words | 417 | Oh, Los Angeles. It was the city she had known all of her life. She had been born and raised there with hardly any complaints. She had a good enough childhood and it was still the place she recognized as home. However, even though she was happy to leave San Francisco for the beginning of a long break, it seemed all too soon to return to the city. Mi-Ho wouldn't have said that she missed it, really. Coming from the more agreeable weather of San Fran made the beginnings of summer heat seem daunting and everything was still so, so busy.
She had only been back for two days, but it was clear enough that nothing had changed. It wasn't necessarily unreasonable, she simply disapproved of the noisy hubbub of the streets, the busses, the chattering people walking by, the tiny barking purse dogs… There was more, of course, but she found it best just to put her passive annoyance aside for the moment. Mi-Ho decided to take solace in the venture that seemed most enjoyable. Her temporary sanctuary? An ice cream parlor. It was an overly commercialized mess quite a walk from where she lived, but she remembered liking it well enough when she went there with friends in high school.
When she entered the building, the atmosphere was still subpar, but still what one would expect from a chain ice cream parlor. The fact that there had been no real renovations since the last time she was there was not surprising. It was crowded and most of the seats were taken. What made this particular store different, though, was the ice cream itself. The manager of the business liked to make things a little bit better than even the stores of the same chain, and it showed. The vanilla was a little sweeter, the lemon was a little more sour, and the floats always seemed to float a bit longer. It was nice.
The Korean girl pondered her options and finally settled on a cream soda float. That part was easy. The hard part was now figuring out where in the world she was going to go to enjoy her dessert. A quick glance of the store let her know that every table was taken. And then a mother of two left a convenient table of two in the corner. There was her opportunity. Wasting no time, she hurried for a seat hoping that no one else getting a frozen treat had the same idea. |

For once, Kyoko was not lost as she walked the streets of Los Angeles. In fact, she knew exactly where she was going. But she wondered for a fleeting moment if she did get lost. She checked around. Same lamp. Same sign. Same scenery. It was the same as the last block! She uttered a groan as she continued walking. Surely if she just kept going in the same direction she was going to go, maybe something familiar would pop up. A unique sign, or a store, or maybe... well, surely it was fine and she just happened to check her surroundings at an inopportune time. Recounting the directions and the route she had taken, Kyoko was sure she was going the right way. Only one way to find out.
As she walked, she made sure to keep an eye on where she was going. And soon, she did eventually find a landmark she was familiar with! Thank goodness, hopefully that ice cream parlor was close by. She had chosen to walk mostly due to the fact that it was close by. And as she entered and inhaled the sweet scent of ice cream, the initial happiness of getting here in one piece and not getting lost was replaced by irritation. Full house. And she had planned to stay here and stuff her face all full of ice cream too! She couldn't fight a pout either. Just her luck, wasn't it? All the trouble getting here and she was thwarted by the popularity of the place. Which was all good for them but she couldn't help but feel a little dismayed at the lack of room.
That didn't get in the way of her getting her ice cream, though! She'd just wait for a table to clear up as she ate her ice cream, although standing around awkwardly didn't help so much. Though much to her delight a table opened up near the corner, thank goodness. Kyoko just about rushed there to secure a seat when... well, someone else took it. But there were two chairs so she thought, what was the harm in sharing the table? Enjoying ice cream with the company of another made it all that more delicious, after all! "Mind if I share a table with you?"

words | 327 | Exactly what Mi-Ho had briefly worried about as she hurried for the table appeared in front of her in the form of another woman. It was a busy place, of course someone else would have tried to swipe the open table for themselves. However, she was presented with an option. The other woman asked if they could share. At first, she was actually hesitant to comply. She took a moment to look around the crowded and sweet-smelling the room.
"It's busy today, isn't it?" She said, mainly to herself as her eyes finished scanning any possible alternative in the building. It was clear that there were no other seats for either of them if neither wanted to eat outside. It wasn't really worth looking any more than that. It seemed like it would've been more effort to try and shoo the other woman away, or to wait for another table than it was to just sit down and enjoy her float. She wasn't going to wait until the dessert melted to make a decision. So, she nodded as she sat down, agreeing to the conditions as they were. "I don't mind."
It wouldn't be that bad, surely.
The Korean girl set her dessert down as well and drank some of the cream soda out of it before she dared to try and eat any of the ice cream from the top. It was a simple dessert way sweeter than it needed to be, but it was exactly what she needed in that moment. After all, who didn't like ice cream? In fact, if anything she picked up the spoon and then contemplated if this was even enough ice cream for the day. Perhaps she'd get something else when finished… She intended to mostly ignore the other woman, but she found her eyes drifting over to her curiously. "What did you order?" She hated small talk. However, she didn't hate getting ideas of what else would be delicious. |

As much as Kyoko did not want to share a table, she was open to the new experience. In fact, it might prove quite entertaining, and she might make a friend in the process, which was good, she could use more friends and acquaintances. Plus, she'd feel like a jerk if she just stole the table and kept it all to herself, after all, there was room for more than just one here. If she monopolized the table, what would people think of her? Plus, what was the saying, ice cream tasted sweeter when it was enjoyed with people, not just by herself. Maybe she should start viewing this as more of a blessing than a curse. Not that she thought the woman was bad company in the first place, she was just weighing the pros and cons at this point.
Though it was mostly silence as the two ate their respective ice creams. In fact, Kyoko was just finishing her's, and much to her dismay, she was nowhere near satisfied with it. She slowed herself down, even though she wanted nothing more than to consume the sugary goodness that was in front of her now. She didn't exactly find the prospect of getting up and getting more ice cream an appealing thought. Even though it was her seat, and she got it fair and square, she slowed down. Even so, she wanted to enjoy and savor the ice cream too, not just speed through it and get a brain freeze.
She looked over at the other woman's sweet treat. It actually looked really good, and of course she had come to this place with a craving for ice cream, so she was going to eat as much ice cream as she possibly could here. And yes, she sort of entertained the thought of eating the place out of its ice cream, but that was probably impossible at this rate. But getting full on ice cream seemed like a good idea at this point, actually.
Kyoko had been sitting in silence for a good amount of time she was actually a little startled when her seat buddy actually talked. "Oh! Yeah! Uh, triple chocolate sundae. What can I say, I really like my chocolate. Chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup and chocolate everywhere. Heaven, in my opinion. If you don't mind too terribly, what about you? What did you order?" It looked really good from here, from her perspective, and she was going to try to eat the little parlour out of stock so why not add that to the list as well?
"Ah, before I forget, I should probably introduce myself. Kyoko, it's really nice to make your acquaintance."

words | 370 | The magic thing about ice cream was that it was easy to eat a lot of it. Perhaps it wasn't the same for everyone, but for her at least she seemed to have a second stomach for ice cream. It was cool and not all that filling despite how heavy some of the richer flavors could be. The Korean girl usually had a lot of self-control, but on the particular day she didn't feel any shame in indulging a little bit more than she normally would. This was the thought that ran through her mind as she continued eyeing the other woman's dish.
However, she did finally look up when the other finished explaining what exactly it was that she had ordered. A triple chocolate sundae hadn't even crossed Mi-Ho's mind when she first walked in the parlor doors. Normally she wouldn't have been the type to dive straight into that much chocolate, but actually it didn't sound terrible. In fact, after something as sweet as she was eating, something with a deeper flavor would probably be perfect.
Then the inevitable introduction came from the woman afterwards. This wasn't a bad thing, of course. That's what she decided for the time being, at least. If she was going to be stuck at a table with the woman for awhile longer, it was probably good to know her name. She knew that she tended to dislike 'hey you's just as much as she assumed others did. It was only fair to avoid that and give her own name as well.
"Mi-Ho," she answered simply before putting another spoonful of ice cream into her mouth and taking a moment to swallow that before continuing. "This is the cream soda float with french vanilla ice cream. It's usually what I end up getting here, but I've been meaning to try something different even if it's been awhile."
She then pushed the half-eaten ice cream float over to the other as a gesture to offer some. Mi-Ho had never been the germaphobe type, so the idea of letting a complete stranger take a spoon to her food didn't strike her as odd or dangerous. "Try some. It'd probably be good after so much chocolate." |

To say Kyoko was a bit sweets fan was an understatement. Every time her workplace had donuts (which, it usually did being a police station), she ate them without fail. All the times. Surprising she didn't get a stomach ache or cavities. And boy, did she indulge herself a lot. Chocolate was, by far, her favorite. She always aimed for the chocolate glazed donuts and now, well, she had a triple chocolate sundae. If that didn't scream chocolate, she wasn't sure what did.
She was, of course, not adverse for trying new things, and when the girl - Mi-ho was her name - offered her the delicious looking float, Kyoko hesitated for maybe a half second before shrugging and taking the offer. "If you offer me, then it would only be polite of me to offer mine as well." She pushed her share of the chocolate sundae towards the middle of the table too. Well, it wasn't too bad of a compromise if she'd say so herself - the amount may not be the same, but at least she got to try different flavors and see if she liked them or not. Like free samples, but not exactly.
Kyoko took her spoon and ate a portion of the float, and was pleasantly surprised. Well, it was fairly sweet, she expected that out of ice cream, but it was very different from the chocolate she had been eating and it was nice. Very nice. She did have a lot of chocolate. "Thank you, it was very nice!" And with rejuvenated energy, she set out to eating out the parlour of all its ice cream. Brain freeze or not. "Hmm, I want to try all the different stuff here now."

words | 269 | The girl didn't show it, but she was more than happy to dig into the chocolate sundae when it was offered to her. She didn't take too much, but she didn't hesitate to take a good spoonful. "Thanks," she at least said before she tried it. It was good. Smooth. Even if she wasn't huge on the idea of putting chocolate with even more chocolate, it was exactly how she would have wanted that much chocolate to taste. It was rich and creamy without being cheapened by the overuse of the flavor. She definitely had to get something else now. Perhaps not that particular sundae, but some sort of sundae did sound delicious as her next choice. She looked over at the large menu board above the cash register.
"Actually…" Mi-Ho took a pause with the spoon in her mouth. She still had some uncertainty about the decision, but an idea occurred to her that made sense. If the woman wasn't squeamish about sharing with a stranger, and if they both wanted to try different things, then why not shoot for the largest and most varied thing on the menu. "I don't know if you've been here before, but they have a special sampler that's like a big sundae. It's pretty big, but it's not terribly expensive and I wouldn't mind splitting it. Interested?"
Between the two of them the cost wasn't bad at all. The amount of ice cream being considered, however, was something she knew to be plenty for four people as opposed to just two. But what better way to welcome herself back to Los Angeles? |

All Kyoko could really think about right now was sweets. Sweet and ice cream and things of that sort. In fact, it was a little hard not to, surrounded by the delectable delights. "No problem! If you don't mind, I might take some more of yours...?" It trails off sort of as a question, though she meant it more like a polite way of informing Mi-Ho about the spoonful she was taking once more towards the other's own dessert. She couldn't help herself - it was just nice after all that chocolate! And she had sort of non-verbally offered her more, and Kyoko was taking the verbal cues as a yes, she could have more. "You can help yourself to mine too." She nodded her head towards the chocolate sundae, signalling it as well.
Kyoko was not going to lie. Perhaps her eyes had shined a bit brighter and her smile turned out more into a grin, but now she got the unexpected urge to splurge on sweets (with what little restraint she had in the first place, it probably wasn't exactly unexpected at all, if she thought about it). And it was more tipped with the mention of that sampler thing. No, she had never heard of it before, but she wasn't afraid to try it, and she certainly didn't think she could ever finish off something with all the ice cream that the parlour had to offer. But with two people, it was different. "If you don't mind sharing, but I don't think you do since you offered, I'm all for it!"
Okay, maybe she was being just a little too excited for something like ice cream, but couldn't she be more of a kid once in a while and get sick on ice cream? It seemed a good of a plan as any. She was curious as to what this big sundae of ice cream had to offer, and, well, who wouldn't be excited for something like that? Fat kid in the candy store expression seemed to pop up in her mind, although she passed it off as bull. "Though, would you like me to save the table while you go grab it, uh..." There were still the not finished ice cream and the float on the table. "Well, I suppose we should finish these off first before going headfirst into the big one, right?"
She took another bite of her own chocolate sundae. "How much is the sampler, again?"

words | 355 | Mi-Ho nodded when the woman asked for more of her dessert. She hardly minded, especially when the prospect of even more ice cream afterwards was up in the air. Having some help with her dessert was fine, even if it was negated by the fact she had also tried some of the chocolate sundae. On that note though, she didn't hesitate in helping herself to some more of the rich chocolate ice cream. Another good spoonful was taken and eaten, followed by another sip of her own cream soda.
It was so, so sugary. It boarded on too sugary together, but that was what made it perfect for the moment. She would have to be sure to brush her teeth when she got home, knowing that this was likely the sort of situation that led to cavities. She hadn't really wanted the dentist to prod too much in her mouth since she had her wisdom teeth removed a year and a half ago.
Sharing wasn't a problem, but Kyoko did bring up the good point that they needed to finish what they had first. "Yes, we should," she agreed. Mi-Ho had been slowly savoring her treat, but it was ice cream and she did want more. She picked up her speed just a little bit. Not too fast, of course, just less slow. She didn't want to fall victim to brain freeze so soon into the venture.
"The sampler is twenty-six, so it would be thirteen each. Seems a bit much, but that's ten scoops of ice cream with whatever toppings we'd like." When she said it that way it seemed like a lot to eat. However, she was still up for it assuming her new acquaintance was. It wasn't every day that she had a chance to try it. Her friends from high school were scattered around, and there was no way she was going to talk her brother into it anytime soon. Now was the best chance. "Is that still alright? It might take some time to finish, too. I wouldn't want to hold you up if you have somewhere important to be." |

The chocolate sundae was soon to be devoured by no other than her. It wasn't as though she wasn't sharing, it was just the unfortunate event of... eating it all. By herself. Really quickly. Which probably would prove later not to be quite a good idea for her to do, but what else could she do but eat it all up quickly? She wanted that ice cream sampler, dammit, and she was getting it. Granted, she probably could have taken her time, but how could she wait when she was faced with such a delicious thing? Honestly, where was the logic in that? Of course, there was no logic in her course of action anyways. But who thought about something as boring as logic when there was ice cream in front of them?
Twenty six dollars. A hefty price, but it would be worth it. So worth it. Especially since the cost was being split, so it was really only thirteen dollars - a steal in her opinion. With a lot of things being way overpriced these days, it was sort of lucky to find something that she thought even resembled something like a deal. This, well, she wasn't sure how she could justify spending thirteen dollars on ice cream to Kei or someone else like that, but it seemed like a good deal in her mind, and she just passed it off as them not appreciating ice cream like they should.
"That seems like a good deal considering the amount." But really, the way Mi-Ho was describing it made it seem like it was large. It had better be large. Kyoko would be disappointed if it weren't large. Granted, she might not be able to finish it, but that was why Mi-Ho was here sharing it, right? Although Kyoko wasn't exactly sure if she could even finish her share of it.
Nah, that was nothing to worry about, when in the face of ice cream, she was sure she would be able to finish it! "I'm not particularly busy, either. I can stay for a long, long time. At least, I think so. I don't think I'd be called in for work anytime soon." She took one more bite of the chocolate sundae, which she successfully finished off with that. Done. "Want me to get it or you?"

words | 363 | When one did the math, twenty-six dollars for ten scoops of ice cream equaled out to just a bit over two and a half dollars a scoop. One scoop of ice cream could easily cost more than that after the cone and all of the toppings were chosen, so they were indeed saving money by just buying more at once. Supposedly. If nothing else, Mi-Ho decided that at least they weren't being ripped off by the dessert, especially when they were splitting the bill. Thirteen bucks for a good helping of ten different flavors of ice cream with all the bells and whistles? No, it wasn't bad at all.
The girl nearly managed to finish the large scoop of ice cream that had once topped her float. She watched as the rest seemed to finally sink into the drink that was already too sweet. She took another sip and then stirred it a bit.
"That's good. I'd like to get home by five, but that's awhile off. I imagine we'll be done long before then." They would have to be done before then. Not because she was in a hurry, but because this was ice cream they were dealing with. The creamy frozen dessert was time sensitive and she wasn't paying thirteen dollars on cold creamy soup. Ice cream may have been delicious in something like a shake or a float, but it just wasn't quite right by itself as a drink. Being the sort of person who did not agree with wasting food, she had tried to drink melted ice cream enough times as a child to know that it just didn't work.
At Kyoko's question, she finally sat her spoon down for a short moment. It was just long enough to dig through her tiny purse for the right amount of money. She found herself pulling out a ten, two dollars, three quarters, two dimes, and a nickel. Semi-budgeting until she started her job was tough, but when all else failed she always had change. "Here," she said, handing her part of the sundae cost over to the woman. "I'll keep the table safe and finish what I have left. Thanks."

Thoughts of melting ice cream didn't really plague Kyoko's head. Not immediately, anyways. Mostly because she was perhaps a little cold in this air conditioned parlour, having consumed a considerable amount of something that was cold - read: ice cream. Perhaps she shouldn't have agreed to more ice cream, but, it was delicious and she was going to eat something delicious despite if she was cold or warm or uncomfortable with it or whatever. Because, honestly, how could she refuse? If there was one thing that Kyoko lacked, it was willpower. Willpower to refuse something sweet, that is. It just wasn't in her nature.
Kyoko only carried bills in her pockets. It wasn't as though she had something against spare change or coins or anything. She just didn't have the wallet (or the purse) to carry said coins. She couldn't fit a wallet with an extra pocket with a zipper in her back pocket. It just wasn't happening. But right, most people did carry change, didn't they? She pulled out her own ten and three ones, took the odd combination of coins and bills. And maybe she dropped that nickel once on the table, but things like that happened.
"Alright, sounds like a plan~" She departed with the money, and no, she did not accidentally drop all the coins onto the floor. Some people did look her direction when she got up, just to see if she freed a table. But they were, naturally, met with disappointment when they realized Mi-ho was still there, and she was only getting up to get the sundae of all sundaes. She ordered it, easy enough, forking over the money on the counter. It only proved to be a problem when, after a little waiting, she realized just how big it was, and how much she hoped that Mi-ho had a sweet tooth that rivaled her's.
"I didn't expect it to be this big but, well, it was twenty six dollars." At least it wasn't a hundred, right, that would be way out of her budget.

words | 338 | The money exchange was just a tad difficult because of her handful of coins, but Kyoko seemed to have it managed quickly enough. Then she watched the woman walk away to the counter, successfully carrying the change without dropping anything a second time on the way there. There was some satisfaction in the brief moment alone, even if she was the slightest bit excited for the mountain of ice cream that would soon be coming. Some people who were waiting to snipe a table seemed disappointed that she wasn't moving as well, but she hardly cared. It was their table for as long as they needed it and she imagined they were now buying enough ice cream to justify claiming the seats for awhile longer.
While the other woman busied herself with waiting for their dessert by the counter, Mi-Ho was finishing her cream soda float. She had finally gotten to the bottom, stirring the last of the vanilla into the drink before sipping it away through the straw. So sweet, but it was something she knew she'd want again in the future.
She found herself trying to find the best place to scoot their empty dishes when Kyoko returned. Mi-Ho, actually, did not have much of a sweet tooth usually. However, the moment her eyes laid eyes on the oversized sundae was also the moment she felt resolved in her decision to at least pretend she had one for the day. That was an impressive looking dessert. She had seen it before, of course. It had just been awhile since she had seen it last. She was ready to dig in, even after her float. She lifted her spoon and looked up at the other woman.
"Race you to the center?" The Korean girl said very flatly with an equally empty expression. She had no intention to actually race, but she still rolled up her sleeve and waited for Kyoko to make the first move. She was the one who brought it to their table after all. |

The sundae of all sundaes this was. And Kyoko was impressed. Beyond impressed. A sort of 'can two people really finish this?' impressed. And she was sure that her face probably showed it, her excitement to start digging in. And common courtesy did dictate that she at least wait for a go ahead, or a mutual agreement of eating the sundae before completely devouring it on her own (although, it was more like the process of starting to devour it, because she doubted that she could even make an impression in this massive thing), but she couldn't resist. When she set the ice cream down on the table, it took all her willpower not to eat first. But she was eyeing it. Eyeing it very much.
Her signal to start eating did come, eventually. Although, curiously, Kyoko was not expecting a challenge. In all actuality, it probably wasn't a challenge, but the way she said it made Kyoko think of it. And there was no way that she could ever refuse a challenge, no matter how stupid it was. And it was kind of stupid to accept a competition to the center of a huge ice cream, with brain potential brain freeze and probably a huge stomachache later on. But it wasn't like she cared, right now she was concerned about the sundae, and how to strategically get to the center before Mi-Ho.
"Challenge accepted." Okay, now that she thought about it, Mi-Ho probably did not mean to actually race, but maybe it was just her competitive nature. Making a mess and stuffing her face was a no-no, but if she consumed ice cream at a faster rate she'd probably be happy with the self-victory. But it was still uneasy for her to take the first bite, no matter how the appearance of the ice cream looked so amazingly delicious and promised great taste-
Oh screw it. Kyoko never did have great self control anyways, and when something like a sundae was offered to her on a silver platter (almost literally, actually), who was she to refuse? But still, she took a tentative first bite, digging her spoon in and bringing it to her mouth, almost savoring the taste.
And yes. It tasted amazing, just as she had predicted.

words | 285 | Mi-Ho normally made many less reservations about waiting for the other person to eat first. However, since she had said something to begin with, she waited for Kyoko to take the first bite. The woman seemed impressed and happy enough when she dug in, which came as a relief since Mi-Ho had talked her into purchasing it with her. She wasn't about to get saddled with eating it all herself. And so began the dangerous task of trying to polish off the large mountain of ice cream. She wasn't racing no, but she wasn't being as incredibly idle as she had been when first eating her ice cream float. They had a lot to get through before it started melting into a terrible creamy soup.
The flavor she decided to attack first was the mint chip. It was creamy and minty, just as one would expect from the flavor. However, it seemed a bit more fluffy that she usually found the ice cream to be. It was odd, but only in a pleasant way. Then the chips seemed more like tiny pieces of dark chocolate shavings, which only added to her enjoyment of it. As bleak and typically unimpressed as Mi-Ho usually was about the world around her, not even she could deny that the ice cream was good. If she was going to try and deny it, she wouldn't have suggested ordering such a horrendous amount.
"This one," she said, pointing to it with her spoon. "This one is really good." Then it was on to try what looked to be the butter pecan flavor. Or maybe it was a salted caramel? Only a spoonful would help her figure out what it really was. |

There was contemplating silence for a while, and Kyoko understood it for the most part. After all, she wasn't talking because she was enjoying the ice cream, so surely Mi-ho was doing the same. Or so, that was what she assumed. So she kept digging into her preferred choice of ice cream (that of being strawberry cheesecake). The creaminess, combined with the sweetness of the strawberry, it combined into a symphony of deliciousness. This was the reason she liked ice cream so much.
Though she didn't particularly mind the suggestion from the other either - she liked mint chip well enough. "Strawberry cheesecake tastes pretty good too." She moved around the sundae to better get at the mint chip while also offering her the strawberry cheesecake flavor. Mi-Ho was right - it tasted fantastic, in her opinion. She took another bite, and then switched around to a few other flavors on her side of the huge sundae. She was content for the time being to eat in silence, to more properly enjoy the sweet dessert.
Though she supposed after they were done and had taken their fill (and hopefully have finished this whole thing), Kyoko would have to leave and so would the other, and that would probably be the last time the two met. Well, unless they happened to come to the same ice cream parlor at the same time on the same day sometime in the future.
