| rabbit - hearted I look around, but I can't find you If only I could see your face Instead of rushing towards the skyline I wish that I could just be brave I must become a lion hearted girl Ready for a fight Before I make the final sacrifice We raise it up, this offering We raise it up This is a gift, it comes with a price Who is the lamb and who is the knife? Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The ---- This wasn’t going to be so bad. It was the mall—she was supposed to like the mall. She was a teenager—almost an adult! Well, practically an adult. She was supposed to like shopping and window browsing and being out with people—yes. She would make this work. She had to make it work. If not, she was facing all kinds of trouble. She’d have to go back to the hospital, she’d have to sit in a white-washed room with orderlies who brought her sub-par food on a platter.
The mall—it was better than some insane asylum. Oh the doctors hated it being called that, but that’s what it was. It was a giant hospital for the mentally ill. Insane people. She wasn’t insane! She wasn’t, she really wasn’t. She was going to prove she wasn’t.
Emmeline Evans took a deep breath, swallowed the lump in her throat, and then slid out of the car. It was full, just like it always was, so they had to park far away. Her mother had decided to take her out shopping for new clothes, new accessories, maybe some new room decorations—whatever to make Emmie happy. Emmie of course hadn’t wanted to go, but she had no choice. It was try to get better or get stuck in that—in that crazy house.
She skittered quickly around the car and latched herself onto her mother’s jacket, shoulders hunched and eyes darting around wildly. Her mother cleared her throat and Emmie looked up. At the expression her mother wore, Emmeline straightened her back and let go of her mother’s jacket, exchanging it for the strap of her mother’s purse, hanging at her mom’s hip. She was not going to let go—if she did, she wouldn’t ever be able to find her mom.
They cruised from shop to shop, and soon, despite a lot of protesting from Emmie, they each had a bunch of shopping bags. Emmeline was a little worried that they didn’t have this kind of money, but her mom didn’t seem bothered so she dropped it.
“Hang on, mom,” Emmeline murmured, tugging a couple times on her mom’s purse before leaning down. Her shoe had gotten untied at some point, and she spent a couple seconds retying the little bow before picking up the couple shopping bags her mom had charged her with and stood back up. “Alright I’m ready to—Mom?”
Panic set in. Her mom wasn’t there. Just a writhing mass of mall crawlers.
“Mommy?” she squeaked, holding her shopping bags close. She whirled around and scanned benches, scanned people, but all she saw were unfamiliar faces—the same thing she always saw. Uknowns, blank faces, strange stares—nothing. She backed herself into a corner and shouted for her mom, but promptly shut her mouth when she got strange looks. She was a grown lady for crying out loud—she should be getting lost in the mall! That was for small children!
But she felt lost. She felt alone.
Emmeline backed herself into a wall, fighting back tears. How would she ever find her mom? She wouldn’t—she would just have to stay put. Wait until she spotted a woman shouting for her, looking for something. She tried her best until then—hair color, the same type of purse, a similar jacket—anything. But fear kept her sitting against that wall, knees to her chest and boding trembling.
This. This was why she didn’t go outside.

Hayden's eyes widened as he and Gabi stepped into the mall, taking in the sights and the sounds and the people! All the people from different walks of life, mothers and fathers and children and teenagers and old people all mingling together as they went about their own business, chattering and laughing and going about enjoying their day. A grin spread across his chiseled features as he noted a carousel ahead of him, and a man selling cotton candy next to it; this was like a fairground, almost! Not that-- not that he hadn't seen a mall before, or anything, but he hadn't been to one in a while. He turned to his best friend and gave her a wide grin. The last time he'd been at a mall, he had been with her, and she hadn't known that he would be leaving. Hayden had felt kind of guilty about not telling her, and he'd sat through the meal in awkward silence, and it had been obvious as day that something was wrong. But now he was out, now he was free, and he could enjoy himself with Gabi as much as he wanted now she knew the truth.
"Should we go and get ourselves some cotton candy?" he asked. Before waiting for a response-- yes, Hayden was taking initiative instead of waiting along-- Hayden walked up to the candy stand, waiting for Gabi to follow. "This one's on me, by the way, so you don't have to worry about it. I got the money working at a candy store," he smiled. It was undeniable that Hayden was much, much happier being alone than he had been in the suffocating cage he called home, and his glee was written all over his face. And as he marched ahead, he saw a girl. Blonde, like Leon was, with blue eyes like he had too. But she was backed into a wall, eyes brimming with tears. Hayden felt his chest lurch, and he found himself rushing up to her, taking a tentative step towards her in concern.
"Are you okay?" he asked. "What's wrong?"

The mall, the mall, let's have a ball at the mall!
Gabi wasn't one to go to the mall too often, unless she had friends with her. And even then, the only reason she would be interested in going was if they were going to get into trouble. Oh and trust her, she had gotten into her fair share of trouble. She'd just rather not get labeled as a mall rat like so many other girls her age, thanks. Oh but it wasn't like she was a hipster or anything, please! Just because she was on Tumblr didn't make her a hipster. Yeah, if anything she made fun of hipsters. Ironically. Wait, wasn't irony a hipster thing?
Fuck.
She had to admit though, she had never been in a mall quite this size before- she was impressed. The sheer number of stores was enough to make her head spin, and that was without the crowds of people walking by. The place was packed, and Gabi was just glad Hayden was so tall she could easily spot him, even if they got separated in a crowd.
One of the best things about going out with Hayden was that nearly everyone mistook them for siblings. Not one comment about what a cute couple they were. For all the world cared, they appeared to be a brother and sister duo, and Gabi didn't mind in the slightest; she'd much rather have them mistaken for being related than being in a relationship. The thought of kissing Hayden was totally gross. Not that she thought he was gross or anything, just that she loved him like a brother and wouldn't even dream of kissing him.
"I'm down for cotton candy." She replied, a skip in her walk as she followed just a step behind him. Another plus of having a tall friend built like a Greek statue: she could use him to part the crowds. No getting bumped and shoved over on Team Gabi, that's for sure! She raised her eyebrows at the back of his head at the mention of this treat being on him. Oh, she wasn't going to complain about him paying, it was the other tidbit that caught her interest. "You work at a candy store now? Dude, I seriously need to come visit you sometime!"
She really was glad he was so happy now though; the last few years had been really tough on Hayhay. To see him genuinely smiling for what felt like the first time in a long time was enough to make this trip worth it, in her opinion. Of course, that's not to say that she wasn't going to get into a little mischief while she was here---
When Hayden decided to take a sudden detour, Gabi scrambled to keep up, surprised by the change of course. Peering around him to see what had caught his attention, Gabi saw what, or more accurately, who he was heading towards. A blonde girl with tears in her eyes was backed against the wall, knees to her chest and body trembling in fear. The brunette frowned at the sight, slightly confused; what in the world had terrified the girl to such an extent? Gabi glanced at Hayden, but his attention was focused solely on the blonde as he asked her if she was okay. Oh well, looks like the cotton candy was being put on hold.
Bouncing so that she was next to Hayden, she asked, brightly, "Did someone steal something from you? Just point us in the right direction, and we'll go hunt them down!" What? Chasing down bad guys sounded like an extremely fun and productive thing to do today~!

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The ---- It was the looks that hurt the most.
She could ignore the pain in her chest, she could almost get over her initial fear, but she couldn’t get past the looks she caught people giving her. Some of them hesitated, as if they wanted to see what was wrong with her—but she could handle the pity. It was the looks of disgust that she couldn’t handle. Those people who gave her side-long glares, as if they loathed the very thought of her tears.
Most people ignored her and went about their lives. But the ones that detested her very existed—never mind the fact that most of the time she agreed with them. Most of the time she wished she would just stop existing.
Quick footsteps brought her attention up from the floor. Emmeline had just been trying to get herself together. She was practically a grown woman. What would her father say? Her mother would probably just start blubbering alongside her, but her father was embarrassed by her antics. He thought she was just using this whole thing as a crutch, trying really hard to make sure she wouldn’t ever have to leave the house. . . .
Emmeline could hear him now; “You’re nineteen years old, it’s time to grow a backbone!” and then he and her mom would get in a fight and she’d sit in her room, pretending not to hear, try to turn Netflix up louder so she wouldn’t hear them bicker about her. Her brother was the only one who tried to treat her normal. But still—she was certain their lives would be better without her.
Two people—teenagers? She couldn’t tell. Not without any real facial recognition. She quickly wiped away her tears and gathered up her shopping bags before standing up. Emmeline held her bags close to her chest and swallowed hard. They were both taller than her, but their build suggested they were at least her age, maybe—it was just so hard to tell. But the one thing that she couldn’t help but think—did she know these people? She couldn’t ever tell, not ever.
Though nervous, she managed to remember her manners and quickly nodded her head and forced a barely-passable smile. “I—I’m alright—n-nothing was stolen I just—I just—” Her gaze fell. Well, here it was. She had to explain that her grown-ass self had lost her mom—or maybe not. “I lost—I lost someone and I’m afraid—that—that I won’t be able to find them.”
If she could postpone the inevitable laughter, that would make her life worth living for just a few more moments.
Because the laughter was going to come. She just knew it. However, she was proud of herself. The pressure in her sinuses told her she was about to cry again, and stopping the tears was giving her a headache, but she was being strong. Or at least pretending to be strong.

tagged: failtwin, craycray. time: May 8th 2012, 17:00 speech: hayden. notes: knight is posting after me! She looked nervous. Hayden smiled, hoping that he would come across as reassuring. He could remember the first time he'd gotten lost in the mall-- he'd been fifteen, and had ended up being separated from Leon and Gabi in a large crowd. It had been nerve-wracking, to be so far away from the people that he had come with, and his phone had run out of battery. He'd been terrified out of his wits, in fact. In the end, he'd had to make his way to the information counter, and they'd had to make a P.A. announcement for Leon and Gabi to come and collect him. He could distinctly remember flushing bright pink as Gabi had come up to the counter and said that she was here for her lost puppy.
The woman had of course said that there weren't any lost dogs around. Hayden had immediately started to protest, saying that he was the lost dog, that he was the person who she was looking for, but by then both Gabi and the lady at the counter had burst into hysterical giggles as she 'returned Hayden to his rightful owner'. It had been embarrassing, and difficult... But at least he'd found his friends again, right? Besides, it had been worth it for the experience. He could even chuckle a little about it now. And no matter what, he was going to do his best to save the girl the embarrassment, though he would tell her to do that if need be! "Do you have a cell phone? Have you tried... Have you tried calling whoever you got lost from?" Hayden asked. "If you don't, but you have her number, you could borrow my phone!" Hayden asked, handing it over... And that was when he realised that the screen was completely black.
"Oh no..." he muttered, eyes going wide as he glanced at his phone. He really needed to get better at charging it, he really did-- what was the point of having a phone if you could never use it? "G- Gabi? Maybe you could lend her yours?" Hayden smiled uneasily. They really needed to find out who the girl got lost from and make sure she was okay, though. It was the right thing to do.

Unlike her companions, Gabi had never once particularly cared when she got lost from others. There had been countless times when she got separated from Hayden and Leon, or a date, or her parents, and she had simply gone off to do her own thing for an hour or two. She would always be found some time later, talking to a tattoo artist or making a purchase at a seedy shop. Any number of things. Getting lost was an adventure in and of itself, after all; you just couldn't sweat the small stuff.
This was an adventure itself, in a way. It was like a random encounter with a NPC in a video game, and you had to complete the quest in order to get to the next part of the story! It was a little disappointing to hear that nothing had been stolen, however. Gabi had kind of been looking forward to catching some bad guys. She drooped slightly at the revelation, before immediately recovering again at the blonde girl's next words. Oh, all hope wasn't lost just yet! "Were they kidnapped? Did you see the kidnappers? Did they have a weapon?" She fired off the questions rapidly, barely pausing for breath as she stared at the other girl intently.
At Hayden's questions, however, Gabi shot him a pout. He fit the good-natured hero bill perfectly, but he was going about this all wrong. Geez, didn't he know anything? Well, to be fair, he was pretty naive about how the world worked- and to be extremely fair, the way Gabi saw how the world worked was in stark contrast to most people. As he directed a question at her though, Gabi merely frowned. Slowly, she took her phone out of her bag, checking the screen without letting the others see it. She paused for a moment, before shaking her head and tucking her phone back into her bag.
"There's no reception in here anyway. Trying to make a call would be useless." She said with a shrug, glancing between the two of them with a cocked eyebrow. (Besides, what if the blonde chick was faking it, and the moment Gabi handed over her phone she ran off with it? She couldn't afford a new phone, and she couldn't afford to entrust something so important and expensive to a complete stranger.)
With a grin, she nudged into Hayden with her elbow, her demeanor taking a sudden 180. Those who knew Gabi over a long period of time were used to such antics, but anyone else would be taken aback by her complete (and oftentimes over dramatic) mood swings. "Besides Hayden, that's no fun at all. You're such a killjoy!" She announced cheerfully, as if the logical suggestion of calling the missing person in question was just plain silly. She beamed as she said, clapping her hands together excitedly, "It's a quest, obviously! We have to find whoever Blondie lost, and on the double!"

Emmeline swiftly shook her head, eyes wide. “Oh no—no no—no, nothing like that,” she said. What was with this girl? First stolen goods now a kidnapped family member? Oh she could just imagine someone trying to kidnap her mom—lots of yelling, lots of swearing, the guy probably getting smacked with her purse three dozen times. . . . it just wouldn’t work out.
Now, kidnapping Emmeline herself would be an easy task. . . .
Emmeline’s eyes widened ever so slightly at the mention of a phone. Of course! Why hadn’t she thought about that? She’d been too busy wallowing in her own self-pity and doubt that she forgot all about her dumb cellphone in her back pocket. That would have solved everything! She could just keep calling her mom until she picked up—her mother was notorious for not paying attention to her phone, but she would just keep trying. . . and trying and trying!
She was just about to reach for it, but the guy beat her to it and pulled out his own phone, offering it to her. Emmeline swallowed hard and forced another smile, pulling her hand away from her purse, where her phone sat at the bottom, and started to reach for it. “Oh—uh, I think I could remember—” Once again, she was cut off. The guy’s phone was dead.
This was terribly awkward for her. These two friends had such rapport with each other, and she was just standing there like a lemon, looking confused and probably quite similar to a frightened rabbit. Her head bobbed back and forth as the two had their little conversation. If it could even be called a conversation. It was just a few words, really.
It was still enough to make Emmeline uncomfortable.
Her face reddened slightly and she was quick to correct the other girl. “Emmie,” she squeaked, leaning forward slightly. “J-just call me Emmie.” Though not entirely insulted, she was still pretty sure that “Blondie” was supposed to be an insult. Because blondes were dumb, right? Was that still a thing? It was a thing when she was in high school—dumb blondes. She hadn’t ever been called Blondie before, though, but she wondered briefly what she had done to make this girl insult her like that. If it was supposed to be an insult. . . .

I don't know, take her to the help... Desk... And announce her name for the person to find her..." His voice trailed off as he spoke. Okay, that would undeniably be a bad idea. He remembered just how embarrassed he had been, and even though he was somewhat oblivious to certain cues he was definitely not insensitive. She seemed to be even more nervous and jittery than he was, and somehow announcing her name over the P.A. system would probably be even worse for her than it had been for him. "Never mind, forget that thought. But seriously, her friends are probably going to worry. Why don't we go to a pay phone or something?" His face lit up at the suggestion. Yes, that was clever! Hayden turned to Gabi with a grin. "And then you and I can go on an adventure of our own."
"Unless you want to come and join us? If... If that's okay with Gabi of course." he suddenly asked, his gaze returning to the other girl. "If the person you've lost doesn't mind, we can all go and do something together." That would be fun. She really did seem very sad, lost and alone, and Hayden didn't like seeing anyone feel like that. He'd felt small and unwanted for so long himself that he was determined to at least extend some sort of help or care to other people who were in the same boat. The boy extended a hand, offering it for her to shake.
"I'm Hayden. This is Gabi. Nice to meet you, Emmie. So what do you want to do from here?"

(There was no way Emmie could know this, but Gabi's nickname was in no way supposed to be an insult; that was just the way the girl was. On the contrary actually, she knew full well most blondes were not, in fact, stupid- take her other best friend, Leon, for example. He was practically a platinum blonde, as blonde as you could get, and he was probably the smartest person she had ever met in her life.)
Gabi dismissed most of what Hayden said with a flap of her hand. Really, he was just being silly. Who didn't want to go on an adventure? (Most sane people, Gabrielle.) Her eyes did widen with shock, however, at the suggestion that left her best friend's lips. "Hayden, do you want to embarrass her?" She asked indignantly, suddenly all the knight in shining armor coming to the poor girl's defense. Honestly, he should know better, sheesh.
And she practically laughed out loud at his next suggestion, though she managed to stop herself at the last minute. She held a hand up to her mouth to keep her giggles in, and it wasn't until she was absolutely positive that she had herself under control that she finally managed to ask, "And payphones still exist?" Really, he almost made it too easy for her sometimes. "I'm pretty sure any payphone we manage to find is going to be an artifact from some past civilization. We'll probably have to use those special brushes like they do on the Discovery Channel just to unearth one. And once we do people will be paying out of their nose just for a chance to touch the thing. They're going to say it's a national treasure, and we'll be rich and famous." She abruptly stopped, shrugging her shoulders carelessly and rocking back on her heels. Well, it was true!
She spared the blonde a cheery glance as she told them her name, replying with a jaunty nod that sent her brown curls bouncing around her face. "Emmie Emmie Emmie... MnM!" She chirped happily, clapping her hands together gleefully like a child at the new nickname. Striking a pose, Gabi declared, loud enough to draw stares from passer-by, "Our best option right now is to search the mall!" She shot the girl a thumb's up, eyes sparkling merrily as she said, "Don't worry MnM, we'll help you out!" Because that's what knights did!!!

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Her face paled at the mention of the intercom. That was the last thing she needed—having some stranger announce to the whole mall that she missing her mom. She was a practically grown woman for Pete’s sake. How would she ever live that one down? She could just imagine the looks and the thoughts people would give her. It made her knees weak just thinking about it.
But the other girl—Gabrielle—was on her side. No announcement to the whole mall, good. She didn’t want to agree that it would be embarrassing, but the thing was meant for lost children, not lost nineteen-year-olds. Even if they used something vague and just told her mom to come to the help desk, she still would have to explain eventually. . .
Oh god. What if her mom was going to go to the front desk and call her up?
No, no. That would be better. A mother calling for her child was also normal. People might think that she just wandered off without telling her mom and her mom freaked out like mothers tend to do. Alright, that’s what she would wait for. For her mother to call for her. That was their best shot. It wasn’t like she was going to be able to pick her mom out of the crowd for these two, even though they were very nice for helping her out. She’d have to give them something to work with, though.
Emmeline made a slight face at her new nickname, but it wasn't that bad. MnM's were delicious candy, right?
“Um—thank you. I really appreciate it.” Crap. She was going to have to try to remember what her mom looked like. “She uh—she’s a little taller than me, blonde hair in a ponytail. . . . Um, she’s wearing a green suede jacket and has a, um, a black purse she keeps. . . on her elbow. And—Um, I guess she looks kind of like me, but older.”
Hopefully they just thought it was an older sister, but she had to give them more than just the clothes her mom was wearing. An older sister was much better than her mom. Oh she was just so weird.

tagged: failtwin, craycray. time: May 8th 2012, 17:00 speech: hayden. notes: knight is posting after me! Oh dear, now he'd gone and done it. Hayden felt the colour drain from his face as well at Emmie's reaction to the intercom. "N- no, don't worry, we realised that it was a bad idea too," he said, shaking his head. "It's not going to happen, we won't let that happen to you." As for the pay phone idea, Hayden chuckled at the thought. Gabi was definitely right: it was probably nearly impossible to find one out here. "Hey, you're pretty good at finding relics that sell for a lot on eBay though. I mean, wasn't there the last time when you sold something and gave the profits to me--"
Wait. Those had been his Speedos. The legendary Unlucky Swimmer BoyTM Speedos, the originals that had split at the swim tourney where his claim to Internet fame had begun. Never mind. He wasn't going to say any more, come to think of it-- that would just be encouraging her, and that would be a bad, bad idea indeed. Then again, Gabi was increasingly starting to remind him of one of the Bad Idea Bears from that musical, Avenue Q. Cute and fluffy but full of ideas that would make him want to cry. Unfortunately, he had always related to Princeton, and he ended up following their ideas more often than not. Though he couldn't find a catch in this one at all, could he?
"Okay, let's search the mall!" Hayden declared. This they could do. There was no way for Gabi to mess this one up. "So is she your older sister? By the way, Gabi isn't my sister, in case you were wondering. I know people always say we look the same and sometimes we tell people we're related, but no, she's just a really good friend. My best friend, in fact, or one of them at least. Maybe one day you'll meet Leon too, who's really smart. Leon knows everything."

She nudged him in the side as he laughed at her words, grinning herself. Hayden tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end- Gabi visibly perked up at the mention of relics on Ebay. What's this, what's this? Was Hayden actually bringing up that topic of discussion in public? What a great day! "Oh, you mean the-"
A hand shot out and covered her mouth, effectively drowning out anything she might have said in front of Emmie. Really now, it was just a silly picture that just happened to go viral. So his butt was an Internet icon that had been seen by millions of people! He should be proud! He needed to take that stick out of his ass and live a little! It wasn't that big of a deal!! Besides, this was years ago, most people had probably forgotten about it by now. Maybe. Possibly.
(Not.)
Gabi shot him a glare, then proceeded to promptly lick his hand. There, that would show him for treading on her Third Amendment rights to freedom of speech! (Or was it Fourth Amendment? Or Fifth? Shit shit banana split, she had no clue.) Whatever, either way she let it drop for now, though she made sure to stick her tongue out at him in retaliation. That would show him to respect his elders!
Turning her attention back to Emmie, Gabi nodded sagely, arms crossed over her chest as the other girl listed what her Missing Person looked like. "An older version of you, huh?" The brunette cast a critical glance over the blonde, before shooting her a beaming grin. "I bet she's hot!" Gabrielle Alberts: inadvertently calling moms hot since 1993.
"Hayden, don't go spilling all our secrets!" She wailed, genuine distress leaking into her tone. That was one of their deepest, darkest secrets that only a few people knew! How could he?! Shaking her head, she turned back to Emmie, beaming as she said, "Don't worry MnM, we'll find them!" Suddenly, the smile vanished in replace of a grimace, her eyes becoming haunted and her tone downright frigid. "Even if it kills us..." She mumbled softly, before all at once brightening back up again, bouncing in place excitedly.
"Okay okay, enough dilly-dallying! First things first- we have to go to the food court!" She declared loudly, pumping her fist in the air with about as much enthusiasm as a professional cheerleader.
Who's got spirit?!

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- There was some sort of weird, telepathic, code-talk moment between the two friends and Emmeline stood there blinking slowly, mouth slightly parted, and eyes darting between the two. She’d opted to stay silent, and was a little too confused to giggle. She didn’t know what was going on, but she knew that it was some friend moment. You shouldn’t interrupt friend moments. Though she couldn’t help but wonder if she’d ever have friend moments like this.
She opted to stay silent once again and not point out that there was a payphone by the bathrooms. She’d seen one at Wal-Mart, too. They weren’t as rare as these kids were thinking—kids. Why’d she think of them as kids? They were probably her age. . . .
Emmeline wanted to smack herself in the forehead.
“Um, kinda. . . ,” she trailed off. Her mother tended to act more like a sister at times than a mom, but she was a good mom still. She trotted after them, her head swinging slightly so she could look, too. She could at least recognize the jacket and purse her mom wore, and she was well-versed in the way her mom stood and what her form looked like—it was often what she had looked for first even before her condition—body type.
Another tidbit of information was pulled from her head and Emmeline caught up with the other two, but remained a couple steps behind them so as not to intrude on their friend time any more than she already was. “Her name is, um, Joan, by the way.” It was weird saying her mom’s name out loud, but it might come in handy. They’d have to call her mom something when they found her.
When they found her. . . . Suddenly Emmeline wasn’t looking forward to that. Her mom was probably besides herself with worry and would maybe do something to embarrass her. . . . Well, too late for that. Maybe she should have sent these nice people on a wild goose chase for a thief. No—No that wasn’t an option either. That would just be too mean and Emmeline would eventually have to tell them the truth—maybe. They never would have found a thief and she would have just called the search off eventually. . . .
Well, too late for that.

Before she could say any more about his torn Speedos and his presence on the Internet, Hayden had managed to bound over to where he was standing and cup his hand over her mouth. No, no. Emmie was not going to hear about this. Nobody had heard about this. Truth be told, Hayden might have been a little angry if Gabi had turned him into an Internet meme today, and might even have called her out on it, but he had been fourteen and a doormat at the time. She'd been fourteen too, and he wasn't about to get mad at her for something she'd done back then, but still. For a brief moment there was silence, and then he felt something wet and clammy on the hand that was covering Gabi's mouth. He turned towards her to see an impish expression on her face, and his eyes widened with shock when he realised that she had licked it.
"That's just gross! Gabi, what the hell?" Hayden exclaimed, before lunging over to attempt to wipe his hand on her shirt. Hey, it was her saliva, she could deal with the consequences of licking him. But she had since moved on to chastising him about spilling one of their biggest secrets, and Hayden pulled a face. "All's fair in love and war, and you almost spilled one of my secrets, too. Pot, meet kettle, anyone?" Two weeks could change a man, and it was clear as day that his short stint in Los Angeles had definitely transformed Hayden for the better.
But now it was time to get looking, get going. "Joan, huh?" Hayden asked, marching towards the food court. He was a man with a mission right now, and he was going to find her sister for her. "Okay, shall we split up? Or shall we look together? And then we can meet near the entrance in about fifteen minutes.

A loud gasp escaped her lips as a dainty hand flew up to her mouth, her eyes wide and her expression one of shock as she stared up at her friend. He could have murdered her entire family right before her eyes, with the way she was looking at him. "Hayden John Green, did you just use the h-word?" She asked indignantly, hands now on her hips as she frowned at him. All was fair in love and...? "And I'd hardly call it a secret, seeing as how so many people know about-"
She cheerfully dodged out of the way of his hand, a cheeky grin on her face as she remarked, "That'll be a dollar for the swear jar, sir." Nevermind the fact that they had never had a swear jar to begin with.
They had a job to do, though, and Gabi became serious as they made their way to the food court. It was the most *logical* first place to look; if you were going to find someone in the mall, chances were they were either going to pass by or stop at the food court at least once. It was a central point, and it served perfectly as the first place for them to look! "Never split up! That's the first rule of a search and rescue!" She sang, coming to a stop and sweeping her gaze across the crowds of people. Damn, the place was packed. This would be tough.
The mention of a name from Emmie immediately gave Gabi a brilliant idea. "Her name's Joan? Excellent." Without a second thought, Gabi skipped up to one of the benches around the mall, ignoring the flustered look of the woman sitting there as she stepped up on top of it. There, that gave her an excellent view. Cupping her hands over her mouth, Gabi shouted, as loudly as she could, "Joan? JOAN? JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAN?"
Hmm, nothing.
She frowned and tapped a finger against her bottom lip, not noticing the woman abandoning her seat and fleeing away from the bench. What now... a knot of people caught her eye, and Gabi stood on tip-toe to get a better look. A fox mascot was standing in the center of mall-goers, posing to take pictures with children. An idea hit her like a brick. Maybe Joan was over there, milling around that mascot?
Hopping down off the bench, Gabi bounced back to her companions, hazel eyes dancing excitedly as she said, quickly, "Hayden, MnM, investigate over there." She pointed to the fox, the gears in her head working fiercely to catch up with her train of thought. "She might be in there. I'm going to check over there." She waved vaguely somewhere behind her, then clapped her hands together. "Ready, break!" And with that, not bothering to wait and see what they said, the brunette ran off into the food court, leaving the pair behind.

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- They headed off toward the food court, Emmeline deciding not to participate in their little friend moment. None of it made sense anyway, they were obviously sharing some inside joke and Emmeline certainly wasn’t going to try to pry her way into that one. That was rude and she had just met them, it wasn’t like they were going to let her in on their special joke, and Hayden obviously didn’t want her to know anyway.
That was fine. They didn’t have to like her. It was good enough that they were helping her find their mom.
The noise of the mall got a little louder when they finally reached the food court. She scanned, looking for any familiar sign of her mother. To think her mom really could have wandered off this far without doubling back to find her daughter. . . but her mom could be scatter-brained at time. She probably had a whole conversation before realizing that Emmeline wasn’t even there.
She was glad they had decided not to split up. What was the point of helping her if they all went their separate ways?
Of course, she would never say that out loud.
Her heart sank when she watched Gabi climb up onto a bench and chase off the poor woman sitting there. She leaned slightly toward Hayden so she could be heard and asked, “What is she doing?” with a very small voice. It was practically rhetorical—already Gabi was shouting her mom’s name for everyone to hear. Emmeline tried her best to make herself look small, as if Gabi’s shouting was draw everyone’s eyes straight back to her and not to Gabi.
What kind of reasoning that was not even Emmeline knew, but she felt as if everyone was looking at her, judging her for being even associated with this girl. It was stupid, but it was how she felt—but eventually Gabi gave up and got back down. It was kind of upsetting that it hadn’t worked.
Emmeline to looked to Gabi and Hayden for more ideas, and before she knew it Gabi was telling them to go look around the fox mascot. Then, she was running off somewhere. Emmeline wanted to ask if she was always like this, but fear of upsetting one of them kept her mouth firmly shut. Instead, she asked a safer question. “Should we follow her? Didn’t she say. . . no splitting up?”

tagged: failtwin, craycray. time: May 8th 2012, 17:00 speech: hayden. notes: knight is posting after me! It was a secret, it was! Nobody knew who Unlucky Swimmer Boy actually was save for the people at his school, who had heard about it from the swim team. Granted, everyone at school had laughed at him for the remainder of the school year and he'd had random seniors going up to him, asking him to autograph their yearbooks, but still, it was largely a secret: nobody had sold his identity to the press yet, or anything. Though Gabi had had a blast acting like his press agent, and even tried to get a bunch of seniors to line up for an autograph until Leon had stopped in his tracks and said No. Speaking of Gabi, she had pointed out that he was swearing. Dang-
"Fine," Hayden muttered, pulling out his wallet to hand a dollar over to Gabi. It wasn't that he was against swearing, but the two of them had started the swear jar gag back in high school and now every time Hayden swore, he would hand Gabi a dollar. Granted, he didn't lose money to her very often, but it was still kind of funny. "It's a long story," he began explaining to Emmie, but before he could say anything more, Gabi had declared that they would not split up... And then proceeded to run ahead. Hayden shrugged, turning to her with a sheepish expression on his face.
"Just... Yeah, stick with me," Hayden nodded. "I don't think this completely counts as splitting up? Since we'll all still be in sight of each other. It should be okay." According to Gabi's instructions, he walked over to the direction of the fox, slowing his pace so that Emmie could follow him. It seemed like she was as lost right now as he felt on a regular basis, so he could most definitely relate to what she was going through. He shot her a small smile.
"Relax. Everything's going to be okay. Mm?"
Or well, everything would be okay if Gabi didn't decide to do something crazy.
"Let's stick together, but we can start looking. Can you describe her a little more to me? How tall is she? What does she look like...?"

(Accompanying background music.)
The art of sneaking through a crowd was to not be obvious you were sneaking through a crowd. You had to ~*blend in.*~ No one should be able to pick you out from a group of people and go, 'yup, that girl is definitely up to no good, arrest her immediately for treason.'
The brunette was currently making her way through the food court, dodging around people and glaring at everyone who walked past. Hmm, no one fit the description so far. This was going to be harder than she thought! She half-wondered if she should shout for Joan again, but decided against it; she was trying to be sneaky, after all, and sneaky people didn't shout out woman's names in the middle of a food court.
She did come to a stop though, frowning and pulling on her bottom lip in thought. She wasn't getting anywhere in this search and rescue. She needed a new strategy. Gotta think outside the box. They were never going to find the mysterious hot woman if they didn't put all their brain power to it- wait she had split up from the others. Shit.
Her gaze traveled back across the food court, to the fox mascot she had pointed out to Hayden and MnM. He was dancing around now, much to the delight of the watching children. A light bulb went off upstairs, and Gabi knew exactly what she had to do. It was so simple. So easy.
She had to unmask the fox.
Joan was the fox. Plot twist of the century. Why hadn't she thought of it sooner? But in order to pull this off, she had to be the sneakiest she had ever been in her life. Glacing behind her to make sure there were no mall cops lurking around, Gabi began to make her way towards the crowd of people around the fox. She had to be as swift as a coursing river. With all the force of a great typhoon. With all the strength of a raging fire. Mysterious as the dark side of the moon.
Using the people milling around the food court as cover, Gabi managed to get behind the fox. He was now posing with a small child for a photo; if Gabi had anything to say it, not for much longer. Without hesitation, she stood up on tip-toe and grabbed the head firmly between her hands, and proceeded to pull the head off the fox.
It was like something out of Scooby Doo, and it was beautiful.
Except the culprit of the day wasn't under the mask. Gabi frowned as the gathered group of people began to react, either gasping or screaming at the man behind the mask. Glancing up, she found Hayden and Emmie a fair distance away, and shouted, "Guys, this isn't Joan!" The man was beginning to clumsily turn to face her, so it was about time to skidaddle. Dropping the head, she made a run for it, gracefully moving through the crowd until she reached MnM and Hayden. "Time to go." She remarked cheerily, not pausing to wait.

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Emmeline nodded and obediently followed after Hayden, heading toward the giant dancing fox. Well it wasn’t so giant, but the head was a good few feet tall so it made him look pretty giant. Emmeline didn’t know why they had to go to the mascot—was it so Gabi could find them easier after she did her little search? That was the only thing that made sense: her mother wouldn’t be over there. . . . Well these two didn’t know that, but Emmeline did and it didn’t make sense to her.
But she went anyway. What else could she do?
Hayden asked for a better description of her mom and Emmeline bit her bottom lip. She’d given all she could, there was no way she was going to remember any more details about her mom. Well—she could at least give height. She lifted her hand a little bit above her own head and said, “Well—um, about this tall and, um—blonde hair in a—um, ponytail today and—um. . . green jacket. . . um, black purse. . . um. . . yeah.” She didn’t quite realize that she had already said all of that.
But it was the best she could do. Now that Gabi was gone, she probably wouldn’t even be able to describe what Gabi looked like. It always looked different, everyone’s face did. The moment they turned away from her and looked back, their old face was gone and was replaced by this new, strange look.
She glanced around. Maybe she could describe her a little different. She swallowed and pointed to a lady standing off to the side, watching her kid take pictures with the fox. “She um—has that lady’s body type and—um—she stands like that lady, um, over there.” Emmeline pointed to another lady. She already certain that neither was her mom: the first had black hair, and the second had long blonde hair that went all the way to her lower back.
Before she could go into any further detail, the fox’s head was popped off by someone with a similar hairstyle to Gabi’s. Some of the kids laughed at the poor guy behind the mask, a few shuffled away in fear, obviously having thought that the fox was an actual fox and not some guy in a costume, and some were ushered away by concerned parents.
“Aw—someone took off his head,” she observed.
Then, the culprit called out to them.
Emmeline blanched. It wasn’t just some girl with a similar hairstyle to Gabi, it was Gabi, and now a few people looked in the direction that she had called, and Emmeline felt like all eyes were on her. Unconsciously she started to back up a couple paces. Her breathing started to get a little shallow and she couldn’t stop the trembling from starting in her hands. Everyone was going to be so angry with them—they were associated with Gabi, so they would all get in trouble for this shenanigan.
They were going to be mad at her. Her mother would be picking her up from the back where the mall cops kept shoplifters, people were going to point and stare and talk about her, she would never be allowed in the mall again. . . . She never should have left the house!
In a moment of a clarity, Emmeline managed to pull a bottle of pills from her purse—her beta-blockers. She had to get her heart rate normal, she had to stop the trembling, she had to calm down and think straight—none of this silly business. This was what she and her therapist had worked on, this is what she took those sessions for—to understand these situations better, to be able to handle them in a more. . . stable manner.
But first.
She turned and jogged a couple paces away from Hayden and Gabi while twisted off the child-proof cap, then stopped when she was out of the crowd. She shook a couple of the pills into her palm and popped them into her mouth, swallowing hard. Emmeline took so many pills that she was used to it by now and could take them dry if she needed to. Once they were down, she leaned over and put her hands on her knees and just worked on breathing, getting her heart rate back down and her breathing back to normal levels.
Were they being chased? Should she keep running? Her heart rate had been increasing ever since Gabi had started shouting, and that little display had tipped her poor, frayed nerves over the edge. She closed her eyes tight, trying to block out the image of disapproving looks from strangers.

tagged: failtwin, craycray. time: May 8th 2012, 17:00 speech: hayden. notes: knight is posting after me! It made sense to make their way to the fox. Gabi would find them, right? It would mean that they were easy to spot from where Gabi would be. With their declaration earlier that they weren't going to split up, it made sense that Gabi would go a short distance away, but they would all stay somewhat close to each other. Hayden nodded as Emmie provided him with descriptions of Joan, even mentioning her stance and her body type. "Okay, I'll keep a look out while we wait around here," he said. "Don't worry, this is all going to be all right--"
A loud shriek pierced through the air.
Hayden immediately turned towards the source of the noise. It was by the fox. Which was where Gabi had gone. And now the fox's head was gone, and the person inside the mascot was stumbling about like a drunk. Children were screaming, adults were whispering frantically, and Gabi was running, running towards them, darting away. Hayden's jaw practically dropped when he realised what she had done.
"Not again..."
This wouldn't have been the first time that they'd almost gotten arrested. Hayden groaned a little, but he had a gut feeling that they would get out of this. He'd been in enough situations similar to this to know that Gabi would wrangle her way out, she always did. It still meant that they were going to have to run, run like the wind though, and Hayden picked up his pace, noticing that Emmie had pulled out a bottle of pills from her bag. Now his eyes widened. Was she sick? Allergic to something? Why was she taking medicine when they were trying to get away?
"Emmie, we have to get away, we don't have the time--" Before he could say any more, the girl rushed off. Hayden shot Gabi a sideways glance. Were they far enough from the pandemonium that they wouldn't be spitted? But still, he couldn't just leave her alone. Children were running and security was rushing to the scene, and they were probably far enough that they wouldn't be caught.
"We should go make sure she's okay." With that, Hayden darted up to the blonde, who was in a corner, her hands on her knees, scrunched up into what looked almost like the fetal position. The brunette gulped, taking a deep breath. Was he supposed to approach her? Was this a good idea? What was he supposed to do in a situation like this? He took a tentative step towards the girl.
"A- are you okay? We... We-- we're safe. Maybe. I don't know," he sputtered. They probably were, but he'd never know. He really wouldn't, not when it came to Gabi.
