Aw, shit, he noticed.
She couldn't help but wince as he turned his attention on her- we she really such an open book? Then again, she hadn't really tried to hide it- she didn't really try to hide much of anything from him, actually. He stepped closer to her and told her it was fine, they were fine. She could stop agonizing over whether she had said the right thing or not.
For a second, she wondered if he really meant what he said- if he was just saying these things for the sake of saying them. Kris took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. No, she'd trust him. He wouldn't lie about something like this. He really, truly wasn't mad at her. "Okay." A relieved smile spread across her face, and she squeezed his hand for a moment before continuing along. She was just so glad he wasn't mad-
Her face blanched at the mention of T Swift and 1D, though. "You wouldn't." She said, horrified, as she turned to look at him, eyes wide in disbelief. What kind of friend would do something like that, even if he was mad at her- that was just- "Please, anything but that."
And then, without any warning, they were finally there. Kris blinked in surprise; that had taken a surprisingly long amount of time... or did it just feel that way? Either way, she blamed Neil. This was definitely all his fault. She turned to grin at him as she said, cheerfully, "And here's where your hand holding tyranny ends." And with that, she pulled her hand free. At long last, freedom! It's been far too long!

She was okay.
Neil felt a smile spread across his face as she took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. She was okay, he hadn't messed up, he hadn't done something bad, or wrong, or worse still, stupid. "Thank goodness," he said in a low voice as the two of them continued to walk towards the store. "You had me worried for a minute there, you know?"
"And I told you I wouldn't. I care, so I wouldn't play that stuff at your funeral." Ah, the horrified expression on her face made all of this completely worth it. He couldn't help but feel a pang of something as they took a step into the cafe though. Definitely not a good emotion. Something cold, something clammy, something almost sad-- was this disappointment? Perhaps it was, or perhaps he was getting in over his head. "But let's put it this way," Neil chuckled, deciding that he wasn't going to think about it. "Let's put it this way--"
"You probably haven't seen the last of this."
With that, Neil walked up to the counter, flashing his credit card.
"Her drink is on me, sir!"
