He always felt he had some kind of ability, and when he found his readings were fairly accurate, he opted to continue learning to read. His parents were open to it, and happy to see their son had a hobby of some sort. He did decently in high school, and had a few friends, all of them into the dark as well. Though he would never tell his friends, he loved the voice of Megurine Luka, and even died his hair the same colour as her's. He seemed like the average, if not Gothic, young man. Until the disease set in. Once the blindness began, Charles started to distance himself from his old life, even asking people to call him Reader, as opposed to his real name. His tarot soon became an obsession for him, the feel of the cards, if each one had it's own weight. He wanted to memorize as much as he could before he was no longer able to see. Reader is now a quiet man, one who barely speaks unless he has something to say. He is scared that at any moment, his vision could vanish. He is upset with the doctors for not being able to cure him and he is furious at his parents for never telling him this could happen. His interests still remain on his tarot, but his passion for life dried up long ago, he no longer talks to his friends. He spends most of his time outside work sitting around Los Angeles, listening to Vocaloid music, waiting for a call from either the hospital for a round of tests, or from his parents wanting to know how he was. His mother was a fashion designer, working for a large corporation. His father was a small time lawyer. They had met during a legal case between the Corporation and a seller on Etsy, who claimed copyright ownership over a design the Corporation held a claim over. The seller had dragged the battle to court and lost. Soon after, Reader's parents began to see each other casually, taking things slow at first. But eventually sparks flew, and on one fateful day in December, they were joined in holy matrimony. His mother considered it an omen that her boy was born on Halloween, being a bit of a spiritual person. His father brushed it off however, more concerned at what the doctors had to say about their boy's test results. He had been diagnosed with a rare congenital disorder where the immune system of his body would degrade his nerves and connective tissue for no known reason. Thankfully the responsible gene had not expressed itself yet, but it was present, like a time bomb with no visible timer. For the greater part of his life, Reader was never told of this... problem. He lived quite normally until a few days after his twentieth birthday. He had been out with his friends, when he realized he had difficulty seeing. It was as if a fog had settled over his eyes. He called his parents from the mall in a panic, and was shocked at how calmly they reacted to the news, as if they were expecting it. At Hope Hospital, his parents tried to explain that they had only kept it from him so he wouldn't worry, and could try to lead a normal life, without fear. Reader told them he would have rather known sooner, that way he could have been ready for when it happened. A few weeks into his treatments and tests, his aunt who had played a big role in Readers interest into the occult, presented her nephew with a set of tarot card with Braille. Reader took this as a sign that his vision would never return. He stopped going to school, and barely spoke to his friends. He wanted to be alone, safe for the few moments when he would perform a reading. His aunt had encouraged him to at least continue with it, as she hoped it might help Reader focus his attention outside his illness. He eventually got a part-time job working with a medium, assisting in readings, and occasionally taking on his own customers. They seemed to love the charm of a blind seer. He still works there, and the disease has still only affected his eyes. Currently he is still capable of seeing, thought it is a faded, black and white, foggy world he sees. Thankfully the progression of the disease is slowed thanks to a cocktail of immuno-suppressants; Cyclosporin being one of the biggest players. Sadly, this had led to a rather poor life, as the adverse effects of the suppressant are none to pleasant. the worst effects are kept in line with more medication. He carries most of these around in a messenger style back, along with his cards. [/style] |
