Living Situation Ashley is a young woman who knows what she wants and won't stop to get it. She is a middle class worker, residing in an apartment building on a hill. You can find her on the fifth floor, sixth room down on the right. The flats are in need of some renovations, but they are quitel comfortable. Just as long as you don't mind the creaking and groaning of the floorboards at night. Ashley doesn't mind, since she is often out of the apartment for work or exploring the city at night. It is also in a prime location for her - being near the police station. It's always great when you need to run down the hill to get to work! Climbing back up the hill, however, is a different story. Student of Criminology (Graduate): Having successfully completed a B.S. in Criminal Justice at the California State University of Los Angeles, Ashely considers this one of her greater accomplishments in life. She is extremely interested in the more practical side of things, such as investigating crime scenes and hunting down the pieces to what happened. Doing some solid detective work. However, much to her dismay, her marks indicated that she would be far more suited to writing up reports on said crime scenes. How boring is that? Receptionist for the Los Angeles Police Department: Ashley originally applied to the L.A.P.D. for an internship, wishing to apply herself in a far more practical manner. Unfortunately, she could not make the cut for what she had thought was going to be her way into the police force. And yet, she found herself receiving an email offering her a position as a receptionist due to her skills in report writing. Never before had Ashley felt so happy to get a desk job. While her actual job focuses on being a receptionist and coffee girl, she still hungrily listens for opportunities for her to jump up and prove herself worthy of something else completely. Especially when there are crimes that are having trouble being solved. After all, it pays to be patient, but you need to be proactive to get stuff done. 02. Appearance Ashley takes great pride in her appearance. Dressing smartly for the office, and more 'casually stylish' in her own time, she prides herself in looking her best. However, it takes a lot to keep looking 100%. Two features people would notice would be her pale skin and richly colored red hair. The latter is horribly time consuming, with lots of products being used on it to keep it silky and pristine. And the occasional dye job as well (she is actually a brunette. The fewer people who know, the better). Her skin, however, isn't as difficult. More often than not she just needs to keep sunblock on it, due to how easily she burns under the Californian sun. Sometimes you can see the hints of freckles on her shoulders and face, but it is usually covered by a generous dusting of foundation. It's not uncommon to see her skin red in patches in the summer, however. When she walks into a room, Ashley does so with her head held high and confidence oozing out of her thickly. Even on the days she is feeling otherwise, anyone looking at her would see a completely different story. Shoulders back and posture straight, she tries to present herself in a very professional manner in the office. At home she is far more relaxed, allowing herself to put her feet up on sofas and let her hair run wild. But you never know when the station might call and offer her extra hours... One thing about Ashley that you can't ignore is her smile. There are many variants of it - the polite one, the confident one, the one where she can't help but bite her lip slightly in embarrassment... but it is not uncommon to see one on her face. When things start getting serious, you might find her still smiling even then. After all, she wishes to be a shining light for justice and hope to others. Better approach everything head-on with a smile on your face! 03. Personality + JUST + COURAGEOUS + ADAMANT + INQUISITIVE + OUTGOING + AMBITIOUS If you need to know only one thing about Ashley, let it be this - she lives for justice. If anyone is being given bad treatment in front of Ashley, she would march over, stand her ground, and force her way into the conversation as a mediator until everything is settled. In fact, it is not unusual to find her standing between two complete strangers having an argument just so she can tell them to break it up and resolve things like adults. This is something that she has always done, even as a young girl. It is one of the few things she feels like she is born to do. No matter what, she will always keep an ear out for people in trouble, looking to it as her duty and right to dissolve disputes and stop conflict in its tracks. Of course, this attitude has gotten her into trouble several times, but nothing would ever make her regret helping someone in need. With this comes great stubbornness. Even if physically pushed back, Ashley will do her damn best to stand her ground. More often than not, any resistance to her actions and ideals makes her even more determined to stand by them. Once she believes in something, her opinion will not yield, no matter what anyone says to her. Even with her close friends she will not listen, often standing her ground and waiting to see evidence for herself before even considering backing down. After all, seeing the truth with your own eyes is worth more than words any day of the week. Ashley is also highly curious, often liking to look up books or search engines in her free time to seek out new information. More often than not it revolves around old and unsolved crimes reported by the newspapers years ago (she is determined to find a lead for a cold case one day), but occasionally she dials it back to something simple. Like "how many stab wounds does it take for a man to die?". After all, who knows if it would help later when she gets the chance to crack at a case? With friends, she is sociable and outgoing. She loves nightclubs and having a good time with friends, and songs with good beats. She is likely to be found dancing, chatting, gossiping, and slyly passing over business cards printed with her phone number on it to any cute guys at the bar. After all, she does her best to work hard at the police department, so it is wonderful for Ashley to let her hair down and enjoy herself. Usually she tries to get people together on Friday and Saturday to party 'til dawn (or until they decide they just want to go to someones house and drink wine for the rest of the night). She loves sharing stories from around the office, such as the time a Football Mascot got drunk and was taken into the police for a day to sober up. In her work, Ashley is often rather ambitious and confident of her abilities. She seeks to prove herself, and also wishes to be able to obtain a job where she can be challenged constantly. Although this usually means she gets in over her head at times, it is all worth it in the end just so then she can be an investigator. Even outside of work she can be extremely determined and driven, from large scale projects of hers to winning three-legged races at charity picnics. - BOSSY - SPITEFUL - HARSH - MERCILESS - OUTSPOKEN - OVERCRITICAL Despite her thirst for seeking equality and fairness for all, Ashley has a very bossy nature that can easily lead to her being domineering. Anyone who refuses to listen to her will quickly have her cut in and instruct them on what they should do like an angry young mother at a sporting match. This has lead to many people being very upset over her meddling ways, and often she pays for it in spades. But all it does is encourage her even further, and isn't above meddling and organizing her friends. Sometimes she even makes day planners for them, and they have no right to say 'no' after she spends hours organizing them. She is also extremely spiteful. Anyone who has gotten into her bad books will have to crawl on their bellies over hot broken glass to even get her to consider her to acknowledge their existence again. Granted not everyone gets this treatment (very close friends and family, for example), it is not ideal to provoke her. Or insult her. Or anyone else close to her. These grudges can in fact be rather legendary. Once a boy in primary school was blocked after he sent her a friend request on Facebook, because he didn't return an overdue library book. Another time someone asked her out on a date, which she declined (and also lectured him for a solid five minutes) since he broke up with a girl in high school in a way she did not agree with. Needless to say, you need to keep a rather strong moral code as long as you are friends with her. Ashley also can be rather harsh to those who are in conflict with her. While she tries to temper herself and bite her tongue, in arguments she can get rather brash and uncaring to what she says. She does not mean half the things she says while in this state, but thanks to her pride she'll often stick by it, far too ashamed to admit she overstepped herself. This was far worse when she was a teenager, especially in English classes where she would often get into heated debates about Shakespeare before starting to get horribly off-topic. On top of that, Ashley can be rather merciless as well. Especially when confronting people. Anyone who even dares lie to her will feel her wrath, as well as long speeches about how morals are important is the glue that keeps society together. It can get rather bad when she ends up chastising people who have done no wrong, and Ashley simply assumes otherwise. It would be no surprise either that Ashley is rather outspoken. Bluntly critical, she can be rather frank in saying what others would rather avoid even think about mentioning. In her eyes, the truth hurts, but the truth often needs to be said for anyone to move forward. Even if it means ruined friendships between her, or between two friends. Finally, she can be rather overcritical. After having such a strong attachment to the thought of being a police officer (or at least working with the police) for many years, Ashley tends to think that analyzing situations is often the best thing to do. Practice makes perfect, after all. Not only that, but she has been trying to learn and develop these skills ever since reading her first mystery novel. How else can she keep her skills sharp? Because of this, she tends to forget things are not like in her favorite mystery novels, and crimes are not so easily solved... nor are the solutions going to pop out into your face if you try and think of a creative story behind it. Many times she has looked into things far too much beyond what they are at face value, leading to assumptions that shouldn't be assumed, mistrusting people that should be trusted, and frankly causing problems for herself that simply are not there to begin with. This can get rather problematic for her, especially when she starts looking into social cues and thinking of who has feelings for whom in her social circle. She sometimes tries to set people up on dates who, unfortunately, are not compatible. All because she simply saw them exchange a glance, or a hand lingered for that millisecond too long against fingers... You never know though. 04. History It was a little odd for her parents at first. They grew up in a rather calm household with Ashley and her older brother, Ray. They interacted with her as any other young girl, bought her Barbie dolls, threw princess themed birthday parties, and enrolled her in a few gymnastics classes to try... but she wasn't growing up to be a typical young lady. Rather, she was drawn to things such as toy cars, birthday parties where you could play cops and robbers, and would rather play with various sporting balls than dance to music. Her parents were quick to adapt though, and were proud to see their young daughter chasing around her older brother with a fake toy gun at the age of four. This draw to 'boys toys' was simply due to Ashley wanting to be active. She did not want to passively sit down and play dress-ups or tea parties. While she enjoyed them for awhile, often they got boring. Also it stemmed from her older brother - she highly admired him, and would often shadow his interests and inherit his old toys once he outgrew them. However, it developed into something more when she couldn't sleep one night, and her parents were up watching a James Bond movie. Cuddling up between them, she watched in joy as boats exploded, cars did things that her mother's van couldn't do in real life, and how a man with a funny accent smooth talked his way into strange places with spinning tops and playing cards. While she found out much, much later that this character was a spy, the little girl thought he was a police officer. It was this that started Ashley's drive to start looking at what it meant to do the right thing, and start upholding the values of equality for all. On her first day of school, Ashley quickly established herself as a little girl made of nothing but spice and a very strong moral code. She would march up to children twice her size and yell at them for pushing kids into mud puddles. She quickly became the kind of girl that would see someone get the wrong end of the stick and decide to take the stick, snap it in half, and give equal pieces back to everyone. As she grew, her eyes would gleam with heightened interest whenever they talked about people in the community. She was always interested in police officers, and what they stood for, and hungered to know more. At her worst, Ashley would often go to the library and try to find books about law enforcement and the police. Granted they were too complex for an eight year old to read, but she enjoyed looking at the pictures of the men and women in their blue uniforms. As she grew older, she started to see the dark underbelly of the police force - the possibility of corruption, the violence, the fact everyone was always in danger when on duty... but it never phased her. If anything, it made her more determined to get involved in some shape or form. At the age of twelve she discovered Agatha Christie novels. She poured through Miss Marple and Poirot's adventures again and again, enthused and excited by every fictional mystery. It was here her love for mysteries started to grow and develop, branching to the stories by the "Queens of Crime" to Arthur Conan Doyle, then Edgar Wallace, Josephine Tey, and then any story she could get her hands on. She delved into books deeper when her brother started to act out, fighting with her parents as he started to seek for Independence. At first she tried getting involved and breaking up the fights fairly as she usually did... but for the first time she realized that this was probably a fight she could never resolve. To this day she considers it to be her greatest failure to repair the relationship between her brother and her parents. He left for Seattle as soon as he turned eighteen, leaving the household rather quiet and oddly vacant. Ashley turned her aggression towards her schoolwork, striving to only do her best. While her marks in the end were only above average, she was seen as a model student and was made a prefect in her final years of high school. Of course, her righteous nature often put her at odds with others (both students and teachers). Although it meant she always got a spot on the debate team every year. She would have the knack to isolate specific sentences from the other team and then verbally knock them down without much thought at all. However, he true love still stayed with mysteries, crime, and enforcing justice. Debating held no future for her. She followed her passions to university after graduation, moving out of home and obtaining an apartment at the university. While looking at potential courses, she was considering to do something in re guards to law. But then she saw a degree in criminology. It seemed to answer everything she wanted! As if all her life was leading up to this one moment! Without any hesitation, she signed up for it, and embarked on her future in criminology. She learned more than what she had ever hoped for in books at the library, fictional or not. It seemed natural for her to obtain a position as a detective, or a crime scene investigator. Surely with her passion and drive for it, she would be able to obtain such a position? After graduation she tried for an internship with the local police department. And failed. The local police department of Los Angeles simply was not looking for her. These roles were for people wanting to become officers, not detectives. Receiving the rejection email was horrible for the girl, as if her entire life had been shattered. If she wanted to get a job in the police department, she would have to move. Fortunately, that was not to be the case. A few days later, she received a phone call from the department. While they were not looking for any more interns, they were certainly looking for a receptionist. Her application noted that she had superb typing skills... She said 'yes' so loud and fast she probably deafened the poor person on the other end of the phone. And so here she is now. Only in the job for a few months, and loving every minute of it. However, that has not stopped her from keeping an ear to the ground and listening for anything she might be able to prove herself with. After all, this was something she knew she was born to do. All she had to do was prove it. 05. Trivia
