Incomplete thoughts bounced around in Piper’s generally frazzled and undeniably hollow-at-the-moment head, assuming a state of confusion that was generally looked down upon when you were a model (of some sort). Well, models were human beings too, so stereotypes could go screw it.
A variety of buildings littered the otherwise empty area, besides the occasional car that zoomed past. The silence was eerie, but also unsettlingly calming, though that was to be expected of somebody who was generally worn down and haggard pretty much every day. Piper embraced the tranquility with open arms. At the moment, anything could’ve made her happy, because the one word that could express her at the moment, that one blissful, wonderful word, was freedom. She was free of her pretty-looking-woman duties for one whole day. The skies weren’t stormy – there were only a few outlier clouds lazily making their way through – and the temperature was just right.
Her womanly apparel consisted of a rather tomboyish white T-shirt that went well with her faded blue jeans (come on, anything goes well with jeans), as well as her colour of the day – green. Olive green, to be irritatingly specific, as she was wearing a fleece vest, a comfortable fedora and sneakers in that very colour, completing her “I don’t want to model so leave me alone” outfit. Modeling pays her generously, yes, but that didn’t mean she adored it to pieces (well, if you counted the fact that she loved the money-giving to pieces, but she’s not counting that).
She allowed a small sigh to escape parted lips as she took a look around – not the friendliest place she’s ever visited, but hey, she’s also encountered worse. That didn’t mean she was going to let her guard down, but when supplied with the skill to thrust your palm at a guy’s nose, it will get you very far. There’s also the knee to the groin, but that’s incredibly cliché, and Piper’s an incredibly non-cliché person.
Piper looked both ways, and suddenly, the crucial thought hit her: what the hell am I doing here? One look to the right, one look to the left, and suddenly she was lost. She stood there, with her chin rested on a propped up arm, as she pondered the reason for her existence at the area that she was at now. There was a coffee shop right there, but coffee shop endeavors were never fun if you were alone. Stumped, she continued to stand there, waiting for something exciting to happen. The odds of that were, sadly, quite low.

There was absolutely no way in hell that he was going to admit that he was lost in Los Angeles. In New York City he was willing only because he did not know the location very well. As for Los Angeles, the location of his birth and childhood? His pride refused to admit that he had no idea where he was or where he was going. So now he was just walking along random streets trying to find his way back to familiar territory.
Nate turned down another corner. There was a woman standing on the sidewalk but nothing out of the ordinary other than that. Nate walked past her as he contemplated where to go. Maybe I should ask for directions. It’s not like that woman knows I’m from Los Angeles right?
Nate turned around to ask but stopped after actually seeing the woman for the first time. When he had passed her at first, he had glanced at her but not really looked. Now, he could see that the woman that he had passed was beautiful. She was not dressed in anything special but he could see her face and she looked as if she could be a model. Wait, hell no. What am I doing gaping at another woman? Even if said woman is absolutely gorgeous... NO. I have Nemi now. What kind of boyfriend am I? Shit, it looks like she is looking this way. I better get going.
Quickly, Nate turned around and began to walk again. He needed to find his way home fast. It was not that late yet but even so, he wanted to get back and see Nemi. Nate smiled at the thought. It was a nice feeling when you could go home and see your girlfriend. Unfortunately for Nate, there were other things that needed to be done before he could get home.
As he walked in front of a cafe, a sharp pain in the back of his head made him see stars. Either someone had just punched or thrown something at the back of the head or there was something seriously wrong with his skull and he needed to see a doctor. He was sure that he felt something solid milliseconds before impact so the former was more likely.
Nate turned around to yell at whoever had done such a thing. ”What the hell was that for!?” He had just wanted to go home, was that so much to ask? And he had done nothing to deserve such treatment so whoever it was had better have a good explanation for the throbbing in the back of his head.

As she stood there contemplating the various meanings of life, a man with a head of black hair passed her by. Piper slowly lifted her head, ripping her gaze from the small crack in the sidewalk to the man with the head of black hair. Funny, because it was an incredibly familiar head of black hair.
Piper studied him, and soon after, it hit her – no way, that cannot be Nate. Nathaniel Brandt? The boy who she loved for a very long time, only to slip away from her grasp? The dumb, extremely obtuse boy who never realized her feelings, nor even tried (maybe he did) to interpret her oh-so-subtle attempts to bring their friendly relationship even further?
Was it that Nate?
Looking at him, she grew more confident in her deductions. Yes, that was most definitely Nate. He’d matured. His posture was more manly, more dignified, his facial features more handsome, but still managing to retain his dense (dense to Piper) demeanor. A slight, lopsided smile allowed itself to decorate her visage, her countenance brightening.
Oh man, he’s looking at me. Damn, I don’t have any good clothes to show him. Oh well, I never really cared about those, anyway—wait, where are you going?
Piper watched, her expression becoming more and more crestfallen, as the man, presumably Nate, turned around and walked away. He even looked like he was speeding up, as if he were trying to get away from her. What? What happened?
Perhaps… he didn’t recognize me?
She was becoming more self-conscious, her conclusions slowly falling apart. Did she merely jump to conclusions? She’d been dreaming of the day that she met Nate again, so perhaps that clouded her judgment. Piper watched in vain hope as the man continued to walk away, his back turned. It hurt. But, no, looking at him, he was definitely the Nate that she liked so long ago.
Suddenly, her girly demeanor was replaced by a look of anger. Fueled by extreme irritation, her hands balled up into fists as she made her way towards Nate. Her fedora nearly flew off her head. It would’ve been a pity to get it dirty, so a very, very, very miniscule part of her breathed a sigh of relief. But that wasn’t the important thing to be worried about. Piper was worried, oh yes. The man that she loved (and probably still did, only she didn’t realize it yet), was about to get away from her once more. Fate had graced her with a lovely opportunity; it would be such a shame to let it pass. She walked until she was right behind him, and then, gathering power from all the places of her body, she moved in for the kill.
Whack!
A mighty, womanly backhand connected successfully with the back of Nate’s head. He whirled around and yelled, “What the hell was that for!?” More temporary anger.
“That was for you, stupid nut! What, you didn’t even have the common courtesy to say a simple ‘hello?’” she retorted, raising her voice to make a point. But that wasn’t the finishing blow.
“Wait…” Piper narrowed her eyes suspiciously, tilting her head to the side just a tiny bit, adding to the generally intimidating effect that she was trying to portray. “Are you actually going to tell me that you forgot?” She was very tempted to follow the statement with another slap, but she waited. She forced herself to wait, but she wasn’t going to be for long. If Nate didn’t remember, she’d…
Of course, all of her vexation was strictly temporary; she’d get over it soon. Well, Nate better hope it did.

Nate could only stare at the girl in confusion what was she talking about. He was pretty sure that he would have remembered the girl if he had ever met her. From the looks of it though, the girl did not seem very happy to be seeing him. Whoever she thought he was must have pissed her off big time.
”Miss, are you sure you don’t have the wrong person? I’m pretty sure I don’t know you. And even if I did, you shouldn’t go around hitting people in the back of their heads,” Nate said with a frown as he caressed the throbbing in the back of his skull. Damn that girl could pack a punch. Unfortunately, from the look on the woman’s face she did not seem to believe him when he denied her claims.
”Listen, I don’t know who you think I am but my name is Nate Brandt and I’m pretty sure I’ve never met you before. I think you have the wrong person. If you actually do know me, I’ll treat you to lunch as an apology, okay?” Yes, I clearly don’t know you so realize your mistake and leave me alone. Or better yet point me in the correct direction out of this place. Nate hoped that this could be cleared up quickly. He wanted to get home.

What was this monstrosity? Did he really forget about her, Piper McQueen, his best childhood friend? Did he perhaps go through some sort of brainwashing ritual? Because that was how it seemed to Piper at the moment.
She brought her hand up and made a dramatic “face-palming” motion, letting the dense boy know that she obviously knew what she was doing at that he was the one at fault. As she leaned on one leg, she thought about what she could do to him before actually letting him know about her apparently secret identity. A small part of her was afraid that she actually had gotten the wrong person…
… but of course, that was all cleared up when the man called himself Nate Brandt. Um, hello? I know that already. Let’s move on. Like, how about the part where I smack you in your sorry head once more to let you know that I actually have a right to? You know, because… you kind of forgot who I am? On what planet is that not rude? Of course, this entire useless monologue that resided inside her head wasn’t going to help him recover his memories, so the woman decided to do it for him: Piper style.
“Crash course for the amnesiac,” she started, twirling her hair with her finger, as she began to walk around Nate in a slow circle, like a predator locked onto its prey. “Let’s go back in time. All the way back. To a time where, hmm… let’s see, how about that time in high school? Actually, no, scratch that, let’s go all the way back to middle school. Ah, those were the days,” she sighed, shaking her head. “It’s too bad you don’t remember them, huh, Nate Brandt?” Piper made sure to emphasize his name. Piper’s anger was quelled – now she just wanted to see how the big goof reacted when he realized that he was talking to the Piper McQueen.
“Anyway, middle school. There was a girl from your middle school days, someone that I think you cherished quite a bit. A best friend is what I would call it. Only now, I think it’s more accurate to say childhood friend,” she stated, tilting her head thoughtfully, successfully pulling an ingenious coy façade. “Is it coming back yet? Has the ‘ah, sou ka!’ moment come yet? Would you like for me to be straight with you?” The woman sighed, folding her arms across her chest and shaking her head. A tight smile pulled at the corners of her lips, although whether it was from pity, remorse or sadness, one couldn’t tell. Perhaps it was all three.
“Well, that was a pretty bad start, wouldn’t you agree? Let’s start off on the right foot, or whatever the saying is. The name’s Piper McQueen. Yoroshiku.”

Perhaps this person was a wannabe actress or something. They were in Los Angeles, after all. Nate only reaffirmed that thought as the brunette woman began to walk around him, all the while twirling a strand of her brown hair in her fingers. Yep, definitely a wannabe actress.
“Crash course for the amnesiac.” Nate rolled his eyes. Oh boy, here we go.
“Let’s go back in time. All the way back. To a time where, hmm… let’s see, how about that time in high school? Actually, no, scratch that, let’s go all the way back to middle school. Ah, those were the days. It’s too bad you don’t remember them, huh, Nate Brandt?” Nate let her words sink in. There were not many friends that he remembered having that far back. Although... there was that one girl and her sister. What was her name again? But from what he could remember, that girl was always such a tomboy. The woman standing before him certainly did not look like a tomboy. Then again, they did both have the same hair and eye color-
-oh no. It could not be. There was no way. They may have been separated for years but this change. It was so extreme. There was no way that little tomboy Piper McQueen could change into someone so gorgeous. He was gone for a few years but to change that much in that short a time span?
“Is it coming back yet? Has the ‘ah, sou ka!’ moment come yet? Would you like for me to be straight with you?” Nate froze. Yes. No. Oh shit, she spoke in Japanese. Piper was not Japanese but she loved speaking the language didn't she?
“Well, that was a pretty bad start, wouldn’t you agree? Let’s start off on the right foot, or whatever the saying is. The name’s Piper McQueen. Yoroshiku.” Shitshitshitshitshitshit.
”P-Piper... ” Nate stammered. He was dead meat. He knew it. He could say good bye to the world now that he had pissed off Piper McQueen. ”Good to see you. How many years has it been? I suppose I owe you lunch now, don’t I?” Nate laughed nervously. ”Wanna grab a bite to eat and catch up here?” Nate asked gesturing to the cafe beside them.
Despite him being worried about being on the receiving end of more well deserved punches it was really good to see his old friend again. Nate could not wait to catch up with her.

Piper watched as a flurry of emotions came and went on Nate’s extremely expressive, open book face. It was incredibly amusing. The satisfaction she felt when Nate began to put the pieces together was overwhelming, and by the time she was finished, she had Nate blubbering. She couldn’t help herself – she burst out laughing. She clutched her stomach and nearly double over, tears threatening to fall. Nate was too funny. He was also much cuter than she’d thought. That was good – he’d kept his cuteness factor up, despite looking like a man. She liked those kinds of guys. Of course, her preferred type of guy was generally influenced by too much of Nate during her childhood days.
“Ju—just a minute! Let me, uh, catch my damn breath,” she tried to say between short bursts of unnecessary laughter. Her hat finally succumbed to the force of gravity, toppling off her head in a rather dramatic fashion (of course, how a hat can be dramatic, nobody will ever know). She didn’t mind it, though – at least, not at the moment. She was too busy laughing at the stammering Nate, who now owed her lunch. Perfect, she thought happily. Free lunch and a catch up session with Nate. I wonder if he’s gotten any girlfriends yet. The thought had never occurred to Piper, but when she finally stopped laughing at stopped to study his facial features, she realized that it was a very, very viable possibility. Which then brought another question to the surface: who could actually put up with his slow nature? Obviously Piper wasn’t able to break through it, and the thought that somebody had managed to incur a bit of jealousy, but she quickly dismissed it.
“Yes, you sure as hell owe me lunch,” she replied, another giggle escaping parted lips. “All this laughing is burning calories.” Yes. Yes, it was. She walked over to Nate and gave him a well-deserved punch in the arm, albeit somewhat lightly. She wasn’t allowed to break him. Well, not yet, anyway. “We can go to that cute little café over there. Catch up and everything.” Piper pointed in the café’s direction, Java Café. A grin tugged at the corners of her lips – it was like Fate itself had blessed her with another chance to meet with him. It was great – she’d have to remember to thank Fate later. How she was going to do that, she didn’t know, but she’d think of something when the time for it came. Right now, everything was for catching up with Nate’s life – particularly his love life.
“So, Nate,” she started, as she began to walk towards the café. “You hook up with anybody yet? Girlfriends? I wouldn’t put it past you anymore – you’re gotten better looking.” The grin grew wider as she turned to face him. “Of course, you never really seemed to get that I liked you back then, you big oaf.” There. Mission “Let’s Make Nate Blush!” begins.

Nate watched as the woman, nay, his childhood friend Piper double over in laughter. This situation certainly was funny, but not to Nate. He had nearly mistaken her for a crazy woman and was expecting her to be a lot angrier at him. The laughter he was not anticipating until later when she was less angry and he was less embarrassed. Nate willingly gave her time to catch her breath. He needed the time to come out of the shock and to try and comprehend the situation.
I left for college. I came back from college. I met Piper here. Piper has grown up... And on it went until Piper finally pulled him out of his reverie when she lightly punched him and accepted his offer for lunch.
“Yes, you sure as hell owe me lunch. All this laughing is burning calories.”
Nate smiled and relaxed as she spoke. Despite having dramatically changed her outward appearance, it seemed that she had not changed at all on the inside.
”You haven’t changed a bit,” Nate grinned. ”I’m sorry for not recognizing you at first,” he continued sheepishly.
”Girlfriends? Yeah, I do have a girlfriend. Her name is Nemi,” he said softly. Nate thought back to Nemi with her blue eyes and beautiful smile. Call him a sap, but he was sure that the look on his face was one of pure bliss as he talked about her. Nemi, was possibly the best thing that had ever happened to him and yes, he was in love. How he was able to get such a brilliant girlfriend, he would never understand. But now that he had her, he never wanted to let her go. ”And handsome, what are you talking about? Since when have you ever thought of me as-”
Piper’s next words nearly made his heart stop. ”Come again, you what?” Nate asked as he followed her into the cafe and took a seat at the table across from Piper. And in typical Nate fashion, he decided to laugh it off. ”You liked me? Huh, well I’m sure that was all in the past. With your looks, I’m sure that you must have a boyfriend of your own, right?” Goodness, this is getting awkward. ”So see anything on the menu that you’d like? I’ve never been here before so I have no idea what’s good.”

The moment Piper heard Nate speak his girlfriend’s name in such an adoring fashion, she knew without a doubt that the old fool was in love. I should tell him that he’s practically drooling, but I’ll let him fantasize about all the naughty things that he’s bound to be thinking about right now, she thought haughtily, allowing a snarky, all-knowing smile spread across her face. The young woman, being assertive, allowed herself to lead Nate into the cute, homely little café. She pushed the door open, cuing the sound of a bell. Almost instinctively, she took a curt sniff, just to get a taste of the atmosphere. The smell of fresh coffee signified that it was indeed a very good café, and one worth noting. She took great care to file the words Java Café into her little archive inside her mind. Sometimes, it was all about the atmosphere that a café set that would gauge the level of enjoyment for a certain morning customer, and welcoming effluvia was always a plus.Piper hadn’t been able to whip her head around to witness the man’s various facial expressions, a pity, though the shock in his voice allowed her to fully visualize it in her head. A chuckle escaped her lips as she busily scoured the room for a comfortable-looking table. Spotting an adorable table for two, right beside the windows, she once again set off on a journey to this magnificent dining board.
Once the two of them had taken a seat, Piper was able to fully comprehend Nate’s ever so interesting visage. As she neatly planted her elbow on the cold, wooden surface and rested her cheek on her hand, she watched as Nate decided to laugh it all off, as if it were a big joke. If they were still in their middle school days, Piper might’ve been compelled to punch him, but the fruits of her maturity shown as she laughed along with him. She swung a leg over the other and said, “Actually, I don’t have anybody I’m seeing at the moment. Jeez, for some people, it’s all about your outward appearance; never truly wanting to actually get to know you. It’s one of the reasons why I’ve never really been one to reciprocate other people’s ‘feelings’ for me, because, let’s face it, they have none.” She offered a sheepish smile. “Of course, when I actually had somebody I liked, that certain someone was too dense to put the puzzle pieces together.”
Piper pursed her lips, twirling stray strands of brown hair as she pondered what she’d like to order. “I don’t know. Perhaps just a coffee? I’m smelling it from over here.” Another coy, sideways glance in his general direction. “I can pay, you know – just in case you don’t have anything in those pockets of yours. Catching up with a nice cup of coffee sounds awfully nice, don’t you think?”

Nate was surprised, and to be honest, a bit uncomfortable with the way Piper was acting. He had asked the question about her romantic relationships to turn the discussion away from himself and the fact that Piper liked him but that seems to have backfired. Nate is dense, and Piper knew that. Was she flirting with him or just trying to be friendly while they talked about the past? He could not tell. But the truth of the matter is that, she was pretty and he still remembered all the fun times they had together. But the problem was just that: she was a friend to him. He did not feel anything more than a platonic friendship for her. Her words were beginning to put Nate in an awkward position. If she was flirting, he did not know how to react. If she was not, well Nate would have made an ass of himself. Again.
”I agree. If you just like them for their looks then, you’re not actually looking at them but what you envision them to be. I know that now, ever since I met Nemi. She’s different then my previous girlfriends. Well, I’m sure you’ll find someone for you someday.” Nate smiled. Well, he had to respond somehow and that was better than nothing. He would try to play it off again but he would really rather discuss something else with her.
Mentally, he was able to breathe a sigh of relief when she changed the subject to who was paying. ”No, no. I’ll pay. I insist. After all I was the one that forgot you. I promised to treat you if I really did know you didn’t I? Coffee sounds very nice. Now. How have you been these past five years? Have you done anything interesting?”

Piper seemed to notice with uncanny perception that she was successful at making Nate flushed. Mission accomplished, she thought with (sadistic) glee. She leaned in a bit more, twirling her finger around the rim of her coffee cup, taking a whiff. She took the cup with her hand and brought it to her lips, taking a “genteel” sip before setting it down with her pinky extended. It was probably her manner of speaking – even she would admit it, she can be a bit flirty at times. But for this, she wasn’t trying to be a terrible flirt with Nate. Yes, she wanted her fun, but she wasn’t trying to force herself onto him.
Of course, that was most likely how Nate was interpreting it, and it was becoming pretty damn hilarious. Hey, a girl has to indulge sometimes.
Still, Piper knew that Nate was a hopeless romantic – otherwise, he would probably never try to cheat on his girlfriend. Piper knew that much. As such, she attempted to direct her attention elsewhere, to have a nice, friendly conversation with her ex-crush. Sigh, sometimes, for some people, their first loves would never be answered. That was how it was for Piper.
“Thanks for the coffee, Nate,” she thanked him graciously, taking another well-deserved sip. Ah, pure bliss. She really, really needed her morning coffee – if she didn’t get it, it would ruin her mood for the rest of the day. Unless, of course, she was exposed to certain stimuli. In this case, the stimulant was sitting right in front of her.
“Hmm… past five years, huh?” Piper pondered that for a moment. Well, if you excluded the parts about her sister, her life has been pretty much peachy; on track. Oh, yes, there was that model job that she’d gotten recently. But no, other than those, her life has been pretty dang normal. Which was perfectly fine – she wouldn’t have wanted otherwise. Would she tell Nate about her modeling job? She didn’t really like to boast about it (she never really referred to it as boasting, anyway. More like informing the ignorant about her career. No, not career. How about… her method for earning money?).
Yes. She tells.
She hesitated for a slight moment, allowing a curt pause to fill the silence, before saying, “I got myself a modeling job.” She searched Nate’s face for reactions, before continuing, “I only do it for the money, though. Since I was scouted, I thought, ‘Why not?’ It would’ve been terrible to let the opportunity pass, and I was really desperate at the time…” She allowed her voice to trail off, turning her head to one side. She gazed out the window, suddenly seeming like she were pondering the reason of life. Suddenly, it looked like she was the awkward one.
Another sheepish smile in Nate’s general direction. “Sorry, I don’t know. Sure, it’s great money, but… I don’t know, maybe I don’t have enough energy for it? It’s kind of awkward.” She pursed her lips, constructing her next words. “In case you were wondering… I go under the name Lola. Maybe you’ve seen me. Actually, wait; maybe I shouldn’t have said that.” Wow, Piper. Smooth. She smoothed out her hair, looking a bit flushed. “Well, if you were ever looking through magazines, you’d probably…” Her eyes lit up, and suddenly, the sweet, flushed girl demeanor was gone again.
“Ha! I was about to say ‘You’d probably recognize me’ or something along those lines, but no.” She smiled, suddenly waddling in self-confidence and affection. “What about you? How’s it going on your end? We didn’t keep in touch.” She was tempted to say something along the lines of: Other than your girlfriend, of course. But she bit her lip, adamant. She was not going to reunion what was becoming a sweet reunion. She’s save the snarky comments for later.

It was the least that he could have done considering how he walked right past with her without recognizing her. ”It’s not a problem at all,” Nate replied. Then he too picked up his own coffee cup and took a sip as he listened to Piper detail the past five years of her life. Now that she had finally stopped flirting with him, he felt that they could continue their reunion without the uncomfortable tension.
Honestly, Nate was surprised to learn that Piper had become a model. That is not to say that she could not have succeeded as such with her looks. It was just, five years ago Nate never saw Piper as model material. She was a cool girl in her own right but models were actresses and needed to communicate with the camera to convey stories. Nate never saw that in Piper. Well, then again, I really never saw her as anything more than a childhood friend.
Nate watched Piper’s reactions as she spoke. It was all so strange. It was only five years and yet now there was so much that he did not know about the girl. Nate wanted to ask her questions about what she said such as Money problems? Are you okay? Did something happen? Or perhaps Are you okay? You seem flushed? But Nate was no longer sure whether or not Piper would be comfortable with him inquiring about such things. He wanted to that was for sure. He was concerned. Somehow, they had lost contact with each other over the past five years. They had drifted apart to the point where he did not recognize her and he no longer knew how to act around her. Had five years really changed us so much? Nate reminisced about his childhood and the days they spent together. It would be nice if we could be as close as we once were...
”How have I been? Well I graduated college obviously. I got my bachelors degree in the arts,” Nate beamed. ”Of course there is not much I can do at the moment job wise. It’s a difficult industry to get into.” Nate frowned. Should he tell her about his current job, as embarrassing as it was? Might as well; she did tell him about hers. I’m currently working as a photographer at Disneyland. I take pictures of tourists,” Nate spoke with a wry grin. ”At least it gets the bills paid. I still take pictures in my free time. Remember how obsessed I was with photography. Who am I kidding, I still am.”
Nate sipped the last of his coffee and placed the cup back on the table. He was unsure of what more there was to say. He wanted to know more about what life for Piper was like during the past five years. He wanted to rekindle his friendship with her. But of course, he was much too awkward to come up with other questions. So he said the first things that popped into his mind. ”So, um, modeling... I don’t look at magazines much so I can’t say that I have seen your photos. But I’d like to. Fashion photography was never my strong point but it is interesting nonetheless. Maybe I could see some of your photos or maybe we could get together and you could model for me sometime. It’d be fun... But it’s okay if you don’t want to.”
Nate felt like hitting his head against the table. Nice going Nate. She’s a professional model. She’s not going to say yes so casually. Way to make yourself seem more awkward and weird than before.

That was nice to know, Nate getting his bachelor’s degree in the arts. She fondly regarded past memories of his fanatic behavior towards photography. Piper remembered loathing photography (and she still does, though her pent-up hatred had toned down considerably). She still wonders how she manages to go on with her job, seeing as she has no love for it whatsoever. She had no particular talents, not many things going for her, and a considerable amount of weaknesses. It was a miracle, so to speak. Piper was, obviously, oblivious to her natural talent as a model. Maybe it was her looks – she couldn’t tell anymore.
“Wow, that’s nice. I suppose it is a difficult industry to get in, but quite frankly, I wouldn’t know much about it,” she blindly agreed with Nate, suddenly unaware of their subject of conversation. If they kept it up, she’d end up making herself look stupid in front of her ex-crush and their affectionate (as she would put it) reunion would be, in her opinion, utterly ruined. Her face displayed a slight look of confusion, with one eyebrow perked up and her nose wrinkled slightly. However, it immediately disappeared the moment Nate mentioned his photography job at Disneyland. She promised to herself that she wouldn’t laugh and make him look like a fool. The corner of her lip twitched.
Well, not too hard.
She let out a chuckle, somewhat dignified yet somehow casual (like, 20% formal and 80% wow-that’s-amazing-but-not-really). She, in no way, meant for it to seem hurtful. Well, it was how she usually acted around Nate (or, used to), so she figured that she’d be fine. However, she made a mental note to not push her luck. “Ha-ha. You’re as bad as me.”
Consider the luck pushed.
Instantly her face contorted from the guilt. This was perfectly visible on her face. She attempted to fix it, saying, “Well, I mean, as long as it gets the bills paid. It’s… not like my job is bad or anything. Gets the bills paid. Right.” Her fingers were secretly crossed, and she prayed to any deity that would listen to keep his emotions under control. Under any other normal circumstances, Piper would've realized that she was overreacting and proceeded to relax. However, these were not normal circumstances. At least, not to Piper. She awkwardly fumbled for her coffee cup, taking a sip. Please don’t take that the wrong way. Onegai! Imagine her relief when the subject was changed.
“Of course,” she immediately agreed, practically wiping the sweat away from her brow (inside her mind, of course). “It’d be my pleasure, Nate…” Piper hesitated, wondering if there was anything else for her to say. Details, perhaps? Wow, look at this situation becoming all professional.
“So…?” Piper looked up at Nate expectantly, waiting for him to continue with what he’d planned.

Nate looked away from Piper’s face as she took in the information. Piper’s laughter at his job was expected. Nate tried not to mind it too much. Honestly, who would want to go around taking pictures of tourists? This was why I didn’t want to tell her. It would take time but he hoped to be able to make enough money from his photographs to be able to quit his job and still support both himself and Nemi. Until then there was not much that he could do about the situation. He could always get Piper back later when he found out something embarrassing about her; the thought put a small smile on his face. Nate did not miss Piper’s sudden change in expression but decided not to ask about it. Knowing Piper, she would talk to him when she needed to. At least he hoped she would. The years have changed both of them as much as he loathed admitting. He hoped that she still considered him a friend as much as he did her. ”Wait, really?” Her quick agreement to model for him came as a surprise. For some reason he had been expecting her to reject him. And on some level he had been hoping for her to reject him. Fashion photography was not something he had ever done much of. Then again, this could be a good chance for him. It had been some time since he was last able to take photographs for fun instead of work. ”Oh, well let’s see. When are you free? I’m generally free on Mondays and Tuesdays. Then again, the lighting is really bright in California... What if we did it at night? Have you ever heard of light painting? I did it once during university and it’s really cool.”Nate stopped. He was going to start going on a tangent about photography lighting and the importance of it if he continued. Was there anything else I was missing...?”Oh, and of course I’ll pay you.” How could he have forgotten that? Piper was not going to model for free. He doubted any famous models would. ”Here, let me give you my cell phone number and we can work out the details later.Notes: Sorry for my lack of muse I posted this from my iTouch while I was at work so there might be some mistakes >___>

“Of course!” replied the perfectly willing Piper at Nate’s outburst. “I’d love too. After all, it would mean more quality time for the two of us.” Giddiness began to well up inside of her, until it threatened to overflow and cause Piper to go into spasms of happiness.
… Okay, that was over exaggerated, but Piper was most certainly pleased. It was an opportunity for her to meet up with Nate again. She’d get the chance to learn more about him – after all, this meeting was not planned, and as a result, somewhat choppy and awkward. She hated that, and was tempted to just give him her number and run off with a red face. But that wouldn’t do her any good. It’d ruin her image that Nate probably has of her right now: tomboyish and somewhat impulsive. Her face wrinkled slightly at the thought – she thought that she’d matured over the last few years. She was hoping that she’d get to show off the fruits of her “training,” but… how would she be able to do that without changing her image? She was afraid that another perspective of her would somehow break their relationship. As if it weren’t breaking already. She was graced with a chance to patch it up, and she was going to do things right for once.
“Hmm,” she mused, in response to his questions. “Well, my schedule can be somewhat flighty – my manager’s pretty secretive and likes to jump on me about it. So, generally… any time she tells me I have a day off. Like today,” she said, “although I’m not saying we have to arrange some photo shoot today. I’ll see if I can save a free day for you… I’ll call you when it happens that I have some sort of free day.”
She paused slightly to let him catch it all in. Darn it! Why did her schedule have to be so unpredictable? It could be such a pain sometimes, especially to somebody like Piper, who liked her free time. Imagine having someone just barging in on you and telling you that you have to work for the whole day. It could really dampen your mood for the rest of the day, and it happened often to Piper. She would have to work on that. A lot.
“Ah, right. My number,” she perked up, and grabbed a napkin from on top of the table. “Uh…” Piper fumbled with her vest pocket – she was pretty sure she had some sort of writing utensil in there. “Ah. Yokatta, I still have it.” She pulled out a black Sharpie pen, and twirled it in the air, before proceeding to leave her name on the piece of napkin, before sliding it in Nate’s direction.
“That’s my number, so you can—”
Before she was able to speak some more, her words were unceremoniously interrupted by the loud ringing that was coming from her cell phone. She offered a sheepish smile in Nate’s direction, followed by a: “Speak of the devil. Excuse me, gomen ne.”
“Hello?”
A bunch of words later, she was fumbling with her things, getting up, and apologizing to Nate, saying, “I’m sorry, but it turns out that today wasn’t really a free day. Maybe,” she paused, looking out the window, seeing the car and a woman with an impatient look on her face. “Maybe we can talk about this later. I hate to leave like this, but I have to go. Until then.”
With that, Piper grabbed all of her meager belongings, and walked over to the door. Before she did, she took one last look behind her at Nate, feeling a flicker of light appear inside of her.
It was the flicker of a first love rekindled.
