Tonight (and by default, this morning) was one hell of a night. And no, it was not in a good way. As much as Kyoko would have loved to collapse on her bed and curl up to sleep, she couldn't. There were things to take care of. Sheryl had been rushed to the hospital, and thankfully she wasn't dead. She cursed herself for not being able to get her out healthy. She was alive, but just barely. As for Canis, well, he was checked out by a doctor and hopefully his parents were there to get him. And then there was this anomaly. She sure as hell didn't expect this on top of everything else. Giant talking rats, well she could deal with to an extent. Protecting kids, she could do as well. But this tiny child...
Kyoko thought he was cute. Really cute. She wanted to pinch his cheeks and take him to the park and just dote on him. Pretty much like she wanted to do with all kids. But it was different this time seeing as the little boy was found at the scene of a crime (well, could she even really call it a crime at this point?). He was probably traumatized. It'll be better once he was with his parents. She had to find his parents. And she was awfully tired. It was proving quite difficult to find his parents, and seeing as he was left alone, Kyoko had her suspicions as to what happened.
She really, really did not look forward to what was to come if her suspicions were correct. It'll be hard, explaining to a little kid. And he hadn't spoken a word, not since they picked him up from the wine cellar. Not a name, not a number, not anything, really. No leads at all. And what she was about to do was probably not very healthy for the boy, nor very smart at this late hour.
"Do you want a doughnut?" Kei would probably hit her. No, Kei was going to hit her for even suggesting it. A kid that age shouldn't be having sweets his late (or early), hell, he wasn't even supposed to be up at this time.

Some cases just get embedded in the memory of the people associated with it for the rest of their lives. Kei will never forget this night no matter how long she lived. How many people had died in that one room? The number of casualties for the entire building was high according to the other people fleeing the mansion. It seemed that they were not the only ones that had encountered monstrous beings and there were deaths all over the mansion. Then there were the rats. Kei wasn't afraid of rats but she was beginning to reconsider that notion. She would never look at the vermin the same way again. And Sheryl; they had failed Sheryl even though they promised to protect those kids. So many things had happened and there were so many things that she could have done differently. Kei took a deep breath. She needed to calm down and move on no longer how long it took. She would do her job and going insane over giant rats was not going to help her case with the psychiatrist that they would no doubt be forced to see sooner or later.
More importantly than that, they had picked up a boy. An adorable boy with big, blue eyes and blond hair. Unfortunately his parents were nowhere to be found. Kei knew what the worst case scenario was and hoped dearly that that was not what happened. He was too young to lose his parents so soon. Unfortunately, the child had no identifying marks on him and he wasn't talking at all, not that Kei blamed him. He had been in the cellar with them and had somehow gone unnoticed in the middle of all that chaos. He wasn't even hurt. The hospital had checked him out and there was not a scratch on him. It was a miracle.
Kei gave Kyoko a light smack on the back of the head when she heard her suggestion. "Kyo, what are you suggesting? It's 4:00am. Kids shouldn't be eating donuts at this time. Besides, I'm sure he's tired." Kei glanced at the kid. He was looking at them expectantly. He didn't look tired but he really should not be up at this time. Kei hated being up at this time. No one should be up at this time. Sane people would be asleep and resting.
"If you really want a doughnut that badly we can get some later when it's normal daylight hours. I think that it would be better if we got some rest."

Kyoko braced herself. For some reprimand, maybe followed by a figurative (or even literal) slap on the wrist or on the head, or something that really, really hurt. And she wasn't too far off, actually. Kei did smack the back of her head, but it was in an endearing sort of way. Like in those asian dramas she liked to laugh at (and occasionally sob at). And then the reprimand came which was more like she was admonishing her. It was actually kind of comical and nice, a relief from what happened earlier. A real nice relief, it reminded her how things can be good and light hearted sometimes. Se dramatically brought her hand up to the back of her head, where she was smacked, rubbing as though it hurt while it actually didn't.
"Hey, do you have any better ideas? I know it's late, and we can't really give him a donut under normal circumstances. But I would hardly call this a normal circumstance, would you? Plus, the kid doesn't look tired to me." Kyoko knew that looks were deceiving, but he looked so cute and so expecting that she could hardly resist that urge to pinch his cheeks in a way he probably wouldn't appreciate very much.
She had also wanted a doughnut herself as well, and as much as she knew it would probably ruin any sense of sleep balance she currently possessed, she felt as though after all that crap she'd been through she deserved some reward. But in terms of fairness and common sense, having the sweet treat that officers so craved all the time was not recommended at all. "Fine. You're right, as always. No donuts until it's lights out. I promise."
And Kei brought up a good point, they should be resting and asleep at such a late hour, but they weren't. Kyoko knew she wouldn't be able to sleep, at least not for the next couple of nights. She had been able to protect Canis, but Sheryl... The poor girl she had done nothing wrong and those damn rats... She was replaying the horrific scene in her head now and felt more than a little distraught. What would it be like if she were sleeping, then? Nothing good, she was sure of. She could have done something, surely she could have. Something to get any other outcome than that, but ever time she closed her eyes, she was powerless as it replayed...
If she was lucky, she'd catch a break and it'll be a dreamless sleep. But luck hadn't been on her side, if this event was any indication, and she didn't expect to be suddenly lucky. "You are right... Once again. We should rest, but we can't leave him here. He's too young, and there's no way I'm letting him stay the night at the station, no way! Not without one of us, anyways. Plus, he... He's probably facing a... a difficult realization." Much as she wanted to find his parents alive, she was starting to severely doubt it. So there was no way a parent would leave a child unattended and not go to the police to check if their lot child was there.
And right now, she was sure her eyes were just begging her partner, 'Can we keep him? Please?' But, that was a terrible and impossible situation.

Did she have any better ideas? Yes, her idea was for all of them to go to sleep and deal with things in a more effective manner in the morning. But Kyoko was right about one thing: with the way the kid as looking at them, he clearly did not feel tired at all. Kei wouldn't be surprised if the events of that night had traumatized the child to the point where he wouldn't be able to sleep. She sympathized with him and yes, perhaps a doughnut would make him feel better, but Kyoko was missing the most important point here. "Okay, let's pretend I agree and we all go out for doughnuts. Do you know anywhere that is selling doughnuts at 4:00 in the morning? We could probably find somewhere open in a couple hours but I don't know of any 24 hour doughnut shops in the area."
"I'm always right," Kei replied jokingly with a small smile. "And I understand that we've had a rough night but staying up the entire night will only make things worse for us in the morning." She didn't even want to begin thinking about the paperwork. Not to mention she needed to call child protective services. Until guardians could be found, they needed to register him with them as per protocol. "I never said we were going to leave him. That would be completely irresponsible. Child Endangerment laws, remember?"
Kei looked at the little blond boy (who was now staring up at her with his big blue eyes and Kei could suddenly feel her maternal instinct rising) and gestured with her head toward the back of the station. "The three of us can stay in the cots back there. I don't think neither of us would leave him alone. Especially after everything that's happened. If it makes you feel any better, we can all go out for pancakes for breakfast in the morning. My treat."
"As for the difficult situation..." Kei sighed. "Kyo, I know he's cute and I really like him too. But first and foremost, he's not some random kitten that we can just take home. Secondly, we have to follow protocol and he might have family out there that can take him." It was disappointing and hard for Kei to say but it was true. She was only with the boy for a few hours but he really was adorable and so well behaved. It made her wonder what it would be like if she ever had a child. "I know you're worried about him. If there's no one out there I could put in a call with a friend from Protective Services and see if we can care for him while his situation gets sorted out. But only if there really isn't anyone else. Promise?"

And this was the reason why Kyoko did not make the decisions in this pseudo relationship. This was the exact reason. To say she didn't think things through was an understatement. She really, really didn't think ahead at all. Which was a good reason Kei was her partner, because she actually did this thinking thing that Kyoko could never really wrap her mind around. "You know what, I give up. I will just go along with whatever you command." It was really regretful that the doughnut shops were not open yet, but this was LA! There had to be some sort of 24 hour place that sold donuts because... Because donuts! There had to be something... But she had a point, as she always did, and Kyoko followed along with it. There was no way that she would look for a doughnut shop at this time of night that was open right this moment. That required too much work.
Sleep sounded good. It sounded good if only for the fact that she probably wouldn't let herself sleep. It was no good if she was thrashing around anyways. She didn't want to particularly fall asleep at the station, but it wasn't lawful to take the kid to a house either. But she couldn't just not sleep. It was late, and by late she meant early, and by that she meant she should really get some sleep but she really didn't want to. It wouldn't do to thrash around or anything.
"Free... Pancakes?" Kyoko perked up a little at the mention of free. As in she didn't have to pay money. It probably wasn't the best way to think of the current situation. But, well, free anything was good. Although she wasn't sure what the extent of it was seeing as it was just from Kei, and they did occasionally go to lunch or breakfast together. "How did you know, you all knwoing goddess, it does make me feel better." She turned over to the cute little boy. "Auntie Kei is buying us pancakes tomorrow morning! If you sleep now we might be able to go early and eat a lot!"
The good humor and happiness did dissipate in a moment though, when she was suddenly reminded of the current predicament. "B-but Keiko-samaaaaaaaaa...." No amount of pleading or sucking up would help anyways, Kyoko knew, because every point she brought up was valid, and unfortunately, Kyoko could not find a loophole for the life of her. Not that she should be finding loopholes or anything. "Screw protocol..." she muttered under her breath. She understood some of the functions of protocol, but somethings it was just plain silly. Only this time, it applied to the former. "I just want him to be safe, okay? I don't want anything to happen to him, like that girl... He's already gone through enough." She tried smiling a little when she looked over at the boy, who was probably hearing everything right now.

To be perfectly honest, if they really looked, they'd probably come upon an open doughnut shop sooner or later. Even then, Kei was not going to spend the next few hours either looking for an open shop or or driving around until enough time had passed and a doughnut shop did open. Besides, if they actually went with that plan, undoubtedly Kyoko would want to drive. And if Kyoko drove, undoubtedly they would be lost in a matter of minutes. Sleeping for a few hours and then going for food seemed much more plausible. Sometimes Kei wondered how she put up with Kyoko. Then she remembered: Kyoko was a good cop and a good person, even if she was really careless and much too headstrong for her own good. At least she was never without entertainment.
Kei smiled at the way Kyoko's face lit up at the mention of pancakes. Of course she would be interested if she got free food. "Yes, Kyoko. I will treat you and the little guy to pancakes.
"No buts. And none of that "Keiko-sama" stuff. Call me that when I can actually do something about it. I know how you feel, Kyoko. I know. But there are correct ways of doing things and then there are wrong ways of doing things. Bringing the kid home just like that could be considered kidnapping. Just please be patient."
Kei finished reprimanding Kyoko and turned to look at the little boy. His wide, blue eyes were staring at them again and, although he was cute, Kei noted that past his appearance he appeared confused and, well, dead. With everything that had been going on, they had yet to really talk to him. And there was no way the boy got out mentally unscathed. She wasn't even sure if he would be willing to talk to her.
Kei knelt down so that she was just a bit shorter than the boy and the seat he was sitting on. "Hey, what's your name? How old are you? My name is Keiko but you can call me Kei." Kei paused and waited to see if the boy would respond. If he didn't perhaps Kyoko would have better luck. She was practically a kid herself and could probably communicate better.

Despite herself, Kyoko smiled a bit. Okay, so she was probably not getting any doughnuts anytime soon. And she was getting reprimanded (though with very good reason, she'll admit to herself). But she kind of felt a comfort in it too, mostly because she was delirious from being up for so long, and that it told her that she had someone looking out for her and warning her against really bad decisions like going out for a donut run at four in the morning. Because, she would probably have done it if not for Kei. Oh the bad decisions she probably would really regret if she really put them in action.
Also. Free pancakes also contributed to the smile. "See, little guy? This grumpy old lady can have a nice side too, like free pancakes. We can have chocolate chip pancakes together, I think those are the most delicious, don't you?" The kid may be cute, but the kid was also going to regret it if he said anything was more delicious in pancakeland than chocolate chip pancakes. She was a bit concerned, and she was trying to get him to smile, although it was a near impossible task at the moment. What did she really expect though? He was probably traumatized. Maybe even worse.
And although she bit her tongue, she was still mentally giving protocol the finger. Kyoko knew that it was important, but why did it have to be something that was sometimes so infuriating? Every single time she wanted to do something that was good, it was stopped by, you guessed it, protocol. And even if it was a little bit unreasonable of her, she had a vendetta against this thing called protocol. But she didn't want to break the law. After all, she was supposed to be protecting it and ensuring it was being followed, not think she was above it because she was an officer.
But she also tucked another piece of information toward the back of her head. If Kyoko called Kei with an honorific, would it be possible to get her to do things for her? That was a pretty good thing to keep in mind, in case she wanted Kei to buy her doughnuts in the future.
"Wait, don't just give him a bunch of questions like that- you gotta, like, cushion it with lots funny stuff!" Okay, the cop will admit that sounded really silly, even in her ears. "Isn't that right? Just between you and me, she's got no sense of humor (well, maybe she does, but I can't remember one instance), though I'm curious too, what's your name? Or else I'm just gonna call you little guy for the rest of your life~" Baby steps. They didn't want to really overwhelm the kid, and maybe her enthusiasm and optimism right now was not what someone would call appropriate for the situation.

"Who are you calling a grumpy, old lady?" Kei asked indignantly though not without a playful tone in her voice. "And I am always nice. Would I take you out for pancakes if I weren't?" The lighthearted banter between the two of them was always a nice reprieve from the disturbing and stressful things that their jobs called for. It was a sign that they were going to be able to move past it and continue on with their lives. Kei worried that there would be a day when they could no longer recover from the traumatic incidents but for now she pushed that worry into the back of her mind. The present was all that mattered now. Kyo's smile and caring for the little boy were all that mattered now.
"I only asked him two questions," Kei retorted but she understood what her partner had meant. Talking to kids had never been her area of expertise. Working with adults tended to be easier for her because she could actually relate with them. She couldn't help it that she had been born an only child. With Kyoko, she took on the role of the older, more mature one, but even then Kyoko was an adult, albeit a childish one. Kei was much more suited to the bad cop role in these situations. "Well work your magic then O' Great and Hilarious One."
It figured that the 'funny stuff' Kyoko was referring to would be more comments at Kei's expense. Kei just rolled her eyes and let it go. The child was more important than her getting back at Kyoko at the moment.
She regarded the little blond. His eyes were now turned away from them, avoiding the stares he was recieving from the two of them. Perhaps it would work better if she wasn't here, Kei decided. Having so many people at once probably was overwhelming. She got up and prepared to excuse herself to get them drinks when the tiny voice reached her ears.
"My name is Morris." His voice was soft and so quite that a few feet further and Kei would not have been able to hear it. It wasn't much to go on but it was progress.

Kyoko didn't fight the smile as it broke out on her face. It was nice, after that particularly terrifying night, to joke around. Although, the kid probably didn't appreciate the stares or the attention he was getting. Maybe he was an introvert, and Kyoko's naturally extroverted personality just didn't suit him at this point. "Well, sometimes you're not nice! You don't get me free pancakes everyday!" Fake pout there, although it was obviously pretend and just there for dramatic effect. Though she tentatively asked the next question, because she was half hoping Kei would agree to it. Though, she knew better. "Can you get us free pancakes everyday?"
She sort of expected another slap to the back of her head, if anything. It didn't seem like she was taking things seriously right now, but she was. Sort of. By being not-serious, she was trying to get the mood to lighten up and make the little guy feel a little more comfortable. Because she honestly couldn't imagine what he was going through. He may have been a little kid, but being in a police station with two cops and no parents was probably not a pleasant thing. And so, she was trying to make it seem like they were just very nice people who wanted to welcome him. And in the case that they find his parents alive, just taking care of him until they came back.
Kyoko didn't have much humor leverage right not besides Kei at the moment, and she felt sort of bad (and a little scared at what she might do in revenge), but what else could she do? Make fun of herself, maybe, but maybe she'll let Kei do that. Goodness, hopefully Keiko didn't feel too bad about it, but Kyoko glanced and saw she was moving back a little. Oops.
She perked up just a bit when she heard something, scarcely heard it, and delighted at the progress. What little of it there was, anyways. "Morris, huh? That's a real nice name!" But he said it in such a way, so quiet and fragile, Kyoko did everything in her power to resist the impulse to just hug the kid and tell him that things were okay, it was all good. But that was pushing the boundaries too far. "Do you have a last name to go with it or...? I'll still call you Morris though, but now's your chance to tell me if you have another nickname like Morry or something, or else you're forever Morris!" But he sort of just... shook his head.
"I'm tired too, buddy." But she had to stay awake, didn't she?

Kei could feel herself feeling better already. She was unable to force down the smile that threatened to appear on her face. Kyoko's antics could either give her a headache or make her the happiest woman in the world. In this case, it was the latter.
Kei stood back and continued to let Kyoko do the talking. She was glad that Morris was talking and gave them something to work with even if it was very little. It would have been nice to get some more out of him but he didn't seem too inclined to speak anymore.
"If you're tired, we should all go to sleep. And you know what, Kyoko? We should take the day off tomorrow. We can have a day to ourselves. I'd say we earned it. Then we can sleep in and get pancakes later."
To lighten up the topic and mood a bit, Kei returned to Kyoko's previous question. "Well do you deserve daily pancakes?" she asked jokingly, as if reprimanding a child. "Eating out everyday is expensive, you know? Cooking at home would be cheaper. But if you want them every mornings, then you two would have to live with me," Kei said out loud as she allowed her train of thought to flow naturally. "You like chocolate chip pancakes, don't you? I could probably pick up a bag on the way home, just for you. Actually, I'll probably make it two bags knowing the amount you eat."
She stopped as she realized what she was suggesting. Honestly speaking, she wouldn't have minded if her partner and the child did move in to her apartment. Some changes would have to be made but she could manage. "Well anyway, like I said. I think sleep would be good for all of us."

As much as Kyoko would have jumped and bounded in joy at the prospect of taking the day off and sleeping in, she knew that would not be a possibility within the next day or two. "I... I can't sleep." Kyoko lowered her voice just a bit so that hopefully Morris wouldn't be able to hear. It was obviously directed at her partner, she didn't want the kid to know she had some sort of vulnerability right now. She needed to be strong and... and she was exhausted. But she didn't think she would be able to sleep either, not after that whole ordeal. Still, in a heartbeat, she put on her best smile again and continued on with the lighthearted conversation.
"Well, of course I deserve daily pancakes! I mean, who doesn't deserve daily pancakes?" Kyoko grumbled perhaps a little bit too over dramatically as she did admit that Kei was right (as always, as always, could she be right about something once?), it was expensive to eat out. But of course, a smirk spread across her features. "Are you suggesting something, Kei? Morris and I would love to live with you, don't we?" Kyoko playfully nudged the kid, who was probably anything but playful right now. In fact, looking at it now, he looked the same as before. "Just how serious are you? I might take you up on your offer." Although Kyoko was, for the most part, joking about that. She wouldn't mind moving in with Kei and Morris (providing that Morris was allowed to be with them), not at all. Chocolate chip pancakes and all. "You're awesome, Kei, okay? I want those chocolate chip pancakes everyyydayyy now, okay?"
But she couldn't talk forever with Kei about the specifics of her pancake consumption, and although she was well aware of just what was being suggested, Kyoko couldn't just stop time and mull it over like she would have. No, instead there was Morris here, and Morris needed to be taken care of. She didn't want to ask questions, the generic run of the mill 'what happened' and 'where are your parents', but Kyoko wasn't the most eloquent with language and was finding it a bit difficult. "Maybe you should head off to sleep~ I mean, I'm getting tired too." She pretended to stifle a yawn. "See? I'm tired."

Kei was concerned and the look that she gave Kyoko clearly said it all. Perhaps she had been focusing too much on the kid but she had also assumed that Kyoko's state of mind was better off at the moment. They had seen some pretty terrible things in their line of work but they were usually able to sleep decently. The older woman just really wished that they could sleep only because the events of that night had been absolutely horrible and they were all clearly exhausted. They all needed sleep even if they refused to have it. Kei couldn't really blame them for not being able to sleep though. Even if they did try to sleep, there was no doubt that there would be nightmares and sleep anxiety. They certainly couldn't stay up all night either. They would have to sleep eventually and Kei hoped that it wouldn't come to using sleeping pills. If it came to that she might seriously consider quitting or going on leave until her mental state was more stable.
Kei frowned and said nothing as Kyoko went on to chatter her ear off with talk of moving in and pancakes. That was all well and good but taking care of their bodies and their minds was much more important than discussing moving in with each other. (Not that she would object if they ever brought the topic up again. She had known Kyoko long enough and they were closer than sisters. She saw no reason they couldn't move in together.) She had to figure out what to do with the two of them.
"Yes, Kyoko. Maybe we should all head off to sleep," Kei said loudly. If Kyoko refused to sleep, she would make her. Kei bent down and picked Morris up into her arms. He was light and didn't make a fuss even though she worried that he would be uncomfortable being held by her. She shifted Morris to one arm and tugged on Kyoko's shirt with the other. "Morris and I are going to sleep in the cots in back and so are you." Kei paused before adding in Japanese, "We can all sleep together if it makes you feel any better." It certainly would make Kei feel better, knowing that they were close and safe. "I promise you, we'll get pancakes in the morning."

Okay well she probably could have handled this a little better. A little bit. But with all the rather horrible things they had seen - undead rats that didn't die from bullets probably phased her the most. They didn't die, she didn't expect them not to die, and therefore Kyoko found them scary because they were physically hard to kill. After all, humans were easy to injure, it was just the human conscience that usually stopped people from murdering others. Not like it stopped the murderers out there, but for most people that was the case. Guess who could never look at rats the same again? This cop. Granted, she probably would see another rat, and if that rat knew anything good for it it would run before she had the chance to get her gun out.
Because she was going to be carrying her gun everywhere now, no questions asked. Since Kyoko had no intention of sleeping at all, she was wondering whether is was a good idea to include 'undead rats' in her report. She had to mention Morris, of course, but she was pretty sure that the Chief would not believe her if she said that the rats didn't die when she hit them with countless bullets. But how was she going to explain the use of her gun without saying the word undead? 'Rat infestation'?
But Kei wasn't having any of that, in fact, Kei was forcing her to sleep. What was she, a baby? Kyoko could handle herself quite well, if she said so. After all, she had war scars from the Battle of Unkillable Rats. But... but she had a point, and little Morris was fairly close to being a baby. Minus the disgusting and the diapers and the spit and the vomit. "Fine." There was no arguing this point with her, anyways, it was an uphill battle that Kyoko did not want to face right this moment. "I'll sleep with you. We better get those pancakes." She managed to grumble out. She had wanted to pretend to 'keep watch for scary rats' again but that probably wasn't logical seeing as they were at the station. And, well, the station was a fairly safe place.

Kei could tell that Kyoko was fighting the idea of going to sleep. She couldn't blame her after what they went through but Kei could be just as stubborn about it. The older woman was set on having them get some sleep. She could easily just go to bed without Kyoko but then Kei would probably be up the entire night worrying about her partner anyway.
It made her smile when Kyoko finally conceded. Clearly none of them really wanted to get any sleep since it was doubtful they would be able to. However humans needed sleep to survive and it was better to get some sooner than later. "Wonderful," Kei grinned softly at Kyoko. It was the best she could manage at the moment but it was something. "Any preference for which bunk we take? And yes, let me repeat: I swear to you, Kyoko, that I will buy you pancakes when we get up. And not just any pancakes, chocolate chips pancakes. As many as you want. Now let's go."
With that, Kei made her way to the back of the police department where the bunks were housed. She hoped that they would get some rest that night.

Okay so Kyo felt maybe a little better at a guarantee of chocolate chip pancakes. The key being that Kei had mentioned chocolate chip pancakes. It was the deal breaker. But why was it that she felt like a little child being forced to sleep by a parent. That parent being her partner... who may as well have filled that position anyway. She also felt like a spoiled brat because she had to be bribed to do something so simple as go to sleep, even though she just couldn't. Although she may be physically exhausted and on the verge of collapsing, she didn't think she could sleep that easy. Maybe it would be easier to sleep if Kei was there with her? If she were alone she'd probably be watching scary movies all by herself and letting time tick by.
"I don't care - hey, Morris can choose!" Kyoko smiled brightly at the little boy, who picked one of the bunks. And she followed the two of them back, wondering just how she was going to force herself to sleep. Maybe once her head hit the bunk or something, she'd be revealed to be a huge hypocrite and fall asleep immediately - sometimes she did that. Fall asleep with no intention of falling asleep. "I will dream of..." She took a minute to think. "... a hundred chocolate chip pancakes. And when I wake up, it will be a reality."
And she looked over at Kei purposefully before climbing onto the bunk. "A hundred chocolate chip pancakes."

Kei gave Kyo an exasperated smile as she went on a long soliloquy about chocolate chip pancakes. If she really loved them that much, perhaps she could use it as a bargaining chip with Kyoko more often. Or rather, it was probably food in general that Kyo really loved. Next time Kei needed something done, it would cost her an arm and a leg but she was going to use food as an incentive. They were probably going to eat out a lot more often now. Once Morris was safely nestled in the middle of the two women so that he would not fall off the edge of the bed, Kei followed suit. Once she made sure that Kyo and Morris were soundly asleep, she too would drift off into an uneasy slumber. (---------------------------------Time Skip to Morning---------------------------------) Kyoko had been right. Kei fell asleep eventually but it did not come easily and when she was finally asleep, the nightmares started. Images of giant rats were everywhere. And that poor girl, Sheryl, haunted her dreams. Why hadn’t she been able to save her? Her or any of the other people in the wine cellar. They were cops, that was their job and they had failed. Kei woke up in the morning to the smell of coffee and the sound of her coworkers beginning to resume their regular morning duties. She sat up and took a look around the room. Morris and Kyoko were still next to her thankfully, but she wasn’t sure how well they had slept. She certainly hoped that it was better than the way she slept.

Kyoko had been able to sleep. In fact, she had fallen asleep in such a short amount of time, she was a little embarrassed to admit it. It wasn't really a good sleep - she certainly didn't feel well rested at the moment, nor did she think she was going to. And she just wondered - how did Morris sleep? Sleeping with two complete strangers (albeit strangers that had rescued him from a terrifying situation) probably didn't make him feel all that comfortable, but he seemed to have fallen asleep alright. She was just a little worried about Kei, who she hoped felt a lot better than she did. She had woken up by herself, it was just that she felt awful. Absolutely awful. Like shit.
She'd kill for some coffee right now - in fact, she smelled it now. The first of the officers have arrived, probably. Maybe... maybe five more minutes of sleep wouldn't hurt anyone. But she forced those eyes open - if she went back to sleep now, she'd never wake up. Plus, she didn't want to revisit the memories of the death-filled cellar. Her head swiveled around in confusion for a few seconds before locating Kei, in which she gave a huge smile. "Good morning! Did you sleep well?" But let's face it - did any of them really sleep well?
"Mmm, you too Morris, did you sleep well?" Aside from sleeping well, though, Kyoko did have one more question.
"So, Kei, when are we getting those pancakes?"

Kyoko woke up minutes later as Kei combed her fingers through her bed head. "Morning," she yawned. She didn't get much sleep and it wasn't all that comfortable either but at least she got something. It was nice to see that her bed mates had done the same. "Yeah, decently. Well, I slept anyway and that's something," she said with a tired smile. She wouldn't mention the nightmares that had troubled her rest, they probably went through the same. Poor, well behaved Morris was still so quiet though. Kei would have thought that he was still asleep if he hadn't sat up after she and Kyoko began talking.
The little child nodded his head at Kyoko's question and rubbed his eyes sleepily. This was probably a bad time but Kei felt really compelled to pinch his cheeks. Kei wasn't very good with kids but goodness he was adorable.
"Pancakes? Ah yes, I promised you two pancakes didn't I? Let's get ready and we'll head down to Ihop or Denny's or some other breakfast chain for some food," she said sliding out of bed. Her body ached and she needed to stretch. "Any preferences as to where to go? I know Kyoko wants chocolate chip pancakes so that should be easy. What do you want for breakfast, Morris?"

Morning after Keiko was always nice. Even though she was tired (both of them were tired), Kyoko couldn't help but appreciate her in all her beauty that was in the morning. If only her hair looked as nice as her partner's when she woke up. Kyoko felt genuine jealousy from that (or maybe it was just her idealizing again, the two of them definitely had some bed hair). She would just die for some coffee right now. Still in the bed, she stretched out her arms and then stooped won over at Morris' level. He was quiet, but hopefully she could cheer him up with food and pancakes.
She smiled a bit sheepishly at the mention of chocolate chip pancakes. She had been quite adamant about that (they were delicious, after all), though she was just as in the dark about what Morris wanted. "If you don't know, we could always just go and you can decide there." As long as there were pancakes, Kyoko was happy.
Hell, as long as the two of them were there, she was pretty content. It kind of felt like family, but sort of different from her own. There was definitely the urge to protect the child at all costs, although Kyoko tended to feel that way to pretty much any child in danger she happened to come across. But there was also the want to play with him in the sandbox or take him to the amusement park (maybe when he was a little older - well, would she even know him when he was older?) as well.
Huh, maybe she was getting a bit paternal. Bad Kyoko, this child wasn't even her's.

Morris nodded at Kyoko's question and Kei smiled at the two as she gathered up her hair in a ponytail. As much as she loved having long hair, it could be a real pain sometimes. Especially when the hair was wavy and as messy as hers was. And if she was honest she would love a shower soon. "Do I look okay?" Kei asked curiously. "If I do I'll probably just shower after we get food. Afterwards, we should probably go shopping for some clothes for Morris too when we get the chance. Does that sound good?" Morris only nodded. He was so incredibly well behaved but so quiet. It would be nice if he could open up to them more. Since it seemed that for the time being he was going to be staying with them they might as well buy some things for him so that his stay would feel more comfortable.
"Well, now that we have decided what to do we should probably get going. We might as well just go to Ihop then since no one seems to have any preference," Kei said as she slipped on her shoes. She stood up looked at her partner's face. "Do you want some coffee before we head out? Or we could just get some when we get there.
