This was karma. It was the only explanation for it. Karma, karma, karma come to haunt her after all that she had done and all the lies she'd told, with the icing on the cake being the one she'd written about the shark tornado a few days ago. Otherwise dubbed 'Sharknado' by the media and supposedly picked up by a major film studio, Ani's story to cover up the happenings at Venice Beach had surprisingly gone quite well. People had actually bought it, though she hadn't anticipated the anti-shark sentiment that had spread around her office the next morning.
The sharks were getting their revenge, and this was clearly how.
It had all started innocently enough. Ani had decided that she needed to get to know Naos better, since they were both in the IS and were clearly on the same wavelength. So, she'd sent him a text asking him whether they wanted to go chill together. On a boat. She'd learned to drive a motorboat a while ago, when her parents had taken her on a family holiday, and now she had a bit of time on her hands she'd offered to go teach him.
The adventure had begun smoothly enough. They'd gotten a boat from Santa Monica Pier, hoisted the sails, and they had taken it out to the middle of the sea. Talked, chatted, gotten to know each other. She was showing him the steering wheel and demonstrating the various controls, when they had felt a loud bump.
"Crap," Ani muttered, glancing towards the other youth. "Naos, did you feel that?" And then another bump, knocking their boat towards the side. "Shit," she said, before looking into the sea...
"Sharks."
There were at least four of them circling around the motorboat, and they looked angry. The boat swayed once again as one of them bumped into it. Ani gulped, swallowing the lump in her throat.
"Naos, if I die," Ani muttered as she backed away slightly from one of the fishy creatures as it headed closer to their boat, "If I die, I want you to know that you were a great friend." Were they... Getting violent? Dear heck, they were getting violent, she thought a one of the sharks nudged against the small dinghy. "I think they heard the story. Crap. Be prepared, I'm going to drive. And fast." ___________________________________

words | 378 | One could easily argue that no one liked learning something new quite as much as the young Naos did. In fact, he thrived on it, usually soaking in even the absurd details of something once he was hooked. How could he say no when he was offered some boating lessons?
He had grown up in Norway, a country with rather impressive sports and outdoorsmen. However, that didn’t mean he quite fit the mold. He had been a shut in and honestly he had never even properly learned how to swim. That was probably something he should have learned prior to agreeing to hop on a boat, but he had a life vest. He didn’t foresee any potential astounding difficulties.
They talked a great deal of the time. Naos was always rather vague when he talked about his home life, not wanting to let on the entirety of his unusual upbringing and family situation. Still, he offered up some things about his parents, as he enjoyed hearing more about Ani’s life. It was nice to learn more about someone he considered a friend.
And then the attack began. There were bumps and thunks. After Ani declared there were sharks, Naos followed to the side to glance himself. There were indeed a few sharks. Knowing of Ani’s story a few days before, this was an interesting scenario.
“Ah, we’re really lucky! Shark attacks like this almost never happen. They’re probably attracted to the electrical fields of the boat,” he decided aloud, sounding far more chipper than he really should have been. And he knew it. Though something improbable had happened to them, this wasn’t really the ideal situation for them to be in. Death was not impossible. He would have to have some faith in Ani’s driving, as he really didn’t want to go out being devoured by sharks. It was a fascinating way to go, sure, but he was too young to go out that easily. The teen allowed a pinch of worry to cross his face before he smiled again at Ani.
“For what it’s worth, I liked the story.” Naos prepared himself by securing his hold the nearest bar. “But this is a bad time to tell you that I can’t swim, isn’t it?” |
