Living Situation Naos's family back in Norway is upper middle class. Though often stuck indoors, his basic needs were always met and he could always get a new book at his disposal. In the States, he lives with some relatives and he gets by just fine with what allowance his parents send him. Outside of the Impedio Society, he has no job or internships. He's interested in getting some sort of job if only for his own amusement, but for now he only has his education to worry about. High School Student; For someone who hadn't attended a public school prior to his relocation to California, Naos blends in with the normal high school scene fairly well as a transfer student. The most fascinating thing for him there are the other students, and most of his eccentricities are looked over on the basis that he's foreign. It's a pretty sweet gig. 02. Appearance The Dia line that Naos comes from is mostly Nordic, meaning he inherited rather fair skin and hair. His red hair often lays rather lifelessly on his head and has grown to chin length. Prior to his move to the States, it had been kept short at the insistence of his mother, but he let it grow out as part of his personal teenage rebellion. The boy stands at the unextraordinary height of 5' 5". He is skinny, pale, and to some he is a bit frail looking to boot, so most people find him very un-intimidating at a first glance. However, he is a wolf in sheep's skin. Wherever he lacks physical strength, he makes up for by being swift, dangerously precise, and surprisingly flexible. Also, he's rather good with climbing, so it's clear he is capable of at least supporting his own body weight despite his lack of muscle. His sense of style, or lack thereof, really doesn't help him look any more threatening. Moving internationally from a very cold place to a warm one meant he could only bring so many clothes with him. He supplemented the normal summery outfits he had from home with random and sometimes bizarre finds from thrift stores around Los Angeles. There are days where his outfits don't match at all, because he won't hesitate to wear a baggy floral shirt with zebra-stripped legging pants. However, he's most partial to light hoodies and capri pants. His color choices are usually bold and bright. 03. Personality Positives: Jovial, Energetic, Observant, Erudite, Quirky Negatives: Intrusive, Exhausting, Fastidious, Smart-Mouthed, Deceitful Upon meeting Naos, he seems like a typical teenager. A weird teenager, but just a teenage boy nonetheless. The first impression most get from him is that he doesn't have a shy bone in his body. He's not afraid to do strange things like spend the day walking backwards everywhere, and he'll talk to anyone or everyone he meets along the way. This is something that can be enjoyed and admired for some. Unfortunately, he's extraverted without restraint. He is friendly, charismatic, and assertive, not afraid of jumping straight into a conversation even if it's a private one that he has not been welcomed to. While he's quick to make himself a person's friend, it's clear that he has no respect for certain social boundaries. He has a good-hearted air about him and never holds back from hanging off of a person even if he hasn't known them long. Personal space? That concept doesn't even make sense to him. He doesn't see anything wrong in expressing an enjoyment of company through physical contact. In that way, he's a bit like a platonically affectionate cuddle bunny. However, the rest of that package makes it clear he's more like an energizer rabbit. Sure, he's human, he does need to sleep. When he's out, he's out. It's when he's awake that the amount of energy the boy has never seems to deplete. He can go on for hours in whatever he's doing. This is fun at first, as he's fully capable of being the life of a long and thoughtful conversation, but most people hit a breaking point that he never really seems to cross. Overall, his personality is of a jovial boy who will never let someone feel alone once he's honed in on them. He's friendly and there's rarely a dull moment when he's present in a room. On the other hand, for plenty of people, he's a friend that can only be taken in certain quantities. He's a fun character that brings a lot of interesting things to the social table, but he just keeps going and going and going. He leaves no chance for some personal space or downtime when he can help it. He'll always have something to talk about. He'll always have something to do. You can tell him when enough is enough, but that's just his moment to suggest a film to watch, cuddle up close, and talk your ear off through the whole thing while you 'rest'. He's a person that needs very clear boundaries because he takes miles when given an inch. Aside from just being the overly affectionate sort of friend, the boy does have other reasons for being called strange or eccentric. Naos has an intellectual capacity that often surprises those who slowly discover what he's really capable of. He was born a bright boy to brilliant parents, and he had no choice as a child but to devotedly hone his mental skills. Not only is he an encyclopedia of academic knowledge whether basic or bizarre, he is also an intense observer of everything around him. He'll be the first person to admit that he really doesn't know everything, but that doesn't mean he isn't trying to learn everything he can. He has a curiosity that never seems to be appeased and he always seems to take it a step too far. Though at this point he's a calm sort observer that will look quite casual as he's scanning a person, place, or thing, it should never be mistaken that he is indeed focusing on even the most minute details of the thing or situation. He'll be the first person to compliment another on that subtle new haircut or their freshly clipped fingernails. Creepy when it's the fingernails, yeah, but he's always paying attention once a person has caught his eye. This is where the transition into the life as a normal high schooler has been a little difficult for him. He finds the material he's forced to study rather dull. He hasn't spoken a word of his displeasure or the reasons behind it while actually at school in order to keep up appearances. However, he has gotten in trouble a few times for being an obnoxious smart-mouth not above rudely correcting his teachers and calling them totally pedestrian, all with a large casual grin on his face. Naos does try to control his tongue, but sometimes he just can't stop the build up of frustration from rolling out in the form of cheeky comments and sharp jokes. It doesn't help that he's quick to pick up on mistakes when it's something he has already learned. When it's a mistake of his own, he still has an involuntary twitch in his hands from years of receiving more bruised knuckles than a Catholic school troublemaker. The ability to let something stay as is was trained out of him long ago. He can't let even a small mistake sit, much to the chagrin of his current educators. The outer layer of his personality is so vibrant that it's easy for most to go forever without knowing what sort of person is really underneath it all. However, what lurks beneath makes him nothing short of a blossoming schizoid. Mentally, Naos is very much engaged with the world around him. That is what makes up his believable friendly demeanor. Emotionally, though, Naos is totally detached to the extent that he's not even quite sure what he should feel towards his own parents. He is very much aware of this, but he doesn't see it as a problem. He has feelings of his own, but he remains casually unaffected and unconcerned with the feelings of others. It's a matter of having a very unique view of the world that was built from his bubble of a childhood. He mentally understands his place in the world and then looks at everyone else as not quite a person, but another thing. He's fascinated by the observable world while simultaneously he is always imagining the potential based on the fanciful ideas he has going through his head. He has one foot in the real world while the other is often swept up in fantasies. The combination makes him formidable as a budding scientist. He is endlessly creative and he's an inventive problem solver whose leaps in connections and logic, though at times baffling, are impressive and often surprisingly sound. However, seeing the world as pliable and purely material means that every person is hardly more than a character. Sure, they're intriguing and he enjoys watching them develop, but that's about the same view he has toward making Cup o' Noodles. Intellectually, he does know that there's an idea that humans are worth something greater. He's good at keeping up a facade if only because he knows better. However, he is just not emotionally on the same wave-length, leaving his "relationships" and even just people themselves as trivial as everything else in the world. Interesting, but as much disposable as they are potential components in something bigger. Though one would think that such a large maladjustment would be brought up as a concern at some point, Naos's brilliance has saved him from the troubles of social therapy. He is bizarrely self-aware and unapologetically content with his capacities. He's a boy who doesn't want to change how he sees the world, but he's always been smart enough to wear the right masks. The end result? A skillful academic who is fully capable of dissecting live baby bunnies or even stabbing someone close to him in the back without feeling a shred of guilt over the matter, all under the guise of a clever eccentric known to plenty of people as a cuddle monster. It's not the safest combination. 04. History The Nordic branch of the Dia family that Naos comes from is a bright one. Their main focus has evolved over the generations to making supportive scientific or historical discoveries. They are a line of highly noted academics. As for his parents specifically, his father is an inventor/researcher and his mother is an archivist/historian. Both were, of course, born into the ways of the society. It was an exciting day when the two were requested to raise the next Naos Dia. They were a respected and intelligent pair who would take the duty as an exciting experiment that would hopefully become their greatest contribution to the Impedio Society. Unfortunately, the boy's beginnings were both troubling and disappointing to those who had expected him to take on the name of Naos Dia. He was born a bit too soon and a bit too frail. However, his parents were as much stubbornly proud as they were brilliant, and they were determined to make him live up to the name no matter what that took. They spent the first few years raising him in a bubble. This meant he was expected to stay indoors for the majority of those early years with little company other than his parents. The family lived in the Norwegian city of Oslo, but he found himself rarely able to set foot outside of their home. Even after he had grown out of the health concerns from his infancy, his parents still insisted on keeping him sheltered. He was homeschooled, he ate only a strict health food diet, he played alone, and he was rarely even allowed to watch the television. Needless to say, this lifestyle didn't really fit the young Naos. It was all he had ever known, but he was a very bright child who always caught on to much more than people gave him credit for. He knew that he was special for reasons they wouldn't tell him, but he didn't like being treated that way. He was energetic and he had a hungry curiosity for the world that he was being sheltered from. Thankfully, he learned to read at a very young age, so the husband and wife team attempted to feed that curiosity with book after book. He spent the first seven years of his life clawing through a small library's worth of books, loving most the books about places he wasn't allowed to go and the things he wasn't allowed to do. He was a small boy with big ideas that were inspired by the way he wanted to see the world. Naos's love when it came to literacy and his capabilities in retaining information made his homeschooling easy. However, it wasn't simple in the least. Having intelligent parents with very high expectations made for a brutally demanding education that was started as soon as they had taught him to read and write. The more they saw he was capable of, the more they would toss at him. If he ever failed to complete his work entirely with a certain standard, they took the approach of ruler discipline. After plenty of bruised knuckles, his focus was forcefully honed. He was mastering algebra at the age of eight and diving into physics by the time he reached twelve. For some reason he never found himself resenting the situation or his parents. It just created the need in his brain for more, like an odd addiction to learning. He was happy to push himself. His good attitude and desire to broaden his fields were what finally led to his parents expanding his bubble. At age eleven, he was finally allowed a bit more free reign when it came to electronics and electronic media, which left him excitedly overwhelmed by a whole new world to tear apart piece by piece, and page by page. Discovering more about the world through media also led to him making a few smart-mouthed comments and questions about 'the cult' they were a part of, which led to more bruised knuckles and then some detailed history lessons about the Impedio Society. He finally fully knew where his place in the world was to be. Though he was confused regarding how he really felt about it, he was fascinated by the prospects. To keep him from becoming a sedentary computer addict, eleven was also the age that he began his physical training. He was formidable when it came to his mental prowess, but physically he was still lacking. Up to that age, he had only been doing yoga with his mother everyday to keep a healthy limber build. He was… well, not the most impressive future agent in strength and build otherwise. Everyone that had the chance to meet him knew it, and his parents were prodded by other family members to force him into real training. He needed to be a just as skilled physically as he was mentally. To play on his strong points, he was tossed into building his speed first. He was also taught other important defensive maneuvers so that he could swiftly avoid and make quick attacks that counted. Being a person who was precise in his actions, that much went well for him. Sadly, his performance in offensive hand-to-hand combat was poor and it hardly showed improvement. He tried, he really, really did. He just wasn't physically capable and his body cracked under the strain. He would come home cut and bruised with nothing much to show for it. It was disappointing to discover his weaknesses after so much academic success, especially when it was such a large flaw, but close-range offense was ruled out for him. Thankfully, he found a way to make up for it. What he did have going for him was a pair of sharp eyes and the ability to pick up on aim calculation very quickly. Naos was trained in archery, something offensive that he finally excelled at. Everyone just hoped that any close contact would be avoided. Naos spent the next few years improving his ability and building his proficiencies. It was all becoming rather routine despite his best efforts to entertain himself with what he was expected to do. That's when the exciting word finally got to his family about the confusion stirring in the States. His parents seemed fairly set on staying in Oslo, feeling that their resources and talents didn't need to travel. However, Naos decided to take a step forward on his own. He didn't ask them for permission. Naos just told them that he was going. Uncertainties were in the air because he was still young and technically still in training. It was the boy's clever tongue that managed to convince everyone that the experience would be good for him and that he didn't want to see his talents wasted. Agreements were had, visas and passports were obtained, and Naos was sent to live with some relatives in Los Angeles while his parents remained in Oslo. They wanted him to go, but they didn't yet trust him to live on his own. Before he left, they also finally trusted him with the magical item that had been passed down their line. It was just after New Year's that the sixteen-year-old boy arrived in California, and the culture shock was massive. He was still mostly a shut-in back in Oslo, but his life suddenly turned in a completely different direction. While his relatives still expected him to keep up certain routines, he was to pose as a transfer student at a public high school and he had what felt like a world's worth of freedoms. He was respectful of new house rules, but he took those new freedoms and ran with them. He went to the movies whenever he pleased, helped himself to his first real greasy cheeseburger, and he hasn't looked back. Though overwhelmed with the changes, it just fueled his need for exploration and he adapted surprisingly well. However, one thing is obvious: he is playing. As a teenage boy suddenly loose from a strict upbringing, not much else could be expected of him, but it has been a bit troublesome to others that he's not taking a potentially threatening situation more seriously than he is. 04. Extras » He has trained in combat to an extent, as was expected. However, he's still a bit green. With his sharp eyes and calculating aim, he excels only in long-range combat like archery for now. The other techniques he's been improving involve avoidance of the opponent when in close range, and performing sneak attacks when necessary. » His English is fairly fluent and, like plenty of others in the younger media-exposed generation of Norway, his accent by American standards is not heavy. However, he does have an odd habit of making up phrases for situations where he lacks the correct phrase or slang. Also, his Norwegian inflection is more noticeable when he's saying his name or reading words he doesn't recognize right away. » He's always seeking something new to learn and is good with independent study. He would like to learn more languages, but languages like Spanish are a bit more difficult for him to pronounce. » Naos has an incredibly shameless addiction to caffeine. Some men like to be kept in whiskey, but Naos prefers to be kept in tea whenever he can help it. His favorite LA discovery was Teavana. » » The magical item passed down to him by his parents is a pair of old loupe spectacles. In most situations these are totally useless outside of helping him magnify smaller objects, but they hold another ability. They can pick up on the presence of elemental energy. For the most part they've been used to identify other magical items in the past, but obviously they could be useful on the field. Unfortunately, the downside to this is they are just for examining things and areas, and even then the years haven't been kind to the spectacles. Their age is starting to show in the form of their ability being a little shoddy. Small traces of energy can hardly be picked up anymore, so there's much less of an accuracy rate for anything that isn't immediately present. |
