At this stage, he was all too happy for one of the other two to take the lead. He was no leader, no grand warrior of any sort, but at least he was able to help people. At least he was able to protect them, and to be a good friend, maybe, hopefully. Most of the time.
"Well, let's go then," he said, starting in the direction that Emmie had directed him in. It was nice to just be walking like this, with a goal in mind. While he'd met many people in his travels in Los Angeles there was nothing like having the same kind of friendship that he had back in the day, and it was just nice being around Gabi. Speaking of Gabi, he took a step closer to her, leaning down to whisper in her ear.
"I hope you didn't hack her phone to change all her contacts, or something." He'd seen someone do that on the Internet. It had been a post that Gabi had reblogged. Apparently the girlfriend of one of her Internet friends had hacked his phone's contacts to all say 'it is a mystery', and since then, he'd lived in fear that Gabi was going to do that to him. Then again, Gabi could hardly have done that so quickly, could she?
Also, Gabi was also probably saving that prank for him.

The two of them were doing their cute little map reading thing, which was honestly all kinds of adorable. Gabi stood up on tip toe and peered at where Emmie was pointing. "Oh yay!" That wasn't very far at all. They could get there in no time if they motored. She nodded happily in agreement with Hayden, loudly exclaiming, "Let's hustle!" After all, by now the timer would be ticking down to the wire- they had to hurry to complete the mission before time ran out! Who knows what'd happen then!
Absolutely nothing, probably, except maybe another announcement over the intercom. Or mall security fanning out to try and track them down, to wrangle them back to the information desk for questioning! What scum!!
They began walking again, and once again Hayden leaned down to whisper in her ear. Dude seriously needed to knock that off. She glanced up and met his eyes, raising her brows at him. Really, it was like he didn't trust her at all PFFFTHAHAHA yeah good call, Hayden. "Maybe next time." She replied in a low voice with a cheeky grin. He probably wouldn't be happy with what she had done at all, so she'd wait to tell him later.
Maybe.
She had other things on her mind at the moment, though, like how they could speed things up a little. A thought struck her, and a smirk lit up her features. Bounding up to Emmie, she asked excitedly, "Hey MnM, do you want us to carry you the rest of the way to the desk? You'll be like a princess!" Because that's what she totally was! A princess!!! And they had to carry her to safety as quickly as possible! Plus she was probably tired from all this running around, right? It was the nice thing to do!

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Well, the little “adventure” was coming to an end. Emmeline wasn’t sure if she was relieved or a little sad. She rather liked Gabrielle and Hayden, and she knew that her mom would want to take her home when they found them: a quick glance at her phone’s clock told her that it was getting close to dinner time. They’d only come here to look at a couple stores, after all, and the search had taken quite a bit of time.
Well, she’d just have to ask them for their numbers or something. Maybe. Or an email. Emmeline much preferred contact via the internet than by the phone, unless it was texting. She really hated talking on the phone. . . . A lot.
She nodded and smiled—a real smile—before following after Hayden and Gabrielle as they made their way in the direction Emmeline had pointed. It felt nice to do the problem solving instead of having other people problem solve for her, though she was certain Hayden would have found the information booth after a short while. After all, the map was only so big so there was no way he couldn’t have spotted it. She’d just gotten lucky, that was all.
As usual, Emmeline fell into step behind the other two. She much preferred walking behind people, though she wasn’t sure why. Especially in this situation: she was, after all, a tag-along. They were best friends, it didn’t seem right standing between them or even next to one or the other. She wasn’t best friend status right now.
Emmeline’s heart sank slightly when they started talking to each other. They were speaking quietly, and Emmeline, for a few seconds, couldn’t help but think that they were talking about her. Maybe whispering terrible things about her. Oh. . . they couldn’t think very highly of her. She was lost at a mall like a small child and had a panic attack in the middle of a harmless prank and was just a big lump of uselessness. They couldn’t want to be her friends. There was no way.
However, not even seconds later, her spirits were lifted slightly when Gabrielle turned to talk to her. She was smiling, so maybe they hadn’t been talking about her. Maybe it was just one of those friend-things. Or maybe they’d been saying terrible things about her and were just pretending to like her to spare her feelings. But that didn’t make sense.
Why would Gabrielle offer to carry her if she didn’t like her?
Quickly, she shook her head. “N-no I’m fine, really. I—I need more exercise anyway and. . . it’s not that much further. I can—I can see it, actually,” she insisted, pointing a little ways ahead. The information booth stood tall with pamphlets and other fliers, and of course, a woman Emmeline vaguely recognized because of the clothes she was wearing and the way she was standing. . . among a few other things, of course.
Her mom. Great—the cat was going to be out of the bag unless she could act fast enough—but nope. Her mother acted faster.
“Sweetie! There you are!” she exclaimed once she’d spotted her daughter. She jogged over and past Gabrielle and Hayden to embrace her long-lost daughter. Emmeline fought the urge to cry tears of relief and managed it quite well, instead just hugging her mom like a normal person. “Are you alright? I was so worried! I turned around and you were gone and I just knew—”
“I’m fine," Emmeline assured her, interrupting before things could just get out of hand. She pulled away from her mom and indicated to the two people standing nearby. “Gabrielle and Hayden kept me company.”

tagged: failtwin, craycray. time: May 8th 2012, 17:00 speech: hayden. notes: knight is posting after me! "Yeah, we could totally carry you if you wanted us to." Even if Gabi had been half-joking, Hayden was completely serious. He was big and tall, after all, and could definitely lift Emmie for quite a distance if he tried. But he grinned as Emmie pointed out the information booth, and immediately started darting towards it at full speed. "Come on, we're almost here! I bet Joan will be totally glad to see you--"
“Sweetie! There you are!”
A woman's voice rang out loud and clear across the information center, and Hayden whirled around to see a lady. He could see the family resemblance, actually; she had the same nose, the same eyes. And then the next thought that crossed his mind was:
Wow, Emmie sure had a really old sister.
But of course he wasn't going to say that out loud, though his eyes did meet Gabi's for a moment before he turned towards the woman. "Hi," Hayden said as Emmie introduced the two of them, beaming at the older lady as he stuck out his hand. Polite, but confident, just the way he had been told that he should give a handshake. "Nice to meet you. I'm Hayden, and you must be Joan! Emmie's told us plenty about you." And then, to Emmie:
"We- we should hang out again," he smiled. "That was fun."

Aww boo, Emmie didn't want a lift. Oh well, no matter; maybe next time. Because there was definitely going to be a next time, you could be sure of that. The information desk finally came into view, and a blonde woman that had to be Sloan came rushing up to Emmie and pulled her into a hug. Aww, it was enough to bring tears to your eyes! Except Gabi sold her tear ducts when she was a child, so.
She met Hayden's eyes as the pair hugged it out and shrugged in reply; like Hayden was really one to talk. His older sister was, like, a bajillion years older than him. She was a dinosaur. An old, decrepit, ancient dinosaur that nobody liked and should just go back to the Mesozoic where she belonged. When the conversation turned to them, Gabi shot a beaming grin at the older lady and gave her a jaunty wave. "Hiyo!" She greeted her cheerily, rocking back on her heels as she watched Hayden step forward to shake hands. Ah, yes, all's well that ends well. What a happy ending to this tale-
A loud squawk from the information desk interrupted Gabi's thoughts. She turned her eyes on the booth curiously, as the man behind the counter held a walkie talkie up to his ear and turned up the volume.
"... keep your eye out for a tall brunette girl, she was harassing the fox in the food court and..."
For about a second, time seemed to stand still as Gabi froze in place, realization slowly dawning on her. The man behind the desk looked up and met her eyes, and that's when she knew it was game over. The cat was out of the bag. Well, at least they managed to get Emmie to the desk without too many mishaps, right? Haha, he was saying something into his walkie talkie in reply now. Hahahahaha---
Time to skedaddle.
"Sorry to have to run, but something came up and we've gotta go!" Gabi hurriedly said, eyes never leaving the man as he began to walk out from behind the desk. Oh shit oh shit they had better get a move on it. Turning around, Gabi began running back the way they came, shouting over her shoulder a cheerful, "Bye MnM! See you later!"
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!1

He wanted to hang out? Didn’t that mean that Gabrielle would want to hang out again, too? Maybe they did really think of her as their friend, after all. “I’d—I’d like that,” she agreed, glancing up at her mom as if looking for approval.
It seemed that if they’d figured out this was her mom and not her sister, they weren’t saying anything.
Maybe they just thought her sister was really old. That was possible, right?
Her mom sighed in relief and was smiling a little too widely. She was probably excited that Emmeline had managed to make some friends instead of have a complete mental breakdown when she realized she had gotten separated from her mom. “Hayden and Gabrielle?” she repeated, shaking Hayden’s hand. What a lovely young man. “Thank you for watching over Emmeline!”
Though she didn’t know it, Emmeline was relieved. Her mom could have just as easily said “thanks for watching over my daughter” but didn’t. It was so close and Emmeline almost didn’t realize it.
Gabrielle started to get fidgety and bid her farewell, taking Hayden with her. Emmeline gave them her own hasty good-bye, then turned to leave with her mother. They were momentarily interrupted when one of the information guards went running past them. Emmeline sighed. They probably caught on to those two. At least she’d found her mom before that happened.
“Oh, wait,” Emmeline gasped. She hadn’t gotten either of their numbers. She stopped and looked around, but they had already disappeared. Her heart sank in her chest. Well, so much for that notion. They hadn’t even bothered to get her number and she had completely forgotten to ask. Maybe they had just been being nice. She told her mom to never mind it, then followed her to the car and they were on their way home.
