words | 274 | “There are more unsightly people than you walking around shirtless in Los Angeles,” Kyu-Sik responded in a feign attempt to be reassuring about the other’s body image. While he wasn’t really sure of Donovan’s style outside of it being much like a clean laundry pile, he hadn’t necessarily considered the other’s appearance otherwise. That just wasn’t something he paid a lot of mind to, especially with another man.
However, he took a quick and quiet moment looking over his host. Donovan was thin, yes, but Kyu-Sik was built like a beanpole himself. That didn’t strike him as something negative, as he was quite comfortable with himself. Donovan may have also been very pale, but that was a good thing by Korean standards. With curly brown hair and green eyes, Kyu-Sik wondered if he was hiding some terrible scar underneath his clothes that made him feel insecure. He wouldn’t bring it up. After all, it was likely just a modest joke and he really didn’t need to be thinking that much about another person’s appearance.
“I can do that,” he agreed immediately when he was asked to help. He was tired, but not tired enough not to help take care of the dishes. It was the least he could do in return for the good meal. He followed over to the sink and took the towel from the cabinet’s side. He wasn’t sure what he would choose to do after that. Going home after they were done was likely the best option, but he was dreading dealing with the busses at night again.

HOLD YOUR BREATH AND COUNT TO TEN The reassurance wasn't needed when he hadn't been too serious, although Donovan took the insult of others as a compliment anyway because there weren't a whole lot of nice things people had to say about his appearance. Mostly just worries if he was getting enough sleep or remembering to eat, and to be fair he usually wasn't. Still, he recognized that he was far from the tanned and muscled surfers he sometimes indulged himself in watching at the beach, though no desire to be that way himself. He was comfortable with his bony ribs without any actual obsession with staying so thin, although Edith had a way of making him feel guilty enough about it to eat sandwiches for her. It was an extreme sense of body-shame carried over from his family's values of modesty more than finding anything inherently wrong with his own appearance. And maybe just another way of trying to keep himself hidden, invisible. Such things were too difficult to shake, even if they didn't seem quite right. Rinsing suds off a plate under the steaming water, Donovan handed it over carefully for Kyu-Sik. Having help at least made it go by quicker, his roommate never was too willing to offer assistance. But taking care of the housework was how Donovan managed to cover his missing share of the rent, so he was in no position to complain. He worked at night, so most evenings involved him getting ready. A glance at the clock on the stove still showed that he had plenty of time. "Cleaning," Donovan answered honestly, before realizing how absolutely boring that made him sound. Although unsure of what other exciting things people filled their evenings with, he liked to keep his quiet and simple. "But I practice piano in the free time I find," he perked up a bit, earlier had been trying out some of the sheet music he'd gotten from Kyu-Sik's store. "It's a good way to just forget everything else for awhile." Handing over the last dish, Donovan turned off the faucet and removed his gloves. "Thanks." WORDS:### TAGS:Kyu-Sik NOTES:

words | 212 | As Donovan washed the dishes, Kyu-Sik took them one-by-one and sat each in the cabinet after they had been dried. The task was simple and went by quickly. He quietly listened to Donovan’s answer as they worked. Cleaning was not that exciting, no. However, it didn’t strike him as weird or boring. It reminded him of his sister if anything, which was always a mix of happiness and discomfort. Thankfully, that confusing mash-up passed at the mention of piano practice.
“It’s no problem,” he offered, just as he always did. Being helpful was tiring, but he always enjoyed the productive feeling he got from it. It wasn’t like drying dishes was particularly strenuous either. He sat the last plate on the shelf and closed the cabinet doors. “What have you been practicing?”
Kyu-Sik was curious and interested in hearing him play, assuming he had been practicing the sheet music he got from the store after their meeting for sushi. However, he wasn’t really sure if now was an appropriate time to be asking. He had no idea what the soundproofing was like in the apartment. It wasn’t really late, but it was the evening. He made a quick glance at the time. “Forgetting everything else for awhile sounds nice.” |

HOLD YOUR BREATH AND COUNT TO TEN He wasn't too fussed whether Kyu-Sik put things away in the right place and felt no need to open the cabinets and confirm, trusting his judgment enough to at least put the cleaned dishes in a place that made sense and he could find again later. Things seemed to travel around the kitchen anyway, organization more simply a suggestion than a strict rule. As long as things were away, it didn't matter too much if it was exactly the same one day to the next. At least nothing ended up broken, because his roommate had an innate sense of when something went missing and was never too forgiving. Donovan flexed his fingers at the memory. He smiled quietly, taking the damp towel and throwing it into the washing machine with some sheets and bath towels waiting for a full load. "I haven't had the chance to go through everything you gave me yet," he admitted a bit regretfully, but it had only been the day before that he'd been to the shop. "But once I started playing through Clair de Lune, I haven't been able to get it out of my head." Speaking about music always had a way of energizing Donovan, taking on an almost rushed eagerness. Gently grabbing Kyu-Sik by the arm, he guided him back to the living room in hopes of getting him to stay a bit longer. "Do you want to hear?" he offered, already at the electronic keyboard before receiving an answer. He would have preferred a real piano, but the cost and the space made it unrealistic. Still, it was better than nothing, and he played through a couple scales while adjusting the volume to make sure he wouldn't disturb the Jesus-loving woman across the hallway. "It's still a bit rough, obviously." WORDS:### TAGS:Kyu-Sik NOTES:

words | 198 | Kyu-Sik was a little surprised by the gentle arm grab, but he let himself be led back into the living room. He had said that forgetting everything else for awhile sounded nice, and he meant it. He wanted nothing more than to just not worry about all the things that had happened to him in such a short amount of time. This was a nice end to a much too hectic week. A soft smile came to his face when Donovan sat down at his keyboard.
There was no use standing around. The young man showed his agreement by taking a seat at the couch again. It had only been a day, so he didn’t expect it to be perfect. However, he was still eager to hear what Donovan could do in just a day, too. It was one of his favorite songs. “That’s fine,” he said. Feeling rather comfortable in the other’s presence, he even took the liberty to lie back on the couch. He picked up one of the books again just to give himself something to read, though. He knew he was tired and wanted to keep his mind active enough to stay awake.

HOLD YOUR BREATH AND COUNT TO TEN A quick glance to confirm that Kyu-Sik had settled down before he began, and Donovan found himself staring just a moment too long in surprise at the man actually laying out on the couch and obviously in no hurry to leave. As easy as he was finding it to convince Kyu-Sik to do something without protest, it seemed a bit difficult to tell if he was doing it out of politeness or actually wanting to do so. But Donovan was determined to make it worth Kyu-Sik's time, wanted to help them both forget everything unpleasant. Too much worrying never did anyone any good. He flipped back to the first page of the music, the beginning of the song slow and simple that he had no troubles. It was a peaceful song, and even as it slowly built in complexity, he played through the few strikes of the wrong keys without any outward recognition of his mistakes. He was sure Kyu-Sik would be aware of every missed note, but he'd worry about perfecting it later, not wanting to interrupt the flow of the music. Never hearing it before, he had little care for how it was supposed to sound, his own expression of the notes clear. Once he reached the end, Donovan's fingers stilled, and he stared at the lines of the sheet music before quietly looking behind him again. He wasn't quite seeking approval, wasn't going to outright ask what Kyu-Sik thought, but it was rare enough for him to have an audience that he was curious. WORDS:### TAGS:Kyu-Sik NOTES:

words | 161 | Keeping his mind active failed miserably. Nothing on the page he was skimming was actually sinking in. He couldn’t keep himself from focusing on the notes that were being played instead. There were a few wrong notes, but they were negligible, especially since Donovan hadn’t had a lot of time to play or practice it. It still flowed well, as the man wasn’t letting a few wrong notes stop him in the middle of the song. The melody wasn’t perfect, but it was still coming out as calmly and gently as it was meant to be.
He closed his eyes just for a moment and let his ears take in the surroundings. However, that was all it took. Somewhere in his counting of the notes, his focus drifted off to nothing at all. The book had gently fallen to his chest and his breath had slowed. Kyu-Sik was asleep in his place on the couch before the end of the song.

HOLD YOUR BREATH AND COUNT TO TEN This was a bit of an unexpected dilemma, not sure what he was supposed to do with a sleeping man on his couch. Removing himself from the bench, Donovan quietly stepped over to take the book away, setting it aside on the coffee table and contemplating a polite way to wake up his guest. If Donovan was to get to work, eventually the man would have to leave. He couldn't just leave him alone in the apartment. But with how calm Kyu-Sik's expression was... Donovan swallowed heavily, wondering how rude it was to secretly admire his still features and soft breathing. Maybe he'd let him sleep for a bit longer, there really was no rush, and Kyu-Sik clearly needed the rest. Pulling down the blanket hanging over the back of the armchair, he draped it carefully over him, stepping away in fear of disturbing the scene. Going back to the keyboard, Donovan continued to play some soothing music from memory, favouring Chopin's Nocturnes as nothing that would be too jarring and prematurely wake up his guest. But as the minutes began to turn to hours, Donovan realized that his time to leave was fleeting and he really had no intention of actually waking him up. He ignored the clock and kept playing, long past being able to run for the bus, no way he'd make it in a reasonable time. Way past being excusably late. Eventually he had to call into work, speaking in hushed tones to Mi-Ho that he was sick, and knowing the girl, the sister that must have known where Kyu-Sik had been, would be able to easily see through his lies. He'd worry about her confrontation later. He'd worry about facing Louisa later, for leaving her to operate everything alone without any proper warning. He'd worry about Kyu-Sik possibly being upset in the morning. Donovan didn't want to worry about anything now, playing well into the night. WORDS:### TAGS:Kyu-Sik NOTES:
