He definitely noted that dread on his face; Lucien was like an open book, as far as he was concerned. Everything he felt seemed to show on his face, no matter how fearful or happy or anything. So far, it had been worried and fearful, and nothing else for him. He’d even looked quite worried on the plane, as far as he remembered. Maybe he was used to Jun Shi talking to him all the time, so he became lonely if it was too quiet. Now he really, really needed to talk to his twin and see what the hell was going on. His head tilted ever so slightly when Lucien began to stutter, but what he was saying was vague at best, and barely made sense in or out of context. What was it that he was trying to say, reminding him of his position? Lucien had no position aside from being a hostage with rapidly decreasing value. What did he need to be reminded if that was his position? It wasn’t exactly something one needed to have shoved in their face to understand, now was it? ”What did he do? Be clear with me.” He didn’t like it when people beat around the bush, god damn it. Was that really too much to ask? To say he was becoming irritated was fairly accurate, though barely any of it showed on his face. Outwardly, he was just as calm as usual, if not with a tiny bit of a frown around the corners of his mouth. He wanted honesty, full disclosure and a fair amount of clarity when it came to talking.

tagged: kun shui. time: may 1st, 9:30pm. notes: notes. Just saying 'he verbally abused me' was impossible for Lucien. He simply didn't think of it in such clear terms. For him, Jun Shi had always just torn him down. He'd dragged him down and beat his confidence to death with his newfound position. He'd made sure he was one hundred percent aware of how little he was worth, and how little value he was held. He'd made entirely sure that Lucien knew how likely it was he'd be killed.
So how was he supposed to word it? Kun Shui hadn't gotten the message. He'd hoped that he would, that he wouldn't have to spell it out, and he fidgeted, fingers rubbing absentmindedly at his wrist.
"That wasn't the first time." That he'd hit him. It was the first time he'd choked him, but that was that, and he was desperately hoping he wouldn't have to spell it out any more than he already had.

Wasn’t the first time? His eyes went back up to his neck, bruised and battered but covered by a collar. It didn’t look too bad, and he had never noticed anything else on his neck before… then again, he barely noticed him at all. He actually needed a sticky note on his desk that told him to tell his servants to restock the fridge with certain things, so Lucien wouldn’t go hungry. Were there any other patches of bruises he had? Was he beaten black and blue under his clothes, and was it that Jun Shi had been smart enough to keep his arms and legs clear? He blinked again. ”…oh.” He was still slightly confused as to why he was worried about Jun Shi’s hands, then, if he spent a fairly large amount of time using those hands to harass him. So if it wasn’t his first time, then he must’ve pushed him around before. Why was he only hearing about it now, of all times? He had literally never heard anything from Lucien about Jun Shi choking him before, or Jun Shi saying anything about if Lucien was acting up to deserve it. Kun Shui was effectively left out of the loop, and he did not like that whatsoever. His frowned deepened, probably the worst Lucien had ever seen it. ”And I was never told?” His voice definitely sounded irritated, though it was different than it had been before. Before, back in Hong Kong and the last time he raised it, his voice had been stiff. Now he just sounded like he was seething.

tagged: kun shui. time: may 1st, 9:30pm. notes: notes. Kun Shui was doing it again. He was looking at him like a piece of meat, sizing him up as if considering how best to cook him. Maybe it was just Lucien's imagination, but he felt like he was being grilled.
It wasn't as if Lucien could have just told him. When would he have? He saw Kun Shui maybe once every two weeks, and when he did, Jun Shi was often there. He couldn't just blurt it out. He doubted that Kun Shui would have done anything even if he had. Probably he would have told him to suck it up and sent him back to his room without time to eat, or something of the sort. Lucien had known next to nothing about Kun Shui then, and he knew just as little about him now. Perhaps a tiny bit more, but certainly he wouldn't have counted himself as knowing him. He couldn't take more than a rough guess at what he might want at any given time. Did he want total honesty? Because if he did, he'd be sorely disappointed. Lucien didn't have it in him to be completely and utterly honest. He feared the consequences too much.
He was mad that he hadn't been told, and Lucien shrunk back a bit, even more alarmed. He was good and angry--perhaps even angrier than he'd been before. How was he supposed to explain that away? With the truth, he supposed, although he was starting to doubt it would make things any better.
"I thought you knew." Jun Shi had said as much. "They were family decisions." Most of them anyway. He'd always suspected that not all of them were, but he was a bit mystified at the possibility that Kun Shui didn't know about any of it.

Angry may have been the right term for it; for one, Kun Shui never became furious. Furious meant you lost control of your temper, and furious meant you yelled and made rash decisions. Kun Shui never got to that point, but that didn’t mean he just never got mad. He was certainly mad right now, finding out that he didn’t know about a whole chunk of things that should’ve affected him a decent amount. On top of that… family decisions? What family decisions? No, he had never been briefed or asked about any of this, and that only made him seethe even more. He turned his head away for a moment, as if thinking deeply into the subject. Why had Jun Shi not told him? He was supposed to tell him about anything and everything even vaguely out of the norm. Beating his ‘hostage’ wasn’t exactly normal, now was it? At least, not in this situation. Lucien looked like a dog that was waiting for a beating, drawing back ever so slightly the way he was. He hadn’t come in with the intent to alarm him, they had literally just moved to Los Angeles and was probably traumatized as he was. A new environment was entirely different, and now apparently he was telling him that he’d been abused without him knowing. ”No, they were not.” His voice was lower than it had been a few seconds ago, and definitely edgy by this time. ”I will speak to him tomorrow… for now, there isn’t much else that can be done.” Actually, he could’ve called Jun Shi right the hell now and demand an explanation, but he decided to sit on it for the night and see how he felt about it tomorrow.

tagged: kun shui. time: may 1st, 9:30pm. notes: notes. He was angry. Very angry. He wasn't even making any attempt to hide it, and Lucien only shrunk back more. Given the option, he'd have fled to his room, only they were in his room, and there was nowhere to flee to. It wasn't as if he could flee to someone elses room. No, he would have to wait until Kun Shui chose to leave of his own free will.
At the very least when he spoke, Lucien was able to calm himself slightly. He didn't seem to be mad at him--just mad at Jun Shi. He hadn't expected that, and it let him feel a little bit less horrified by the whole situation--even if it was still horrible.
He supposed, in a way, he preferred it that way. For one, it mean Kun Shui didn't wish him ill necessarily. He might have, but he didn't seem the type. On the other hand, Jun Shi certainly did. Jun Shui had enjoyed tormenting Lucien, and Lucien had no illusions about that. If Kun Shui really hadn't known about it, than it was quite possible he might actually enjoy his time in LA. It wasn't like it was a forgone conclusion it was going to be terrible anymore.
More than anything, he was happy that the mark was his own little secret. Kun Shui almost certainly didn't know about it--only Jun Shi. It would be his little secret to the end. He didn't think Jun Shi would volunteer that information on his own. It wasn't as if Kun Shui had a reason to suspect that. It would be forever his secret.
He gave a tiny little nod, hands folding together again, slightly less nervous.
"Thank you then."

Lucien really might as well have been a dog that knew it was going to get a beating. Still, Kun Shui wasn’t usually one to administer punishments himself. He had people do his dirty work for him so he himself could keep his nose clean. However, with that revelation, he knew that he’d definitely have to call his twin brother and give him a good scolding. Maybe he’d actually yell at him a little, because he did feel rather angry about the whole situation. He’d never been told, kept purposefully out of the loop… Nothing that was suitable when it came to Lucien. There was a small amount of concern for the redhead, sure, but perhaps not as much as he really should’ve when he found that he was being regularly abused. He was aware, however, that he needed to calm down. Sure, he found something that he didn’t like on his first day in Los Angeles, but he’d deal with it on his own time… and not on his father’s. He’d decide to deal with this whenever he pleased, and nine in the evening wasn’t the time that he wanted to. Kun Shui nodded and went silent for the third time that day. He was suddenly thrown deep in thought, and he sort of hoped he didn’t need to be that night. All he wanted to do was unwind from a stressful day, damn it, and perhaps be a little nice and give Lucien a book. But of course, that was impossible, wasn’t it? Without another word, he turned away and walked down the hall to his own room, closing the door behind him. Perhaps, if he’d come alone, he would actually be able to get some peace.

tagged: kun shui. time: may 1st, 9:30pm. notes: notes. Lucien stood there, awkward as anything as Kun Shui just stood there. What was he thinking? Was he planning something? Was Lucien going to be hurt? Was he still going to speak to Jun Shi? What would he tell him? There were too many questions and no answers. People might have been able to guess if they had known Kun Shui well, but Lucien certainly did not, and Kun Shui was a mystery to him in every way. He couldn't begin to guess, and that only left him even more tense.
And then, just as abruptly as he'd come, Kun Shui was gone. He simply turned around and left, closing the door behind him, and Lucien was left alone once more. He stood there, nervous and worried he was about to come back, and only after five minutes did he finally accept that Kun Shui was gone, probably for the night.
He took the book to the desk and set it down, exhausted beyond belief from the little ordeal. He would sleep, and then maybe he would read it tomorrow.
---
The next morning he did read it--he didn't even think to try the door, waking up at an awkward hour, but he flipped on the light and curled up in bed, starting to read. He had little else to do with his time, and he wasn't yet hungry enough to be bothered with breakfast. He was finding he rather enjoyed the little book, even if it wasn't exactly his taste, but then he'd had no real experience. He had yet to shower, still in the robe he slept in, but he didn't feel any particular need to rush and do so. His internal schedule was all kind of messed up after all.

The night was spent in wake-sleep bursts and patterns, at times dozing off for an hour before waking up and staring at the ceiling or out the full wall window for another two. Jetlag, he supposed, was getting to him. Thoughts were getting to him, too, but he’d like to think himself level headed enough to be able to control those. So while half the world slept and the other half went about their day, he lay in an in-between state, the large bed nor the skyline providing anything familiar for him. At the very base, he just wanted to go home. So it was rather early when he found that he simply could not sleep anymore. He got up and got half dressed, moving about his room and trying to get a couple of things organized. His office could wait until later in the day, when the moving people finally came back and started organizing things for him. He wouldn’t let them lay a single hand on his papers and documents, or the things in his room, but otherwise they were in charge of getting the place in order. A couple more books came out of the boxes, half in Cantonese and half in English, and those went on his shelf. A few decorative objects here and there, a series of agendas that he’d collected over the past couple years. Now, where did his potted bonsai go? Did he leave it at home? All of this, of course, was trying to delay the knowledge that he needed to speak to Jun Shi. He couldn’t just put it off forever, though; he was raised to understand that he needed to get business done, and speaking to his twin brother had just turned into business. Finally, with a faint sigh of exhaustion, he picked up his phone and dialed the number. About half an hour later, if Lucien had been awake at the time, he would’ve definitely heard the yelling. Yes, they were actually yelling at each other rather angrily in Cantonese. Snippets could be heard even if the walls were relatively thick, something about what Jun Shi had done, and then devolving into family matters before Lucien was eventually brought up again.

tagged: kun shui. time: may 1st, 9:30pm. notes: notes. Lucien didn't hear it right away. Mostly it was because he wasn't expecting it--why would he? Only the house was so deathly quiet that it was impossible to miss it forever, and after a moment he sat up, glancing around as he tried to hear.
It took him a moment to realize that Kun Shui was actually yelling. It was the first time he'd done it, and the moment he realized, Lucien shoved the book back on the desk, curling up on the bed and dragging the sheets over him. Then he'd be able to feign sleep if Kun Shui came in--pretend he hadn't heard anything. Certainly not any arguing about Jun Shui, him, and something about the family. He could guess the topic through hearing certain words and simply knowing the situation, but it was impossible to tell what, exactly, was being said. What stance were they taking? Was Jun Shi denying it? Claiming it was for the good of everyone?
Lucien pulled the blankets tighter around him, not wanting to move at all. Let them argue it out. Let it all be argued away so it didn't matter, and then he could just never mention it again, and everything would be just fine. He wasn't one of those people who needed closure--if it was never brought up again, all the better.

He didn’t like yelling at Jun Shi, he really didn’t. The last time he’d actually got into a screaming match with him was over three years ago, and he didn’t even remember what it was. All he knew was that it wasn’t important enough to remember, and they’d never eve raised their voices at each other since then. They used different means; cold shoulders and patronizing voices, but never yelling. So it was actually rather surprising that they started yelling over a hostage, of all people. When he did hang up, he was no happier or more satisfied than he had been before. At the moment, he was a little bit glad that he was an ocean away. He was never really one for physical confrontation, and getting in close proximity with someone as hot headed as Jun Shi was never a good idea when he was mad. Kun Shui took a deep breath, gripping the phone so tightly in his hand that his knuckles turned white and his hand shook… before very gingerly putting the phone down on the receiver, barely making it click as he put it back into place. Another deep breath, but this one shook a little at the end in anger. He just stood there for a while more, before pulling on a silken robe and leaving the office, heading for Lucien’s room. Had he heard any of that? Probably a little, but hopefully not too much. There were family matters in there that he sincerely hoped he hadn’t listened in on. As calmly and quietly as possible, he cracked open the door to Lucien’s room, taking a step in and finding him still curled up under the sheets. He tilted his head in curiousity; was he still asleep?

tagged: kun shui. time: may 1st, 9:30pm. notes: notes. Lucien didn't lie. He wouldn't, because he knew how picky he was with the truth, and how angry he'd have been if someone in the position he was in had lied to him. So he had already made up his mind not to lie anymore--not even little things. He might omit the truth occasionally, but never ever a direct lie. Even those little omissions were going to have to be minimal, because Kun Shui still alarmed him. He didn't have the nerve to do anything sneaky.
So when Kun Shui peeked in, Lucien stirred lightly and then rolled over. It didn't take any sort of trickery to look groggy--he had only been on the pacific time zone for less than forty-eight hours, and he still wasn't exactly as perky as he normally was. Not that he was terribly perky to begin with.
"Good morning." Quiet but necessary. It wasn't as if he could just ignore him, and if he was going to check in on him, he had better be polite.

Realistically, he was half expecting Lucien to just continue sleeping until much later in the day. But his senses were still good, at least, and he tilted his head a little when he rolled over and gave him a groggy, sleepy good morning. ”So you are awake.” His tone was hushed at best, barely heard if the house had any more noise in it. For the time being, it was literally only the sound of the wind and the two of them, which consisted of pacing, phone calls and flipping sheets of paper. If anything, there might as well have been no other person. Kun Shui stood there for several seconds more, watching Lucien as he lay in his bed. The sheets were white, making his hair look like a harsh splatter instead of a sign of luck. Maybe he should get his sheets changed to grey, or something. A colour that was more neutral would likely fit him better. He didn’t really step in further; he found no need to. He had just wanted to make sure Lucien was still alright and hadn’t tried to kill himself or something, or perhaps overheard their conversation. No doubt he probably caught some; Jun Shi and Kun Shui had been in a full out screaming match before he hung up. ”Did I wake you up?” He probably did, truth be told. It was about time people started waking up, anyways… it was six in the morning, and already his phone had probably gone off. But for once in his life, he kept it muted, and probably would until a little later on in the day.

tagged: kun shui. time: may 1st, 9:30pm. notes: notes. He was groggy, but yes, he was awake. More awake than he might have been if he'd just woken up, but still awake. He was half tempted to reach over and collect his book again, but he had a fairly good idea that might be construed as rude, to just go on reading with someone in the room. Especially if that someone controlled every single aspect of your life, and you had no option but to do whatever he wanted.
He hated that, really. Kun Shui kept staring at him. Even Jun Shi had never stared at him quite like that. When Jun Shi was looking, he'd known what he was thinking. With Kun Shui, he was a blank slate. He couldn't even begin to guess what it was he was thinking. Was he wondering how long he'd been up? Was he thinking about what ever it was that Jun Shi had said? Perhaps it was a bit of both.
He let out an internal groan at the question. He couldn't lie--he feared it now, Kun Shui's harsh tone from the night before still vivid in his mind. No, no lies. Just the truth he supposed. There was no way Kun Shui could have expected him to not hear. He'd been screaming. If anyone else had been in the apartment, they'd have heard as well.
"No. I was reading." He responded quietly, making a tiny little gesture towards the book. He had been reading. He had also overheard though.

He glanced down towards the book that sat on the bedside. It looked moved, but then again, that might’ve just been him. His mind was looking for things to think about; really, he wanted to have something on his mind, and that something could’ve been anything but the issue with Lucien and Jun Shi at the moment. He’d let it sit for another day or two, if his twin brother didn’t insist on ‘resolving’ it immediately and call him until he actually picked up. His twin was annoying as hell, but he was still family. Lucien had been reading. He nodded quietly, though he was becoming sort of aware that he really didn’t like being watched like that. Well, if it truly bothered him, then maybe he could back off a bit. It was still his job to keep an eye on him, so it wasn’t like he was going to let him wander off too far anyways. But if that was all, then Kun Shui was about to go get breakfast. He knew how to cook the more basic things, but most of the times the resident chef did the cooking when it came to family meals. There wouldn’t be a cook here for a little while, though, and he was aware that maybe he should take it up as a hobby to do on his spare time… oh wait, what spare time? ”Alright. Continue, then.” And just as suddenly as he appeared, he walked right back out and into the kitchen. As long as Lucien wasn’t doing anything stupid, he’d let him be.
