Living Situation She's from a middle class family in Florida; while she keeps in close contact with her mom and dad back home, she refuses all of their offers to send money. She's an adult, she can take care of herself! She's currently sharing an apartment with Anabel Bailey and Eilia Tifiel, and the only thing stopping her from bringing home every animal she finds is the strict no pets rule in their building. She just wants to hug every cat, but she can't- Pet Store Worker - As soon as she arrived in LA and got settled in, Kris began immediately applying for jobs in the area. She was lucky that there was a job opening available at the store she wanted to work at most: a local pet store that was relatively popular in the area. Being an avid animal lover all her life, and having plenty of previous experience caring for pets, she easily snagged the job and began happily working at the store, doing whatever was needed of her at the time. She's only been there for a short amount of time, but she's already made friends with the owner and has had lengthy discussions with him about animal rights after hours. Animal Shelter Volunteer - And, well, after she found out there was a no kill shelter just down the street from where she lives, Kris didn't waste a second signing up as a volunteer. She now gets to help out taking care of cats and dogs for a few hours, and she couldn't be happier! Of course, the cats tend to scratch her up without warning and that sucks a lot, but it's only because they're scared! R-Really! Her life is literally Animal Crossing. 02. Appearance The best way to describe Kris in one word is 'cute.' She doesn't even bother to go out of her way, she's just simply adorable; mention as much to her, and she'll dissolve into a blushing mess, assuring you that, no, you're terribly mistaken, sorry, but she's not. Continue to insist on it, and you'll eventually win, but not because you're right or anything. She just doesn't want to argue over something like this, especially assuming that you're a stranger. If you're a friend, however, rest assured that she'll hand you a biting retort or a sarcastic reply in return for your compliment. Her light brown hair has signs of being cut at home, possibly with a pair of house scissors in the bathroom mirror. It's short and choppy, but gets the job done of keeping her hair out of her eyes and off her neck. She's been meaning to get it touched up at a salon, but it always seems to slip her mind. And besides, it somehow seems to accentuate her big brown eyes anyway, though you'd almost think she didn't want the attention with the way she diverts her gaze whenever someone looks at her. Perhaps that's why she opts to wear glasses instead of contacts, as if she can hide behind the frames. Her skin is lightly tanned from all her time spent outdoors in the unforgiving Florida sun. A light smattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks has always been a source of disgust for her ever since she was a kid, but she's since learned to live with them. She's fairly tall and slim at 5'7", almost reminiscent of a gymnast with her slender figure, but don't let her looks fool you. She's perpetually tripping over herself and bumping into things, and don't even ask her how many times she's walked into a wall before. She'd like to blame it on her bad eyesight, but she's just as clumsy with her glasses as she is without. Her hands and arms have countless scratches all over them from handling cats at the shelter where she volunteers, and much to her complete and utter exasperation some of them appear to be scarring. She has a fairly flat chest which is offset by curvy hips, and a small nose set above chapped lips. She's not likely to smile too often, but she does have small smiles that can turn into wide grins around the right people. Fashion is not something Kris has any interest in or passion for, and her wardrobe is evidence of this. She's one of those people who wears the same pair of jeans day-after-day and hopes nobody notices. She would prefer wearing hoodies and jackets, but since moving to California she doesn't get to wear them as much anymore- unless she wants to have a heatstroke, anyway. These days she often wears jeans and shorts coupled with layered tank tops and simple shirts. She's not one for wearing make-up unless she's going out somewhere or meeting someone important, and even if she does she's likely to keep it light and simple. With her hair now cut in a bob, she can literally roll out of bed and throw on whatever looks and smells clean before rushing out the door. So long as she looks somewhat presentable, she doesn't particularly care about how she looks. 03. Personality a perfect disaster (reserved) The first thing you'll notice upon meeting Kristen is that she's painfully shy. She doesn't speak unles spoken to, and finds it incredibly difficult to start conversations with others. She doesn't do well at parties or most social gatherings, unless she has a friend there to latch onto. Even then she needs to be forced into socializing, or otherwise have a reason to interact with complete strangers. It's for this reason that she can deal with customers at work, but outside of her workplace she'd rather die than start a conversation with someone she doesn't know. Get her talking about something she likes or cares about though, and you won't get her to shut up. Please don't confuse her timid nature with being easily manipulated or pushed around, however; when push comes to shove she can and will bite back. (eccentric) Get to know her and manage to wriggle your way into her circle of friends, and she'll slowly begin to open up. Between her tendency to say whatever comes to mind and her penchant for daydreaming, she will often say and do things most would consider abnormal by society's standards. Between rambling extensively about who would win in a fist fight, a bear or a shark, she has been known to steal cats and break into neighbor's houses in search of dead bodies. Of course, the latter was when she was much younger, but it's safe to say if given the chance she'd be more than happy to return to her silly ways. In the meantime, you can count on her to say some of the weirdest things off the top of her head that will make you pause, think about what she just said, then slowly palm your face. (honest) She speaks her mind way too frequently for her own good, often spitting out the first thing on her tongue. This gets her into trouble far more often than she'd care to admit, as she will gladly tell you to your face that, yes, you do look fat in that dress, and no, red is definitely not your color. It's for this reason and this reason alone she's no good in retail. Deadpan replies and sarcastic comments are quicker to fall off her lips than compliments and praise, and the sooner you realize that that's just her way of showing affection, the sooner you can stop being insulted by whatever she just called your mother, you dumb ass. She does know when to hold her tongue, however, and will easily fabricate lies off the top of her head in order to keep her secrets safe. (whimsical) She's prone to fits of whimsy, and will often become engrossed in daydreams, to the point where you're not sure if she's awake or asleep. She lives in castles made of clouds and walks through flowers made of glass, and will never really snap awake. She has a childish fear of growing up not unlike that of a Lost Boy, and as a result she will lose herself in fantasy and fiction rather than return to reality. She would love to be like a character from a book and live a life she's only ever dreamed of, but she always has one foot on the ground, and while she is often lost in thought she won't let someone else get the upper hand over her as a result. She is always in control. (realistic) She walks a wire thin line between optimism and cynicism. While she's not wearing rose-tinted glasses, she's not exactly carrying an umbrella either. She neither sees the glass half empty nor half full; she's much more likely to knock the glass over entirely and walk out of the room, declaring that this is bullshit and she has better things to do. While she's perfectly cheerful most of the time, she can just as easily be a number of any different adjectives as well. Sometimes even all at the same time! You can't define her by any given emotion; to do so would be a mistake and an insult. (selfless) She doesn't realize this herself, but Kris is incredibly benevolent when it comes to other people. She will always offer to help someone who looks like they are in need of a hand, and has a soft spot for the young and the innocent. She tends to place others above herself, as if everyone else comes before her. She will willingly take the blow intended for someone else without a second thought, as she's inherently selfless and brave, but does not actually see that in herself. Whatever she might say, she is far more kind than she gives herself credit for, and is empathetic towards the people around her. This tends to hinder her however, as she will so often place others' wants and needs above her own that she will have zero regard for what she wants. (obstinate) She's as stubborn as the changing of seasons after a long winter. When you least expect her to she will gladly go with the flow, but just when you need her most she'll suddenly plant her feet and refuse to budge an inch. She will defy all logic and reason if it means doing what she believes is right. What she believes is right is often open to interpretation, as her morals can appear quite skewed to some, but rest assured in knowing that she would never let someone else take a fall for her. She may weave an intricate web of lies and tales, but if there's one thing to be said about her, it's that she will never place the blame on someone else for her actions. She takes credit for her mistakes. (anxious) She is often plagued by a constant stream of thoughts; is she doing the right thing? Is she making a mistake? Is she really doing what's right, or is she just deluding herself with dreams of grand adventures? She is restless as a result, constantly looking for something to occupy herself with to distract her from her nervous thoughts. Whether it's reading for hours at a time or late night walks through the surrounding neighborhood, you can guarantee that at any given time she will find something to do. Anything's better than thinking about the holes burning through her stomach. (mistrustful) She's not so much mistrustful as she is just slow to warm up to strangers. It'll take her a month to learn your name, another month to realize she likes you, and then another month to actually admit to herself that she likes you. And in the meantime she will treat you exactly the same as when you first met her. And how she treats you depends largely on your first encounter with her; she can either see you as an old friend or an old enemy, a sister or a nemesis, a mentor or a delinquent. She has a soft spot for the young and innocent though, and will usually bend over backwards to lend a hand to those in need of it, whether they actually want it or not. (insecure) As much as one might list all her positive traits and characteristics, Kris can't identify any of them for herself. To her, she is inadequate, vulnerable and gullible and stupid and cowardly and ignorant and not good enough, never good enough, neither for herself nor others. As much as she might smile or laugh, it's all a farce to hide someone who thinks she is nothing. She knows she's a hot mess and would like to get better, she really would, but it will only be with time and a lot of love that she will ever be able to overcome this mindset. Until then, she is stuck in a cycle of self-deprecation. 04. History a hopeless dreamer Kris was born and raised in the Florida Keys, hailing from small town with a population of just over 5,000. (While it's a perfectly nice place to visit, living there is another thing entirely.) She's the oldest of three, with a younger brother and sister who she cares for deeply. She grew up in a fairly typical household; her parents were perfectly nice and respectable people, and while her siblings could get annoying she'd always love them with all her heart. Her mom worked from home as a reporter for the local paper, and her dad owned a mechanics shop that specialized in boat repairs. They didn't have a lot, but they were never wanting, either. It was a comfortable life. She lived her whole life wanting to leave it all behind someday. The overwhelming feeling that permeated her her entire life growing up made her feel guilty though. What did she have to run away from? Sure, it could get boring sometimes, growing up in such a small town, but that was no reason to drop her life and her family and leave them all behind the minute she got the chance, right? But she couldn't talk herself out of this feeling that she needed to leave, and as soon as possible, as hard as she might try. Growing up, she filled her days with any and everything she could find to occupy her time, from snorkeling to tree climbing. She was the only girl in her neighborhood, which never bothered her until all her friends decided to join the local boys soccer team. Needless to say, she persisted until they let her join as well. (It wasn't like a lot of kids had signed up that year, anyway. Besides, what did they have to lose?) She played for about a year before she got bored and quit. She never joined another sports team again. When she was 7, Kris really, really wanted a pet, but her parents absolutely refused to get her one. So she stole the neighbor's cat and hid it in her room. She was grounded for a month. And when she was 10, she decided the new neighbor just had to be a serial killer. So she and a couple of friends broke into his house one day to look for dead bodies. She was grounded for 3 months then. Despite whatever fun she could find for herself, however, she felt like nothing she did could measure up to the adventures she read about in her favorite storybooks. And so she got older and older. Around middle school the loud, rambunctious child Kris had been slowly became a quiet, withdrawn preteen. And with each passing year she only got worse, becoming increasingly quiet and shy, until everyone in her classes had decided that she was mute. She had a few friends that she could talk to, but otherwise her school days were spent in silence. As if to make up for this, Kris found other things to keep herself entertained. Her high school barely had any AP classes, so she took online courses to earn college credits. By the time she applied for college, she actually had enough credits to qualify as a 2nd year, much to her own shock. After graduating from high school, she went on to college, moving up to school in Athens, Georgia. (With her test scores, she probably could have gotten in anywhere.) She decided to major in biology, with the intention of eventually going on to study veterinary medicine. She'd graduate in just a few short years, then go on to vet school, intern for a while, and go on to settle down somewhere and fix house cats. It all sounded so perfect, and that's exactly what she wanted. At least, that's what she had thought she wanted. It was in the middle of finals week that she was suddenly hit by the overwhelming feeling of needing to leave, now. It didn't matter when, how, or where, so long as she got out of there as soon as possible. It made her heart race and filled her with an excited kind of fear; like she was in on some secret that only she knew. She held in until after finals, then packed her bags and up and left without any warning. She bought the cheapest plane ticket to anywhere that she could find at such short notice, and in an instant she was gone, like smoke on the wind. When she finally touched back on ground again she called up her parents and told them the change of plans; that she was sorry, but she wasn't going to be visiting over the summer. And she, uh, wasn't going to be interning at the vet's office up in Atlanta like she had been planning, after all. Yes, she was safe, yes, she had money, yes, mom, she had a jacket in case it got cold. She just had something she needed to do. And while it filled her with dread to confess all this to her parents just like that, they were surprisingly supportive of her decision to disappear without a trace. It was with a sigh of relief that she eventually hung up the phone, then moved on to the next order of business: figuring out just where the hell she was going from here. And that was how she ended up in Los Angeles, California. 05. Misc.
