alec matthews Not sleeping was a serious crime in Alec's book. It left him feeling cranky and awfully hungry, and it was only made worse by the fact that he couldn't even properly talk without crying out in excruciating pain. It was rather ridiculous the situation he had been placed in. That stupid scroll...if he hadn't been so curious about it, Alec would have already tried to rip it to shreds. It did nothing but keep him up at night, which was causing him to feel groggy during the day.
Now, he found himself standing in the middle of a host of shops, all outdoors and each vendor selling their own unique items. The teen wasn't exaclty sure how he managed to make it out over here from the beach, but the point was that he was here now and he was going to make the best of it. That's when he was hit with a sudden idea. If I'm not able to sleep, maybe I can find a sleep aid and I'll be able to sleep through this possessed piece of paper's annoying fluttering at night... Yeah good thing he didn't say that aloud or else the two middle-aged women standing beside him would probably have mistaken him for...where was he going with that thought? He couldn't remember.
Shoving his hands in his pocket, Alec began to stroll around the area looking to see if anyone had some unique herbal remedies he could find. For some strange reason, Alec had never been to this part of Los Angeles very much. He couldn't imagine why, either - there were so many unique things to purchase! He found himself rather occupied while searching for a miracle drug, hoping to finally find some sleep. What he ended up with was a bag full of candy. It wasn't going to help with his workouts, but Alec didn't care at the time. He saw candy and he took it. Now he had a plastic bag full of sweet treats that were so very unhealthy, but he didn't care.
Now I can't give up. I better make another round to see if I missed anything...

tagged: Alec Matthiews time: May 15, 8AM. speech: Jun Shi. notes: - - -. It wasn’t often that Jun Shi came around to these parts unless he was called there on specific business. His business, of course, wasn’t always pleasant. Work was work, though. Kun Shui had the family’s triad and company, and he had shady dealings in classy suits over hearts and kidneys, over injectable clear liquids and missing persons. Nonetheless if people wanted him, he usually called them to Chinatown to talk business.
His own time was still his own time, though. Jun Shi savoured it like no tomorrow because just looking at his twin made him exhausted. Poor thing never had any sort of time for anything, so he liked to make the best of his much looser schedule. What drew him to the promenade that day was anybody’s guess, though. Perhaps some little stores to catch his eye, or maybe a few trinkets to hoard away like a crow. He might even find something useful.
He was looking for nothing in particular, and when he was aimless, his eyes wandered to people. There was a lady selling candies out of a stall on the side of the road, and though Jun Shi did have somewhat of a sweet tooth, it was more for cakes than anything else. Another young man was selling homemade bags, and yet another person called his wares of home made dishes straight out of the kiln.
Ah, what a busy place. He loved it.
His eyes settled on another young man of about… eighteen? Nineteen? Fairly young anyways, wandering as aimlessly as he was with a bag of candy in hand. He turned to watch him over his shoulder as he walked past. Looks like Jun Shi found his victim of the day.

alec matthews It was bad enough not knowing your way around a giant market full of vendors selling all sorts of neat things, but now he had somehow gotten completely disoriented and ended up on a bench outside of the market. It didn't take long before he let out a sigh of frustration. What had he come to the market again for? By now Alec had forgotten all about his purpose and sat on the bench with the bag of candy next to him. He would get into it later, but right now he just wanted to stop and relax for a minute.
And relax he did! It wasn't long before Alec drifted off to sleep, blissfully unaware of his surroundings. He didn't have to worry about that confounded scroll getting in his way of sleeping here, which meant that his sleep could go uninterrupted for hours. Luckily, it was nowhere near that long. The teen awoke, disoriented and quite startled. How long was I asleep...oh I can't believe I just did that.
Alec stood from his spot and stretched, trying to work out his rather sore muscles. There was also a small reminder of his brief nap - a spot of saliva seeping from the right corner of his mouth. He wiped it casually, hoping no one had noticed his awkward mannerisms. Before he could fall asleep again, he picked up his bag of candy, walked, two steps, and dropped it, spilling the contents all over the ground.
For a moment, Alec stood there unsure of how to react. He was irritated, only got in a small bit of sleep in a public area, he had no one to gripe and complain to, and there was this strange urge to just rage and destroy something. This lack of sleep was starting to severely effect him, and it was becoming too much. He had to find something to help him sleep...
Oh! That's what I came here for...Well, dang. He sighed wearily, deciding to simply leave his candy lying there. If each piece was individually wrapped he would have been okay, but now it was all covered in dirt and the ants would be there soon. Shrugging his shoulders and trying to pretend that he didn't care, he focused his eyes back in the direction where he thought the market was, trying to remember exactly where he was too.

tagged: Alec Matthiews time: May 15, 8AM. speech: Jun Shi. notes: - - -. Lucien aside, victimizing wasn’t exactly something he sought out and… well, no, that was a lie. He grinned to himself just a little as the thought crossed his mind. What in the world was he talking about? Victimizing was practically his pastime. Hell, it was straight up his hobby at most points, finding innocent people to lure out and dangle things they wanted in front of their faces. That one blond… What was his name? That Kingston guy; oh yes, he dangled things right in front of his face, alright.
There was nothing particularly interesting about the boy, realistically speaking. Perhaps he’d spent too long pent up. It went for much too long where he didn’t have any new leads on his current little hunt, and that frustrated him. Where was that one little blond rat? Nothing could hide from Jun Shi for long, but this one was elusive for longer than he’d like. He was looking to get some energy out, and the dark-haired boy seemed perfect enough.
The boy walked away, and Jun Shi ghosted after him, lurking just out of reach as he wandered until they reached just outside the market… to take a nap? Well, that sure as hell was boring, now wasn’t it? Jun Shi sniffed, immediately disinterested, before wandering away back to the market.
It was only about half an hour later that he got curious and wandered back. The boy would’ve definitely woken up by now, right? Oh, there he was, just stirring, getting up and clumsily spilling the bag of candy he had. Pathetic little thing, now wasn’t he?
Jun Shi lurked just a little closer, still offering up a small grin in case he happened to look over. ”Say, do you need any help?” His tone was almost too sweet, the soft grin growing just a little too wide.

alec matthews Alec was too busy shielding his hand over his eyes to notice that someone had been watching him. He never was the most perceptive kid, so it wasn't surprising that he could easily be watched. His index finger pointed in the opposite direction of the market as he whispered Did I come from that direction...No wait it was the other way....or wait maybe it was this way... If anyone had been watching, it would be clear that Alec was very lost, which was something he wasn't really used to. Typically when he went on his multiple hour walks he had no problem with navigating the city. It was something he prided himself in! But now, being in this unfamiliar area, he really had no idea where exactly he was...
The sudden presence of a voice made Alec jump a bit. He turned to find a taller male, somewhat plain in appearance. He had long black hair, which was odd enough for a male in general, but he was able to pull it off - probably because of his ethnicity. What startled Alec most was that he seemed friendly enough and was trying to offer him assistance. Did i really look that lost? Probably so.
"Well, thanks I actually could use some help...I, er, dropped my candy and...well, I honestly don't think it's any good right now. Can you at least tell me which direction the markets are in?" He nervously scratched the back of his neck, letting a small chuckle escape from his parched lips. For some reason he felt a bit uncomfortable admitting the he was lost. Well everyone had their vices, and getting lost once definitely was no big deal.

tagged: Alec Matthiews time: May 15, 8AM. speech: Jun Shi. notes: - - -. Lost, huh? Lost ones were always fun to deal with. They were vulnerable in that sense, just out of touch with their surroundings enough to warrant some help. Jun Shi was probably the very, very last person one should ask for help from. Jun Shi was the one person your parents warned you about when they taught you stranger danger. He was the one that would sneak you away and you’d wake up in an ice bath with a kidney missing.
When around Jun Shi, getting lost was a big deal.
”Oh.” His voice was silk, taking a step closer, his eyes going down to the scattered candies on the ground. He wasn’t a fan of candy, all truth told. He preferred cake. No loss, though. ”Pity. Little hard to get lost in a place like this, don’t you think?” There was the very bare edge of a taunt in his voice, the way his weight tilted just a little to his right, and then he straightened up again.
”No matter. The market, you say?” It wasn’t far from here.

alec matthews Every now and then, normal people could pick up on things that otherwise would be somewhat subtle. There were also those people that had a knack for being perceptive, noticing the most minute of details on most occasions. And then there were people like Alec who, unfortunately for him, had no idea that he was playing with fire. This man seemed nice enough, but Alec wasn't unnerved by the way he shifted his weight, or the way he spoke softly, or even just his demeanor in general. Alec had no idea that this was probably a man to be feared.
"Yeah well I'm usually not around these parts very often. I'm pretty sure it's that way -" Alec pointed in the correct direction of the market "- but I guess I'm just not certain." He had a knack for being honest, despite it probably not being the best alternative in this scenario. Those dark, dark eyes looked up and down at the man in front of him, trying to get a feel for who he was. He seemed friendly enough, right?
"That candy...well, I guess it's not all that big of a deal. I can get more." He smiled warmly at the man before asking him for confirmation. "It is that way, right?"

tagged: Alec Matthiews time: May 15, 8AM. speech: Jun Shi. notes: - - -. Poor boy could’ve been staring right into a dragon’s maw and he would’ve smiled on and kept walking right in. Thankfully, he didn’t have anything out on him so that Jun Shi would seek him specifically… it was just bad luck, or else there would be a hard-to-ignore element of persistence.
But nobody had given him a briefcase full of bills to hunt the boy down, so he wouldn’t snap his head off quite yet. He grinned at him a little more, nodding vaguely when he pointed in the direction of the marketplace. ”Well yes, I think that’d be about right.” A halfway ambiguous answer, shifting his weight again to the other leg.
He should’ve felt bad, closing in on a boy so young like that. Then again, he was about eighteen, and at that age, you were obligated to handle yourself. ”Getting lost while it’s so close by… where else do you get lost, huh?”

alec matthews For starters, Alec still wasn't catching on to the rather intrusive wording this man was using. All he could think to say was "Okay cool. Thanks a lot!" But the man wasn't finished talking, so Alec stuck around for a bit longer. Maybe he'd be making a new friend today! While the boy was still very sleep-deprived and feeling on edge, he had no idea that this man was not what he appeared to be. In fact, in Alec's mind, this was just a kind stranger willing to help out a lost soul. The world needs more people like him...
But as soon as he finished that sentence within the confines of his own twisted mind, he regretted thinking that. The tall man's next comment came across a bit more harsh than the teenager was expecting, but he brushed it off like he was simply trying to joke around. But the teen had a feeling that this "kind" stranger wasn't perhaps as kind as he previously thought.
"Well, I'm actually pretty good with directions...just get a little disoriented at times." This time his voice was a little louder and more direct, but still as polite as he could possibly muster. That last comment hit a bit of a sore spot with Alec. He prided himself of being able to navigate much of Los Angeles, and he wasn't about to sit here and be scolded for getting lost one time.
I might have just taken it the wrong way, though.

tagged: Alec Matthiews time: May 15, 8AM. speech: Jun Shi. notes: - - -. As kind as a rattlesnake could be. Go ahead and pet him; Jun Shi was bound to nip off the tip of a finger or so. If anything, he was finding himself getting halfway amused with the utter obliviousness of the boy, but if he continued that way, he’d soon grow bored. Heck, if the boy hadn’t reacted at all, he’d have been a lot safer than how he did react.
Just barely, though. His voice got a bit sharper, but he was still soft around the edges. Strike fast, then recoil, watch and repeat. He surely found a soft spot when the boy seemed to get a little riled over the fact that he questioned his directional ability.
”A little disoriented…” He seemed to think on that a little, then grinned at him again. ”Hey, what’s your name, anyways?” He wanted to at least call the kid by name when he was taunting him.

alec matthews "Yes, a little disoriented. It happens when you've never been to an area and you fall asleep. Oh well..." For now, he was able to keep his cool, but for how much longer he was unable to tell. His blood pressure was rising slightly but he was doing a decent job at keeping cool. For some reason, it seemed like this man was just picking at him. Maybe he didn't mean it to come across that way, sure, but the fact of the matter was that it did. And it hurt a little. Combined with the fact that sleep was an unknown entity to Alec, he wasn't feeling the very best.
"I'm Alec. It's nice to meet you. What's your name?" Alec extended his own hand in a friendly handshake, hoping to at least ease the tension between the two. It was all he knew what to do at this point. Hopefully, though, this would make things a little better. He didn't want to be on bitter terms with this stranger, but...well, it finally hit him. Why did it matter what this stranger thought of him? It was probably because Alec didn't really like it when people didn't like him. It wasn't that he thought everyone had to like him, but it felt more real when that person was standing in front of you and making you feel uncomfortable while making slightly sour comments about one's ability to navigate.
Yeah Alec really didn't have to get along with him, but he still wanted to. But he wasn't going to break his back trying either.

tagged: Alec Matthiews time: May 15, 8AM. speech: Jun Shi. notes: - - -. It seemed that, just like that, the boy made a new opening for himself. He’d almost wholly forgotten that the kid, Alex, was asleep before and that was why he’d grown bored of him first. Jun Shi was good at finding things, often very small things, to nag people about. It was perhaps a learned ability; his parents had, after all, done the same thing to the twins as they grew up. They moulded them with nagging and harsh words and ever rising goals towards perfection.
”Little Phoenix.” Jun Shi said, as if it were a normal name. He’d been given that nickname so long ago that he didn’t even remember why or how he’d gotten it. Perhaps it had been a nanny who noticed his spitfire attitude, or maybe a friend during one of those childhood phases.
”Falling asleep in strange places? Sounds a little dangerous, don’t you think?” He held onto Alex’s hand for a second or two longer than was comfortable, then let go.

alec matthews Was it getting hot outside, or was it just Alec? He honestly couldn't tell right now. Something that normally wouldn't pick up on the boldest of hints managed to detect an abnormality in this other man. There was just something about him that made the teenager feel...weak. Uncomfortable. Nervous. Alec didn't really like that feeling, either. He was already meek enough; the workouts were coming along, but he hadn't magically transformed into a lean mean fighting machine within the last 60 days. No, he was still pretty weak, and he had no idea whatsoever about protecting himself in a scrimmage.
And right now, in this moment, he felt vulnerable. Something about this man was just not right. It also might have had something to do with the fact that he introduced himself as Little Phoenix. What kind of name was that, an Indian tribe name? Name given to a gang member? Secret law enforcement agent? Whatever it was Alec didn't care for it.
He was starting to get a little more irritated when the man kept pushing him about his sleeping habits. Instead of responding with a nice explanation of why he had managed to fall asleep in public, he simply cut the conversation a bit short, unwilling to give out more information that he needed. "Just really tired, I guess. I'm awake now though." His voice had become a bit stronger and his stance was a little taller. It wasn't much, but Alec was hoping that he could prove himself confident and that he wasn't a sitting target for some weird robbery or something. All he wanted to do right now was to give off just the right kind of vibes. He assumed it to be his survival instinct.
Then again, he might just be overreacting to the entire thing.

tagged: Alec Matthiews time: May 15, 8AM. speech: Jun Shi. notes: - - -. The kid was becoming more and more riled, and Jun Shi was practically wagging his tail at him. If anything, he’d egg him on a little more, have his fun, then be on his way. He was at the market to find a person, after all, not distract himself with some helpless kid falling asleep in weird places.
But his contact could wait, now could he? Of course. Jun Shi was the one calling the shots and if he was much too impatient to wait for him, then he wasn’t getting his business. That one guy… Gabriel Kingston, it was. He had been waiting quite a while for any sort of news on his brother and it was unfortunate that Jun Shi had yet to find a hair. It was weird, really. He’d usually have picked up on something by now.
But back to the task on hand. Little Alec, fell asleep on a bench and was now being watched by something a little more dangerous than your average stray. Jun Shi was being purposefully pushy, wondering how pushy he really had to get to get this boy to become suspicious. Most people would’ve backed off by now.
”A tad touchy, now are we?” He purred, his voice low, his smile growing a tad too wide.

alec matthews What had angered Alec most of all was not the way that this man was speaking to him nor the words that were being said. Alec was mad at himself for not catching onto this guy before. So far, he was a total jerk, and Alec was not ready to get into a squabble with him. It was getting time to head back home so he could sleep. Earlier this morning he had met with an interesting man that could not hear while on his stroll through the beach. He managed to nod off a few times here and there, which got him through the morning successfully. By now, Alec was tired enough to sleep almost anywhere he needed to, so he was going to head back home at get some rest.
Maybe.
This guy, though...for some reason or another, he was trying Alec. He was trying him so badly. Already his patience was wearing thin, and the teenager was in no mood to keep up this conversation any longer. It took all he could do to bite his tongue, knowing fully well that his agitation was probably showing on his face. And it was starting to become something more...weird, actually. Alec had never really felt this way about someone, but he honestly did not like this man. Not one bit. He could not find it in himself to be nice to this man. All he wanted him to do was to go play in traffic. Maybe it was the lack of sleep causing him to feel like this in a rather extreme way, but it was really annoying him more than anything. But instead of staying quiet, he stood is ground firmly. "Maybe." Somehow Alec was able to maintain eye contact, and he did not blink.

tagged: Alec Matthiews time: May 15, 8AM. speech: Jun Shi. notes: - - -. Ah, there it was. There was that flash of anger across his features, the recoil, then the supress as he tried to get himself under control. The boy looked drawn, borderline tired, and he almost wagged his tail at that look. Such a pretty look on so many people, though. The boy, Alec, was really no different. He didn’t think to spend long lingering, and he thought it’d be better to do more productive things. After all, he had bigger fish to fry than a little boy.
Just a maybe? Really? How boring was this?
Jun Shi grinned a little, but his brow furrowed ever so slightly. Ah, yes, better things to do than taunt a boy in a park. Perhaps he’d find him again sometime soon, when he was at a more advantuous angle. For now, he simply thought that he was growing a tad bored, and this boy wasn’t helping.
His expression turned from interested to bored in a split second. Yeah, not too impressed, he’d say. ”Be careful, kid.” He said simply, that little smile just barely returning as Jun Shi turned on his heels, starting to stride away.

alec matthews So that was it? After being harassed by this man, he just turns around and leaves? Alec felt proud of himself for standing up, but he knew that deep down he was feeling ten kinds of anxious and scared. But the man was leaving, and that was just fine. He didn't appreciate him and his "help" because it was anything but helpful. Alec would be able to find the market on his own, whether it took him five minutes or five hours. He wouldn't be stopping to ask anyone else, either. He didn't feel like risking running into another jerk.
The teen watched him as he walked away, slowly realizing that he wanted run up behind the man and hit him in the back of the head as hard as he could. But as the thought crossed his mind, he felt ashamed that he even considered it. That reminded him of the boy that he hit before, and it brought back bad memories. For whatever reason, Alec had earned himself an enemy today, and he hoped that he would never have to speak or look at him ever again. He turned around and looked at his surroundings, hoping to find something that looked familiar. Still unsure, he chose the direction opposite of the direction that jerk was heading and began walking, hoping to find where he was soon enough.
