ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. She didn't know how to describe what she has been feeling lately, this itch to go out and to do something. It was an unfamiliar feeling, this odd urge... if it had been Allison's nature to wreck havoc just for the heck of it, she would have recognised it for what it was: the compulsion for a spot of trickery. There had been some rumours about a haunted place in the mountains, And interestingly enough, she thought that Callum would be someone good for that sort of adventure. So she texted, naturally.
Heard there's a haunted mansion up in Santa Monica Mountains. I want to check it out tonight. You up for it? But if you're not, I'd understand.
She had a hunch that putting it as a subtle challenge would get her what she wanted. Ghosts had been a childhood fascination, the thought of someone leaving a residue after their death was a riveting concept. Then after she reached her teenaged years and lost her father, she often wondered if her father left a bit of himself behind. It was an easy crunch to fall back onto. Sometimes, she really did believe it, the wash of deja vu and the feeling that she was not exactly alone and was with someone she knew from before, even though she was alone in her room. She wasn't one to be afraid of the supernatural, her imagination was not that impressive that she could conjure fear for herself with over-thinking.
Callum had replied quickly with a short and sweet "On it. Meet downstairs at 9?". Her lips had curled into a half smile when the text came in but no one else will know. When it was time, Allison arrived on the dot, dressed in a soft black sweater with blue jeans and dark knee-high boots. She was armed with water, flashlights and some home-made food for a nice supper after the adventure, all of which were going in her speciality food storage boxes in the back of her car. Well, as soon as Callum arrived.
The blonde was still nowhere to be seen.

Allison's text had come at 1:30 in the afternoon, after which Cal had decided that he was going to marathon Young Justice while texting someone or other. Fast forward to 5:30, and he had fallen asleep with his laptop still on, Dick Grayson angsting still playing on his computer screen.
It was 8:59 by the time Cal actually woke up.
"Fuck," he had muttered before darting out the door, not bothering to throw on anything decent. Okay, yeah, he was seeing Allison, but the last thing he wanted to admit was that he was late because he was getting ready. He wouldn't have minded if it was anyone else, but this was Allison he was talking about, and he didn't want her to think he was trying too hard. Besides, it was the effortless charm that wowed most people, so if he was actually going to have to run out of the house effortless... So be it. Girls valued authenticity, right?
Needless to say, Cal was not the most coherent at this hour. Which was why he showed up at the agreed spot two minutes late, holding two bags of Doritos with his hair in an utter mess, still wearing his glasses instead of contacts for once. For once he actually looked a little rumpled as he gave her a sheepish grin.
"Sorry I'm late," he said. Incoherent or not, he did take note that she had brought food. Of course she had brought food, she was Allison. The edibles were almost enough for him to marry her on the spot for. That, and she did look very cute in what she was wearing. Maybe the effortless thing hadn't been such a good idea, he thought as he realized that he was in just jeans, sneakers, and a baggy long-sleeved shirt, though it did show his collarbones which was a plus. "So shall we go get food-- I mean, go to my car before we go do some Ghostbusting?"
The loud growl from his stomach indicated that he had yet to eat dinner.

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. He was only a couple of minutes late and judging by the slight pillow creases on a cheek, someone had fallen asleep and woke up a little too close to 9pm. She stared. His golden blond hair was rumpled, he obviously didn't change judging from the unusual get up in a baggy long-sleeved shirt, and he had spectacles on. He was still cute. Maybe even cuter than before. She didn't know what to make out of that. To say that she was breathless would be over exaggerating but she definitely liked the change. It made him more real. Allison nodded, accepting his apology and then she had to smile wryly when his stomach announced its presence rather loudly. Plus with that slip of wanting to get food, she figured that he was definitely hungry and had slept past dinner. Good thing she had prepared some food but she wasn't going to let him eat in her car. Hell no.
"I actually think it would be a better idea to drive mine because of the food. I've got some stuff in the back of my car that I had prepared for supper. I figured that it would just only be far for me to bring some things to eat since I'm dragging you out to the mountains." Then she hesitated before speaking up, "Would it be okay if you ate later? I don't really allow food consumption in my car..."
It was something no one had even breached before and she wasn't about to let him start breaking her own rules despite how damn attractive she found him. She still had some dignity, okay? Allison quickly stuck out her hand which held a bottle of mineral water.
"You should have some water though, it'll help with the hunger pangs. We'll just quickly grab a small snack when we get there and maybe sit down for something for filling later, depending on the weather. But if you can't wait, I can get you some food now and we can hit the road a little later." | words UNKNOWN tags #OTP #haunted house notes date in denial |

"Yes. Please." Was he almost pleading when Allison mentioned something to eat? Because at this stage, he had no more of his dignity left. Then again, it was arguable that he never had much in the first place, especially not when it came to food. He took the bottle of water from her with a brief "Thanks", wordlessly uncapping the bottle and taking a sip. A hungry Cal was a Cal almost incapable of functioning like an ordinary human being.
"I can wait." He tried to smile, but was betrayed by yet another growl from his stomach. Now all of China knew he was hungry. Okay, maybe he couldn't really wait, but he didn't quite want to hold Allison up. "I mean, we can like. I can eat a pack of Doritos whenever we go to wherever. Yeah!" Curse his biological functions.
There was no protest about squeezing into her Mini Cooper unlike the last time. He didn't even argue with her about the no-eating rules in her car as he opened the door to the passenger seat, practically squeezing into the space that it allowed, scrunching himself up like a piece of paper. For a moment he almost looked like his own pet pug as he glanced up at Allison with a look that could only be described as forlorn, before he managed to squeeze out a more genuine-looking grin.
"So shall we go to food?" He was trying, he swore. It was just difficult not to want to fall over and cry when he was bunched up into a tiny box like this. That, and he was hungry. No time for flirting when he was in dire need of nourishment and food. Funny how he could normally forget to eat, but the very sight of Allison brought back memories of all the nice places they'd gone together, and along with that, hungurr.

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. He looked really uncomfortable in the small car. Allison had to keep herself from laughing as she realised that Callum, in many ways was just a regular guy. It was really refreshing and she was enjoying this different side of him. He looked as if he was boxed in, knees drawn to his chest. Sorry, she pretty much existed in a small person world.
"Callum, you can adjust the seat."
She watched him struggle a little, trying to manoeuvre in what little space he had at the moment and failing, before relenting with a tiny sigh and a small smile playing on her lips. "Here, let me help. Just lean back." Allison unbuckled her seat belt and actually reached over. She wasn't unaware of how close they were, all she had to do was to turn to face him and they could kiss. She found herself not exactly adverse to that and she pinked slightly. She could smell a subtle cologne that was pleasant as she curled her fingers around the lever and pulled. The seat slid back and she actually turned to ask softly.
"That okay? Or do you want to have a little more leg space?"
His "okay" didn't quite answer her question and she took in widened greys behind dark frames. Allison was a little stunned herself but she reiterated herself. She didn't think the 'deer caught in headlights' look could work for a guy. It was probably because he could pass for a girl if he had the right make-up and angle. She had to stop herself and focus on the task at hand, which was making him comfortable.
"Currently okay or want more leg space okay?"
It was weird, unfamiliar but she found him oddly kissable that very moment.

It was funny that she had seen him as far from normal up to this point, because in his experience, that was how most perceived him. Infallible, untouchable, someone with a perpetual smile and a laugh. It was common sense that he too would be sad, that he wasn't immune to emotions, but it was just a side of him that most people would never get to witness. Besides, it was definitely nice in its own way to have his chance to act like a sad puppy.
His hand shot over to adjust the toggle stick of the seat upon her instruction, and he nudged it up and down, sharp features contorting into a rather flustered expression as he struggled. It was then when Allison suggested that she was going to help. "No, it's okay," he started. "No big deal--"
But then she leaned over towards him, faces almost close enough to kiss.
Whoa. Whoa there. Easy. Cal found himself turning slightly pink as her fingers wrapped around the lever, mind filling with thoughts. Okay, okay. Calm down. What was even going on with this? He took a deep breath. Easy, Cal. Easy. But he said nothing as she pushed the lever back, only able to mutter an, "Okay," as she asked him whether he was comfortable.
"I mean, yeah. I'm currently okay." He hadn't even realized that he didn't need to scrunch himself up any more at this point. So Cal stretched his legs, shaking them slightly as he nodded. Whoa, what had just happened? He wasn't sure, but he had a feeling that he liked it.
"So. Haunted house. We could eat on the porch. Or something." Yeah.

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. Well, that had been the only blimp in otherwise a comfortable car trip. Though she did sneak a few side glances at his profile. Maybe she should have kis— No. She was not going down that way. Callum thankfully distracted her by asking questions and they listened to music; it didn't take them long to get to the house in question. They alighted and she was about to ask him about food when she realised that he forgot about hunger with the excitement of exploring.
The house looked suitably creepy, shadowed and seemingly abandoned. It was going to be an experience, definitely. Good or bad, it was still unknown. Allison could feel mischief bubbling in her again. The feeling was getting more familiar but it wasn't getting any less odd. She was thinking of calling these windows 'Loki Moments'. Tom Hiddleston would appreciate it, bless his gorgeous English heart. Yes, that was something else not many people knew. Part of Callum's appeal was his nationality and hopefully that accent was going to surface in its entirety soon. She had to pause at how she was sounding in her head. Like a giggling school girl. Dear god, what was she turning into? Intent on going into the house, she dug out her flashlight and handed it to Callum, figuring that he would wanted to take lead on this.
"Come on, Christopher Columbus. Show me why we've got a national holiday in your name."

Once you had put the idea that Cal needed food into his head, there were few things that could make him forget it. One of them was the prospect of excitement, though, and as soon as they arrived at the haunted house he was absolutely ecstatic. He practically bounded out of Allison's car when they arrived, grinning from ear to ear as he noticed the house ahead of him. "Oh hot damn," he muttered.
This was going to be good. Good company, good prospects of adventure. He couldn't do any better than this.
All thoughts of the awkward moment that transpired between the two of them had disappeared as Allison passed him the flashlight. Cal grinned. "You got it, first mate." Oh, he could show the world why there was a national holiday in his name, all right. Too bad it wasn't PG-13 enough, or it was the kind of thing that belonged on the Discovery Channel ahem ahem yeah right.
That kind of comment did not belong between him and Aly-cat just yet, though. No, they had a mystery to solve. "Have any idea of who or what died in here?" he asked as he pushed the door open, a chill running up his spine as he heard a loud creak. Oh boy, this was going to be great. Somewhat nervously, he took a tentative step, noting the squeaking wooden floorboards and the shattered wooden pillars.
"My friends and I sometimes explore abandoned buildings together. I didn't know you were into this." There was no invitation to join, though. Not yet, at least. It was one of those things he liked to keep between him, Julie and Bailey, and he wasn't about to invite her. Cal usually liked it when some of his friends mingled, but he wasn't ready to share Allison with Julie just yet. There was something different about the entire relationship that he shared with Aly-cat, and he had a feeling that Julie would see it as quickly as he had. She still hadn't gotten her revenge on him for teasing her about Colin, and it had been a few years. Julie was probably planning.

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. He seemed too excited to remember anything else and she had to smile inwardly at the almost childish glee on his face. But he definitely looked nowhere childish. Oh, far from it.
"I heard it was a woman who was killed by her philandering husband after the accidental death of her child. Her ghost was offered no rest and she haunted her husband, turning him against everyone around him because he was coming across as crazy when he tried to tell people what was happening to him." Her voice was solemn and soft as she focused intently on telling the tale behind the house, "He eventually pointed a gun in his mouth and blew his brains out. That was two hundred years ago. Three families moved in here, all three of the husbands died because they strayed. She's not a very big fan of playboys." Allison paused before continuing her tale. "Apparently the first sign of her presence is the sound of heels clicking against the floorboards."
Now, little did Cal know, Allison had a prerecorded clip on her iPhone of that very same noise that she had just described. All she needed was the right moment to play it. Tonight was going to be a very interesting experience.

"Whoa there."
Cal could already feel his family jewels being threatened as Allison recounted the horrifying tale. His mind flashed back to the various people he'd slept with in the past. Did that make him a playboy? Sort of, kind of? Not really. He was quite sure that he hadn't cheated on anyone-- okay, maybe in high school, but he wasn't sure if that had actually been cheating. Did this ghost actually look through your romantic history? Naww. They would have no way of knowing.
Their ghostly powers didn't really extend that far. Or did they. Crap. Why did he even care?
"So do you actually believe that this is out there?" Cal asked, not turning back as he addressed Allison. The blonde was too busy marching forward, torchlight darting around as he scanned the vicinity. "I won't lie, I... I'm not entirely sure about how I feel about ghosts." The prospect that something would be out there, a chance to venture into the unknown. Was his brother at peace, or was he floating for eternity?
Yeah, thinking about that was ground that he wasn't sure if he wanted to tread.
"I dunno. I'd like to think that once you die you die. Bam. Nothing." Sort of. Kind of. Part of him couldn't reconcile with the idea that everything he'd once known about Allen was gone, his very essence vanishing into nothingness. But it was the only thing that really made sense, scientifically at least. Cal frowned as he heard a loud thump.
"Did you hear that?" he asked, whirling around to face her this time.

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. "I'm not so sure whether I'd agree with you. Something must be left behind, be it memories or just even a presence in a place. I believe that's linked to a departed person's essence. A ghost of some one." She would hate to think that her father had completely left her behind in this world, even though she didn't quite believe in ghosts in the most literal way. "I could also argue that there is negative energy from memories that has hatred, causing malicious apparitions. But I'm no expert," she gave him a one-shouldered shrug, "You could very well be right."
Her words were then followed by a rueful smile, "Though it's a little depressing to think that you'd leave no mark behind when you leave this plane. I'd like to think that at least something of me would be left behind. Not something grand like millions of dollars," Allison paused thoughtfully as they walked further into the house, with Callum shining the flashlight before them. "But perhaps a good memory. That'd be nice."
Then he whirled around and asked whether she had heard the thump? Of course she did and more importantly, she orchestrated its timing with her hand in the pocket where her phone was currently residing in. However, she rearranged her features into a puzzled expression, frowning slightly.
"Hear what?"

Shit. Okay. He'd heard the thump, she hadn't. This was not good. "Never mind," Cal said, deciding that it was probably best that he didn't talk much more about the ghostly sounds. No. Ghost didn't exist. They couldn't be explained by science. Then again, he'd once heard that if a great scientist said something was possible, they were probably right; but if a great scientist said that something was impossible, they were probably wrong. Not that he was a great scientist, but-- "Okay, shall we proceed?" he asked. No point dwelling on it too much.
"Anyway. Yeah. Ghosts. Uhh. I'm not sure. I guess part of me would kind of want something to be left behind. Then again, I feel like I'd be too dead to care. It doesn't matter what people remember me for when I'm dead, it's what I do when I'm alive that counts, right?" Cal asked, shooting Allison a sheepish grin. She was still there, at least. Nobody had died yet. Yet being the key word.
A loud scream pierced through the air, coming from right behind him. The blonde may have yelped a little as he spun around once more. "Allison?" he asked, looking about for her. "Allison!"

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. Okay, this was totally unlike her but this was also turning out to be totally fun. Callum might not share her sentiments as she disappeared into a corner as they ventured further into the dilapidated property, just as he was asking another question. She almost felt bad but she then pressed play, releasing the clip that housed a bloodcurdling scream that was amplified by a tiny speaker attached to her iPhone.
That wasn't a yelp. That was a legitimate scream from someone who was close to pissing his pants. Callum called out her name beseechingly but her plans were not finished. She pressed her screen again, this time it was the sound of heels clicking deliberately against wooden floors, just like the ones she had described to Callum about the signature of the female ghost that supposedly haunted the place. Allison held her breath and began walking towards Callum, who was easy to spot due to his frantically waving flashlight. She slowly made her way towards him, making sure that his back was always to her and reached out carefully.

Where... Was Allison?
He could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up as he glanced around the vicinity, a chill traveling up his spine with the realization that she was gone. She had disappeared. "Allison?" he hollered into the distance, but nothing. Nada.
"Look, if this is a practical joke, this really isn't very funny." But was that doubt in his voice? A certain level of uncertainty? Okay, it had to be a joke. To be fair, if he was the one playing this joke on Bailey or something, it would have been absolutely hilarious. Yeah. It had to be a joke. Cal managed to force a small smile as he glanced around, flashing his torch around the vicinity. Empty chairs and empty tables. No Allison in sight.
"Allison?" Cal hollered once again.
He was still greeted by the sound of silence.
Shit. Shit shit shit. His pulse was beginning to race, and he could feel his heart crashing repeatedly into his ribcage as an uneasy sensation crept up into his stomach. Not butterflies, but snakes. Snakes, twisting and turning and hissing for him to turn back, go home, because ssssssomething was out there and it was out to get him. "I can't leave her alone in here," he muttered. If she was gone, she wouldn't hear him say that, so he was fine, right? The sound of the clicking heels in the distance didn't help, either. "Fuck," he mumbled underneath his breath.
"Allison, where are you?" he called into the distance.
Nothing.
The cold, clammy grip of a hand on his shoulder.
"Aaaaah!" Cal exclaimed as he whirled around once more, grabbing hold of the person's wrists. Oh. Okay. It was Allison. He pulled the girl in close, eyes meeting hers. "Dude, that scared the shit out of me," he muttered.

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. So she had totally expected the exclamation (scream) but Allison never did once think that she would be pulled against a solid body as she attempted to scare the pants off of a person. Her breath caught in her throat and the smirk died on her lips. She could feel the tension in his frame, pulled taut with adrenaline, and the staccato beat his heart was hammering against his ribcage. They were that close. His greys were dark under furrowed blond brows and she had to swallow nervously, all thoughts of her pranks fleeing her mind. It took her a moment to suck in quick breath, collect her wits and murmured, "... what kind of person pulls in a ghost?" She wasn't a ghost per say but the logic was there. By all means, he should be running in the opposite direction, instead of turning around to look. Allison was reminded of a particular vine. White people. Was this supposed to be vaguely romantic, pulling her close to him after he thought he'd almost lost her? "Thank god you're okay," Cal muttered as grey eyes met browns. "I'm so glad you're fine. Oh my god," he said, his voice coming out in a hushed whisper. "Dude, I thought I'd lost you. After all that talk about ghosts that we'd been having earlier on, I would have thought that..."
It was then that Allison spoke, her gaze darkening as she muttered the words.
And that was when Cal let out The Most Piercing Shriek in the World.
It was like a banshee had fornicated with a hyena and then crossbred with a siren, and then yelled at the top of its lungs. It was probably karma for all the mutant creatures he'd created in his and Bailey's kitchen. The blonde howled once again at the girl's words, before turning away and running straight in the other direction. Nope, he was not dealing with this. Not today, not tomorrow, not the day after either. The sound of his footsteps clicking, thundering against the floorboards was almost definitely enough to raise the dead.
YOLO? Yeah. No. Okay, after this he was never going to diss the dead ever again. Ever. Again.

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. If there was one thing she gleaned from this experience, it would be that Callum can scream. Bloody hell, he can scream. Allison widened her eyes at the unexpected turn. She had just been questioning his actions and not impersonating a ghost. She was flesh, for god's sake. He had pulled her flush against him! She pinked slightly at the memory and went after the fleeing blond. Why was it starting to feel like a B-grade horror movie? With a really dumb blonde.
There was a stab of guilt, she hadn't meant to take it that far but the itch within her to raise mischief was satisfied. For the time being. Allison was beginning to worry a little... the way he had screamed... the decibels really did convey the amount of terror he had felt. She didn't even think she could have matched the pitched if she tried. Then she realised that he hadn't run out of the house.
Cue crickets chirping awkwardly in the background

Oh god, that had been a terrifying ghost, he thought as he continued to speed off. One that had looked a hell lot like Allison. Unless Allison was actually a ghost? Shit, maybe that was why she'd been alone at the party. Had people been giving him weird looks when he was there? Then again, people always gave him weird looks. That wasn't anything new. It all made sense now. She wasn't real, he'd made her up, that was why she'd been everywhere. Even at his house. All that food she'd been feeding him was probably ghostly offerings from the other realm--
Wait a minute. That didn't make sense. The blonde froze in his tracks.
How would a ghost cook human food?
So... That had been Allison. She had been real. Grey eyes widened as it slowly dawned upon him that it had been nothing but a prank. She'd played a prank on him, and he'd been completely fooled. "Holy shit," he muttered under his breath as he whirled back around, eyes darting around the vicinity to search for Allison. He called out into the distance once again.
"Okay. Game's up. Game's up." She had been so warm when she'd pressed herself against him, come to think of it. His footsteps were slower, more labored now, and he felt a squirming feeling return to his stomach. Only it was a different squirm. Shit, she probably thought that he was some sort of idiot now, he thought. But he couldn't help but chuckle a little as he palmed his face.
"Allison, get out here. You had me totally fooled."

ATARAXIA (n.)calmness or peace of mind. Well, the gig's up and she knew when to surrender when the situation called for it. Allison stepped closer and announced her presence by speaking up. She wouldn't want to give him another heart attack, wouldn't she? It was more like her ears couldn't take another round of his vocalisation of his terror but she didn't tell him that.
"I do try my best." She was trying really hard not to laugh. Keep cool, Allison, keep cool. But when she remembered the horrified expression and the almighty scream, she lost it. Laughing, she shook her head as she tried to rein in her laughter but to no avail. It was just too funny.
"You should have seen your face! Oh my god," her shoulders quaked with effort, "I'm so sorry." Well, not really. But you get the gist. She was pretty sure he knew how to appreciate a good prank. Allison wouldn't be surprised to find out that he was the instigator of many himself. It did take her a while to calm down and she sighed while she wiped away a tear or two.
"I haven't had that good of a laugh in a while."
Her cheeks were tinged pink with mirth and her eyes shone as serotonin surged through her body with the laughter. It always did felt good to have a good spell of hilarity. | words it's a mystery tags #challenge notes cal screaming like a girl |

A grin spread across his face just as it did so with hers, the corners of his eyes crinkling with glee along with the upturned edges of his lips. Cal let out a chuckle a second after she did, his tenor following her alto like two notes within a song.
And then she laughed.
First once, then twice. Soon Allison had clenched hold of her sides, doubled over with peals of laughter as she shook her head, gasping for breath, her laughs escaping her lips like a symphony of song. Hardly graceful, hardly genteel, but for a moment he couldn't help but feel as though this was the most genuine he'd seen her for their time of acquaintance. By now the grin on his face had stretched so much that his cheeks were beginning to hurt, and he joined in soon enough, their voices blending, melding into an echo that reverberated around the halls of the abandoned house, the haunted rooms, filling the emptiness of the four walls with some semblance of what might have once been a home.
"T- that was fantastic."
Cal practically hollered the words as he shook his head, palming his face once again. It had been a prank of the greatest degree. "I can't believe I actually fell for that. I guess... I guess I'm more superstitious than I thought. Than I-- than I pretend to be," he admitted, the last words spilling out unwittingly, almost unconsciously.
"I'm glad to have been the one to make you smile?" he mused, taking a step closer towards her. The devilish grin never left his features. "I'm going to have to pay you back for this."
