rabbit - hearted I look around, but I can't find you If only I could see your face Instead of rushing towards the skyline I wish that I could just be brave I must become a lion hearted girl Ready for a fight Before I make the final sacrifice We raise it up, this offering We raise it up This is a gift, it comes with a price Who is the lamb and who is the knife? Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- She was bruised and battered, but she was in-tact. Emmeline later would feel an immense guilt. Upstairs, trapped with monsters, were a bunch of people. Not her. She’d gotten out, she was uninjured except for a few bruises from falling down the stairs, and was now leaving. She’d left them upstairs. Later that guilt would chew at her insides and make her lose sleep. But right now, all she could think of was getting out of that place and leaving it behind forever. At least she’d pulled that fire alarm. Help would arrive, and now she was going to get that door open. However, that wouldn’t be enough to keep the guilt away. Water fell from the ceiling and it wasn’t long before she was started to get soaked. The blood mixed with the water and threatened to send her sprawling, but she tried to stick to the dry parts of the floor. The door was finally within reach. Emmeline choked out a sob and fell to her knees when she reached it, shoving at the dead bodies serving as a sort of barricade. She grunted and groaned, trying to move the heavier bodies, already getting a little stiff, until the door was finally clear. Her knees hurt from hitting the ground too hard, so it was a little hard for her to scramble up to her feet, but she did it. Freedom was so close that she could taste it. A cawing noise made her jump and she turned her head in time to see a jet-black crow-raven-thing flying toward her. Emmeline had already dropped her tray to move the bodies, so she had to use her arms instead. The bird pecked at her and she whimpered, lashing out at it with one hand while protecting her face. Her hair and scalp would have to go without protection. But, just as quickly as it had come, it left, disappearing into the floor where her small shadow rippled. Panting, Emmeline leaned forward and patted at the floor, panic making her do strange things. It was almost like she was looking for the bird, or the spot that the bird melted into the floor, but she wasn’t going to find it. A second later she got her wits back and finished standing up. The door was heavier than she remembered, but she got it open. And was bathed in sunlight. Emmeline didn’t care that tears were going to start flowing. She was out. She could start putting this whole thing behind her. It was too short a time for anyone important to show up, but a single squad car had started to pull up. Emmeline knew she should stay and make a statement or something, but her mind was still in run, run away! mode. So that’s what she did. The girl ran, covered in ink and blood from the bodies she’d pushed aside. She had planned to run all the way home, but was chased down by a cop. A cop in much better shape than she was. He grabbed her and she screamed before collapsing. When she realized it was just a police officer, and not a big ink monster, she explained everything. How much of it was actually intelligible she didn’t know, but at least the cop didn’t treat her like she was the culprit. Her therapist was going to need a raise after this one. |
