[atrb=valign, top] ❝ I NEVER KNEW DAYLIGHT COULD BE SO VIOLENT ❞ It was still early when Tsuyu finally arrived at the base of the Cucamonga Peak hiking trail. The sun was only beginning to rise and shine upon the Los Angeles area and there were few people around the difficult trail. The light haired male parked his car and looked up at the strenuous trail. The hike was nearly twelve miles long out-and-back and had a top elevation of nearly 9,000 feet. Tsuyu smiled himslf at the thought. It had been sometime since he had been able to get out and go for a long hike and he was looking forward to clear mountain air and the calmness of being (away from his step-mother) in nature.
Tsuyu exited his car, stretched, and grabbed his hiking equipment from the trunk. He brought only the very basic materials needed for hiking. Although it was always better to be prepared, Tsuyu liked to travel light. And to be truly honest, he reveled in the challenge that perhaps he might get lost and be forced to survive with only what he had. It was an idiotic thought, he knew. But an adrenaline junkie such as him needed to get thrills anyway he could.
With his backpack and supplies all set and checked, his clothing and hiking boots in good condition, and his twin notified of his whereabouts, he was ready to set out on his hike. Tsuyu walked to the base of the trail and briefly wondered if he should find someone’s group to join. Walking alone, while enjoyable some times, could also be lonely at other times. Tsuyu looked around and spotted a person near the base of the trail. Without thinking much about whether the person needed companionship from him, he immediately walked up to them and struck up a conversation.
”Excuse me, are you going up the trail?”

tagged: Alec. time: May 1st, 2012. 6AM. speech: Oskenón:ton. notes: - - -. Some days, he could not sleep. No matter how much he tossed and turned in bed, everything remained quiet and slow and he found that his mind started picking and ticking at trivial things. So that night, when he found himself staring at the ceiling of the hostel with nothing in his head but thoughts of Haida Gwaii and the sea, he thought that maybe going for a walk would help.
So he went on a walk, because he could. He walked and walked until he came upon a trail, and that trail lead to another trail and on and on. He supposed just walking cleared his head, because it gave him outside stimulation other than just the thoughts in his head and the dark and the breathing of the strangers in the room with him. It was actually very early, and he caught a fair glimpse of the sun just starting to come up as he hiked through to the base of yet another trail.
A sign at the front said ‘Cucamonga Peak’, so he supposed he could finally put a name on it. He stood there for several long moments, just mulling the whole fact over. How far had he gone, anyways? He wasn’t exactly prepared for hiking, though he had his tomahawk on him, as well as his bone knife. He was generally fit for hiking, anyways, having spent a good ninety percent of his life outdoors and the other ten percent indoors but wanting out.
He thought he was alone, too, up until the point where somebody came up behind him. He sincerely thought he was the only one on the trails this early, but perhaps not. ”Oh, um… I suppose I am?” He gave a little shrug. ”I mean, didn’t plan it or anything, but it’s right here so I might as well.”

[atrb=valign, top] ❝ I NEVER KNEW DAYLIGHT COULD BE SO VIOLENT ❞ Well that certainly was not the answer he expected. Then again, what kind of answer did he expect when it came to this? Putting the thought behind him, Tsuyu continued in his pursuit of finding someone to join him on the trail. ”Do you want to join me? I’m alone right now but I figured that it’d be more fun if there was someone to keep company.”
Tsuyu had to admit that he was excited to have met such a person to join him in his hiking endeavors. Tsuyu himself packed only the very basic supplies but this man seemed to have bested him. The stranger before him, carried even less than he had and the only visible equipment Tsuyu noticed on him at first glance was the tomahawk at his side.
”It’s alright if you don’t want to but if it’s okay then follow me. I want to get a head start before the tourists start arriving,” Tsuyu said with a bit of disdain. Granted, he too could probably be considered a tourists but he really wished that the trails of Los Angeles did not have so many people hiking them at one time. There was hiking with people for company which wasn’t that bad and then there was hiking on crowded paths which was horrible, in his opinion.
Without waiting to see if the stranger had followed, Tsuyu walked to the base of the trail and began to make his way into the woods. He would soon know if he had company or not. Either way was fine but he had to admit that he really hoped he had company. | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=valign, top][atrb=style, width:300px, btable] ❝ Oskenon:ton ❞ ❝ 01 May 2012❞ ◤

tagged: Alec. time: May 1st, 2012. 6AM. speech: Oskenón:ton. notes: - - -. The trail winded up beyond his sight, and he stared up at it, following the trotted down path until he couldn’t see it anymore around the bend. It was quite nice without so many people around, but there was no doubt that there would be more coming later in the day. He hadn’t walked and intended to come out early enough that people weren’t there, and he hadn’t even gone out with the intention of a hike; he just wanted some time to think.
But an invitation to join wasn’t exactly going to be turned down. In fact, he was rather curious about the trail, and the boy might’ve known more than he about it. Well, surely he did, because Oskenón:ton was a newcomer and not at all a local. He didn’t even plan on staying long, anyways.
Either way, before he could even answer, the boy was off towards the trail already. So he was eager to go hiking, and he looked like he’d packed for it. Meanwhile, Oskenón:ton hadn’t packed anything at all, minus his knife and his tomahawk. Most of the time, he honestly felt that it was all he needed.
He paused a second before following behind the boy with white hair, keeping step with him soon enough. ”How difficult is this trail?” He wasn’t too concerned, but it was good to know, anyways. But of course, he didn’t know the kid’s name at all. Even if they were walking, he did find some time to be polite. ”Ah, my name is Oskenón:ton. Should’ve introduced myself earlier.” He stuck out his hand, offering a mild smile in greeting.

[atrb=valign, top] ❝ I NEVER KNEW DAYLIGHT COULD BE SO VIOLENT ❞ Tsuyu was not sure whether or not the man would follow after his impromptu invitation but was rather pleased when he turned around to see the man come up the trail behind him. Not only that, the man matched his pace meaning that he would not have to slow down for inexperienced or weak hikers. This trip seemed like it was going to be pleasant, Tsuyu decided.
”This trail is ranked as one of the more difficult trails,” Tsuyu answered the man. ”It’s one of the tallest peaks in the area. I think it goes up like 9000 feet above sea level, or something like that,” the white hair boy shrugged. He was never one for specifics. If it was new and or exciting, he’d try it.
Tsuyu took the man’s hand in his own when offered the greeting. ”I’m Tsuyu,” he said with a returning smile. “I’m glad to see I’m not the only one with an interesting name. So where are you from? I’ve never heard of a name like that before.”
Tsuyu looked eagerly at the man. His new friend was an interesting one. He wondered what kind of stories this man told. He looked to be older than Tsuyu and in Tsuyu’s experience, as long as he was not being berated by them, the older generation could be rather interesting to talk to. . | [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=valign, top][atrb=style, width:300px, btable] ❝ Cross ❞ ❝ 29 April 2012 10:00AM ❞ ◤

Realistically, that meant little to Oskenón:ton other than being a very large number and, he supposed, meant a lot of pressure on his ears. He never hiked before because he took it up as a hobby or anything, because really, he did enough walking as it was. But difficulty was easy to figure out in his head, and he stared straight ahead towards where they seemed to be going. It didn’t look that bad right off the bat, but looks were easily deceiving, he supposed.
”Tsuyu. Never heard that one before.” He was aware enough that it might’ve been from Japan, but the boy definitely didn’t look the part. Perhaps he was a mix of some sort, or was adopted. Either way, he wasn’t exactly one to judge and just let it go. As for where he was from, Oskenón:ton was always happy to answer that. The smile on his face grew by a small fraction.
”I’m from Haida Gwaii, if you’ve ever heard of it. It’s up in Canada.” That little island he was born on and raised on, surrounded by sea, until just a couple of years ago when he packed up and explored the world. Still, his heart remained firmly anchored on that little island. ”You might know it a bit better as the Queen Charlotte Island, though.

Not many people had and sadly, if they had they not only knew that it was Japanese but that it was actually a girl’s name so Tsuyu just let that one slide. It was not like he disliked his name but he certainly did not need any more teasing for having traditionally female name. He had enough of that in his childhood.
”Haida Gwaii? Tsuyu repeated the foreign words. Tsuy frowned a bit. ”Queen Charlotte Island… No, I can’t say I have heard of it although the name does sound familiar. I’m not very familiar with geography outside of Japan and the United State unfortunately. And even then, United States geography still confuses me from time to time,” the white hair male explained. ”I grew up in Japan so a lot of common knowledge in the West escapes me.”
Tsuyu smiled again and turned back to the man. ”But enough about me. I’d much rather hear about you. I’m sure you have some stories to tell. It’s not every day you meet someone with a tomahawk after all. So you’re from Haida Gwaii? tagged: Alec. time: May 1st, 2012. 6AM. speech: Oskenón:ton. notes: - - -. A lot of people didn't know where the Queen Charlotte Island was, and even less knew that it was also called Haida Gwaii. Well, that was to be expected, he supposed. Tsuyu not knowing didn't come to him as much of a surprise, and neither did his admitting that he had little knowledge of geography outside of, he assumed, where he'd grown up and where he now lived. Still, it was nice to know that the boy was interested in the place; so few seemed to even care that it existed, after all.
"Well, I grew up on an out of the way reservation there. It was practically on the water, and it was sort of lonely, but it was a really nice place. If you're interested in the outdoors and didn't mind working for what you got, it would be rather perfect." And it had been perfect for him, even if his family straddled the thin line of poverty at every turn. They made a living with what they had, fishing and hunting and all that. The sea had been his babysitter and on more nights than one, he'd just sat outside and listened to the waves in the early morning, or gone canoeing or something that involved not being under roof.
"Not a lot of people are interested in the little island, though." That one was said with the faintest air of melancholy, but he didn't let it linger for too long. Haida Gwaii would more often than not stay a bit of a chunk of land off the west coast of Canada, but it was still home to him, whether people knew about it or not.

Although he had not heard of Queen Charlotte Island he could appreciate the outdoors and actively moving and working for what you had. His parents may be rich but once upon a time, Tsuyu too lived modestly because he had next to nothing. His adopted parents from Japan were retired and did not have much to give the two not that they could truly accept. They were outsiders, after all.
”That sounds wonderful,” Tsuyu said with a smile. ”The city has its excitements but being in nature also sounds amazing. I mean, I have to admit other than camping I’ve never truly lived in nature. It still sounds fun though. That’s why I hike. It’s nice to get away from everything once in a while.”
Tsuyu chuckled. ”Well I can’t say I’m too surprised. People are selfish. I am too if you think about it.” To say that Tsuyu was honest was being generous. If anything, he just had a very tiny verbal filter, especially around those that he’s comfortable with. He spoke before thinking half the time and the few times that he did show restraint, he still allowed himself to let the other party know exactly what he was thinking.
”So if you’re from such an awesome island, what brings you to Los Angeles?”

tagged: Alec. time: May 1st, 2012. 6AM. speech: Oskenón:ton. notes: - - -. The conversation diverted his attention from the trail they were walking, which seemed to go a little steeper with each step. Really, he didn’t notice it much; a childhood full of climbing sand dunes and beach rocks tended to do that to a person. He could guess that unless they were going actual rock climbing, he wouldn’t notice it too much unless he was actually focused on the trail ahead. It was still early enough that not a lot of people were around, and he only assumed that the further up they climbed, the less people there would be anyways.
”I do miss living close to the outdoors, though.” A wishful smile at that, perhaps a little sad, but otherwise not too different than the usual longing he had for home. He’d be back on Haida Gwaii for perhaps a week about three times a year, just to visit family and see how things were at home. He technically could just go back any time he wanted, but his father always encouraged him to find what made him happy. He didn’t think he’d find it in a big city, though, and he’d already stayed in Los Angeles for longer than he anticipated.
Speaking of which… ”I’ve been travelling a while now. I’ve only been in Los Angeles for a couple weeks, actually.” He liked seeing places and meeting new people, but his heart was always firmly anchored on Haida Gwaii. ”Complications always come up while travelling, though. Sometimes I’m stuck in a place for a couple months at a time. I sort of planned on just passing through, but I guess not.” Just a couple days, he’d originally planned.

Tsuyu considered himself to be physically fit but there was no way he could compete with his new friend. How was it that the man was not was tired at all?
”You are amazing,” Tsuyu muttered under his breath.
Tsuyu frowned a bit at Oskenon:ton’s words. ”So you move every couple weeks?” The white haired male had not known the man very long but he had to admit he was a bit attached. It was nice listening to the man talk about his home island and the adventures that he has been on. Granted, he was the one that kept asking him questions but the older man did not seem averse to answering. To think that the man might be leaving soon was disappointing.
”You guess not? So are you staying in Los Angeles?” If only the puppy dog eyes still worked at his age; it’s unfortunate that they don’t.
”Want to go hiking together some other time then? My brother dislikes outdoor activities and I don’t really have anyone else to go with me. I usually just tag along with some random group. It’s better than going alone. What do you say? Wanna?”

tagged: Alec. time: May 1st, 2012. 6AM. speech: Oskenón:ton. notes: - - -. One of the things he did notice was that the air was thinner; he was used to living at sea level, so to speak, and he found himself a tad breathless. Still, his endurance was keeping up nicely, and he’d yet to feel sore, though he figured it would happen sooner than later with the thin air. He focused halfway on taking deeper breaths, getting more oxygen in as they climbed the trail. He made note of the various plants as they passed them, the trees and their uses, what was good to eat and what wasn’t… It came as second nature.
”I move whenever I feel like it. Sometimes I stay for a while, but not often.” Prince Edward Island had been his longest stay, at a couple months when he thought he’d found someone that was good for him and would make him happy. But that quickly fell through the cracks and broke apart, and he was on the plane by the next day. Some people would’ve called him a coward for just up and leaving, but he didn’t care too much.
”I wouldn’t say I’m staying in Los Angeles for long; I have work here, though, and it’d likely last me a while. It pays nicely, but it’s time consuming.” Some rich guy wanted a totem pole; a full size one, for some reason or another. He figured the job was fine, and he had no real reason to turn it down other than he didn’t like LA, and that wasn’t a good reason.
As for Tsuyu’s offer, he shrugged, but he was grinning. ”Sure, if you’ll have me. I have some more time in these parts on my hands.”

If there was one thing about Oskenon:ton that Tsuyu noticed was that he did not talk about himself much. There wasn't anything wrong with that: some people were just private individuals that spoke little about themselves. Still, the white hair male wondered what it would be like if Oskenon:ton did give more details into his life. Tsuyu knew that he traveled. But what did he do on his travels? Where has he been? Is he some sort of secret agent? Those were important questions that he was dying to have answered. Then again, Tsuyu talked more than enough for the both of them. Given the opportuinty and a topic that interested him (like math), the teenager could talk endlessly just to explain all the fine details of inverse trigonometry and the likes.
Sadly, as expected, the man confirmed that he would not be staying in Los Angeles. How long he was here could be debated however he would leave eventually. Tsuyu supposed he would just have to make the most of it until then. At least Oskenon:ton was willing to go hiking with him again. It was a nice change of pace.
Tsuyu could feel himself grinning back at him. "Awesome. There are quite a few good hiking trails in the Los Angeles area so we will never have a shortage of places to go."
"Also, I forgot to ask. Are you hungry? I have food and water in my backpack if you want to stop and eat. We're getting close to the midpoint and it's only going to get steeper from here. It shouldn't be too bad at this time of year but there is snow up there sometimes. WHat do you think?"
((I am so, so sorry. Feel free to beat me in retaliation. It would certainly make me feel better.))
