Living Situation Being a cop in LA, it’s only natural for Kyoko to be a part of the LAPD. Sure, it’s not quite known for it’s upstanding record, but it’s the police force and she’s rather proud to say she’s got nothing to do with all those gambling rumours about the officers in the station. She is also rather proud of her rank. Although she’d be called a rookie for all intents and purposes, it’s only because of her age. She’s had this job for a good six years, and isn’t intending to get a career change anytime soon, so she hopes that her elders would be so kind as to put that nickname behind them. Due to the fact that she skipped her college education for police training, she is taking courses in UCLA - but only classes that don’t interfere with her job (meaning that she misses a good amount of class for her job). She lives in a small apartment not too three miles north from the station. It’s nice and cozy for the female, and not to mention a complete mess. Kyoko has never been the neatest person, so six years of papers and pens have somehow managed to clutter up the space. Even worse now that she’s attending school - various textbooks lying about in random open pages can be found on the coffee table or the tiny desk in her bedroom. She’s forgone making her bed in the morning because, let’s face it, no one’s going to see it. The only time Kyo had attempted to clean was when she found that even she couldn’t navigate through her apartment, some three years ago. And still she managed to miss papers that just lied there. It also explains why she has an inexplicable amount of paperwork and how she somehow managed to lose what she’s assigned instantly. There is a fair amount of stuff on her walls, mostly katanas and fans on display. She cleans the shelves that they’re on once in awhile - too much dirt up there makes her cough. She’s rather proud of her collection, and it contrasts the big mess beneath it all. Plus, if she ever does get in a brawl with someone inside her home (or if someone sneak attacked her), she’d be able to defend herself pretty well with a sword close at hand, and it’s doubtful they’d be able to navigate her mess of an apartment as well as she could. When guests do come over (it’s been years since that’s happened, by the way), she goes the extra miles and speed cleans her apartment to be somewhat presentable. The books are stacked in a somewhat disheveled pile at the foot of her bed, and her papers hidden in the back of her closet (and if that doesn’t fit, they’re thrown out, no matter how important they may be). The walls, finally seeing the light of day for who knows how long, are a light beige colour. The maple coffee table finally gets cleared up from all the various papers and can actually be used for coffee and to prop one’s legs up on, like it’s supposed to be used. And her bed’s made, for once. That counts as something too. 02. Appearance Kyoko would like to say that she dressed in the finest clothes. But with her below-average salary, that was practically impossible. Plus, she was required to wear a uniform for work, so that puts quite a damper into her usual attire. She likes dressing to impress - after all, she has assets and it would be such a waste to not use them. She prefers undercover missions to anything else her job throws at her, so dressing up is no big feat for her. As long as there’s someplace for her to carry a weapon (of any sort, really, though she’s most skilled with swords). Speaking of her weapons, she takes pride in them, despite not being skilled in most of them. She likes keeping at least some sort of protection on her, something that could she could use to get out of a sticky situation. Despite the fact that she’s not the most prepared person in the universe, if she remembers anything, it’s always going to be some sort of weapon, be it a gun or a sword. She might make a half-assed attempt to conceal it, but most of the time Kyo doesn’t bother. Actually she’s quite known around for being paranoid (in which she really isn’t that much), because of her choice to bring weaponry with her. So in a sense, she does take her job with her wherever she goes. She’s that dedicated. Every year or so she cuts her hair - she’s determined to keep it short because of how troublesome it was to deal with long hair when she was a kid. Plus, it would take forever to grow out anyways, so why bother? It wasn’t like she preferred long hair over short, so there really was no point. Plus, long hair would inconvenience her - it always blew in her face and interfere when the time most certainly did not call for it. Long, black locks in her face wasn’t something she wanted to see every single day at every waking moment. She likes it the way it always is - short, but not too short. It didn’t hinder her in any way, and that was the most important part. 03. Personality The whole reason that Kyoko became a police officer is due to her strong sense of justice. She hates seeing people wronged and will do anything in her power to fix a wrong, even if she has nothing to do with the situation. Kyoko hates the fact that there is so much suffering around her, and when people just chose the ignore it, it annoys her to no end. So she makes a point of helping out anyone and everyone, so long as it is righteous (not even that it's inside the law, because righteousness triumphs over law sometimes, in her mind). But she hates to see people suffer, especially when she could do something about it. Ignorance is not bliss. She likes to know things. But with that, she is very protective of her friends and family. Kyoko doesn't go a very long way in being able to protect them, but it's always the thought that counts, right? Most of her friends are from the police academy, so they're well apt to take care of themselves, but she is rather protective and would absolutely hate seeing anyone she knows (or anyone in general) being hurt. It also goes along with her loyalty towards people that she supports or likes. But she's never good at this, as she usually fails and makes the situation even worse. She rather abuses her powers as a police officer to ensure protection of her loved ones. And along the way, she starts getting more obsessive than she should for her own good. Perhaps Kyoko is a bit more carefree than most cops are. She likes having fun and she likes sharing the fun, too. She's not usually the most bubbly person around, but there are times where Kyo will tell people (like Kei) to loosen up and relax. Because stress is bound to get people in trouble. It would make people lose focus and that is never good. A good balance between work and fun is important to her, and she opts to spread around this wisdom to everyone in the police force, subordinate and higher ranking officials alike, no matter how unwelcome it is. Of course, it's led her to get in a bit of trouble sometimes, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with an apology and extra shifts. The carefree little bugger she is, it's only natural that she'd be impulsive too. Kyo doesn't think things through - she'd much rather go into something head-on and not think about the consequences until she had to face them. It has landed the officer in a lot of consequences, actually, but she still never learned. After all, what were partners for if not to get the other out of trouble? And well, Kei is definitely a lot more responsible than Kyo. The only downside to this is that it's messed up quite a few missions and stakeouts, because she'd want to go out there and immediately serve justice to those who broke simple laws and social understandings. But a problem arises with her impulsiveness - she's rather impractical too. Sure, she can tell when things will probably go wrong, but when it's her turn to draw up a plan of action - it's probably easier to summon magic and expel all the criminals from this world than try to go along with that she'd plan. Half the time, she leaves her partner in charge of that. In fact, Kyo leaves her partner in charge most of the time anyways. She's not the most responsible person on the planet, but she does understand the importance of being responsible. But her plans of action (which highlight her impracticability) usually involve lots of grandiose secret agent moves instead of the more practical police tactics. Once her plan had been 'remove criminals from warehouse by using fairy magic to banish them'. It didn't work out so well. Though, she has always been a rather optimistic person, because looking at the bright side of things is only excepted, right? It's not as though Kyoko doesn't think about the negative things, or what could happen to her in her job, but she decides to ignore all that, and she loves doing what she does (even though she isn't doing the best job at it). Having a pessimistic attitude never helped anyone, plus, where was the hope in that? Hope sprung forth ideas, and ideas meant that they could get out of a potentially dangerous and life-threatening situation. Being an optimist had it's good sides, although people tend to view her as a bit childish with her mindset that everything has a silver lining. Although she does have the law in mind, most times Kyoko is a bit rebellious as she usually doesn’t care about the law, more like doing the right thing. And if it comes with doing something outside of the law, well, so be it. She is, however, loyal to her friends and co-workers, and she can’t bear to hide anything from them for very long. But if she fiercely disagrees with them, she will go out of her way to piss them off. And then profusely apologizes for it when she realizes she is somewhat wrong, which is a hard thing for her to admit. Even if she hates to admit it, she’s quite a prideful person. She likes to boast about her abilities (but even she knows that too much is too much), and takes pride in her work. She hates losing and not meeting expectations, especially her own. She holds high standards for herself, because being the best means better for everyone, right? Her heart’s in the right place, at least. She holds a lot of sympathy towards other, especially those who are suffering. She can’t stand the world and all it’s unfairness. A few trips to therapy sessions have diagnosed her to having low latent inhibition. While she does wander off on topics and holds a general distracted presence (no wonder she can’t drive ten minutes without getting lost), she does channel it to have heightened awareness of her surroundings. Which makes her notice suffering much more often than a normal person. 04. History Kyoko doesn’t talk much about her childhood years. It’s not like she doesn’t remember them - she wasn’t that old and still has much of her life ahead of her. She just prefers not talking about it. Nothing particularly bad happened - if anything, fortune blessed her that time. It’s just the matter of interest - her history just wasn’t interesting. Not like some of the other people on the force. In fact, she joined the force just to experience something different from a perfect life. That, and her father had always said that she had much potential to upholding the law. He was right, of course, since she loves her job and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world (except maybe for something a little more higher paying, but honestly who didn’t wish that with the current economy?). Her beginning starts with a letter. In the countryside of Japan, two lovers had been separated, vowing to exchange letters to each other. On the eve of their departures, the two had made love and conceived the child that would be known as Kyoko. The truth was that the two of them were not ready for a baby. Although each loved the other dearly, they had always planned on marriage before children. But that night both of them gave into their weakness. The thought of being apart hurt them both. Contrary to the circumstances in which she was born in, when Kyoko came along, the both of them were overjoyed. And they were determined for her to live a comfortable and peaceful life under their care. They, for the most part, succeeded, but the only problem was that Kyoko didn’t want as peaceful of a life as she led. It was too peaceful - where was all the fun? One day Kyoko sat down and decided to read the letters the two had exchanged. Both had kept the letter and their feeble attempt at hiding it was locking it up in the attic and stuffing it to the bottom of an old trunk. She picked the lock - a skill she acquired after being left to her devices each and everyday, surrounded by a plethora of locked doors around the house. Her childhood consisted of learning to slowly pick locks and explore various rooms after school. The letters had been an interesting find. The ever elusive attic was an object of curiosity for the little girl - but the door was a great deal more difficult to pick due to how old it was, and how inexperienced she was as a young girl. And then, even when she found the letters and calculated the time stamp on each one (and felt her curiosity grow by the second), Kyoko thought about their privacy. Obviously, they had gone through such lengths to hide it (but really, it was rather easy to find), so she should respect that, right? But then again, curiosity killed the cat. ”I remember the time we first met. You hated me...” A one Takeda Kimiko had always been the center of attention. New clothes and new toys every week, one would expect her to be a spoiled child. Only, she wasn’t. Everyday since she was a child, she learned to defend herself in garrulous training. Everyday she spent on enduring tests that her father had made to ensure that she knew how to defend herself when the time came. He always reminded her that the world was dangerous and that she was much too innocent to be contaminated by it. That his enemies would find her and take her away from him. And he wasn’t too far off from the truth, because it did happen. Even a million hired guards couldn’t prevent that from happening. Maybe it was because the victim was all too willing to get captured. Through her secluded life she had always watched the neighbour boy, a one Shiomi Hideki. He wasn’t rich, and he wasn’t poor. He was just average. He lived on the Takeda’s property, but the two never crossed paths even once. Not until they were twenty and the boy took it upon himself to kidnap her. To him, she represented everything he hated - the rich and the privileged. To her, he represented a life she’s never known, that she was interested in. Kimiko wanted to know what was going on in a commoner’s mind. She even vowed not to use any of her self-defense training on him unless she needed to - she didn’t think he’d ever harm her. Turns out he did hate her, the least she could gather from how they first met. The burning hate in his eyes was enough to hint her of that. She hadn’t done anything wrong, not that she knew of. She had always looked up to him, in a sense. Living a life that seemed so hard but still surviving it. But she didn’t particularly want to be held for ransom money either. So she tried to get to know him. During her imprisonment, she tried talking to him, trying to figure out just why and what was going on in that head of his. All in the meantime he was reconsidering. Hideki had thought she would be a spoiled rich brat, but she was perfectly mannered. His initial feelings of hate dissolved quickly. He got to know her, and he felt guilty. When she was released back to her family, she did the only thing she really could do to free someone of the blame. She lied and said that she was the one who ran away, despite not being able to come up with a valid reason why. Kimiko’s parents weren’t convinced of this, since the Shiomi family had been kicked out of their property not so long ago. But they shut Kimiko to stay in the house, withdrew her from school and homeschooled her for the remained of her high school years. It was only until college that they met again. Time apart had them thinking, and Kimiko in that time had fallen head over heels for him - a guy she only spent time with during her partial ‘kidnapping’ if one would call it that. It was the same for him too. But the problem was, after their brief relationship in college, Hideki had to leave for America. They eloped and he was off, promising her that he’ll come back to get her. During this time they exchanged letters, and Kimiko was pregnant with Kyoko. Hideki made it in time to see her birth, and when Kyoko was safely born, he knelt down and asked Kimiko to marry him. To come with him to America. He had already gotten a job and a steady flow of money, as well as a house. The only thing missing was Kimiko and Kyoko. There was a fickle thing called the Takeda family, but they attempted to quickly resolve that, and when that failed they just... fled. And that was the end of the letters. From what Kyoko knew, she didn’t have any contact with her mother’s family, and not so much her father’s side either. Her parents were the ones who doted on her, seeing as she was the only child. Life was peaceful and from all she knew, she had never really had anything to complain about, and there were no scary figures from the Takeda family. If anything, they had only lost contact, and nothing more than that. Lots of families lost contact with their parents, right? It was a normal thing, even in America. But it wasn’t that Kyoko was bored with her life - far from it. Whenever her mother was home, she would teach the young girl how to wield a sword and fight for herself in case things were to go awry, like she was taught herself, alongside her Japanese and English lessons. She never did use these skills on herself, but she always used them when she found things being handled unfairly. No, Kyoko didn’t chop anyone in half with a sword or anything (though she had always been sorely tempted to, even if it went against her very morals). She just always fought for what was right. From preschool bullies to high school menaces, she always used her skills to protect the weaker ones. Because she couldn’t handle seeing others suffer. She was aptly aware of all the suffering around her, and she absolutely hated it. The first signs of her low latent inhibition showing. It was one day that she decided to become a police officer. She had played around with the idea before, and her Dad was in law, so it worked out. But she only really had thoughts about it, and didn’t really think about it thoroughly. It wasn’t until she witnessed a crime that she decided it. She didn’t want to be able to do nothing about it - she didn’t just want to stand there and report it to the police. She wanted to take an active role in it. At that time, she started to apply for early admission into police academy. She was dead set on this job, and the station knew it. She skipped college to enroll in the police academy. The officials had seen her talent with a sword and recognized her potential. They trained her from the moment she had gotten out of high school, and aimed for putting her on the force at an early age. She trained hard - she wanted to get out there and fight crime as soon as she possibly could. She couldn’t stand sitting by. She had the potential - she just had to unlock it. She traded her katana that she had so dearly fought with before for a standard police gun. It wasn’t to say she never practiced it, but she was just so dedicated on getting her job that she thought of little else. College could be taken later, but this job could not wait. Kyoko might have bent the laws a couple of times, but they were for good reasons. She may have broken protocol in exchange for giving immediate relief to the victim instead of waiting like she was supposed to. Her feelings often got in the way of her training. But at the age of twenty, she finally made it into the force. And she did get unendingly teased for her age and inexperience at first. The station stuck her with a partner, and it hasn’t changed since then. Kyoko’s overwhelming sense of loyalty would have kept her by her partner’s side either way. Plus, she absolutely relied on her partner, Kei, to drive her places. Because the only directions she really knew was to the station from her house, and the way back. She’s improved since then (she can go to UCLA from her house and the station! A miracle!), but she still relies on Kei for directions. Besides, they could often speak in their native tongue together. Though Kyoko was both fluent in English and Japanese, she liked to talk to other in Japanese so that she could They’ve been the epitome of buddy cops ever since. Especially for the odd occurrences that were recently popping around LA. The two of them were assigned the first case at the Wright Law Offices, and as such as received all cases relating to it. It was almost like a written rule that they were to handle cases such as these. She enjoys the investigative work that comes with it - she can pretend to be a bit more knowledgeable than she really is. But thus far, no leads. |
