It nearly, nearly worked. The bug couldn't see, lacking anything even close to eyes. It's other senses guided it, and when the scent turned, so did it. It hardly seemed to notice the wallet, beyond a small tip of it's head to 'sniff' where it had fallen. It followed the scent trail as far as it went, standing over the fallen jacket and tobacco, seeming to sniff at the air. It would give Atticus and Marielle precious seconds to run.
But Marielle's own identification was working against her. The bug could sense her connection to the kingdom, and it could follow it right to her. The hedges parted, and while the pair would zigzag through the maze, leaving poor Leon far behind, the bug would simply cheat--going right through the hedges as they parted before him.
For Marielle and Atticus, running through the maze as fast as they could, something else entirely would happen--a bug would appear. It was the size of a human hand despite looking like a standard six legged beetle, which made it on the high end of things. It was flying, winging along and passing them as they ran. It was flying straight for the massive centipede, which halted when the little beetle finally reached it.
It was quite obvious that the two were communicating on some level, but there wouldn't be a single word spoken. The centipede's feelers twitched as it stood where it was.
If the pair stopped running, they'd find that the centipede would eventually turn away and begin back towards the mansion, leaving them be. If they kept running, they'd be able to hear the sound of the hedges parting, growing faint in the distance as the bug moved away.
Either way, they would not make it out entirely unscathed. The beetle would appear not long after, flying right for Marielle, and try as she liked, the beetle would reach her. It would land only briefly on her shoulder before taking off again, dodging any attempts to hurt it, and then vanish into the bush.
Marielle's bare shoulders would reveal an unsettling sign. Initially, there was no difference at all. After a few minutes, there would be a tiny black mark where the bug had landed. By an hour, the mark would be more distinct--like a tattoo. It would continue to grow for hours and hours until it took a firm shape.
With the bug gone, the remaining three would be free to find their way out of the maze unhindered. None of them were particularly far from the exit.
[Terr was not skipped, but can post any time in the post order, as I've already seen her post. This way she'll be in with the rest of the people for this wrapup round, and thanks for being part of stage 4.
Oh, and yes, the giant bug will be back.]

It was only a small consolation to see the middle-aged man had managed to fit out her signals, because even has he visibly chucked something at it, it continued to hurtle at her. She decided a strategic fleeing was in order, at least for a few minutes. However, there was no way for her to properly get back to the whole group – it would require going around the bug. 'Right then. Can't say I'm not a good person.' she thought grimly, and with a plan she turned and bolted down the opposite direction of where the others stood. This carried on for a few moments, and she didn't look back, trusting on its fixation on her to lead it away. Then, all at once, she stopped, and turned to face the sounds that continued to follow her. Rather than cowering in fear, she stood firm in her spot, holding her taser in front of her chest. Her eyes were filled with a challenge and her stance showed little else by defiance – it practically said 'eat me, I dare you.' She knew these things never worked like they did in this ridiculous action movies where you could kill something from the inside before it killed you, but goddammit, she would try. She would fry every surface she could reach.
However, nothing happened. No monstrous centipede came hurling around the corner as she suspected, nothing lunged to end her existence. She remained in her stance for a good minute and a half, waiting. Nothing. The worry struck her then, wondering if it had chased someone else. Immediately, she started to head back the way she came, which she was fairly sure she knew the way back – she hadn't run far, and had made a mental tick of a right turn she had made, she she turned left accordingly when she hit a fork. Just as she turned, though, she was ambushed by another creature, though this one was far less intimidating. It didn't stop her from lashing out, mashing her favorite switch and swinging the business end of her taser at it, failing quite miserably at hitting, however.
As she became frustrated her taser flared and sparked angrily, more than it rightfully should, leaving trails of charged light in arcs as the dark-haired woman attempted to attack. It flared brighter and brighter until finally, the beetle that had attacked her got what it wanted and retreated without a scratch, and Marielle stopped her movement, the light from the taser dimmed, and she stood stock still a moment, staring after where it had been. However, the silence was broken by a small growl and a heavy foot stomp, and there was another flare of electricity from the device in her hand, causing it to glow brighter than even before, a strong enough of a flare for the sparks to arc upwards and make contact with his skin, which caused her to hiss with pain as the burning sensation hit, and she dropped the weapon.
For a few moments she did nothing but stand there, breathing hard and rubbing her hand that had received the shock. However, after she was convinced she was alright, she bent to pick the object back up, muttering “Stupid short” as she straightened back up and carried back on striding down the path she'd came from. She made her way back systematically, managing to remember all the turns they'd made. She set in her mind to go find Val and get the hell out of her as she picked her way through. In the meantime, though, she went out of her way to look for the rest of her group, using the sudden quiet and lack of danger to even head down the path that the one chicken shit had run down to see if he was alive, which was where she eventually found her way out. She was only a little bitter, honest – though you'd never be able to tell by the dark look in her eyes and refusal to speak to anyone, leaving whoever was left with her with nothing more than a tight nod and a distant look in her eyes, before making a beeline for the edge of the property. She would keep going until she got a phone signal if it killed her...again, not the best figure of speech to use. Not tonight.

[atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,400,true] Ouch. Granted, the mask that was thrown in Leon's direction hadn't actually hurt, seeing as it missed him, but it had been enough to shake himself out of his dizzy spell. "Crap, I gotta run." And he decided that it was not a good idea to go in the direction of the two that were currently running. So he booked it. Out of there. In the complete opposite direction. He had no clue if there was an exit nearby or what not, but he would have liked to put a lot more distance between himself and the giant terrifying bug. He didn't look back.
In his panic, he'll admit he didn't actually think he'd find an exit. In fact, he thought he'd probably get more lost inside the hedge maze. A few twists and turns and Leon was pretty sure he had lost sight of the bug, although along with it his two companions. Leon hoped they would turn out to be alive and well, with that bug chasing them, but his main concern was getting out of here alive. Looking this way and that way, he looked for an exit. Right now he could do with a little company that made him feel safe, because after that, he felt in danger and a little vulnerable. Maybe a lot. |

Well it bought him a few seconds. That had to count for something; Atticus found himself wheeling around a bend, his shoes skidding and kicking up dirt. He slid behind a line of hedges after a while, careful not to touch, but also hesitant to go any further. Part of him wanted to be sure that kid got away—but he couldn’t exactly head back with a giant centipede blocking the path. So instead he waited. The tight feeling in his chest, combined with the shiver that shocked its way down his back was a sure sign that adrenaline had kicked in. If need be, he could run more. But he didn’t. Atticus stood there instead, listening, eyes narrowed. He could hear the crackle of underbrush, as if the hedges were parting again somewhere—but he couldn’t be sure, and the sounds seemed to be fading. Even the scuttling noise was growing quiet. At one point he abandoned the hedge, walking out of his hiding place to stare down the empty path. It only then occurred to him that he had somehow lost Marielle in the process of running. Well, it was bound to happen.
She can handle herself, a thought growled, it’s the kids that will have more trouble.
Atticus closed his eyes briefly and cursed under his breath. There was some dull buzz or drone in the distance too—another bug? Too bad. He couldn’t afford to think about it. He knew the way back to the mansion. Everything he had seen after climbing that statue was still fresh in his mind. And whether he liked it or not, he would not be able to help these kids on his own unless he had help. A tank or two would be nice, but hell, he’d settle for just about anything at this point. An unhappy growl pushed its way around his teeth; he didn’t like it, but as far as he could tell, he had to leave. It was the only way to help.
So he turned around and ran, moving as fast as possible. At this point it was in everybody’s best interest that somebody get back to the mansion and get help, or at least warn the other party guests that there was some weird shit goin’ on out here. He doubted anybody in his tour group wanted to play hide and seek in the hedge maze anymore than they had to at this point. And less body limbs strewn all over the place would be nice. They weren't exactly attractive decorations. Shit, he was not looking forward to the explanation he was going to have to give the cops. Especially if he was the only one that made it out alive. He'd look and sound like a loon.
Or they'd figure he was as high as a space cadet. Either way.
“I’m gettin’ so shitfaced after this,” he grouched.

As Tsuyu ran down the rows of hedges, he came to the sudden realization that they had never passed a wooden bridge as they walked into the maze. Sure there were plenty of marble statues and hedges as far as the eye could see. But he never saw any wooden bridges and they most certainly did not cross one either.
Despite that, he was already well away from the bridge and returning the way he came spelled certain death for someone like him who nearly fainted from the sight of a corpse. Knowing him, he would probably get lost as well. He should keep going. Worst comes to worst, he'll hit a dead end and he'll have to double back. Either way, he had to keep moving if he did not want to be killed and eaten and turned into a lifeless- Okay, no more thinking, only running.
Tsuyu turned a corner and felt like he could cry. Cry and thank whatever god or goddess or deity there may be. He had found an exit. It was no where near the way he came in from but he was free!
As he stepped out of the hedge maze, a sudden feeling of guilt hit him.
He had left them.
He had left the two women and Atticus in the hedge maze while he himself bolted for his life. It was not a comfortable feeling but now that he was out, he was not going back into the maze. There was the chance that they too had turned into corpses at this point and that was more than he could bear. The white haired male shook his head and turned toward the mansion. He would get help. It was the only thing he could do.
