"No, don't say that," Donovan denied, looking a quite put off by the idea of being a celebrity more so than ever, the flattery causing Donovan to back up a few steps. But he was sure Neil was joking, which is why he didn't take off completely. "Nobody even listens to radio, as far as I can tell. I don't think I'd be comfortable doing it if more people were tuning in." Maybe that was why he was so insistent on not looking at the numbers, it was easy enough to pretend that the audience didn't exist when they couldn't be seen. "I broadcast in the middle of the night, nobody's even awake at those times." Except him and whatever insomniacs out there. It was a perfect job, kept him out of the apartment while his roommate was actually getting sleep.
Listening to the other man recite the Bill Monroe lyrics, Donovan finished the next few lines with light humming. He was impressed, but wasn't about to shove a list of recommendations for further listening at him. "It's a good choice."
"Did you ever give your name?" Donovan asked after trying to recall, looking slightly confused if he might have missed it. He had the tendency to be rather bad with names.

It was interesting to hear him mention that nobody listened to radio. The thought that one might enter an industry that they had no potential for growth or expansion seemed rather jarring to him. But he supposed that was what passion could sometimes do. You ended up knowing that you might lock yourself into a dead-end, but you pushed forward anyway. He would say that passion was 99% struggling and strife.
"You'd be surprised. Late at night is when the average college student thrives, after all." Now that was a potential target market for them. "Or someone on a long, long drive. Imagine being alone on a highway late at night. People like you keep people like them from falling asleep at the wheel!"
Was this starting to get weird. Maybe. Okay, yeah, probably a little more than maybe. Neil chuckled. "Don't worry about it. I did, but I'll do it again. I'm Neil." He wasn't going to explain that his full name was Neelanjan, but hey.
"It was nice meeting you, Donovan."

If there's one thing that nobody ever excused Donovan of being, it was ambitious. In fact, his complete lack of concern with advancing his career or becoming any form of socially or financially successful had the man seeking easy-going and minimally-paying jobs to avoid the pressure of expectations. The job at the radio station had only been convenience, something his roommate set him up with through whatever connections so he could keep paying his share of the bills. So he'd never be able to afford his own house, or a car, but Donovan wasn't sure his personal happiness was measured in obtaining such things. For all his troubles, Donovan was perfectly secure and content with how little he'd achieved. Success seemed directly proportional to the level of daily stress, and it didn't seem like a worthwhile tradeoff.
He fell silent, gaze wandering from Neil and staring somewhere past him in space instead, because he was meeting that place in almost every conversation where he was quickly running out of anything to say even as the other carried on. Where he was retreating back into his own thoughts than extending too much attention. He almost missed the man's second introduction, blinking back to awareness. "Neil," Donovan repeated a bit to himself, as if trying to commit it better to memory. But he wasn't likely to see the other man again, so it seemed a wasted effort. "Yes," he agreed, a bit awkwardly, not sure if Neil was using nice as a formality or as a way to spare Donovan's feelings. "I..." Donovan gave a delayed smile, "should probably. Go." And without waiting for a proper goodbye, Donovan turned on his heel and quickly began shuffling away, feeling incredibly stupid in embarrassed how he could mess up such a simple conversation.

Donovan wasn't a bad person. In fact, there was something very interesting about him. Not the kind of person who Neil would normally keep as company; but then again, there weren't many people that Neil enjoyed keeping as company in the first place. It was a fascinating once-off meeting, however. Not the type that would come to anything. He thought briefly about asking for a contact number or something, but decided against it.
What were the chances, anyway? This was probably just one of those things where they would meet once, but their encounter would never amount to much more than just a simple interaction.
Not that it was a bad thing. Neil wasn't a particularly social person, even if obligations sometimes required him to be. But he had to admit that he wasn't awful. The man in front of him, though, was a different story. The brunette raised a brow as he watched the man practically stutter. "You okay?" he begun, but before he could say anything more, Donovan had darted into the crowd--
"Whoa, you okay?" he hollered, but the other male was practically gone.
"Huh. That was an experience."
