There was a plague of bad drivers in LA on this fine summer day, if by plague you mean one person and that person being the STUDENT DRIVER terrorizing Chinatown.
After waking up in Neil's apartment (again) and freaking out (again), Kris had begrudgingly gotten a lift him from him so she could stop in at her place really quick. If they were going out for lunch, she absolutely refused to walk around in the same clothes she wore to Disney Land. And slept in. And cleaned a flat in, but that's all besides the point! At least his place was a lot better now, though she somehow sincerely doubted that it was going to stay that way for long. From what she had seen so far, Neil was something like a little kid when it came to picking up after himself. It was kind of amazing, but that was Neil for you.
They had already had lunch and were walking around when it happened. The Encounter. Kris had been crossing the street when a car emblazoned with a STUDENT DRIVER sticker had come pealing around the corner at full speed, racing down the pavement towards her. Holy shit, was this person on drugs? Drunk??? Who knows, but they were getting dangerously close to the brunette now and weren't showing any signs of slowing down any time soon.
She was suddenly pulled out of the road and onto the crosswalk by one Neelanjan Martin, seconds before the car came to a screeching stop just inches away from where she had been walking a moment before. Kris blinked at the vehicle, confused, before the car took off speeding again, turning down another corner and out of sight. "Well okay then." She remarked with a burst of laughter, perplexed and amused more than anything by what in the world had just happened.
Some people just really shouldn't be allowed to drive.

Neil hadn't honestly believed that Kris was going to die. Not even for a moment.
As soon as he'd seen the student driver speeding towards the two of them at breakneck speed, he had immediately taken action. No, there was no way she was going to die, not on his watch! His fingers curled around Kristen's arm, and he yanked her onto the crosswalk, heaving a sigh of relief as the driver blazed by the two of them.
"Wow, that was close," he found himself saying as he watched the STUDENT DRIVER charge into the distance, ready to kill some unsuspecting passenger. "Who would have thought that driving was ever so difficult for anyone, huh?" Neil said, letting out a little laugh. His eyes met Kristen's, and he leaned in closer. A smirk curled up on his lips.
"You're reacting pretty well for someone who almost got run over," he teased. "Are you sure you know how to cross the street properly?"

"Some people just aren't cut out for it." She mused, shrugging as she watched the car disappear out of sight. Kris was a pretty good driver, if she did say so herself, but she knew plenty of people who had just barely passed their test. And some people who really shouldn't have passed their test at all. But still, stepping on the gas like that the entire time was a little ridiculous, even by bad driving standards. Hopefully no one was actually killed by them, whoever they were.
Kris took a deep breath, then let it out slowly. Okay, everything was hunky-dory, nothing to get freaked out about. It was done, let it go, move on. She glanced up at Neil, only to find he was leaning in towards her, smirking at her. "What?" She asked irritatedly, frowning at him. His reply made her pause, biting her bottom lip before saying, "It all happened so fast, I didn't really have time to panic." True enough, she supposed; there had been some fear, sure, but otherwise it hadn't been all that bad. "I'm fine though, so I don't see what the big deal is."
His question made her glare at him, however, and she actually crossed her arms over her chest at the implication that she was, was stupid, or something. "And yes, I know how to cross the street." She retorted, sticking her tongue out at him like that was going to prove anything. "Can we go already?" She was sooo done with this now, kthnx. |

Neil nodded at his friend's comment. He'd known some pretty bad drivers in his lifetime. His mother was a pretty decent one, but his dad, on the other hand? Nope, that wasn't something he wished to discuss at this stage. He even insisted on speeding when the road rules explicitly told you not to, and while Neil had always found that rather amusing his mother was not. Sitting in his father's car was kind of fun though-- he'd learned to think of it as some sort of roller coaster ride.
However, there were certain matters that he didn't quite agree with. Such as Kristen's statement about not making a big deal. This was amazing fodder for teasing. Who in their right mind was going to let this go? "Are you sure, though?" Neil practically beamed as he pulled away ever so slightly. His hand was now resting on her shoulder, and for a moment it seemed like he was going to pull her into an embrace. But no. Before he knew what he was doing, he found his hand trailing down to her wrist.
"Maybe I should hold your hand to keep you safe from all the crazy drivers," he jibed. "Can't have you running off and dying on me so soon after we met up, can we?"
Neil froze. Wait. What-- what was he even saying? But the words had left his mouth. There was no taking them back. He wasn't going to-- he wasn't going to act like he, well, cared enough or anything. No.

He was acting weird, which usually didn't spell anything good for her. "Yeah?" She answered his question, perplexed. Of course she knew how to cross a street; it was one of the first things you got taught as a kid, right? She uncrossed her arms as he moved away, only to find him placing a hand on her shoulder. Okay, this was getting slightly bizarre now; she raised a brow at him as she waited for what he'd do next. She hadn't been expecting a hug or anything like that, since Neil had proven twice now that he kind of sucked at those. What she really hadn't been expecting, however, was his hand traveling down her arm to stop at her wrist.
Wait, what?
"No."
She stared at him, absolutely horrified as her face began to flush. Probably all according to his evil, nefarious plan, but it wasn't like she could help it. It wasn't like this was the first time they had held hands or anything, either; that had been at Disney Land. But holding her hand in a crowded area was one thing! That had a reason, a purpose! This was just- no. She could feel her face getting hotter and hotter as he kept his hand on her wrist- oh god what was he even saying what the hell.
Kris managed to frown up at him as she retorted, face hot with embarrassment, "I'm not a little kid, I know how to cross a street, and I don't need you to hold my hand." He had to be joking, he wasn't serious, right? Right??? She quickly added, "It's not like it'll stop me from getting hit by a car or anything anyway." Hand holding didn't immediately make you immune to getting hurt or injured or dying. Apparently Neil hadn't gotten the memo. |

He had proposed to hold her hand. Yes, he had proposed to hold her hand. Was that taking a step too far? This was something friends were supposed to do, tease each other, but was this toeing the line into flirting? He didn't know how to flirt. He probably couldn't have done it if he tried. Neil knew he was good-looking, yes, but... No. No. Be calm. Or at least, appear calm. If he owned it, if he acted like it wasn't going to be over the top, it wouldn't be. So he smiled, allowing his hand to slide down from her wrist, clasping his fingers in hers.
"It doesn't hurt to try, does it?"
He was tempted to wink, but held himself back. No, he'd gone too far even for not. He waited a moment to make sure that she wasn't going to protest too much or say that this was ridiculously awkward, before continuing, "Besides, this will stop you from running away. We can't have that happening. Who knows what might happen to you if you go too far without supervision?"
(Don't leave me. I don't know if I could handle it.)
"So," Neil asked, bumping his shoulder against Kris', "Shall we?" He didn't answer the statement about it being able to stop her from being hit by a car. Though it would mean that if they died, they died together. He wasn't going to die yet, though-- there was too much that he had to do!

She didn't have a reply for that. It really wouldn't hurt, after all; they were just holding hands. No big deal, right? She was the one between the two of them blowing this up into a bigger deal than it actually was- friends could hold hands. It was a friendly thing to do. It was just the way he was going about it was seriously rude- she didn't need a babysitter, thanks. Also, his fingers lacing through her's made her blush even harder, if that was even possible.
"Umm-" Ah, so eloquent. Kristen truly was a master of the English language, as you can clearly see from this example. What he said next actually did tick her off, though, and she momentarily forgot all about her embarrassment enough to snap back, irritated, "What the hell, I'm not a pet dog. And I don't need supervision, I'm not a kid!" Okay seriously, she would have been totally fine with holding hands if he hadn't been such an ass about it. Maybe. Possibly. She would have still been a stupid, incoherent mess either way, but now he was being a jerk!
He bumped his shoulder against her's, but she was too grumpy to find his antics very endearing. What did he think she was going to do, run into traffic for the fun of it? It wasn't like she had a death wish or anything, she had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. "You suck." She declared with a frown, still blushing despite her objections. Holding hands was dumb, but she wasn't about to be the first one to let go. It was like a game of chicken: if she let go, she was admitting defeat. Because obviously, this wasn't a big deal. Obviously. |

Yeah, he had been thinking too much on it. He had been making mountains out of molehills, and it was totally okay for the two of them to hold hands like this. Neil shot Kris a smile that could have been either calm or bashful, you could take a pick. He wasn't going to tell you which it was. Not today.
"I didn't say that you were a pet dog. Dogs don't have hands to hold!" For all the thoughts that were swimming through his mind, Neil was doing quite the good job of keeping his tone calm. He'd made the suggestion, so he was just going through with it. It was totally normal. In fact, he gave her hand a little squeeze. "You're a human, and I'd feel bad if a fellow human got hurt because I didn't take action. Just doing my part for society." It was then when Kris mentioned that he sucked.
Neil actually chuckled out loud.
"Aww, thank you. I don't think I've had such a wonderful compliment from someone in such a long time." The more he acted like this didn't bother him, the more it would end up bothering Kris. He had figured it out before she did, and it was hilarious. "So, how are we going to go and get lunch? Will we have to hold things one-handed? This holding hands thing might be difficult, but it's the least that I can do to keep you safe."

"Neeeil." Had he been this infuriating to talk to on Skype? Kris couldn't for the life of her remember, and she was finding it increasingly difficult at the moment to remember just why she came to California in the first place. She bumped her head against his shoulder for a second as they walked, trying to remind herself that he was a good friend with positive qualities. Sometimes. Occasionally. Give her a minute, she'd try to recall one or two reasons why she was friends with him.
... Nope, she had nothing.
Frustration colored her tone as she replied, exasperated, "But I'm not going to run away!" Honestly, the way he was talking to her really did make it sound like she was a pet or child, about to run into the street at any given moment just for the hell of it. And then he made that comment about doing society a favor, and her eyes rolled so far back into her head she could see into infinity. She let out a loud sigh, before deadpanning, "You're full of shit." And the more time she spent with him in real life, the more and more she was finding it was true.
But then he had the nerve to say she was complimenting him? Holy crap, he was exactly like a 5-year-old! Between his messy apartment and this, it was becoming increasingly obvious that Neil was actually a toddler. AMAZING. "It wasn't-" She couldn't even finish what she was going to say, though, when he continued talking. "It's not-" Again, here we see Kristen displaying her mastery over the English language. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. SOS, please send help before she decided food wasn't worth this and bailed on him.
"I'm not holding your hand the whole time." She replied- and she was absolutely dead set on that, at least. He had to be teasing her, because if he thought she was going to eat one-handed he had another thing coming. Plus there was just no way in hell she was going to hold his hand for the rest of the day. This entire thing was stupid. He was stupid. She was stupid. Whoever invented hand holding was stupid. Everyone was stupid. |

But if she let him, Neil could give Kris plenty of reasons that they were friends. At least, from his perspective. She was intelligent, she was witty, she was funny to laugh at and laugh with. Which was a lot more than the people he had surrounded himself with all this while, really. The boy shot her a wicked grin as he raised a brow yet again. "Aww, really?"
She really made doing this too easy for him. All he had to do was to goad her a little here, prod her a little there and bam, she would produce some sort of response. It was highly interesting for Neil, even as some sort of anthropological study. "Come on, dessert is calling. I can already taste the bubble tea," he said, still not letting go of her hand.
Neil never denied the fact that he was full of shit.
Besides, weren't they all? The words and the phrases used to impress others, to show everyone a certain side of yourself. He was scared of failure, after all, or at least, to look like he had failed. Which was why he was still holding onto her even if his heart was thumping against his ribcage, if the questions swirling through his mind were telling him no, no, no, this might be a bad idea.
Yet despite what she was saying, Kris had yet to pull away. Maybe that said something in itself. A pang of hope passed through his chest, a red-hot bright flash of warmth that shocked him as it exploded within, before dissipating through his very being and granting him with a sense of calm. At least, he hoped it was hope. (Oh, the irony.)
He hadn't allowed himself to feel that in all too long a time. But there was no thinking about this too much. Instead, Neil just continued on his way. "I told you, this is for your sake, not mine," he jibed. "I'm doing my part as a responsible adult. Now just be calm and allow me to take the lead, okay?"

A startling new discovery in the world of science, details at 6. It wasn't all that surprising, though, if she was going to be honest. She should have known from the start. Kris couldn't help but grin a little, however, as she replied teasingly, "I'm going to eat so much you'll have to roll me out." She was so so so glad that she didn't have to watch what she ate when she went out with him- Neil didn't care in the slightest how much she ate in one sitting. What a relief.
(And sorry to burst your bubble, Neil, but the only reason she was still holding your hand was because she was playing a game of chicken with herself. She would have let go a long time ago if she didn't feel like she had something to prove- now, whether she was trying to prove something to herself or to him was up for debate. Don't question it.)
Despite how she was acting, she still hadn't quite forgotten that he was holding her hand- how could she, when their entire conversation up to this point had centered around it? Or the fact that, y'know, it was kind of hard to forget about it when their fingers were interlaced and oh no she was blushing again. "No, you're taking sick joy out of this." She remarked dryly, a grimace on her lips as she said, "I bet you hired that driver to almost hit me just so you'd have an excuse to hold my hand."

There was more to Kris than just a laughing stock though, and Neil knew that all too well. Hadn't all their Skype conversations and hours of instant messaging been enough to assure her of that? He knew she had self-esteem issues, which was fair-- he on the other hand had a rather bad case of an ego gone unchecked. "You can try," he said. After all the Chinese food that they'd had for lunch (which Neil had gladly paid for, as promised), he was quite sure that Kris would be at least a little more full than she was before.
"We only need one hand to drink bubble tea, so I think you'll be okay in terms of being able to consume." Another wink, another reminder that she had almost been run over. Another stab of white-hot warmth through his chest. "Careful that science doesn't hit before comedic effect, and you explode of excessive consumption before I can roll you away!" It was then when she accused him of hiring a driver, and he turned to her, tilting his head to the side, feigning confusion--
"Yeah, I did."
When would she ever learn that he was just going to keep agreeing with her until she was driven around the bend? No? Never? Okay, that suited him just fine. He could deal with that. Kristen Mayor needed some serious lessons in deflection, if you asked him.
"It was all just a giant excuse. I'm sorry!"
(He never denied that he enjoyed holding her hand. Not at all.)

Kris absolutely refused to hold his hand while drinking tea. Thanks but no thanks, she did have her limits with how long she was going to go along with this. She had already decided that as soon as they got to their destination, she was letting go and putting her hands in her pockets and that would be the end of that. "But I told you, I'm not holding your hand the whole time. And I sincerely doubt I'll be in danger of getting hit by a car while we're drinking tea." Unless a car crashed through the wall and hit her??? Now that'd be something.
"I won't let that happen, don't worry." Science wasn't going to get the better of her this time! What a way to go, though. Exploding from eating too much. Man, that was how she wanted to die. Forget getting hit by a car, she'd much rather gorge herself on food and implode, leaving behind a giant black hole to swallow the world and everything in it. But especially Neil. Definitely Neil.
When he turned to her with his head cocked to one side and a confused expression on his face, she knew what was coming. He was playing along, agreeing with her outlandish claim just so he could laugh at her reaction. And there it was, the confession that he did hire a driver to almost kill her. Thanks, Neil. You really are a true pal. "I knew it." Well, two could play that game, right? She let out a mock sigh, shoulders slumped as she told him, "You really are the worst." It wasn't even an opinion anymore: it was a statement of fact at this point.
You know what?
Fuck it.
She'd just have to accept it: she had shit taste in friends, and she was just going to have to suck it up and deal with it. It could be worse, after all; so she shrugged, smiled, and said, "Oh well, what's done is done." The brunette then rubbed her thumb against the back of his hand, as she remarked, expression deadpan, "You could have asked instead of going through all that trouble, you know. And what if the driver really had killed me?" Have fun living with a guilty conscious forever, moron. |

"Didn't you hear about the police car crashing into a karaoke place in Little Tokyo? Things like that do happen, and it doesn't hurt to play it safe." There was some truth to his words. Much as he would have liked to pretend, he did generally err on the side of caution. There were many things in the world that he would have tried his hand at if he had the time and ability, but most of all, his upbringing meant that he was more calculative than you would want to think. More meticulous. More thoughtful.
"If I've got my hand in yours by then, at least I'll be able to pull you free when the crazy police come crashing in."
Never mind what he'd just said about thoughtful. Where were these words coming from? Most of all, where were these thoughts coming from? Neil always knew he was charming and could probably smile his way out of any situation, but was he... Was this flirting? Most definitely, anyone would be able to tell you that. But was this going a step too far? Okay, okay. Keep calm. Neil took a deep breath, making sure she wasn't looking. She was questioning him about it again, and he was going to have to come up with an answer.
"That would be a pity, but I suppose collateral damage is a thing that can happen under these circumstances." Nailed it. Then again, it really wasn't difficult to consistently agree with everything that Kris brought up. "But it didn't happen. I only ever hire the best, after all." He cast her a look that was like a puppy beaming, trying to gain approval from his master. Oh, the fun of being a mature adult!

Kris was something of a conundrum when it came to playing things safe; on the one hand, starting a conversation with a complete stranger? Haha no thanks she'd rather get hit by a train. Taking walks in the middle of the night in a notoriously dangerous city though? No problem. Her idea of what was safe and what was dangerous was slightly skewed compared to most. But Neil's was way more out there than her's, if he thought holding her hand while drinking bubble tea was playing it safe. What a dumbie.
"Thanks, make sure they play Kesha at my funeral." She replied almost cheerfully, because it was becoming increasingly obvious that according to Neil, she was going to die today. His hired driver couldn't do it, so now he was going to finish the job. Curse his sudden but inevitable betrayal! This proved her right, though: she really did have shit taste in friends. Maybe she should just stop trying and go live as a hermit in the hills of Spain with a hundred dogs to keep her company. Actually, that didn't sound so bad at all. As long as she had Internet!
She missed the deep breath he took, but that was only because she was too busy trying to see if they were getting close yet. They had to be getting there soon, right? They couldn't just keep walking forever. But Neil was the one leading the way, so... oh no what if he really was planning on walking forever like this. Oh nooo. "Ah, so I'm collateral damage." She said with a sigh, hunching her shoulders slightly. "Sounds about right." You would think after everything she had told him last night, he'd be a little more sensitive about what he said... |

"Got it. Kesha, and plenty of Kanye. Don't worry Kris, I know your taste in music well!" Mainly because it was fairly similar to his. Plenty of mainstream pop with a tiny dose of everything else, with a final sprinkle of alternative rock and good lyrics. "I'll tell everyone that you died harder, better, faster, stronger." Maybe if the driver didn't kill her, she would die of embarrassment? Though that wouldn't be good. Despite everything he was throwing at her this morning, Neil really didn't want her to die. He was about to say something more about how he would probably move on if she died, but then--
"Kris, you know that's not true."
Neil whirled around, eyes narrowed and gaze serious all of a sudden. The usual smile on his face was gone, and his mouth was set in a firm line. "You know I was just kidding, right?" They'd been joking and fooling around about how they were going to kill each other for a while, and she was taking that one thing the wrong way. It was definitely understandable, seeing what they'd talked about the last night, but-- okay, there were some things about Kris that he'd never understand. Then again, there were plenty that she would never get about himself.
"Don't take me too seriously."

Her eyes widened at the sudden change in his tone and expression, as he whirled around to face her with serious eyes. Oh right, he didn't like it when she was self-deprecating. But he was the one who called her that, so- she ducked her head down so he couldn't see her face, biting her lip to stop herself from laughing and wait a minute-
"... And you know I'm just kidding, right?" Kris glanced back up at him again, head cocked to one side as she grinned impishly. Woops, she got him good that time. It was about time, too. Ordinarily, she might have felt bad for tricking him like this, but he was being a jerk. She didn't feel all that bad for him. Besides, it was a small reminder that she could be just as evil sometimes, if she put her mind to it.
Yes, she had told him some pretty personal details about herself last night. But that didn't mean she wanted to be treated any differently. Doing so would have been insulting, and she would have gotten genuinely pissed at him if he had been censoring himself for her sake. She was shy, sure, but that didn't make her some fragile little flower.
She tugged his hand, smiling as she said, "Thank you, by the way. I expect the playlist at my funeral to be absolutely amazing. You better not disappoint, otherwise I'll come back as a ghost and haunt you." She totally meant it, too. She'd be one of those inconvenient ghosts who randomly crashed your computer or turned the hot water cold while you were in the shower. |

Neil felt his eyebrow twitch as Kris mentioned that she was just kidding. Oh. Oh. All the panic that had ensued from earlier dissipated, replaced by a mixture of relief, and... Was that mild annoyance? Probably. Not many things ticked him off the way being wrong did. He wasn't afraid to admit that he made mistakes, but boy, did he dislike making them. But he found himself smiling once again, even if only to act like he wasn't perturbed. There was no way that Kris would have missed that tiny slip though, small as it was.
"And you call me a jerk?" he asked. Okay, fine, that was just a small matter. Why was he getting so worked up over being wrong? "There, now we're even on the jerk thing. I'm a jerk, and you're a jerk. We can be jerks together. How does that sound?" Now the words had left his mouth, he felt considerably less irritated. With that, Neil started skipping along. It was just a small matter.
(Don't play with his heart, Kristen. You're the first person to have had it.)
"Besides, I hope you trust me to manage the playlist just fine. I'll make sure to blast Lily Allen at full volume when they recite your final rites. Along with Tik-Tok when they bury your casket into the ground!" They were almost there now, which meant that his excuse to hold her hand was nearly over. Wait. Excuse? Reason? Tease?
What was it when this felt so natural, unforced? Like he'd been waiting to do it for the longest time?
"Have you ever had bubble tea before?"

Was he mad at her? She caught that twitch in his eyebrow, and the space of time before he smiled again. Oh no, had she actually managed to piss him off? She had just wanted to push him back a little, that's all- she hadn't meant to make him mad at her. Her stomach churned as she bit her lip, this time out of worry. Should she ask? But what if he wasn't and she was just freaking out over nothing and then he really did get mad-
Her smile left her face as she replied, "But you're the bigger jerk." You know that scene from Lilo and Stitch, where Lilo showed Stitch a diagram of his bad levels? See, if they did that and compared their levels, his would be through the roof. Oh sure, he wasn't an alien engineered to cause chaos and destruction wherever he went, but Neil was still a much bigger jerk than she was. She did manage a small smile as she replied, "Sounds good to me. Birds of a feather and all, right?"
The saying really did hold some merit, though; at least on the surface, she and Neil certainly appeared similar. When you went deeper, though, they were obviously different. It was kind of interesting, really.
Take a deep breath, Kristen. She didn't say anything for a moment, then finally replied, smiling, "Perfect, and then I'll bust out of my casket during the chorus and reveal I was alive the whole time." Wouldn't that be a shocking turn of events? It'd be the perfect end to a funeral, and then they could all go party it up somewhere and it'd be fantastic. |

But he wasn't angry at her, far from it. Neil was just bad at being wrong at things, at being bad at things. It wasn't Kris' fault that she'd managed to show him up, and he wasn't about to blame her for it. And it wasn't as though he wouldn't acknowledge that she was right. Don't think he didn't see the smile on her face falter, though-- she'd noticed that he wasn't completely happy.
"Dude, it's fine," Neil said as he took a step closer to her. Oh dear, now she probably thought that he hated her, which was far from the truth. "I was just taken a little aback. I'm okay," he said, shooting her a smile. "It's totally fine." He was just a douche, that was all.
Sometimes he wondered whether he'd really left that kid in Australia behind, or if he still carried a part of that arrogant upstart with him wherever he went.
"Besides, if I was mad at you, I wouldn't be playing that kind of stuff at your funeral, would I?" Yes, steer the conversation back to something happy that they could both laugh about. "I'd end up playing Taylor Swift on loop, or something. Maybe copious amounts of One Direction too!"
