[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=width,400,true][cs=2] drink with me ♣ | [atrb=style, width: 50px;][atrb=valign,top] I | t wasn't everyday that someone blew up the Hollywood sign. Actually, Kyoko was pretty sure this had never happened before. Sure, the sign was worn down and sometimes had to be repaired, but when such a huge-scale damage was inflicted on the landmark... honestly, the Asian wasn't exactly sure how she was supposed to react to this. The initial shock and disbelief was involuntary, but when the case got handed to them, Kyoko knew better than to think that this was a 'natural occurrence'. It was also probably too much to hope that this was just from long years of wear and tear. After all, huge signs that were iconic to this area just don't fall down and get charred like as such. Perhaps it was also too much to ask not to be woken up at the crack of dawn by her partner...
She did wonder how exactly this was going to get replaced. Upon arriving at the scene, she found the place utterly... destroyed. She wasn't sure exactly how it happened, but one of the O's was missing from the sign, and an area near the sign was rather burned. "Kei, what are the details? Do you know them?" So she wanted to play detective a bit, what was so wrong with that? Sure, the two of them were cops, but at least they could do investigative work.
Kyoko hopped from the police cruiser, surveying the scene more closely. Although it was rather early in the morning, she was excited. There must have been some sort of reason Kei decided to wake her up, right? Was it another one of the mysterious inexplicable things? "Kei, was there anyone here at the scene of the crime... if this was a crime." There was no doubt that this was, but just... how? This wasn't natural at all. "Arson, maybe?" Maybe it was time to bring the yellow tape out.
Well, it was a beautiful overcast day, and a rather awkward way to start this Tuesday morning. She'd like to say that the sun was peeking out, but no can do on this day, April 10th. Kyoko hadn't been expecting a wake up call at 6 in the morning, though. |

She had been surprised when she received a call that morning from their captain ordering her to pick up Kyoko and immediately head to the Hollywood sign. What surprised her even more was the lack of paparazzi and news crews in the area. Apparently they had not picked up on this story yet and she would like to keep it that way for as long as possible.
Kei opened the trunk of the car and pulled out some gloves and yellow tape. They did not know what was going on but if this was a crime scene, they did not want to risk contamination. The press was going to have a field day with something as high profile as the decimation of a local landmark. Any mistakes they made in this case would definitely be on their necks.
”From what the captain told me this morning, tourists walking near the sign discovered the scene and reported it to the police,” Kei said as she handed Kyoko the gloves. |
[/b]”The tourists are being held at the station for questioning and we’re the first responders so you know about as much as I do.”[/b] ”Probably. There are two cars here and a bike. I doubt those were there yesterday. We can probably have CSU run the plates on them.” Kei paused and took a look at the destroyed ‘O’. ”Arson seems likely from the looks of it but this is still strange.” She walked forward a few steps, taking care to step around the shattered and melted pieces of the letter when she noticed something on the ground. ”Hey Kyoko, come here,” Kei gestured. ”Look at the ground from here. Do you see it?” Around them, what she had believed to be dirt no longer looked like dirt to her. The color of the substance was different than that of the dirt she was standing on. In fact, the odd colored dirt made a ring around her. What had happened here last night? [/div][/td][/tr][/table] [/center]

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=width,400,true][cs=2] drink with me ♣ | [atrb=style, width: 50px;][atrb=valign,top] T | ourists? Well, Kyoko couldn't blame them - they probably just wanted to see the sign early and then found this. At least they didn't go to the media right away. Heavens know what would happen if they did. She just imagined waking up in the morning, turning on the news and finding out that the Hollywood sign had changed overnight. Just amazing. Not everyday was something so huge done in so much. Of course, looking at the nature of the sign, and how much of an attraction it was, they probably wouldn't have long until even more nosy tourists started poking their noses in, and the media got a whiff of this (even from a distance people weren't blind - after all this was a huge sign seen from miles off). Even with the yellow tape Kei was putting up, it wouldn't keep people from not minding their own business.
Stupid civilians. Then again, when she was off duty she was one of those to observe and be curious. Kyoko was sure she had gotten in the way of plenty of police officers when she was back in high school and not yet an officer. And now she knew just how annoying she was - a great eye-opener, really. Of course, she didn't remember enough about those officers to apologize to them when she got to the force.
She grabbed some gloves that she neglected to take the first time around from the cruiser, and followed Kei when she pointed out the dirt. "That is odd - too symmetrical. Do we need to take a sample...? It doesn't really look like dirt at all." You don't say, Kyoko. State the obvious much? It was official - she wasn't the best at investigating at all.
I'm sorry omg Kyoko isn't helpful at all just look at her. She hates investigation. |

We probably should take a sample although be careful about it. We don’t know what it is exactly.” While her partner collected a sample of the strange powdery substance, Keiko radioed the police station and requested back up and a crime scene unit. They were not detectives but the police station was always understaffed. Perhaps they could help in this case. Once that was done, Keiko took another glance around the area but saw nothing else that was extremely noticeable.
Kyoko, continue looking around while I run those plates through our database. Try checking to see if there’s anything in the cars. The area is clear but remember to be careful.” Kei knew Kyoko was old enough to take care of and decide things for herself but she still couldn’t help but feel as if she needed to watch over and guide her partner. Perhaps it was because Kyoko has a tendency to get lost. Or perhaps she was just being bossy like some people had often accused her of being. In Kei’s opinion, they just didn’t like that fact that she had leadership qualities while they didn’t. Kyoko’s wasn’t like that though. If she were judgmental, Kei doubted that the partnership would have worked for that long.
Kei walked back to the police car and ran the two plates on the beat up cars through the computer database. Now all there was to do was wait. This case was vexing but it seemed like there was nothing too abnormal other than the fact that someone had set fire to the Hollywood “O”. They would find whoever did it, arrest them for arson, and close the case. |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=width,400,true][cs=2] drink with me ♣ | [atrb=style, width: 50px;][atrb=valign,top] S | cience was cool! Well, sort of. Actually, Kyoko never really did like science, when she thought about it. What was the use? Forensics were okay, she supposed, since they helped with identifying things. So that was why this was important - this powdered substance was a mystery, and Kyoko was curious as to what it was (plus, it might clear up some questions about this crime). So she started collecting some of it, while Kei went off to get backup. The younger of the two Asians was used to taking commands from Kei already. God knows what would happen if she hadn't taken charge - Kyoko probably would have burned down the remainder of the sign all on her own doing something stupid in investigating (she really didn't put it past herself for doing something like that).
Kyo examined the cars. What in the world could have made that glass shatter? She did have to thread rather carefully - she didn't want to cut herself on any of the glass particles. They could easily rip, being disposable and all. They didn't seem particularly useful. Maybe bullets? Or pressure, perhaps. But from what exactly? Nothing inside the car seemed suspicious. Nothing in the atmosphere seemed suspicious. Was it the weather? While she was sleeping, had the weather gone crazy on her? Still, she bagged some of the glass just in case there was something on it. There was probably nothing, although there was no harm just in case, right?
"Kei, was anyone found on the scene, or any victims?" In one of the cars, the keys were left in the ignition. It seemed a little odd that they'd leave their keys (all of them, at that) there. Turning them proved that the engine was dead. That explained why the cars were here, but the glass and the keys were still big mysteries. "Do you think you'd be able to trace these keys?" |

It was a good thing she was patient otherwise she did not know how she would put up with Kyoko sometimes. They were the first responders. They were the first, other than the tourists, to step onto the scene. Whatever they saw was what was there. If they did not find any victims then there were none. ”The tourists did not report seeing anyone fleeing the scene and there were no reported victims,” Kei began. ”At least there weren’t any found at the scene. We’re the first responders so whatever we find is what we know. Why do you ask? Did you find evidence of a struggle?” Kei asked curiously.
Kei diverted her attention from her partner when the beeping sounds alerted her that the license plates had a hit. Both the keys were traced back to women. One of the cars belonged to a young blonde girl and the other a brunette. The strange thing about this, however, was that both their files came back clean. Kei did not recognize them from any previous cases nor were they on any wanted lists. But even then, one needed to be wary. The cars could have been stolen from two perfectly law abiding citizens. Then again, the plates could have been falsified if they were the work of the mafia or some sort of crime syndicate. It was possible with the technology they had nowadays. The crime scene unit would be able to tell them more once they collect and prints. ”As for the keys, I’ve already traced the license plates so don’t worry about it. But I must admit it is strange. The cars were traced back to people that have clean records. The cars could have been stolen so I wouldn’t put too much faith on that though.”
Kei got out of the car and sighed dejectedly. ”This is not good. We have no leads. Captain is going to be down our necks for this considering how big of a case this is.” Although in Kei’s opinion the Hollywood sign was completely overrated. Well, whatever. It was a symbol of Los Angeles and there was going to be an uproar over this. She could feel it. |

Still, they ought to return the keys to their rightful owner, and at the same time, wouldn't it be best to ask them why their cars were at the scene of this crime? At the same time, the Asian had the impending feeling that this was going to lead nowhere. "I'm trying to figure out the broken glass. Could be someone broke it manually, I guess. Even though, why? They could've grabbed the keys as well, and everything of value didn't really seem touched (not that there was anything much of value in them anyways).
"We should still stop by their places, give them back their keys, ask them a few questions while we're at it. After all, they do have a connection, no matter how insignificant and small it may seem." And perhaps inform them that their cars were going to be put in evidence, and didn't even work anymore. Kyoko did wonder what these two had in connection to the case, anyways. Especially if they were clean. But still, their initial investigation was slowly coming to a dead end, and no matter how much she hated to say it, the Hollywood sign could be seen for miles and people would be stupid if they didn't see the missing O.
Even from miles off... But what kind of fire or accelerant left this kind of dirt? Kyoko held up the sample. Although she wasn't experienced in arson, even then she had never seen something like this. If even it was an accelerant. Who knew if the Hollywood sign was actually flammable - yet at the same time it had been enduring all that wear and tear. "It is rather high profile though, and I doubt it's just some prank some teens thought were funny. Though Captain probably would have our asses if something in this caliber didn't get solved. ... Good luck Kei~!" |

Well I have their addresses here. We can pay them a visit later.” Kei peered at the screen. ”One of the vehicles is owned by Ana Johan. She has no outstanding penalties against her. Wait, it seems she reported her car stolen last night.” Kei groaned and lightly hit her head against the frame of the police car. ”This sounds like another dead end,” Kei muttered. ”I suppose we should still go interview her if to at least get a sense of the time frame.”
Kei turned her head towards her partner with a half annoyed, half amused look. ”What do you mean good luck? You know you can’t get away from this. We’re both going to get our asses handed to us if nothing comes out of this.” If it were anyone else, Kei would have bitched about how they were pushing all the blame onto her. With Kyoko… well, Kyoko was special. Kei enjoyed being around her despite her partner’s airheaded-ness. And besides, they were partners. They would be together through thick and thin. There was a level of trust and camaraderie there that was not so easily broken.
The sound of a truck pulling up to the site prompted Kei to turn around. ”CSU is here,” the older Japanese woman shouted before waving to the driver as the van pulled up to the crime scene. Kei walked toward the older woman that hopped out of the car. ”Long time no see, Isobel. We’ve got some strange particle samples we need you to test. Also, can you tell us what was used to burn down the ‘O’? I’ll be over there with Kyoko. Let us know once you get results.”
Kei did as she had said and left Isobel to her work. ”So Kyoko, let’s take a look at the ‘o’ shall we? I’m sure CSU will have results for us in a few moments.”

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=width,400,true][cs=2] drink with me ♣ | [atrb=style, width: 50px;][atrb=valign,top] D | ead ends. That's where every single lead was leading them. Kyoko couldn't say she was very pleased with this, but it was inevitable. The cars too... a stolen car. But the keys... did their keys get stolen too? "Does it have what time she reported it stolen, or was it just a general timing?" Probably wouldn't make all that much of a difference anyways. "I guess that'll be as good of an idea as any." There wasn't much else to do but look at the scene of the destruction.
And she was caught. Kei seemed to catch on the moment she said those words, but Kyoko expected it. This was her partner, and her partner (if anybody) knew all her tricks of squirming out of tough situations. This was certainly one of the most used, if not most obvious one. "Ah, it was worth a try. Oh well. I knew I'd have to anyways. If anyone's going to be blamed it's me since I'm not quite the 'model officer'." Of course, if Kyoko got in trouble, so did Kei so that wasn't exactly much of a reassurance. "I promise I won't back out, Kei-chann."
Ah look, CSU! They could finally find out what this strange mysterious substance was. Kyoko smiled at the older woman and handed her the vial full of that stuff. Hopefully it wouldn't be too difficult - it was, thus far, the only interesting thing they had. To say she was curious was an understatement. In fact, she did want to know what it was immediately and would have insisted to stay back and wait for the results if she had even a passing chance. But with Kei here to keep her focused she'd be practically forced and dragged to the scene of the crime either way. Plus, there was certainly going to be plenty to see at the actual Hollywood sign. And maybe a few answers would be there.
So she dutifully followed Kei towards the scene, even if she did want to see what the mysterious dirt was. She could already tell that it would be a while until the sign was repaired. Whoever was to be blamed for them, well Kyoko certainly hoped they were rich and could pay for this, because something on this scale certainly couldn't be cheap to fix. Even then, they would be known down the line in history as the one who broke the Hollywood sign. Fantastic knowing that. "I wonder just how much this will cost..." |

"I believe that the car was reported stolen-" Kei paused mid sentence. "Actually, what time is it? The car was reported stolen about fifteen minutes ago." The older Japanese woman had not caught that at all. She had expected the car to have been reported stolen before they arrived on scene. Based on the timeline the car would have been reported stolen around the time they had arrived. That was certainly rather suspicious. Perhaps a visit to the owner of the stolen vehicle was not such a bad idea.
Taking care not to disturb anything that might be considered evidence, Kei slowly stepped across the dusty landscape to look at the spot where the 'O' once stood. "Do you see anything?" she asked her partner because she could not. Other than the obvious burn spot where the giant letter once stood, Kei honestly did not see anything of importance. Call her oblivious, but it was early morning and she really did not want to be here investigating some high profile arson case that was sure to cause more trouble than necessary. Perhaps if they were lucky Kyo might actually stumble upon something.
”More than we’re getting paid, that’s for sure,” Kei replied absentmindedly in response to her partner’s question. They were getting nowhere and Kei was beginning to feel frustrated at the lack of progress they were making. She sighed. ”Ne Kyo, once reinforcements arrive to close off the area I think we should head back to the station. I really don’t see anything else we can do here. Do you?” |

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellspacing,0,true][atrb=width,400,true][cs=2] drink with me ♣ | [atrb=style, width: 50px;][atrb=valign,top] I | t's only six... or around it." How long had they been out? The cruiser had said that it had been six when they arrived, and honestly they really hadn't been investigating for very long. So the fact that it would have been fifteen minutes ago... too suspicious to be left alone, as Kei had so aptly put it. "Should we head there next, or another time?" After nap time, more like it. Even though she had been up for a good amount of time as of now, Kyoko had been so rudely awakened to the point that she really was rather tired (the night before had been, how should she saw, rather long).
"I... I don't really see anything, to be honest. More of the dirt stuff, burns on the sign, and... really, nothing." The best evidence they had as of yet were the cars that couldn't start up, and the owner that had only reported it stolen minutes ago. "Sorry Kei-nee." She really... didn't find anything. One would think there'd be more evidence, but nothing, not even debris from what would have been left of supplies that burned through the sign itself. Nothing to track where they might have gone, or suggest they had even been near the sign. But what else - how else would they have set fire to the sign if they weren't close to it?
"The station sounds right about good right now. Paperwork sounds nice too." A lie, and her partner could see through it no doubt (when did Kei ever do the paperwork?), but she could always... pretend to do the paperwork and take a nap in the meantime. Or watch Kei do the paperwork. That was always an option too - if she could keep her eyes open. Something rather enthralling about the older cop was when her brow was furrowed over something difficult, or when she was working hard. Even now, as Kyoko surveyed the scene with her, her partner looked cute even in her frustration. But she's my partner, and that's that. No changing something like that. |
