She had been on her way home when she heard the cries.
They had been soft and barely there, but the street had been quiet and there was a lull in the background noise when she first heard the faint yelps. The fact that they sounded suspiciously like the cries of an animal didn't sit well with the girl at all, and she immediately abandoned the sidewalk in favor of following the whimpers. They led her to a small puppy, tan save for the black fur around it's muzzle, wedged between a wall and a pile of boxes. It was thin and dirty, and had the biggest brown eyes Kris had ever seen. Her heart just about broke in two at the sight of it, and without thinking she immediately began cooing to the poor baby, "It's okay, don't worry, I'll get you out-"
After carefully moving and shoving the boxes aside, Kris finally managed to get close enough to the tiny thing to let it sniff her fingers. "Hi there," she mumbled, and when she got a tail wag in return, that was it. She was sold. She didn't care about the no pets rule in her apartment, she was bringing this dog home if it was the last thing she did.
All things considered, this was hardly the first time she had brought an animal home with her. As a kid, it was something of a bad habit where she brought anything with four legs back to the house with her, much to her parents' exasperation. And then there had been the stolen cat incident... yeah, Kris had something of a bleeding heart. But she was an adult now, and things were a bit different from when she was growing up in Florida. For one thing, she had a landlord who would probably kill her if he found out about this. For another...
She and her roommates weren't... exactly close. She had met them, sure, but for the most part Kris just tried to stay out of their way. This had led up to weeks of quick greetings and hurried words, that mostly accumulated with her shutting herself in her room whenever she was home. Since she barely knew the other two girls, she wasn't entirely sure how up to 'breaking the rules of the building and potentially getting kicked out' they would be. They were perfectly nice girls, don't get her wrong! But this was probably breaking some kind of unspoken roommate agreement that none of them do anything to fuck up their living arrangements. Actually, no, scratch 'probably-' this was definitely breaking an unspoken rule.
Kris had a kind of haphazard plan worked out in her mind though; she'd sneak the puppy into the apartment, hide it away in her room, then wait until her roomies were asleep before she took care of her new charge. She'd explain everything to Elia and Ani tomorrow, but she didn't even know if they were allergic or afraid of dogs or not- if she couldn't convince them to let her keep the puppy, she'd have to drop it off at the shelter where she worked. That thought alone was enough to make her heart break all over again.
But first things first: step one of her plan. Sneaking the dog into the apartment. It wasn't that hard avoiding the building's tenants on her way up to her floor; she used her bag as a kind of shield to hide the small thing from view. No, the hard part was going to be getting from the front door to her room, and crossing her fingers that maybe, just maybe, neither of her roommates would be home yet and she'd be totally in the clear and this wouldn't be a big deal at all- haha yeah right she didn't have that kind of luck. Before opening the door, Kris stuck the squirming puppy under her shirt, doubled over, and hobbled into the flat like she had the worst stomach cramps in the history of the world.
This was the Greatest Plan Of All Time.

Being a member of the Impedio Society was definitely a full-time job. And by full-time, she meant that it consumed every minute, every second of your being. You couldn't take action without having to think of the consequences: it was why she couldn't help but laugh when people treated her like a silly girl or an airhead. She dealt with secrets, goals, ideals that others couldn't even imagine existed in the real world, and she didn't need their reassurance to know that she was doing something pretty amazing. That quiet sense of satisfaction was what she lived for.
The hours were ridiculous, though. Take that day for example. Ani was sitting on the couch in her living room, pretending to look up articles for a news story. However, in an incognito window, she was reading up on supernatural happenings around the area: there had been a crazy number of them over the past three months, and she knew that it would only be a matter of time before she had to make something else up. It was probably immoral, but when there were larger things at stake than morals, you had to occasionally bend the rules. So she was sitting on her couch, typing furiously away, when she saw one of her roommates hobble in.
"Hey Kris!" Ani exclaimed, waving her hand. The other girl was nice-- quiet, but nice. They hadn't managed to have the chance to have a real conversation just yet, but she'd been busy and Kris had been busy. It was only natural. But it looked like she was bowled over, clutching her stomach with pain and agony. Brown eyes widened with concern as she jumped off her seat, rushing up towards the other girl. Not before X-ing out her incognito window, though. You had to be careful.
"Are you okay? Do you want to sit down? Let me get you some tea. What's wrong, girl?"

Eilia wasn't quite sure what she'd been expecting. She'd had roommates before. Hell, she'd had plenty of roommates. Some of them had been good, some not so good, and while she'd mostly gotten along with them all, she'd never ended up close with any of them. None of them could be called friends, and she hadn't so much as spoken to any of them since she'd gotten out.
For some reason, she'd thought that would change when she got out into the real world. She'd thought that the people she ended up sharing a home with would end up friends with her. She'd thought they'd be the best of friends at the drop of a hat, and now she was kicking herself for it. No. It wasn't ever going to be some super instant friendship. Friendships took work, and she was largely unaware of how to go about becoming friends with someone. Mostly she'd stayed in her room, browsing the internet (unfiltered for the first time), and spent the rest of her time at work. Work was taking up more of her time then she'd thought, but it felt good to be at least somewhat self sufficient.
In fact, Eilia was in her room when Kristen returned, and she likely would have stayed there if she hadn't heard Anabel's voice rise. It wasn't as if the walls were terribly thick--if anyone raised their voice, the others would quickly hear. She pushed her chair back from the desk, heading over to her door and pulling it open, peeking halfway out.
"Is someone hurt?" Most people probably would have said something else, but Eilia had spent lots of time in wards, where injuries were particualrly common, whether self inflicted or not. |

And just like the prophecies foretold, Kris's luck was absolute shit. Of course Ani would be on the couch when she came home. Of course! At least Kris had predicted this might happen and had the dog hidden out of sight- she seriously doubted it was enjoying these travel arrangements too much, but if things went according to plan they'd be safe in her room soon. They just had to make it across the living room, and then they'd be in the clear. So in the meantime, the puppy was just going to have to deal with it.
Like how Kris was going to have to deal with her roommate. She felt really bad about making her worry when she wasn't in any pain, but some things just had to be done. "Hi, Ani." She replied, hoping she had a pained expression on her face. It probably wasn't too far off the mark, in all honesty; she had to look pretty fucking stupid at the moment, and even if she didn't she felt pretty fucking stupid. She winced at the concern in Ani's voice, and winced even more at the offer of tea. "Ah, no I'm-" And then Elia stuck her head out of her room, and Kris wanted to knock her head against the wall. Could everyone please ignore her, that would actually be super swell and helpful right about now.
Instead, the brunette began awkwardly, slowly shuffling her way across the room. Keeping the puppy hidden under her shirt while doubled over was actually proving to be a bit of a challenge. In an attempt to offer some kind of distraction, Kris began to quickly explain, "I'm totally fine, just, uh, period cramps, I just need to lie down for a bit and I'll be-"
And that's when the puppy started whining.
Kris froze, quietly pleading with it to shut the frick up before their cover was blown. And of course, it being the little piece of shit that it was, didn't care about any of that, and instead began barking. From under her shirt. While she was doubled over with both her roommates staring at her. Ahaha oh god she was so screwed, goodbye friends she was gone. Thinking quickly, Kris grabbed onto the only remotely plausible thing she could think of and said, face red in embarrassment, "Uh, that's my ringtone." Kristen Mayor: Master Liar.
Can you at least give the girl a you tried star for effort?

She hadn't seen that much of either Kris since they'd started living together, but one thing was for sure: if she hadn't been so busy over the past while, she would have really, really wanted to get to know the girl. She seemed like such a fun person beneath the shyness, if her occasional quirks and strange habits were any indication of that. Kris seemed like such a sweetheart, even if she was definitely a little odd. Then again, who was Ani to judge what was odd and what was not? She was the one working for the super secret society.
With that, Ani watched the girl slowly shuffle into her room, clutching her stomach. Was it just her, or was there a bump in her stomach where there hadn't been one before-- then again, she hadn't seen Kris in a while-- and she was supposed to have been meeting a guy a while ago. Her other roommate, Eilia, popped her head out from her door, and Ani's eyes met hers. In what she hoped was a low voice, she mouthed the words:
"Ellie, do you think she's pregnant?"
Okay, no. That was probably impossible. Ani couldn't remember just when Kris had met that boy, but she knew that it wasn't that long ago. You didn't start showing signs of pregnancy that soon. She'd been in college for long enough to know at least that. So she got up from where she was sitting, frowning as she walked up to Kris.
Woof! Woof!
Yeah, no. That definitely was not a baby.
"Kris, I don't know about you but... The sound of a dog barking is nothing as silly as your previous ringtones." Ani had no idea how much Kidz Bop the girl had used as her ringtone since they'd started living together, but she knew it was enough to drive her crazy. She grinned.
"Joke's over. What is it?"

Eilia was a bit confused by the whole situation. Kristen was acting like she was hurt, but she was talking just fine (if sounding somewhat pained), and Eilia couldn't guess what was going on. Her first thought was actually that she was trying to smuggle something in, but she quickly pushed it away. People tried to smuggle things in all the time, and it wouldn't be the first time Eilia had seen someone pulled the 'hiding something under my shirt while trying to hide it' trick.
Eilia pushed the thought away though. Why would Kristen need to hide anything? It was her apartment as much as anyone elses. If she wanted to bring alcohol in, she could absolutely do so. Drugs were a bit more iffy, although there were a lot easier ways to bring it in, and Eilia quickly decided that it couldn't be that. After all, why would she try and smuggle anything in?
She caught enough of what Anabel had mouthed to understand, lips pressing into a thin line. Maybe. It was possible. Only it seemed too sudden, that all of a sudden she was having to hide her stomach. Wouldn't they have seen it before? Wouldn't there have been some kind of warning sign?
Of course, all speculation went flying out the window when Kristen's stomach whined. Eilia stared in confusion, trying to process what she'd just heard. Was she hallucinating? Was she finally having an audio-only hallucination? Anabel speaking up calmed her a bit, and Eilia let out a little sigh.
"Are you bringing a pet in?" To an apartment with absolutely no dogs allowed, even worse.

Crap, the jig was up.
She was seriously regretting not putting her phone on vibrate right about now. Who would have thought that would be what gave her away, though? And then Elia had to ask The Question, and it all went downhill from there. There was no point in trying to hide it anymore- she had been caught in the act, it was time to come clean. Kris stood up straight and took the puppy out from under her shirt, holding it gently in her hands as it wagged it's tail at it's audience, obviously pretty pleased with itself for giving them away. What a piece of shit. She grimaced at the small animal, before looking up and glancing between her two roommates. A small sigh escaped her lips; she had to offer some kind of explanation.
"I-I know it's against the rules, but I couldn't just leave it." She started miserably, as the puppy starting squirming in her hands. If they got caught with a dog in their apartment, they were royally screwed, but she was really hoping they'd understand. She readjusted her hold on it, before continuing to say, talking a little too quickly, "I'm going to try and see if there's an owner, but if there isn't I-I was kind of hopingwecouldmaybekeepit?" Please please please let them say yes and they'd be totally cool with it, please. Realizing what she might have been implying in her question, she hurriedly added, "I'll totally pay for everything and house train it and all that, you don't have to worry about that, s-so-"
Fingers crossed neither of them were allergic to animals or had a phobia of dogs or anything. Though looking at the puppy, it was kind of hard to believe anyone being afraid of it. It looked a little underfed and had a dirty coat, but otherwise it seemed perfectly happy and healthy. She'd probably still have to take it to a vet though, just in case it had worms, and it probably didn't have it's shots- that was even if they were keeping it, though. It could very well be that she was going to have to drop it off at the shelter and say her good bye's.

Pregnancy sounded like a far-fetched conclusion, but it wasn't impossible. She'd worked in the media for a few months only, but it was long enough for her to know that there were people who could give birth without showing any warning signs. However, she was aware that the media chose stories to sell, and that it wasn't normal. Eilia's conclusion that Kris had brought a dog into the house sounded far more likely.
"Oh my god he's adorable."
Ani let out a little squeal as Kristen lifted her shirt, revealing a tiny puppy who was wagging its tail. Small. So small. So fluffy. So cute. Slamming her laptop shut, she pounced from where she was sitting, darting over towards the dog. "Can I pet it?" she asked, eyes wide with amazement and wonder. It was a dog. A puppy. A dog! She'd always wanted one, but she'd felt like she wouldn't be able to afford the upkeep as a student. Her parents had been the owners of cats, too, so they'd ruled that owning a dog wasn't a good idea too. She thought it was silly, but they made the rules. Upon Kris' declaration that she would train it and pay, Ani found herself nodding up and down.
"Yes. Do it. In fact, can we not bother trying to find an owner?" Was there a collar on the dog? She sincerely hoped not. "I'm pretty sure that if none of us snitch, we'll all be able to keep a single tiny baby hidden. He's adorable oh my god." She shot Eilia a sideways look. The girl had better not try to protest or anything, or Ani would be pretty annoyed. Jokes aside, she knew that people did have issues with animals. It was very possible that Eilia might not have been down with that, but if it was going to just be a "I hate dogs" Ani would start questioning whether the girl was actually human.

Not just a pet, but a dog. Dogs were pretty much the top of the 'no pets' list. Even if a place said no pets, they'd still let you bring in small animals supposedly, but dogs were something else entirely. Dogs were a bit fat no when it came to finding apartments, and Eilia had never thought she'd have to worry about one.
Only now she did. It was a cute dog, that was for sure, but there was an abrupt queasiness in her stomach. What if they were found out? Would they be kicked out? Get in trouble? Eilia had spent the last few years on the utter straight and narrow, and no matter how cute the dog was, she was nervous about the idea.
Anabel obviously wasn't, and she practically flew towards the dog to give it attention, even while Eilia hung back, the concern written on her face.
"You should - you should try and find the owner first." Although she was fairly sure Anabel was kidding otherwise. "How are you going to hide it? They'll see it going in and out. You'll have to walk it and feed it and what if it barks?" Really, anyone who was even vaguely aware of Eilia would be able to tell that she was nervous at the idea, even if she hadn't outright said no. |

Well Ani's enthusiasm was a good sign, so that was something. Kris couldn't help but smile as the other girl bolted across the room to greet the puppy, her eyes wide as she stared at the dog. "Yeah of course." She replied, as the puppy began wagging it's tail harder and whining in the back of it's throat. Good sign number two, it liked Ani. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all? At least no one was outright saying no yet, though Kris could tell from just looking at Elia that she wasn't 100% down with this. The expression on her face said it all.
Kris shook her head at Ani's comment about not looking for an owner, though truth be told she secretly agreed. "We should at least try, though I really doubt anyone's going to turn up." She said, biting the inside of her cheek at the thought. Sad as it was to say, the poor baby had probably been abandoned. It happened all the time, she was well aware of that, but it still wasn't fair; abandoning a helpless animal was the lowest of the low. There were plenty of local shelters that could have taken the puppy, but to just leave it out on the street where it could have been run over or, or- Actually, she hadn't thought to check for a sex. Woops. Lifting the puppy up, she quickly checked between it's legs. Boy, definitely a boy. Certainly explained why he was such a little shit at such a young age.
"He's not going to be a tiny baby forever though, look at his paws." He was a tiny thing now, true, but his paws told a very different story. With proper love and care, he was probably going to grow up to be huge. A literal giant. They were going to be able to saddle him up and ride him into battle. Just thinking about how much it was going to cost to feed him made her wince. "It shouldn't be a problem while he's still little, but Ellie's right, sneaking him out is going to be a problem when he gets bigger." She sighed, giving the small dog a look.
It's like they said though, where there's a will there's a way. She could possibly talk their neighbors into looking the other way, and sneak him down the stairs? For now, hiding him behind her bag when she took him out would have to suffice. "We'll figure something out." She decided with a shrug; that was a bridge they'd worry about crossing when they got to it. Right now, they had a dirty mongrel to fawn over. "Do you want to hold him?" She asked Elia cheerfully, brown eyes warm as she glanced up at the other girl. She was nervous, that much was obvious, so maybe introducing her to the puppy would help ease her mind? Kris certainly hoped so- it was Ellie's home too, after all, and if she wasn't comfortable with the puppy being around then they couldn't keep it.

If Ani had been any more insensitive, she might have called Eilia a party pooper. "It's just a wee thing, though." To some extent, she could understand the girl's nervousness, but then again, hiding things had never really been a problem for Ani. She really didn't want to advertise that she was good at sneaking about and keeping secrets, but if she was going to have to to keep the dog around, she would. Kris did have a point about the fact that the dog would grow, but Ani shook her head.
"We should be able to figure something out." Maybe there was some sort of spell or charm that she could grab from the IS to make the dog inconspicuous when it grew? It would be fair if Ellie didn't like dogs, or had a phobia of them. That Ani would be able to accept. However, fear of being caught sneaking about was something that she carried with her throughout her career, and she would drag that into her personal life for the sake of this precious baby. "Unless you don't like dogs, or you're scared of them? she asked, eyes meeting the bespectacled girl's, practically pleading with her to relent. It was then when Kris held the dog to Eilia, and Ani let out a gleeful little gasp.
"Hold on," she cooed. "Wait a second!" She pulled her phone out, opening the Instagram application so she could snap a quick picture. "Look, he's so ready to be the star," Ani giggled as the dog's eyes met the camera's. "Say cheese!"
The sound of a mock shutter rang through the house, and there, she had her picture.
"Which filter should I go for this time..." Ani started muttering to herself. "Come here," she said, gesturing towards both of the girls, beckoning for them to look at her iPhone screen. "Rise, or Amaro? Any ideas for cute hashtags?"

Eilia felt like captain buzzkill. It wasn't that she was trying to ruin everything--it just seemed to be coming to her naturally. She didn't have a problem with dogs--she'd been around them before, even if she'd never have pets--but she was still nervous about the idea of sneaking.
"No, I'm not afraid." She paused, taking a careful step forward towards the dog before pausing when Anabel told them to stop. She did, even if she didn't know why, unsure if she'd done something wrong. Instead, she watched as Anabel took the dog's picture, and Eilia frowned even more. "Wouldn't having pictures of it make it more obvious we have a dog?" She asked, not entirely clear on the concept of social networking security. At times, Eilia felt like the only person under forty without their own facebook account. She really didn't want one either--it would just make it more obvious that her family was completely out of her life, one way or another.
"And... I don't know." She paused, squinting at the two before inching back to the puppy, reaching out hesitantly to scratch it between the ears, letting herself gently pet the dog. "Rise I guess." It didn't matter to her though, and she was letting herself focus on the dog. It was awfully cute, and it would still be Kristen's dog first and foremost. Maybe things would be okay. She paused, swallowing hard before giving a little nod. "I mean - as long as we keep an eye out for it's owner, it shouldn't be too bad, right?"
She was the biggest pushover ever.

It took Kris a second to figure out what Ani was doing, and when she did she nearly let out a snort of laughter as the other girl took a picture of the dog. Puppy selfies, amazing. He actually was staring right at the camera though... although that could just be because he was watching Ani. Who knows, it was a mystery. "Nah, it's okay, we'll need a picture for posters anyway." Kris answered Ellie's question with a shrug; besides, it wouldn't really be a problem, unless the landlord was following Ani on Instagram. Now that would be really, really awkward. And she wasn't familiar with filters at all, so she followed Elia's lead and replied, "Rise, and how about hashtag needs a bath?" She hadn't noticed before, but he was actually pretty smelly. They were going to have to do something about that before he stank up the place. How such a tiny animal could smell so much, she'd never know-
Without realizing it, she held her breath as Ellie reached out to scratch the puppy. It was almost as if he understood what was going on, because he immediately began wagging his tail at the other girl. What a charmer. But then Elia nodded, and- was that a yes?! "Yeah, of course!" Kris quickly agreed, trying not to believe this was happening- that they were going to have a puppy! To say she was over the moon would be an understatement- of course, this all depended on whether the puppy even had an owner, but she highly doubted that, so it was safe to say he was almost as good as her's-- "So it's official, right? If I can't find an owner we can keep him?" She asked, biting her lip to stop herself from smiling. This was pretty much the best thing ever; she was so obviously excited, it was kind of funny to watch her try to contain herself. But they were getting a puppy, how could she not be excited?!

Ani took a deep breath, squeezing her eyes shut as she clicked on 'Rise'. Okay, yeah, she could see why Ellie was concerned. It wasn't hard to see that the other girl was fearful and distrusting, and afraid of potential consequences if they got in trouble. Everyone had different boundaries and she got it, she understood it, but hell if it wasn't sometimes hard to accept it. "Nobody's going to tell on us, Ellie, don't be silly," she said, trying to come across as dismissive and casually as she could.
It wasn't Ellie's fault that she was having doubts, but the immature part of her couldn't help but feel a burning feeling of annoyance in her gut. There had to be a way to put up some sort of ward, and she knew it. Maybe if she told Naos he'd help her sneak around, or at least help her with research. Put together they were quite the pair of sneaky buggers, she could tell you that. Though she couldn't exactly go around telling her roommates about the IS, could she? She was about to part her lips to say something else, but when she opened her eyes Eilia was actually nodding. Yes, nodding.
"Well that was a sudden change of heart!"
Her entire face lit up as Eilia continued, stating that it wouldn't be too bad if they continued looking for an owner. Not like Ani was going to try very hard, but still. "Oh my god thank you so much," she said, still clenching her phone in one hand. "Trust me, he's going to grow up to be a good guy. You aren't going to regret this." Even though the dog belonged to Kris, Ani did feel some sort of connection with the cutie pie, and the urge to prove to Eilia that this was a fantastic idea. "Hold on, just-- let me upload this then! With hashtags!"
#dog #cute #puppy #feelingalittleruff
With that, she pressed the 'Okay' button, and slid her phone back into her pocket. Oh boy, she could feel the 'Likes' rolling in as they stood here. Nobody was going to be able to resist that face. "I vote Kris gets to keep him," Ani said. It was probably for the best. With her IS duties, she really didn't have time to take care of a dog. "But I'll chip in a little here and there. Sound good?"

Eilia felt a bit like she was the only one in the apartment who wasn't completely head over heels. There was still a certain amount of apprehension, and while she was trying to be less of a party pooper, it was still a bit nerve wracking.
"We should... should pick a time. Like, the owner has two weeks to show up and then it's to keep. So that we know." And so that no one got their hopes up, only to have the owner show up. Eilia wasn't quite as certain it had been abandoned as everyone else seemed to be, but then she hadn't seen the poor dog abandoned on the street either.
She paused, glancing at Kristen and giving a little nod. "He probably does need a bath. I mean... aren't.. I don't know, shouldn't we worry about fleas or something?" It was rapidly becoming painfully obvious that while she was familiar with dogs, she'd definitely never owned one. She knew that fleas were a thing which she should be concerned about, but exactly what needed to be done in order to avoid them was a step beyond her limited knowledge.
"I could walk him I think. Maybe. I mean it seems pretty simple, and I have time when I'm not at work."

Ani's assurance that the puppy was going to grow up to be an upstanding young gentleman was enough to make Kris giggle; sure, he might turn out to be a gentleman, but odds were between now and then, he was going to be a tiny terror on four stumpy legs. It went without saying that even though she didn't know the exact age of the dog, he was probably going to start teething soon- which meant Ani might just be eating her words. And that wasn't even mentioning the house training... yeah, this was going to take some work.
But, first things first: Elia brought up a good point, one that Kris could definitely agree to. They couldn't try looking for an owner for a couple of days and then just call it quits; it was best to give themselves a deadline. (And the owner, too; could you imagine having somebody turn up months later asking for their dog, after you had been taking care of it all that time?) "Okay, two weeks it is. If no one comes for him by then, then we keep him." Fingers crossed that he hadn't wandered away from home and he didn't have a family frantically turning the state upside down trying to find him. She knew if she was in that position, that was certainly what she'd do. Just look at this adorable, precious little baby face!
"And yeah, he probably does have fleas... you're fine though, they prefer animal blood." She added quickly, not wanting the wary agreement they had just established to immediately crumble to pieces. Wouldn't that just be super? 'Hey congrats, the illegal puppy you just agreed to let into your home just gave you fleas, hurray!' Yeah no. Kris bit her lip, before saying, "Dish wash soap will work just fine to get them off." The stuff actually worked miracles on flea-infested animals, don't let her tell you about it. She could go on forever.
At both girls' offers to help out, Kris couldn't possibly hide the grin that lit up her face. She had been less than a stellar roommate since moving in, and yet Ellie and Ani were both willing to let her keep the puppy and even help out... they were both really, really nice. It was enough to make her want to cry. "That'd be great- thank you both so much." Kris didn't even know where to begin to express her gratitude- maybe giving the puppy a bath before he filled the apartment with fleas and eau de homelessness would be a good place to start, though.

Two weeks. Ani nodded at Eilia's statement, allowing her words to sink in. "Okay. I guess. Though I really hope he doesn't show up, if you wouldn't mind me being frank." Well, tact had never been her strong suit, and if Ellie was going to keep living with her it was high time she started to get used to her honest opinions. Ani was a blunt person who said what was on her mind-- it was the least most people deserved, to know at least one person who wouldn't lie to them. And even if Ani had spun a regular web of lies, it was for the others' protection.
"I suppose you're right, though. We really should give his owner two weeks to show up. Does that mean we have to wait until then to give him a name, though?" She leaned over, petting the puppy on the head once more, smiling as he let out another yelp. Okay, so maybe he could have fleas; Ellie was right once again. At least one of them in this household was thinking rationally. Much as she didn't want to admit it, it was probably a good thing. With that, Ani pulled her hand away, nodding once more.
"Well, at least we have a Disney Princess in the house to take care of all the baby animals. The Dog Whisperer seems to have this down pat." Kris worked at a pet store, so it made sense that she would have an idea of what to do. "As for walks, I volunteer as well! In fact," she said, grinning at both girls, "We could all go walk him together. Right?" She'd been meaning to bond with both her roommates for a while, but she'd been so busy that it had been difficult. Having the shared responsibility of walking a dog would mean that they would get to spend more time with each other-- not that she was very good with responsibility outside of work, but she would deal. "Whenever we're all free that is. If not, we can take turns."

Two weeks seemed to be acceptable to all three of them, so Eilia gave a little nod. Three weeks was pushing it, but two weeks? If the owner hadn't made themselves known by then, they probably didn't exist. She'd have to keep an eye out for any posters, because while the other girls seemed fairly intent on keeping the dog, Eilia was going to make absolutely sure they hadn't just stolen some kids puppy. She had morals, dangit.
Plus the fleas. She was totally not cool with fleas, 'animal blood preferred' or not. The moment Kristen admitted the dog probably had fleas, Eilia quickly backed up, giving the dog plenty of room. She was tempted to bolt to the bathroom and wash her hand until she was feeling alright, but she mentally told herself it would be fine... even if she wasn't entirely sure that it would be.
She was vaguely surprised to hear Anabel admit that she didn't want an owner to come forward. Of course she'd assumed that both were thinking it, but she hadn't thought anyone would say it. You just didn't say such things out loud generally. You were supposed to be polite, to say what people expected of you. She could really only imagine being so blunt as Anabel was, to simply say what was on your mind, rather then... well, anything. She was used to being extremely polite, after all.
Eilia gave a little nod to that as well. "I could... ah, put up my work schedule when I get it? And then if everyone puts their work schedules up, we could work out when we could all take him for a walk." KRISTEN MAYOR | MAY 20TH, 6PM |

If Ani was going to admit to not wanting an owner to show up, then Kris figured she might as well agree with her. "Same." She shrugged, hugging the puppy closer to her. Could you really blame her for wanting a pet of her own? Not to mention the poor thing might need a home- it was a win-win for everyone! (Except Elia. Sorry, Elia, you lost this one.)
If they were going to wait for an owner though, naming the puppy wouldn't be the best of ideas. Naming him would mean getting attached, and then what would happen if an owner really did show up? But at the same time... "Well, we can't just keep calling him the puppy for the next two weeks. I vote we name him." Nothing really came to mind for her though; maybe one of the others would come up with something? Or maybe they should give it a day to get to know him, then come up with something together? Shit, naming was hard. Why couldn't this be like Pokemon, where she could name everything Farticus and Pooplord and no one blinked an eye? More importantly, why wasn't life a video game?
Speaking of Elia losing out, so much for reassuring Elia about the fleas. Kris winced as the other girl gave the puppy a wide berth, like he was radioactive instead of just a little dirty. At least she wasn't demanding the puppy get kicked out immediately, that was good! Okay, bathing the puppy was going to be her first priority. No question about that.
And, well, it'd make sense for her to know these things, she did help out with other peoples' dogs all the time growing up and she worked at a pet shop and- wait a minute, did Ani just call her a Disney princess? Dog whisperer was one thing; she had been called something along those lines a million times before. But Disney princess... she frowned slightly as a slight flush lit up her cheeks. Ani wouldn't making fun of her, would she? No, she was too nice to do something like that, but even if she wasn't, being compared to a princess was- "I'm not a Disney princess." She retorted firmly, despite the overwhelming evidence to support the contrary. All she needed was a wicked stepmother and she'd have her own movie.
Getting back to more important matters, like walking puppies. Elia's suggestion of posting up their schedules would work; they were going to have to figure out what to do with him though when no one was home to walk him. She seriously doubted he was house trained, and until he was there was probably going to be a few accidents. (Note to self, put all perishables out of reach of curious puppy teeth.) "Okay. And the three of us can sneak him out better than just one." It was true; it would be a tactical advantage!

Say what you wanted about her, but at least she lived most of her life in relative honesty. It was the only way she could sleep at night, with all the other lies that she perpetuated. Ani had made a career out of lying, for heaven's sake. While it was for the good of humanity, and she had a lot of fun coming up with the stories, one had to admit that it wasn't always the sort of business that they would want their children to get mixed up into. Being the way she was was the only way she could justify how she wanted to be treated by others.
"We could call him 'dog' for two weeks, though that might get a little complicated," Ani said. She leaned in, tapping the puppy on the nose, giggling as it let out a little yowl of happiness. "He's so cute, I really hope we get to keep him." Eilia backing up and her changed expression didn't go unnoticed, though. The girl couldn't help but shoot the other a sideways glance. She liked Ellie, she really did, but she was obviously not saying something that was on her mind. For a moment, Ani thought of calling her out on this bullshit, but decided against it.
For one, Eilia had already agreed, and there was no sense shaking that.
For another, she really, really wanted the dog.
"We'll be fine. No, really. Don't worry too much about it. Kris works for a pet store, she knows what she's doing, so you can definitely talk to her if you have any doubts. As for you," she said, turning to Kris with a contrastingly sunny smile, "Yes you're a Disney Princess. You go about rescuing strays and bringing them back. Maybe if you started singing, we'd start getting birds and bees in our apartment."
"And schedules. I work kind of... Irregular hours." Not a lie either. She was pretty sure that the girls had heard her bolting out at 4 a.m. to work on the Sharknado story. She hadn't been able to shut up about how ridiculous it had been for days. Ani would know-- she'd been the one to make that shit up. "Don't wait around for me. I'll join you guys whenever I can."
