Well, he guessed one could call it that - if one meant ulterior in the sense of paying for protection…though he was pretty damn sure that wasn't what everyone was thinking. Show up every few days to chat it up with the fairly pretty young lady who worked there, occasionally bringing her fresh doughnuts or cookies from Java Café? Obviously, he was trying to woo her. Obviously. He had to roll with the cover story - if they realized she was being protected, the Italians were going to start becoming more ballsy - and so long as they didn't realize he was in with the Kravec family, and he kept up the act, everything would be able to continue smoothly.
It was just before noon when he headed to that particular restaurant today, a confidence in his step and a smirk on his face as he crossed the street nimbly, giving a cheeky wink to a middle-aged woman who was staring, a typical reaction to him in public. His ego told him people stared because he looked damn good - but his logic said it was due to the fact he looked like he couldn't figure out if he was going to a business meeting or a heavy metal concert. He liked the former option a whole lot better. He didn't even see the woman's reaction as he hopped up the steps and into the door of his destination, and when asked if he preferred a booth or not by the hostess, simply asked of the whereabouts of miss Ana. He lucked out, he came to find from the very talkative hostess - she'd just gotten out of classes, and still had several hours before she had a shift. Plenty of time to talk someone into taking it for her.
He was told to wait while someone went to get her, so he took a seat on one of the benches near the door, sliding the sunglasses off his face - not for any actual ability to see better or anything, his body had adjusted to the constant dim lighting while he wore them. Eye contact, though, was a powerful thing, and if he had to put on a show of contrived sincerity for this particular woman, he was going to need it. It typically worked with all the others, anyway. As soon as he caught sight of the dark hair and disapproving look of the female in question, he plastered on his best smirk, giving her a small wave.
"So I have an incredibly important question." he stated as soon as Ana got close, stressing the 'incredibly' perhaps a bit more than he needed to. He waited a few moments, making sure he had her full - or at least most - of her attention. "Do you have any nice dresses you haven't had the chance to wear in a while?"

Why did she do this to herself? Ana trudged up the stairs to her apartment above the restaurant. She was exhausted from her class that had let out earlier that morning. Just one more semester, that's what she kept telling herself. One more semester. She could make it, she could make it. But these late night/early morning/ and online classes for her degree in travel and business? Sometimes she wondered how she functioned properly.
It had been two months since the 'incident' as she deemed it.
She'd over heard some men talking about rubbing about a man who frequented her parent's restaurant all the time. She didn't know his name, but her grandparents paid him protection money - that much she knew. All of his meals here were free, with his friends getting half off. Long story short, the men she'd over heard had said they were going to rub him out, Italian men in slick suits with soft accents and cold eyes. Ana had tipped off their favorite patron, whom she dubbed Mr. Smith ages ago, and two months later he was still living. Unfortunately, Ana was put in somewhat of a bind. She'd helped a man stay alive, but the Italian mob hadn't seen her act as something generous - more like highly inconvenient. So now Ana was on their sh*t list and in the good graces of the mob boss she'd helped. Now she had a red head coming to 'see' her... one that she wasn't too keen on having around.
His name was Lukas... something. Ana didn't know what it was and frankly she never asked. He was Mr. Smith's lackey, or so she assumed, and for the past month he'd been visiting the restaurant. She hadn't noticed at first until she'd seen that shock of red hair three times in ten days, and that was just inside the restaurant, that didn't include when she'd seen him out and about. A little on the paranoid side, Ana had waited and bided her time somewhat impatiently until she could fish out of him just why exactly he was hanging around. Babysitting he called it. Psht.
Ana dropped her bag carelessly on her bed and stripped out of her clothes and stepped into the shower. The freezing cold water that came out of the taps made her jump and her mind immediately went from tired to alert in .8 seconds flat before she could turn the knob to get the right temperature. The black haired girl let out a hiss before she got the right temperature and started scrubbing. Mentally she went over the different chores she needed to do before her shift started that night and the papers that needed to be written when there was a loud knock on her bedroom door.
"I'm in the shower!"
"There's a man downstairs to see you, hurry up and get pretty!" was the muffled response she got. The list of men who would visit her at work was exponentially short, which made Ana groan as she turned off the tap. The suds ran down the drain and she carefully stepped out of the shower and started drying off. Admittedly she took her time, drying her hair off with a seperate towel before plaiting it into a braid. The ends were still damp, but it was good enough. The waitress pulled on a pair of clean clothes that involved a baggy hoodie and a skirt - definitely not street material. If her guess was right though, the man downstairs wouldn't care. And if he did, tough nookies.
Ana made her way down the back stairs and avoided a tray of a lunch special before swinging her way out to the front. The dark haired girl narrowed her eyes on Lukas once she saw the telltale hair and lifted an eyebrow as she approached. The pajama pants had garfield sprawled out across them and the house shoes were nondescript as she finally stood in front of him. The moment she opened her mouth he declared he had a question. She shut her mouth and lifted the other eyebrow, obviously waiting for him to continue. Do you have any nice dresses you haven't had the chance to wear in a while?
That was... odd.
"I've got several dresses, most of them from my sorority days. Why?" The answer came out before she even thought about it as she folded her arms neatly across her chest. She looked like a walking train wreck from a last minute pajama party, but she didn't particularly care. The "babysitter" she didn't want around, however, was carefully watched.

The normal woman who would be sent on his job was four states away handling another matter, so he was called upon to make a special visit to a man who'd agreed to pay off his brother's rather terrifying debt (as well as having mentioned wishing to discuss further payments for his brothers 'protection'). Hilariously enough, said brother of the lowlife that owed them was not only wealthy, but supposedly pretty famous - something about starring in a few movies, or…whatever. Lukas didn't care.
What he did care about was the fact the man had sent out an invitation to one of their agents, and one guest of their choosing, to a small party he was having, to come and discuss their future business plans, as well as collect the money they were promised. And no matter what, Lukas always took a date to these events - they made good distraction, props, and generally made him appear more normal. "Because I have an invitation to a very important party, and I figured I'd pressure you to come be my lovely company." '…Plus, Rayna was busy, and I'm getting sick of calling her 'dear' anytime we go to do anything anyway…and if she shoots anyone at this particular event it really will be on the news, so that leaves me with you.' The entire time this line of thought passed through his mind, his expression didn't even twitch from his self-confident smile.
"You look like you could use the day off anyway, always working or off for classes - for shame, a girl your age needs some fun." Now that really was a true enough statement - every time he saw this girl, work work work, classes work, more classes…it made him tired just watching it happen. And that was saying something. He wasn't trying to be…nice, per se, but he did figure the girl needed a break, and he had the perfect opportunity to present her with one. It was just convenient that she happened to be a good cover date to take because if, by some accident, she did realize why they were really there, there wouldn't be the initial shock of 'Oh my god you're part of the mafia?!' Yeah, that aspect was already covered for Ana. Saved a whole lot of grief.

Ana wasn't entirely sure just what this man had up his sleeve, but she didn't trust it. Nope, not one bit. Why? Because this man came into this establishment a lot to come 'see' her, and was a troll. Not in manners per say, but every comment he combatted, every witty remark she made, he smooshed down and leveled the playing field. She couldn't get ahead and it drove her crazy! But, she had to be nice. He was looking out for her, making sure her feet and cement didn't mix together.
That thought alone made her a little more inclined to listen to what he had to say. The offer to the party drew a bit of surprise out of her and Ana paused for a moment and merely watched him. "I think you're full of it when you say 'be my lovely company', but it's a nice touch." Ana motioned for him to scoot over and she turned and sat down herself. The small of her back popped just as Lukas mentioned that she looked tired. Ana gave him a sidelong glance but said nothing for a moment as she thought it over.
The way he'd worded it just so happened to be the correct phrasing needed to make her seriously consider it. She was tired, and she honestly didn't go out all that often... what could one night hurt? It was a party, right? Sure it was with Lukas, but there would be other people there... Networking! That's it! That's what she could call it! Pleased with this idea, she nodded her head. "I'll get someone to cover me then and I'll wear a pretty dress." Lukas wasn't all that bad, or at least she could hope. She didn't know him that well just yet, but so far their exchanges had been nothing short of heated or interesting.
Maybe getting out would do her some good. She could rest and sleep the rest of the day, get ready, have fun, be home in bed, and then get up the next day for a lunch shift and late class. "Details on this party of yours. Location, transportation, attire dress code...?"

Of course he was. At least she gave some form of acknowledgement to his flattery, however. Consolation prize for him, congratulations. "I do try." he stated in responce, holding a hand dramatically to his chest as if he was genuinely flattered by the comment. What he loved about this whole exchange was that if anyone unaware of the situation was eavesdropping, Lukas sounded genuinely polite in everything he said - leaving Ana to look mildly deranged and having anger management issues. He slid over on the bench to allowed her the room she'd silently requested, stretching his legs out in front of him lazily as he settled into his new potion.
He kept his eye on her as she seemed to debate to herself, and he was mildly surprised when she actually agreed to go so quickly. His eyebrows rose slightly to reflect this. "Wow I had a speech prepared and everything. Bribes, too. More or less. What do you know, you're just full of surprises." he responded, the minor shock evident in his tone. He sat back up from his lazy position, reaching into the inside pocket of his blazer and pulling out the invite and his phone, funnily enough just as she asked details about where they were going. He ignored the phone for the moment and opened the invite, his eyes automatically ignoring the self-important speech at the top about the guy who was holding it, focusing on the exact time.
"Well, it's semi-formal, and you have about four…maybe five hours to get ready for it, but the earlier the better, since it's a little bit of a drive. It's some banquet for someone getting married, I think…had an old friend who got me an invite, said I deserved an easy day" 'Which actually translates into 'here's an easy job for you, have fun'…' That was, sadly, the accurate truth. They had to keep him occupied between contracts after all, or he'd get bored. That and yeah - their actual negotiator was off somewhere else, which defaulted it back to him. "I'll call a car whenever we're ready to go, so, if you want me to bail until you're done, you can call me when you're ready" he held up the phone to make a point, waving it at her a bit. His lips were twitching as if he was fighting down a larger smirk - which was exactly what he was doing. Oh, this was going to be decidedly amusing. He was only very slightly disappointed he couldn't play the 'who has the better date game' with Rayna this time.
"Well, actually, do you even have my phone number?" This was actually a genuine question - he may have given it to her before as a 'in case of emergency' situation, but he wasn't sure. He had a ridiculously amount of useless numbers on his 'normal' phone, and he knew he had hers in there somewhere (mind you, very likely not voluntarily given), but fishing it out and calling it randomly like a creepy stalker didn't exactly appeal to him.

[style=padding-top: 265px; color: #ffffff; font-family: arial; font-size: 10px; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 1px;]WORDS: Idk TAG: LuKas the Babysitter [/style] Ana folded her legs under her on the over sized padded bench and got comfortable. She'd have to get up in a minute if she was going to actually rest and get ready, but a quick breather off her feet wasn't so bad. The mocking way he held his hand over his chest brought a slight twitch to her lips as she looked at him. She was in one of her rare good moods - rare around him at least. Lukas just knew how to get under her skin, and he was a physical reminder that she was in trouble, she was being watched by people. After two months, she still wasn't used to it... Or having some guy pretending to chase her. That one was a new one too. Oh life... how funny you were. "Bribes?" Ana perked a little at that thought and gave him a sly look. "I'm always open to bribery, as long as it's good and not illegal. If you want to ply me with those, you are more than welcome to." She sat up straighter in an effort to pop more kinks out of her back as he pulled out the invitation. He flipped it open and she caught the fancy header, but not much else as he folded it back and looked for the time in question. Four or five hours? Her mind switched gears from curious to planning as she touched her still damp hair. She and the hair dryer were about to become fast friends it seemed. Ana stood up and stretched even more as he checked his phone and asked if she had his number. "You took my phone after I called you out on trying to 'woo' me and put it in there," she reminded him dryly. "I'll call you when I'm ready. But if you hang around, the only thing you're going to see is me wiggling into a dress, which you're not allowed to see, so now would be the time to scram." Her tone was a bit playful and Ana reached over and slid his glasses down so they bounced off the bridge of his nose. Ana pulled out her phone and scrolled through the contacts until she found Lukas's number. She hit the button and waited for a moment until the phone in his hand started ringing. She didn't see that her contact information was already there saved under her name though. "And now you have mine. I'll be ready as early as I can. Try not to be late, okay Lukas?" Out of the corner of her eye she could see her sister discreetly eyeing them from the hostess stand, pretending to write in her notebook and not be hanging on their every word. Ana shook her head lightly and put her phone back in her pajama pocket before waving at him in goodbye. Now, to prep for battle. Four hours later, Ana was done. She'd dried her hair and rolled all of her hair in soft rollers before taking a three hour nap. When her phone went off she sleepily put on some coffee in her little coffee maker before actually getting ready. Four hours to get ready? Please. She'd gotten ready for prom in thirty minutes. Of course, her hair had been a shorter then too. Ana flipped through her closet until she found the dress she was looking for and pulled out a pretty coral dress with nude heels and a clutch that matched left over from graduation. She sat at her work desk and cleared her homework and pulled out the make up and mirror and got to work. Some sweeps of color across her cheeks, eye make up, and soft lipstick and she was done. The rollers? That took time. For that she traveled to the bathroom and pulled out pins and tossed them into the bucket she kept them in, the rollers dropping out to produce soft curls. Half a bottle of hair spray later and some bobby pins and she had a cute half up, half down hair do. Halfway through the rollers she called Lukas and told him she was nearly ready if he wanted to go ahead and head over. She wasn't sure what car they'd be taking, probably a taxi, and she vaguely wondered what he'd be wearing. His style was mixed depending on his mood, but she knew one thing; at least her clothes wouldn't clash with his hair. A grin broke across her face at that. Ana dabbed on some perfume behind her ear and then at her wrists. Precisely five minutes after four hours, she was ready. She headed down the back stairs, the early evening staff preparing for the dinner rush as people got off work and headed off for a night out. She carefully made her way across the old wood floors and to the front, unsure if he'd actually be there or if she would be waiting a little while.

ROLL WITH IT! His date spent the several hours before the party preparing to look nice. For Lukas, it was a bit different - his time was spent making phone calls to his uncle and the family head that was interested in exploiting this particular person he was going to meet, as well as arming himself as much as he dared. Which, it wasn't a lot, mind you…a derringer strapped to his ankle just barely covered by his pants, and a switchblade on the inside pocket of his blazer, carefully settled beneath his phone and invite. He made sure to leave Rayna a message for when she got home (mostly consisting of his politely mocking her because she missed a party), and even went through the effort to switching to a fresh shirt and combing his hair before he Ana called him.
He sent in for a car - he'd debated requesting a limo, just for her reaction, but he knew he already pushed his luck with how often he used the vehicles provided for him for his 'work'. He's have to settle for one of the normal ones - which, admittedly, were still nice and would allow them to blend in well enough with the rich asses that were there. He grabbed himself a cup of coffee before he left, leaving the part-timer they had on his own - which seemed to leave the kid in a panic as he watched his only back up bail out the front door and disappear into the backseat a sleek black SUV.
Driving down a few blocks didn't take any time at all, and as soon as they got there, he had the driver pull directly up to the entrance, leaving just enough room for people to filter into the entrance. The car hadn't even stopped moving entirely when Lukas popped the door open and jumped out, a pointedly annoyed sound coming from the driver as he did it. Lukas ignored him, tilting his head down to see over the rim of his sunglasses, scanning his eyes over the immediate area. He barely looked different than when he'd come here earlier - save for perhaps the fact he'd swapped to darker sunglasses, a white shirt, and his hair seemed a bit tamer…even if it was still very much red. He hadn't even had the decency to remove his piercings - the most they were getting out of him was a shirt that didn't match his hair.
His gaze landed on his so-called date, who was lounging outside waiting for him. He doubted she'd been there long, at least. He took two seconds to debate if he should mess with her, or if he could opt for something a little more…normal. He decided normal may be safer…women in heels were dangerous things. "So, you wouldn't happened to have heard of a man named Jackson Lambros before, have you?" he asked casually. He himself didn't know the man beyond being told that was his contact, and the man funding the party for his friend or…something. Supposedly he had some level of fame…problems for him is the only aspect of his so-called fame the mafia saw from him was the potential money they could make from him. His mistake for volunteering to take care of all his brother's debts and his protection. He held the door open to allow Ana in the car first, at the very least, while he asked this - which was an automatic reaction…hell he even did it for Rayna. Though hers were normally accompanied by the most sarcastic remarks he could muster…

Ana adjusted her dress a bit as a black car pulled up. The sleek shine, newer model, and then the red head jumping out of it immediately gave away. Ana stood up from where she'd taken a seat and smoothed out the skirt of her dress as Lukas approached her. His normally wild appearance was toned down a little, but the piercings were still in. The hair was combed though, which was a good thing. He actually looked fairly handsome.
Ana gently pushed a curl away from her face as she walked to the SUV. Well, here went nothing. She wasn't sure what to expect, in all honesty. Certainly not the door being opened for her. Ana murmured a soft thanks as she carefully climbed in. Her heels were quite dangerous, a narrow pencil of at least four inches being the heel. "You look nice." His question about Jackson Lambros got a furrowed look as she thought.
"The name sounds familiar, but I wouldn't know him personally. I think he's a news anchor or a small time TV star, trying to shoot for the big leagues. Every time he goes down the street, he has people wanting his signature." Ana settled into the seat and strapped the seatbelt across her body before adjusting the air in the back to blow on her face. "Is the party in his honor for him getting married, or is he just hosting it?"

"Hosting, from what I heard. Was his friend or something…you know the game. Flaunting the wealth and showing off to his friends while pretending to be incredibly generous. At least that’s what I assume. Can't complain when it gives you an excuse to go get free wine and vaguely entertaining company. I'd almost feel like I was crashing just to make fun of them…if I didn't have an invite. Funny how that works." 'Absolutely hilarious. That’s what he get for having a brother who regularly gets in trouble with the law. He could have just disowned him…would have been a lot easier.' Ah well. The guy had given Lukas an easy job. Just go there, harass party goers, talk the deal out with the man, come home, and bam. More recognition for him amongst the families.
"I've had to described to me as a garden party a few times, though honestly who would want to be in a garden at this time of year is a little bit imbalanced if you ask me…" It wasn't exactly cold, but it was still March - chilly enough to be absolutely stupid to host anything outside. Knowing these people, he wouldn't be surprised…at least it wasn't entirely dark yet, so it wouldn't be chilly until a few hours later. The best Lukas could hope for was that this guy, by some miracle, had like…a greenhouse of a garden. Nice and closed in. "Then again, these are people trying to pretend to be high class. None of them are exactly sane." Hilarious sentiment coming from him, wasn't it? It was probably funnier to him, knowing he killed people for a living.
Hell he didn't see what the big deal was, but from the general reaction to the public to murderers, he'd been able to fit out people who killed other people were generally considered insane. He'd met holy people a lot crazier than him though, funny enough. He adjusted his sunglasses before he reached into the pocket inside his jacket, pulling out one of the invitations and held one out to her. "You'll fit in better than me at least. I bet you five bucks there's a woman in her forties or so who will watch me the entire time like I'm about to do something scandalous…like spike to wine, or piss in the flower bed." he exhaled sharply in amusement at his own sentiment. "You'd think I was running around carrying a huge knife all the time." 'Not necessarily huge, but it gets the job done…' Funny how that worked. Said knife was in the exact same pocket that had his invitation, too.

The car pulled away from the curb and they merged seamlessly into traffic. Ana set her clutch on the seat next to her and stretched her legs out a little before tucking them at the ankles and under her.
"So you're going to this party to laugh at people, essentially?" So he got an invitation to a party with people he didn't like, and he was going anyway? "You're so strange Lukas." Ana shook her head as she looked over at him. Garden party? Oops. She hadn't thought to bring a wrap, or wear a dress where she could wear stockings. Hello cold night. If they had a fire pit or heaters set up, that's where she'd set herself up at. She hoped to bob she didn't get sick, but then again she'd weathered worse. As long as no one sneezed or coughed on her, she'd be okay.
His bet about him looking scandalous made an amused snort escape her. "I bet that same woman will be trying to figure out how to corner you alone. One minute you'll have an older woman talking and the next you'll be half undressed by a cougar." Ana gave him a smirk. He looked like a rebel, but she knew how women worked. You desired what you couldn't have, or what was seen as forbidden. She was sure Lukas's looks alone could procure quite a few looks, some wanton thoughts. "Ten bucks says you have at least one woman corner you at this party and put the moves on you."

WORDS: 840 TAG: Ana [style=width: 480px; height: 22px; background-color: #6d6065; color: #c9d2df; font-family: Courier New; font-size: 11px; text-align: center; letter-spacing: 0px; text-transform: none; line-height:7px;] "Hey I gotta get my kicks somewhere, don't I?" he asked, keeping his face as straight as possibly, looking at her as if he was completely serious. That didn't last too much longer than five seconds, however. He was quick to come up with a story, as per usual. "I'm a representative to be honest. Someone called in a favor and asked me to go in their place because they couldn't make it. Good free food and entertaining schmoozing, though, so I didn't mind. You know me - I love people." It was an ironic truth - for killing them constantly, Lukas was a social person and relied on people to keep him entertained. That didn't mean he didn't think the people he was paid to take out didn't deserve it, though. If there ever was one constant truth, if someone is willing to pay that much money to have someone taken out of this world, ninety percent chance they definitely deserved it.
For all his complaining he actually did like the idea of a social event that wouldn't involve him stabbing the host at the end of it. Such a shame for those party goers, he was sure…but money was money. Even if there were…cougars half undressing him. 'What do you know, she does have a sense of humor. Good to know.' He was starting to think, with all the looks she gave him, it would take something horrible like…him getting kicked in the shins to make her laugh. "Ha! See now you've jinxed it it's going to end up happening. I've only gotten cornered by a cougar once before…was even worse then, I was only twenty…she was trying to shove a whole bottle of wine at me, too. You do realize I'm going to use you to defend myself against frisky old ladies, right? You'll be my personal human grope-sheild…"
It took about thirty minutes to drive there, the first half of which was scattered with similar idle chatter between the two, and when Lukas felt too lazy to hold up conversation anymore, he popped a headphone in one ear and relaxed, keeping one ear free just in case she did speak. When the driver tapped the passengers seat to get his attention, he sat up, and peered out the window - rich kid's party? He was definitely curious. It was pretty damn impressive, he had to admit - the house was only two stories but it had several decent-sized wings attached to the main building, which was large in and of itself. It wasn't quite what you'd call a mansion, but it was pushing close. It was surrounded by a lot of land and pastures scattered with a few horses - signaling there was a stable. From the looks they were racehorses - which said a lot about their money. He whistled a little bit upon seeing all this. "Someone's parents had money, didn't they? You don't just buy a place like this on this guy's salary…"
Actually, that made the whole story about the gambling debt incurred on the Russian's behalf make a lot more sense…the guy was probably betting on their horses. Or worse, was drugging their horses from home and betting on the other guys. He'd make sure to tell Aldridge - the family head taking an interest in this - to look into that. As for him - hell he didn't care. It took a second to get down the driveway, and as the vehicle slid to a stop in front of the entrance to the party, which led to the back, what caught his eye made him laugh. "Tents and a roofed-in garden are you serious? Oh Jesus…well it won't be as cold." He thought he saw small fires as well - which he suspected were completely closed in somehow and made to look as nice as possible. He supposed this was the equivalent of being eccentric, or something.
Whatever. He actually waited until the car stopped completely this time, fished out his invitation from his pocket before he got out just in case - accidentally whip out a switchblade at the bouncers? Solid idea, really. He hopped out, waited for his date, before walking up to the rather tall man standing guard at the gap in the fence, who looked a bit out of place, but Lukas suspected the guards were actually out because they knew he'd be here. Mafia made everyone nervous. He smiled nonetheless, and handed the man his invitation. There was a moment of almost-silence, broken only by the low buzz of chatter from the party in the back, before the guard grunted "Welcome to Mr. Lambros' party, Mr. Madeleine. We ask that you stay within the gardens and away from the house and stables. Enjoy your time." 'Sounds so convincing. Oh well at least he didn't ask to search me.' Someone had some faith in their friends…or at least, in their bodyguards. He simply smiled, thanked the man, and led Ana through the fence towards the backyard.

Ana gave him a cheshire grin. "Oh, you think so? Well then I just made an easy ten bucks. I'll let them paw at you, it should provide me endless entertainment!" After the laughing died down, the two of them lapsed into a comfortable silence. Ana went about fooling around with her phone and checking her email while the car drove to it's destination. Oh she had a back up plan that she carried with her everywhere she went, and she was halfway excited to put the plan in action - if nothing else to see the look on Lukas's face.
As they pulled up to the garden reception, Ana turned her phone to vibrate and pulled something out of her clutch as the door opened. "Well, this is going to be an entertaining event." She looked out the window over Lukas's shoulder as they came to a stop. The seatbelt was popped off and she started scooting over in the seat once Lukas started getting out. "It's called a green house Lukas, and as long as it's warm, it's alright." Her voice was lightly sarcastic, but not as harsh as it could normally be. Ana was actually looking forward to the party, if nothing else but to see the famous person who was plastered all over TV, have a nice drink, and meet new people. And of course walk around in her dress.
Obviously this girl did not get out much.
The driver was kind enough to wait on Ana and help her out as Lukas walked ahead to give the bouncer their invitation. To his credit he did wait as she unfolded her legs from the car and started walking after him. The cold nipped at her bare shoulders and Ana pulled a thick strand of curled hair over her left shoulder while slipping the item from her purse onto her hand. Ana looped her arm through Lukas's right arm once the bouncer let them in and wiggled her finger. A small engagement ring sat on her finger and Ana gave him a coy look. Oh, like he was the only one allowed to cause her trouble? Tit for tat, tooth for a tooth. "My back up plan, in case I have to save you from being mauled by cougars." The band was simple and the stone small, and it was actually real. It had belonged to her grandmother and when she'd passed away, Ana had gotten it. It came in handy when she was at school and didn't want to be bothered by people.
The garden they walked into was elaborate and the heat from the fires chased off the goosebumps that had started to raise on her skin. Ana let out a quiet 'wow' as she looked around and stuck close to Lukas - probably the first time she'd actually willingly touched him aside from smacking her hand across the back of his head when he said something smart.

None. That comment was best kept in his head. Oh but it had been a lot of times - the two of them kept false rings back at the apartment, not unlike his date here had one. He hadn't exactly brought his, though…so that meant the next best thing. Completely unfazed, he smirked wickedly at her "I guess that means I better swap mine to a different finger, eh?" He held out his left hand, which funny enough, had a ring on it, on his pointer finger - dull sterling silver, worn, and not exactly close to looking like an engagement ring, but like everything else, he could pull a story out of his ass about why it didn't. "I could make all the women jealous and say I spent all my money on yours so mine's a piece of crap. I'm a nice guy like that after all"
He pulled his sunglasses off, giving her a wink as he slid them into his pocket and swapped the band to his ring finger. As much as he wanted to keep the sunglasses on, he knew it'd make him stick out even more. He didn't need people noticing him too much, just in case. Plus people tended to see you as more suspicious with them on and all that crap. He drew Ana all the way into the garden which was teeming with a crowd of smartly-dressed men and woman obviously competing for who has the nicest dress without ranging into the 'too elaborate' range. Yep, typical party to him. Surprisingly the people at this party seemed less uptight than some of his recent ventures to them. He supposed it was due to the fact that was meant to be more…'casual'. That term was used lightly, mind you.
Before he could even properly react, the both of them were ambushed by a brunette woman who looked a little overeager. Before his brain could even fully form the thought of 'local gossip-monger and extreme socialite', she was speaking to them. "Oh my I've never seen either of you at Jackson's parties before. I was told it was carefully selected guests. No offense of course! Just curious. I'm Bonnie Engelman, by the way, I'm the sister of the bride." Ah. That made sense. 'Typical. They're normally neurotic…if it's not the sister it’s the bride itself.' Yes, he'd been to wedding parties before, and he knew exactly how to handle this. As if a flip had been switched, Lukas' entire demeanor shifted - he held himself a little taller, but still seemed comfortable, his smile looked genuine, and his voice suddenly sounded so far from the sarcasm that had been following him since he'd invited Ana you almost wouldn't believe it was the same man. Red hair and piercing aside, it was as if he suddenly belonged there.
"It's nice to meet you Miss Engelman. I'm Mrs. Belgard's representative, perhaps you know that name? She's on a family emergency at the moment. I was given her invite and asked to step in to apologize on our behalf, and reassure our host that she means no offense in this matter - it simply cannot be helped." This seemed to placate the woman. "Yes that name sounds familiar. She was helping Mr. Lambros' brother, right? I'm sorry I just - we had a bit of a scare the other day with trespassers and I'm a little nervous." Lukas kept smiling, amused by the thought those trespassers may well have been enforcers from one of the many organizations the less-than-famous Lambros brother had angered. Funny, that. "That's quite fine, your worry is understandable. I'm Lukas Madeleine, and this is my fiancée, Ana." He shot her an amused look as he said it, one eyebrow cocking slightly. Oh, he was going to have fun with this. She'd done it to herself.

Ana lifted an eyebrow when Lukas started to switch rings to different fingers. Why was he doing that? "I wasn't aware that men had engagement rings too," she said softly before they got around too many people. Eh, whatever, it worked regardless. It was something that she might do if that pivotal moment ever came. She'd want her man to wear something that made him off limits - although rings just weren't as sacred as they used to be.
The garden was beautiful as were all of the people. Ana straightened on Lukas's arm and relaxed as heat and hot house roses wafted over her. Then the brunette bomb landed smack dab in front of him. Ana blinked a few times in surprise when the woman automatically started off with 'I've never seen you before!' and Ana gave a small, almost sheepish smile. Sweet heart act? Working in full swing. Lukas seemed to mentally transform next to her as well as he handled the situation with such poise and grace it was almost impossible to tell that twenty minutes ago he'd been making crude jokes about the rich and famous.
Ana shifted a little on Lukas's arm as he calmed the woman down in a hundred words or less. Like a coiled spring she slowly deflated and eased off of her own tension. The black haired woman glanced up at Lukas with a subtle tilt of her head before smiling widely for the woman in front of her. "It's a pleasure to meet you Miss Engelman." Ana offered her hand that had the ring and like a magpie the woman took her hand and started ooh'ing over it.
"My word, it's so lovely! Congratulations on your engagement of course!" She turned it this way and that, almost as if she were looking for some sort of flaw in the ring. Ana flexed her fingers under the woman's scrutiny. Finally there was a cooing sound of praise as Miss Engelman glanced Lukas up and down and then at Ana. "You did well, he's handsome and your ring is absolutely beautiful!" Ana flushed a pretty red and took her hand back once the other woman let it go and rested it on Lukas's arm.
"Thank you, I appreciate it." The brunette looked past them at the other guests and waved at someone she knew before winking at Lukas. "Hang onto him tight darling, he's a looker and there are women here on the prowl. After all, best place to find a husband is at someone else's wedding, am I right? Have a good time!" She left with a quick wave before pouncing on her next victims. Ana let out a breath of relief. "For a minute I thought she was going to try and appraise it."

All the guy at the gate did was look me up and down. Yeah because if I have a gun it's totally going to be strapped to my waist where everyone can see it…' He couldn't help mentally pointing out all their flaws, even if it was to his advantage. He'd just dealt with so much tighter security and he liked the challenge sometimes. Then again…considering he had a completely oblivious date this time, the simpler the better. Rayna was sort of a bottom line requirement if he needed a date to pose with for undercover…that or someone he had completely wrapped around his finger. Even that took some work, though.
He stayed amused and silent, his convincing smile still held on his face as the woman played the usual high-class bullshit of pretending to admire the ring. He debated, for a moment, launching into a total bullshit story of 'how they met', just to see the look on Ana's face, but he decided he'd save it for later. If he wasn't distracted, anyway. He did have important things to attend to after all. He supposed he could allow himself about thirty minutes of mingling, give or take. He had to resist laughing as the woman made a comment for Ana to hang on to him due to the other women, keeping his expression carefully amiable as so not to encourage anything, seeing as she was obviously one of said women - he didn't need to lose one of the bets so early on, after all.
His smile tilted into a smirk for a brief second at Ana's comment as soon as the other woman was out of earshot. "She probably was. Expect a few of those. How much you bet if you meet the bride she'll play the compare game to show off she got the rich kid?" he replied quietly, his lips barely moving as he spoke, but still perfectly understandable. Obviously, he had the practice. Honestly, he should stop making bets…he had the worst luck with them. The piercing on his eyebrow and his unseen tattoos were testament to that. And yet he'd not invited three of them. It was like an awful habit he couldn't stop himself from. "Come on lets go mooch the expensive food and drink before someone else jumps us and tell us we aren't allowed here because you have the same dress as her or something..."

Ana watched her go as she nudged Lukas forward to keep walking just a bit. The more distance, the better off they might be. Quietly Ana looked towards Lukas as he talked. "I'm not making that bet, because I'll lose. I just know for a fact that you'll get badgered by women, and I'll be highly amused."
Ana walked with Lukas as they started making their way down the paths. Her shoes lightly clicked, blurring with the noise of small talk and the band that was playing. "Same dress? I sincerely doubt it, this dress was only fifty bucks, and that was with tax." The last part was muttered. Obviously everyone else glittered, but Ana had chosen to go with simplicity and modesty.
She didn't need to invite more trouble.
"The most expensive thing is the ring on my finger." Her voice trailed off a little as they rounded to a large gazebo, the band on a platform and the rest of the gazebo managed within an arbor. It was... beautiful. Fairy lights and ivy wove all across it and the white washed wood glowed against the soft red of the brick. Ana nearly stopped walking as she saw a few people dancing. For one moment she had a look of wistfulness. She remembered when her father would dance with her at their family's parties when she was younger. She'd always enjoyed it, but it wasn't something she got to indulge in all the time. The trumpet and saxophone called out a new song and after the first line of notes she automatically pinpointed it as Glenn Miller's In the Mood. How appropriate.
Ana looked away after a moment to cover her obviousness. They hadn't even come up with an engagement story either. Maybe they needed to get on that... "Yes, you need to be fed. Can't have you wasting away after all."

Even if he didn't meant to do it, it just…happened. He walked towards one of the small line of tents that lined the area, the one he was eyeing laden with food and a ridiculously ornate fountain of punch. Before his eyes could narrow down where the expensive wine was being handed out, though, he couldn't help but responding her Ana's comment about the amount of money most the other women here had probably spent on their outfits. "Good point. I doubt they shop thrifty. Hell I doubt they know how." Not that Lukas was one to talk…he had sunglasses in his pocket he'd probably paid upwards of $150 for. Not that he'd mention that, of course. What staple mafia enforcer made enough income to get things like that at the drop of a hat? None, of course.
He was drawn away from his statement when he realized how much she had slowed, and he tilted his gaze to the side with one eyebrow raised in question. She wasn't looking at him, though - she was looking at the small crowd of movement a small ways away of the few people who weren't too uptight to dance. He didn't say anything, but it was obvious she wanted to go over there. Lukas, admittedly, though, could smell the damn food and at least wanted a piece. Luckily, she seemed to pretend it had never happened, and he moved alongside her to the nearest table.
"Can't blame me…I could smell the hors d'oeuvres and the last thing I had to eat was a bagel for lunch." He gave her a mock pouting look as he said it, doubting she'd actually feel bad for him. When he bit off an edge of a dminiscule hunk of steak lathered in several different peppers, though, it was glorious, he wouldn't lie. He had to resist the expression of bliss, and he carefully eyed the area to see if anyone was watching, before inhaling the whole rest of it. He didn't even resist grabbing a second one. "Now I feel better." he stated plainly before he popped the second into his mouth.
He was admittedly silent for a good thirty seconds as he fed himself, and luckily, also managed to snatch a passing glass of wine off a serving tray to complete it. He grabbed a second while he was at it, offering it towards Ana. Finally, after he decided he wouldn't suffer under the constant smell of food nearby, he posed the question he'd meant to ask a minute ago. "You know, I'm waiting to see if you're going to demand I dance with you, because you obviously wanted to. What, afraid I have two left feet?" He smirked towards her, his expression belying his amusement. "Isn't that was married couples do anyway?" he stressed the married heavily, and couldn't resist wiggling his eyebrows slightly as he did. He couldn't help it. He liked attempting to push her buttons.

The smell of food was, she had to admit, incredibly tempting. People were picking this and that, carrying it off on plates to eat in other areas of the garden party. Ana picked a delicate looking snack and popped it into her mouth, pleased when the taste of chocolate, caramel, and maybe marshmellow rolled across her tongue. Lukas hid his bliss face, Ana happily showed hers. Chocolate was something she was addicted to, and it took every single ounce of self control to wipe her hands on a napkin instead of licking the chocolate from her fingers.
"I didn't feel bad for you earlier, but now I feel that I can take pity on you. Slightly. Think of it this way, you've been prepared to enjoy something far more wonderful - this spread." She'd have to figure out how they made the chocolate concoction she'd just eaten and put it on the menu at work - that was far too sinful to just ignore.
Ana paused at his question as she snagged a glass of champagne off of a server offering it to other people. The bubbles washed down her throat and she carefully waited. Then he stressed the married bit. Ana's eyes cut to him quickly as her brows furrowed and she glanced at his hand. He'd pulled out a ring. Almost like a puzzle, everything clicked into place. She'd joked about being engaged, and he'd been serious about playing the act - but they were married. That'd explain why he had a ring. It dawned on her face and she carefully waited a moment before looking at him. Oh he was practically glowing in glee!
Damn. Another plan backfired.
"I do want to dance, but the food sort of caught your attention." Her answer was a little vague as she gave him a wary look. She was almost daring him to pull a stunt, because the retribution would be ten fold later. But, they were supposed to be blissfully wedded. She drank the rest of the champagne for support before setting the flut down on an empty server tray. "If you step on my toes, I'll step on yours back." She had no witty comeback for this, which annoyed her somewhat. She didn't like admitting Lukas had outwitted her.

You'd think I was a completely heartless asshole or something." Oh, he was loving this. He knew there had to be a gossip monger or two - or maybe of those earlier mentioned cougars - listening in, and he was playing it up like she was the bad one. He sounded genuinely offended and everything - making Ana seem just plain standoffish. To the outside eye, anyhow. In a way he was using her as a tool to make himself look better, which was a habit he had when on the job - even if he didn't need to win the crowd in his favor. It was just an automatic thing. He took another small swig of his drink, and decided to really lay it on think.
He finished off his third little steak hors d'oeuvres, wiped his mouth just in case, and repositioned himself so that he was standing more in front of his supposed date, as if he was formally presenting himself in front of her. With a smirk only she would be able to see, he tilted himself forward in a half bow, and reached forward with the hand that wasn't cradling a champagne glass to snatch her hand in his. "My dear lady you act like I'm entirely uncivilized. By now you should have realized I'm the perfect gentleman, and a properly trained, well brought up one, to boot." He made a complete show of this as he said it, just for his - and to a lesser extent, Ana's - amusement. Though her amusement would likely be more like annoyed which was what he counted on. Pushing her buttons was fun.
"Now, would you like to dance with me?" he asked in the most sincere voice he could manage, which anyone listening in would think he was being very genuine, but he suspected Ana knew better. He was just putting on a show, as per usual. He was quite pleased to notice a few of the women nearby giggled at the display, and he could see at least one middle-aged man who looked a little put-off by the fact he'd just managed to show up most the other husbands and dates here by doing that. Other people would hate the kind of spotlight it gave him but he didn't mind. He'd had a whole lot worse attention on him before.
Ignoring the others, and any protests she may have to what he'd done, he set his glass down and used the hold he had on her hand and pulled her off to the small dance floor they had set up next to the live band. He didn't know how long he had until he had to find the rich ass who was running this party, but he suspected if he amused Ana a bit before he disappeared, and maybe left her with the socialites to talk to, she wouldn't notice his 'bathroom break' would take far longer than was natural. He was hoping taking her out on the dace floor for a bit would give the illusion of his paying more attention to her for when later he disappeared…he didn't like dancing per se, but it was a second nature when at a party at this point. He did it so much it was like automatic movement.
He swept her up the stairs of the platform and onto the hardwood, thankful there were only three or four other couples here - most obviously older married couples, and one couple who looked like the teenage kids of said married couples. Meant he didn't have to deal with a suffocating crowd - especially since the platform wasn't that big. He turned to walk backwards a second, pulling her along with a smug look, before stopping, stepping towards her, lifting her hand so that it was above her head, and moving swiftly around her so that she was forced to spin around. He pulled her arm around so that the force would move her, and as she came out of the movement and was facing him again, he pulled her close and placed his other hand along his waist. His self-satisfied expression was worse than ever. "Seriously, did you think I would go to such a lovely party and not know how to properly dance? For shame." he spoke lowly, unable to resist goading her.

Ana felt her eyebrow twitch as Lukas carried on his little act. Oh, he was going to make her look like an ass?? Memo to self.... kick his ass later. Ana shot him a look as she heard some of the women behind her giggle. She leveled them a cool look as she sipped a glass of champagne, her appetite no longer her first priority.
Lukas and crunching his toes moved up on that list.
Ana eyed Lukas with a quiet cough, her look promising that he'd hear about this later. He wanted to play such a game? Oh, she'd play his little game. Ana set her glass down as he bowed down in front of her and took her hand. "Uncivilized? You? I wouldn't dare dream of it..." Her tone was nothing but sugary sweet and very soft - but the sarcasm wouldn't be that hard to hear under it all. His invitation to dance earned a gracious nod as she followed after him. There was a healthy dose of color to her cheeks as he led her up to the dance floor and she eyed Lukas's back. Her heels clicked lightly against the hardwood stairs and then the dance floor. Not a lot of people were there, but she recognized the strains of the next song as a DJ took over for the band to have a break. Enrique Iglesias's Maybe filtered across the speakers as he lifted her hand up and into the air. Ana looked confused for one moment before he spun her and then tugged her forward so that she spun into him. Ana's hair spun around her with the force of the spin before she gently bumped into Lukas. Her hand came up to cushion her against his chest, but he had already deftly caught her and had his hand around her waist.
That move was a lot smoother than she'd thought it would be. Ana's face was flushed, somewhere between annoyance and embarrassment at his little scene, as she looked up at him. Lukas was a little taller than eye level as her hand crept up his chest to rest on his shoulder. They moved smoothly across the floor and Ana eyed his smug expression. All it would take would be one step out of line to put her toes on the soft leather of his shoes...
Before she could make that dream a reality, he started talking. "I'm surprised you can dance. When you asked me to a party, I didn't think you'd actually dance with me." Too bad that Ana was under the illusion that they were actually going out on a somewhat stilted date, playing pretend that they were something they actually weren't. Ana didn't mind it, per say. Lukas was tolerable even if he goaded her - the rat. She hadn't gone out and done anything for herself, so dancing was actually... nice.
Too bad she didn't know this was actually for the /mafia/ and not her. Ah well, in time, she would come to know. But at that moment, she was blissfully ignorant, and after a few turns on the floor she started to relax in his arms and enjoy the song. She didn't step on his feet like she fantasized about, but moved well enough so that they avoided any embarrassing toe stepping situations. "I'm just going to let you know now, pull another stunt like you did just then, and I'll make sure every old cougar in this joint gets a piece of your underwear." Her tone was soft and sultry as she halfway leaned up on her toes to say it in his ear. To anyone else, it'd look romantic; but the smug look on her face said otherwise.
