tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: May 8th. 12PM. speech: kun shui. notes: - - - There was the mildest pang of guilt as the slip of paper left his hand, but aside from that, he felt nothing out of the ordinary. If Gabriel wanted to find his brother so badly, then Kun Shui wasn’t going to deny him, and send him to the person who could do such a thing… But the person always asked for a bizarre price. He remembered, vaguely, that there was this one time he’d asked a woman searching for her estranged son for a peacock. That had raised quite a few eyebrows, but he never exactly mentioned it again.
”You’re looking for Jun Shi.” Gabriel wouldn’t know he was a twin brother, and he likely wouldn’t ever find out unless he asked him to pay his price in person. ”I’ll tell him that you’ll be calling. He’ll be expecting you.” Which was such a cliché and dreary thing to say, but wording it differently would be a hassle. And anyways, his brother liked some forewarning so he could figure out what act he wanted to put up, and he wasn’t going to be denying him that pleasure.
Kun Shui sat back down behind his desk, looking a little less serious, but severe all the same. ”Understand that I’m giving you a bit of a warning. His price is steep, but it’s never in money. If you don’t truly wish to find your brother, or at least not very badly, then I don’t recommend him.” A private detective may have cost an arm and a leg, but at least it wasn’t literal, as it was sometimes with Jun Shi.

tagged: kun shui wei. time: may 8, 2012 - 12:00PM. speech: gabriel. notes: please pm me if there are problems. So the man he was looking for was named Jun Shi. He would write that down on the slip of paper later (and hopefully not misspell it horribly in the process), but for now, he supposed... well, no, leaving wouldn't do, Kun Shui was still talking. It sounded so ominous though. This Jun Shi person would be expecting him. That never sounded like a good thing, the thought of someone expecting you to make a call that involved prices. "I... I'll keep that in mind." Such calls, they were almost always stressful and definitely not pleasant. But... he would do this. At least, he was pretty sure he was going to do this.
Gabriel did stare at the slip of paper a little longer though, at Kun Shui's warning. "... I do want to find him though. That hasn't changed for the past some few years," Gabriel said, pressing his lips into a thin line as he regarded the paper again. A man who could help him find his brother... but for a price that was so steep that Kun Shui would not tell him what it was. (Or couldn't come up with an example of what the price would be, but he wasn't counting on that one all that much.) "I just... I suppose I want to know if it will be worth it in the end though." He would have to sit on it for a little while, he supposed.

tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: May 8th. 12PM. speech: kun shui. notes: - - - Kun Shui’s expression softened, but a very, very little bit. It wouldn’t make too much of a difference if Gabriel didn’t know how to see those kinds of things, but it was there and would’ve made his brother tilt his head in curiousity. So, he’s been looking for this Michael for a couple years now, huh? That was quite a while… And he could tell why, almost. He had a brother, and he’d search for him for years, but Michael was either stolen away or didn’t want to be found. By the way it sounded, it was likely to be the latter.
”If he’s alive, he’ll turn up. If he’s dead, Jun Shi will find his grave.” That was how it worked. If he wanted to find out where this Michael was, then he’d find out, alive or dead. It would barely matter if he was actually buried or if he was dumped into a ditch. ”But if you don’t think it’s worth it, then don’t waste his time. The price isn’t worth it if you don’t truly want him back.” Or want him back badly enough.

tagged: kun shui wei. time: may 8, 2012 - 12:00PM. speech: gabriel. notes: please pm me if there are problems. Gabriel didn't want to think about the possibility of Michael being dead. Just the thought of it made him feel sick to his stomach. What if he was? At the very least, Gabriel wanted to be there for the funeral. But if he was already dead, then there would be no way for that to ever happen. Was it too much to ask, to just ask to have Michael back and alive?
How much would having Michael back be worth to him? Everything, really. Because... in a way, Michael had in a way become the center of his life. An obsessive sort of center that was always there lurking at the very edges of his thoughts and striking at the moments that he least expected it. Like earlier some days ago, during class. Though he supposed that it was best that it happened that time. After all... he was one tentative step closer. "... If I find my brother, I am willing to never be happy again if it means that I know that he is alive and well and somewhere I can see him. If that's not saying something about how much this is worth to me, I don't know what will."

tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: May 8th. 12PM. speech: kun shui. notes: - - - It was entirely up to Gabriel at this point, and he merely shrugged a little, giving a dismissive wave of his hand. If he’d be willing to give up so much for Michael, then best of luck to him, and perhaps he’d slip in a word to Jun Shi about being kind. Well, kinder than usual. If Michael was really, really missing, Gabriel would be one kidney less at the very least, if not more. Likely more. Jun Shi always wanted more, even if he didn’t need it, and even if he threw it right out as soon as his ‘customer’ walked out the door. Jun Shi was cruel, but it wasn’t his job to tell people whether or not to go to him.
”Alright, if that’ll be all, I wish you the best of luck.” Because he sort of did, in that sense. He wanted Michael to be found, just because he was a twin himself who was very close to his brother. But at the same time… why? He had nothing to gain of it. Gabriel would likely never come back again, or if he did, he’d have to deal with the price Jun Shi wanted to pay or something along those lines. For more help, and he didn’t know how much else he could offer.
”Have a good evening, Mr. Kingston.”

"Good evening to you as well, sir." The blonde stood up, not quite sure if his heart felt lighter with relief now that he was maybe one step closer to finding Michael, or if it felt heavier now that he was informed that he might not be ready to pay the price. The moment his back was turned from Kun Shui, Gabriel bit at his lip as he debated whether or not he was ready to pay whatever might be asked of him. He would remain that way his entire way out of hte building, bidding the secretary a polite goodbye.
He looked down at the slip of paper in his hand, taking a breath as he stared. To call, or not to call? He was about to make a really bad Hamlet reference there. Gabriel tucked the slip of paper into his pocket, determining that he would think more on the subject later. Yes, mull on it a little more, so that he could make a perfectly informed decision. "A little more" meaning two hours later, Gabriel was staring at his phone, the number typed in and all he had to do was to press the call option. Gabriel took a deep breath, and decided to go for it. What was the worst that could happen? (How badly he would be mistaken.)

tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: date & time. speech: jun shi. notes: - - - Kun Shui watched as Gabriel left, pressing his lips into a tight line. He soon was told by his secretary that Gabriel had gone, and he immediately picked up his phone and called Jun Shi. The phone rung exactly three times, as his younger brother did tend to do, before he picked up with a cheerfully chirped hello in Cantonese.
”I’m sending someone to you, brother.” Even tone, quiet, but serious. He was composed and he was usually so much better than this and why oh why had he sent a desperate man to a man that could be so cruel. Oh right, because he wasn’t his problem. If Gabriel wanted help, he had provided help, and it wasn’t his problem anymore.
”Who?” After a bit of a pause, but his voice was smiling and he could hear the poison and sugar dripping from his tongue already. Damn it.
”A Gabriel Kingston, searching for his twin brother, Michael Kingston.”
”Oh?” The same purr, and he could hear him sitting back in his seat, relaxing his posture, just waiting to soak up the details.
”Yes. Be soft with him, he’s an innocent one.” And he knew with the bark of laughter from the other end that came next that he probably shouldn’t have said that. Part of him still didn’t care at all, but he just sighed and let Jun Shi have his little giggle fit. Be soft, he’d said. He wouldn’t be getting that.
-----------------------------------
It was just two hours later when a foreign number appeared on the phone; a similar area code to Kun Shui’s, and Jun Shi had been looking forward to it. One thing he hadn’t expected was for it to come so soon, however. He was smiling like a cat who’d cornered a bird when he did pick up, letting it ring three times.
”Hello?”

tagged: kun shui wei. time: may 8, 2012 - 12:00PM. speech: gabriel. notes: please pm me if there are problems. Gabriel had been seated very, very nervously on the couch at his own apartment when he had called, listening to the phone try to ring through to wherever the number Kun Shui had given him would lead. One. He was doing this for Michael, so this was going to be worth it no matter what, right? Two. But he hadn't known what the price was, and as much as he lo -- no, cared for Michael, Gabriel was scared, so very, very scared. Three. Maybe he shouldn't of have made the call, just let things pan out as life or whatever was out there wished it to be. A voice answered the line. Hello.
Gabriel felt himself nearly jump out of his skin, and he had to take a sharp breath to steady himself before speaking. "H-Hello," Gabriel said, his voice wavering a bit -- no. No, now was not the time to want to back out. The phone had been picked up, and now he had to see this through. There was no looking back now, even if he did find that difficult to do. "... Terribly sorry about that. Hello, is this... the one named Jun Shi, by chance? If there is anything else you prefer to be called, I apologize." Gabriel could feel his own hand that was gripping the phone shaking as he spoke.

tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: date & time. speech: jun shi. notes: - - - Dealing with Jun Shi was like driving through miles and miles of crowded hell. He’d put Gabriel through a lot and see what he was made of… and enough times, Jun Shi didn’t even know what ‘good enough’ was for. He just wanted to screw around with people, and the little blond who was desperate to find his twin brother was no different. Sure, he would’ve probably gone through hell and back if he found out Kun Shui was missing, but that was entirely different.
”Yes, this is Jun Shi.” A faint pause, the smile so obvious on his voice that it was borderline painful and he could barely contain his giddiness. ”Kun Shui told me that you would call. I’m glad that you did.” And with some coaxing, he knew he’d be able to get him to do whatever he wanted. Kun Shui had told him to be soft with him, but like hell he’d do something like that. His name had to stand good for something, after all.
Now, to find his brother… He didn’t know much, but he’d get a nice start with that photocopy of the letter.

tagged: kun shui wei. time: may 8, 2012 - 12:00PM. speech: gabriel. notes: please pm me if there are problems. That pause, no matter how slight, was unnerving. Gabriel swallowed nervously, trying to not drop his phone. Run. Every last nerve of him was telling him to run. Run, run, run far, far, far away. He wasn't sure if Jun Shi could hear the way his breathing shook each time he inhaled or exhaled, but if the other could -- the truth was, Gabriel wouldn't of have been surprised at all. The blonde pressed his back against the couch, feeling more than just a little bit nauseous when the man on the other end of the line said that he was glad that he had called. Maybe... this wouldn't be so bad?
There was no way it could be that bad, right? Gabriel shook his head to try to clear it before he said, "Yes, he... he did refer me to you," he said, pressing his lips into a tight line after he had spoken. What now? What was he supposed to say now? Explain the situation, probably. He took a deep breath as discreetly as he could before continuing, "I... I assume that he has also informed you that this... this is a call about my twin brother?" Gabriel felt his stomach churn, and he felt sick thinking about the thought of a steep price that he had no idea about. What exactly was he going to have to pay in not-money for this? "I'm looking for him, y-you see..." Dammit, dammit, dammit, stop stuttering. "And I was hoping that you could... could possibly help me with that?"

tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: date & time. speech: jun shi. notes: - - - There were always things to deal with, and Michael was just one more in a long line in his head. He might have needed to go and travel to LA for a little while to actually locate him, because according to Kun Shui, he was supposedly in LA. Supposedly. That was the biggest thing that he needed to deal with; the location was always the hardest part, especially if the person actually did a good job of covering their tracks. But unless this Michael person decided to go off-grid completely, and did a good job of it, then he’d be able to find him one way or another.
”Yeah, he did tell me who this was about. A Michael Kingston, right?” He sounded downright casual, though his voice had gone down to a low, satisfied purr. The boy sounded innocent enough, and he could almost imagine what he looked like; doe eyed and desperate to find this Michael person.
And that stutter… that stutter was cute.
”Of course I can help you. I need a bit more information on him, if you have any.” The more, the better. But of course, there was always a price to pay, and he’d heard Kun Shui had forewarned him about all that, directly or otherwise. The price changed every time, and he usually judged based on the person and how capable they looked. ”And, of course, there’s a bit of a price to pay. You don’t need to worry about it too much; I don’t think it would be completely out of your reach.” But it usually was, or else it wouldn’t have been as much fun as it was.

tagged: kun shui wei. time: may 8, 2012 - 12:00PM. speech: gabriel. notes: please pm me if there are problems. "Ah, yes, he... his name is Michael Kingston," Gabriel replied, his voice trailing off a bit at the end. That purr in the other man's voice was unsettling and only made Gabriel wish that he could sink further into the chair if that was at all possible. (It wasn't, to be very fair.) Usually, such a tone was supposed to make people feel at ease (maybe), but maybe it was the state of his nerves, or just the climate of the situation, but this Jun Shi didn't sound like very good news to the blonde boy at all.
He couldn't just hang up now though. No, that was both rude, and... counterproductive to what he was trying to do here. It wasn't going to be that bad, he kept telling himself that. No, there was no way it could be that bad. There was simply no way. Simply none. "I... I can give you information about how he looks. Uhm... I might have photos somewhere. But they're old, and I don't... I don't know how much help they'll be." It had been a long time, to be very fair -- who knew how little or much Michael might have changed in that time? He certainly didn't have any idea. Ah, but he also had no idea what the price for this would entail. Gabriel felt his stomach drop again, and he was silent for a moment before he finally asked, perhaps a little quietly, "Actually... I was going to a-ask..." A deep breath. "... what exactly will I have to pay for this? I was... told that it most likely won't be money..."

tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: date & time. speech: jun shi. notes: - - - Michael didn’t like talking over the phone; it didn’t allow him to use body language to gauge reactions, or show reactions himself. It didn’t let poor Gabriel see how relaxed he looked, how at ease he was compared to him, who was probably jittering on the other end. Poor boy; what was Kun Shui thinking, sending him here? He’d eat him right up and spit him out and there would be nothing else once he was done, and perhaps nothing of his precious twin, too. Now, how would that work?
”Yes, a photo or two would be nice. Just send them to Kun Shui’s email, and he’ll pass them along to me.” His voice was soft still, not at all worried about the state of affairs, though his twin would probably chide him on it later. Even if they were outdated, people didn’t change so radically unless they absolutely wanted to disappear, and he was hoping it’d be easier to find Michael. But if it wasn’t… well, too bad for the both of them.
As for payment, Jun Shi made a faint hmph sound through the phone. ”Ah, yes, well… I don’t exactly need money.” He had enough to live out the rest of his life without working a day, and his brother was perfectly willing to allow him to do so. But there was always a price to pay, of course. Always.
”Over the phone is a little… noncommittal, I should say. It’s a little too open for my tastes. How about I come over there to LA, hm? You can read over my contract then.” Yes, he’d write up a nice little contract and seal him away forever.

tagged: kun shui wei. time: may 8, 2012 - 12:00PM. speech: gabriel. notes: please pm me if there are problems. Gabriel nodded, even if Jun Shi couldn't see him -- that fact didn't occur to him until a little while after. It was habit, really, for him to nod when he was supposed to agree with something. Old habits die hard, after all. "Ah, yes, I can do that," Gabriel replied, though he had to steel himself a bit at the thought of going through photos of Michael. He didn't go through them often, because it was... well, a bit painful to see the photographs. Reminders of happier and better times were a bit of a double-edged sword here. "I'll get them sent over as soon as possible."
So money was definitely out of the question. Gabriel wasn't sure what else he could offer the other man. It money wasn't what he wanted to be paid back with, then objects would probably be out of the question as well. Not that he even had all that much to give away in the first place. What was the most valuable thing he owned? Probably his laptop, if he really thought about it. But even then... it wasn't anything special either. Gabriel was so caught up in wondering what he could offer that he almost missed it when Jun Shi informed him that he would much rather speak of prices in person, when he was actually in Los Angeles. Oh. Oh. Gabriel wasn't sure how he felt about that, but managed to say quietly, "A... a contract?" There was a contract? An unpleasant chill ran down his spine. "I mean... I can... take a look...?"

tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: date & time. speech: jun shi. notes: - - - Pictures were nice, but he wasn’t sure how useful they would be. A picture could mean he could more easily spot him in passing, but otherwise, it wouldn’t help all that much. Maybe he’d even send his photo out to his contacts and see if anybody had spotted him in the area. He was already planning what he was going to do, where he was going to search, everything and anything. He licked his lips again, grinning to himself and crossing his legs over on the couch. The more information, the better.
”The problem is, travelling to America is very tiring, and very time consuming.” And he wasn’t about to travel all that way only to have Gabriel turn him down when he got there. ”I need to get some sort of assurance, at least. Tell me, are you sure you want me to find Michael?” Because he didn’t seem so difficult to find so far, if he thought of it the right way. He’d have pictures, and plenty of information, though outdated, at his hands. He had contacts and resources and he’d find him, sooner or later.
”The question I’m trying to ask is, how dedicated are you, to finding Michael?” A solid but heart wrenching question, and one he couldn’t help but throw out.

tagged: kun shui wei. time: may 8, 2012 - 12:00PM. speech: gabriel. notes: please pm me if there are problems. Traveling to America? Gabriel was very quiet for a moment. So he was calling out of the country right now. Ugh, great, this was going to show up on his phone bill now, wasn't it? He supposed he would have to figure out a way to explain that later to his parents. Because there was no way that his mother and father were going to let this slip their attention. But nevermind that, he would worry about that later -- there was enough to worry about as it was. "Wait, why would --" Gabriel was caught off-guard by Jun Shi's question about whether or not he wanted him to find Michael. Of course he wanted the other to find his brother, why else would be calling in the first place -- oh.
Gabriel felt his heart give a painful thump as his mouth went dry. Dedication. Again, dedication was what it came back to. How much was he willing to give to find Michael? How much was he willing to give if it meant that he could have him back? "... I'd risk never being happy again if it meant getting him back safe and sound, i-if that means anything," Gabriel finally said, reaching up to brush at something that was on his cheek. Tears. He hadn't even noticed that he had started crying.

tagged: Gabriel Kingston. time: date & time. speech: jun shi. notes: - - - And there it was; so he really wanted his brother back. Perhaps he’d do anything, or perhaps he was just as good as a liar as Jun Shi was, which his vanity told him was highly unlikely. It didn’t seem like he could trick both brothers, but anything was possible at some time or another. He grinned behind the phone, pausing to consider it. Should he take this job on? It didn’t sound too difficult in particular, and it wasn’t like it would hurt. All he needed to do was waltz into Los Angeles and waltz back out with whatever he wanted. Not bad.
â€â€¦Alright, Gabriel. You’ll get what you want.†Finding Michael and then paying a hefty sum that’d make him question everything. He’d need to go write up his contract now. â€I’ll be there soon enough. You don’t need to call back.â€
Without waiting for an answer, he hung up and grinned like a cat. He’d just caught that mouse, and there was no turning back.
