This place was called the L.A. Zoo and Botanical Gardens, which implied they were a pair. Two in one, maybe, or... two attractions in one area. Something like that. Though to be honest, Sherry didn't exactly have any interest in one of the parts, specifically the garden part. Sure they were pretty and must have taken a lot of effort to make, which should be appreciated by visitors and tourists, but she was just not interested. Plants didn't move, and they weren't cute, nor did they do anything but grow and blossom. And maybe grow fruit, thought she wasn't sure if there was any fruit in these particular types of greenery.
No, the white haired girl's preference lied with the zoo part. The animals walked around, ate, were fluffy and usually adorable. "..." Okay well maybe not all of them were fluffy, necessarily, but they were all cute in some way! Grabbing a map of the zoo on her way in, the fourteen year old immediately unfolded it and looked around. Even if she'd already been here countless times, she still managed to get lost without some form of guidance. And that meant she could never find the animal she especially felt like seeing either. "Today... hm, let's see." Eyes scanning over the different habitats, she kept looking until one jumped out at her.
"Um... oh! Elephants sound like fun!" The small icon with an elephant's head looked particularly appealing, so it was decided she'd head there first. It was a bit in the back, a ways away, but that was what this map was for anyways. With this trusty guide, she couldn't possibly get lost. "Hm, so first I gotta take a right over this bridge..."
---
Apparently, she was almost there. Just around this corner, the map said the elephants would be right there! Spotting a sign close by, even that indicated Sherry was getting close to her destination. Elephants were so big, but so slow and peaceful looking, they were like gentle giants or something - or at least she thought she'd heard the term before. Maybe they'd be eating or even using their trunks when she got there, that would be super cool! Already grinning at the possibilities, blue eyes landed on where the anticipated gray creatures were supposed to be. Key word: supposed to be.
In place of a giant open area with one or two elephants was now an empty space with one sign tacked up across the fence. "The elephants... moved?!" The petite girl's entire expression fell, and her shoulders slumped. Seriously? They moved? Whyyy? Taking a look at her map again, there was absolutely no sign of anything having been modified. "This map is outdated...!" she realized, beginning to sulk. Holding it full out in front of her, Sherry heaved a heavy, dramatic sigh as she walked away from the place-that-used-to-have-elephants. Looks like she was going to have to roam around the zoo randomly, check out all the animals and try to find the elephants. "Though... I think I'm up for it. A little work to get what I want can't be all that bad!" Being optimistic was the best in situations like this after all, right?
With her new resolve, Sherry was just about to put the map away and follow some signs for once, until suddenly her face hit the map, and the middle schooler found herself stumbling backwards.. "Oof!" Did she just walk into someone...? If she did-
"Oh I'm so sorry!" Scrambling to fold the paper back up and get a better look at the poor person she'd run into, it just... wasn't folding! Getting more and more frustrated as the seconds passed, the white haired girl's actions became more frantic. What if the person decided to just leave while she was struggling with a stupid piece of paper?! Oh that'd be pathetic...
But giving up would be pathetic too. It shouldn't take too much longer...
[ooc: man this ended awkwardly buut I'm not comfortable addressing characters in an opening soo yeah hopefully it's not that bad >.< also my titles are obvs the best.]

A young boy with fairly short, brown hair was walking along the cobblestone path. He had one hand crammed into the pocket of his khaki shorts, and another one readjusting the collar of his red flannel shirt. The sun shone brightly, unobstructed by rogue clouds, leaving the temperature mild and warm. Canis’ lips were pursed in frustration as he pushed his sleeves past his elbows. A small bead of sweat trickled down the side of his cheek, and the boy wiped away the substance with a swift swipe of his arm.
I really need to stop wearing these kinds of clothes, he thought, recalling that one day where he almost succumbed to heatstroke because he stupidly wore a sweater to the beach. He shook his head at the mere thought and snagged the map that was hanging out of his breast pocket. Opening it up with one hand, his eyes lazily scanned the page, decorated with cute, iconic heads that indicated where each animal exhibit would be. His gaze left the paper and focused on his surroundings. The zoo was packed with numerous families, taking the day off to spend some time with their loved ones. The young boy looked down at his shoes when he realized that he would probably never be one of those people.
Tucking the zoo map back into the pocket of his shirt, he concluded that he was near the elephants that weren’t actually there—when he passed by the open area, he remembered being confused temporarily. The confusion was short-lived, however, when he also remembered that he didn’t actually care about the elephants. He didn’t even know why he was at the zoo—he tended to wander the streets of Los Angeles mindlessly, without any set destination in mind. He just wanted to stay away from his sorry excuse of a home.
He continued to walk for another minute or two, his head slowly swiveling from right to left as he observed the animals that he passed by, momentarily awed before moving on with life. He stifled a yawn, and decided that the zoo wasn’t worth it. However, as he spun around on his feet to leave, he felt himself bump into somebody else—the said person skittered backwards and fell on her tender rump.
The “her” being Sheryl, the annoying, white-haired girl that was too nosy for her own good.
As an immediate reflex, Canis let out a groan, slapping his hand against his forehead. He stared at the girl for another second, and uttered a quiet: “Sorry.” However, right after, he whirled right around, spinning on the balls of his feet and hastily began to retreat in the opposite direction.
Please don’t follow me, he thought in vain, even though a sixth sense told him the girl would follow him anyway.
(OOC: Please follow him.)

"Ha!" Finally, she got that pesky map to fold! Looking past the piece of paper and getting a better look at the person she'd walked right into, Sherry blinked as she caught a mere glimpse of their face before they hastily turned around and began walking away. Was that...
"Canis...?" she wondered aloud. He was here today? What a coincidence, and by himself no less. Standing there dumbly for a moment longer, it didn't take any thinking at all for her to decide to run after him to catch up. Luckily he hadn't bolted ahead, so it only took a few seconds at most.
"Hey Canis!" she called out. "Wait up would you?" She wouldn't put it past him to intentionally walk away immediately, but at least he hadn't outright run. And though she should have been more annoyed he tried to leave so fast in first place, that thought was overshadowed by the fact that now was the perfect chance to get to know him better, and work on that horrible attitude. He could even possibly help her find the elephants! He was around their former exhibit so maybe he was interested in them too.
Matching his pace eventually as she simply strolled alongside him, Sherry looped her arms behind her back as leaned forward a bit to look at the brunet's face as she spoke to him. "It's super cool we're here on the same day, isn't it? I never thought I'd see you at the zoo of all places, and by the elephants too!" He had to be here to have fun and all, so maybe he was in a good mood and that made him nicer? Was that possible? Sherry figured she'd test the waters.
"You looking for them? 'Cause I am and we could search together if you are! And even if you aren't being at a zoo by yourself is no fun so we could even do you want instead." Just letting Canis leave wouldn't be any good after all, not if she wanted to cure him of his rudeness or be his friend. And she supposed if it really came down to it she could drag him around if he wanted to leave, or even accompany him to wherever he left to instead. She was quite a determined girl if she did say so herself.

A low growl escaped the young boy’s lips as he realized that the girl had latched onto him—it was going to be a pain to get her off. He knew that he would be stuck with her for quite a while. He scratched the back of his head, his expression weary and haggard after exposure to white-haired girl stimulant.
“I said sorry, didn’t I? I don’t deserve punishment yet,” he sighed, raising his gaze heavenward and sending a glare up at any higher beings that happened to be watching the amusing episode. His eyes trailed to the girl beside him—she was matching his strides, and though her visage didn’t show it, he knew she was determined to follow through with whatever evil scheme she’d plotted to make his day grim. Of course, it was merely child’s play—all she had to do was walk alongside him to taint his countenance shades of grey.
“Cool? I wouldn’t say that. Freakin’ hot? Yes,” he replied, stripping from his red flannel shirt to reveal a black tank top underneath, looking rather odd in comparison with his skinny frame. Another bead of sweat trickled down the side of his face, painfully slow, resulting in a low curse under his breath. Canis’ day was growing dimmer by the minute. “Also, wandering the zoo on the same day as you is bad luck on my part,” he added, disturbed by the fact that his prior sentence lacked an adequate amount of harshness. He was also disturbed by the fact that he didn’t want to break into a wild sprint away from Sheryl.
He grumbled childishly. It was a coincidence. A coincidence, good lord. Just because he was by the elephants, or where they were, doesn’t mean that he was interested in them. He could have very well been walking past. Did you really have to have an interest to walk by something? Of course, as the thoughts ran through his head, he couldn’t help but wonder why they weren’t pouring out of his mouth.
In an act of defence, he said, “Being alone at a zoo is perfectly fine when the alternative is walking around with you.” If he were being honest, he’d admit that being alone at the zoo is pretty dreary. However, he didn’t allow his thoughts to be heard. All he said was, “If you’re going to stalk me all day, let’s go visit monkeys rather than search for elephants—they remind me of you.”
He didn’t have time to worry about the fact that he had actually invited the white-haired girl to do something because he was already beginning to walk faster. Resistance was futile, anyway.

She shouldn't have been surprised that the first thing out of Canis's mouth would be an insult. Unless... unless that apology from earlier counted. Then maybe not the first thing. More like one of the first things fit better. "But it wasn't even a good apology either. It might not matter after all." Though honestly whatever it was, it didn't change the fact he was as rude as ever. If he didn't correct that attitude, he was bound to get in big trouble some day, Sherry was sure.
It was only due to her previous experiences with dealing with the brunet that allowed the middle schooler to huff, pout, state "You haven't gotten any nicer, you know,"and leave it at that. Not that she could have expected a miraculous change, but just a little would have been nice. It wasn't like this was their first time meeting, right?
At his next comment, Sherry was about to give a retort back - something along the lines of "That wasn't what I meant and you know it!" - except how he decided to word it stopped her. Blue eyes widened in horror, and a sharp gasp escaped the girl's lips. "Canis," she said, "That's a bad word, don't say it! There are tons of other words you could have used! Don't make it into a bad habit, okay?" Swearing was just... it was just bad! They were words people weren't supposed to use but did]/s] and... and it just rubbed her the wrong way. Because how could you say something so casually?
Compared to that, his next biting remark had little to no effect. All that mattered was that they met, as far as she was concerned, and if he didn't like it then he didn't like it. "It was the less offensive version but... but still! The meaning was perfectly clear!" That was enough of a reason to get upset about it, she assured herself. Nonetheless, there was still the obligation to put in her two cents and keep away from obsessing over his slip up in vocabulary.
"Well in my opinion being with someone else at a zoo is much better. So I, for one, am glad I ran into you, Canis." As much as the elephants would have been great company, they simply couldn't match a person who could walk around and look at other animals with her. Of course she could have simply spent all her time watching them but... well that wasn't really something she could commit hours to, unfortunately.
"Hey I'm not stalking you!" she protested immediately. "And I am not not a monkey either!" She kept on following him towards the animals of his choice anyways. "Maybe I'll find a monkey that looks like him instead! He has monkey colored hair... because there aren't gray monkeys. Right?" She wasn't so sure. "Moneky's don't have long hair though! Canis has monkey hair too so he's the one that looks like a monkey more than me!" She was tempted to say this out loud, but the girl stopped herself before she could. It was best to wait until they actually arrived at said exhibit to make comparisons. Because it left little room for protest.

Canis lifted his chin and snorted derisively. “Freakin’? Honestly, I’ve been picky about what kind of words to use around you to receive less nagging, but if you’re going to be like that, I’m not going to get anywhere with my valiant efforts.”
He kicked a pebble across the cobblestone pathway, the stray rock banging into the wheel of a baby stroller. The woman pushing the stroller, a leery, obese woman with a pair of sunglasses on her head and a Hawaiian shirt shot him a stern look, double chins jiggling. Canis, stifling laughter, offered a sheepish nod in her direction and continued strolling leisurely, though his pace still managed to stray ahead of Sheryl. The chubby baby stuck out a sticky hand out towards Canis, who dodged it smoothly, wrinkling his face in disgust.
He snuck a look at the empty elephant pen, tuning out Sheryl for a tranquil moment, and was reminded of the horrid events that occurred at the dilapidated buildings. A divine being in a black dress radiating a bellicose, authorative aura, piercing eyes like sharp spears of ice, and a downpour of rain that would continue to remind him of the terrifying scene if he’d ever come into contact with a drop of water. The memories flooded back into his mind, an unrelenting black wave that would continue to plague him for as long as he lived. Feelings he wanted to forget, sanity he wanted to hold onto.
If there was one thing to note other than the negative, he’d felt stronger and more confident (if he ever got rid of the nagging feeling of horror that had latched onto him), his senses sharpening. He’d never felt so good physically. Still, the sound of a neck cracking like a whip haunted his dreams, the lifeless body of the woman, hanging like a rag doll continuing to fuel his nightmares. He’d often bolt upright in bed, a sweaty mess in the middle of the night.
He shook his head, paying more attention to the present and struggling to wriggle out of the dark, vise-like grip that was his mind. He decided that talking to Sheryl would be a better alternative to whatever it was lurked inside his imagination.
The pair neared the monkey exhibit, a small crowd of people watching with awed faces. Canis’ expression could be described as mute interest, smothered by his natural apathy and dampened by the presence of a certain white-haired girl. He shot a look at the girl. “See? Just like you.”
(OOC: Yeah, Canis is identified and I forgot about that. Whoooops.)

He's been picky about his words around her, but that didn't strike him as bad? She didn't even want to imagine how his "normal" speech must be. But if he at least tried to hold back, no matter what the reasons, she wouldn't need to hear it in real life at least. Though it still bothered her to imagine the people that did. "If only I could follow him around all the time, then at least I could try and control it." She acknowledged try was the key word, but it would be better than absolutely nothing at all. "He'll get better with time. I just can't give up and he'll give in soon enough!" She just had to keep that thought in mind and he'd improve eventually. Unfortunately at the moment she heightened her resolve, said brunet kicked a pebble across the path, which would normally be a harmless action. Except for when it hits the wheel of a stroller. Immediately casting a concerned glance over towards the woman pushing said object, she intended to scold Canis for doing such a thing because look what happened. But the sight of the woman's double chins shaking as she turned to glare at them made her falter. Her hand flew to cover her mouth, and she ended up sputtering despite her best efforts to hold back her laughter. "Canis-!" Her attempt to yell at him for kicking the pebble was put off once again, due to another bout of giggles threatening to escape from her mouth. The hand that reached out towards him wasn't so much funny in itself as the imagine of him having to deal with a clinging kid. A kid younger than himself, at least. When they were well past the unfortunate stroller, she finally gained control of herself and said, "You really shouldn't have done that, you know. Be more careful, someone could have gotten hurt!" Waiting a few seconds, she didn't exactly get a response. Crossing her arms and glaring at the back of his head childishly, she passed it off as him being rude again. "Oh fine, if he's going to be like that then I'll make sure to find a monkey that looks just like him! I'll even start calling the monkey Canis, that'll show him." At the moment she didn't feel like conquering his silent treatment with a barrage of questions and useless statements. She'd make up for it when they arrived at the monkeys. And after a few turns plus some sign reading, they did. The first thing Canis thought to note was that they were just like her. "They are not!" On a split second decision, she reached for his ears and tugged at them, making them look more like a monkey's straight forward ones compared to humans' angled. "You're the monkey, see?" And she wasn't just saying it. With his ears more defined, and the shade of his hair, you could see the monkey-ness. More than in herself, at least, which was the important part. She didn't dare look over and check for any gray monkeys though, to prove herself wrong. [ooc: so uh I just figured if you needed reference, Canis's ears probably look something like this, except he's not the one pulling his own ears and probably not making that expression either] | [atrb=width,113][atrb=valign,top]
