Living Situation He comes from a comfortable middle class existence with family that consists of an older brother in San Diego where his brother teaches mathematics in his high school. The two of them are not wealthy, not by a long stretch, but they are wealthy in affection. Currently, he’s crashing at his best friend’s place for the next couple of weeks before college dorms open. Student at California Institute of Technology: He is in transition, waiting out the summer to finally start something that promised challenge. Babysitter: With his two best friends best described as “a cheeky monkey dragging along a lost puppy on a mission to make his life difficult”, Leon has had his hands full as damage control and clean up crew for Gabi and Hayden. But if he really had a problem with this job, he would have just quit a long time ago. 02. Appearance He has been called classically handsome before, standing at 6’ 2” with cool blond hair, sharp features and ice blue eyes framed by a simple pair of glasses. Perhaps they were right and he could make something out of his appearance but it’s just a postscript for him. It’s not something that poses any significance to him, because it just doesn’t affect the way he goes about his life. He is one who takes pride in hygiene and neatness but never indulges in vanity. There is a coldness, a harshness even, to his appearance that matches with certain aspects of his personality. Perhaps his winter birth was a stroke of foreshadowing. High cheekbones and straight nose have been thought intimidating, as a cool assessing gaze will always accompany them. Leon might come across as aloof and most of the time, you will be right. His tall physique is conditioned by years of swimming, a sport made important in his school, and his love for a round or two of basketball. Broad shoulders and strong lines are the results of training but are kept hidden by button-up shirts and jeans. There’s an understated edge of athletic efficiency to his movement, rarely over the top and always measured and calculated. He dresses simply; his wardrobe consisting mostly of button-up shirts, t-shirts, slacks, jeans, and a rule of thumb would be no more than two colours at the same time. There’s a reputation to protect and a good encompassing word would be minimalistic. But then he finally relented and approached his brother for help in attracting a certain female's attention. So Luther brought him around for a make over and a fashion upgrade. His wardrobe now has variety. 03. Personality Meticulous » Being untidy would have been a reason for his uncle to punish him. Leon learned that he had to keep things neat and organized in order to make his life at his aunt's easier. This was reinforced when he moved back in with his older brother, whose teaching was much better than his housekeeping. Rational » To him, it’s the safest way to go about anything, be it simple directions on a map or a quantum physics question set, there are rules for everything and following a sensible trajectory that will give him a predictable outcome. It’s secure, dependable and reassuring. Subscribing to logic has never failed him thus far and he does not expect it to anytime soon. Protective » There aren’t many people he could call friends but for those he acknowledges as such, they will find a formidable ally in Leon. There isn’t much he would not do for those he holds close to his heart. To an extent, he might even admit that he is a sentimental person for the lengths he would go to protect someone he cherishes. Loyal » Due to his lack of friends and trustworthy family (by that, he means his aunt, uncle and cousins whom he shared a roof for four years), he is extremely loyal to those who have proven themselves (Luther, Gabi and Hayden). Blunt » Besides the politeness society requires for him to slip under the radar, Leon does not believe in mollycoddling and dislikes frivolous social frou-frou. If there’s something he wishes to say, he will say it simply, even if he knows that he will construed as being too candid, too straightforward, and uncaring of the other parties’ feelings. You’re right, he doesn’t. Cold » Given his disposition, Leon is not going to be anyone’s first choice for a hug or comforting words because he will suggest actionable solutions to the problem present. His words are unembellished, to the point, his tone calm and his stance unwavering. Comparing him to a glacier wouldn’t be the worst idea to have. The matter-of-fact baritone will dispel any notion of sympathy if you go crying to him about your problems. In fact, unless you’re one of the two named Gabrielle Alberts and Hayden Green, you’re shit out of luck. You will have better results talking to a wall; a wall would not look at you with icy boredom in sharp blues. Aloof » Leon enjoys a position of objectiveness when it comes to the majority of people and issues. If you think him detached, you will not be far from the truth. This is due to the numerous disappointments. What doesn't mean much cannot hurt you. Unless he has a vested interest in keeping your company, it would be unwise to think that he’ll give you the attention you think you deserve from you. There’s a reason for closing himself off because for every person he trusts and opens up to, the chances of getting hurt increases exponentially. He dislikes the notion of more people having such control over his emotional state. The young man looks unfriendly and he’d like to keep it that way. Please don’t take it as a challenge. Tricks don’t work on him twice, someone already succeeded, you can move on. Unsociable » Look at point above. Harsh » To him, it’s a truthful synonym for honesty. Most people just take the truth and thus accuse of those who dared to speak but it’s a flaw, because he is the harshest to himself. For years, he thought that there was something wrong with him because his surrounding family couldn't even love him until he realised that it wasn't true. Essentially, Leon is his greatest foe, despite how put together he might seem. He could do well easing up but that requires change and that’s something that does not sit well with him. Possessive » It's a result of his childhood because he wasn't given much, given that his formative years at his aunt's. He cherished what little he had. He sometimes hates it but Leon doesn't share, ever. Right now, there hasn't been a problem but one thing is he not looking forward to about college is the sheer amount of people who are going to want to be friends with Hayden and Gabrielle. He understands that it's in their nature but that doesn't stop that iron fist curling around his heart once in a while, when he thinks about being potentially replaced. Leon does keep that side to him under wraps and hides it behind a veil of coolness. But this trait does reveal that the young man does have feelings and intense ones at that. Pessimistic » When life has dealt you so many bad cards, one can't help but to expect the worst and not hope for the best, but to actively seek survival. Leon is aware of how dangerous hope is, especially when you are disappointed in the end. All in all, he's not the nicest person on the block. That accolade goes to a certain Hayden John Green. 04. History He actually had a pretty normal childhood with a housewife for a mother, a military man for a father and really cool older brother in Ohio. Then when he was 8 years old, everything changed when a drunk driver rammed a truck into the side of their parents' car. It had been a date for the couple and they had been returning from the restaurant when the accident happen. Leon remembers every single detail from that moment on, how his babysitter was in shock and his brother had pulled him close for a bone-crushing hug with tears dripping down his face. The funeral had been three days later and he was forced into a tiny black suit to attend the close casket ceremony. They had been too mangled to have the coffins open. But at least they were buried together. And for the next few days, he kept waking up thinking that it had been all a dream and his mother would have had his breakfast ready for him. Orange juice and pancakes on the table while he got ready for school. Only when did he came downstairs, when he realised that it was his brother. A substitution. A week later, he was uprooted to Seattle where he was to stay with his mother's younger sister and her family. Her husband was an alcoholic and his cousins were jealous brats who found entertainment tormenting him. Luther, his brother, was off studying in UCSD in California for his mathematic degree. In the beginning, his brother called in to check on him but as the months dragged on, the phone calls weren't as frequent. His aunt said nothing, hoping to keep the fragile peace in the household. He kept his room neat and tidy enough so that no one could find fault with him, he didn't want the attention and his meticulousness was developed as such. He learned how to read body language to gauge the moods of the people around him so that he knew when to flee the scene and avoid trouble. His penchant for cool observation was a survival skill he picked up while living with his relatives. Leon excelled in school, as a result from his intensive reading but instead of congratulations, he merely got flack for performing better than his cousins. But the boy was stubborn and stuck to his guns because it was the only thing he could control and he enjoyed academics. No one was going to take that away from him and he knew, from a young age, that education was going to be his way out of this situation. While he was never starved, Leon was never quite full either, choosing to take a few mouthfuls before slinking back into the comfort of his room where he indulged in his books. Books were safe, they never betray you or break promises. He kept to himself in school, preferring the library than the cafeteria during break times. There were bullies, of course. His cousins never quite left him alone in school either. He was an easy target, without family and an adult to run to. With that, Leon steeled himself and developed a mistrust towards most people. If the people who were blood treated you like scum, what was stopping others to do the same? He didn't quite blame Luther once he was old enough to realise that it was a good thing that his older brother continued his education so that he could do something later on that involved whisking him away from their relatives. Luther promised Leon that he would bring Leon to California once he finished his teacher's qualification and true enough, that happened when Leon turned fourteen. It took him a while to warm up to his big brother again but it didn't take long when Luther tried his very best to engage the younger Everett. Luther had gotten a job at Westside, a well-known public school, and had his brother take the admission test which Leon passed with flying colours. Leon was excited but kept that to himself because it was a habit as expressions of joy usually got him in hot water in the previous household. He would never be an expressive person and Luther would curse his aunt and uncle for the rest of his life. The prospect of going to a good school had been a step towards his rehabilitation. Then he found out that his brother was a frat boy through and through with the way he kept his house messy and all the hot pockets in the freezer. While Leon wasn't one with experience in the kitchen, he quickly realised that his brother simply didn't quite have the time and he resolved to step up and contribute to this reunited household. So he began learning through books and the internet, while keeping the house in tiptop shape after school. It was his way of thanking his brother for getting him out of that house. In terms of his high school experience, Leon had been prepared to just breeze through the four years without nuisance while keeping to himself but there were two obstacles who presented themselves on the very first day of freshman year. These two entities went by the name of Gabrielle Alberts and Hayden John Green. By the end of that fateful day, he had an extra monkey and a puppy who were adamant about staying put. The trio became an inseparable unit and Leon, for the first time in his life, began to open up. His circle now had three people; a mean feat for a boy like him. Hayden, Gabrielle (he refused to call her anything else up till this day – he liked the way she frowns when he does it) pretty much bodily dragged him around for a holistic high school experience. While he’ll never admit it, Leon was thankful for the terrible twosome. So as it turned out, all three of them were hitting CalTech for their undergrad and he was actually relieved that they were going together. So right now, he’s making his way just two hours away from his home (Luther made a dramatic hoo-ha, declaring that the place will crumble without his expert housekeeping) and starting a new phase of his life. 05.
