It looked like it. She hadn’t known those were real things, always thought they were just a little subtown that movies and tv shows made up. But here she was. . . it was weird. But whatever. She was ditching school and her feet just took her wherever they would go.
She just hoped she would be able to find her way home again. However, she wasn’t too worried about it.
It wasn’t so bad here. The streets were crowded, it wasn’t as dirty as the movies tended to make out, and no one paid her any attention, even though she very much looked like she needed to be in school. Maybe no one cared. Ronni was on a mission, anyway. She had stuff to do, things to find and grift. She wouldn’t be able to get any food unless she got damn lucky, but she wasn’t that hungry anyway.
Finally she spotted a prime target and ducked down a little alleyway then walked up to a little car wash place. It seemed pretty empty, and the machine that took people’s quarters was around the building. No one was getting their cars washed, to it was perfect. Ronni scouted for prying eyes, then opened her backpack (she’d finally managed to purloin a new backpack). After prying around inside she managed to find the knife she kept hidden away for those clutch moments, then carefully pried open the coin catch.
Quarters spilled out and Ronni shoved as many as she could into her backpack while keeping her eye out. This wasn’t going to solve their money problems but at least they would be able to do laundry pretty regularly for a while. . . hopefully.
It wasn’t long before she started getting angsty and decided that she had gotten enough and had stayed longer than she was comfortable. She zipped up her backpack and tried a nonchalant walk across the street.

Work work work! Leila, being the busy little worker that she was, had managed to accumulate over 55 hours last week. Not used to working so heavily she ended up overworking her body and she still hadn't been able to rest up enough. The past weekend she spent with friends and family, and she was quite physically active then too. But now, in the quiet of her shop, she walked in and dismissed her one-man staff, giving her the rest of the day off. Leila grabbed an extra set of clothes (without the oil and grease stains, of course) and changed quickly, trying to hurry. Her stomach was ruling right now and she was ready to get something to eat!
Just 20 minutes later she was already on foot, browsing around Koreatown looking for somewhere to eat. Somehow between getting lost in thought and just walking around she became lost. In a back alley. Not that she was scared or anything, but it was definitely not somewhere she was trying to go. It was odd, too, because she knew her way around fairly well. Guess I'm even more tired than I thought...Phew need to eat, get home, take this bra off and just relax!
But she heard the sound of change falling. A lot of change. That wasn't something normally heard in these parts...Curious, Leila turned the corner and followed where she thought the sound came from. In front of her, bending down on the ground and picking up change, Leila caught sight of a young teenager standing and walking away. She didn't think twice about what happened next or how she could have gotten arrested. Heck she didn't even think period! In a swift motion, her hand moved about her body and produced a wrench (from only God knows where) and chucked it at the girl, knowing that she couldn't have been up to any good. The psychotic mechanic shouted at her also hoping to catch her off guard. HEY! What do you think you're doing you little punk!!?" Her high-pitched voice carried through the air effortlessly as she ran toward the teenager, wondering if she had managed to nail her good.

That was all Ronni could ask for—if someone saw her, they weren’t doing much about it—well at least for a few seconds that’s what she thought. Ronni thought for sure she was going to get away, do some laundry, try to tell her dad that she totally didn’t steal all of these quarters—Ronni knew he knew, though. She came home with all kinds of stuff they needed sometimes, and he would half-heartedly lecture her, but she never got in trouble.
It wasn’t like they could do much else. He was too big of a pansy to steal the stuff himself, and Ronni barely ever got caught. . . .
Ronni tensed up and prepared for battle when a loud clang sounded off too close for comfort. She’d seen the wrench come sailing at her from the corner of her eye and prepared herself to get hit, but it went a little wide. Already Ronni was tense and on high alert, and now someone was throwing stuff at her? It was enough to turn her extremely hostile.
Someone called out to her, and now she had an outlet for all of this hostility.
Her backpack was heavy and she heaved it back up onto her shoulder, scanning only briefly until she spotted the person in question. “Hey, bitch, did you just throw a fucking wrench at me?” she demanded, free hand on her hip—the other one was keeping her backpack up—and posture full of attitude. Ronni wasn’t the type of person to run, and this lady had cast the first stone—uh, well, wrench. “What fucking business is it of yours what the fuck I’m doing?”
Oh she was ready for a fight. She might have been small, but if this chick was going to do much else but yell and throw things, well Ronni wasn’t afraid of kicking her ass if she needed to—or getting her own ass kicked. But she never went down without a fight.

Oh this kid...Leila had little patience for snotty-nosed girls who thought that could do whatever they wanted and get away with it. While Leila was definitely no fighter in life, she was not one to easily back down from a challenge of any sort. Standing her ground, she unclenched her fists and took a deep breath.

Okay counting was only doing so much for her. Just seeing that girl with her bag of change irritated Leila. For one, it becomes my business when you intrude on the well-being of others. Do you know what you're doing? You're taking away money from others who probably need it more than you do. Whatever you think gives you the right to do that anyway?" She was starting to get worked up again, just seconds after she was starting to calm down. It was becoming rather difficult to stay cool.
"Look, you're right. It's none of my business what you do. But when you start doing stuff that effects other people, it's a problem. What business do you have taking something that doesn't belong to you?" Leila was trying to reach out to her, but...her usual compassionate self wasn't really "getting it" today. Instead it was taking a back seat with popcorn, waiting to see the show that was about to unfold. Leila honestly hoped it would not come to this, but she did throw that wrench...bad move on her part probably. But if she needed to she would be involving law enforcement. And she had no problem keeping up with this girl either; Leila was in fantastic shape thanks to her active lifestyle.

Ronni’s brows raised a little higher on her forehead and she looked a little insulted at this person’s presumptuous attitude toward her. Was that really how she felt? Could she not tell by the scruffy state of her clothes, how lifeless her hair was, and the smudges of dirt covering her body—and the fact that she wasn’t in school even though that was a totally unrelated matter entirely—that maybe she did need these quarters?
Well, Ronni felt it was her duty to correct this woman. In fact, Ronni usually felt it was her duty to correct everyone, even if she was wrong. She could bully her way into being right and out-stubborn most people even if she wasn’t the most book-smart (or even street smart, if you go into details and technicalities) person in California. Or maybe the country.
Maybe she should study more.
“Actually,” she started, voice dripping with contempt. “I do fucking need it. I live in a fucking van across the city with my dead-beat father and we need to do some fucking laundry. Is that okay with you, bitch? Huh? What are you gonna fucking do about it, anyway?”
Hmph. That’ll show her.
“Go ahead and call the fucking cops. I’ll be long fucking gone by then!” She didn’t have time for this. Well, technically she did have the time for it but it was way too irritating for her to want to put up with it much longer. This lady—coming over here riding her high horse and trying to trample all over her with it. Who did this stranger think she was coming over here and making all kinds of assumptions and lecturing her? If there was one thing Ronni hated (and there were a lot of things Ronni hated), it was being lectured by someone who wasn’t her dad.

There wasn't much else that could be done with her. Leila had seen girls like her at school; stubborn as hell, somewhat annoying, and very loud. Though the young woman couldn't help but to feel sorry for her at the same time. It didn't sound like she was getting any love from her family, and what little family she did have didn't sound like they were the best influences. It was as if the entire world fell upon her shoulders at this point, and now this teenager was making sure to put extra pressure on it. You know, just in case. Her heart honestly went out to this girl, but chances were slim for her to accept help especially after the ordeal she just made it out to be.
"I just don't want to see you have to struggle like that. It's just...well, you shouldn't have to. Can I give you some money instead? Just leave the change and I'll make it up with that and maybe even more." She was trying to get her to put down the change, but deep down she would have felt an insane amount of guilt if she hadn't offered to pay her what she would be losing out on. Sure it was none of her business, and she fully accepted that. But she wanted to make it her business. Leila shifted her weight to her right side, opening her posture a bit. Her black hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail, draping over her shoulder and down to her chest. Her eyes focused on Ronni's eyes, hoping to ease the anger in the young woman. She wanted her to know how gentle she could be (despite first impressions) and she had hoped something would change with her.
From previous experience, though, that was likely to be negatory.

This girl was a little waffly, wasn’t she? Couldn’t stick to her guns—not like Ronni. Though, Ronni had almost counted on her changing her tune the moment Ronni mentioned her home situation. That was why she told her after all, but the total elapsed time was barely a sneeze’s length. Ronni had prepared a whole speech within seconds, and now it was all wasted.
It was irritating, but in the long run she supposed that made it worth it. Now she didn’t have to waste that time ranting on like she’d planned.
That offer, though.
At first Ronni wasn’t sure what to think about it. Like a cornered wolf that thought it found a way out, she fidgeted and paced slightly a few steps at a time, eyes watching this lady. She could just make a break for it, but she was curious—and it was only this lady. If someone else showed up she’d probably just bolt, but for now she figured she was safe.
Unless this girl was stalling until the police showed up. Feh.
Fuck the police.
“What’s the difference between taking your fucking money or taking this fucking money?” she asked. Despite the combination of words, Ronni wasn’t trying to be hostile this time. She was now in casual swearing mode. It was a little irritating shouting back and forth to each other but Ronni wasn’t about to move closer. What if this chick had another wrench? She wasn’t about to move closer and risk getting a point-black wrench to the face.
She narrowed her eyes. “And why were you carrying around a fucking wrench?”

Leila wasn't sure if she was sensing it correctly, but she was hoping that this young woman was now trying to change her attitude a little. Leila had to keep going because she didn't want her to bolt; in fact, that was probably Leila's biggest fear (besides getting her butt kicked - she was tough, but definitely not a fighter). The mechanic watched her carefully, wanting to approach her and simply hand her some money and send her on her way. She wanted to tell her that she would be praying for her and that she hoped everything would turn out okay. She wanted to honestly just hug the poor girl because it came across as though she had never experienced the true love of a parent or friend.
But, as hostile as she was in this situation, Leila didn't dare take any chances. She had some knowledge of behaviors and how people thought from life experiences, but that was honestly about it. Not once had Leila ever found herself needing to steal just to make it through another day. Her eyes drifted down toward the bag the young woman held so closely, trying to imagine how much money was actually in there. It had to be a good amount, and for Leila to offer that same amount plus some would really put her close to going over her monthly budget. It might even force her to tap into her savings account; after all, she had just paid bills and bought groceries and everything, and her funds were definitely limited to gas and the occasional drink from a convenience store.
Something inside of her stirred, and she knew that she needed to do this. She knew that she might have to go and get some ramen noodles on her next grocery bill, or she could even work overtime and accumulate some extra cash if needed. Right now, though, she was going to give this young girl enough to hopefully get them by for the next little while. Instead of approaching her, Leila called out to her again, trying to keep the "pity" tone out of her voice. "It's not just taking my money, dear. I'm offering to give it to you because I want..." She faltered a bit, trying to find the right words to say. "I want you to not have to steal anything, even if it is temporarily. I want you to know that this might be a cruel world, but there are people in it who aren't. I want you to know that I hope things get better for you. I want to help you in whatever way that I can." The last bit came out a bit softer than before, but she was sure that her voice carried to the teen anyway.
At the mention of the wrench, Leila couldn't help but to let loose a small giggle. "I'm a mechanic. Probably one of the cheapest in Los Angeles, actually. And being that I'm a single woman I figure I might need to defend myself. So...I keep a wrench or two hidden on me at times. Silly, huh?" Actually it wasn't silly at all, but she tried to make light of the fact that she nearly hurdled the tool into a loose cannon, ready to explode on the nearest person (which was Leila in this case). "Sorry about that! Sometimes I get a bit...carried away." |

She’d have to move closer eventually, so she did it a few steps at a time, tentatively, afraid of being grabbed at any moment—not that Ronni wasn’t certain that she could beat her way out of a situation like that.
It was true: the difference was that instead of taking money she was being handed money willingly. Ronni of course didn’t particularly enjoy getting charity—at least the money in her bag was money she had worked for—kind of. She figured this lady needed money, too. She had worked for that money—she could tell. This lady didn’t look like the kind of lady that just sat around in an office pushing buttons and sliding pencils around a desk.
What had these people done for these quarters? Nothing.
There was a machine taking people’s quarters, all they did was push the button to make sure the car wash was on. Maybe every once in a while they filled the soap suds, but that was it. Sure, all Ronni had done was pry open the catch, but she’s almost pulled a muscle in her shoulder! That was hard work!
But maybe—yes.
An idea.
She lowered her head slightly, shoulders relaxing. Ronni wasn’t stupid—she knew there were nice people in the world. It was just too bad nice people didn’t get anywhere in this world. Slowly, she approached the mechanic, getting just a little closer to her at a time until she was only as far away from her as she was tall. “You’d really do that, just so I don’t take this quarters?” she asked, still feeling a little suspicious. Ronni wasn't really concerned with the wrench anymore. "It's whatever. I've been hit by worse."

Leila, at first, began to doubt herself and her methods. All she wanted was for the girl to set down the quarters and take money from her. It would make her feel tremendously better and Leila would know that nothing was stolen. In fact, now all that was left was to get her thinking and hand her the money so that she could leave. Oh and pat herself on the back. She did like to do that from time to time, but only because she was doing it for the right reason and not for self-gratification (right? she thought so at least). It's not like she went around bragging about it or anything.
She had overlooked something. It only took a moment to hit her, but she felt really dumb for not thinking about it earlier. It was something so very important, too, and Leila mentally kicked herself. I don't even know how much money I have on me in cash... What if it wasn't enough? What if, for some reason, the girl decided to take her money and the bag of change? It wasn't something Leila could do much about considering that she would be the one to get her butt kicked, but it was worth a shot and she had to do the very best that she could.
"Yeah, I would. In fact..." Leila reached into her back pocket where she kept her wallet, just like most men did. Opening it up, she glanced inside and said a silent prayer that she had some money in there.Turns out there was about $40 in a $20 bill and two $10s. Inwardly, she hesitated. It was probably enough to get her by, but would she learn her listen from this? That wasn't Leila's responsibility. It was her responsibility to be compassionate and to show genuine concern for those less fortunate than herself. It was her belief, her faith that gave her this optimistic outlook, and now she had to pass it along. "I've got $40 right here. I know it may not be much, but it'll buy you some food. You can probably do good if you spend it wisely. Is that alright?" |

She probably had about forty dollars of quarters in her backpack, but it was certainly heavier than a couple of sheets of paper. That forty dollars would go a long way, and if she just snatched that girl’s money and ran off with the change, then she’d have around eighty dollars, which could buy even more. But—there was that one thing in the back of her mind. A thing she tried her hardest to ignore so she and her dad could keep going.
A conscience.
It was grinding on her, telling her that she was a terrible person and that she should feel terrible. It was making her fidget, and making her just want to leave.
It wasn’t worth it.
None of it was.
Plus, if she came home with this much change and forty dollars in cash, her dad would guess what had happened and reprimand her. She hated being scolded by her father. He always knew just what to say and how to say it to make her feel like shit. He’d probably take the money anyway, but he’d tell her to stop worrying, that he was the one who should worry about money, not her. He’d say she should be worry about whether or not some boy at school liked her. Whether or not she was getting good grades. Not when her next meal was going to be.
Ronni hated this chick for making her feel bad the way her dad makes her feel bad. She scrunched up her face and unshouldered her heavy backpack. The change made a bunch of ruckus as she moved it, holding it up in two hands. “Just keep your pity money. . . do you have something to put these fucking quarters in? I still need this backpack for school and shit,” she snorted, not looking at the lady.

Leila simply gave up. It probably wasn't the Christian thing to do, but she would definitely keep praying for that girl. She was most definitely a troubled teenager, but she was only doing what she had to do in order to survive. Did she not know how to go and get food from shelters? From soup kitchens? She also might be too prideful to go there considering that she wouldn't even take the mechanic's money. No, it wasn't pity money, but there was no way she would be able to convince her otherwise. It was such a pity that people had to live like this...to steal in order to get by. To walk the streets in search of ways to stay alive.
"No, I don't have anything to help you with. I can't tell you not to do that since you're not my child, but I hope that things get better for you." That was about all the concern that Leila felt she could show right now. She stood and uncrossed her arms, letting go of a heavy sigh and shaking her head. It was a sigh of defeat, of disappointment. There was nothing else here for her to do. Now she would have to go about her merry way and find some food while trying not to think about the teenage girl who stole just so she could eat.
Right. It wouldn't be that easy.
"Look, before I go..." Leila reached into her pocket and pulled out a business card with her contact information. "Here's my card. If you ever need anything, stop by and I'll do what I can to help. Have a good day." She sat the business card down on a cardboard box nearby, nodding at the young girl. Then she turned around and walked out of the alley, not looking to see whether or not she had taken the card.

She had been diffused, but now she was on it again. Was this girl stupid? Did she for some reason not understand what Ronni was trying to do? She wasn’t taking the girl’s money, but why was she walking away without the quarters? Wasn’t that what this whole thing was about? And now she was just going to walk away?
“Hey, hey bi—lady,” she shouted, managing to correct herself at the last second so she didn’t wind up chasing her away. She jogged a short ways to make sure she stayed in eye sight, shouting after her the whole time. “I was going to give you these quarters! Don’t you fucking want them anymore? What the fuck?”
God dammit.
She might pick up the card on the way back: lord knew that the van always needed some sort of maintenance and maybe this lady could help out with that, but first—these fucking quarters! Ronni had worked up the fucking courage and conscience to give the quarters back and now the lady was acting like she’d gone and murdered someone just because she wouldn’t take the lady’s charity.
What the fuck kind of messed up logic was that? Did she really take it that fucking personally?
“I just need my backpack! I just wanted to fucking know if you had like a fucking bag to put the quarters in! God dammit why are you just fucking walking away like that?” she demanded, stopping her forward momentum to hold her backpack full of quarters up. She was aware that she was yelling a little too loudly and might just make someone wise to what was going on, but she didn’t care—she was worked up now and wanted answers.
