She looked really confused by his state of confusion, and had to go back over her words to see if she had said anything strange. (Which was entirely possible, since she didn't always think about what would leave her mouth.) She then realized that running out of money when she had just said she had a job didn't really make sense at all. She gave an awkward little cough before quickly clarifying with "It's a nonprofit organization." She didn't actually make any money. She only got decent meals because Blair taught at a school nearby--that and because of the charitable donations they had received. But funds were low, and she couldn't afford to stay there any more. So she had to raise up more money; and working for it felt much better than just asking her parents for it.
"Aaah no roommate either? Don't you get lonely?" She gave an admittedly over dramatic sigh. "I'd be so lost on my own...quite literally. Would have been kidnapped like a month ago without my roommate." Not to mention she wouldn't be able to afford rent--not that she was using Emily to pay for rent or anything. Emily was used to living in bigger cities, though, so she was really helpful. (Especially since Josie had spent most of her life out in the country.) And since this guy was from Tokyo, he was probably used to big cities too. And while she had lived in a fairly big city in Japan, she couldn't even begin to compare it with LA; the situations were so different, and she rarely went anywhere on her own in Japan so she never had to worry about anything.

tagged: josie. time: may 5th, 5pm. notes: none. Oh! A nonprofit. He understood that at least. That would certainly explain it, and it had eased away his confusion. He even gave her a small smile, happy he wasn't a complete idiot. So he wasn't terribly obvious, he just hadn't known all the details. Well, that was fine. He hadn't ever considered working for a nonprofit either, but he knew enough about them to understand what was going on.
He gave a little shrug. "Not really. It's a small apartment. I don't think there'd be room for others." But it wasn't entirely true--he was a bit lonely. He didn't really have any friends in Los Angeles just yet, and the closest thing he had to an online friend was on an almost completely opposite timezone. Jun Shi wasn't just someone he could call up to chat either.
"I think I'm fine living on my own, really. It's still good to go out and meet people, but I'm fine on my own. I can cook and clean and all that." His parents had made sure he knew how to do it all before letting him go anywhere. Anything he hadn't known a year ago they'd trained into him before they even considered letting him go to LA. "I might have a roommate in the fall, when I start school. I don't know yet." Or more than likely he'd have some suitemates, even if he didn't directly share a room with them. That was probably better--he didn't want anyone damaging his instruments.

What an independent kid. But it kind of made sense: she could only assume he was a freshman, and starting college was a really exciting thing. Not only that, but he was leaving his home country as well. So she understood why he felt like he was fine on his own. And, honestly, she didn't doubt him. He seemed like a really responsible, really capable kid. She was a little worried, though, because even if he was fine on his own it didn't mean that he liked being alone. So she kind of hoped that he would find a roommate in the fall. A good one--not one of those psycho freshman year roommates that everyone gets stuck with. She didn't wish one of those on her greatest enemy.
She looked like she approved of what he said, though. "Glad you can take care of yourself~ I would have worried, otherwise." Then she had to pause, frowning for a moment. Was it weird to worry over someone you just met? From her perspective, not really. Her job consisted of worrying over people and trying to help them. But it might have been more weird to a college student, or really just about anyone else. She didn't really mind, though, because he probably already knew that she was weird. But she tried to transition out of it anyway, so that he didn't go home and skype his parents to tell them about the weirdo he met at the market today.
"So, Almighty Chef, what are you making tonight?" And could you teach me how to make this? she thought, looking down into her basket. Maybe she should have taken a few home ec classes...or at least bought a cookbook.

tagged: josie. time: may 5th, 5pm. notes: none. Keijiro actually hadn't considered what he was making. Mostly he was just going to grab a bunch of things, and then make whatever caught his fancy when he was back in his apartment. He picked through his basket, trying to come up with a suitable answer to her question. "I'm thinking..." He hesitated. What was easy enough to make? What did he have at home?
Ahh, that was it. He would have his maguro tomorrow. For now, he was feeling more like chicken "Oyakadon." He answered, and then unsure if she would know what that was, he clarified what that was. "Chicken and rice donburi." He assumed she knew what that was. "Relatively easy to make. I already have most of what I need--I need another bottle of mirin, and some chicken and I'll have it all." He didn't want to mention that he hadn't actually finished his last bottle of mirin--he'd fumbled and dropped it, leaving a giant mess and him without any more. It wasn't exactly easy to get, being found almost exclusively in Japanese markets. He'd come just to get it, and at the same time he'd almost forgotten it--he really should have just made a list.
"I need to pick up some chicken, but it's quite tasty." And really not found in Japanese food places. It wasn't the sort of food that the average American would be interested in, considering the grim name.
