tagged: FAILTWIN time: May 5th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: still can't believe i got you to join. Aww man, he hated it when people were late!
Hayden sighed, leaning back against the trunk of the large tree that he was sitting under, before deciding that the rough bark was a little too uncomfortable and leaning forward instead, sticking his hands by his sides to support his weight. Sticking his lower lip out slightly, the swimmer heaved a sigh, glancing at the group of children playing in the distance, their tinkling laughter filling the air.
"Oh well," he muttered under his breath. It probably wasn't Julie's fault that she was late, so he felt a little bad for being disappointed. But it was okay, Hayden supposed. He could just sit here and enjoy the view before she arrived, right? The thought made him quirk a smile, and he picked up his cell phone, texting back an 'It's okay!' to her before setting the iPhone next to him again. Besides, he just had to look on the bright side of things, didn't he? For instance, the fact that he already had a friend of sorts.
He'd met Julie while they'd both been at the gym. It had been a simple meeting, really-- he'd been on the last exercise bike, she'd arrived to find them all used up, so he'd hopped off to let her have a go. She'd seemed surprised by the gesture, but he was content to go off and do something else, and he thought that that was where it would end... Until they'd run into each other in front of the water cooler. Words were exchanged and so were names, and before he knew it they were having dinner together and talking about their lives. Hayden didn't know whether she was secretly a serial murderer or something, but she seemed nice. That had to count for something, didn't it? And now she had agreed to show him around Los Angeles, Hayden couldn't be more grateful.
He just hoped she turned up soon, he thought as he leaned back once again, before jolting forward. Ugh, did he never seem to learn?

Okay, look, it wasn't her fault, really! Julie had accidently slept in, which... technically was her fault, since she had stayed up all night (and well into the morning) watching some awful horror movie with her boyfriend- alright alright, so maybe it was her fault, but she really hadn't meant to keep him waiting, honest! It had all been an accident, so hopefully he'd forgive her. Hayden certainly seemed like the forgiving type, with all his bright smiles and innocent eyes.
She had taken a shine to the cute boy right away, as 1.) he hadn't leered and/or flirted with her at the gym, and 2.) he reminded her of herself, in a way. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but something about Hayden in the time since they had met made her want to look out for him; to protect him, and make sure he didn't get into too much trouble. Julie didn't ask or pry, but she'd be lying if she said she wasn't interested in the boy's past. Something told her that they had a lot more in common than either of them were aware.
But enough of that, she was running late! The blonde let out a sigh as she fussed with her ponytail, trotting down the sidewalk and keeping an eye out for the tall brunette. They had agreed to meet around here somewhere, she just wasn't sure where exactly- AH. Julie grinned at the sight of Hayden sitting in the grass under a tree, watching a group of kids playing in the distance. Not that he was a pedophile or anything, please. Hayden was practically a kid himself, a puppy who just wanted to please everyone.
Which made teasing him so much more fun.
Her grin grew marginally wider, a wicked gleam entering her eyes as an idea began to form. Oh yes, within the short amount of time she had come to know Hayden Green, she had found that he was an all too easy target. Stepping off the sidewalk and walking lightly across the grass, Julie snuck around the back of Hayden's tree, remaining completely out of sight of the boy. It wouldn't do to give herself away, after all. Placing her bag on the ground first, she hoisted herself up into the branches, climbing up into the leaves. She was glad she had decided against wearing a dress today, that's for sure; she shimmied onto the branch above Hayden's head, cleared her throat, and stage-whispered, in her best rasping wheeze, "Haaayden, HaaaAAAaaaydeeen~"
Nobody could possibly fall for something like this, but it'd be good for a laugh, right?

tagged: FAILTWIN time: May 5th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: omg. It was just another warm sunny day right? Nothing out there could have possibly happened to Julie. She wasn't going to be eaten by sharks or kidnapped by supervillians or something on the way to where they were, so Hayden was just going to have to wait. Unless, of course, she had been eaten or kidnapped in which case... Oh noooo. Hayden shook his head. There he was, letting his imagination get the better of him again. Think happy thoughts, Hayden, think--
Wait, what was that sound?
Hayden immediately glanced upwards into the branches of the tree, eyes widening with panic and jaw practically dropping to the floor. Someone was calling him. Someone up there. He didn't know who or what it was but it couldn't be good, could it? Lifting a hand towards his mouth so he could cup it, he yelled up into the treetop.
"J- Julie?" he asked, the second syllable coming out ten pitches higher than the first. "Is that- is that you up there?" It had to be, right? It couldn't be anybody else. It wasn't as though ghosts were real, or anything of the like. No way, no way at all--
No way at all...
Right-- right!

O-Oh no, he... he actually fell for it... oh nooo.....
Actually, she wasn't that morally conflicted over this. She grinned at the hitch in his voice as he called her name, the note of panic as he stared up into the canopy of branches and leaves shielding her from discovery. Don't get her wrong, she loved Hayden and thought he was the cutest thing since baby animal videos on Youtube, but let's face it, she couldn't resist playing a joke on someone who was practically asking for it. Besides, it was all in good fun! Just a teeny tiny joke, then she'd reveal herself and take him on that tour of LA like she promised.
But for now:
"Nooo Hayden, this is the spirit of the girl who died under this very treeeee." She had to bite her lip to stop herself from bursting into giggles as she spoke, but she managed to keep quiet. "Haaaydeeen, I need you to avenge my death so that I can finally rest in peaceeeee." She glanced up and swept her gaze around the park, hurredly trying to find something appropriate to avenge a dead girl's spirit with. How do you even die under a tree in a public park in the middle of LA to begin with, anyway? Really, dead Julie, you needed to think these things through better.
"Iii neeeeed youuu tooo... collect all the quarters out of the fountaaaaaaain."
Yup. Nailed it.

Hayden actually felt a chill rush up his spine, and bright greens darted around, hoping to see someone, anyone that could potentially be the source of the noise-- but to no avail. The brunette gulped, hoping that he would swallow his fear, trying to ignore the thumping in his chest. This had to be some sort of joke, didn't it? Ghosts didn't exist. He was gullible, but his exposure to his friends back home should have taught him some sort of common sense. There were things that he should have learned by now, and this was most definitely one of them. If he couldn't survive a little prank like this, he couldn't survi--
"Nooo Hayden, this is the spirit of the girl who died under this very treeeee."
"W- what?"
Hayden yelped, almost leaping backwards in shock. Okay, now this was actually getting creepy. He'd heard stories of possessed trees back when he still had the time to go browsing around Wikipedia for the fun of it, and it was apparently an urban legend in Malaysia and Singapore. Now, he wasn't superstitious-- not really, anyway-- but he knew all too well that there was always some element of truth to every myth. He didn't believe in ghosts, but spirits could most definitely be a thing. Best to play it safe and--
"Iii neeeeed youuu tooo... collect all the quarters out of the fountaaaaaaain."
"But that's illegal!" he yelped, a little too loudly for his liking. If he had been any more observant, he would have noticed the children turning around to stare at him, a little girl pointing and laughing at the funny man who was shouting at a tree. One of the other children was spinning his indox finger in circles by his head, indicating that he was crazy. Hayden, on the other hand, seemed to have forgotten all sense for the moment. "W- what if I get caught?" Recollect yourself, Hayden, recollect yourself!

She half-wondered if any normal person would be feeling at least a little guilty by now. (Then again, a normal person probably wouldn't have climbed up into a tree in order to prank sweet, innocent Hayden.) The poor kid was obviously pretty freaked out, but all she could do was try not to laugh and keep the charade going just a bit longer. Really, she was going to stop soon, cross her heart. She just needed to leave him with some parting words, maybe scare the piss out of him a little more. You know, no big deal.
"Then don't get caught." Had she said that a little too bluntly? It was true though, 'it wasn't illegal if you didn't get caught!' was her motto. It's what she and her best friend practically lived by, and given their tendency to sneak off at 4 AM to go on early morning adventures, it was a good thing they did. It was a miracle they hadn't been arrested yet, to be perfectly honest.
Clearing her throat and readjusting herself slightly on her perch, Julie rasped out, "If you do not complete this task for me, I will haunt you for the rest of your lifeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. You'll never sleep again, and everything you eat will taste like..." Crap, what was the worst possible thing you could eat in the entire world--- "Toenails." Aww yeah. "Complete this task within the next hour, and you shall be spareeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed." She turned her face away and held up a hand to her mouth, trying so hard not to laugh and give herself away. This was just too great- she was going to have to apologize to Hayden after this for sure.

tagged: FAILTWIN time: May 5th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: omg. To be perfectly honest, Hayden was the perfect target for any normal person out there. How any sane person would be able to resist trying to prank him, we have no idea, but then again, one's definition of sane differs from person to person. And even Hayden could probably tell by now that Julie was definitely not in the category of sane people.
"How am I not supposed to get caught, though?" Hayden gulped. It seemed crazy! They were in broad daylight, weren't they? How was he supposed to get away with anything like this? Thoughts of running away raced through his mind, and he swallowed once again. No, he needed to get down to the bottom of this. He still wasn't sure whether he believed in whatever was going on, but he had to admit, there was some sort of possibility that it could be true. You never knew when it came to the world. He wished he had Leon on hand to answer his question all of a sudden-- Leon knew everything.
"Toenails? You- you've got to be joking!" Hayden cringed. Not that he knew what toenails tasted like (ewwww), but it didn't sound like a very pleasant kind of taste to him at all. He groaned, shuddering. Now he really did have to go into the fountain, just in case, but he didn't want to. He wasn't going to let himself get arrested a few days into his new life. The conflict, though: on one hand he was 60% sure that this was some sort of cruel joke, but on the other hand what if there really was a spirit up there?
Okay, he supposed it wouldn't hurt. Or well, it wouldn't hurt... Much. Only his dignity and pride was at stake now, no big deal, and when compared to the vengeance of a dead little girl. He had a lot less to lose than she did. Worse came to worst for him, he would just become a laughing stock; worse came to worst for her, and she would never be at rest. Ever.
"Julie, if this is you, this isn't funny." Hayden crossed his arms and huffed. "But if it isn't you, don't I get some sort of invisibility? Some sort of protection while I carry out this task?"

"I don't know, I'm dead," she retorted, her voice full of a little too much snark and not enough spookiness. Err, hopefully he'd overlook that. Shoot, and she had been doing so well, too. Oh well, it was about time she wrapped this up and got this show on the road- she was kind of curious to see if he'd actually follow through on this or not. Julie wasn't sure if she wanted him to or not.
Clearing her throat slightly, Julie continued, a smile curling her lips, "The deaaad do not joooOOoke Hayden Greeeeen~" She paused at his question, frowning for only a moment, before replying, flatly, "No. You have one houuuur, so don't mess uuuuup." Apparently she wasn't the most benevolent of ghosts, but then again, she wasn't exactly the most benevolent of people. Woops!
But seriously, it was about time she ended this. This little game had been going on quite long enough, thank you very much. Even though she was the one to blame for all this to begin with... "I must go now, purgatory awaits. Avenge me Hayden, avenge meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee~" She waited for a few seconds, letting the quiet draw out, before wiggling her way back out of the tangle of branches, landing on the ground with a soft thud. Julie quickly brushed the leaves off her shirt and picked the twigs out of her hair, walking back across the grass and onto the sidewalk. She tried not to grin too hard as she skipped across the pavement, entering Hayden's line of sight and waving at him.
She was a terrible human being.
"Hey! I'm so, so sorry for the wait, what's up?" She asked with a sunny smile, eyes glittering merrily at the expression on Hayden's face. She frowned in mock concern, a delicate brow rising upwards as she asked, a little too innocently, "Are you okay? You looked like you've seen a ghost." That was awful and she should feel awful, but for whatever reason Julie didn't really mind at all.

tagged: FAILTWIN time: May 5th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: omg. He needed some sort of assurance, some hint that this was going to be real before he went and did something stupid in public. Which was why the brunette blinked at the suddenly different tone in the first sentence, lifting a hand to scratch the back of his head. Now this was starting to get weird. Wasn't there some sort of clause in ghostland that they had to be all mysterious and cool and... Well, scary? That almost sounded sarcastic. And somewhat familiar. However, his train of thought was cut short by a declaration that purgatory awaited, and before he knew it, he heart the sharp rustling of leaves, and the sound of someone fading away into the distance.
"Wait. Wait--"
Or at least, what was supposed to be the sound of someone fading into the distance. Hayden frowned. He was certain that leaving this mortal plane was supposed to involve the tinkling of bells or a sound that was equally ominous, not a sudden loud thud on the ground, but still, she was gone, wasn't she? After all, the swimmer didn't know anything about the afterlife, so there was no being certain. He shuddered. On one hand, he had a feeling that he was being pranked. But on the off chance that this wasn't just a joke... He didn't want to risk the possibility of toenails for eternity. Eww. Hayden gulped.
Better he do it now than never, right? It wouldn't hurt if he didn't get caught. Besides, he was one of the few people around now. The children had all run off screaming at the "crazy man", and there was only a half-deaf elderly couple sitting by the fountain talking ridiculously loudly about the weather. Hopefully they wouldn't see him if he went in, he thought as he headed towards the fountain. Maybe nobody would ever speak of this again.
"Julie?!"
Hayden almost leaped out of his skin as he noted the girl's arrival. She- how had she mentioned that he'd seen a ghost? Was that even possible? Had she seen it too?
"I-- I-- Was that you?" he asked. "Because if it wasn't you, we've got to go into the fountain! I've got a mission to complete, so just wait by the side, I'll go into this and collect all the coins out of the fountain."

She had to hold in a snicker as he stuttered out a question, asking her if she was the ghost. Better play dumb for now; she cocked her head to one side, and fixed him with a questioning look. "Was what me?" If Hayden knew her a little better, he might have caught the amused gleam in her eyes, but thankfully the boy didn't know her well enough to read her like a book. (Like some people, who could call her out on her bluffs with ease. But even they sucked at it- HEY back on topic!)
Julie fixed her gaze on the small fountain in the center of the park, a bemused smile now curling her lips as she asked, her tone implying nothing but innocence, "Into the fountain...? Isn't that illegal?" And if it wasn't illegal, it would surely be frowned upon. She wasn't going to actually let him get into the fountain though, so there was nothing to worry about there.
Unless she decided to let him go through with this anyway. Wait what-
The blonde turned back to the tall brunette, squinting up at him. "Are you high?" She finally asked completely deadpan, even though she was having to stop herself from bursting out laughing.

She sounded innocent, almost too innocent, and it was a sense of knowing that he couldn't quite place, as though he had known someone as guilty as she inevitably was in the past. But her expression seemed so bemused and curious that he immediately dismissed it. She wouldn't do that to him, not so soon after they'd first met, would she?
"It's illegal, yeah..."She did have a good point there. Hayden tapped his chin. "But either I do this, or someone might not ever be avenged. I don't know how it's ever going to avenge her but the spirit of the girl in the tree told me to do it, and it's better to play it safe and to follow, right? Just in case it's real!" Completely ignoring Julie's claim that he might be high, Hayden marched towards the fountain, ready to walk in. The old couple were staring at the two of them with raised eyebrows now, and Hayden turned towards Julie with a sad, sad smile.
"I don't want to risk it. I'm not sure if I believe it either, but you never know." Weird things did happen, after all, and he did believe in a soul. After all, that was what made them all so much more human.

He was serious.
He was dead serious.
How could such a darling child fall in league with such an evil adult like her? It was just awful, and Julie actually felt a pang of _. She should be ashamed of herself, taking advantage likepffft sorry, couldn't finish that sentence. She did feel pretty bad though, especially after that sad smile he shot her before he faced the fountain.
Hayden was too sweet for his own good, that was for sure. If a voice in a tree could convince him to do something as ridiculous as this, she shuddered to think what other people might do. She was just having some fun, but what if she had actually talked him into doing something dangerous? At least she was going to stop him from going through with this, but now that she saw firsthand just how willing the boy was to believe in everyone and everything, she was a little worried about the kid.
Just as he was about to step into the water, Julie finally broke. Grabbing his hand, she laughed, saying, "Hayden Hayden Hayden, I was the ghost in the tree, you don't have to go fishing for quarters!" She led him several steps away from the edge, as if she was afraid he was going to carry on with his mission. "I'm sorry, I didn't think you'd do it," She met his eyes and shot him a grin. "My bad."

It wasn't as though there was much of a chance that he would get arrested, anyway. There didn't seem to be many people, or even police around. He'd just collect the coins, and... well, he didn't know what he was supposed to do with them, but he continued marching on. Julie or no Julie, he had a task to complete. He had just passed a sign saying 'No Fishing or Wading' when she suddenly spoke again, and Hayden whirled around.
And all of a sudden, he felt like he had been punched in the chest.
"Oh."
The brunette literally collapsed onto the ground in a dramatic motion, one hand still clenched in her grip, but the other covering his face in shame. He had... Actually believed her. The events of the last ten minutes or so ran through his mind once again, and he shook his head from side to side. He had somehow managed to buy it. Somehow managed to believe a story like that. Hayden could feel his face turning pinker and pinker with each passing second. What kind of a first impression was that, anyway? Or well, second impression, if he was going to show her a side of him like this?
It was stupid, so stupid. His sister had probably been right, he wasn't ready for this. What if she had tried to get him to do something dangerous, or something that could actually have gotten him killed? Well, at least that was a lesson learned: no more listening to ghosts or weird beings or monsters of any kind, even if they were really rooted in legend. Or at least, no listening to them if they were telling him to do something dangerous. Not again, never again!
"How... How in the world did I believe that?" he asked, removing his palm from his face and glancing up at Julie. "I'm so sorry. You must think I'm really gullible and naive too. And maybe I am but I kind of believed it but not really and I just didn't want the spirit in the tree to not be avenged, you never know with these things, I just..." Actually, he didn't even know. Hayden got up onto his feet, shaking his head once again.
"That was pathetic on so many levels. "

Julie cocked an eyebrow as Hayden dropped like a stone to the ground, a hand over his face while the other one was still gripped in her hand. She had never seen anyone react to a joke like this, and she couldn't decide if it was sad or cute. It kind of reminded her of a puppy, actually, flopping over on the ground when it was exasperated with life. "You okay?" She asked mildly, peeking up at the old couple now whispering behind their hands to each other and stealing glances at the two of them. Well, you can't really blame them; the two of them probably looked like a very strange couple. "C'mon, cheer up, it could have been worse!"
She leaned down and patted him on the shoulder, a bit at a loss of what to do. She had never had someone fall to the ground like this before; first time for everything though, right? "To be fair, I'm a very convincing ghost." She replied jokingly to his question, before wrinkling her nose at his next comment. "Why are you apologizing, I was the jerk here." But she didn't comment on what he said- he may be naive, but that didn't make him an idiot. At least he was off the ground now, that was something!
"And no, not really." She shrugged, before shooting him a beaming grin. "I've seen worse." (Just ask her boyfriend.) "Don't worry about it, okay?"

tagged: FAILTWIN time: May 5th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: omg. "Mmm," said Hayden, giving Julie a half-hearted nod. He was trying to stay calm, trying to look normal, he really was-- he didn't want her to think that her joke had actually upset him, or anything of the like, not at all! She had probably just meant it in good fun like his friends back home. But something like this... Hayden couldn't help but sigh. Something like this. Didn't it say a lot about him? Much as she did assure him that she didn't think he was an idiot, he wasn't sure whether he believed it himself. The brunette glanced up at her, trying to smile, but he wasn't fooling anyone.
"It's just, you know, a lot of people think that it's fun to play tricks like this on me. Which it totally is," he tacked on hastily, "I think it's pretty funny myself! It's just that... I kind of wish I didn't fall for them all the time, you know?" Stop talking, stop talking, Hayden, his mind told him, but now he had started it was almost impossible for him to stop. "I just-- I just moved here so shortly ago, and I wasn't sure whether I could do this on my own, and I just need to-- I just need to learn to stop falling for stupid tricks like this before I end up doing something really stupid." Now he chuckled. "I really do have a lot to learn about the real world, after all..."
The brunette paused. Her hand was still clenching his, and she did seem a little sheepish, maybe just a little. Oh no, he hoped that he hadn't upset her, had he? Besides, it was true. He did have a lot to learn. It was just part of life. You learned from your mistakes and you grew up. It was what kept him going, what kept him singing, what kept him smiling at the end of the day. If you wanted something in life, you just had to go and get it yourself. Learning from your mistakes was just one part of the ballgame.
"Then again, we all have a lot to learn about the real world." That thought had cheered him up significantly, even if it did mean that he would have to be careful, so much more careful from here on out. Julie had just played a silly, harmless prank on him. And even though he'd just met her, it would be... It would be okay to trust her, right? To have faith that she wasn't going to do something horrible, right? After all, if she wanted to, she could have done many things that were far worse, like tried to steal all his money. Or something.
"That's just life."

She listened to the boy as he spoke, a slight frown on her face and and her bottom lip between her teeth. Oh man, now she actually did feel pretty bad. She had never really had the problem Hayden was describing; she had grown up a little too fast, was shoved into the real world a little too early on in her life. She had never been too naive or trusting to fall for other people's tricks; it was just in her nature. If anything, she was the one who pulled the wool over their eyes, time and time again.
But she could see where he was coming from; she didn't know everything, after all. She was as clueless about some things as Hayden was about not falling for pranks or trusting others too quickly. That really was just life, as Hayden so eloquently put it. She slowly nodded, a small smile quirking her lips as he finally paused. "Yup," she agreed with a grin, releasing the grip she had on his hand and replacing it by linking her arm through his. "Don't worry, I'll make sure you don't get eaten by the wolves, okay?"
Julie had quickly taken to the boy, and found that she really did want to help him out. He was a sweetheart, and didn't deserve a hard time. Was it weird that she wanted to look out for him like she did? She had never had younger siblings, or really interacted with children at all, but something about Hayden brought out the (very deeply buried) maternal side of her. She smiled to herself, before turning to him, asking cheerfully, "Speaking of the real world, shall we get going?"
They had a city to explore, after all!

She agreed!
Hayden flushed, glad for Julie's approval. Even if it came in just the form of words rather than verbal affirmation, it meant a lot to him-- meant a lot that he hadn't just been spouting nonsense, or anything of the like. A little voice at the back of his head asked him whether she was just doing this to dupe him, if she was trying to lull him into a false sense of comfort and make him feel like he was safe, but Hayden dismissed that quickly. It didn't make sense to him: she'd had plenty of opportunities to kill him by then (he could definitely think of twenty that involved her jumping from the tree with a weapon of some form) but here he was, still alive, still breathing. Getting fooled into a stupid prank that he really shouldn't have fallen for.
He supposed that at this point, he could most definitely consider Julie a friend.
Besides, it wasn't as though she knew who he was. She had no idea he was one of the children of the Green conglomerate, and no clue as to his background-- wait. The thought made Hayden's eyes widen for a moment, and he hoped that Julie would just take it as surprise that she had linked her arm around his. Yet the thought that he'd hit onto something couldn't help but linger at the back of his mind:
People had no reason to use him now they didn't know who he was.
Anonymity. That was what he had been looking for, and right here, right now, he had found it and with it, a new friend. The smile on Hayden's face only widened as Julie asked him if they should go, and he nodded, head bopping up and down like a doll's.
"All right. Let's go!"
And off they were, out into the city, ready to see Hayden's new home.
