[style=float: left; margin-right: 8px; border: 3px solid #F0EEE9; margin-bottom: 4px][/style]April 10, 2012
It’s been a while.
Piper stood smack dab in the middle of the place that was known to house animals of all kinds, where they were placed into cages for one sole purpose: for others to look, point and stare at them. She remembered having mixed feelings about the zoo. Having been there more than once as a child, she often marveled at the sight of the majestic lions, the large elephants, the graceful panthers, the funny monkeys… anything, really, wouldn’t cease to amaze her. On one side of the argument, they were beautiful and worthy of being admired.
On the other hand, it was cruel to keep them away from their natural habitat just so that humans could stare at them and wonder. They didn’t deserve it, and Piper knew that she wouldn’t like it if she were the one in the cage being stared at. It’d make her extremely uncomfortable, and it was at that young age where she pondered hypocrisy. She was a hypocrite. Heck, anybody who liked believed animals had rights yet enjoyed the zoo were hypocrites, according to her.
Looking back, a tight smile appeared on her face as she recalled her naïve thoughts about the world. A sigh escaped parted lips. Sometimes, one would wish to revert back to their child days. Her perspective had become more rational over time. Humans were disgusting creatures who were capable of doing beautiful things, and every once in a while, a pure one would appear, the diamond in the rough. She was most certainly not one of those diamonds.
She placed a hand on the cold, glass cage that separated her body from the large orangutan that bored holes into her sublime figure. A bead of sweat trickled down her cheek as she stared back at it, a look of sheepish surprise, and then, nervous amusement. A few people around her had also noticed this and were chuckling quietly, the small children holding on to their mothers’ arms pointing at the orangutan and then at her. It was a strange situation.
She giggled anxiously along with the rest of the mini crowd as the large ape’s gaze remained transfixed on the woman.
… This was awkward.

Really, she had had no intention whatsoever to go to the zoo; she had honestly been on her way to the park for a walk and to explore. But somewhere along the way, she had somehow stumbled across the zoo. The dark-haired female wasn't going to go in, but just a glance at all the happy children that entered the place and the sound of animals managed to drag her inside.
Walking around without a single care in the world, Nemi happily took in the sights of all the animals. The first place she stopped by was where the tigers were kept. The striped felines of course had many children staring in awe as she approached them. She really did have to admit that she admired the tigers for being fiercely beautiful creatures. They were strong predators that were both revered and feared by many, capable of putting up a fight while still remaining utterly beautiful. And it was times like these that she wished she could be just like the tigers and so many other felines; she wished she could be powerful and stunning like them.
Pushing those silly little thoughts out of her mind, she continued to wander around within the zoo. Spotting the primates and other related creatures, Nemi casually walked over after purchasing a water bottle. As she got closer, she noticed a small crowd around what she assumed to be one of the cages. Curiosity got the better of her then, so she joined the crowd and tried to squeeze to the front. However, someone bumped into her and ended up knocking her down. But that wasn't where her attention was.
The water bottle she had bought only moments ago was now flying in the air towards a girl that apparently was having a staring contest with an orangutan. She was horrified when the bottle smacked the girl in the head, instantly crawling to her feet and approaching the girl. "I am so sorry! I didn't mean for that to happen! Are you alright? You aren't bleeding or anything like that are you?" Nemi spoke rapidly, her expression clearly stating her sorry and worry. The very last thing she wanted was for someone to get hurt because of her. She just felt so horrible about the whole thing.
Hopefully the girl didn't get too mad, but the black-haired woman wasn't going to hold her breath on it. [/style] |

[style=float: left; margin-right: 8px; border: 3px solid #F0EEE9; margin-bottom: 4px][/style]The bottle of water flew towards Piper.
She didn’t see it coming – she could only react when the bottle hit her square on the head. For a moment, all she could see were stars. There was a splash of something attacking her skin, making her feel extremely cold, saturated, and uncomfortable. She instinctively cringed, ignoring the fact that she was wet for a moment and bringing her hands up to her head and grasping them wildly as if that were a method of dulling the pain. However, the pain slowly receded, and she was left with only a dull throbbing. She was finally aware of what was going on, and she looked up, blinked, and turned to the woman who was showering her with apologies and assuring that her health was up to speed. She didn’t say anything at first, only acknowledging the fact that she was soaked, and the frigid cold that came with it slowly overtaking her senses. However, she forced herself to smile at the woman, merely nodding her head. She was fine. All was well.
“I’m all right,” she stated, almost uncannily calm. The scene that had presented itself had yet to be seriously acknowledged by Piper, who was in the midst of attempting to console the woman. “I’m fine! Everything’s under control. Not bleeding, nada.” She smiled reassuringly, and then went back to inspect her saturated apparel. As expected, her outfit was ruined. However, this didn’t cause any bitter resentment towards the woman. Actually, she felt pretty happy. Her yellow, woolen sweater was most certainly uncomfortable, yes, and her hair stuck to her face. She swiped at them, more annoyed at the elements of nature rather than the girl.
Suddenly, Piper began to laugh. The fact that the woman was so up-tight and worried, mixed in with the fact that she now looked like a complete moron was what triggered the unconventional response, and she found that the remains of the crowd chimed in.
Her giggles trailed off as the scene became dull to the spectators, who gradually diminished until it was just Piper and the woman. She wiped away tears from her eyes, the occasional snort escaping from her lips.
“Your… your face. It’s priceless,” she stated, grinning. “I don’t mind in the slightest.” She paused, wondering how to fix the dilemma. Obviously the woman was sorry for what she did, even though she didn’t really have anything to be sorry for. Piper decided that she could spend some of the day with her.
“Hey, why don’t we get a drink and chat? My companionship will be your punishment for the accident.” She grinned at the woman once more, which by now should’ve signified that she really didn’t care.

However, she was pretty much expecting for the brunette to start berating her for her clumsiness or stupidity or whatnot, but no. Instead of sounding the least bit annoyed or infuriated, the woman was deathly calm and that confused the hell out of the black-haired femme. Well, this is highly unusual, she noted, only to be broken out of her thoughts a second later.
Was the woman... laughing? And grinning too? Did the water bottle hit her that hard? Nemi wondered for a brief moment before shooting the brunette a sheepish smile. If she had been laughing at her face, she figured she must've had a very stupid look adorning her features. Really, no one had ever really laughed at her face before, so having it done to her right in this moment was a little odd. What was she supposed to do, laugh?
"I just hit you with my water bottle and you want to chat with me?" the ink-haired woman questioned, completely baffled by the woman's "punishment." Honestly, she had not only hit her, but from what Nemi could tell, she had also ruined the woman's outfit. But still, she wanted to hang around with her and chat. It was highly unusual yes, but at this point, she was in no position to reject the woman.
"Um, but I guess I owe you at least that much. I did ruin your outfit and hit you, after all," she stated nervously, scratching the back of her head for a moment due to sheepish embarrassment. "Ah, my name is Nemesis, but you can call me Nemi for short. And although this isn't exactly the best of circumstances, it's nice to meet you. I also hope you do forgive me for my clumsiness... I really didn't mean for that to happen."
Yup, she was apologizing again, but it was something Nemi couldn't exactly get over. Most people would be raging at her and everything, yet here this girl was, laughing and pretty calm. And she's really pretty too, the indigo-eyed female observed, offering the brunette a friendly smile. Hopefully all would go well after this. [/style] |

[style=float: left; margin-right: 8px; border: 3px solid #F0EEE9; margin-bottom: 4px][/style]As Piper waited for a coherent reply, she picked at the wet strands of hair that could now be described as a mop, twirling it around her finger and leaning on one leg. Her face probably looked moronic – lucky for her; she refused to put on makeup when going out as an average Joe.
“’Course! Well, not that that’s a legitimate reason; none of my reasons are legitimate. I’m kind of weird like that,” she chirped jovially, flashing an optimistic grin at the woman who was responsible for getting her wet. “But rather, I’ve been meaning for company, and, well, the perfect opportunity struck. Again, probably not the best opportunity, but what can you do? I don't know what to do next, and going to the zoo by yourself is not the greatest thing in the world.” Piper shrugged nonchalantly, lifting her shoulders and bringing them down. A wry grin danced across her visage as she added, “You probably think I’m the biggest weirdo in the world, don’t you?”
Before she could reply, she dismissed the thought with a very impish wave of her hand. “I don’t mind – I get that a lot from my manager.” She paused, placing a placid finger on her pink lips, realizing that she was stealing any chances for the black woman to speak. A sheepish grin directed towards her, she allowed her to state her name.
Nemesis, she thought. It’s a beautiful name.
“Isn’t that the name of a Greek goddess?” she asked peaceably, trying to strike up a conversation that would apply to Nemi. Nemesis, the Greek goddess of revenge. Funny, she doesn’t seem like a spiteful person. As she was about to speak once more, her eyes widened slightly as she remembered something. “Ah, I forgot! The name’s Piper. Funny name, huh?” She chuckled to herself, bringing her right hand to her lips, her hair bouncing as she laughed at her own name. Frankly, she loved it, even though she tended to make fun of it in front of other people.
The brunette paused, twirling her drenched hair once more. She pursed her lips, her brows furrowing together in concentration as she attempted to remember the location of a fast food restaurant she’d seen before coming here, but to no avail. “Darn,” she said softly, more to herself than to Nemi. “I can’t seem to remember where we might eat. Sorry, we might have to look for it… unless you’ve got a better sense of direction than I do?”

She still couldn't get over the fact that she had ended up hitting the girl in the head with her water bottle and wet her, but she still wanted her to accompany her. However, she could understand her in a way that she was requesting her company as she didn't have anything better to do. That was definitely a better explanation to this whole nonsense, but the black-haired femme couldn't help but think the girl was a little bit odd.
But everyone was odd in there own way, weren't they? Her included.
Although this brunette had taken a chance to speak away from her, Nemesis couldn't help but give her a smile. She definitely was a talkative one, but she didn't mind in the slightest. Her talking and all helped balance this out; the indigo-eyed woman was usually the quiet one when it came to conversations to strangers. Just giving her input to the things the brunette was talking about her was enough.
"Nice to meet you, Piper," she chirped in her usual gentle tone, presenting her a warm smile. "And I actually quite like your name. It's sort of bright in a way, and you seem to be a person with a sunny disposition. Ah, and yes. My father is a bit crazy when it comes to Greek mythology. My mother's name is Athena after all," Nemi hummed in quiet amusement as she came to a stop next to Piper. Why had they stopped? Oh, she didn't know where they were going. And now she was asking her to if she had a better sense of direction.
The jet-haired femme burst into a bout of laughter, shaking her head and smiling. "It's nice to know I'm not the only one with a bad sense of direction. I get lost quite often, and it makes my boyfriend quite worried over me because of it. So I guess we'll have to look for it."

[style=float: left; margin-right: 8px; border: 3px solid #F0EEE9; margin-bottom: 4px][/style]The raven-haired woman remained complacent throughout the bouts of her palaver, offering Piper some quality companionship and a balance in personalities. A quiet thrill of pleasure ran through her veins as she realized that Nemi wasn’t the type of person to judge, nor be vexed by her seemingly overbearing persona. Piper hummed quiet amusement to herself; she didn’t think she was overly talkative. Of course, a few people begged to differ. She didn’t know why—she was feeling awfully chipper, and rather than taking the overly saturated apparel with anger, she thought it was… kind of funny.
Piper cordially nodded in a likewise gesture to Nemi’s friendly advances, thinking that it would be appropriate to clamp her jaw shut for a few moments to allow her to keep up her end of the conversation. The flamboyant woman couldn’t help the peachy grin that decorated her visage when the black-haired woman displayed a positive interest in her alias, her countenance soaring and her ego inflating. I guess at least some people appreciate my over-the-top name, she thought, tickled pink.
The brunette chuckled good-naturedly at her father’s antics, saying: “Cool parents. Wish I had a bunch of interesting folks behind my back. Mine’s are your average, rugged Filipinos. Working on farms and whatnot.” Piper was exaggerating—her parents were doing fine… somewhere that was not in Los Angeles. When she came to entertain the thought, she actually didn’t know much about how her parents were doing. She’d have to check on them later today. Perhaps a surprise call would delight them. “And I can’t blame your father either—Greek mythology can be pretty intense, and nothing if not entertaining. If there was one Greek goddess I couldn’t take, it’d probably be… Aphrodite? I don’t know—she seems like the ‘femme fatale’ type.” She offered a smile in Nemi’s direction. “Athena’s wonderful, though.” Piper chose to not dwell on the origin of Nemi’s name, not sure if it would offend her or not.
When the female began to laugh, Piper had no choice but to giggle along with her—laughter was contagious, according to the brown-haired woman. “So that makes two of us. I can do with that,” she stated, scouring the map in search of clues that would signal a restaurant nearby. The grey, cobblestone walkways were littered with people. “So…” she started, concluding her little scouting session, “we can start off by going in… this direction?” She shrugged to herself, and began to walk.
“Hmm. Any other family members with cool names, or is it just you and your mother?” she asked, not trying to pry, but to come up with fuel for a conversation that Nemesis might be comfortable with.

THE WAR OUTSIDE KEEPS RAGING ON HOLD ON TO THIS LULLABY . . . EVEN WHEN THE MUSIC'S GONE — ! ❞ It would've probably been a splendid thing to have a gps device on her seeing as she and Piper were now lost and just wandering around in search of this restaurant. Of course, Nemi had had no intention of going somewhere to eat when she had wandered by the zoo. Then again, she hadn't exactly been planning to hit a girl with her water bottle due to tripping. Life sure was wonderful when it came to throwing the unexpected in your face, wasn't it?
Following after the brunette, the indigo-eyed femme kept her smile on as she matched the girl's strides. "Ah, I don't think I would've minded if my father had called me something else other than "Nemesis," but there's not much I can do about that. And I don't think I'd be able to handle being called "Aphrodite" either," she laughed lightly, glancing at the people on the sidewalk as they went along. "But, uh, my brother's name is Perseus. He was originally going to be called Dionysus after the Greek god of wine. But somehow, he got somewhat lucky and was called Perseus instead. I think my mother had something to do with that since my father is such a fanatic for mythological names. So, there are three of us with unusual names in my immediate family. The only other person I could think of that has an unusual name is my adopted cousin."
The dark-haired female took a moment to reflect upon what Piper said of her own family, growing intrigued by the girl's background. "So, you're from the Philippines? How interesting! So how exactly did you get to be in Los Angeles?" she asked with thinly veiled interest, taking notice of a restaurant not too far ahead. "Ah, I also believe that's the place you were talking about, right?" questioned the indigo-eyed woman while pointing a finger at the establishment's location.
Despite the fact that Nemi had originally thought that bumping into the poor girl and ruining her clothes was a horrible thing, she couldn't help but admit that she was enjoying the girl's company. They seemed to be becoming fast friends, so that was never a bad thing, right? Besides, she needed more friends in L.A., so she would happily accept Piper as a friend.

Piper’s eyes lit up. The sudden brightening of her countenance would tell most that she was pleased that somebody had shown a genuine interest in her ethnicity. She tilted her head lovingly, recalling her past.
“Actually, I wasn’t born in the Philippines—my parents were. They’re both pretty awesome,” she explained patiently, chuckling affectionately. “I was born here, in Los Angeles. Of course, I’ve been to the Philippines more than once. It’s a really wonderful place. The sun’s constantly shining—granted, it can get pretty hot, but a beach is usually a ten minute walk away.”
She grinned to herself as a faint memory bobbed to the surface—a little girl, about five or six, her long, brown hair sticking to her skin, shiny with sweat. However, she was smiling, as happy as could be—her smile seemed to stretch across her face. The young girl was hand-in-hand with her parents, treading gingerly on a dirt path that would eventually take the trio to a beach.
“A really great place,” she restated, looking down at her feet. Sometimes, the woman wished that she could just fly away to the beach paradise and forget about the hustle and bustle of the big city—her job, for instance. She grimaced slightly at the thought of it, her nose wrinkling at the thought of having to pose in front of another camera the following day. She waved the air to her side, as though she could make the bad thought disappear with a gesture of dismissal, and lifted the corners of her lips. She refused to allow her career to bring down her spirits, no matter how self-conscious she felt about it.
She was brought out of her thoughts by the sound of the black-haired woman’s voice. Nemi pointed in the direction of a convenient fast-foot restaurant—Piper squinted in the direction Nemi’s finger was pointing, and nodded in acknowledgement. “Great! We can stop there for a bite to eat.”
Taking the lead, the brunette ambled towards the door and pushed it open with both hands, and, finding a quiet table for two, plopped herself down on a seat. She gestured ceremoniously to the spot in front of her, across the table. “Over here, over here.”
