Jun Shi might’ve been a sly fox at the best of times, but he highly doubted he’d give away his brother as prize if it came down to that. The way Lucien talked about it, his home life must’ve been terrible. Kun Shui felt that his home was safe, but Lucien probably hadn’t.
”That sounds… less than favourable.” In fact, it sounded downright miserable and he was surprised that Lucien protested so much when he was brought here as a guest. ”But… if you could. Would you go back?”
That was a loaded question, now wasn’t it? He realized he shouldn’t have asked just as it left his mouth, and then he felt rather badly about it.

"No."
The answer came to him so quickly and easily that even Lucien was surprised, but after a moments thought, he felt no need to retract it, or even to add qualifiers. There was no 'but I would if my father wouldn't kill me', and no 'but I would if I would be in charge'. It was simply no, as firm and final as anything in his life had ever been. In a way he could imagine it as an offer--that Kun Shui had wanted to know so that he could send him back. But he had turned the offer down. Returning would not make him happy. Returning would only make things worse. There were few things he could imagine that would be worse then returning home, and it was only faced with those that he would return. He'd return rather then be given to Jun Shi, for one, but that was the only one that he could think of.
When he spoke again, there were no buts--only an attempt to explain to someone whose life had been similar to Lucien's own in every way but one. Kun Shui had a family, and Lucien did not. "People like to say that blood is thicker than water, but they're saying it wrong. It's 'the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb'. It's supposed to mean that the people you chose matter more then those who simply birthed you. My family was not a family. At times I miss my siblings, but even then, why? There's no reason for me to miss them. We were never any closer then I was with anyone else. If we hadn't been related, we could hardly have been counted as acquaintances. I 'miss them' because it's an obligation, but... it would only hurt everyone if I returned. Making a grand reappearance would only cause trouble. So in the end... in the end no. Even if I was offered right now, the answer would still be no." The life he led then wasn't grand or fantastic. It wasn't the life he'd had when he could buy what he wanted and who he wanted. It was humble and quiet, with books and a warm bed, but it was far better then the life he'd had back then, even as a veritable prisoner.

tagged: Lucien time: May 17, 8PM speech: kun shui. notes: - - - The swiftness of the answer surprised him, and his lips turned down just a little before going back to a rather neutral expression. It was like Lucien had the answer floating around the whole time, or if he hadn’t put that much thought into it. He certainly seemed sure of himself, though. To Kun Shui, that was a loaded question if he’d ever asked one. If he answered yes, then Kun Shui would be upset. If he answered no, then he wouldn’t get to see his family again. He was vastly overestimating how close the Margaux were.
But realistically, he should have seen it coming. Lucien’s father had all but thrown him into the lion’s den, leaving him to die while they invaded Hong Kong about two years ago. Kun Shui could praise his own father for being smart enough to outmaneuver them, but that left the Wei family with a particularly valuable person that nobody really wanted. The more he thought about it, the more obvious it became and he wondered if he shouldn’t have asked the question because it was loaded, or if he should’ve known all along.
”That way of living just seems so… difficult.” Things were tough enough without the support of family in everyday actions. He still called home at least once or twice a week to check up on everything and if he didn’t, then his mother would. His father’s health was on the decline, so he invested more time in making sure everything was in fine order for when he did recover.
”I mean… I’ve grown up with the idea that family’s the most important thing. If you lose the business, the followers, the money and the fame, nobody will stand by your side unconditionally but your family.” He was glad that had never happened to them quite yet, though there had been a couple of close calls.

What Kun Shui said was the truth--and in a twisted way it had become Lucien's truth. He had never really had a family, and so in turn he'd lost everything and ended up with nothing. He had no business, no followers, no money, and no fame. He was a no one, dead to everyone and living off the charity of others. He had once considered trying to repair the damage done--to try and forge a real relationship with his family. He'd tossed that thought aside quickly enough. Even if he was willing to extend the hand, his family would not be. They would get rid of him as quickly as they could, to hide the fact that they'd lied to their companions.
They had not changed--he had. It had only been two years, and people rarely changed as much as he had in two years. Now he had nothing, and was grateful for every little thing. He'd endured pain that he'd been sheltered from as a Margaux, and understood what it was to be on the bottom of the totem pole. "Keep them close. Even if... even if I don't like Jun Shi, he still likes you." It felt stupid and petty for him to be giving that sort of advice--and even stupider for him to council Kun Shui to keep Jun Shi close.

tagged: Lucien time: May 17, 8PM speech: kun shui. notes: - - - It was odd to hear advice like that from Lucien. The Lucien from two years ago had more or less scoffed at the fact that, as a family unit, they were so close to each other. Now he was sitting there and telling him to keep Jun Shi close and not to lose him. It was borderline laughable, actually, and he did sort of crack a small smile at how ridiculous it all seemed to be.
”Well, you know I will. He’s my brother.” And even if the rest of the family was horribly disappointed in how the other twin turned out, Kun Shui still loved him. Jun Shi loved him too and he knew it, even if he was horribly stubborn about it at times and barely acted it. When the bad things came, they’d be around for each other and he knew it.
It was nice thinking of those things. It made him happy, and took his mind off the other things that were definitely important, but caused him a lot of misery. The small smile lingered for another minute before it tapered off, not because he was unhappy, but because he tended to revert to a neutral expression when nothing else was influencing it.
And, for a split second, his eyes searched Lucien’s face before landing on his lips, then flicking back up. No, he was being stupid, wasn’t he? Of course he was, he didn’t have time for those fantasies. But of course, as Jun Shi always said, he was a boring old sod who never took a chance with anything.

He did know that. He knew that Kun Shui treasured his family in a way that Lucien never had. No matter what Jun Shi did, he would still be family--something that Lucien personally disliked, but knew was for Kun Shui's own good. It meant he would always have someone at his back, always have someone watching out for him. It meant that Kun Shui would never suffer the fate he had, alone and friendless.
It was a happy thought, to know that Kun Shui would never face the same fate as he had. Once he'd have been happy for the chance at vengeance, for the scales to be equaled. Now he was simply happy that Kun Shui was, content to spend the rest of his life as a sort-of-prisoner, with no control over his own life. That was fine--It was difficult to judge, but in most ways he felt happier there then he ever had back in France. In France he had thought he was happy, surrounded by stupid things that pleased him, men and women who told him how great he was... but none of that had been real. It had been no more real then if he had closed his eyes and wished for things. Everything was so quick to fall away when he'd fallen out of favor and power.
Kun Shui was not like that. Kun Shui felt like the first real thing that had ever existed in his life. The first real friend. The first one who saw him for who he was and did not abandon him. Lucien was well aware of how quickly Kun Shui could have let him be killed--or how easily he could have left him to his fate with Jun Shi. Instead he'd stayed with him, holding his hand as the surgeon had put his crippled fingers back together.
That had mattered more then anything, and Lucien found himself smiling softly, looking at nothing at all.

tagged: Lucien time: May 17, 8PM speech: kun shui. notes: - - - Kun Shui was watching Lucien very carefully; subtle cues were easy enough to read in such an open book. Lucien had all but lost all his subtlety when it came to dealing with people. That edge he once held, being able to manipulate people with words and body language, had long been vanquished by his brother, no less. All that was left was a raw sort of emotion that was easily picked up from the surface. He didn’t know if he liked it or not.
But maybe, for now, he would. Lucien seemed like he was giving the wall the five mile stare; he looked, sure, but he didn’t actually see anything. He did have a small smile on his face, though, as if enlightened by some pleasant information. Now what was it that he was grinning about?
Kun Shui tried to share whatever happiness Lucien was experiencing, but his mind was knotted up with worry. Why had he suddenly felt that wave of nausea, as if something was going horribly amiss? He had no reason to feel that way, did he? His lips twitched at the corner, trying to sort it out in his head, and found that he couldn’t. His eyes wandered to Lucien’s mouth again, then back to his face.
Well, shit.
He leaned in; there was a small gap between himself and Lucien, but he attempted to close it before he regretted this any further. He would, he knew he would, and he never usually took action that would result in him feeling like he shouldn’t have. This time around, though, maybe he could chance it. What did he have to lose? Nothing. Nothing much, at least.
Kun Shui pressed his lips to Lucien’s, one hand moving to rest on his good knee as he did so. There was a sudden throb in his chest, then his throat tightened up as adrenaline filled his blood. Every part of him told him to freeze, and he did so. This would be awkward and clumsy and he knew it.

It was apt to say that Lucien had zoned out. He was somewhere else, mind wandering as he thought things through, weaving between different thoughts and times. He thought of his time back in France--his time as a real prisoner, not as he was now. He thought of so many things, and he hardly noticed when Kun Shui leaned in a bit.
He didn't have time to think of what the other man was doing, but the last possible thing he could have thought was what actually happened. Kun Shui kissed him. A real kiss, on the lips, the sort of kiss lovers gave each other. And it was impossible to tell what surprised him more--the fact that the kiss had happened at all, or the fact that Kun Shui was so terribly clumsy about it. It was as if he'd never kissed anyone at all, but Lucien pushed the thought away. It was impossible. Kun Shui, heir to the Wei triad... he simply couldn't be that innocent and untouched.
Which still left the question of what Lucien was going to do. At first he was simply frozen, as rigid and confused as Kun Shui no doubt was. It eased away after a moment though. He had no idea what Kun Shui meant by it, no idea his intentions. He couldn't begin to guess at it. Was it genuine? A ploy? An attempt to embarrass him? It didn't matter--he simply did what felt natural, leaning into the kiss, his hand moving down to rest over Kun Shui's as he returned the kiss with gusto.

Probably not, but at the moment, Kun Shui’s mind was trying to come up with a million things so he wouldn’t have to think about the task at hand. And boy, was it a task. Every one of his instincts were telling him to do this, or that, or draw away or deepen the kiss and in the end, he just settled with freezing to the spot and hoping Lucien wouldn’t notice.
But then Lucien leaned in, gently placing his hand on top of his, already resting on his knee. He had a better handle on the situation then he did, at least. He knew what he was doing; he felt confident in his movements, and for a second, Kun Shui wondered where it all came from.
Oh, right, he had a life previous to those two years.
Kun Shui moved his fingers just a bit, entwining them with Lucien’s as he sat there and just let it happen. He had to let it happen, or else he was sure he’d go running out with his face in his hands. His cheeks were burning red, though. Finally, he couldn’t quite handle it anymore and drew back as slowly as he could, taking a slow breath through his teeth.
”…oh.” As if he was surprised by how that turned out.

As they kissed, Lucien's eyes remained half open. He'd always liked to look at people, to see their reactions to the kiss, to everything. Kun Shui's eyes remained closed, but his cheeks were telling the story his eyes weren't. They were so red. He was blushing like a schoolgirl, and Lucien found himself smiling lightly, even through the kiss. It was so unexpected but yet still pleasant. Like an unexpected drizzle on a hot day.
He hadn't thought he'd ever kiss anyone again. Not properly, anyway. Jun Shi had kissed him before, but it had been a much different sort of thing. He hadn't chosen it, as he'd chosen this kiss. Technically Kun Shui hadn't asked, but he was confident that if he'd pulled back, Kun Shui would have stopped. Probably stopped and fled the room, considering how timid he was acting. Lucien was fairly sure his earlier suspicion was correct--this was uncharted territory for the poor man.
"Not what you expected?" His voice was soft--a genuine question, not a mocking one.

It made the hairs on the nape of his neck stand on end, nervous all the sudden. This was foreign territory to him, but he was used to handling that. Why did he feel so nervous and vulnerable in this situation, out of many? He’d walked into strange rooms with strange men who were potentially just as armed as he was, and he still didn’t feel so open to them as he did now.
Lucien’s question put him on end, but there was no particular tone behind it, except maybe curiosity. He wasn’t mocking him or teasing him. Still, he felt that faint bristle in his chest anyway when he did ask, his body wanting to curl in and protect himself. He wanted to leave the room, take a deep breath and lie down, maybe count to ten and pretend things didn’t happen like that.
”I suppose not.” His voice remained quiet, as if something or someone could hear them through the walls. He knew they were thick enough, but he didn’t know what the hell lurked in the pages of books or underneath shadows anymore; the flickering light of a dim candle wasn’t helping.

He wanted to kiss him again. Why had he stopped exactly? He wasn't sure. Probably because he had to breath, and hadn't quite worked out how to kiss for a prolonged period of time. Lucien would just have to make sure he figured that out, because he wasn't going to be content with short little kisses for the rest of his life. A part of him knew that he was getting ahead of himself, that thinking about any kisses beyond the short few minutes they had now was wishful thinking. That part of him knew they could never really work, but the rest of his brain was giddy on the kiss, and had locked that tiny part up and thrown away the key.
For the moment, there was just the two of them, with Kun Shui blushing like some innocent maiden.
His fingers were still twined with Kun Shui's own, and he let them linger there, giving Kun Shui's good hand a tiny squeeze, trying to be comforting. Jun Shi had never blushed like that, and it was a stark and obvious reminder of just how different the twins were. Even if they looked almost identical, they had such different personalities and goals. Despite his attempt at control, he found himself unable to hold back--leaning in to initiate his own kiss, soft and chaste as anything he'd ever done before.

Did he just draw away now? Walk away? Forget all about what he was doing? Part of him seriously wanted to. He wanted to retreat into the back of his mind and tell himself it wasn’t happening. His parents, what would his parents think?
He felt the gentle squeeze against his fingers, though, and then he realized he was still holding his hand and they were both resting on Lucien’s knee. Maybe this was a product of their collective loneliness. Kun Shui might have been surrounded by people constantly, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t lonely. Jun Shi was company, sure, but despite their closeness they didn’t interact often. Kun Shui was too busy.
The second kiss came as unexpected, but Lucien made his intentions were made known enough when he approached him slowly. Kun Shui leaned in just the same, pressing a little harder, leaning in to the kiss this time around. Lucien’s lips were soft.

It was lovely. Lucien had kissed a great many people in his earlier years, but none of them compared to what he was feeling at the moment. Those kisses had been pointless compared to this. He had kissed so many people, and yet he hadn't cared for a single one of them. Even connecting the two things in his head was difficult, simply because of how different they were. In one, the people didn't matter. Who he was with was a pointless distraction he paid no attention to. With Kun Shui, the who mattered more then the what. The fact that he was able to do anything at all with Kun Shui was enough to make him smile, a stupid little grin that appeared every time the kisses stopped.
Not that he let them--Lucien was content to go at it for years if he was allowed to. He'd starve and die before he willingly stopped, and he let his other hand move over, resting lightly on Kun Shui's side, just above his hip, his other hand still tangled together with Kun Shui's good one as he deepened the kiss.
The little inkglider was watching curiously, just out of sight. In the darkness he was more or less invisible.

To him, it was an eternity. He didn’t know if it felt wrong or right or something in between but he definitely wasn’t as ready as he thought he was.
Lucien’s lips parted ever so slightly and he felt himself leaning further into it, letting him touch him and touching back. The redhead’s hand went to his hip and in turn, his arm wound around his side, palm splaying against the small of his back. It felt nice to be touching him; the torrent of strange and alien emotions threatened to sweep him right off and away. Holding onto Lucien was keeping him anchored.
He found himself smiling. Even while he was kissing him, he was grinning vaguely as he began to press his body against him. There was the vague pitter-patter of his heartbeat against his chest.
Caught up in what he was doing, he didn’t hear the faint and far away footsteps. They would have sounded like they were on another world, on a different planet. The footsteps went to his office first, and then his room. Jun Shi, once he realized the lights were dead and everything else was down, had gone upstairs to check and see what his brother thought of it. He was actually surprised that Kun Shui wasn’t hand writing letters by candlelight in his office, and stuck his head into his bedroom to check. Not there, either. Where was he?

It was a good thing that Kun Shui had pressed against him, because it removed any uncertainty. There was no question that Kun Shui was pleased with it. If he had done it just to provoke a reaction, just to test the waters... well, then he wouldn't be pressing in like a drowning man trying to go for air. It was almost intoxicating, to have him there, to have him simply enjoying it and giving it without seeking anything in return. They weren't bargaining. There was nothing to it beyond the fact that they enjoyed each other, which was in itself new and strange for Lucien. He felt like he was melting against him, hand shifting to the small of Kun Shui's back, not breaking the kiss even once. It was too good to break, too good to stop.

He’d seen people kiss on the streets and in movies and it was always whirling-in-the-rain crap. This was just… calm. He could almost say serene. Kun Shui would’ve been content to stay there for years, Lucien pulled close to him. A million things still ran through his mind, of course, but they’d begun to slow. He was growing content, perhaps, and his panic was subsiding gradually.
Jun Shi stood in front of Kun Shui’s bedroom door after peeking in, unsure of where he was or what to do. Well, he could talk to security and ask them what the hell happened, though by glancing out the window, he realized all of LA except for a couple of buildings were dark. His twin wasn’t in the kitchen and he definitely wasn’t in the living room or the lounge or anywhere else he might’ve found him. He was still surprised that he wasn’t in his office.
Well, one place to check, right? He was sure he wouldn’t be there, either. At least he’d get a bit of entertainment out of it.
Only it wasn’t entertaining at all.
Jun Shi walked up to Lucien’s door and didn’t even bother to knock, just pushing the door open. ”Hey Lucien, have you seen—“ His words died in his throat.
Kun Shui tensed the second he heard the door knob jiggle open. His brain was reacting quicker than his body, but he could only draw back so far when he heard Jun Shi’s voice come up, then die behind him. Fuck.

In another world, Jun Shi would have opened the door on a room with no one but Lucien in it, and Lucien would no doubt have fled in fear--perhaps even screamed to draw the guards that stood at the entrance to the apartment. It was not strange for Jun Shi to burst into the apartment unannounced, but what he found was no doubt strange and confusing to everyone involved.
Lucien heard the door opening, pulling back only slightly as his eyes slid over to the door. They looked so alike, the twins, identical in every way save who they really were. Side by side in the same clothes you wouldn't be able to tell them apart, but when asked to speak, the differences became obvious enough. Kun Shui was careful and methodical but gained no enjoyment from the pain of others, while Jun Shi acted on impulse and derived his self worth from tearing down those who dared defied him. It was a mercy that Kun Shui would be dragon head, while his brother would not, although Lucien wondered if it mightn't have been better for the triad if Jun Shi was the one buried in paperwork, while Kun Shui was left with all the free time in the world.
None of those things mattered in the moment. It wasn't Kun Shui the dragon head that was with Lucien, but Kun Shui, brother of Jun Shi. He had kissed both the brothers, but only one willingly, and for Lucien there was no doubt that things were going to go badly. He didn't draw back any farther though--that was for Kun Shui to do, and he wanted there to be no question about if he was ashamed or not. If he drew away, Jun Shi would pounce--he'd tell Kun Shui that it meant Lucien was ashamed, that he was only with him for things he wanted, not for any other reason.
But Lucien was not ashamed, and for the first time in two years where he'd been in Jun Shi's presence, he was not afraid either.

Kun Shui had drawn back far enough to look over his shoulder, hoping it was a butler or a maid but of course it wasn’t. He could recognize Jun Shi’s voice anywhere, and this was one of the times he sincerely wished it wasn’t him. He knew he shouldn’t have been kissing him; it was a shift in power dynamic that he was well aware that nobody was ready for.
Jun Shi still stood at the door, but he didn’t speak a word. He was just in a state of shock and partial disgust, like he needed to run off and take a shower and rinse his eyeballs out with shampoo or something. It’d likely be the first time he was put in such a position, and he didn’t enjoy it at all. If he’d walked in on Kun Shui with someone else, he’d snicker and wish him good luck. Now, for that seconds, his mind was blanking out.
And then he snapped out of it, more or less. He murmured something unintelligible under his breath and turned on his heels, walking right back out the door. He didn’t know what the hell he was supposed to do now, but he was just about as traumatized as a kid walking in on their grandparents.
Kun Shui probably had it a lot worse. His face went beet red and he turned back to Lucien for a second before drawing back his hand, standing up and pausing. He was just… well, a whirl of emotions, and they all came rushing back to the surface with a vengeance.

Kun Shui was ashamd. It was obvious from teh wy he moved, the way his face was. Lucien was happy that Jun Shi was gone, but he knew that wouldn't be the end of it. Hoping that Jun Shi would shut his mouth and not speak of it was a foolish dream. It would never happen. Jun Shi wouldn't just drop it. He'd be sure to bring it up once he'd recovered, but it was obvious enough that he was reeling mentally from the whole thing. That was good. At least he hadn't recovered immediately.
When Kun Shui pulled away his face fell. There was no question that he would go after him, but he'd hoped that he would at least stay a moment. He did pause though, giving Lucien hope... but he didn't say anything.
What could he have really expected? It was an impossible and stupid thing, for him to even hope that Kun Shui and him would ever be anything more then a single kiss. Kun Shui was the dragon head to be, the heir to a massive empire, and Lucien was his prisoner. There was not a gap between their ranks so much as their was an impassable chasm, and his eyes dropped down to the bed and his empty hands.
