“I don’t know,” says Alice, swiping at her nose with a sniff. She looked small and insignificant, like a leaf blustering in a storm. “A lot of things. The diadem is magical.”She grabs the hem of her dress and looks down. Her feet are speckled with old dirt. “I don’t want either of them to get it, though. Especially . . . the angry one.”At the prospect of dying, she looks up at you with the eyes of a sad dog, as though she’s already given up. Perhaps she has. “But one of them will probably get it. And then what’s the point of me guarding something when it’s gone?”The shackled ghost throws his knuckles into the barrier once more, sending ripples over the surface of the white. You can feel the tremors through the soles of your feet. The man holding up the barrier grunts, and digs his heels into the soil. He’s looking a bit shaky. “Why does he want it? Because he is a fiend, and he will stop at nothing to keep me drowning in my own pool of misery!”Alice brings a small finger to her lips, and says, “Shh. It opens the pyxis.”She looks back at the two ghosts (and Kyu-Sik), and then back at you, the picture-perfect frame of terror. Her hair whips about, sent flying by a sudden gust of wind. “The shackled ghost is angry because the other, um, man is lying. You don’t want him to know you have the key.”As Johanna drags Donovan into the barrier of light, Alice gently frees herself from Donovan’s grasp and stands outside of the barrier. Something horrific is written all over her face, but she summons the courage to stand strong. “I can’t follow you in,” she whispers, shaking her head at Donovan. The line of her smile wobbles. Donovan wasn’t unlike an older brother to her, in the few minutes they’d been together. “But I can be brave.”And then, to the man and the ghost, she says, “Leave the tree alone! It won’t do you any good! I swear!” She sounds like she’s trying to command authority she doesn’t want. The sound coming from the shackled ghost was like an evil rasp, or a scorn-laced laugh, depending on how well he was heard. NO.By way of answer, he smashes through the barrier with a final, lethal throw of the hand. The fragments fly like shards of glass, and it sounds like breaking glass. The barrier is gone before the shards touch the ground. The man sinks to his knees, though if it were from a sudden energy loss or from defeat, it’s hard to tell. A guttural sound bubbles at his throat, but dies into a whimper. The shackled ghost descends to the ground and stands beside the tree, and then it’s like the fog veiling his body has cleared—he looks much more like a man than an abomination, but is still much more like an idea of a careworn man is holding his body together than something on a physical plane. “This . . . ah, yes. This feels much better.” He takes in a deep breath, and exhales as though it were his first breath in a century. It very well may have been. His voice still sounds distorted, but now it is suddenly understandable. His smile is thin and razor-sharp, and his words are dripping with vitriol. Suddenly, it’s clear that he’ll take any chance he gets to end the man on the ground’s life. “We meet again, Alowe. How are you doing? Why, I’m doing fine, thank you for asking.” He walks up to Alowe, and kneels in close. “What’s the matter? Cat got your tongue? Nothing to say?” When Alowe doesn’t answer, the ghost-man stands up and slams his foot down on his head, pressing it down into the dirt. The sound of the thud and cries were curiously muffled—that is to say, they weren’t there at all. “Understandable. Are you scared? But you had the nerve to lie to my face, did you? Heh.”
He turns his head to the trio, standing very unprotected by the barrier. “Oh. Hello. Are one of you bimbos going to unroot that bloody tree, or do I have to kill one of you first?”
“You will do no such thing!”
The ghost-man turns once again to find Alice standing rigid like a board of plankwood. “Those three have nothing to do with this! You will leave them alone!”
Cue derisive laughter.
“Oh, but little Alice,” he croons. “Don’t you know we can’t do it ourselves? Because of, y’know, you?” With a snap of the finger, barbed roots shoot up from the ground under Alice, ensnaring her. Her cries are interrupted by vines keeping her mouth closed.
“Anyway, I need one of you to go handle that tree.” He scratches his head. “And I swear I’m forgetting something . . . oh, that’s right. Which one of you has the fucking key?”
Unnoticed by the ghost-man, Alice's form begins to glow.

HOLD YOUR BREATH AND COUNT TO TEN Even with Kyu-Sik's call and Johanna pulling him along, Donovan was reluctant to go behind the barrier, when all he wanted was to be as far as possible from whatever was happening. Things he still couldn't understand, the lack of clear information and vague answers making him even more uncertain and unwilling. With Alice slipping from his arms, he almost protested, wanting to keep her close for whatever limited explanations she could offer. Despite her declared bravery, she hadn't seemed very hopeful in his ability to do anything, nor very helpful in providing any idea of what could even be done. Though childish in form and in behaviour, she couldn't possibly be, but he couldn't be sure if she was same as the others (not that he had any idea what was going on with them either) or... something else entirely. Somehow part of the tree she claimed to live in and was now trying to protect? But Donovan's doubts were violently interrupted by the shattering of the shield, instinctively grabbing Kyu-Sik in attempt to block the man from any of the flying shards. His posture was tense, braced for impact that didn't come. When he reopened his eyes, Donovan at least had the decency to look embarrassed, giving Kyu-Sik a half-frightened, half-apologetic smile before remembering to let go of his shoulders. "This is stupid," he whispered, trying to sound amused but mostly just irritated. "Goddamn fucking shit-headed ghosts. What the fuck is a diadem, anyway?" he expressed for only Kyu-Sik to hear, watching entirely unimpressed as the angrier of the spirits took a more human form. He felt little pity for Alowe on the ground, almost hopeful that the other would smash his head in so he wouldn't be tempted to do so himself. They wouldn't have even needed protecting if he hadn't dragged them into this in the first place, and it was difficult to feel anything but resentment when the ghost hadn't even redeemed himself with a properly sympathetic sob story. Just lies and dramatics. Still, the shackled ghost was clearly willing to take whatever violent actions necessary, the capture of Alice and his threat to kill one of them made it clear he wasn't to be trusted either. After seeing what he could do and having no idea what range of powers ghosts even possessed, Donovan decided he didn't want to be on the receiving end of finding out by attempting to free Alice without any means of doing so. Unfortunately and begrudgingly, Donovan had to admit that only Alowe seemed to have any useful ability of fending him off, though it was questionable how successful he'd even be after his powers already failed. Alice hadn't been the least bit specific, but maybe the magic of the diadem... He was going to regret this, but Donovan stepped closer to the ghost, willing to cooperate in the meantime. "You probably want this over as quickly as any of us," he indicated toward Kyu-Sik and Johanna with a wave of his hand, hoping to keep the ghost's attention away from the glowing girl. Whatever she was attempting, she was vulnerable to being stopped before she could succeed. All he could really do for her at this point was provide that opportunity. "I haven't seen any key, but I'll help you. With the tree," he offered solemnly, knowing very well he could be making a dangerous mistake. But if anyone had to do it, it'd best be him. He didn't dare look at Alice, not wanting to see her expression of betrayal. "Just tell me what to do." WORDS:599 TAGS:Event NOTES:

words | 390 | It was annoyance. That was the only way he knew how to explain the root of what he was feeling right now. Along with the mix of worry as he felt the tremors under his feet, Kyu-Sik was slightly irritated by the answers he was getting. Alright, so what was clearly a ghostly monster was a fiend. What a shocker. It seemed that all of his questions were ending in a lack of actual information. He had a vague idea of what was happening, but he had yet to determine who was even the actual villain of whatever was happening.
He frowned, only relieved when Johanna and Donovan entered the forcefield even if the little girl seemed insistent on staying out of it. It was just as well. The same forcefield that Kyu-Sik had hoped could protect them shattered above them. He winced and prepared for the worst, but only found Donovan’s hands around his shoulders when he opened his eyes. The man’s half-apologetic look was returned with one that was half-surprised and half-confused. “It’s like a tiara,” he returned before the more vicious spirit grabbed his attention.
That mix of fear and irritation had not left him. It wasn’t showing, but he sympathized with what he assumed Donovan was feeling, too. He wasn’t sure about the girl who found herself stuck in the mess with him, but they needed to get out of this alive. He wasn’t taking letting their lives be threatened lightly, especially when it was something he still had no clue about. Something that may have been lied about apparently. He bit his lip, grateful for the momentary time Donovan was buying for them.
While the cruel man was attacking the girl, Kyu-Sik took that as his last attempt to get some reason out of the man on the ground. He quickly stepped over and moved to help Alowe up. As he did, he leaned in close enough to whisper to him. “Here’s what’s going to happen. My friend there is going to go deal with that tree. You’re going to tell me the truth about what the diadem does and why you need it, or that guy gets to keep it. We’re not the Scooby Doo gang, we didn’t come here to help, and I really don’t care who gets this stupid thing.” |

The pyxis? What was a pyxis? The ghost thing was lying. Or someone was. Someone was lying and she wasn't supposed to give them the key that opened some mysterious pyxis.
Whatever was happening, she was going to cry. The barrier was supposed to protect them and it was shattered now. Everything was horrible. Of all the things Johanna wanted to deal with today, this was not one of them. None of this had been agreeable to her. She had no idea what to do. She wasn't supposed to give the key to the ghost-man-thing...whatever the fudge he was. She didn't want to die. There were too many things to think through and not enough time to think them through. She didn't like quick decisions any more than she did forced decisions. But for a decision to be both forced and quick? That was the worst thing she'd had to imagine.
Instead of responding verbally, Johanna did her best to look confused. Key? What key?
Someone could get killed though.
This wasn't fair at all. She'd never asked for this, never given any hint of a desire for this. Quietly, she looked between Donovan and Kyu-Sik. What were they supposed to do? What the fudge was going to happen? She wanted to ask, but they were busy doing...whatever it was they were doing and so she just glanced over at Alice quietly. What was she supposed to do? Why was Alice glowing? What was any of this?

“Oh, I like this one,” says the man with the shackles, rubbing his hands together with a vapid smile stretching his face wide. “It’s very easy, honeybunch,” he says, stepping closer to you and away from Alice, who has stopped glowing. “All you have to do is rip that tree from the ground. It won’t prove too difficult, I assure you. And after that, you and your little friends can go skipping away without a worry or care!” His tongue slithers between his teeth like a snake, with an evil glint in his eye that doesn’t say anything trustworthy. “Well? Go on!”Alowe groans under his breath, but makes a move to sit up while the man with the shackles is busy with Donovan. “The diadem brings a wandering soul back to life, as long as there is a purpose. I want to see somebody again. And while I am very sorry that I had to bring you into my own mess, you do not want that monster to come back to life.” He breathes out through his nose, eyes weary. “Yes. I am dead.”He gives you a look that is both self-deprecating and angry at the world—one hand slides down his face before clenching into a fist. “Hm. Well, he probably would have killed you all if he found you first. Your only shot at surviving now is through me, unfortunately.” He turns toward you. “So. Are we done here? We need that diadem.”As Alice’s glow faded, you begin to feel another presence taking shape inside your mind. Wispy tendrils grab hold of your thoughts, sending shudders through your bones and down your back. Hello. It's Alice. Don't be scared! The voice comes through shady and hard-of-hearing. You must concentrate to grasp onto every word. I don't think I have much longer. Once that tree is uprooted, I'll be gone. So I think I need to give you as much information as I can before I die.You have the key to the pyxis. The pyxis is what is containing the diadem, the artifact that can bring a dead soul back to life. Both of these men want it for their own sake, and have brought you three for their goals. The silence after the shackled man’s offer is deafening. If you value your life, I wouldn't aid the bad guy. Aphael will kill you.Urgency wells up inside you, but it feels foreign. Alice’s feelings seem to be dripping onto you. However, Alowe remains ignorant. Tiara is dead. He will realize this once if he is brought back to life, and it will be terrible. Please, if you have any more questions, bring them up quickly!“Ah,” says Aphael, noticing Alowe’s sitting form. “Decided to get up, have we?”Two vines shoot out from the ground and bolts straight for Kyu-Sik and Alowe, lethal and with pin-point accuracy, wind whistling behind them. Alowe jumps up, and his lights shine before they make contact with both of the vines. However, instead of impaling straight through, the vines are reflected, snapping with the sound of a cracked whip. He breaks out into a run straight at Aphael. With a grunt of approval, three more vines are sent straight at Alowe by Aphael, and quickly reflected by his shining hands. It would be the ideal time to act, with Alowe providing as a distraction.

HOLD YOUR BREATH AND COUNT TO TEN Being liked by the shackled man wasn't exactly flattering, but appearing cooperative seemed to work for the moment. "No problem, Sweetiecake," he grumbled quietly after turning away to examine the tree he volunteered to take care of, feeling far more reluctant than he appeared. Ripping it up probably wouldn't be impossible even for somebody as thin as himself, it didn't look too securely rooted. But it was the girl's home, and he wanted to avoid harming the tree as much as possible. Even if he was uncertain of her connection to the tree, they were clearly linked and it wasn't too big of a leap in logic that might just be what would kill her after everything she'd said. Not ready to resort to drastic measures quite yet, Donovan still hoped he'd only have to go along with this until another opportunity presented. Donovan lacked trust in the man's word to allow them to go free once this was over, but he also knew this wouldn't end until somebody had the diadem in their possession. He spared a regretful glance from Alice to Johanna, who seemed much too terrified to be much help at the moment. Not that he could blame the teenage girl, she hadn't wanted to get involved as much as any of them. Part of him hoped she'd take the chance to run away before anything got worse. Though if the key went missing and turned up nowhere to be found, there was no telling what rage the ghost would take out on them. This was all stupidly complicated. Kneeling down at the base of the tree, Donovan shrugged off his backpack and pushed up the sleeves of his coat. The roots were thin, and whatever it was guarding would be easy to get to if he just broke them. But not in too much of a hurry despite the ghost's clear impatience and hoping to protect the tree, Donovan began digging at the wet dirt with his bare hands to expose more of the roots, whispering an apology he was sure Alice couldn't hear anyway. While working for the florist, he had to transplant plenty of small trees and shrubs into larger pots, knowing they generally survived as long as most of the root system remained intact. That was the only thing he could really count on at the moment. Maybe if he went down deep enough… But the dirt was rather compact, and Donovan wished he had a spade to help break it up a bit. Remembering the dagger in his bag and deciding it was better than nothing, Donovan pulled it out and took a stab at the dirt with an annoyed huff, trying to clear away as much as he could while the two ghosts fought. words | 410 | Kyu-Sik listened to the reply he was given silently. The answer that he was given was finally clear and straight-forward, but that didn’t mean he didn’t find himself surprised. If what he was being told was true, then he could finally see the value in this. However, that didn’t mean he was any more certain about his own involvement in the mess. Or Donovan’s and Johanna’s for that matter. They were now risking their lives for people who had already lost theirs, all for an item that would give the deceased a second chance.
He nodded to Alowe. That was all he needed to hear. The man’s self-deprecated look was returned by one that lacked compassion for the situation even still. He could understand the situation without being emotionally invested in it. Knowing what he knew now just helped him decide on a course of action from that point forward. His eyes scanned again for Donovan who was now digging around a tree with the very dagger they had originally set out to pawn. He cringed, knowing that there was no way they were going to pawn it in whatever condition that would leave it in.
Before he set off to rejoin him, the young Korean man glanced back at Johanna. He hadn’t forgotten about her, as much as he didn’t know anything about her. However, they couldn't just leave her on her own. “Follow me,” he said to her simply before turning and making a short sprint to the tree. There was a real fight going on now. While that made the area more dangerous, it also kept the ghosts distracted enough for the living to regroup.
“The diadem brings people back to life,” Kyu-Sik said as soon as he reached Donovan’s side. No sense in asking if he needed help or how he was handling everything. He was being as direct as possible, because who knew how much time they actually had. His voice dropped to something only the other could hear. “If that’s true, I’m not sure we can let any of these people take it.” As cold as it seemed, people couldn’t just be brought back to life without real world consequences. He wasn’t going to play a part in that.
Glancing back to the ghosts who were fighting, he finally shut the umbrella he was holding. If they were caught in the crossfire, at least he had something of a makeshift weapon.

Johanna was still as she heard the voice in her head. She stared ahead of herself, trying not to bring too much suspicion from the rest of the people that they were with. She didn't want them to think something was off. After a moment, she just looked down at the ground, listening to what Alice's voice was saying. It was hard to concentrate through everything, but she forced herself to.
She looked at the two ghosts for a moment, trying to figure out what to do next. So what do we do with the diadem once we have it? Do we take it and run? Are they going to come after us? Can they actually do us any harm if we leave with it? Do we take it?
It felt like there were a million questions and practically no time to ask them or get them answered. She couldn't even formulate them all into words. She was a teenager, not even out of high school...and she was supposed to figure everything out. At least everything about this part of it. If she didn't have the answers, how could she relay any of the message to Donovan or Kyu-Sik?
How do we keep them from getting the diadem? And who is Tiara?
Kyu-Sik's words were not questioned when he said them and she followed quietly, glancing towards the ghosts for a moment. "I know," she said quietly, trying to keep her voice low enough that only the two next to her could hear. Very quietly, she whispered to Kyu-Sik, "I have what he asked about before." The key.

“Hello, friend!” You hear a light-hearted voice, coming with good tidings and merriment. A little humming bird pops into view, a shimmering canvas of all the colours of the rainbow. It speaks with the voice of a child, and, for some reason, you’re certain your companions can see this humming bird, too. It zips this way and that, as though it has so many places it should be. “I see you’re in a little predicament! Have no fear, for I have a gift—from me to you, O best friend!” A light shines from the little humming bird—a light not-so-garish, unlike Alowe’s light—you feel a little calmer, a little more like you can get out of this alive. The same light reaches out from the little bird, and forms a chain around your neck like a necklace. And then, once the light fades, you’re left with a simple chain of gold hanging around your neck—from it, an agate stone is hanging. “Anybody who wears that necklace will nullify the effects of any magical or spiritual manifestations once it comes in contact with the wearer, or the wearer comes into contact with it,” the bird cheeps, flitting its wings. “However, be careful—there’s only so much it can stand before it breaks!”Flying in a graceful circle, the little humming bird bids farewell with, “Good-bye, best friend!” before shooting up into the sky and disappearing like a firework without the bang. If there was a way to get away, I would tell you! But if you guys couldn’t get the diadem for them, then neither of the ghosts would want you guys. And the meaner one would have killed you!
You might be able to run if Alowe keeps on helping you, but . . . I think Alowe wants that diadem, too. I don’t feel very good about Alowe.
At this time, the bird appears, and bestows Kyu-Sik with the necklace that can protect him. Hmm. Well, he can leave!
But keep them from the diadem? The easiest way is to just leave! Um, I don’t think you want to do that, but the ghosts can’t touch that tree. You have to do everything for them. Weird ghost-y stuff—I don’t really know how it works.
Oh, Tiara? Uh, hmm. She was Alowe’s lover, I think. And Aphael’s wife.“What the bloody hell are you waiting for?” came Alowe’s yell from up ahead—he’s sounding impatient. “Hurry up and get the diadem, or so help me, I’ll sic this hound on you!”
Maniacal laughter rises into the silent air. It can only be Aphael. “Sic me onto them? What are you playing at?”
Tree roots shoot up from around Alowe’s feet, entangling and coiling around him like springs, until he’s suspended up in the air like Alice is, helpless. Aphael sneers at him. “Oh, so you can have shiny hands that can reflect, eh? Reflect that, you lily-livered whoreson.” He laughs. Spotting the trio in one place, he claps his hands together with a smile. “Ah, the gang’s all here. And you haven’t gotten that tree up yet? What a shame! Here I thought you might have all lived, but, well, I only need one of you.”
The earth cracks, and from it shoots a roots like a bullet from a gun, straight at Kyu-Sik. When it reaches, though, it stops mid-air before falling lifeless and dead to the ground. Aphael narrows his eyes. “What?” A vein pops on his forehead. “How”—one root shoots out at Kyu-Sik— “is”—and another— “that”—and another— “possible?”—and they all shrivel up and fall to the ground like their predecessor. Oops. He’s getting mad.

HOLD YOUR BREATH AND COUNT TO TEN Any cautious approach that Donovan had been attempting to make was clearly not going to work at this point, there was no more time to buy and no better options to take. The ghosts had turned impatient, and clearly Alowe was not longer going to be of any help if he even was in the first place. At least he had been a distraction to keep the angrier ghost's attention off of them, but now he was just as useless and trapped as poor Alice. As soon as Aphael attacked Kyu-Sik, Donovan's heart was seized by a cold dread, his fingers clenching tightly around the dagger. He didn't even have time to question why the roots were failing other than the vague connection to the bird, but any relief would be premature at this point. She's just a tree. He had convince himself of that. The roots had been exposed enough that a firm push would break it free from the ground. It should have been a more difficult choice to make, because Alice didn't deserve this and Donovan couldn't even pretend he didn't know exactly what would happen as he stood from the ground and wrapped his arms around the tree in almost a hug. The diadem was best left out of either of the men's hands, but he or Johanna could just as easily be next, and the only person he could bring himself to care about was Kyu-Sik. He wasn't about to let the other die because he had a soft spot for nature. A loud crack and he brought the small tree to the ground. But regret wasn't an option, quickly retrieving what had been protected by the roots. WORDS:### TAGS:Event NOTES:BYE BYE ALICE ;u; ILU BB

words | 420 | Kyu-Sik had been focusing on what was important in the moment. He took in Johanna’s words carefully, not sure if it was actually a good thing that they had the key. It was possible to use that to their advantage, but they were just as likely to be killed off for possession of what they had. As he weighed the pros and cons in his head, the unexpected happened. No, really, just when he thought the scenario couldn’t get any more bizarre a flash of weirdness passed by in full force.
His lips pressed together, and he stared at the bird that flew by as it professed their deep friendship. What exactly just happened? He had no idea. He didn’t remember becoming a disney princess, but now it seemed that was the case. “What—“ Kyu-Sik started under his breath, but his attention was drawn to Alowe and Aphael.
When the first root shot up, the male clenched his eyes shut. He was certain that was going to be it for him. He was dead then and there, and just because he wanted to walk through the park instead of take the bus. He cursed what a shitty way to die that would have been. And then a moment passed. He wasn’t dead. The roots were falling before they hit him. He held his breath, praising his luck at that moment for being a disney princess. Whether or not he really understood that strange bird, the necklace he was helping was affective.
The question was how affective. Kyu-Sik saw an opportunity to act, even if it was not the best decision to make in that moment. Other than the dagger Donovan was digging through the dirt with, they had no weapons and no other form of defense. He was safe for now. The others weren’t so much. He hated doing nothing if there was something he could do. However, he did swallow and give the slightest hesitation as he recognized this as perhaps not his best move.
Despite the better instincts of a boy who was certainly not good at contact-based sports, he made a lunge for Aphael. If the necklace could nullify the effects of a magical or spiritual manifestation, then he was going to make contact with the ghost himself. After all, what was a ghost, but a spiritual manifestation? Plus, Alowe had given them an opening to do something. If any of this played out like he hoped, then he just gave Alowe a chance as well. |
