words | 384 | For the past two weeks, he had been a little stressed. Even he was willing to admit that the beginning of the month had come with something not so… normal? It was hard to explain, and he had still been trying to push aside the idea that it had happened when he knew that it had. Thankfully, it was getting easier to explain away as a weird dream by the day. The past few days had, after all, brought him a few actual weird dreams that he didn't really care for.
At first he figured that he had been overhearing the television or something while he slept, but who really knew. It was causing him to sleep a little less than his already light sleep schedule, and his only regret in this was that he was tired enough to start seeing things. It really wasn't that bad, as it hadn't been going on for very long. It wasn't really effecting him too much. It was just troublesome to him because it was a thing at all. While some people would have found odd dreams interesting, this wasn't his idea of fun.
Today actually was a day where he was scheduled to help around his parent's shop. However, he was still in the dilemma of not really having much to do while there. His parents were out running some sort of errands and they left him with a list of chores that he had been quick to busy himself with that morning. Which… unfortunately meant that he finished everything a bit more quickly than he would've liked. He was back to sitting quietly at the store's counter with Mumford & Sons playing on the computer and knitting needles in hand. If nothing else, he could at least try to get some of his knitting finished.
Knit one, purl two, knit one, purl two, knit one, purl one, knit one, purl one, knit one...
He stopped himself before he went very far past his mistake in counting. Kyu-Sik pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. Perhaps he actually needed to take a day off for once. That's when he found himself saved by the bell of the front door. "Hello," he said automatically, lifting his head and setting the knitting needles down on the counter. |

The light jingle of bells filled the silent shop as a young boy pushed open the door, inviting inside a gentle breeze. Canis didn’t lift his head when the boy knitting behind the counter welcomed him, and instead sought out a place in the shop far away from him. He didn’t want to be around people at the moment. He couldn’t be around people. Not with what he had in mind.
His trembling hands clenched into fists inside his coat pockets. The coat was light, but still odd as it wasn’t very chilly outside, and there was no reason he couldn’t go out with just a long-sleeved shirt.
There was an orange backpack slung over one shoulder. It was small and unassuming, but to Canis it felt like a bright neon light attached to his back. The sight of an adolescent carrying a bag around wasn’t a strange one, but it made his forehead sweat and his hands clammy.
He shuffled down the aisles without making a creak. He’d chosen a very poor place to shoplift. There were instrument repair tools, uninteresting books and a whole bunch of other things he couldn’t recognize. If he walked down a little farther, he’d find a rack of music CDs, but it was in the knitter boy’s plain view.
He rationalized with himself. He could always turn around; go back to his stepmother’s disapproving gaze, his father’s cold shoulder, his stepbrother’s tepid kindness. But the thought only made his stomach churn even more.
He started for the exit, sighing to himself. He was an indecisive coward who couldn’t grow a pair. His eyes flitted about the shop, and the corner of his lip twitched as he stopped in front of the CDs. His head was still lowered, and when the alternative crossed his mind, he made up his mind right there.
He reached for a CD and clutched it with both hands, eyes wide. He hadn’t done anything yet, but a foreboding wave of guilt was hanging over his head, waiting to crash down on top of his head. He couldn’t move. How did he look to the knitter boy? Could he see the guilt plain on his face, his agonized expression?
Time stood still as he stood erect, his feet nailed to the floor.

words | 326 | No hello back from the customer that walked in the door. In fact, Kyu-Sik was given no reply at all. Though, there was a boy who appeared to be a few years younger than himself. When most people walked in that weren't just tourists they tended to come up to the counter right away with whatever they needed. Or they would at least go right to what they were looking for in the room, since it was all fairly well laid out. However, this boy was doing neither of those things and he seemed a little out of place. This lead Kyu-Sik to the conclusion that the younger boy could have very well been a tourist who had been wandering from shop to shop for nothing in particular.
Yes, that made sense. It was easy enough to doubt that anyone who actually lived in Los Angeles would be walking around in a jacket when it was nearly summer. The book bag was a bit more forgivable because he was likely a student, but maybe he was using it to carry around souvenirs or something like that. Being in Koreatown also meant that the last shopkeep he met may not have necessarily been the best with English. Being yelled at, even welcomingly, by old Korean ladies in a small shop would explain why the boy seemed so nervous now. At least that's what Kyu-Sik was assuming.
He watched him for a moment, expecting there to be questions or comments eventually. However, nothing came and the black-haired male wasn't about to be the very sort of overbearing shopkeep he tended to avoid himself. He was all for leaving the customer to browse as they pleased. So, he just picked up his knitting needles again instead of getting up to help him.
"Let me know if you need help with anything," he said, glancing up one last time. Then, he started carefully unraveling those few mistakes he had made. |

The plastic CD case was warm in his moist palms. The front cover was a disastrous splash of blue, pink and yellow, and had Canis been in his right mind, he’d have whipped the abomination at the floor and crushed it under his sneakers.
The wave of guilt came crashing down on him, for one long, agonizing second, all he could hear was the heavy throbbing of his heart in his ears. It was followed by the wail of police sirens, blinding flashes of red and blue, his father finally acknowledging his presence, but with the most disapproving gaze a parent could give to a child. It sent a frigid shiver down his spine, and he could have sworn goose bumps appeared on his arms, even though the heat beneath his outrageous attire was nearing unbearable.
He was ripped from his reverie when the sound of plastic clattering on the floor reached his ears, and he looked up with a start. The plastic CD case was at his feet, begging to be picked up. His eye twitched. There was no point in prolonging the moment.
He snatched the CD case with one hand, grabbing two more with his other, and ran for the exit. Shoving them into the orange bag, he pulled open the door, ringing the bells once more, and sprinted down the sidewalk.
Why? The question repeated itself over and over as he carried himself farther away from the instrument repair shop. He didn’t look back.

Another pause. Kyu-Sik's eyes had been down at his hands until he heard the suspicious shuffling of CD cases and a bag. He glanced up soon enough to see Canis stuffing away the discs and running out the door. And… there went the customer who was apparently not much of a customer at all.
"Really." Did that really just happen? Kyu-Sik frowned and felt a bit like smacking his head against the counter's surface. Well, he had been wrong. The boy was nervous because he had apparently been planning to steal a few CDs, not because he was a tourist. At first he thought this was some sort of joke. It had to have been. They were running an instrument repair shop, not a music store. That much was obvious not only by the sign outside, but also by the contents of the building. Their selection of CDs was extremely minimal and limited to whatever his parents' friends suggested they sell. Most of it was classic, with a few odd extras in the mix he didn't always approve of. It was just not the sort of place you went to if you were interested in stealing CDs, and thus the action was absolutely baffling. If he was stealing to sell them elsewhere, wouldn't it have made more sense to take one of the instruments lying around?
Either way, the Korean male knew that this was on his head, as he was the one in charge of the shop. He wasn't about to just let this happen without doing anything at all. With a sigh, he tossed the knitting needles to the counter again, grabbed the store keys from the drawer, and hurried to follow. He was sure to lock the door behind him as he left the building, of course.
Though he had never been the athletic sort, he had thankfully been blessed with long legs. It took a quick look in the right direction and a little bit of effort, but he managed to catch up to the young thief well enough. "Hey!" He hadn't expected the boy to stop on his own, but that was Canis's only warning. He reached to grab on to the back of the boy's jacket. His tone afterward couldn't disguise how genuinely confused he was by the other. "What are you doing?" |

The soles of his feet pounded into the concrete as he sped along. With a sickening twist in his stomach, he realized—with horror—the stupidity of his actions. Why did he just steal a couple of measly CDs? Well, there was no time to think about that now.
A voice called out to him from somewhere behind him. It was distant, but it was like shooting a bullet through his back.
Spurred on by fear, his pace accelerated. Sweat ran down the sides of his face. The thought to shrug off his coat crossed his mind, but before he could think about anything else, a hand tugged at the hem of his coat, pulling him backwards and to an abrupt stop.
It was the knitter boy, clearly exasperated, demanding to know what he was doing.
He didn’t say anything. He was plagued by thoughts of prison, the dilapidated walls, a hard bed, a broken toilet. . . .
I don’t know what I’m doing, he thought, but he pressed his lips together, determined to betray no words to the man. He didn’t know what to say, anyway. After a brief moment of silence, he spoke.
“Let go of me,” he said, wrenching free from the boy’s grasp. He extracted the orange bag from his shoulder and threw it at the knitter boy, taking a few steps backward. Could he really get away with an attempt to shoplift? He had to try. “I don’t want it anyway. Take it.”
It was only when he turned around to run when he realized what he had actually done. His things were in the bag—not just the stolen music CDs. His change of clothes, food, a bottle of water and bills that he’d stolen from his mother’s purse. How was he going to run away from home without that bag?
“Wait, no! Give me back the bag!” He whirled around on the balls of his feet, reaching for the bag.

words | 377 | Some victory was found, but oh how Kyu-Sik was unamused. He couldn't even manage a smile when he caught his thief. There was a moment of silence that passed between them as he waited for an answer, but he never really got one. Instead, he was yelled at and then had the boy's bag tossed at him. He could only imagine what this must've looked like to any others walking down the street. The older of the two just rolled his eyes and took the bag. Then, of course, dug out the CDs that had been taken from him from the not-so-odd assortment of items.
A piano concerto, a tutorial, and… a Kidz Bop CD. "Really..." Why did this boy steal it and also why did his parents even have that in their store? Perhaps he had been spending more time at the tailor's than he thought, but it wasn't really his place to question what they did and didn't sell. He found himself just shaking his head before the boy started demanding for his bag back.
Once again, he found himself thankful for his height. Kyu-Sik had never been a bully despite the fact he hadn't been the most friendly person in school. However, that didn't mean he felt any guilt about playing keep away when the rare time actually came for it. He lifted the bag above his head, out of the other boy's immediate reach. There was just a bit less than a foot in their height difference, but he was making it clear he wasn't going to return the bag just yet even if the other could try and jump for it.
"I asked you a question," he insisted calmly. He wasn't mad at the other boy. A little confused and tired, yes, but not angry about what had happened. It didn't seem worth calling the police over because he was dealing with someone younger than him and there wasn't much damage done. He had the CDs back in his hand if nothing else. Kyu-Sik just wanted to be sure no one had put him up to it before he let him go and returned back the shop. "What are you doing? If you don't want these, then why did you take them?" |

Canis pulled away from the knitter boy, keeping a good amount of distance between the two of them. He was breathing hard, his hands clenched into fists in anger, both at the boy and at himself.
His eyes lingered on the orange bag, dangling in the air by the knitter boy’s long, slender arms. He wondered if he’d be able to leap and, gambling on his recent deftness, snatch the bag from the boy’s hands and run away. But he proved to be quick on his feet, and he’d only be caught once more, unless he managed to coalesce with the moving Los Angeles crowd.
“W-What does it matter to you?” he asked, stammering over his own words, uncertain of his own intentions. He couldn’t answer the boy’s questions, more because he didn’t know why he was doing what he was doing. He swallowed, swiping at the damp strands of brown hair that stuck to his face.
“I’ll give back the CDs. Just give me back the bag.” He tried to seem intimidating, to coat his words with malice and venom, like he always did. But, for some reason, it seemed that he was losing his touch. “Or I’ll take it from you. I swear it.” He gritted his teeth together, his rationality slipping away, hanging on by a single, flimsy thread.

words | 248 | Kyu-Sik shook his head at the boy, though he couldn't help but think the other was starting to look a bit more like a nervous stray dog being backed into a corner now. For a moment, Kyu-Sik was waiting for the pounce. To which the bag would have just been nonchalantly dropped to the ground. Until that moment or until the moment he was given a better response, the bag was staying in his hand. He was unimpressed by the threat and didn't particularly care enough to make a fight over the matter. "And I swear that I can still call the cops," he replied with a sigh. "I would rather not waste someone's time with this."
Koreatown wasn't the best neighborhood in Los Angeles, but it wasn't one of the worst anymore. He liked to imagine the police had better places to be and better things to do with their time than to deal with a petty theft done by a weird teenage boy. This was a situation he felt was best dealt with by himself, as much as he wasn't really sure what was wrong with the other. "To be perfectly honest, it doesn't matter to me. I just want to make sure that you don't come in to steal something stupid again and that no one else is planning to." It was as simple as that. Kyu-Sik had no problem admitting it.

Canis glared at the knitter boy with child-like stubbornness. “The cops don’t scare me,” he said, the knuckles on his fists white and trembling. And though his posture was feral, as though he were ready to pounce, he was taut with worry, with creases appearing on his forehead.
He dug his heels into the hard pavement, seriously considering an aerial assault. He needed that bag. All thoughts about wailing police sirens and flashing lights erased themselves from Canis’s mind, and his only goal was to get the bag back. If he were in a normal state of mind, he’d realize that he only needed to offer a smidgen of his dignity to get his bag back, but he was beyond caring. His resolve solidified, reflected in the dull, apathetic fire alight in his eyes.
“Just. Give. It. Back.” He took a heavy step toward the knitter boy, no longer afraid of the consequences. There was a nagging thought at the back of his mind that told him he could’ve gone through the transaction like a sane person, could’ve promised that he wouldn’t try to steal. But the knitter boy's condescending gaze struck a raw nerve deep inside him. Impatience flared throughout him.
He didn’t want to be reasonable. He wanted the bag. Now.
And then he lunged, with the agility that would’ve surprised a stalking cheetah, an outstretched arm reaching for the orange bag.

words | 277 | He waited for a response, but he really should've known he wasn't going to get a good one that easily. If someone was unreasonable enough to steal something as bad as a Kidz Bop CD from a business that wasn't even focused on selling CDs, then that someone was probably not thinking reasonably enough to give a good answer anyway. Instead, what he was met with was the boy's lack of fear in the cops. It was said, yes, but this kid looked young and Kyu-Sik was doubting if he really understood the consequences of what he was doing or saying. And there was the attack Kyu-Sik had been expecting. However, it happened a bit too quickly for him to react smoothly. He stumbled back a few steps before willingly releasing his grip on the bag. The fire in Canis's eyes was met by a total lack of from Kyu-Sik. He had gone into this knowing where he would draw the line himself, as he just didn't have the time to waste on the matter. Well, okay, he did have some free time. However, he had better things he could be doing. At least his knitting was productive, while this was certainly going nowhere. He had accomplished his immediate goal and maybe that was good enough in a situation like this. " Let me make one thing clear," the Korean boy began, recovering from Canis's pounce and straightening his posture. " I don't want to see you in that store again, do you understand?" A next time wouldn't be tolerated, though he hoped the boy was at least smart enough not to rob the same place more than once. (ooc: CANIS WHY <3) |

The knitter boy stumbled backwards, dropping the bag in what Canis presumed to be mute surprise. The uninterested look never left his face. Canis ground his teeth together, but it didn’t halt his movement. Snagging the bag, he wove around the knitter boy and back to where he had first stood. In just a few seconds, they were back where they had started, but Canis now had the orange bag slung over his narrow shoulders, breathing hard. He watched as the knitter boy straightened and, standing erect, instructed him to not pull his stunt again. Canis didn’t need to be told that. Swinging the bag from over his shoulder into the cradle of his hands, he unzipped the orange bag, grabbed the three abominable CDs that he never wanted in the first place, and tossed them to the knitter boy’s feet. His eyes never left his face, the flames flickering and settling. In a few more minutes, they’d be glazed over in absent thought once more. Canis stared at the knitter boy for a few more seconds before shaking his head and turning around on his heels. “It’s a stupid store, anyway.” He began to walk. And, without turning back, he transitioned into a steady jog. And then he was sprinting down the street, feeling small, and cold, and tired and humiliated. But, little did the knitter boy know, he didn’t return home that day. Maybe he'd find out soon. On the news, perhaps, a report would be sent in, a report for a missing boy with mousy brown hair wearing a constant mask of apathy. Maybe the knitter boy would recognize him. But for now it would be filed at the back of his mind as a strange incident that had occurred on the 12th of May. KYU-SIK MOON
