tagged: duvet. time: May 6th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: hello father of my unborn child. "A- ah, okay!" Hayden said as she told him to clean anything that could have been dirty. Green eyes scanned the kitchen, taking note of the dishes and the surfaces that looked like they might have been in a bit of a need of a scrub, though they weren't exactly filthy. "Anything including things that aren't dishes as well?" It wasn't that he was trying to get out of doing what he had been assigned to do, but just that he wanted to be clear with the woman-- he didn't want to touch anything that he hadn't been asked to touch, or told to touch. His sister always freaked out when he so much as brushed against their finest china, and he certainly didn't want to risk that with Edith.
"I'd love to meet anyone you know," he began. It always helped to know people, right? Hayden's face lit up at the thought. Hooray, more friends! As for work. "Yes, I do have a job... Kind of. I'm going to begin in a couple of days," Hayden responded to her statement. Though at the back of his mind, part of him couldn't help but wonder whether he should have waited, and then applied for a job at the candy store. If this was what it entailed... Hayden really didn't mind doing all of this. Luckily she wasn't one of those tyrannical ladies who would make him work in Herschel's for the rest of his life in order to repay a debt. The very thought made him shudder with horror, and he resumed scrubbing the pan with all that he had. Suddenly, the prospect of cleaning the whole kitchen and the rest of the store didn't sound that bad compared to the horrors he had heard people face in movies. Like that show Gabi made him watch, where the girl had broken a vase worth one million yen and was then forced to crossdress as a male to pay it off... He was immediately jolted out of his thoughts by Edith's advice.
"Thank you," Hayden muttered, darting under the cabinet to grab hold of the steel wool. Some poking and prodding later, he had managed to locate the tool, and resumed cleaning the way she had told him to. Finally, the first of the pans was done, and he showed it to the lady, pushing it in her direction as he asked wistfully:
"Did I do okay?"

Oh, now she was just being mean. Still… " Anything," she reaffirmed, giving him the go ahead to clean beyond just the dishes if he saw fit to do so. She kept a clean space so that wouldn't be too much added work, but she wasn't going to tell him no if he got the idea in his mind to clean something else back there. This was just way too easy. A smile stayed on her face as she listened to his positive response. He had the right sort of mindset for someone getting used to a new place. She'd be sure to ask around a bit more in the future for friends that may have had children or grandchildren at CalTech. However, his job description was a bit more vague than she would have hoped. Stepping further into the back with him, she inspected the pan that he had just finished. It looked basically clean, but there was a minuscule bit on the back that she ran her finger across. " You're doing wonderfully." He was doing wonderfully for someone who claimed to not be very good with dishes. And for someone who seemed confused by the process at first. She pointed the spot out to him. " You just have to be careful of the back. Sometimes something will get stuck there from another pan in the sink." With that, Edith handed it back to him so that he could finish it off. " What sort of place are you going to work for? I imagine someone your age is doing something fancy with computers. You know, it's been hard to find good help around here when most of this generation seems to be busy with technology, graphic design, or something." The older woman admitted the assumption with a sigh, shaking her head. " Not that it's a bad thing, of course. I guess it's good to see the world still developing." |

tagged: duvet. time: May 6th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: hello father of my unborn child. Anything, huh... Hayden grinned with acknowledgement, glancing over towards the lightly floured surfaces and the small stains on the handlebar of a couple of stray pots. If she wanted him to clean everything, then he would do so as best as he could. He'd broken something of hers, and he'd do anything to show that he wasn't going to create any more trouble. She seemed like such a nice lady; he really hadn't meant to be any trouble, so the thought that he could make up for it did cheer him up a lot. Upon Edith's handing the pot back to him, Hayden picked it up, eyes widening with the large spot on the back.
"Sorry I didn't notice that. Thanks for pointing it out to me," he laughed sheepishly, "I would have totally missed that if I hadn't checked with you." With that, he got back to scrubbing madly, a glowing feeling radiating in his chest as he watched the spot grow smaller and smaller until it disappeared. Who would have thought that washing dishes could be so rewarding? Then again, it was probably because he had rarely done this before; once it became a necessity for him the novelty was supposed to wear off, and it would be a chore instead. Just the downside to being a rich kid, he frowned. So many people would have killed to be born into a family like his, and yet he found himself resenting the label he had to carry around... Was it bad that he felt more at home already in Los Angeles, when nobody knew who he was or who he was connected to? Where he could be at the back of a store scrubbing pots without someone to question what he was doing or why he didn't just pay her back in cash? Where perhaps he would meet people who didn't want to use and hurt him?
Edith really did seem very kind, even if she was making him do a lot of work. Hayden set the first pan down, and then begun on the second.
"I'm actually going to be working for a cafe," Hayden said with a sheepish smile. "It's probably a good thing I'm training to wash dishes, even though I'm supposed to just be a waiter." How he wished he'd waited though, waited to discover this hidden gem so he could possibly get a job here-- not that Edith would take him on, no, not after the disaster he'd made by knocking the jar down! "I did some computer science back in high school, though. It was a lot of fun and I really liked it, but I think that I might be doing a chemistry or physics major once I get to college. Science is all really cool. I bet there's a lot of it in candy-making, too!" With that, he set the second pot down, and glanced at the surfaces of the counters.
"T- this is going to sound silly, but I use a different spray for the counters than from the pots. Right?"

[atrb=cellpadding, 0, true][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style,width: 450px; background-color: #121212;]words: 561 tag(s): Hayden <3! date: May 6th The good advice, I always hated, but looking back it made me greater Oh, how good it felt to know your kitchen was getting so well cleaned for free. Well, almost free to her. He had broken a jar full of candies. In all honesty, she didn't see it as that big of a loss in comparison to what he was willing to do to make up for it. Edith had to fight back a fit of laughter when he started telling her what sort of job he was about to start. To help with this, she had intended to go back out to the counter to finish what she was doing, but she stayed with him a moment more to fish out any of the other cleaning products that he may have wanted to make use of. He was doing just fine with the dishes and while cleaning the surfaces with the same soap wouldn't hurt anything… it was wrong. And it would have taken him that much longer. She was taking advantage of the situation, but she wasn't that cruel. Walking over to one of the other cabinets, she pulled out some of the basic surface cleaners he could use. " You should use these for everything else. They'll work better on the surfaces." She made sure to grab a few clean cloths and sponges for him as well. Couldn't expect him to use his bare hands, after all. She thought about offering him gloves, too, but he wasn't likely to be scrubbing too much with anything abrasive. He'd be fine. " So, a cafe, hm? Hopefully they'll pay you enough." She couldn't really see that for him with his actions so far, but who was she to judge. Growing up she had been raised the sort of girl who was very capable of doing many basic things, including wash dishes. That was just how things worked in her family. However, it seemed in the area she and her husband lived in now that wasn't always the case. Times, too, were just different. Though she was certain that anyone could pick up on basic chores after a try or two, the idea of this boy working at a cafe was almost a bit ironic to her. He wasn't bad at what he was doing for her now, but the cafes of Los Angeles could be fast paced. Depending on where he was working and who his bosses were, he would either shape up quickly or get eaten alive. Edith always liked to think that things worked out for the best even if things didn't always work out as planned, but she couldn't help but feel the slightest concern for him. He seemed to have a really good personality, so he would probably make fantastic a waiter. Assuming that the accidental jar breaking wasn't part of a natural clumsiness. Leaning over on a moment, she looked up and gave him a nod and a smile. " I would say there's some science to all cooking, so it's definitely in candy-making, too. I think that's why my husband got so interested in it. He always liked picking up hobbies like this." She was getting an idea from all of this. With almost a sly expression, she lifted herself back up. " If science is a subject you really enjoy, then you should give candy-making a try sometime. You know, we've been looking for some extra help for awhile." |

tagged: duvet. time: May 6th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: hello father of my unborn child. "Okay, thank you," Hayden said as the woman pulled out the detergents and sprays and cloths, setting them on the counter. He smiled, the dimples in his cheeks showing as he did so. "Sorry if I'm a little dumb when it comes to this kind of thing. Some waiter I'm going to be, huh? I hope I don't get fired on the first day or something." Shaking his head, the boy got back to work, starting to spray the counters with the cleaning agents she had selected. Wetting the cloth lightly, Hayden immediately got to work, scrubbing at the counters. He was likely to miss a spot or two, he knew, but it didn't mean that he wouldn't try his best before he told her he was done. The science of candy-making definitely sounded interesting, and his eyes lit up at the sound of it.
"If you think about it everything is kind of dictated by science though," Hayden said, not pausing at his task as he spoke. "Even cleaning, or movement. It's quite amazing how science and math are all around us without us realising it." Much as the humanities and arts were fascinating, he was definitely biased towards the sciences. They were happening, all the time, everywhere, and there were new discoveries every single day. "Who does most of the candy-making, though? You or your husband? Or do you kind of split it?" Upon hearing her suggestion that he should try making candy, Hayden chuckled.
"I'd love to try making candy! I promise, I'm not normally this clumsy, but I'm not very used to cooking things either. I might burn something if I'm not careful, though I could always try..." Like he was doing now. Hayden stepped away from the counter that seemed to be in all appearances clean to him. He gave Edith a hopeful smile. "Is this okay?"

[atrb=cellpadding, 0, true][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=style,width: 450px; background-color: #121212;]words: 378 tag(s): Hayden <3! date: May 6th The good advice, I always hated, but looking back it made me greater As Hayden scrubbed away at the counters in the back room, Edith took another moment to go back to what she was originally doing. She could finish straightening up her affairs with the register, as the receipts were nearly all in order. Ah, having the extra help was certainly a joy. It would've been even better as something not so temporary. The boy's excitement made her hopeful that perhaps she could make this a more permanent arrangement. It would cost her a bit more than a broken jar of mints for a workday, but if she and her husband could have more time to themselves then it would be worth it. It wasn't as if they were in the business to make a huge profit anyway. " That's true!" Edith called back in reply to his talk about science. She may not have been some sort of extreme rocket scientist, but she had still spent plenty of years in the realm of mechanical engineering. Sure, this may have applied to just vehicles of different sorts, but she knew about how the principles stretched out into so many things around them. Not that she really gave it much thought in her daily routines. She considered herself too old to overanalyze the world. " My husband actually does most of the candy-making, so you'd have to learn from him. Louise thinks he's getting grumpy with age, but he's still a sweetheart on the inside. I think you two would get along well enough." The thought of what her husband would make of the matter brought an amused grin to her face as she walked back to where Hayden was working. In her hand she had now carried a simple sheet of paper that she had taken from the register's drawer. " Seems lovely for now, yes," she answered warmly. Then, she held out the paper to him. " I guess you're free to go eat something then, but you should fill this application out and bring it back when you finish. You can try and scrape by on tips as a waiter, or you could get tips and an actual wage working here. Just a thought." Edith gave him a casual shrug, but she was being very non-subtly persuasive. A woman could try, right? |

tagged: duvet. time: May 6th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: hello father of my unborn child. "Learn from him, huh..." It was a pity that Hayden would probably never get the chance to, or so he thought. But from how she talked about it, cooking and making candy didn't seem all that difficult. Just a dash of sugar here, a dash of it there-- okay, and years and years of technique, but if he put in the effort maybe he'd be okay at it? He would probably never be able to sell candy, but it certainly did sound fun. Perhaps one day if she offered a class here or something Hayden could sign up. The boy smiled at the thought. Despite everything, Edith did seem really kind. He could only wish that everyone else in Los Angeles would be the same.
Maybe it wouldn't hurt this once to place his trust in her; he had been in the back of her store and was still alive, after all.
"Ah, am I done?" Hayden asked after Edith had given him her approval. "Again, I'm sorry, so so sorry for what happened. I hope that this made up for it all." Before he could say anything else, however, she had thrust a piece of paper out to him, and his eyes widened. Was this... Wait, it looked like some sort of job application form, he'd filled one in earlier when he'd applied to work at the cafe-- oh.
Oh.
"A- are you hiring me?" the swimmer exclaimed, eyes going as wide as saucers. Come to think of it, that really did sound like an amazing idea. He'd be surrounded by candy and maybe even get to learn to make candy, and hopefully he wouldn't drop anything ever again, and... Okay, maybe his fortunes were turning around. Hayden quickly grabbed the application form from her. "Can I-- can I borrow a pen please?" The grin on his lips was unmistakably wide. "I promise I'll return it to you after I go and get lunch!"

She finally had a promising potential employee who was more than happy to apply. " I'm maaaybe hiring you unless there's some sort of thievery charges against you that I don't know about," Edith replied, though she was mostly joking by that statement. Keyword was mostly. He seemed like a perfectly sweet boy and he only seemed more and more endearing as their small bit of time together passed. She highly doubted he was any sort of troublemaker outside of his clumsiness. Of course, that was just an outward opinion. For all she knew he could've been a compulsive arson or a kleptomaniac. Any other charges on a police record that he may have had against him hardly mattered to her. She had been a reckless youth herself back in the day and she wasn't one to judge about smaller matters. When it was requested, Edith was more than happy to fetch a pen for him. She motioned with a wave for him to follow her back to the store's main room so that she could grab a pen from the desk. Thankfully, she always kept a few extra in the drawers for when Harold lost his pens in the deep dark depths of her purses. " Here you go, sugar lump." She held out the pen to him. " Take your time, don't worry about rushing through it. If for whatever reason I'm not around by the time you get back, you can hand it over to Harold, okay? He'll be happy to get it, too." |

tagged: duvet. time: May 6th 2012, 17:00. speech: hayden. notes: hello father of my unborn child. "Thank you so much."
Hayden wasn't difficult to read, not at all. It would have been clear as day to most people that he was overjoyed for this opportunity, for this chance to tackle something that not many would have the chance to get. He'd felt cooped up for so long that any taste of a better world outside was bliss to him-- there was so much to be said and done outside of his four walls, and it was only in recent years that he'd had the chance to savour it. There had been a reason he'd related to Rapunzel when he'd watched Tangled, oddly enough, even though most boys his age would have deemed the movie silly or for girls. He knew how she felt, and couldn't help but see his sister in Mother Gothel at times, awful as it sounded.
Sometimes, he wished that you could pick and choose your family.
Yet you couldn't, you wouldn't, and he would never be able to. But as he took the pen from Edith and his grin widened, he couldn't help but wonder whether this was some form of step ahead. He was choosing who to surround himself with, taking his life into his own hands, learning, growing, meeting people that he would never have! "I'll definitely be back, I promise," Hayden said. "Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity, and I'll do my best to be the best employee that you've ever had!" And with that, he was gone-- out into the beautiful California sunshine, yet again willing and ready to embrace the day, glad that he'd managed to once again find the silver lining in the clouds.
