Living Situation Kyu-Sik is from a Korean American family that has worked over the years to stay in the middle class bracket. Financially some times were better than others, often sliding between the lines of lower middle class. Though Kyu-Sik currently still lives with his parents in their home above their shop, he lives off of his own income as much as his mother will let him. Because he is not currently attending school, he has three different occupations that keep him busy. Tailor's Apprentice; This is Kyu-Sik's current full-time occupation. His years of helping his mother with various tasks around the house did pay off for him in more ways than one. Kyu-Sik developed a strong talent for sewing. However, as there are elements like full pattern drafting that he's still in the process of learning, he is only working as a tailor's apprentice at the moment. This means he is basically a sewing slave to the tailor he is working for. He spends long hours repairing clothing, finishing up seams and hems, making alterations, cutting, running out to purchase fabrics, fixing broken machines, and so on. He is very good at what he does and he handles all of his work with a tireless diligence. Instrument Repair Assistant; As his parents run an instrument repair shop, the boy has been helping there in some way or another for as long as he has been able. It has always been a part of his life. Although he doesn't know how to play every instrument, he has learned quite a bit in the field throughout the years. Give him a broken instrument and he'll be able to tell you what needs to be done. Half of the time it's something that he is capable of doing himself with the right equipment. However, thanks to his full-time job, he's only working at his parents' shop on a part time status currently. Knitter; Yes, the boy does somehow have free time between his full-time and part-time job. While "resting", Kyu-Sik will often also be knitting. It doesn't take a lot of time or thought, so it's easy to do while at dinner or while reading a book in his room. He is indeed one of those people who sells knitted accessories on Etsy. It's a meditative hobby and the extra money is nice. 02. Appearance Kyu-Sik is living proof that Koreans are indeed fairly tall. He stands at 6' 1", and is also a lanky shapeless beanpole. All of his other features aren't really surprising for a Korean male. His hair is straight, black, and kept a tidy short length. He takes after his father in that his eyes are on the more narrow side when compared to his sister's eyes, often seemingly disappearing when he's really laughing about something. However, it's hard to ever get that sort of reaction out of him. His common expressions are calm, even when stressed. His voice keeps this calm air, though it has a soft rasp to it. As far as fashion goes, the boy doesn't necessarily care about being super fancy. However, he definitely has a style that he likes best. He dresses a bit like a tasteful hipster, as tailored vests and narrow slacks suit him well. He'll even wear tweed and houndstooth slacks with suspenders in cooler months. Hats, usually flat caps or trilbies, and ties/bowties are sometimes included in this depending on the occasion. He owns more things in grays and blues than any other color. 03. Personality Positives: Collected, Perceptive, Dutiful, Talented, Devoted Negatives: Introverted, Insensitive, Bleak, Obsessive, Possessive Kyu-Sik has never been the easiest person to get to know. He's an introverted boy who has always preferred to keep to himself. On one hand, this is a positive feature. He's calm and collected. He typically processes his problems internally and doesn't let how stressed he can really get show. Regardless of how he's feeling, he keeps himself controlled. On the other hand, his introversion has reached the point that he's a closed off person. While he's never been hesitant to speak and speak honestly when spoken to or asked a question, Kyu-Sik never goes out of his way to socialize with others unless there's some reason or benefit. He makes it clear that he doesn't have the time to deal with his friends, and thus has lost any of the friends he had gained over the years. Yes, he does admit to being lonely every now and then. Unfortunately, he refuses to admit that his attitude could be an issue, as he really doesn't have the time to 'hang out' anyway. In actuality, socializing has never been an easy task for him regardless of how much time he's willing to give another person. Make no mistake, Kyu-Sik loves his family and he's not an awkward person in conversation. In fact, he can be considerably perceptive when dealing with others. He's good at reading the people he knows well, and the common expressions/tones of others. It's a skill that would make him a good businessman if not for the fact that on the other side of the coin it can cause him to be insensitive. Yes, he may know that a person is not happy with something. That doesn't mean he feels he needs to do something about it. His attitude is one of a person who feels others should just grow up, deal with their problems quietly as he does, and move on with their lives. It's a thought he's willing to very openly express. Work comes first in his mind. He was raised to believe that he needed to always prioritize and make responsibilities for himself if he wanted to get anywhere. A busy and successful life was a happy and rewarding life. Has he ever doubted this? Absolutely. Every single day. However, he has never been the type to rebel. He finds himself a bleak workaholic, unable to shift himself from his usual patterns. The boy will do everything that's expected of him and then some. Despite the fact he's still young, he no longer believes that his work ethic will lead to anything really special. At this point he only keeps working as much as he does as a constant distraction from his disillusionment. Busy hands are distracted hands. Sure, he may eventually move up in what he's made his career choice for the time being, but otherwise he's doomed to the life of an average person. Young and already jaded, his dreams are smothered by an early onset of harsh realism. However, his acceptance of an average workaholic life style isn't entirely fitting for him. Kyu-Sik is indeed an intelligent and talented boy. He's incredibly capable of doing amazing things that aren't at all average. When he starts learning a skill or gets into a hobby, he tirelessly does his best to perfect it. If he's not one of the best at what he does, then he convinces himself that he's just not trying hard enough and he'll continue to devote time to it until he's better. As a result, he's flawless with his sewing. His knitting? If something isn't good enough in his eyes, then he will unravel it and start again. No matter what it is, Kyu-Sik will always put his best foot forward and he proves himself skilled and able to improve himself. This can, of course, just lead to more problems. Nearly everyday this attitude causes him to lose sleep and causes him quite a bit of grief. He allows himself to become a slave to his own talents. It becomes an obsession. He won't eat until those jackets are finished being patched. He won't sleep until he's made that last stitch. He's always pushing himself and running himself ragged. At this point it may be to distract himself from his own bleak view that he's dedicated so much for so little, but he can't stop and he refuses to be questioned. None of it matters, but it has to be perfect. He's already aware of the contradiction in this, as he is a reasonable boy, but there's no mental 'off switch' for him. Just as he is devoted to his responsibilities in life, so is he devoted to the people who are actually important to him. When needed by his family, he will always make time and do his best. In the most extreme example of this, and in what's perhaps a bizarre inversion of his usual traits, Kyu-Sik has always been devoted to the whims of his sister especially. He will drop everything he's doing at the moment if she calls on him for something. It's fortunate that she's always been very aware of and reasonable about his desire to please her, because he certainly has never been reasonable about it himself. While otherwise a fairly logical person who takes his responsibilities very seriously, his attitude toward the situation has even led to him being fairly possessive toward her. He's certainly frightened off enough of her former boyfriends for that much to be true. She is the closest thing to a real friend that Kyu-Sik has, after all. He wants her to be happy, he just also wants to be the one to make her that way. The same could happen with anyone he loved that much, but he doesn't allow himself the social opportunities to really become attached to others in the same way. 04. History Seung-Sik and Ji-Ho were a happy couple of Korean immigrants who met and fell in love in the ever-busy area known as Koreantown. As they were a young pair also in love with music, they wanted only to open up a successful business that would sell and repair instruments. It would be through this that they would make friends with the stars and become financially successful in their new country. They swore to each other they would never have kids. Part of their story did pan out the way they hoped it would. The couple was married in the winter of 1992. After the unfortunate and terrifying LA riots of that same year, the real-estate and competition for business was driven far below what it once had been. So, the couple managed to afford one of the buildings that had been given up by a business moving elsewhere. That building would become their home and the home of their first business venture. It took a lot of work and a lot of what little savings they both had, but their dream was slowly getting on its feet even if it wasn't in the most desirable location of LA. They were amongst those who also went into protesting for equality rights between all minorities, so their relationship with others in the neighborhood was good. Things only took a turn in mid-1993 when Ji-Ho discovered that she was pregnant. They accepted the pregnancy with uneasiness and in 1994 Ji-Ho gave birth to twins who were named Kyu-Sik and Mi-Ho. It was a confusing time, but thankfully when it came down to it they were both happy parents who stepped up to the plate to raise the two to the best of their ability. For extra stability in their income, second jobs were had outside of running their own business. They worked hard to continue making their own dream a reality and to give their children more opportunities. Kyu-Sik and Mi-Ho were raised to be ambitious children who were just as hard-working as their parents. They had a pretty good childhood, using their imagination mostly to play games with each other before they were old enough to go to school. They learned to take care of themselves and help out around the house probably a bit younger than most, but they never resented this. Both children looked up to their parents and there was a sincere desire to make them proud. Also, the twins were inseparable, always helping each other with everything whether it was homework, dishes, sewing rips in clothes when they couldn't afford new things, or walking to the creepy old lady down the street for piano lessons. Even if their parents were in and out of the picture between the business and their second jobs, neither had to deal with the feeling of being alone. That was something young Kyu-Sik never even thought to take for granted. Unfortunately, it was something that would finally come up when the twins reached middle school age. Entering middle school came with a whole new list of potential extracurricular activities. Naturally, Kyu-Sik was interested in music thanks to his parents and the business they owned. He joined the school's band with flute as his instrument of choice. Mi-Ho, however, decided to take up dance. It really wasn't that big of a deal. They would still see each other more than enough. However, Kyu-Sik was unsettled at this development. It was his first venture without his sister by his side, and like the introvert he was he internalized his problem with this. He convinced himself that he was being silly, and became aware that perhaps he was overly attached. So, rather than fight this first instance, he only allowed this chasm to grow. This was fine. Well, actually it wasn't, but for the next few years of his life he would passively let it happen despite occasional flings of driving off any boy who attempted to court her. Instead of worrying about it he decided to instead bury himself in his studies and his music. Over the years, he managed to snag the title of first chair flautist and keep a great gpa, all while still doing the house chores required of him and working at least thirty hours each week at his parents' store. It wasn't that bad, and towards the end of his rather stunning high school career he had managed to draw up a few life directions for himself. While there were fallbacks like sewing planned, as it was something he learned to enjoy, Kyu-Sik was encouraged to aim as high as possible first. Of course, he applied to Juilliard, wanting to make his parents proud and do something with his talents in music. And as he planned his next move in life, so did his sister. Knowing that going off to different schools would finally be the thing to drive them actually apart, Kyu-Sik finally brought up a conversation with her about the situation and an agreement was made. Mi-Ho was interested in going to a dance school. If he actually got into Juilliard, then she would try to find a dance school in New York. Unfortunately, though Kyu-Sik did make it to the audition phase, he was told he was articulate, but dispassionate in his playing. He did not get in and Mi-Ho ended up in a school in San Francisco. Kyu-Sik accepted his failure quietly, but it was obvious to those who really knew him that he did not take it well. He packed his flute away and hasn't touched it since. When questioned as to why he didn't just apply to another school he simply said that if he couldn't be the best in it, then there was no reason to pursue it further. Instead, what he did manage to find in a rather quick timeframe was an apprenticeship with one of LA's highly respected tailors. Though fine sewing was a shrinking field to some, that limited interest was exactly what made it a great opportunity for him. He already had a wide knowledge of sewing basics from repairing clothes and altering hand-me-downs when he was younger. That combined with his obsessive attitude made him a suitable apprentice, as he was quick to slave over fine-tuning his skills. It served as a much-needed distraction as his sister continued on to school in another city without him. It hasn't been that long since he received his apprenticeship, but the boy has been doing as well as he could be. He's not expecting anything better to happen anytime soon. If ever. He has allowed himself to become quite the dreary workaholic because of that pessimism. However, somewhere deep inside, he does wish something better would come along. 05. Extras » He's fluent in only English, though he knows enough Korean to talk to his grandmother and promise her that he will brush his teeth after every meal. He is also pretty good with Spanish due to the diversity of the area he lives in. » He will make a person eat their kimchi if it is present with a meal, and he always makes sure to open a window when a fan is on. More out of habit than a belief in "fan death". » No. No, he doesn't care for K-pop. Modern folk or jazz is more of his speed. Sorry, G-Dragon. |
