wasn't that much older than him, but he was going to pay her the respect if she knew some Korean. He wasn't perfectly fluent himself, but his pronunciation was obviously pretty spot on after being raised by Korean parents.
The long-armed boy reached for the bag of yarn he had sat down, hoping not to disturb the cat in his lap too much. He succeeded well enough, giving Coco a reassuring pat as he straightened himself back up. "Alright, so you probably want to use these instead of the linked ones then," he held out his first knitting needles to her, not regretting his decision. "They're wooden so they're sleek, but things won't slip off of them easily. Better for beginners."
Theeen, yarn. He shuffled through looking for the most suitable scarf yarn. "Red, blue, or aquamarine?" |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. She gave him another smile when he returned the bow and called her the respectful Korean term for older sister. Allison waved him off, ”I don’t think I’ve ever had someone called me older sister before. I’m the youngest in my family and I don’t know many younger than me.”
He’d make such a cute younger brother. Did he have older siblings? Allison couldn’t deduce but figured that she’ll find out sooner or later. Right now, they should focus on knitting.
”Aquamarine.” It was a gorgeous colour and would go with many outfits whether black, white, green, beige, slate or brown. She wanted a long, fluffy scarf and this was her first attempt. Allison knew that much, that she was going to need loads of practice. Perhaps she might find some kind of peace while doing so, it’d be a great addition to her inventory of calming techniques.
“It’s a really pretty colour. How long do you think we can go with that ball of yarn?” It looked to be quite the generous portion but from her last knitting experience, she also knew that appearances were deceptive when it came to balls of yarn. You’d start knitting, thinking that you had plenty of string and before you know it, you’re at the end of the line, staring mournfully at the disappointing length that you did not envision at all.
Then when Kyu-sik handed her a pair of beautiful wooden knitting needles, she stared a little. Allison had prepared her own pair of steels ones that she hadn’t touched for years.
”You’re giving these to me?” Her brown eyes widened, ”I can’t possibly accept it.”

words | 203 | It was more of a term of respect than it really was calling her a sibling. However, he shrugged. "I sort of have an older sister, but I don't really call her that." Mi-Ho would have probably rolled her eyes at him if he even tried. He passed it off, taking out the ball of aquamarine, he searched for the end of the yarn that he had tucked somewhere into the ball.
Kyu-Sik hardly even glanced up at her when she made the slight protest about what she was being given. "They're just knitting needles," he insisted, even if they had held some value to him they were just a thing in the end. He felt like he was leaving them in responsible hands. "I started with these, but I usually use metal ones now. The wood slows me down." What was good for a beginner wasn't necessarily good for someone who was now finishing projects in the most efficient time possible.
He pulled out the end of the ball finally, gently moving the cat's head away when it seemed all too happy to see dangling yarn near its presence. Then, he started making the slipknot that would go over one needle's end. |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. Allison watched his every move avidly after smiling when he pushed Coco's head away from the ball of yarn. The cat got the message and sauntered away, tail and head haughtily held up high. She stopped protesting when he insisted that they were just knitting needles but somehow she doubted it, especially when he had revealed that it was his first pair. There was bound to be sentimental value but she resolved to take good care of it since it was his wish for her to have it.
She eyed the way he did the slipknot effortlessly, and mimicked him slowly as she tried to get her bearings right. It was a little easier with the knowledge that there was someone who knew what they were doing with her. The yarn was soft to touch and she continued observing Kyu-sik's every move with the knitting needles. His fingers were long and elegant, nails neatly tipping the nimble digits. Those were the hands of a musician. Allison paused and then stopped the lessons momentarily.
"Just give me a second, let me go get something." She didn't wait for him to give her permission before going into her room to locate a box hidden away behind a row of untouched books. Allison pulled out the dusty cardboard box and laid her hand on the cover before taking a deep breath and taking it with her into the living room. Placing the box in front of the Korean boy, she pushed it tentatively towards Kyu-sik and urged him to open it.
"I want you to have them."

words | 323 | After so much practice, the movements were automatic to him. He was making sure not to do anything too quickly so as not to lose her in the motions, first pointing out just what she would need to cast on. his slipknot went over the end of one needle. Then he began the process of making two knits and a purl. He was ready to step in and move her hands in the right directions if needed, but she seemed to be doing just fine.
"You'll want to make sure you don't mix up the knit and purl, so go slowly at first. Better to go slower with more accuracy than to have a quick mess you'll have to unravel. Also, don't make your stitches too tight or you'll have a lot of trouble making more rows," that was the only other advice he could offer her as they began. He wasn't going to hesitate if any mistakes needed to be unraveled, so he watched her carefully. The sooner errors were caught, the less damage repair they'd have to do in the long run.
Just as Kyu-Sik was about to ask her to try a few stitches on her own and then count them, she took a pause. He looked up at her wondering if something was wrong, but she exited the room before he could even ask. She returned with a box. That was apparently his. His expression betrayed him when he tried to hide his sudden confusion, but he felt the feeling as rather justified. They were just doing lessons, he hadn't expected to be given anything. The scone and tea had been plenty.
Still, he opened the box to see what exactly 'them' could be. His eyes swept over the old music books inside before he looked back up at her. His confusion hadn't faded. "What?" Kyu-Sik found that as the only word that could exit his mouth quickly enough. |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. When Kyu-sik blurted out a confused "what?", Allison had to smile slightly before reaching into the box to retrieve a few of the books inside. There all old music books which her grandfather passed down to her father, and him to her. She had been a pianist once, not amazing but good enough by Asian standards. Music had been a thing her father had shared with Adrienne and her. While her older sister took it to the next level in remembrance of their father, Allison stopped playing entirely.
"These were my father's music notes and scores. He played a few instruments and one of them was the flute. He started with the Chinese flute first before moving on to yours. I don't really have any use for them and they are just collecting dust." It was more like she had been too afraid to open the box in fear of triggering another panic attack but she had decided that it was time to face her fears after that dinner with Neil.
"My father would have loved to see them being utilised properly. I would like you to have the books." The fact that she was talking about her father in the past tense should tell the Korean boy something about whether the man was still alive or not. Allison handed the score she had in her hand over to Kyu-sik, showing him that there were annotations on the paper, that these were well-loved and well-used.
"You'd make more sense of these books than I ever will."
It was time to slowly let go.

words | 239 | He opened one book up and started to carefully slip through its pages. They were aged scores full notes, and clearly something that had been in her possession for quite some time. Even after she explained what she was giving to him, he still felt a bit baffled by the sudden gift. He had received things from other before, of course, but whenever given anything that seemed important or special in anyway he was never sure how to really react. Especially when that something was from a girl he had only just met a few days ago. Kyu-Sik had been happy to give her his knitting needles and yarn, but he hadn't expected anything in return for that.
"Are you really sure you want to give these to me?" He hadn't missed how Allison talked about her father in the past tense, so he was assuming that her father wasn't around any more. These old books must have meant something to her.
His first instincts were telling him to refuse the gift, but he was at the same time captivated by the pages he was turning through. As long as she was certain that she wanted to give them away, then he wasn't going to turn it down. "I don't want you to think you have to give me anything in return for the knitting supplies," he insisted just in case that was the issue. "I really don't mind." |

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. "Oh no, I really want you to have them.Honestly, it's not about returning the favour. These books have soul and maybe they can teach you something about making the people auditioning you eat their words. I'm already looking forward to your concertos." Allison gave him a small smile as she shrugged when he seemed uncertain about her giving him the box of scores.
"Like I said, you probably know what to do with them." Wistfulness entered her soft words but she quickly snapped back into attention as she reached for her new knitting needles. "And I know you don't mind." Which was partially why she decided to unload the music books to him. Adrienne had already gotten her pick of the scores, choosing only the piano pieces. Other than that, there was no one else whom she knew that would appreciate the contents of the box fully.
"Okay, back to knitting." A quick change of subject should do the trick. And it did, the lesson continued, with her learning heaps more with Kyu-sik demonstrating and correcting her as they went along. Before either of them knew it, it was a few hours since they shared some scones. Allison did not count the number of tea refills both of them had. She would have thought that she'd be sad to see the box of her father's music passion go but oddly enough, she felt lighter after Kyu-sik took over as custodian.
Perhaps she was finally starting to heal.
