words | 378 | Naos was usually very good about not missing school. Prior to his move to Los Angeles, he had never been to a public school, so the opportunity to attend one was taken and enjoyed. However, it did get frustrating. He was learning so much about his peers while there, but he was learning very little academically. When he found out that they'd just be reviewing the Periodic Table in chemistry class, the boy decided that perhaps he should take the day off of class. If he was clever enough to have the entire table memorized as of a few years ago, then certainly he'd be clever enough to fake an illness. Instead of going to school, he was going to play hooky just like a normal boy. And he succeeded in convincing his guardian that he needed to stay home and rest for a day.
And what did this normal boy decide to sneak off to after his success? He decided to study. As soon as everyone else left the house for the day, he started his own by going to nearest university where he snuck in on an early morning lecture. It was just a cultural studies class, but that was a great lead in for his trip downtown hit up a fews museums he had yet to visit. First on his list was the Japanese American National Museum located in Little Tokyo.
At least, that was supposed to be the first on the list. However, being the observant boy he was meant that he did occasionally get a little sidetracked from his initial intentions. Little Tokyo itself seemed to be a wealth of culture that he hadn't really thought to thoroughly explore yet. Naos was a bit curious about Asian cultures after meeting the odd Japanese-but-not man awhile back, so he found himself even staring into all of the store windows that he passed by on his way down the street.
That's when he saw it. A small Japanese cafe. He hadn't eaten breakfast as part of his faking sick act, and brunch sounded perfect. He stopped in his steps and peeked into a small cafe window wondering if he should get the takoyaki or try a red bean bun. The options seemed equally delicious looking. |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends This particular day Elaine just... didn't feel like school. Ditching school was a common practice for her. Actually, no, it wasn't, but she had done it enough back in Greece that she knew the routine that her dad always followed. She faked sick many times, and the good old stomach ache was always good. Especially when she hinted at particularly girly problems. Well, the subject wasn't pressed and further and she had successfully faked sick (or rather, too in pain for school). And thus she got another day to shop. She wasn't going to just stay in this big empty house, unlike what her father advised her to do. Too foreboding. But she did take the time to catch up on sleep.
And when she woke up, Elaine was refreshed and ready to take on whatever the day had in store for her. Well technically she was planning out this day ahead of time. It was more or less her time to go catch up on shopping - not like she had gone shopping the week before or anything. But there was new merchandise! Maybe there were sales! There were always more sales on the weekdays than the weekends, because people don't really shop in the weekdays! Also holidays, but they weren't particularly any holidays that were coming up very close.
She grabbed some toast and decided to go to Little Tokyo. There was always new Sound Fuse things that she always wanted to buy, whether or not she really needed them. Like those key chains, or those phone charms, or those figurines! Yes, this is what she called a day off, and this day off would be glorious. No better way to do it, in her opinion. But the toast could only give her so much to sate her hungry - she was a growing woman and she demanded food!
There was still plenty of time, Elaine figured, to buy all the things she could. So she wandered around looking for a place to eat in Little Tokyo (the food was usually a bit overpriced, but this was a pretty popular tourist district so who could blame them), there was always something good to eat here. Usually Japanese food, but this was a Japanese area (the whole reason she came here was to shop for stuff from a Japanese band).
But she was not expecting to see a familiar face. Elaine reeled back and wondered if it would be best if she turned around and pretended she saw nothing and hope that this person didn't catch her out. But then she came to recognize the face - someone in her class. And looking at the time, he should be in class too. So she didn't have to do that, in fact, they both did well if no one said a thing about this encounter. Now, what was his name? It was one of the weird Dia names. Nate? Norman? Nick? Elaine coughed twice to get his attention. Oh dear, seems like she had forgotten. Well, it'll come to her later. This one was the really smart Dia, that was weird. "I didn't expect you to be out here, of all places. Shouldn't you be in a classroom?" Okay, well she should be in one too, but it was more unexpected of him than of her.

words | 277 | It took him a minute, but he decided on both. Takoyaki and a red bean bun wouldn't be a bad combination, right? One for brunch, one for brunch dessert. He was still staring into the cafe window when he heard the sound of a familiar voice. Being the kind of person who wasn't so quick to forget a person's name, face, or voice, he knew exactly who it was. However, knowing who it was didn't make it any less surprising for him.
He turned his head just to be sure it was her, and indeed it was. Elaine Darzi-Accurso, daughter of one of the Impedio Society consuls. Who she was never really made the boy uncomfortable, because it wasn't like she was the consul herself. If anything, he had been intrigued to meet her when he finally got the opportunity and little had gone on between them since then. It was just strange to catch her outside of school.
"I'm really sick today," he lied with a shrug, not even trying to look or sound that way. It was obvious to anyone that he wasn't sick at all. But neither was she. This was an interesting predicament. Naos felt it was safe to say that neither of them should have been in Little Tokyo in the middle of a school day. While he had thought about the possibilities being caught in the back of his mind, he hadn't pictured this scenario. He was comfortable in knowing that he was still safe from getting in trouble for skipping.
"To be fair, I'm not the only one who should be in a classroom right now. Are you sick, too?" |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends The both of them knew exactly what they were doing wrong at this very moment, although he didn't seemed all that fazed to have been caught. Then again, Elaine was just a classmate that was, obviously, doing the same as him and ditching. So she really didn't pose much of a threat to him anyways, if he even cared. He really needn't have lied, it was blatantly obvious he wasn't sick. "Me? Stomach pains. Horribly painful, can't even walk two steps without hunching over." She walked two steps and then hunched over in a melodramatic act of pain, as though it were the reality of the situation.
What was his name again? None of the ones Elaine ran through her head seemed to fit just right. Most of them just seemed blatantly wrong, because of how common and usual they were. The only thing she could remember was that it started with the letter 'N' and it was a weird and unusual name. One would think she'd remember the actual name besides it being an odd one. But she was determined that it would come to her in a moment of revelation.
Elaine had come to this particular place to get some food, and since this guy was here, why not grab some food with him? They were both fellow ditchers of school (she wondered if perhaps it would be suspicious that the two of them were gone, but then decided that the teachers were too stupid and didn't care), so why the heck not? He had been staring into the window rather intently to this little care. "Hey, wanna eat together?" It was about as much of an invitation as she could muster up.
She was hungry, after all, and the two of them were in front of a cafe. What else was there but to go and eat there?

words | 304 | Naos couldn't hold in his laugh at her dramatic act, finding it much more impressive than his total lack of attempt. Maybe this being caught situation wasn't bad or even awkward after all. He gave her a decisive nod before placing his hands in the pockets of his light hoodie. "Well, it certainly is a good thing we're not at school then." He doubted that it would be too suspicious that both of them were missing on the same day, too. Plenty of people were absent everyday and not even he hardly thought about who might be skipping school with who unless it was a special occasion.
He smiled at her sudden invitation, his eyes returning to the little cafe they were standing in front of. He had been planning on spending the day alone, but why do that when he didn't have to? Naos was always the sort of person who preferred company when he could help it. "Sure! I was going to eat here, if that's okay." He figured it was since she seemed to notice he was looking into it.
"I've had sushi before, because Norway likes raw fish as much as the next country," he admitted as he finally reached for the door. It was more like gravlaks and lutefisk more often than it was real sushi, but he wasn't going to over-explain himself just yet. "However, I've never had anything like takoyaki or red bean. People always tell me it's delicious back at school, but I just haven't found the chance to check out this area yet." He was honestly still spending time systemically going through Hollywood, but today was a day for museums. And food. It was a good opportunity to try more Japanese foods. He held open the cafe door for her.

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends 'N' (Elaine thought of one more name and that was Nacho, and she was pretty sure his name was not Nacho - his hair kind of reminded her of nacho cheese though), she found it, was kind of odd. Not really in a bad way, just in a refreshing sort of not caring that he was caught out of school, that he was just going on with his great crusade of skipping school. Remind her why she wasn't friends with Nacho again? She didn't know, probably just difference of friends. Also the fact that she avoided people of the Society whenever she could at school, though that was a hard feat that of itself seeing as practically half the school was Impedio Society. It wasn't, not at all, but there were enough for Elaine to consider it as such.
And Nacho was off talking about sushi. And takoyaki. And food that she really wanted to eat right now. "I've tried red bean before, but I've been here plenty of times. Not this particular cafe, but Little Tokyo." She was by no means an expert in food and dining in Japan, or even in Little Tokyo, but she had tried a lot of things, both here whenever she wanted to stop shopping for lunch and back in Greece. She quite liked the food. "They're right, you know? About it being really good. I can vouch for red bean, but not the takoyaki, I'm just about clueless on you for that. But it's really sweet, you know? The red bean."
Elaine really did like sweet things, but she wasn't sure about Nacho (can't her brain just hurry up and remember his name?). She didn't know a lot of things about Nacho - like his name - but she knew pretty much anyone in the Impedio Society knew her because of her unfortunate relation to a certain consul. He was quite the gentleman, actually, holding that door for her. She mock curtsied at him, before entering the cafe.
Which reminded her, despite it all, she was hungry. Her breakfast had consisted of just toast, and as a growing girl, she needed more than just that in her system. The cafe offered plenty of things to eat, from the things Nacho mentioned to more obscure things she didn't know the names of - but they were there, and they kind of looked delicious. But she was a little curious - she'd heard of takoyaki and after all this time she hadn't even tried it. "You don't mind if I eat the same as you, right?" She sat down at a random table, beckoning her companion to join her.

words | 432 | Naos was aware enough of his nature to never question why some people didn't want to be around him all that often. In the span of four months at a public high school, he had already exhausted a number of potential friends. He was a bit of an eccentric, and he knew he wasn't everyone's cup of tea. That was all there was to it. If anyone avoided him, he defaulted to thinking that was the reason before he debated the other potential explanations. However, he took a mile when given an inch as always. The boy may have been raised as a shut in, but he wasn't good at even pretending to be shy or humble. It wasn't hard for him to act naturally around even someone he didn't spend that much time with.
"Is it?" His smile lit up and he seemed all the more intrigued at the idea of the red bean being sweet. He was a late-blooming junk food junkie, though that just got him thinking about the possible nutritional value of the treat. It probably wasn't all that great, but it was probably better than that time he ate a bag of marshmallows.
He took his seat when beckoned, but shook his head at her question. "It's a terrible idea to order two of the same thing," he decided cheerfully. He didn't mean to be insulting so much as he was thinking of the logical approach to the situation in his head. It was fine for them to both try takoyaki. After all, why not? He wasn't there to tell her what to eat, just as he wasn't there to tell her to go to school. It worked both ways. However, he was going to make the most out of this opportunity. "Let's get two different things and share, then. They also have things like…" Naos picked up the menu at the table and scanned through it. He did his best to decipher what everything was, but the vague descriptions given made it difficult to tell. "Yakitori? Soba? Omu-rice? Wow, I really haven't tried anything."
This seemed like a good cafe with plenty of options, but that left him shooting in the dark. Which he didn't really mind unless his fellow ditcher had any preferences. "Does any of that sound good, or do you come to Little Tokyo for something other than the food?" Maybe she recognized some of it, but it was fine if she didn't. There was always the chance she just came to the area for the scenery or some other part of the culture. |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends He... had a point, Elaine will admit that. She never did like admitting things like someone being smarter than her (even if it were so, so true), just like she couldn't bring herself to just ask Nacho for his actual name. No, no need, as she was able to identify him, that was enough. And Nacho was sort of a nickname, so it could always be passed off as that. No harm done. "You're right! I'll get something else then. That is a really good idea." Elaine was a little surprised at how nonchalant she was taking that. If anything, she was hitting herself for not thinking of that.
No matter. The more pressing concern is to what exactly she would eat. Honestly, she was just as in the dark as Nacho was. Elaine didn't really want to say that though, so she scanned the menu and tried to figure out what exactly these things were. The only thing she was for sure about was that they all sounded delicious and if it weren't for a thing called her weight and a thing called her health, she'd have ordered it all.
Actually, Elaine would have ordered it all, weight and health be damned, if she weren't trying to keep up appearances. Especially with a classmate in her midst (although really, Nacho didn't seem to be someone who judged people). "It does sound good, but I'll just get some food and a dessert, if you don't mind. I mean, don't you want to try mochi ice cream? It's usually the first thing anyone thinks of when eating Japanese food." Well, that and sushi. "I didn't come here for food, but I am hungry, so I'd have eaten anyways."
She was in the mood for something sweet. Elaine had swore to herself she'd limit her junk food intake but, well, it was really hard when she was in this cafe with many delicious looking things. "Does that sound good? Yakitori and mochi?"

words | 294 | "Sounds good, I'll eat just about anything," he admitted with a shrug. Even if he only had the vague food description to go off of, it all looked and smelled delicious from where he was sitting. He had heard of mochi ice cream as well and hadn't thought of that. He certainly wasn't opposed to eating it. After all, the game plan was to try new things. Well, kind of. The original game plan was to go to the museum, but this was a good pitstop.
And perhaps another plan in the making was to take the opportunity to get to know the other girl more than he did. He made it his mission to at least have some knowledge of as many people as he could. Good connections meant that he had a lot of people he could contact if he ever needed help with anything. Though Naos wasn't entirely sure what her own capabilities were, there was no harm in finding that out while he was there. She was, after all, the daughter of one of the other consuls. It wasn't that big of a deal to him, but there was no sense in wasting the chance.
"Why did you come here if not for the food? Other than it's less boring than school. Fashion? Media? Herbal medicine for your stomach?" He questioned just as he flagged down the small cafe's single waiter to come and take their order. It was a small place, but he was assuming that was why she was there, and that they didn't need to go up to the counter. She returned his wave with a signal that she would be right there, and soon enough she was ready to take their orders. Which didn't take long. |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends "Great! I've been meaning to try things for a while now, just never got the opportunity." Elaine had always been too busy shopping, or walking around, or sightseeing. But she's only been here a couple of times, having moved to LA recently, all the other times were back in Greece. And well, for some reason she thought this place would be a little bit more authentic. Maybe it's because of the fact there were a lot more Japanese people here.
Elaine had to laugh - she had to. Nacho was really funny. "Definitely the herbal medicine. There's no other reason I'd be here otherwise, right?" She smiled, maybe this would be a better day than she expected. Not that she had expected a bad time, it was just that she liked company, and Nacho was definitely providing pretty good company here. Oh, yeah, the food, that's right. It had to be ordered.
She ordered and struck up some small talk before the waitress disappeared with their order. "Though really? I don't know, shopping probably. Anything to get out of the house, and not go to school." She was sort of musing aloud now. Her original intention was shopping, yes, but she couldn't help but feel like that goal's been shifted a bit now. For some reason, she could definitely see herself not shopping and being perfectly content with whatever happened. Wherever Nacho wanted to drag her along. "This is sort of like a date, I guess."
Not really, though. "Did you come here for the food or...?"

words | 382 | Naos found himself returning her laughter. He hadn't really bothered Elaine all that much, but she didn't seem quite as difficult to get along with as he had formerly assumed she might be. So far she was fairly normal for a girl their age, skipping school with imaginary stomach pains and all. And he was liking that, even when she caught him off guard with mention of their encounter as sort of like a date.
The intricacies of dating were far beyond him, despite what he had observed in the social circles of fellow teenagers in high school. He was still in the process of figuring out what the friendship thing was about. At the base of both, there was still that idea of companionship that others seemed to really need in their everyday lives. Humans were naturally social creatures, so it made sense. For him though? He recognized himself as an oddity to a community. He craved interaction that he only needed to fill a curiosity that could never really be filled. Was his desire ever anything more than that? No, not really. People were fascinating and he loved to watch the world tick by. Even if the idea of companionship itself seemed unnecessary to him, he appreciated the moments of insight it offered.
Whether or not Elaine knew what she was doing, she just turned their interaction from an opportunity for observation into an experiment. He could play along with a semi-date for awhile. He played off her comment rather casually, offering her no more than a smile and a nod. "Sort of, perhaps," he said, taking a moment to look around the cafe's interior.
"I actually came here for the museum that they have near by. It's the Japanese American National Museum. I usually don't mind going to school, but the actual education system here isn't what I had hoped for. It gets really boring sometimes. A field trip sounded better." Naos was honest, seeing no point in lying to her about it. It wasn't as simple as just wanting to get out of the house without going to school, but it may as well have been. "Not quite as exciting as a shopping trip, but I suppose that depends on what you were probably wanting to shop for." |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends To be perfectly honest, now that she was thinking of it, Nacho was not dating material. Much as she did like to play around a bit, there was just no way she could be associated in that kind of way with someone in the Society (at least, not at this very moment, especially when she strove to avoid them at all costs when she went to school - impossible though seeing as she's made some friends at school withing the Society already). When Elaine thought dating material, she thought hot men with abs and attractive hair and kissable lips and somehow cuddly with all that attractiveness. And unfortunately, Nacho did not fit these expectations at the very least.
He could be someone she could ask to do her homework for her - he had that type of atmosphere about him. Elaine maintained her grades the best she could, but sometimes it was just time consuming and really difficult. Plus, her interests could be put elsewhere. Oh, this could be her new project - work on getting him to do homework for her whenever she just didn't feel like it. Goodness be she already resorted to looking up all the answers on the internet.
All she could really think about his reason for coming to Little Tokyo was boring, but that was rude. He really was a bit of a nerd, wasn't he? Thinking about museums when there was so much else to do here? "Sounds boring." She'd much rather have heard that he did come out here to eat the food and nothing else. "But I can't judge, can I?" And at just that precise moment in a bit of what Elaine could call pretty good timing, their orders arrived.
"Shall we?"

words | 367 | Her response was met with cheer rather than any disappointment, as he couldn’t really say he was surprised. He appreciated her honesty. “I figured as much anyway,” he shrugged to himself as he watched the well-timed food arrive at their table. Somehow having it in front of him didn’t really help him understand what everything was just yet. From the food descriptions that were offered in the menu and the unlabeled pictures he could take guesses on what things were. The round things were takoyaki. The non-round things were not takoyaki. It was simple enough and everything looked amazing.
“Yes, let’s eat!” He picked up a pair of chopsticks on the table and decided to try his luck with them. He may not have had much in the ways of Japanese cuisine in the past, but he was able to use chopsticks at least. He had taught himself when he was younger using a pair of pencils during lunch until his mother caught him and then proceeded to scold him for at least a week. At least it was saving him some embarrassment now? Just as he prepared to shove some takoyaki into his mouth, he looked up at Elaine to see her own reactions to the food.
The museum was likely out of the question after their meal if she was choosing to join him for the rest of their school skipping venture. (And really if she wasn’t choosing to join him, he was already choosing to join her without asking.) Shopping might have been fine for him, but only so long as they’d be covering more of the area. Naos didn’t think of himself as boring, but he knew where his difficulties were in fitting in with his peers. He was a very unmasculine nerd who found enjoyment in watching bacteria grow before setting it on fire, not the popular cool guy who was totally awesome at some random sport. Though he got along with most everyone well enough, the disconnect was hard to bridge sometimes. That’s what made him more optimistic about the current situation.
“So, Miss Darzi-Accurso, what’s not boring then? Other than shopping. And probably other than more food.” |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends Nacho... It really bothered Elaine, for some reason, that she couldn't remember his name for the life of her. She'd expected it to come back to her by now - and no, it didn't. Maybe it was because she kept referring to him as Nacho in her head. But she was a bit too prideful to ask him for his name, after making such nice conversation with him. She knew it started with an 'N', that had to count for something, no? But she resolved to look it up later, and she focused on the now present food in front of them.
She had eaten food like this before, so she could handle chopsticks just fine, it was just that she just hadn't tried half the things in front of her - correction, all of it. And as expected of Japanese cuisine, it was delicious. "Isn't this great?" Sometimes Elaine had to remind herself that she was keeping company right now and it wouldn't do to make such faces in public. Even if she really did like the food. "You like it too, right?" She wasn't the only one, right? "Try the yakitori too~"
Elaine did not want to be the only one who was eating. It was one of those things - that stereotypical girl not wanting to eat too much in front of someone. For appearance sake, really. But, ah, she had to remind herself that this was a nerd. Or else, he appeared to be a nerd at school, so she really shouldn't think of appearances all that much in front of him. Technically this meeting was more or less exciting only because they happened to meet together, and they happened to be skipping school on the same day. She'd like to say she was pretty popular and didn't associate with people like him, not on a regular basis. She could do much better, or so she told herself. Nacho wasn't bad company, though. Not as boring as she thought, but still plenty boring.
"Besides shopping?" She couldn't think of what else could possibly be more enjoyable than the act of shopping. "Hmm, I don't know." Oh, he asked what wasn't boring. "Playing games, I guess, I'm sure there are some arcades around... What about you - have any other boring interests like going to a museum?"

words | 527 | As Naos still had no idea that Elaine didn’t actually remember his name, he felt no need to bring it up. In most cases, he tended to lie about it anyway. The only reasons that he would have honestly told her his name were that she went to the same school and she was also a member of the Impedio Society. It was always nice to meet IS members his own age. He liked to know where he stood in the skill rankings and it was just refreshing to not feel like the youngest in something. Not that he particularly minded any of the contrary, it was just nice. And if anything, it would have been a joy to him to know she had remembered him, but forgotten his name.
For now, he was just taking the joy of eating something delicious. The takoyaki was much hotter on the inside than he had expected, causing him to ungracefully cover his mouth and mumble something rather pathetic in Norwegian before taking a drink of water. Naos had little care for appearances outside of coming off as at least a somewhat normal teenager, so he wasn’t even trying. “It’s really good!” He finally declared after finally chewing and swallowing. He’d have to be more careful not to just plop the whole thing into his mouth right away again, but it was tasty and the octopus was not overcooked. The boy enjoyed junk food, but he also couldn’t say no to good seafood.
“You know, I haven’t really played many games or been to an arcade,” he replied, his eyes going to the yakitori as he picked some up with his chopsticks. Going to an arcade one day was on his lists of things to do, but he hadn’t even finished going through all of the Hollywood stars yet. These things took time. “I did play pinball once! I think I’m good at that, but I can’t say much for anything else. I could tell you about dissecting firebirds, but I don’t think you want to hear about that. Let’s see…”
Naos took his bite of yakitori and then looked up in the ceiling in thought as he chewed. For once, he decided that just being honest with someone was probably the best direction to go in. It wasn’t as if he had as much to hide to her as he did someone who knew nothing about the IS. “I spend a lot of time studying so that maybe I can blend in with the area, to be honest. It’s really different than what I’m used to, so to learn more about American culture I’ve just been watching a lot of movies lately. I keep being told I need better hobbies.” Raw eggs and exercise he’d never get around to, stuff like that. “Either way, I find just about everything interesting to an extent. Los Angeles has a lot to do!”
He smiled as he finally looked back to Elaine. He was probably talking too much again, but better a thorough answer than a vague one, right? “Is it anything like where you’re from?” |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends Okay, well, Elaine couldn't say Nacho was boring. It was, more or less, more like a stigma. Nerds were supposed to be boring and dull. Don't even get her started on his fashion sense. But at least, well, normally she wouldn't be caught dead hanging out with someone like him, what about her reputation? Then again, no one of really real importance was here right now, so technically it would be okay, right? Plus... maybe he was important for the Impedio Society and she could use him?
Or maybe that was planning too far ahead. She sincerely hoped that he wouldn't think they were friends, well... not in public, anyways. After all, Elaine couldn't socialize with his type of people. And she wasn't planning on making it a habit to do so. But as long as this was a secret between them, there should be no trouble at all. She was still wondering how to get him to be useful to her, though. Without tipping him off that she was trying to use him.
"You're... really weird." But Elaine tried to sound cheerful about it as he was. Dissecting fire birds? How... ah, interesting. Probably something with the weirdo Society thing again. Then again, all the people she'd met in the Society were weird in their own way, so she supposed this was to be expected now.
Elaine couldn't help but think, for someone who was supposed to be so smart, Nacho just... wasn't. So he may have had the brains that she lacked (not to say she lacked brains, he just had... more), but dear god for someone who was 'studying the culture to try to blend in', he was doing a not so good job at it. He needed better hobbies for sure. "Yeah, Los Angeles is really famous for a lot of things."
Well, even she, as a small child, had always wanted to come here. The glitz, the glamour, the fabulousness! Fashion! Celebrities! Something of that sort. She really was a diva deep down inside, she didn't deny it. Not to mention - Hollywood! Everybody who was anybody came to Hollywood. Then again, Larissa was a pretty nice place too. "Los Angeles is really great, actually! I've always wanted to come here. Home is really nice, I mean both of the cities are really big but... everybody comes to Los Angeles, you know?" She took a piece of takoyaki.

words | 391 | Elaine was trying, and oh how she was trying. Her attempts to remain cheerful in calling him weird were met with a vigorous nod. Naos wasn’t shaking in his own unusual joviality and he wasn’t even trying. To his credit, the boy was incredibly self aware. He knew that he was weird, and he preferred to remain that way. However, he had enough tact to not go more into dissection details in a conversation with Elaine. At least not in their current time and place.
Instead of going on any random tangents from that point, he listened to her comments thoughtfully and focused on what he had learned about Los Angeles so far. “California is famous for their fruit and trees, but that’s not quite what Los Angeles is all about. The media industry is what’s most famous, I think! I’ve mostly spent a lot of time at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I was going through each actor and actress to watch a few of their movies. I left off on Jack Lemmon, who I think is a lot better than Grace Kelly. But that’s not really fair to say, because their genres are different. Really—“
He paused. Ah, right, focus. That didn’t mean ramble without pause to her about the movie industry. Naos dug into the yakitori with his chopsticks again while he regrouped his thoughts. “Well, really, those people aren’t that important any more since they were from a few decades ago,” he finally said after he had chewed and swallowed his noodles. “They were from that era where you could get big in Los Angeles, but the modern idea of the city is disillusionment, disappointment, and finding yourself washing cars while your writing career goes nowhere. It’s very…” There was a phrase on the tip of his tongue, but he couldn’t quite find the right way to translate it. “Goats without bananas? Cats without pajamas?” Nope, those weren’t the right phrases at all. He shrugged.
“Still, I do really like it here, too. I like it better than Oslo. Everybody does come here, even for the worst.” Within the Impedio Society, people most definitely came for the worst. Himself included.
“Any big goals while you’re here in the city? Like things you want to do or places you want to see?” |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends No. No, Nacho being weird wasn't the only thing about him that Elaine found... peculiar. No, it was the way he could just go on and on and on about a subject with little concern over the actual topic... To be fair, Elaine was actually interested in his topic of choice - that is, the Hollywood fame part. It was interesting. Elaine didn't really know about that stuff, but she was eager to learn and Nacho was providing her with temporary amusement on the subject. And she guessed, technically an education on the movie industry.
Still, she really didn't need to know anything about that. Honestly speaking she'd probably forget all about it tomorrow, or even twenty minutes from now.
Surprisingly, though, Elaine found that she didn't mind Nacho's rambling, not at all. She kind of found it... what was the right word? Intriguing? Engaging? Endearing? No, definitely not that, she could envision herself getting fairly annoyed with him if she spent too much time around him. Which she wouldn't be doing, not to her current knowledge. So she just smiled along and nodded. There wasn't much Elaine could really contribute to the conversation, because the most she knew of were famous and attractive actors and a few actresses.
"LA is pretty great, isn't it? I haven't been here too long. Much as I miss Larissa, I really do prefer Los Angeles." That was it. That was her conversation contribution. Even now she thought it fairly dull and insubstantial compared to Nacho's spitfire of facts.
And then. One of her favorite questions. Well, an obvious question for anyone who knew anything about her (well except for some Impedio Society people, though she supposed the daughter of the head consul had a reputation for being all-around better-than-you and spoiled rich), because the answer was something she could talk on and on and on about. Similar to what Nacho did not too long ago, one could say.
Only about something interesting. "Shopping." Elaine loved shopping almost more than anything else in the world. "I want to shop in the rich districts of Los Angeles, see the Hollywood sign, buy all the fashionable clothes, go to Disneyland, so many things I can't even list them all!"

words | 316 | Her hobbies were all pretty predictable based on what she had told him so far. Shopping, of course. To be fair, the fashions in Los Angeles were fascinating. However, the matter of clothes was one of their starkest contrasts. It was clear to anyone that more often than not, Naos had absolutely no fashion sense or taste level. He happily wore brightly colored and clashing clothes than even a blind person could get away with. The only saving grace in his wardrobe was perhaps that it fit him, even if his silhouettes bordered on androgyny. What could he say? He just liked how much lighter some women’s clothing styles were.
The bold boy would have volunteered himself for a fashion makeover one day, but he was happy with his bizarre inability to dress like the other boy’s his age. Then it was the naming of one place that tore the other thoughts out of his head completely. “Disneyland,” he repeated in thought before putting some more noodles into his mouth. He hadn’t been there yet himself, but that wasn’t because he didn’t want to go. He just always got sidetracked with all of the other things he was systematically shuffling through. Heck, he was still going through the Walk of Fame. But now the fact that someone like Elaine hadn’t gone either changed everything.
He checked his watch. Yes, he considered the time constraints of pretending to be sick. No, he didn’t really care in that moment about possibly getting in trouble. That was a possibility that he had been willing to accept from the beginning.
“We could go. Now. Right now. Can we? On second thought, don’t think about it too much. Finish eating and I’ll check the bus schedules!” And he did exactly that. Popping more of the takoyaki into his mouth he pulled out his phone to find the right schedule. |

the city is at war bless the young and rich with designer drugs and designer friends Fashion... speaking of which, Nacho was rather worse for the wear. No, she'd correct herself on that, he was absolutely atrocious. Worse than anything she'd ever seen, and Elaine herself had seen quite a few fashion disasters in her day. And it dawned on her. That was why she never associated with him. Because he looked like a walking piece of... ick. Just looking at him now gave her a headache. If they were going to be friends, she was going to need to fix the poor obliviousness that was this boy's clothes.
In fact, Elaine couldn't even describe what he was wearing now, it was just... odd. But tearing her mind off the subject of this atrocity in front of her, and onto the one thing she mentioned that seemed to hook him. Disneyland. At first Elaine thought Nacho would say something simple and predictable, like how he wanted to go to Disneyland too, and how they should go together one day.
Elaine really didn't expect him to suggest today of all days, right now. She actually stared at him for a good couple of seconds, wondering if he was serious or not. She'd even stopped chewing on her food, in shock as she was. "Today? Now? Disneyland?" Elaine couldn't even form proper sentences. Was Nacho crazy or something?
But he seemed dead serious, and Elaine was willing to go along with whatever he wanted. Knock off something she wanted to do from the list. "I guess, why not?" She continued eating, as he suggested to her, why not let him do all the work? Elaine had wanted to shop around Little Tokyo for Sound Fuse stuff, but Disneyland seemed like a much better place.
