tagged: name. time: date & time. notes: notes. There was no way he'd ever go back to being a hunter. It simply would never happen. He was no longer suited to train anyone, or to fight, or to do anything but sit behind a desk. Even if Naos had meant well--that his experience could be put to better use and a desk job probably wasn't ideal--all Mikhail heard was that he wasn't a good enough candidate. And he wasn't--there were certainly people more experienced then him who deserved the position he held. Even if he didn't know it, Naos had just more or less stabbed Mikhail in his weakest spot. He didn't think he deserved anything, and if Mikhail had gotten to chose his own fate, he'd have been sent off to the most remote society base to clean out the toilets for the rest of his life. He didn't deserve anything, and reminding him of that was salt in the wound. He glanced away, not quite looking at Naos, and gave a little shrug.
"Probably Madakis. He was always my superior up the food chain, but I don't know if he had a direct say in my reassignment." Possibly it was the leader of the Antarctic base he'd been stationed at, which would certainly explain a lot. "I can do my job adequately, at least." Because he was adequate at it, if nothing else. He wasn't good or great. He was adequate, and little else.
There was no real physical handicap to be found. He was thin, certainly, and there were plenty of scars here and there, but that wasn't out of the ordinary for any hunter who had seen combat. The scars were largely mental and social. How could he realistically try again, knowing he'd failed? How could anyone be expected to trust him on a team knowing what had happened to the last one?
"I can't imagine I'll be a very good teacher for you."

words | 372 | That wasn't really the reply he thought was coming. Adequate wasn't the best word to hear from someone he was supposed to be following for the day. The comment that he wasn't likely to be a good teacher for him was the cherry on top. Naos didn't hold back a noise that was somewhere between a sigh and a disappointed groan as he let himself slide down until his head was against the desk's surface. It wasn't Mikhail's fault, of course. He was questioning whoever thought it was a good idea for him to trail this person for the day. The boy could usually say he liked Madaki as much as he was capable, and he met everything that came from him with zeal, even if it was indirectly. This, however, left him asking 'why'.
He was pouting briefly, yes, but he at least recovered quickly from this act. "Okay! That's alright. To be honest, I don't think I really need a teacher. My mother's an archivist of sorts, and I already know it's not really for me. I always assumed the field was full of really neurotic people because of her actually. You know, she used to even label my underwear until I was twelve and told her that if I could read in four languages then I could label my own underwear. Not that I still do that now, but-- Well, anyway. That's not the point."
There was the slightest sense of satisfaction that he felt when he realized what he could do with this dilemma. He stood back up and stepped closer to Mikhail. "Let's turn the tables for the day. I've been at this base longer than you. Has anyone shown you all around the base yet? Have you been taught everything about the computer network in the building? Do you know many people here? Do you know much about the area we're in? What do you like to eat or drink? Basically… what can I help you with that you don't already know?" Yes, this would do. Naos wasn't about to let the day go to waste, as much as he did enjoy wasting time. He didn't drag himself out of bed while still sore for nothing. |

tagged: name. time: date & time. notes: notes. He was a disappointment. Naos's reaction said as much, and he glanced away awkwardly, not wanting to look at the boy any more then he was. He felt miserable, as if he'd been kicked when he was down, and it was likely that his foul mood would continue for the rest of the day. At the very least, it was likely to continue for a majority of it, even if he tried to push it down. Once he'd gotten into his own personal loop of misery, there wasn't a lot that could be done to stop it. Even if Naos was able to snap back easily, it was a gift of the young and the spry, and not something Mikhail was capable of.
His mother sounded fine and all, but the offer of a tour at least perked him up slightly, even if he still looked miserable.
"No. No one has really given me a tour." He was expected to be able to figure it out on his own, and for the most part he had managed just fine. "I only know Pasha and Madaki, and everyone else by position rather then name." He knew the secretaries, for example, but they'd never been introduced to them, and if pressed for the name he'd be forced to balk. He glanced briefly up at the cat, considering the offer.
"I suppose you could help me with those things, if you'd like. It would probably be rather boring for you, but I can't say I know much about living with a civilian populace." He offered a short shrug in response. He really didn't know much of anything about that. Antarctica had a tiny civilian population off base, but no one from the society base was allowed to visit. After all, there was no possible way to explain that you'd popped in to visit in a location that wasn't supposed to have any other habitable areas in it. The existence of the base was a closely kept secret.

words | 345 | The man was so painfully new, but there was a plan and an attitude that Naos could work with. This wasn't what he had been expecting for the day and he was still a little disappointed about it. He wasn't going to lie or even pretend to console the man whose look now seemed rather miserable. But, when life gave you lemons, you genetically engineered and manipulated those lemons to suit your tastes. Piece of cake. "Now's a good time for learning about your surroundings then. I have a mental map of the building, and I've also been trying to meet as many people as I can here. You never know who you might need around, or who you might run into outside of the base, right?"
The teenager knew his weaknesses. The night before had only made them that much more clear. So, knowing that something weird could happen just about anywhere at anytime, it was nice to have a large group of acquaintances he could call in an emergency. By the time he was through, Mikhail would be added to that list. The man wasn't a hunter anymore, but maybe he was good at offering tips or something of the sort? Or Naos could try and take advantage of artifact knowledge once he became more acclimated with his job. Once never knew for sure.
"Alright, first, get some paper or a notebook, and a good pen! We're going to take a tour," he suggested with a smile. However, his eyes did wander back to the cat also. He doubted that it would really move from that spot on the bookshelf when it was in such a new place. Though, if left alone, the cat would also probably feel more comfortable exploring. It would probably be fine assuming they just closed the door, but… then again it was a winged cat that may or may not have some sort of elemental properties. He couldn't say, but either way it was Mikhail's cat. Let him worry about the consequences. "Should we leave that one here?" |

tagged: name. time: date & time. notes: topic over?. It was almost painfully embarrassing how much more coordinated and organized Naos was. Sure, they were both new, but Naos had picked up that newness and bashed it around a bit. Mikhail was still struggling to spar with his own, and considering both the age and the experience gap, he felt embarrassed by the difference between them. He tried to console himself by reminding himself that he could do some things better then Naos, but at the moment he was struggling to remember what those things were. None of them seemed particularly important anyway.
He had a notebook in his desk, which he retrieved without much hesitation. He technically had a map of the facility, but it was slightly out of date and not very useful to begin with. It told him the names of the areas, but they were all a step removed from what they actually were. 'Vault 3' didn't tell him what was in the vault, just that it was a vault, and being told that it was specifically for artifacts with negative auras that had to be held in a nullifying containment field was far more useful. Those were the sort of details he needed, and nothing short of an honest to goodness tour was going to give him that information.
When Naos began to stare at the cat, Mikhail hesitated, eyes sliding up to it again. He wasn't sure what to make of it, and he hesitated with a frown. "I'm not sure. I guess... leave it for now. I don't think it'll go anywhere." Which would later prove to be wrong, and get him relocated to a newer enclosed office. "Should we go then?"

words | 266 | The boy patiently waited for Mikhail's decision, and he nodded happily when it came. Leaving it was not a problem for Naos as, again, it wasn't his responsibility in the end. He didn't really care what happened to it and he wasn't going to bother pretending that he did. Surely if the cat was fine for however long it had been in its crate alone, then it would be just fine alone on top of a bookcase. If it did muster up the boldness to hop down and destroy something, then he imagined someone else in the building would take care of it. There were enough trained people wandering the building for it not to be a problem, right?
Right, who cared. "Sounds good, let's go then!" The teenager motioned for Mikhail to follow him. As he did, he was contemplating the best possible route to take someone on the tour. It would be most efficient to start at the top or bottom, and then work from right to left on each floor. Or maybe left to right? No, no, it was best to start the other way around, definitely.
"We'll start at the entrance, since I think there are a lot of useful places on the lower floors that are good to know. Then we'll just work our way over and up from there. That would be the most thorough way to handle it, and also the most time efficient." And with that, they were off. This wasn't what he had been expecting, but at least it would be somewhat productive for both of them. |
