I Got a figure like a pinup Got a figure like a doll Don’t care if you think I’m dumb I don’t care at all Candy bear sweetie pie wanna be adored I’m the girl you’d die for I’ll chew you up and I’ll spit you out Cause that’s what young love is all about So pull me closer, and kiss me hard I’m gonna pop your bubblegum heart I’m miss sugar pink liquor, liquor lips Hit me with your sweet love, steal me with a kiss. BUBBLEGUM BITCHThis was her first. Allison couldn't say that about a lot of things anymore, but sitting here in a cafe by herself waiting for a person she'd never spoken to face-to-face was definitely something new. Sure, responding to emails and pm's sent to her channel was common courtesy. What kind of rude person would she be if she just ignored them? Those messages usually ended with her reply or she'd have conversations with people for days just for them to slowly, slowly fade away.
It really was a downer when people poofed off like that.
This was a special case though. They've been talking non-stop for practically months now and this meeting was bound to happen one way or another.
All it took was a time, a date, a place and a lot of convincing.
That's how she ended up here, alone, at a table outside, waiting, for a person who's gender she couldn't even confirm. The urge to slam her forehead into the table was growing the more she thought about what she was doing. Allison Summers had planned to meet up with a complete strange because they had been emailing each other for a couple months. The epitome of genius was sitting in Java Cafe today. A groan rumbled in the back of her throat as she tried to shrink into the comfort of her green hoodie.
This was dumb, no this was beyond dumb. This was stupid, nope even worse than that but she couldn't even think of a worse word. What time was it anyway?
The girl with bunny ears pulled out her phone just to have and let her eyes flicker over the blinking digits in the top-right corner. She sighed and unlocked her screen flipping through apps. When her phone's on Silent she had no ringtone, well isn't that interesting. For god's sake, she didn't even get a good look at the time. Checking again wasn't even worth the effort so that left her with one option, and one option only.
Allison nose-dived into the table and let out the smallest of Ouch's when bone met plastic. When the time came and she got over this moment of pitifulness, she might as well get food. Until then she was going to continue her make-out session with the cafe table. The intense lip-lock was only cut-short by the sound of footsteps coming in her direction.
At least she could scrape up enough dignity to lift her head up. Tilting her head she peered up at her guest. That's definitely not a fat, greasy 40-year old. Her eyes narrowed slightly staring the girl down, no need to get her hopes her just yet. "Emmeline?"Saturday, May 12th at 12:37.

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Her dad had been the skeptical one. Her mother had encouraged the meeting and seemed extremely happy about it. Even more excited than Emmeline, but Emmeline really couldn’t be excited about anything recently. Especially meeting someone new, even if she had been talking to them for several months now. She should be excited, though. This person was completely famous on the internet—at least, Emmeline thought she was famous. Maybe she was bias because she liked Allison’s videos. But this was still outside of her comfort box.
Way out.
Emmeline’s father had been convinced that this was some scummy forty-year-old who only wanted to take advantage of her, but her mother had vouched. She’d shown her husband the videos—or rather, forced Emmeline too. Truth be told, she would have liked a reason to get out of this whole thing. New people scared her. And what if she couldn’t recognize her? Allison always wore cute little animal ears. . . .
Surely there wouldn’t be more than one of those at the café?
It was California, though, so you never really knew. . . .
Her mother dropped her off outside of the café and wished her the best of luck, told her how proud she was of her little girl going out and making friends and meeting people. It embarrassed Emmeline, but thankfully she was alone in the car and no one could hear her mother fawn over her from outside. Emmeline waited until traffic cleared, then jumped out of the car and scurried to the café.
The little bell rang over the door and it startled Emmeline for a second. She always felt like when that bell went off, everyone turned to look at her, to see who was making such a ruckus on their nice day in the café working on their crosswords and their business plans and book writing. However that was never the case, but she always felt like it. Even if just the employees turned to greet her, that felt like the café to her—a bunch of strange faces staring at her.
After getting over herself and fighting the urge to run right back out the door, Emmeline took a deep breath, clutched her purse close to her chest, and scanned the tables to look for who she was meeting. A pair of rabbit-ears stood out among the crowd and she zeroed in on that figure.
Short blonde hair, animal ears—it could only be her, right? She couldn’t read the face even if it wasn’t smashed against the table top—oh no. Maybe she was ill. Emmeline fretted for a moment, shifting her weight from foot to foot, wondering if she had made this poor girl come out when she was sick just to come meet her. No no, Allison surely had better things to do—this was selfish of her! Totally and utterly selfish! This internet idol probably thought she was trash!
Swallowing hard, Emmeline fought back that welling panic and strode to where the girl sat, determined to apologize and tell her she didn’t have to sit here with her if she didn’t need to.
Her approach was noticed and Allison sat up. That froze Emmeline in her spot and she held her breath without realizing it, then let it out slowly to nod her affirmation. “Y-yes. Y-You’re Allison, right? I—I hope I’m not late. . . My—my mom drives kind of slow and—I know you’re probably busy. . . ,” she greeted the girl, feeling as nervous as she probably looked. Was she wearing the right clothes for a new friend meeting? Her mom had helped pick out her skirt and blouse, and she’d done her hair up—but it wasn’t a date or anything so why should it matter. . . .
Oh she probably looked like she was trying too hard!
Cursing herself inwardly, Emmeline forced a smile and continued to speak softly. “I—I hope I haven’t, like, made you go out of your way or, um, anything.” She forced herself to stop that awful stammering and tried to make complete sentences. “Are—are you feeling well? I, uh, saw you with your, uh, head down and. . . . Um. Yeah. . . .”
If she could have, Emmeline would have kicked herself.

BUBBLEGUM BITCHThe kawaiiness of the girl in front of her was literally off-the-charts. No need for bad first impressions now. Sky-rocketing out of her car, she popped up onto her feet and brought forth her biggest and brightest smile. As much as she wanted to reassure Emmeline that there was nothing wrong, she couldn't break out of her trance. She stutters! This was every tsundere's dream. Pfft, not that she was one, pfft, who told you that, pfft, completely crazy idea, pfft. Probably best, for her sake, not to linger on this thought.
It was time for action! Allison was going to do something…really soon…maybe right after this sentence....or right after she's finished stuttering….dear god this is cute. Okay, was she finished? Yep, she was finished. Time to get this show on the road. Her arms flew open as her massive smile only grew bigger. Allison had her arms around Emmeline in seconds and didn't even bother warning her about the barrage of words about to pour out from her mouth. "Allison Summers at your service! I just came early so don't you worry about that. I was really excited to meet you and forgot to watch the clock I suppose." With a hand on her hip, she flicked her wrist in the other girl's direction. "P-leaaaase, I'm honestly not that busy. you look awesome by the way, out-did me which I won't let happen next time." A playful wink tossed at the end made it seem like less of a challenge but it was, it definitely was."Don't worry about me." That romantic rendezvous with the table was a very low point in her life. "I was just going through a phase and sorry I'm talking so fast and rambling and other stuff I do that when I'm excited or nervous, not going to tell you which I am right now because that would be less fun" Inhaling deeply Allison brought back her huge smile. "Long story short, thank god you're not ugly!" It took her a second to process her words but when she did the happy glint in her eyes froze. Fix this, fix this and be smooth about it. "Uhhh." An awkward chuckle to cover up her extremely obvious brain-fart was her first try at trying to be slick, not going too well so far. Her grip slackened slightly as she buried a pink face into Emmeline's shoulder. "I mean I expected someone rounder," Obese actually. "a tad older," Mid-to-late sixties tops. "and just a little more perverse." Convicted sexual offender at the least. "You're not what I expected." she said, her voice jumping an octave. Ahhhh, her best-friend desperation has decided to rear its beautiful head. Leaning away, she held the girl at arm's length. Allison could feel underused muscles in her face work their magic and making her giant grin into more of a giant grimace. "Hi." she said with a shrug letting her hands slip off Emmeline's shoulders. "I'm sorry," Her head flopped to the right. "I'm bad at this. I don't usually meet people," She waved her arms around wildly. "like this." she finished with another long sigh. This will be a story to tell the grandkids one day. As if this day couldn't get any better, all her jerking about made a strand of her hair fall, right in front of her face, smack-dab between her eyes. "C'mon!" Glaring at it didn't help but then again, cross-eyed glaring probably isn't all that scary. Telepathic powers would be super useful at times like this.
Raising her hands up in defeat Allison gestured to the table with her head. "Would you like to take a seat before you have to witness me acting dumber?" An apologetic smile spread across her face as she patted Emmeline's shoulder. "Order whatever you like. It's on me, buddy." Pulling out the chair closest she gestured to it before going around to the other side. It didn't take long for her to have butt comfortably planted onto the seat. Allison's always been quite the charmer at times like this. Saturday, May 12th at 12:37.

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Emmeline felt like a deer trapped in headlights. Her entire body went completely rigid when the girl got up out of her seat to wrap her arms around her. She wasn’t a stranger to hugs by any means, but she was used to her mother hugging her—occasionally her father. Not complete strangers. Emmeline wasn’t sure what to do; hug back? Just stand there like a lemon? Eventually she opted to just kind of awkwardly lifting her arms up in a half-hug. . . thing.
Allison talked a mile a minute and Emmeline found herself unable to get more than a few syllables in edge-wise, but she didn’t mind. She figured that so long as someone else was talking, she didn’t need to be. Let Allison do all the talking—it didn’t bother her.
She managed a smile. So she wasn’t late—Allison had been early. But—wasn’t that the line everyone in an anime used? That they were just early? Maybe she was actually late and Allison was trying to spare her feelings. Oh she wished she had glanced at the clock before she got out of the car—she hadn’t the chance to check her phone yet, and her mom just drove so slow sometimes. Not like her dad—her dad was a speed demon! Emmeline managed to find the time to say “I’m glad,” before Allison was off again.
A red hue started to speckle Emmeline’s cheeks and for a brief moment, she completely missed a few rants from the Allison—she’d complimented her! A famous person complimented her! She didn’t even mind that this girl didn’t seem to have any real taste for personal space. The one thing Emmeline worried the most about was that people would think she was ugly, or fake, or trying too hard—but she seemed to have pulled it off!
Her mood lifted considerably—Allison liked her! She really did like her!—she shook her head a little bit. “No—I don’t mind,” she murmured. Allison didn’t need to apologize for anything, least of all for talking. She was taken a little off guard when Allison mentioned something about not being ugly.
So she really did think she was pretty! Or at least not ugly!
It was a start! Emmeline would take it!
It seemed that Allison had been expecting around the same type of person that her dad had been. Some fat old pervert. Those weren’t quite his own words but it was probably close enough. Emmeline actually let out a little giggle. It was something she wasn’t to—not around other people. She usually giggled while watching a funny video alone in her room, not when other people were around. “My dad thought that’s who I was going to meet.”
Well this was going better than expected. Allison was doing most of the talking, she seemed to really like Emmeline, and Emmeline was actually pretty happy she had decided to go along with this little meeting. Maybe she was going to have a real friend.
“I don’t usually meet people either,” she assured Allison with a shy twist of her torso. She left a word hanging in her mind—ever. She didn’t usually meet people. . . ever. But she just let it sit there unsaid, a little tidbit for her mind. She would probably replay this conversation several times in her head. But it would be a good conversation—not one of those wistful conversation where she wished she was braver.
When offered, Emmeline sat down and set her purse down under her seat—the strap wasn’t long enough to drape over the chair. “Are you sure?” she asked when told to offer something. “I brought some money with me so you really don’t have to.” The stuttering! It was gone! She could complete a sentence without having to try a couple times! And she could feel a smile on her face—a real smile, not a fake, forced one!
She tried her hardest to commit Allison’s face to memory, even if she knew she couldn’t.

BUBBLEGUM BITCHShe grabbed the edge of her chair and inched her way forward until her chest was pressed up against the table. Allison leaned forward and propping her elbows on the table and letting her titled head rest on her palms. She stared down the girl, as kindly as that can be. Pretty but weren't all blondes? A pasty complexion though but she probably just needed some sun or was an avid abuser of sunscreen. They should totally go to the beach sometime. Allison would be so stoked for bikini shopping.
Once she was happy with her inspection of sorts her blank expression transformed into a smile once again. How was she supposed to respond to that?…Allison meant she didn't meet strangers but Emmeline seemed to be talking about something a tad more depressing. If all else fails ignore it. By the time she had something good to say, Emmeline was already sitting down talking about something else. Food? Yeah food but yeah she'd have to hold on for a minute.
Allison hopped back few sentences and crinkled her nose at Emmeline. "You know I definitely have to meet you Dad. I don't want him thinking that I'm some kind of old fart," Her cheeks puffed out with hot air making her look more hamster than human. She tilted her head down and pressed a finger to her bottom lip. "because I'm actually super adorable." Allison even batted her eyelashes for good measure.
She couldn't her cheeks big for much longer. The burning in her cheeks was getting to be a bit much. She tried to keep it going for a few more second but the air came out all on its own. "Owie," Her fingers went up to massage her sore cheeks. At least now she had a perfect excuse to pay for their food. What's better for pain than ice and ice cream was good enough in her book. "It's fine I need to order a sundae anyway so we can spilt it." By the end of her sentence she had her face squished together with her hands. Well that was much better.
Though it did more bad than good on her side, she forced herself to smile wider as she gave the girl a wink. "Next time we got out," There would definitely be a next time considering she wasn't a creep. "You can pay."
After a bout of excessive arm-waving she eventually got a waiter over to their table. Her friends had totally lied about this guy too. 'Allison, he's so your type' yeah right "Uuuuuuuh," As she thought her eyes flipped between squinting and being wide-open repeatedly as if that somehow forced her brain to work faster. "I'll take hot chocolate with extra sugar, and extra marshmallows well extra everything really. I hope you have marshmallows, I guessssss it will be okay if you didn't. I'll also take a slice of chocolate cake and any type of pie and I do mean any." She ran over her order and compared it to the hunger in her stomach. Yep, more than enough room for that sundae. Java Cafe is always nearby when she's hungry. "Your turn!" she chirped. "Oh, and you can choose the sundae flavor I'm open to anything."
Did she sound fat? That did seem like a lot of food. At least she wasn't getting any burgers but she knew after this she was so hitting the gym.
She leaned back into her chair and watched Emmeline expectantly. Okay, she knew she was forgetting something. "Pause!" she said holding up her hands. She turned towards the waiter with a smile. "Make that large everything, please." Sitting back in her original position she went back to watching Emmie. She let her arms fall back into lap and gave them both a sharp nod. "Resume."

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Another giggle slipped out and Emmeline moved her hand slightly to cover her mouth. She was having fun, and with her new best friend—yes, best friend. Emmeline already had it in her head that she and Allison were going to be the best of friends together, maybe even forever. That was her way—find that one person who seemed to like her and cling to them as hard as she could, and never let them go. Well—not never. If Allison got irate enough or told her go away, Emmeline would, with her tail tucked neatly between her legs, and she probably wouldn’t come out of her room for months.
But that wouldn’t happen. She had a good feeling about Allison. A great feeling, really.
“I was surprised he didn’t, uh, come with me to drop me off,” she replied, tipping over a salt shaker onto one edge with her finger and making it wobble back and forth. “But he has to work a lot. Mom and I, uh, managed to, mm. . . convince him that you were—legit. With your videos.”
Well—so she couldn’t quite make it through larger bouts of speech without having to stop and think every now and again. It had been a while since she had had a real conversation with someone. The last time was when she had gotten lost at the mall and those two nice people had helped her find her mom, but she had been so disgruntled by the whole situation that she hadn’t done a lot of talking let alone held a real, meaningful conversation with Hayden and Gabi.
Bleh. She just wanted to push that whole day out of her head.
Emmeline nodded and picked up the little laminated menu to look through it real quick. “That sounds fair,” she agreed with a smile. Perfectly fair—she was sure her mom wouldn’t mind. She didn’t have a job or anything, but her parents gave her an allowance so long as she helped out around the house—after all that was where she spent most of her time. The least she could do was chores.
Finally, a waiter was flagged over by some pro choreography from Allison. She was the first person to order, so Emmeline took the time to make out her order. Though not hungry, she was feeling peckish, so when it was her turn, she set down the menu and smiled at the waiter. Before she even had her mouth open, Allison interrupted and she promptly closed her mouth, smiling sheepishly. Allison just added a size to her orders, and then Emmeline looked back up at the waiter. The poor girl still couldn’t really make eye contact with anyone, though she found it a little easier to at least look at Allison’s face instead of her collarbones, so her gaze fell to something behind the waiter.
“Um, I would like—uh, a blueberry muffin and, um, an iced coffee, um. . . mocha, please.” She paused for a second, remembering the sundae. What kind of flavor. Emmeline swiftly picked up her little menu and buried her nose in it for a second before coming back up. “The uh—oh! Butter pecan. Please. If that’s okay.”
Emmeline looked to Allison now, afraid she had overstepped her boundaries.
The waiter carried on and Emmeline pushed her menu over to the side, just in case they wanted to order something else. She swallowed hard and turned to Allison with a question that was just burning her tongue. She shifted in her chair nervously, playing with her napkin and not looking at Allison. “Do—uh, I’m sorry—do you make any. . . uh.” Crap this was such an awkward question. She opted to just spit it out as quickly as possible. “I mean I know a lot of people do but—do you make any money from your channel?”

BUBBLEGUM BITCHButter pecan? She raised an eyebrow at the flavor. Was she surprised about the rather uncommon flavor or was she just surprised that Emmie chose it. She seemed more like a vanilla girl overall. Something simple, typical not to say that Emmeline was boring or anything more like she wasn't adventurous. Then again what did she really know about the girl. Overall, "I approve of your choice in ice cream."
Suddenly, her friend seemed a bit uncomfortable. Allison tilted her head slight and felt the edges of her teeth digging into her bottom lip. "Umm," This didn't seem to be going very well. Placing her hand on the table she started to slide it over in Emmeline's direction. She didn't get very far before what seemed to be the troubling sentence finally reared its head.
This girl was something else.
Allison threw her head back and tried to hide the laughter written all over her face. She gave Emmie's hand a pat before pushing her hair out of her face. "Yo-Yo-Yo," she couldn't even bring herself to finish her sentence. Gosh, her ribs were killing her. "Why were you so scared to ask me that?" she said between huffs and puffs. Wait, was there something wrong with her? All her laughter got caught t in her throat as she looked at Emmeline. "Am I scary?" she whispered shuffling her way into her seat.
Upright in her seat, she cleared her throat slightly before speaking. "It's honestly all for fun. It would be great to be able to make a leaving that way." Staring off to the left of Emmeline she could see the waiter returning with their food. "Ready to eat?" She was feeling it bad being all moody but she'd get over it eventually.
The smell of food was enough to cheer her up anyway. Inhaling deeply she rubbed her hands together as the food was placed in front of her. She hopped a little in her seat to see the whole surface of her cup covered in marshmallows. "Awesomesauce!" Allison tapped the glass and could feel it was cool against her finger tips. She snatched up and was sipping it lovingly with a mellow look on her face. "Why were you asking? I mean if you want to be in a episode I'd be more than happy to let you on."

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Oh great! Her awkwardness was making Allison think something was wrong! Oh why couldn’t she just be a normal person? Emmeline quickly shook her head, eyes wide. “No-no you’re not scary! I just—it can be a sensitive topic and—some people don’t like—I just didn’t want to pry,” she assured Allison, staring down at the table, her shoulders hunched up like a puppy that had been reprimanded for chewing on something it wasn’t supposed to.
She looked up slightly from the tops of her eyes and swallowed. “Sorry—I didn’t mean any offense,” she murmured, fidgeting with the hem of her jacket. Everything had been going so well. Now she’d ruined it. Absolutely ruined it. Emmeline wanted to crawl up into a hole somewhere and die, somewhere no one would be able to find her.
Like it had worked out so well the first time she’d tried that.
Allison seemed to take the question okay, but now Emmeline felt as if she had completely destroyed the little get-together. Her social skills were disgusting and now she’d lost her best friend not even five minutes after having one. She resisted the urge to make out with the table as Allison had, knowing that would just make her look even worse. Why hadn’t she asked a different question? A less prying question? But she tried to keep up the conversation—maybe she could salvage it.
But probably not. Who was she kidding. She was a worthless little girl with no social skills—or any skills to really speak of, and it was foolish of her to think anyone could be her friend. “I was just—wondering cuz. . . I know some of those—uh—youtubers. . .um. . . make a lot of money cuz they—uh, have a lot of viewers and. . . and stuff.”
Her cheeks lit up when Allison asked if she wanted to be in an episode. Emmeline looked up briefly out of surprise but quickly averted her gaze. She wasn’t worthy enough to make eye contact with anyone. Submissive to the end. She fumbled for words for a few seconds, unsure of how to respond.
Saved by the food.
Emmeline looked up long enough to thank the waiter and leaned back so he could place their food. She picked at the little muffin. Allison didn’t seem upset anymore, but Emmeline was still convinced she’d completely botched this one. And she still hadn’t answered the question. “No—I—I couldn’t be in an episode. I’m not—I’m not funny or witty—and I’m—terribly camera shy and—all that attention I—I wouldn’t be any good at it.”
Her inner brain told her it might be fun, but she just wouldn’t be able to handle that pressure.

BUBBLEGUM BITCHAt least she wasn't scary!
Though the pool of guilt settling in her stomach told her that she still didn't feel too great about herself. Emmeline didn't just look like a kicked puppy, she looked like a puppy kicked down a staircase.
With a sigh she placed her cup down on the table and covered her eyes. This was impossible. "I'm just going to cover my eyes because your face is making me feel like I murdered kittens or something."
She spaced out her fingers ever so slightly and peeked out through the small cracks. "You didn't offend me, I'm not an easily offended person. You just seemed to nervous to ask me and I don't want you to be nervous to ask me anything. I'm your open book." She closed up the gaps between her fingers with a snap and instead slid down her face to cup her hands around her mouth. This drama was no fun, no fun at all. Time to lighten the moooooood~
"Want me to let you on to a secret?" she whispered leaning a bit closer in. Allison was going to tell her anyway but saying it was a secret made it more dramatic. Pause for effect. "Focus on me. Don't think about the camera, think about what you're doing with me." Sometime during her mini-lecture of sorts she started pointing at herself. She could only assume it helped get her tip across.
"Maybe when you're in an episode, I'll get paid." she chuckled slightly at her joke but the 'Too Soon' alarm bells in her head was going off. Not like she can take it back. "C'mon we'll try it." No amount of protesting would get her to stop now. She dug out her iPhone from her pocket and unlocked it at record speeds. 14,345 pictures..hmm she should really stop taking selflies. She smiled brightly at the camera and gave her future viewers a wink.
"Heyhey Carebears, it's your Mama Bear reporting in from Java Cafe with one of my best pals," She snapped her fingers and flipped the camera being used. Now the only thing she could see on her screen was Emmeline's face. "Emmeline!" A few mock cheers and cat calls flew from her lips before she continued. "We have ordered some super fine cuisine today. And I do mean super fine, this hot chocolate is irresistible I just wish it was Winter. Woe is my life." Allison rolled eyes but then forgot the camera was still in Emmie's direction. Well oppsie. "Anyway onto the interview!"
"So Emmie, dearest, what tres bien food have you ordered today?" Tilting her head out from behind the small camera Allison flashed her a thumb's up. Everyone need encouragement at some point. That's when she noticed the lack of red dots on her screen. Her mouth formed a big 'o' as she slowly placed her phone on the table. "Guess that's the end of our episode."

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Murdered kittens? Emmeline’s eyes widened and she shook her head. She had to calm down! She had to calm down right now! She was making Allison feel terrible! Like she had murdered kittens, which was one of the worst crimes ever! Seriously should be punishable by death. She took a few deep breaths while Allison was covering her face, trying to act like a normal person by once. If only she’d succeeded that dark night—she wouldn’t be here making a fool out of herself.
When Allison moved her fingers a smidgen, Emmeline smiled ruefully and shrugged her shoulders up high. “Sorry. I’m nervous around people,” she admitted, still unable to make any sort of eye contact. Any initiation from Allison always ended with Emmeline immediately breaking contact.
Emmeline cocked her head to the side and leaned in. A secret? Allison had a secret? She did the cliché thing and glanced around real quick to make sure that no one was watching or listening, and leaned in a little closer so she could protect Allison’s secret. Why Allison would want to tell her a secret Emmeline had no idea, but maybe it was something not too important. Emmeline didn’t think she could handle a big secret of any magnitude.
But what Allison said just confused her for several seconds. Focus on Allison? That was more of a direction she was giving, not a secret. Brows furrowed, Emmeline leaned back in her seat just a tad, and was about to ask what she meant, but Allison pulled out her phone and realization crept down Emmeline’s spine.
“Why—you wouldn’t get paid for me—I’m—” Her voice caught when Allison started speaking to the phone, her general greeting to her viewers.
She swallowed hard. This was happening.
Cheeks rosy red, Emmeline’s eyes drifted to that soul-sucking lens in the back of Allison’s phone. Maybe if she didn’t look at it directly she would keep her soul. She wouldn’t watch this episode. No no, no never. She never looked good on camera—though she was suddenly glad that she had spent all that time trying to make herself look presentable out in public. There was only so much she could do with her short hair, but at least the rest of her looked great. She managed a smile, though Emmeline was pretty sure she just looked like she was snarling.
“H-hello,” she squeaked.
Emmeline couldn’t stop looking at the camera.
She was vaguely aware that Allison had asked her a question and she glanced down at her food. For some reason she couldn’t remember what it was called—oh wait. “Um—I h-have a. . . um. . . a b-b-blueberry muffin and—and a um, iced coffe. . . and—um. . . .” What kind of flavor was it?! “Mocha. . . flavored.”
The words had just enough time to get out of her mouth before Allison put her phone down. She stared for a little bit, her heart beating frantically in her chest. Allison that was the end of their episode and Emmeline swallowed hard, then took a few giant swigs of her coffee, only to cough some of it back up when it went down the wrong tube. “Ho—how was it? Did—oh. . . ,” she murmured, immediately shoved a mouthful of muffin in her mouth. That was something she didn’t want to do again.

BUBBLEGUM BITCH Emmeline better not choke. Allison decided that maybe it was better to ignore that beautiful display of coughing. Ever so slowly Allison placed her phone on the table. Her eyes jumped around the small cafe as she managed an awkward smile in Emmeline's direction. She actually didn't do that bad, she was very Emmie-like if that made any sense.
It was adorable actually! She made a note to actually make a video of Emmeline. Allison blinked and cringed ever so slightly. She also had to make a note to hit the record button. Back to her guest star. "Welllll," she said dragging out the word. "You see," Insert weird chuckle here. She was definitely having a bad day today. "It's just that," Don't forget uncomfortable neck rubbing.
Okay, she was just going to throw it out there now. Her hands came together in front of her neatly as she finally let her gaze fall on her friend. "You know how when you're making videos you have to hit the record button." She widened her eyes and tried to ooze out as much cuteness as possible. If she didn't look kawaii, she didn't know what else she could do. Allison placed her index finger on her bottom lips and rolled her eyes innocently. "Opps, might have forgot that part." She giggled as cutely as she could.
Allison knew Emmeline wouldn't be mad at her but that didn't make her feel any better, She looked like she had actually tried really hard. Making it up to her would have to be put in her list of things to do. With one last bat of her eyelashes her shoulder slumped and she fell back into the chair.
They couldn't stay here forever, that would be so very boring. Allison chewed absent-mindedly on the inside of her cheek as she thought. With a sigh she let go of the piece of cheek in between her teeth and smiled at Emmeline. "What do you want to do," The corner of her lips curled awkwardly as she shifted in her seat. "I enjoy your company as much as the next person but I think my butt is falling asleep."

She seemed nervous about something, but what did Allison have to be nervous about? Emmeline was the nervous one—there should only be one nervous person in each friendship! Otherwise nothing would ever get done!
However, the big problem seemed to be that Allison hadn’t actually been recording.
She thought about that for a second, and then genuinely giggled. That was all? But that was a good thing. Emmeline didn’t think she was ready to be on the internet quite yet. “I’m relieved,” she said after a short bout of the giggles. “I was um, caught off-guard and—um, your viewers probably don’t, um, want to hear about coffee flavors from, uh, some weird chick.”
Sure she’d had to try extra super hard to even get those few words out, but that just meant she’d be ready next time, right? “It was—uh, good practice for. . . a real episode?” she offered with a smile. It was getting easier and easier to be with Allison. Heck, she was even eating in front of her. Emmeline sometimes didn’t even like eating in front of her own family. Though they had their little family dinners all the time, but if they ever went to a restaurant she hardly ever ate anything.
That was probably why she was a bag of bones.
It seemed every time she went to see her therapist, she was told to eat more. . . .
“Um,” Emmeline mused, trying to think of a good answer to Allison’s question. There was really only one answer, but Emmeline knew it would make her sound totally lame. Besides, could one’s butt really fall asleep? It was a muscle but. . . . “I—I don’t really get out. . . very often so um. . . I’m not sure what—there is to do around here.” Well, the truth was better than trying to make something up she supposed.
Allison seemed like a fun girl. She’d probably know something fun for them to do together on their first meeting.

BUBBLEGUM BITCHPractice makes perfect! Emmeline would make a great guest on her show but there was a time for everything.
Los Angeles is not as fun as people make it out to be or it could be that she's been living here too long. Disneyland is like second home and she's could navigate the place blindfolded. Emmeline would be the perfect specimen to take around and test out her Los Angeles know-how. She really was getting into this touring thing. If college didn't work out, she'd could work in as a tour guide. She wouldn't be overly chipper and annoying like the ones she always sees around.
Allison leaned forward and puffed out her cheeks. "That's leaves us with a lot of places to go." What's important here? What's iconic? What screams Los Angeles? "Oh dammit, it's closed." she said running her hands down her face. Allison could feel her stretching out under her fingers. "The Hollywood sign is completely closed because," she paused. Her hands dropped from her face and leaned in real close. "Someone got murdered or something like that. I don't really know but they've had the whole place taped for like a month now." Sometime through her rushed explanation Allison's eyes began to bulge out of her head.
Her voice dropped to a whisper as she leaned in even closer. "I heard that a ghost," she said bringing up her hands to wiggle her fingers mysteriously. "haunts the place." As if the whole thing never happened she dropped back into her seat with a plop and grinned at Emmeline. "That's why I can't wait to take you there sometime. The hike up there is a killer though." The pun was totally intended there.
In all her talk about the Hollywood sign, she forgot that she needed plans for today. "Wanna visit Japan, China or Korea?" Allison wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Murdered? Emmeline looked a little surprised and tried to think about that for a second. She wasn’t sure he’d heard anything like that before, but she didn’t really pay attention to current events. Emmeline wasn’t a news person unless something happened to go viral on Tumblr or Youtube. But those were usually only the funny stories or the really, really bad ones that garnered a lot of attention.
Anything local usually went by unnoticed for her.
“Really?” she asked, picking at her muffin a little more. She only took tiny little bites, afraid anything bigger would make her look ridiculous. It was the same with the coffee—only a few, refined sips every now and again. “I never heard that. Has the investigation really been going for a whole month? Isn’t that like, a huge tourist attraction? Why wouldn’t they open it?”
And a ghost? There were rumors of ghosts? Well that actually wasn’t too surprising. Everyone always wanted something to be haunted after there was a tragedy. That always made things so exciting. “I bet rumors of a, um, ghost get people up there anyway. People love ghosts for some reason.”
Emmeline? Not so much.
Allison asked a really confusing question, but Emmeline knew the answer almost immediately. She didn’t know much about China or Korea, but she watched a lot of Japanese animation in her free time—mostly romance or school drama, but there was the occasional action if it had even a smidge of steamy romance—so that was really the only answer. But she didn’t know what it had to do with going somewhere fun.
“I suppose I wouldn’t mind vising Japan. Though I don’t speak any of it so I’d want to learn at least a few sentences besides what I’ve picked up from watching, um, subs,” she murmured more to herself than to anyone else.

BUBBLEGUM BITCHShe cleared her throat and sat up straight in her seat. With her cool hot chocolate in hand, she sipped it slowly before placing it down. Allison smacked her lips, licked them and then let out a slow 'ahhh'. "Wise choice Emmeline-sama." she said with her best, a.k.a worst, Japanese accent ever.
Japan seemed so cool to her but the best thing she had was Little Tokyo. That's where she's taking her darling Emmeline. She can't really say what they'd do there but she was going to take her on the tour of her life. Allison needed a hat for this but then she'd confuse Emmie.
That gave her the greatest idea. They could go to Anime Jungle! She'd get the saddest, most romantic anime ever created and they can watch it together. Allison didn't have many friends she could marathon anime with. "I tried watching a dub once." A shudder runs down her spine as her eyes roll up. "Their voices." She let her shoulder slump as she flashed Emmie a half-smile. "Never try dubs. It's like rape for the ears."Allison took a plastic fork off the table and poked it at her teeth absent-mindedly. "We should learn Japanese together. Experience anime in its purest form." There were stars in her eyes as she spoke but she couldn't even get the basics of the Japanese culture down. She bit down on the fork and just played with it watching it bend and unbend. Satisfied with the distraction she returned her attention to her friend, "After the sundae we can go to Little Tokyo." Her jaw relaxed and her fork fell from her lips into her hand. "I mean if you're not busy." Allison twirled the plastic utensil between her fingers and pressed it into the moist chocolate cake. She easily stabbed it and placed a small piece in her mouth. This was some good cake. Did they have take-out? She swallowed the sweet pastry down and continued talking. "We could do it some other time." she said pushing back strands of loose hair. Her hoodie was slipping back on her head so she tugged it back over her head. "How are you getting home by the way? I might wanna meet that Dad of yours." she said grinning wildly.Saturday, May 12th at 12:37.

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- Emmeline giggled. Allison was just too fun. She was nothing like the other people she used to hang out before her accident. They were always too worried about how they looked in public. They were always putting on too much make-up, wearing flashy clothes that barely passed the school dress code, and they would have sneered at Allison. Allison was the type of person they would have looked down their noses at.
But Emmeline liked it. Back then, just to fit in, she would have looked down her nose, too, but now she knew—those were no true friends. They’d only liked her because they could get her to do stuff for them.
Allison, Allison seemed like the person that was a real friend.
“You can call me, uh, Emmie. My family and uh—they call me Emmie.” She was going to say “her friends” but she didn’t have any friends anymore. Except, well, Hayden and Gabbie, but Gabbie called her MnM so she didn’t think it really counted.
She nodded, quick to agree. “They um—aren’t so bad if you watch them, first. But if—if you ever watch the sub with, uh, original voice overs then the, dub is—totally ruined. I don’t, um, understand why English voice actors that are—uh, hired for these animes don’t. . . try as hard as the Japanese ones,” she pointed out, picking at a couple more crumbs of her muffin before taking another sip.
Before Allison had mentioned it, Emmeline had completely forgotten about the Sundae they’re ordered. Emmeline picked up a spoon and started to eat some of it, figuring that it would be a waste to just let it melt there. She had to eat it quick, so her regular small nibbles wasn’t going to be good enough.
But she was extremely self-conscious as she dove into it, trying to keep it from melting anymore.
“That would be fun,” Emmeline murmured thoughtfully, pulling the spoon out of her mouth and replacing it with a bite of muffin. The ice cream was a little too cold and she’d eaten it a little too fast, so she wanted to supplement it for the warm muffin. “I thought it would be neat to learn. Um, everything sounds, mm, more dramatic and, um, meaningful in Japanese.”
Emmeline shook her head. “No, I’m not busy. We could probably go. My, uh, ride told me to just, call when I wanted to come home. So—just, whenever I suppose. Just—not too late, they said,” she explained. Afterwards, she took a couple more embarrassing bites of ice cream. She grimaced slightly at the mention of her dad. Her next words were followed by a nervous chuckle. “He—uh, would probably like, to uh, meet you too.”

BUBBLEGUM BITCHAllison could appreciate anyone with an appetite but not when it's supposed to be shared food. But she didn't want to interrupt Emmie's speaking. This was the most she had spoken all day and she wanted to encourage it. Friendship is a two-way street, or so they say.
The word Japanese caught her attention though. Her gaze flicked upwards and she grinned at Emmie. She nodded enthusiastically before clapping her hands together. "Don't even get me started on things sounding better in Japanese." She raised her hands up by her head like she was balancing plates and popped them up and down. "Cute versus kawaii." Her left hand rose shakily as she spoke again. "Kawaii wins out." Now that she had been the polite person and carried the conversation
Allison was ready to dig in. With a quick cough to clear her throat she grabbed her spoon and rubbed her hands together. She adored Emmeline, that was the absolute truth but no more ice cream for her. A quick swipe was all it took to bring the bowl of ice cream to her side of the table. "Okay," she said between spoonfuls. Not the most graceful way to eat but who gave fudge.
A couple more spoonfuls and almost all the ice cream was gone. She was so proud of herself. Next thing she knew, she'd be in a food-eating contest. That would probably be the only she'd get any awards. Unless there was a trophy for biggest knockers in 11th grade.
The blur of her hand came to an abrupt stop as she felt the roof of her mouth grow cold. She dropped her spoon which fell into the bowl with a clatter. "Ugh, brain freeze." She clutched her head in pain and groaned softly. "We should never ever get ice cream again." Allison winced as she pointed a finger at Emmie. "It's your role as my BFF to remind me to never eat like that again. I'll forgive this once though." As soon as she felt the pain fade away she instantly perked up.
Her hand flew up into the air and she waved it wildly to get someone's attention. "Check please." she cried out as she saw someone walk by. A couple stares in her direction made her mouth open in a fake yawn. She patted her mouth with her free hand and slowly slinked down into her seat. "It's time for me to show you the world, my friend." The waiter was there in an instant and it was surprisingly someone that didn't make her eyes burn. Shame she couldn't appreciate it. She slapped down a twenty and got up with a loud screech as her chair scraped across the floor. Allison put down a five as a tip and walked to Emmie's side of the table.
With a tilt of her head, she held out her hand to Emmie. "I can't lose you now so keep close." There was a bus station nearby. She would have drove but her parents had dropped her off. The second shame of the day. Allison would have totally showed off her Fast and Furious worthy driving skills.

Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight And in the spring I shed my skin And it blows away with the changing wind The waters turn from blue to red As --- For once Emmeline was actually having a pretty good time. She still had the occasional pang of anxiety--like when Allison swiped the ice cream. Had she been eating too much? Did it look like she wasn't trying to share? She hadn't meant that--she'd merely been afraid the ice cream was going to melt. Allison was more than welcome to eat all she wanted too. Maybe she should have said something. Maybe. But she shook that thought as quick as she could. That couldn't be it. Could it?
It probably was.
Allison ate it pretty quickly and Emmeline made a sympathetic little sound before offering some advice for the brain freeze. "Push your thumb against the top of your mouth. I read brain freeze is caused because your mouth is cold--just make the roof of your mouth warm with your thumb." She read all kinds of useless stuff like this on the internet, but right now it seemed like it actually came in handy.
The check was handed to them and Emmeline stood up a little more gracefully, wincing at the horrible sound that came from Allison's chair. She wrapped her leftover muffin up in the plastic wrap and gently set it down in her purse. She would finish it off later tonight as a snack or something. They were terribly messy--especially the way she ate it since she liked to pick it apart and enjoy it slowly--and she didn't want Allison to think she was some sort of slob that made all kinds of messes when she ate. She just wouldn't be able to handle that. Emmeline had already made a risk eating that ice cream like that.
"But the world is so big," she commented, half joking and half being serious. The world was big and daunting for her. But all the same, she took Allison's hand when it was offered, so relieved that Allison had made that move. She would have felt terribly awkward holding on to her jacket to keep track of her. She briefly wondered if Allison knew something was wrong with her.
